AGRI-TRADE: THE RIGHT SHOW, THE RIGHT TIME, THE RIGHT LOCATION
Agri-Trade celebrates 40 years
By Nerissa McNaughton
The annual Agri-Trade Equipment Expo is largely considered to be the best show of its kind in North America. Averaging more than 30,000 buyers and 550 vendors, the Expo’s impact extends far into the community, with approximately $300 million each year in equipment sales and regional tourism. This year, Agri-Trade celebrates its 40th anniversary.
The story of Agri-Trade started in 1983 when Murray Moloy and Patrick Kennedy walked into the Red Deer Chamber of Commerce holding a sheaf of paper. Those papers were exhibitor surveys from a recent Farm Progress Show in Regina, SK. The pitch? An indoor farm show at Westerner Park. It was already in the works, but Moloy and Kennedy were seeking further engagement from the Chamber. The pitch went very well. With the support of both the Chamber and the Western Exhibition Association, committees were formed for the inaugural Expo and dates were set.
The 1984 Expo saw 7,000 square metres of space with rental rates at $32.25 per square metre inside the venue and $3.22 per square metre for space in the parking lot. The progressive theme was “new ideas and innovations.” Everything had been planned to the finest detail and anticipation ran high.
And then it snowed.
On opening day, a blizzard roared in, causing 30-inch drifts in the parking lot and forcing the closure of several main highways. However, in a stunning display of resilience that would set the pace for the next 40 years, vendors and guests still showed up.
Hugh Kellough, owner of Kellough Enterprises, has participated in the Expo since day one.
“I would say the biggest difference in the Expo from the early days to now has been the growth. In 1984, Pat Kennedy invited me to join a small group of local exhibitors, along with a few from Saskatchewan, to help get the show started. The weather didn’t cooperate that year and the turnout was modest, but we kept building it up year after year. Today, we’ve grown to over 30,000 attendees and 500 exhibitors.”
Kellough adds that, “The first Agri-Trade Shows were much smaller and attended by mostly short line manufacturers. Also, the equipment was a lot smaller. The equipment today is so much larger and takes up a lot of space. The farms have grown as well.”
He enjoys the Expo and what it means for agriculture.
“I have a lot of pride around Agri-Trade and what we have built together over the 40 years through strong board members and collaboration with exhibitors and farmers. I have met some of my closest friends and business connections from the show, and I love getting to see them every year, as well as getting to meet a few new people as well. The show being in November is the right time of the year to bring the farming community together to celebrate harvest, hear how it went and spend a few days in our beautiful city of Red Deer. I love seeing the hotels and restaurants and parking lots full, all contributing to our city’s economic development. People love to come!”
Trevor Johanson, a farmer and heavy-duty mechanic, shares the impact of Agri-Trade over the years from his hands-on experience.
“I remember being very young and having the view of all of the equipment in the outdoor parking lot as we came through the west gates,” Johanson says. “My fondest memories of the equipment were back in the days when CAT would put up a big 40 x 60ish tent outside and heat it. There would be a combine and a couple of tractors inside, but they always had hot chocolate! The other vivid memory I have of the equipment was John Deere in the harvest centre. I remember being about 10 or 12 and seeing the combine they had on display and thinking, ‘I hope I get to run that on our farm one day.’ Flash forward to today and that is the combine we are running on our farm.”
A common theme seen with the Expo is the long-range impact it has on guests, and Johanson is no exception. As an adult he joined the advisory committee and later the operations staff.
He cites being thrilled to be a part of a show that delivers an exceptional experience to all stakeholders, including partners, the city and county of Red Deer, Western Canada and the broader ag industry.
For partners, the goal is to attract exhibitors and attendees to Westerner Park, ensuring satisfaction and repeat participation, while also promoting local businesses through the Chamber. The event benefits Red Deer by boosting local businesses like restaurants and stores and growing community connections. On a larger scale, Agri-Trade highlights Canadian agricultural excellence, showcasing top manufacturers and driving economic activity across Western Canada. It also serves as a networking hub for the ag industry, bringing together farmers and industry professionals from all over the world to celebrate Canadian agriculture and form network connections.
“It is also a social event,” Johanson adds. “Many locals get to see neighbours or fellow farmers at the show that they only see a couple times a year. I often see how tight knit the ag
“The other vivid memory I have of the equipment was John Deere in the harvest centre. I remember being about 10 or 12 and seeing the combine they had on display and thinking, ‘I hope I get to run that on our farm one day.’ Flash forward to today and that is the combine we are running on our farm.”

- Krissy Fiddler
industry is when walking through the show. It is not hard to find a couple of people sitting down having a beer that all used to work together back in the day but are now all working for competitor companies. For that 15 minutes or half hour they are not competitors, but old friends catching up and probably talking about the industry that they are involved in.”
He adds, as he remembers exploring the equipment and being in awe of the mighty machines as a child, “Although I did not realize it then, Agri-Trade helped to shape my career as a mechanic and now as a farmer. As I walk around the show now, I see kids doing the exact thing that I did almost 30 years ago.”
Growing up attending and now helping with the Expo’s operations has also shown Johanson a side of the ag industry that is becoming increasingly prevalent –technology. Agri-Trade is a vital resource as technology grows across the sector.
In addition to the most modern equipment, future-leaning technology is also on display, giving farmers, ranchers and other stakeholders a look at where the industry as a whole is headed in the coming years.
This is an aspect of Agri-Trade that Krissy Fiddler, show manager, also values.
“With Agri-Trade known as one of the top buying shows in North America, we are recognised for having attendees coming in to troubleshoot,” she says. “Companies fly their specialists to the Expo so they can help our attendees make the best of the products. That is one of the reasons why Agri-Trade does not have speakers or breakout sessions. We don’t want to take away from what the exhibitors provide. Our exhibitors, functionally, are the ‘sessions.’”
Fiddler notes that while the Expo focuses on the present and future of agriculture, it also focuses on being a driving force for the next generation.
Agri-Trade’s vision is “Right Show, Right Time, Right Location.”
Fiddler explains, “The Agri-Trade Expo is the perfect blend
‘show, time and location’ because it is held right after the harvest at a time when everyone can celebrate their hard work and successes from the year. The timing has had this focus since the show’s inaugural year. We are located in the heartland of Alberta’s exceptional soil and pioneering farming techniques. Our Expo provides an ideal backdrop for showcasing outstanding crops and innovative agricultural practices, like the irrigation progress pioneered in Southern Alberta. Being ideally situated between Edmonton and Calgary offers easy access for visitors from near and far. Flying or driving, we are accessible.
“As for timing, the Expo is always looking to and investing in the future. Agri-Trade is expanding its horizons beyond North America, now hosting an exclusive German pavilion and welcoming international attendees from 27 countries as of last year.”
Forty years ago, 7,000 square metres of space was the start of it all and not even a highway-closing blizzard could keep guests away. With the combined efforts of committees, organizers, the Red Deer Chamber, Westerner Park, countless volunteers, vendors, suppliers and guests from around the world, Agri-Trade stakes its claim as the premier ag equipment expo in North America. The Expo has grown to 200,000 dedicated square feet of indoor space, with a further 100,000 outdoors. From equipment to networking, from being a social hub to a place to directly troubleshoot some of the world’s most technically advanced equipment with the manufacturers that created it, Agri-Trade holds incredible value for all.
Fiddler concludes, “As we continue to grow, our focus remains on delivering a top-quality buying experience for exhibitors and attendees alike. We envision Agri-Trade as a premier international platform for the agricultural community, driving innovation and fostering global connections.”

2024 Ag Innovations Award finalists bring next-level tech advances THE FUTURE IS NOW
Thursday, November 14th at 3:00p.m. in the Frontier room. All attendees are welcome to come and watch the competition and vote on their favourite.
Western Canadian ag may be pushing to let the rest of the world know it, but farmers here are progressive, early technology adopters, always curious about the latest in innovation. Every November, the ag community flocks to Red Deer for Agri-Trade, and the Ag Innovations Awards Competition is a huge draw.
Afterall, what’s better than seeing the latest and greatest advances, while watching top innovators compete for $20,000? Even better, attendees will participate and vote for the “Farmers’ Choice Award,” valued at $5,000. Here is a rundown of this year’s five finalists:
CropScan Grain Analyzer
The CropScan Grain Analyzer measures Nitrogen in the grain in the form of protein. Rather than relying on a grain protein measurement at the Grain Elevator, protein, moisture, oil and starch measurements can be provided every 3-8 seconds to a grower in the harvester. This data is utilized to improve harvest efficiency, grain marketing and also nutrient management. Grain Protein has been the missing layer for precision ag data management. CropScan Ag have developed the N-GAUGE app to provide the grower with the mapping and analytical tools to simply create prescription maps from the protein and yield data to continually improve yield and field performance.
CarbonWorks/640 Ag Inc. (CetaiN)
CarbonWorks CetaiN is a Nitrogen Enhancement/Stabilizer product that utilizes Pure Carbon to hold all forms of Nitrogen (Ammonium, Nitrite and Nitrate) simultaneously bringing H+ energy and Positive Molecular Oxygen to greatly stimulate the soil biologicals (Nitrosomonas and Nitrobactor) into converting more of the synthetic Nitrogen applied into the most plant available form Nitrate. This reduces fertilizer emissions and helps farmers meet the reduction goals set be the federal government. CetaiN is backed be years of third-party field trials, and has been the catalyst to CarbonWorks membership with Fertilizer Canada, where the product was referred to as a distributor in the nitrogen stabilizer market.

PathoScan (PathoBox)
PathoScan stands out in the agricultural technology sector by offering rapid, in-field crop disease testing solution. Unlike traditional lab tests that are slow and costly, our technology enables farmers to get quick and accurate disease detection directly in their fields. This innovation not only reduces the time needed for diagnosis but also significantly lowers costs, empowering farmers to take immediate action to protect their crops. By democratizing access to advanced diagnostic tools, PathoScan is revolutionizing how farmers manage crop health, ultimately leading to increased yields and reduced losses
Congratulations to our 2024 finalists!

Youth is Agricultures future and Agri-Trade is excited to be working with Agriculture for life to whom will be hosting a Career Day on Wednesday, November 13th at the show. Ag for Life is producing a full day of sessions for high school students from the region to allow them to get a better understanding of the career opportunities in Agriculture.
Bursaries
Agri-Trade is pleased to once again provide bursaries to agricultural students from Red Deer Polytechnic, Lakeland College and Olds College.
This year we will be supporting students with a $7,500 contribution to each organization. That brings our total bursary program to $22,500 for worthy students from across Alberta.
Free Admission
In our efforts to support youth in Agriculture we are also offering free admission to any 4-H member, who arrives at the show and presents their valid 4-H membership card.
As with any industry sector the future lies with our youth, and through our investment we hope to encourage their continued involvement in the agricultural sector.
Alberta 4H Alumni (Alberta 4H)
We are pleased to have 4H Alumni lead our information booths at the show. Make sure to stop in and ask any questions you may have in regards to the show. We support this worthy group by donating to their annual ski trip each year.

HIGH SPEED SEEDBED PREPARATION AND PRECISION SEED PLACEMENT IN A
SINGLE PASS
The OptiDisc coulter bar delivers precise, uniform seed placement for optimal emergence and high yields.
Onboard single or divided tank with up to 145 bu capacity.
The integrated High Speed Disc creates an even, loose, finely crumbled, level seedbed.
The 9 m (30’) Solitair DT seeds as many acres/hr at 8-10 mph as a 60 ft air drill does at 4-5 mph.
The tire packer roller ensures that the entire seedbed is reconsolidated evenly.
The Solitair DT Seedbed Prepping Seeder received an Agricultural Innovation Award for Environmental Sustainability because it:
•K ills pre-emergent weeds without herbicide
•Reduces the time available for soil erosion
•Conserves moisture by firming the soil after tillage
•Does two jobs, tillage and seeding, in a single pass
