GETTING HERE

There’s a saying in Fargo that it only takes about 10-15 minutes to get anywhere. While that is basically true, we do recommend utilizing a car or the city bus to get from place to place. We have Uber and Lyft available as well as several traditional Taxi Companies (pg. 48). You can also rent a car right at Hector International Airport or at many of the Car Rental Companies (pg. 48) throughout the area. Fargo also has a bus service called MATBUS

Is ND your 50th state? Join the Best for Last Club!

Travel Ambassadors at the Fargo-Moorhead Visitors Center noticed a trend in travelers looking to visit all 50 States and North Dakota was often last to be checked off their list. So, in 2013, the Best for Last Club was born to celebrate with these visitors.

Shoot, people have started to purposely “save” their visit to North Dakota for last or changed their travel plans in order to visit the Fargo-Moorhead Visitors Center and be welcomed into the Best for Last Club.

Open year-round, the Red River Zoo specializes in the care of some of the rarest cold climate species on earth. All the animals come from similar climate conditions to the Red River Valley… so those camels you see actually love the cold!

Stop by the colored pencil fence –made up of over 1,000 large colored pencils – and ride the antique 1928 carousel during your visit.

Fargo Theatre

314 Broadway N, Fargo

Built in 1926 and beautifully restored, the art deco interior serves as an art house theatre. Beyond movies, it's also one of Fargo’s top venues for concerts, performing arts, and other live events. Two hidden gems sit inside: Wood Chip Marge, a wooden statue carved in the likeness of Marge Gunderson from the 1996 film, Fargo, and The Mighty Wurlitzer, a 1926 pipe organ which scored silent movies and is still played today.

Although what you see on TV wasn’t actually filmed in Fargo, North Dakota, you can still visit a piece of cinematic history – the original Fargo Woodchipper movie prop (and its stunt double) –at the Fargo-Moorhead Visitors Center.

Just off I-94, the Fargo Woodchipper sits ready and waiting for a photo op. The friendly Travel Ambassadors will take your picture as you pretend to push a fake leg into the Fargo “chipper”.

Bonanzaville, USA

1351 Main Ave W, West Fargo

Named after the large Bonanza farms that dominated the prairie of the Old West, this pioneer village has 40+ buildings that have been relocated here from across the region.

Wander through Fargo’s first house, a country schoolhouse, a saloon and hotel, a prairie church, and a fully-stocked mercantile store. You might even get to talk to a docent in period dress about what life was like on the prairie.

Downtown Fargo

Fargo’s main cultural district fills the most historic section of the city. If you’re looking for uniquely local, Downtown is the place to go with tons of shops, local restaurants, and bars lining the streets.

Start your day with craft coffee (pg. 42), then explore local art, get your picture with the Fargo Theatre marquee, buy souvenirs, and shop at local boutiques (pg. 44).

Cap the night off with bustling nightlife, live entertainment, and perfectly crafted drinks.

Plains Art Museum

704 1st Ave N, Fargo

The largest accredited art museum in North Dakota, Plains Art Museum is located in a renovated International Harvester warehouse.

This free art museum’s permanent collection has over 4,000 national, international, and regional works, including Native American art.

Reserve a guided tour for just $4 per person and have a Plains Art educator show you around or wander at your own pace.

Comstock House

506 8th St S, Moorhead

Built in 1882 by an influential lawyer and businessman, Solomon Comstock, this Victorian home was the most expensive house on the block.

Reserve a guided tour and learn about its incredible residents and life in the early days on the prairie.

There are also multiple events throughout the year like the flashlight tours, Holiday Traditions tours, and more.

Rourke Art Gallery + Museum

521 Main Ave, Moorhead

Located in Downtown Moorhead, the Rourke is housed in a beautiful neoclassical building that is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

Curated by a local art aficionado, James Tiernan O’Rourke, the massive permanent collection and rotating exhibits aim to show the art of our time and place.

Shaped like a big white tent adjacent to the Red River, the Hjemkomst Center has something special inside: a full-size replica Viking ship. Immerse yourself in the Hjemkomst ship’s story through videos and by wandering around its massive hull. Then, check out the art and local history exhibits in the basement and the Stave Church outside.

Fargo Air Museum

1609 19th Ave N, Fargo

Wander through two hangars full of aircraft ranging from a Wright Brothers’ flyer to the Global Hawk unmanned surveillance aircraft. 90% of the planes you’ll see inside are still able to fly so you might even see one take to the skies while you’re in town. Wanting to explore on a tour? Step into the past with a veteran docent and hear about which planes they may have flown when they were in the service, or walk it on your own and have the Talking Trails app show you the way.

The Original Moorhead Dairy Queen

24 8th St S, Moorhead

As one of the oldest original stores, the Dairy Queen doesn’t have to follow all modern franchise rules, meaning you won’t find another DQ like this.

Walk up to the counter (open Mar. 1 - Oct.31) for original DQ treats like Monkey Tails, Mr. Malties, or Chipper Sandwiches. The famous Dilly Bar was invented at this very location, so try one of these handdipped creations while you take a photo with the 16-foot-tall Dilly Bar statue!

Roger Maris Museum

3902 13th Ave S, Fargo

Tucked inside West Acres Mall, this Museum pays homage to the great baseball player of the 60s. Watch historic footage in a theater with actual Yankee seats and see many artifacts from Roger’s youth and care. Per his wishes, the museum is accessible and free to all, so stop by and take a peek at the memorabilia whenever the mall is open.

STORIES of LOCAL BLACK HISTORY

Located in Downtown Moorhead, the Hjemkomst Center houses the Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County. The organization’s mission is to collect, preserve, interpret, and share the history and culture of Clay County, Minnesota. The recent exhibition Stories of Local Black History brought more information about the Black experience in the Fargo metro area. We spoke to Markus Krueger to fill us in on what they found in their research.

African American men and women were among the founders of Fargo-Moorhead in the 1870s. The story of immigrant families coming to the Red River Valley to claim farmland is well known here, and there were some African American farmers in our area. Still, it was a different profession that drew the first Black families to our town: African American men saw new cities needing a barber.

Black Barbers serve an essential role in American society today, and that role evolved from how African American men were considered the best barbers in the 1800s. Being a barber was one of the few jobs available at this time that allowed a Black man to be his own boss, make good money, own his own business, and be respected as a professional. White men considered it the height of luxury to get a shave and a haircut in a First-Class Barbershop run by an African American barber. Perhaps half of FargoMoorhead’s barbers in the mid-1880s were African American, and the first African American families to move to Fargo-Moorhead were barber families.

One unique aspect of Fargo-Moorhead’s Black community is the high percentage of New Americans. Fargo-Moorhead has been a refugee resettlement community ever since the end of World War II. Fargo-Moorhead’s colleges and booming tech industry have been a great driver of diversity in our region and also attract smart professionals from around the world, including African countries and countries of the African Diaspora.

Felix Battles Project

Felix is the first known African American permanent resident of Fargo-Moorhead, called by one local newspaper “the pioneer barber of the Red River Valley.” He was born enslaved, escaped slavery as a teenager, joined the US army to help defeat the Confederacy, and when Moorhead was about a year old, he made this place his home.

The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County will be making a statue for him to raise awareness of this fascinating person, to educate people about the crucial yet intentionally overlooked role African Americans played in winning the Civil War, and to tell people about Fargo-Moorhead’s original African American community.

If you're looking for something sweet, you're in luck with our Scandinavian dessert, Lefse. Typically served with butter and a sprinkle of sugar, Sons of Norway, Marge’s Diner, and Prairie Kitchen make it as traditional as it comes. You can also purchase a pack from the grocery store.

We have great burgers. Pounds, JL Beers, Sickie's Garage, and Mick's Office are some of the local favorites. It's at these places you can get Juicy Lucy's, local inspired toppings, and out-of-this-world burgers you'll never forget.

THE R E D R I VER of the NORTH

The Red River is the centerpiece of life in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Although it can sometimes be a nuisance during the flooding times of the spring, it can also be a beautiful place to experience nature right within city limits.

Canoeing/Kayaking

For those looking to get on the river, canoeing and kayaking options are prevalent. If you like to travel with your vessel, there are multiple ramps at various parks in the area where you can launch your boat.

If you are looking to rent a canoe or kayak, Lindenwood Park and Viking Ship Park have options for rentals. You can launch the boats near the rental area and get on the water for hours on end.

Hiking/Biking

There are multiple parks along the Red River, but Lindenwood Park and Gooseberry Park are topnotch places to start. Park on either side and walk numerous miles along the river and across the beautiful Lindenwood bridge.

For biking enthusiasts, there are great rides along the river at any time of year. Gooseberry Park has a 3.6-mile loop along the river that is great for beginners or experienced riders. At MB Johnson Park, the trails also wind through the woods along the river and have a few more obstacles for year-round biking at any level.

Fishing

Fishing is a fantastic pastime for those looking to relax along the riverbanks. Cast a line at the public shoreline areas and attempt to catch a variety of fish like Walleye, Pike, Bass, and even Catfish.

There are also guides available on the Red River if you want to get serious about your fishing expedition. Brad Durick is a local guide who knows a lot about the area and where to do some world-class catfishing.

Birding

The Red River is home to some beautiful must-visit destinations for local birders. Orchard Glen is a wonderful place to start; just south of the city limits, this park has an old apple orchard with a road looping around it. Trefoil Park to the north is a top place to spot rare birds. Hop on the paved trail and see the waterfall, tons of trees, and clear views of the skies.

rostival is all about cold being cool. Throughout the six weeks of winter fun, you can expect classic outdoor activities like cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and North of Normal fun like cardboard sled races, snow sculpture competitions, and so much more. Grab your mittens and join us outdoors.

Fun at Frozen Fortress

Embrace the cold of winter with this outdoor party. Local artists show creativity with massive snow sculptures matching the theme. Free CrossCountry ski and snowshoe rentals, Snowga (snow yoga), hot chocolate, toasted marshmallows, and more at Viking Ship Park in Moorhead, MN.

Movie on Ice

Watch a family-friendly movie on the big screen while you and your family are skating and enjoying hot cocoa and cookies on the Lights Ice Rink in West Fargo. This is a free event with skate rentals available.

Candlelight Trail Walk

Arrive at night and ski, hike or snowshoe through the trails while checking out the stars and heading through Mary’s Light Tunnel. 50,000 string lights once used in Downtown Fargo are now a 60-foot canopy of bright lights showing winter’s beauty as you make your way through.

Cardboard Sled Race

Join in on the races! Bring your decorated cardboard sled from home and race-down Mickelson sledding hill. Kids and adults alike are welcome to participate in the race.

Frostival began with a two-day event in January with events throughout the Fargo-Moorhead metro area. After receiving feedback from the attendees that it was tough to get to all the events in one weekend, the festival expanded to a 6-week-long celebration. Scan the code for a full list of events.

Fargo is a great place to bring the family for a weekend trip. Here’s a day-and-a-half itinerary to follow next time your family comes to town.

MORNING

Sandy's Donuts –

Nothing starts your day off on a good foot like a good donut, and Sandy’s has great options like dirt and worms and maple bacon long johns.

Red River Zoo –Meander through exhibits of cold-weather animals like wolves, camels, and takin. Don't forget to take a ride on the carousel on your way out.

Clay Your Way –Next up, stop into Clay Your Way to make pottery pieces that the staff will then clear glaze, and fire so you can take them home. Plus, they will ship to you if you don’t have time to wait.

AFTERNOON

Spicy Pie – Order pizza by the slice or a pie for the whole family. Plus, they have Dippin’ Dots for an after-meal treat.

Murals – The last afternoon activity of the day, the murals! There are many to see and take photos of in Downtown Fargo. Pick up a mural map at the FargoMoorhead Visitors Center to find them all.

EVENING

Kingpinz Social – After your big mural hunt, head to Kingpinz Social for bowling, laser tag, escape rooms, and more. Plus, there is a full-service restaurant and bar along with an Airstream Snack Trailer for a quick bite.

MORNING AFTERNOON

Before you head home, run off some energy at the Splash Pad. The Shadow Wood Splash Pad is zero-depth and has fun spickets that spray water.

Thunder Road – For the older kids, Thunder Road would be a little more their speed. Challenge each other to a game of laser tag or mini golf. Get in some driving practice with go-karts and bumper cars or keep it classic in the arcade.

If the weather isn't cooperating opt for Courts Plus. They have a huge playground of slides, climbing structures, and never-ending obstacles.

Biking, rollerblading, and walking on the parks’ designated trails are some of the locals’ favorite free things to do. In winter, dozens of outdoor skating rinks and trails are open to the public.

2. Discover Fargo’s street art Downtown Fargo has tons of photo ops, from sculpted bike racks and wrapped electrical boxes to creative murals by local artists.

4. Capture a memory by the Fargo Theatre

This 1926 theater in Downtown Fargo is one of the city’s most iconic sites and photo backdrops. Or, purchase a ticket for a movie and popcorn during showtimes in this historic theatre.

5. See a Norwegian

Stave

Church A replica of the Stave church outside of Vik, Norway, you can find a piece of Scandinavia in Moorhead outside the Hjemkomst Center. Inside, purchase a ticket to see the Viking Ship and tour the church.

6. View the world’s

largest Dilly Bar

At the seasonal walk-up Moorhead Dairy Queen, you can take your picture with a 16-foot-tall Dilly Bar!

Fargo is many things, but it isn’t expensive. With most attractions and sporting events costing less than $10, it’s not hard to find a cheap day out in the city. That being said, we prefer a free day out. So, we’ve compiled 12 FUN THINGS TO DO FOR FREE in Fargo.

10. Geocaching Download the Geocaching app and go hunting. Fargo has some pretty cool caches around… Find them all!

7. Window shop in Downtown Fargo Downtown is packed with boutiques and stores selling locally made goods. Unglued and Zandbroz Variety both sell Fargo and Midwest-related products and extraordinary oddities.

I am a visual artist, and my emphasis is oil painting. I offer commission services and I paint custom oil paintings as well as a vast range of original oil paintings and prints. The Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo communities are fortunate to have an active, engaging and inclusive arts culture. From the FM Opera to the FM Symphony Orchestra, from Theatre B to the Fargo Theatre, from the Plains Art Museum to the Spirit Room, and the other arts nonprofits and hundreds of individual artists who call our region home, the arts are alive and very well in our community.

Not a lot of people know this, but the arts sector in the Metro is a huge economic driver, too. According to the 2017 US Arts & Economic Prosperity 5 report, conducted with Americans for the Arts, the nonprofit arts and culture industry in the Metro generated $41.6 million in annual economic activity, 1,533 full-time equivalent jobs, and $3.6 million in local and state government revenues.

Aptitude

Aptitude is a collection of creative arts studios brought to you by The Arts Partnership and West Acres Mall. The studios feature space for artists to create while connecting to the community.

ArtWORKS

The Arts Partnership supports many programs, but at the heart of what we do is our granting and funding work, which financially supports local artists and arts organizations. These funds make the arts more accessible, sustain a vibrant arts sector and recognize excellence in the arts.

ArtWORKS provides dynamic, rotating exhibits of local and regional artworks in business, nonprofit and university locations. As of June 30, 2022, there were 21 participating venues, most of which have 4 exhibits per year. That translates into more than 80 exhibits annually. In the past 4 years, nearly 70 artists have participated in exhibits throughout the Metro. The program also includes 12 brief music concerts by local musicians at Hector International Airport.

Community

At The Arts Partnership, we’ve diligently worked internally to be more equitable and just in all our messaging, programs, and coverage, including the creation of a working committee that meets regularly to discuss inclusion in our community.

One way we engage our Partner organizations and grantees in this work is through our annual meetings with arts leaders and their board chairs. We also ask grant applicants to discuss how they are working to make their organizations more diverse and inclusive in front of and behind the scenes.

Supported Art (CSA) Our Community Supported Arts program, in its 11th season, connects local visual artists, artisans, writers/poets, and performing artists and organizations to enthusiastic arts supporters. From 2012 through the 2022 season, TAP has supported more than 60 artists and performers, 13 artistic ensembles, and more than a dozen of our most innovative local chefs. More than 210 unique shareholders and their guests have enjoyed this outstanding series.

COMEDY & OPEN MIC

Your first stop for comedy should be The Cellar, Fargo’s only dedicated comedy club, in the basement of Front Street Taproom (which hosts open mic music, poetry, and comedy every Monday).

TVs at every table and a buffet served on a classic car? Go to Tailgators Sports Cafe.

For wall-to-wall HD screens and a peanut bar, check out Wild Bill’s Sports Saloon Brewtus’ Brickhouse is a must for brick-fired pizzas and game day specials.

Legends and Murphy’s offer free shuttle rides to many events, all-day happy hour on Sundays, and plenty of screens. Sidestreet has plenty of room to watch the game while you play pool. At Sports Zone, the name says it all.

Fill an infamous “Das Boot” with one of Wurst Bier Hall’s 41 beers, or drink brews made only in North Dakota, Minnesota, and South Dakota at Front Street Taproom

Sidestreet pours from 50 taps, while JL Beers — voted “best beer drinking spot in North Dakota” — serves national and global pints. Don’t forget to download a Crafts and Drafts passport if you’re going to multiple beer stops.

COCKTAILS

Some of the city’s best cocktails are mixed during happy hour at Mezzaluna. Sip on martinis at the Rosewild or mules at Camp Lone Tree rooftop. A Moorhead favorite, Harold’s On Main, pours tasty and original creations in their cozy, TV-less setting, while Maxwell’s in West Fargo makes what we can only call dang good cocktails in upscale environments.

MOCKTAILS

Whether you’re choosing to cut back or aren’t 21 yet, there are some great places for a fantastic mocktail. Rustica has a blueberry lavender spritzer on its menu, and Camp Lone Tree features a rhubarb crisp and mellow mosa. Also, most bars and restaurants have started to serve Flannel Fizz, a locally made soda in multiple flavors.

Fargo’s oldest bar, Bismarck Tavern, has Grain Belt on tap (enough said). Next door, another oldie-but-goodie, Empire Tavern, makes notoriously stiff drinks. Duffy’s –Fargo’s original Irish bar – is a 50-year-old staple.

Outside Downtown, Rick’s Bar and Speck’s Bar always have live bands and locals playing pool. You’ll find the same in West Fargo at M & J Saloon, Town Hall, and the biker bar, Silver Dollar. For Moorhead’s classic dives, head to Mick’s Office and JC Chumley’s.

Our amenities and programs are available year round with seasonal changes in our o erings including a splash pad in the summer and a ice rink in the winter, we have something for everyone and amenities for every age!

We accomplish our mission of making West Fargo the best place in the midwest to raise a family by providing unique opportunities to recreate like our annual Bike Safety Rodeo, family fun nights, art events, community concerts, outdoor movie nights, family friendly festivals and much more.
