Carmel Performing Arts
Carmel, IN
The addition and renovation of the performing arts wing at Carmel High School creates a contemporary suite of rehearsal and performance spaces to serve Carmel's music and theater programs for years to come.
Carmel High School's Performing Arts Department was living in outdated and poorly arranged spaces. Expanding and rearranging rehearsal spaces brings musical programs together, adding convenient storage for choir, band and orchestra. All spaces are equipped with mirrors to function as rehearsal spaces for a variety of performance groups. Practice rooms are relocated to the first floor, with windows providing natural light, a feature rarely seen in older style rehearsal spaces.

Bundy Auditorium
New Castle, IN
Renovations to Bundy Auditorium achieved big results on a small budget.
The design team focused on improving the performance experience for New Castle students by upgrading sound, lighting and technology systems.
With the leftover dollars in the budget, the design team gave the auditorium a much-needed facelift with new seating, carpet and paint. The design also improves functionality within the auditorium. The design team repurposed the large existing wood partition walls for use as the exterior face of the sound booth. This allowed the team to economically increase the size of the sound booth, an improvement which allows New Castle's theatre department to hold its theatre tech class.

Wilson High School
Washington, DC
Wilson High School was originally built in 1935 and, thanks to an academy approach to instruction, it has since developed into one of Washington, DC’s best high schools.
At Wilson, the basement is opened as a new ground floor entrance housing the media center and administrative office. Each of the next three floors include classrooms, offices, resource and planning rooms, and science classrooms and labs. The gym and the auditorium have switched places, with the old gym and media center becoming the new Visual and Performing Arts Center that also serves as a civic theatre. Sustainable design and preservation of the existing building is an important aspect at Wilson, which has achieved LEED Gold certification.

Olentangy Berlin Middle School
Delaware, OH
A modified prototype design is providing studentcentered learning environments for Olentangy's middle school curriculum.
Fanning Howey collaborated with Olentangy educators to rethink the district's existing middle school prototype. The design creates a new innovation hub along the central corridor, comprised of a student collaboration area, a modern media center and a maker space.
Fanning Howey designers elongated academic wings to accommodate additional classrooms and inserted collaboration space in the extended learning areas. The design also improves upon the previous prototype by expanding and reorganizing special education classrooms, adding more spectator seating in the gymnasium, increasing locker room size and expanding the orchestra room.
