TUTUNG PAVILION// 2019 architecture studio design 3 Tutung Pavilion is a pavilion placed on South Kalimantan, by the river as a monument remembering the Forest Fire happened in Kalimantan and Riau back in 2019. The pavilion is a place for people to sit-by and relax on the edge of the river while enjoying the view and having a good time.
Architectural Design
the monument of forest fire Tutung Pavilion acts as a critique to the government about the Forest Fire that happened in 2019. Being shown at the Kutai Expo 2024, this pavilion built nearby the Mahakam River, in the middle of the Borneo’s forest. Tutung is a word from Kutai tribes which means ‘burn’. To remarked the burning fire of the forest, tutung acts as a viewing spot for its visitors, where they can just sit by and relax by the river, or they can climb to the top of the Pavilion, to see how is the forest around them, how are the natural habitat of rainforest animals are doing. The red colour of the pavilion remarks the tongue of flames.
Located in the equator line, Kutai Kartanegara’s temperature are between 230C and 310C. The geographical location of the place gives Kutai only 2 seasons, summer and rain.

precedent study: zumthor vacation homes
I took Zumthor Vacation Homes by Peter Zumthor to study the power of finger joint and how it is able to hold such force, to build a strong boundaries between spaces. The study involves lots of exploration and how the finger joint can be modified, rotated, twisted to create a stronger structure.

The exploration includes creating prototypes, how to create a great ambience for the visitors, and how can the pavilion will able to stand, the three pcitures on the left are prototypes on how to get the lights play parts inside the pavilion.

FINAL DESIGN The design took it shapes from the abstraction shape of fire, with the tree behind the pavilion, act as a metaphor on how the fire is burning, surrounding the trees and eating them alive.
Architectural Design
The pavilion enable the visitors to enjoy the view of Kutai’s forest from different heights. The holes on the wall of pavilion gives a unique atmosphere, so the ‘dark area’ of the pavilion still receive natural lighting. The shades and natural light of the sun complete each other to create a beautiful and calming atmosphere of the pavilion.

The structure of the pavilion basically made of joints and connector module (screw). The scre will helps connect each parts of the modules to create a plane.
The connector module connected perpendicular to the small module that keeping the main module together.
The connectors must be firmly placed, because it’s the core strength of the pavilion, either on the cornering module or the straight plane ones.
The connector module connected perpendicular to the small module, creating 3 different axis that connected altogether.

INFOGRA PHICS
Infographics hold important role in architecture, as it’s the way of describing the architecture itself. Either it contains the data collected from the survey, or explaining the spatial quality of the architecture, infographics have to be clear and understandable. But how if we see infographics as an artwork, rather than just tools?
