You don’t need to be a world-class swimmer to enjoy swimming. That’s why we design pools that work for everyone.
Fanning Howey designs facilities that are more than just sports venues. They are classrooms, community centers and therapy labs. To accomplish this, we collaborate with all stakeholders – from swim coaches to teachers to community leaders.
Fanning Howey designers think big, while our consultant partners get into the details. We use tank and gutter design to maximize swimmer performance. Our designs also use the latest in energy efficient and low-maintenance systems. As a result, both students and facilities staff are able to achieve more.
Fanning Howey’s experience includes more than 80 pools and natatoriums, including new and renovated facilities across the country.
The new Jeffersonville High School Natatorium will provide the additional space needed for activities in and out of the pool.
The dramatically increased water surface area will accommodate many more swimmers during regular daytime hours. Support areas, such as the pool deck, locker rooms, classroom/meeting space, and spectator areas, will provide an environment ready to serve all types of swimming and diving programs.
This standalone facility will be located immediately adjacent to the high school and will include an Olympic-sized swimming pool, an integral diving well, a zero-depth entry therapy pool, deck level support spaces and spectator seating capacity of 1,000 people. The 50+ meter Olympic-sized pool has two movable bulkheads which reconfigure to support multiple competition and training courses.

Carmel High School’s new natatorium, in concert with renovations to the existing pool, will provide a complex to better serve students, the community and top-tier competition. This expansion more than doubles the available water surface for swimming programs that continue to grow in the Carmel community. The new expanded entrance is truly the second main entrance to the high school, welcoming students arriving from the trail and parking lots to the north as well as athletes and spectators for events in the natatorium, fieldhouse and other athletic facilities.
The competition pool is designed to serve the needs of Carmel’s record-breaking swim program. A fully recessed gutter, a flat pool floor with 8-foot depth exceeding FINA and USA Swimming standards for entry safety, 25-meter width and cooler water temperature ensures this will be one of the fastest pools in the nation.

“Fanning Howey just knocked it out of the park. Their design was very conservative but so beautiful. It wasn’t over the top and was sleek and organized and very purposeful for everything we needed to do.”

The expanded Pike High School natatorium provides new swimming, diving and instructional opportunities for the students of MSD of Pike Township.
The new pool facility is designed for maximum flexibility of instructional programs. The competition pool is configured so that multiple programs can be conducted simultaneously, and a smaller body of water surrounded entirely by deck space provides an optimum learn to swim and water therapy environment. The stateof-the-art gutter design of Pike Pool accepts all dynamic surges displaced by competitors, creating incredibly fast water. Upon opening, Pike swimmers quickly set five new state records.

For 30 years, Fanning Howey has helped Hamilton Southeastern Schools meet the needs of its rapidly growing population.
Hamilton Southeastern High School extended 50-meter pool
The modernization of Hamilton Southeastern High School included renovation of the existing natatorium to transform a 25-yard pool into a 50-meter pool.
The design team’s cost-effective approach required the existing pool to be extended, rather than building a new pool in its place. Designers worked with the structural engineer to create a shoring plan for removal of the north exterior wall and end wall of the pool tank. Installation of the pool extension and new wall was orchestrated carefully by architects and contractors, resulting in a cost-effective and high-performance pool for one of the state of Indiana’s best swimming programs.

– ANDY PEDERSON, FORMER AQUATICS DIRECTOR Hamilton Southeastern Schools Fishers, INThe new natatorium at Fishers High School is a 9-lane, 50-meter competition pool which is used extensively for instruction and for competitive swimming events.
The pool was designed as Phase 2 of the new Fishers High School campus, which involved adding the natatorium onto an existing 250,000-square-foot building. The pool includes two movable bulkheads and a diving well with 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Extensive adjacent dry-land and support facilities make this a favorite site for activities throughout the year.

Shortly after Belleville High School opened its new natatorium, the records began to fall. The client and students wanted a fast pool, and Fanning Howey delivered with an approach that uses gutter design, gutter capacity and enhanced lane markers to maximize speed. The natatorium’s state-of-the-art starting blocks and timing system allows the swim coach to give instant feedback regarding swimmers’ reaction times. A video display is also capable of providing instantaneous feedback on diving form. In one of the first meets in the new pool, a Belleville swim team member broke a 27-year-old school record.

A collaborative design process with the students of Milford High School resulted in a unique natatorium and family aquatics center.
Fanning Howey invited a group of students from all grade levels to work side by side in creating their natatorium and aquatics center. The effort provided a valuable learning experience for students, and resulted in a competition pool and family recreation pool for all ages. The 8-lane competition pool features a state-of-the-art filtration and air handling system with an attached diving well. Student drawings and input led to the creation of a family pool with a water slide, dump buckets and a zero-depth entry.
