You are your best accessory // Café 21 Personal and intimate, Café 21 is the most unique spot for a swanky Valentine’s dinner this year. Adorned with antiques and chic, old-world artwork, Café 21 offers a menu that changes daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, based on seasonality of ingredients. The dishes are rich with unique and robust flavors inspired by the Middle East. From fennel rich pierogies of potato, cabbage and peach, to curry-infused vegetable pumpkin soup, every single item on the menu is made in-house by Leyla Javadov, who opened Café 21 with her husband Alex in 2007.

You can taste the TLC of Leyla’s home cooking in each bite of the mushroom stuffed pastas, plated meticulously to show off the rich cilantro cream sauce and caramelized onions. Flatbreads are perfect for sharing with another couple and are served rustically on a slab with a flaky crust and savory, rich ingredients that include heirloom tomatoes, goat cheese and cherried fig. On warmer nights, catch couples cuddling up on the outdoor patio to watch passersby as they gorge on tantalizing desserts, like the flourless mascarpone meringue cake. 2736 Adams Ave., University Heights 750 5th Ave., Gaslamp

SAIL AWAY

WATCH IT!

What can be more romantic than a getaway for just the two of you? Surprise your man with a ticket to a honeymoon-like experience that will whisk both of you away for a wild and wily adventure. Three to four days away in the bleak midwinter gives couples an opportunity to relax and reconnect. Use popular travel websites like Hotwire, Expedia or Kayak to find air tickets and accommodations that won’t burn a hole in your pockets. Remember to pack pack some irresistible clothing to make your holiday sizzle all night long.

3

While we are known to make late entrances, our guys should always be reminded that they MUST be on time. A watch is a great way to help him remember! Buy a watch that he’ll wear often, like the Rip Curl “Detroit.” He’ll be thinking of you every hour! Bonus Tip? Engrave a personal note to remind him how you love him dearly.

KING FOR A NIGHT

6

So your man may not be totally thrilled by the idea of spending a day at the spa… but what if you brought the spa to him? Any man would love an evening of pampering at the hands of his lovely lady. You could pick up some fancy facial treatments, lotions and massage oils, then have your man relax while you scrub, buff and rub away his stresses away. Not only will you enjoy an evening of romantic bonding with your guy, he may actually come out of the experience looking refreshed, relaxed and hotter than ever!

2

KISS ME IN THE RAIN

Looking for another way to say I love you? Make your partner’s wishes come true this Valentine’s Day by creating a personalized coupon book with passes for massages, kisses or anything else that suits your fancy. These love coupons are more like romantic IOU’s, which will spread the love and devotion long past February 14th. Think outside the box, have fun and don’t be shy when he uses these coupons regularly. Pucker up!

4

SLAM DUNK!

Surprise your man with an all expense paid flying lesson, skydiving, helicopter sightseeing trip, concert or anything else that will set his adrenaline pumping and heart racing. For tips on what to do, tune into his hobbies and interest and make at least the afternoon all about him. For example: Getting tickets to your Valentine’s favorite sports team will set his adrenaline pumping. No matter what seats you get he will be sure to appreciate it!

Like they say, the way to a man’s heart is with food! Please your man through his stomach this Valentine’s Day season by taking him out for a night on the town to one of the many romantic restaurants San Diego has to offer. If you are looking for small bites before after dinner delights? Then I would suggest cruising to a divine Spanish hideaway called Costa Brava for tapas. Or perhaps you need a view to set the mood? Check out George’s at the Cove in La Jolla for breathtaking views. Just make sure you order some oysters!

Wherefore art thou Romeo?

It’s Valentine’s Day, your special someone is coming over in an hour and you haven’t gotten them a gift. Don’t fret yet! One of the most creative and heartfelt gifts you can give is a poem. Every man loves feeling appreciated! So grab a pen and paper and start expressing your timeless love for him. Break out your innerpoet and tell him how you cherish having him around. Then present your poem in style by rolling it up and tying a red ribbon around it.

Why not take a dancing class and show him your moves? Fun Pole Fitness located in North Park offers pole dancing classes for later that will get you in great shape and teach you some moves for later. For $99 you get 5 fun classes you can choose from to impress your man. Dancing for your would-be mate has been traced back to the prehistoric times and may even lead to some fun!

Bob Sinclar interview with

by megan vaughn

Legendary superstar, French DJ Bob Sinclar, has made a new mark on the music world with his current Grammy nomination for “Best Reggae Album.” Just days before the February 2011 U.S. tour began, we spoke with Sinclar to get some juicy details about his career and new album “Made In Jamaica.” How did you get started in the industry? When I started there was no industry. I created my own label “Yellow Productions” in 1994 to form an industry. No one wanted to license any dance music especially from France, so creating your own beat in the 90’s was hard. The French scene as it is today started around 1994 with Daft Punk, Etienne De Crecy and myself. This was the time I started to produce and release my music, first within the UK and then around the world. In 1998 I arrived with my project Bob Sinclar and this was when I started the market. Tell me about your new album “Made In Jamaica!” “Made In Jamaica” is a side project. It is a best-of, not a studio album. This is something I did after four years of going to Jamaica and meeting the best singers and producers in the world. The vibe they have is unbelievable! I had the opportunity to record in the best studio and meet Sly & Robbie, the best Reggae producers for the past 40 years. It was so good to spend 15 days with them, locked up in the studio and revisiting all of my songs. This album is original Reggae and I wanted to bring my music into another world! Which one of your productions are you the most proud of? I’m proud of all of my tracks! They were all done at a certain period of time, so of course when I look back now I have more experience and can say that the production is not as good as it is today, but this is normal. Every song was at an amazing period of time. For me it was an amazing gift and opportunity to be in this family of music. Congratulations on your current Grammy nomination for “Best Reggae Album.” Did you anticipate this great achievement? No! I had no distribution in the U.S. Through my label, I put myself on the Internet on platforms like iTunes. A friend of mine told me I should subscribe my album, since I already had independent distribution, and I did. I guess you never know! I was very surprised! It means they have ears because the music is more important than the commercial aspect. Tell us something we don’t know about Bob Sinclar! I have beautiful feet! If you look at a girl, her feet and her hands are the most important. You can have the most amazing girl, but if her feet and hands are not well taken care of, this takes away from her beauty! I think it’s very sexy when girls have their nails painted red! Any final thoughts or shout-outs? I can’t wait to come to surfer paradise! I’ve been there once before and it was an amazing party, San Diego is full of party animals!

Bob Sinclar: made in jamaica French DJ Bob Sinclar returns after 5 Billboard Dance #1’s with a Best Reggae Album Grammy Nomination for his latest album “Made in Jamaica.” According to Sinclar, “This album is original Reggae and I wanted to bring my music into another world.” After collaborating with the top Reggae producer duo Sly & Robbie, Sinclar has given his fans another amazing album with an entirely new and pure Reggae vibe.

ASTROLOGY REHAB

See what determines your sun sign

by cathy moe

How can this be? Astronomer Parke Kunkle and British astrologer Walter Berg made international headlines this January by suggesting the addition of a 13th Sign called Ophiuchus (OFF-ih-YOU-kus) into our Astrological Zodiac calendar. Although this is news to most, Berg has independently championed the 13-Sign astrology system for years through his book The 13 Signs of the Zodiac, published in 1995. Why did it used to be only 12 Signs? There have always been 13 Signs, but when the ancient Babylonians made their charts 4,000 years ago, they decided it was easier to make a 12-Sign system, which is referred to as “Tropical Astrology.” Tropical Astrology is what has been widely used here in America since astrology gained traction in the early 1900’s. What determines your Sign? Your Sign is also called your Sun Sign. The way you determine your Sign is to draw an arrow from the Earth, through the Sun and into space on the day you were born. Whatever constellation the arrow points at determines your Sign. (See chart). What does this mean? If you were born between November 29th and December 17th (the dates may vary according to your birth year, not the current year), you’re now an Ophiuchus. This affects each Sign of the Zodiac. Instead of a Taurus, you may now be an Aries; instead of an Aquarius, you may be a Capricorn. In order to accommodate this into our current system, a whole new set of dates and meanings must be integrated. Did my Sign change? For most people, yes! According to NASA, here’s the breakdown of the 13 Constellations in the Zodiac: So is it official? The American Federation of Astrologers (AFA) stated they will continue to recognize the 12 Tropical Zodiac Signs. Many astrologers have readily agreed that the 13th Sign makes complete sense. Not only does it balance the Zodiac, it gives everyone a Sign so that nobody is left on the “cusp.” NASA, however, credits all 13 because they are all there. There are no shortcuts to the Moon… and as a publication we are going to go with NASA on this one.

Aries { April 19 - May 13 } Taurus { May 14 - June 19 } Gemini { June 20 - July 20 } Cancer { July 21 - August 9 } Leo { August 10 - September 15 } Virgo { September 16 - October 30 } Libra { October 31 - November 22 } Scorpio { November 23 - November 29 } Ophiuchus { November 30 - December 17 }

EXPLAINED: Draw an arrow from the Earth, through the Sun and into space on the day you were born. Whatever constellation the arrow points to determines your Sign. What if I like my old horoscope? Then you must like horoscopes. Remember, change can be good! It is a relevant and necessary factor to our growth and happiness. That ex of yours may have been great at the time but aren’t you happy where you are today? Just recently televisions, computers, cell phones and the internet have become a way of life. Integrating the new horoscope system can be seen as opening yourself to change and rebirth. Who knows what will happen next in your life when you allow this change to occur? What is Ophiuchus? Ophiuchus, in Greek mythology, was a figure holding a serpent, representing the healer, Asclepius. He learned the secrets of extending life after seeing one serpent carrying healing herbs believed to be the Elixir of Life. To prevent the entire human race from becoming immortal, Zeus killed Asclepius with a bolt of lightning and put his image into the sky. What does Ophiuchus mean to all of us now? Could Ophiuchus be a symbol of our incoming future? Could a constellation brought into our consciousness at this time, given credence by the scientific community and recognized by astrologers for its sacred role, be bringing the light to all? The timing is perfect for the healing of our planet, our countries, our businesses and ourselves. If nothing else, let this be a sign that we can save our planet, heal our relationships and live in peace with one another.

Sagittarius { December 18 - January 18 } Capricorn { January 19 - February 15 } Aquarius { February 16 - March 11 } Pisces { March 12 - April 18 }

Meet cathy: Cathy Moe is an international health consultant as well as a writer, lecturer and public speaker regarding astrology. She has been published over 800 times and has done private readings for several well-regarded individuals including Prince Charles of the Royal Family.

kings of promotion

djhere Chris and Pat English, twin brothers and owners of DJhere Productions, provide both San Diego and Las Vegas with some of the most exceptional day and nightlife events. After ringing in 2011 with over 4,000 people at “New Years Eve” at the Hard Rock Hotel, we caught up with DJhere Productions to get a glimpse of what’s in store for 2011.

What is DJhere Productions? DJhere Productions is an event promotion, production and marketing company created 10 years ago by Matt Spencer and Tyler Charman. About six years ago, my brother and I stepped in and really ended up taking it over. Since then we have rebranded and redeveloped it. We do events in San Diego, both day and nightlife, as well as Las Vegas. What are your roles in the company? Pat and I are partners and owners of DJhere Productions. We have different roles to balance each other out. Pat concentrates on the bookings, finances, and operations and I focus more on the marketing and creative aspects. What recent events has DJhere Productions put on in San Diego? We just took part in “New Years Eve” at the Hard Rock Hotel with over 4,000 people. This was also our seventh year participating at our annual Halloween Ball at The Prado, located at Balboa Park. We also do weekly events including Thursday’s at Bar West, Friday’s at The Hard Rock and Saturday’s at The Ivy. What can we expect from you guys in 2011? We are anticipating 2011 to be another big year for DJhere Productions and plan for more growth within San Diego and Las Vegas. Expect more creative and fun events at the top venues in each city! Do you two have girlfriends, or do you find it difficult to have relationships working in this industry? Well, I have a girlfriend (Chris) and he’s newly single (Pat). It’s difficult to have a relationship working in this industry, but when you find a woman with confidence, it definitely helps. Any closing thoughts? Go to djhere.com to get on our guest list!

kings of promotion

EVENTVIBE Tim Ortiz and Matty Allison, two of San Diego’s most well-known kings of promotion, continue to shower San Diego with the ultimate events in nightlife entertainment. After hosting San Diego’s biggest New Years Eve party, “EPIC NYE” at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, we met up with Tim and Matty at FLUXX to get the inside scoop on Eventvibe.com and what they’ve got in store for 2011.

What is Eventvibe.com? TIM: Eventvibe.com is a nightlife portal for the major cities in the Western United States. What is your position with Eventvibe.com? TIM: I am the founder and the CEO. MATTY: I am the COO; I’ve got a big title! What was the most recent event you put on? MATTY: We just produced the New Years Eve event, “EPIC NYE”, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds for about 10,000 people. It was a really nice, big, exciting event with some fantastic DJs. What events can we expect from you both in 2011? TIM: We started off the year with two huge January parties at FLUXX. Next we are doing Felguk and Porter Robinson at House of Blues, which is coming up on February 10th. Then we’ve got Bingo Players, Above & Beyond and Eric Morillo on deck. MATTY: Well, we are starting off with a bang! We’ve got probably six or seven great shows to start out the year. We continue to build and try to bring something new to San Diego. TIM: We also just signed on with Hard Rock and DJhere to help out with talent and promotions for this summers “Intervention Pool Party!” We have a lot of great stuff coming this year! How did you two meet? TIM: I had been doing shows for about 5 years and Matty was just getting into the business. A few years later Matty and I partnered up on a show at Margarita Rocks on Thursday’s. After a year or so we started a show at On Broadway, which eventually led us to build an exciting dance music market in San Diego that is globally recognized. What is your favorite part of your job? MATTY: I’d have to say that my favorite part of my job is probably the same as all of the people attending the events, except we prepare for hours. I love the energy in the room; it’s always a good feeling to see the crowd having a great time. Any shout outs? TIM: Thank you to all the people who come to our shows and to everyone on the Eventvibe crew! You all work so hard to make the shows happen. We really love and appreciate you all! MATTY: To my partner, Tim Ortiz, and the rest of the EV crew! Thanks to all the guys that support us. That’s why this thing really happens; we’ve got a great support team.

kings of promotion

SFiNX Omid Sabet, co-owner of SFiNX Productions and nightlife connoisseur, continues to impress San Diego with outstanding nightlife events. We met up with Omid at the Hard Rock Hotel, where he recently promoted the “New Years Eve” event for over 4,000 people.

What is SFiNX Productions? SFiNX is a San Diego nightlife company that focuses on throwing new parties and creating a delightful experience for people when they go out! What is your role with SFiNX Productions? I am the co-owner of the company and I oversee all of the management and productions. What recent events have you hosted in San Diego? Our latest event was our absolutely amazing “New Years Eve” party at the Hard Rock Hotel, which sold out a week in advance. We’ve hosted Halloween parties and special events as well. Every week it’s different, exciting and trendy and we try to keep everyone surprised! What can we expect from SFiNX in 2011? Lots of new events, something that you’ll be taking home to your friends and saying, “wow, you missed a great night!” We’re going to have lots of parties hosted by big celebrities, live performances, huge DJ’s for pool parties, sexy girls and anything else you can imagine but I can’t spill the beans! What got you started in the industry? I got started in the industry due to the lack of nightlife at UCSD. What is your favorite part of your job? My favorite part is definitely seeing an amazing party come together and knowing you’re responsible for it. Are there any shout out’s you’d like to give? San Diego nightlife in general is awesome! I’d like to give a shout out to the industry!

Healthy Breakfast Delights Without a doubt, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. People who eat a healthy breakfast snack less and tend to be thinner than those eat an unhealthy breakfast or skip it all together. Eating correctly in the morning can literally be the difference between good health and poor health. Feeding your body correctly in the morning will help give you a high level of energy throughout the day. These five options are all 400 calories or less, low in fat and easy on the wallet!

by Micah Skye, L.N.M.T., N.C.

Bowl 1Acai

Calories: 370 Calories from fat: 90 Acai organically grown palm berry from the rain forests of Brazil and is packed with proteins, antioxidants, vitamins and mineral. According to Oprah Winfrey, it is the number one “superfood” in the world. The acai bowl is currently the most popular way to enjoy this superfood and is generally served with fruit juices, honey, soy milk, fresh fruits and crunchy granola.

Smoothie 2 Fruit Calories: 180 Calories from Fat: 30

According to Doctor Oz, your morning meal can play a key role in your weight loss efforts by helping to curb your mid-morning and afternoon appetites. Food choices at breakfast time determine your blood sugar levels that produce glucose, which is the energy that gets you through your day. Try a protein-rich fruit smoothie by adding soy protein, raw nuts or grains such as wheat or barley.

white 4 Egg Parfait omelet Makeover 3 Granola 5 Oatmeal Calories: 400 Calories from Fat: 46

Calories: 173 Calories from Fat: 7

Calories: 166 Calories from fat: 32

Low in fat and high in protein and fiber, this is the right formula for a great, low-fat breakfast. Yogurt, fresh fruit and crunchy granola all make a great combination of flavor and texture. You can find then on the menu of many cafe’s and juice bars. When shopping, look for soy yogurt at Trader Joe’s in several flavors if you are looking to avoid dairy.

Egg whites make great tasting and healthy omelets. Not only are they fat-free and cholesterolfree, egg whites provide a high quality source of protein. Sautéed vegetables like onion, zucchini, bell peppers, tomatillo, yellow squash, garlic and tomato make it a real treat. When ordering at a restaurant, remember to skip the dairy and meat to avoid the fat calories.

With just a few small nips and tucks you can revitalize this old classic into something beautiful and delicious. One cup of oatmeal has over five grams of protein and only 166 calories! With just a few small additions you can create your own oatmeal makeover. Try adding blueberries, almonds, some honey and almond milk for a healthy, low-fat breakfast that will jumpstart your day.
