PERSONAL STATEMENT

1

In early stages of being exposed to the architecture world, i was given an opportunity to design a Tea House. The site was located at Cameron Highlands, Bharat Tea Plantation. The design focuses on the consideration of climatic response, contextual, and strong cultural influence in architectural style. The building maximizes the user’s views, lighting and ventilation.

The Nature Appreciation Centre (NAC) was a challenging project as the building is to be situated at Sepang, where the site is rich with mangrove trees and are not to be touched. The NAC is designed for a dynamical circulation bringing the users through a nature tour around the mangrove trees and maximizing experience following the concept of a ‘Tree house’.

The ‘Coffee House’ being proposed at Jalan Gereja, Kuala Lumpur,an urban district, was designed to counter all site problems promising a great embracement of the market of coffee, educating the users about coffee and art reviving the site following the concept of ‘Resurrection’. The building brings the users through a urban Zen poetical spaces with a functioning facade allowing visual communication from street level. Jalan Ampang, with a row of abandoned buildings, this project was proposed as a Music Centre. The design follows a concept of ‘Psychoacoustics’ designed with musical elements with a strong poetical language aiming to achieve natural melodical sound tunnels triggering the musical minds of the users embracing sound and architecture harmonically. The design aims to take full advantage of the site and music.

Architecture is like creating artistic sculptures for people to live in. It’s one of the perspectives of how I lo ok at architecture. If there is no art, no passion, no poetics, buildings would have no meanings and would never reach architectural advancements as how we see buildings today. After several years of studying and being exposed to architecture, i see the world a lot differently and i could say, it opened my mind to think broader and in a more creative way. My passion for architecture and art allows me to integrate poetic spaces and endeavoring the art of living spaces. I believe that time plays a big role in architecture. History and development shaped the world as what we see it today. By studying and appreciating history, designing with reflecting appreciation of history infused with poetical spaces is what i believe creates a strong sense of place. I’ve always been in love with art since childho od and often find myself visiting buildings that holds great architectural work and it makes me realize how important our memories through our 5 senses is to a space and I intend to utilize 5 sense in my designs. When lo oking at an object, there’s limitless ways to see it in a different way. It’s just a matter of allowing yourself to accept changes. Sometimes the most difficult thing to do is to let go of the restricted mindset of thinking in the box. i prepare myself to await challenges because i seek knowledge that can only be achieved through experience. My designs puts the users first. A space is only a space when there are users and functions. I strongly believe that everything starts with an idea. Ideas are carried out and developed through time to achieve near perfection and changes are often made. I put full thought in consideration for every space in believing that creating a sense of space will create psychological comfort and will give meaning to the building. My methods of designs follows the considerations of essential issues and mostly focused on improving the site. The spaces in the building being thought through with functions and poetics. Interconnecting all the spaces in the building as a narration. Considering climate and site analysis. Most importantly, sustainability. Creating design processes through sketches and developing the designs perfecting the concept and functionality of spaces brings the building to life.

THE SITE : CAMERON HIGHLANDS

The site being located at ‘Bharat Tea Plantation’ , Cameron Highlands gives a massive oppurtunity of co ol weather and outstanding views. Being located in a valley makes a perfect place to control plantations, and I tend to make use of this oppurtunities. The chosen site from within Bharat Tea Plantation is marked as red in the site plan. This site promises the best views, easy accessibility, and security in terms of being less isolated from neighbourig buildings while maintaining privacy.

6

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

The design was derived from the morrocon culture of drinking tea. Focusing on the spatial confort whilst taking full oppurtunity of the views. From a complex and rough planning, the design has been simplified and amended to achieve the best architectural value. The Tea House features a mechanical waterfall falling from the Great ro om controlling indo or tempretures with evaporative co oling system.

The living ro om and the tea area are seperated as both of these spaces are designed with different poetical reasonings. The living ro om being complemented with the sound of the artificial waterfall falling from the great ro om on the first flo or creating a connection with each other. The tea area being located deeper in maintaining a more private space. The kitchen being closer to the tea area for ease of transporation of tea or other beverages.

THE SITE : SUNGAI PELEK, SEPANG

The site being located at Sungai Pelek, Sepang has an advantage of the sungai (river) that streams along the site and also the natural preserved mangove trees which creates a big impact on the site complementing it with embracement of nature. The EIC being the neighbouring building is the actual nature appreciation centre, in which this project acts as an extension of the nature appreciation centre. The design has taken consideration of the climate, views, context and strong influence of the concept of ‘tree house’ .

With the concept of ‘TreeC LHouse’, A S S R O O M the N.A.C embed s itself with the context, taking advantage of the site. The building holds the feature of ‘Nature Routes’ which gives an oppurtunity for the users to experience nature by walking through the routes that is planned to surround the magroove trees whilts providing a learning and appreciative experience. In sustatinability, implemetation of natural lighting and ventilation is considered. Careful planning of orientation considering the CONFERENCE ROOM spaces creates a facade of the building. Activities the NAC offers are nature tour guide, star gazing and nursery. The biggest factor of the building is the journey it gives to the user throughout the built routes. It is an activity by iteself. When a user walks EXECUTIVE OFFICE through the routes, unintentionally the user experiences nature. The building and the site works as one.

LE Located in Jalan Tun H.S lee, Kuala Lumpur , it is a clear oppurtunity of a potential tourist hotspot as it is surrounded by landmarks and heritage buildings. Convieniency of public facilities are nearby promissing a great pedestrian attraction and flow. Although the site is sandwiched by an office building and a comercial building, it is possible to create an impact to the site with the programs of the building. By the site analysis, the site is proven to be quite dangerous at night and many homeless people can be found. Security is a problem and it has been taken in consideration in the design of the coffee shop.

SECTIONAL PERSPECTIVE The Brickhills Coffee Shop is a commercial building marketing locally grown coffee beans and coffee art. It is designed to overcome the problems of the site responding to the site as much as possible whilst marketing the coffee beans. Following the concept of ‘Resurrection’ , the building supposedly brings back the streets to life. Poetically speaking. Jalan Tun H.S Lee used to be a very lively street and now its becoming less inhabited and homeless people starts to populate around the street making the street dangerous at night. The street is losing it’s value and that problem has been taken in high consideration. The Brickhills Coffee Shop markets, showcase as well as educate about coffee and history of Jalan Tun H.S lee to create an awareness and appreciation. The building is designed to create a welcoming feeling, following the idea of solebility in architecture. The back alley, which was a problem as it is dangerous at night, has been taken in consideration, the building uses the backalley creating a public realm which overcomes isolation thus, creating a safer back alley. Being located at a potential tourist hotspot, its possible that the building might even become a landmark.

THE SITE: JALAN AMPANG

The site is located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur along Jalan Ampang. It’s also is situated along the Klang River and opposite of Bukit Nenas. At this moment, the site consist of a row of abandon building with only two at each end still functioning and has few parking spaces to carter for workers at nearby offices. The row of buildings could be classified as a business district and has been abandon for more than 10 years. The site area is around 7000 sqm located along a one way road of Jalan Ampang. The view at the riverside is overlo oking the two capsquare residence tower whereas the view by the road is overlo oking the green forest of Bukit Nenas and with the Kuala Lumpur Tower being clearly visible. The site is surrounded with distinct landmarks such as, the Capsquare residence, Convent Bukit Nenas, AIA Tower, KL Tower and Jakel Mall. With diverse type of building surrounding the site, the community of the area includes workers, both local and international, locals, tourist and students.

30

The site also has close proximity to public transportation. There is two LRT stations located at a walking distance and a bus stop located opposite the site. The Klang River is part of the River of Life (ROL) project where the objective is to establish a new identity for the river, to increase the economic value, rehabilitate the river’s ecology and promote transit nodes along the river.

This would give an advantage to the site to be a potential node. The site has several issue that can be address. Firstly, the site has been abandon for a long time and this has create an image to passerby as a dangerous place as it could be infested with pest, homeless people or even drug users.
