october 2011 | editor’s note his time of year is one of my favorites. There is something romantic and so cozy about October welcoming fall in, with the leaves changing and a little rainfall making an appearance or two. I don’t know about you, but I look forward to the fall fashion, pumpkins, hot drinks, nights by the fire playing board games and watching some football. It’s the time of year where everyone starts to shift their plans around and spend time indoors with friends and family as we start to look forward to the holidays to come in the winter months.

This year is actually my first October as a San Diego resident and I couldn’t think of a better place to be! I recently made the move from Orange County (originally from Oregon) to be closer to my boyfriend, Kiptyn Locke. It wasn’t just Kiptyn that got me to make the move, although he’s pretty amazing, but San Diego romanced me as well with its beautiful beaches, eclectic sub-cities and the welcoming and caring communities. I am especially impressed by the people of San Diego, their pride of this beautiful place they call home and their desire to live “green.” I guarantee you will find Kiptyn and me out on an eco-friendly date as I continue to explore my new community!

With October comes Breast Cancer Awareness month. It isn’t the most cheery topic and sadly it has affected many of us, either personally or through those close to us.

What it does do however is give us all the opportunity to get involved on several levels to help raise funds and awareness that will help battle this ugly disease. Kiptyn and I were honored with the opportunity to help kick off Breast Cancer Awareness month at the Hard Rock San Diego this year with Kelly Osbourne at their Pinktober event, which included an impressive light show, specialty pink drinks and of course a reason for everyone to dress in pink fashion!

On the nights you find yourself out on the town, remember it’s also that time of year for Oktoberfest! The Linkery looks to be a promising place to find a good brew and a hearty festive meal with one of their specialty sausages, as noted in our hot spots department this month. Halloween will also be greeting us soon with all the costume parties and fun gatherings. I’m still stuck on where I’ll be or what to dress up as, but I can assure you it will be memorable with all that San Diego has to offer!

I hope this festive month brings you plenty of reasons to gather with your friends and family, and maybe even some romantic moments enjoying the crisp fall air.

Born in Minnesota and raised in the country, Sarra Hansen is no stranger to riding bicycles, swimming, fishing and ice-skating. After a brief stint on the East Coast, Hansen moved to San Diego to begin working on her modeling career. After landing this month’s cover and back feature editorial with photographer James Norton this month, Hansen stated “Working with the Fashion 5.0 team is like hanging out with your coolest group of friends. They are just simply cool.”

Check out restaurants in your neighborhood that are certified as “Green Restaurants” such as Burger Lounge, George’s At The Cove, Croce’s, Pizza Fusion and Jsix! If you want a more intimate setting, try cooking an organic meal at home. Lighting a few soy or beeswax candles.

taylor Swift Taylor Swift has made believers out of all of us. Her diary-themed music has captured the hearts of many and has earned her four Grammy’s and over 20 million album sales, not to mention the title of the most awarded album in country music history for her 2008 album Fearless.

“The cool thing about this is that my parents have never pushed me. It’s always been [my] desire and love to do this. That’s what makes this so sweet. If I had been pushed, if I didn’t love this, I would probably not have been able to get this far.”

Swifts’ desire and determination has helped to catapult her to superstardom.

In 2006, her first album, titled Taylor Swift, was released and went multi-platinum. The album included the hit “Tim McGraw” which made her a household name. Swifts sophomore album, Fearless, won her a Grammy for “Album of the Year” in 2008. Last year her third album, Speak Now, was released and has been rumored to chronicle her romantic relationships with movie star Taylor Lautner and musician John Mayor.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly regarding Speak Now, Swift stated “For me, putting out an album means that every song on that album has to be something that I thought was the best thing I’ve ever written when I wrote it.”

Swift may be the princess of country, but multiple acting gigs have kept her occupied as well. In the past four years she has been on and off the screen appearing in shows such as America’s Got Talent, CSI, Saturday Night Live and Dancing with the Stars. On the big screen, Swift has been a part of Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience and Hannah Montana: The Movie and Valentine’s Day. Currently, Swift is busy with her Speak Now World Tour, where she plans on performing in 24 states. “I’m really excited about everything that has to do with telling people about this album, because I’m just so proud of it” she stated in The Wall Street Journal interview. “You know, promotion is all different—you’re never doing too much of the same thing.

"There are magazine shoots and interviews and talk shows and performances and concert specials. I like the variety of it, it’s definitely something you have to go into saying to yourself, ‘I will not get tired. I will not complain."

As most people are unaware of every local environmental issue that surrounds us, it would seem unimaginable to even consider tracking the entire planet. While each of us may hold something dear, it is important to note one special San Diego company that works on environmental issues in a concerned effort to make world a better place, The San Diego Zoo. Our Zoo, though its many efforts, has made an enormous impact through both local and global conservation work that has helped to preserve many species and their habitats.

Andean bears

The elusive Andean Bear lives in the Andes Mountains. It the only species of South American bear, found in a narrow strip running from western Venezuela through the Andes in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, and ending in northwest Argentina.

monkeying around in peru The vision of San Diego Zoo Global is to “become a world leader at connecting people to wildlife and conservation.” This organization is comprised of The San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park and the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research. Their main focus is to study animals in their native habitats, while using research to find solutions to prevent species from becoming extinct. In addition to several local projects, there are currently 230 researchers doing work in 35 different countries.

One of the major projects in action right now is in the Cocha

Cashu Biological Station in the Peruvian Amazon. It is one of the world’s last remaining truly ‘wild’ areas. This station is located in the Manu National Park, which spans across 4 million-acres and is one of the most immaculate ecosystems.

Dr. Ron Swaisgood, who has been with San Diego Zoo Global since 1995, has been studying the Andean bears in Peru along with their partner, the Spectacle Bear Conservation Society, since 2009.

They use GPS satellites to determine and place boundaries on the areas that the bears inhabit.

They found that water is a limited

resource in this area. Also, the Andean bears eat Pasallo trees, which is an inefficient source of food energy for them. Because of this, bears consistently lose weight during the dry season. On the other hand, Sapote trees are available during the wet season, enabling the bears to fatten up.

Swaisgood explains, “If humans were to develop and remove the trees, the bears would have less water and be robbed of their food resources, leading to their extinction. This is why the team has developed boundaries to protect this land.”

Manu National Park is the most biologically diverse region of the Amazon for terrestrial life. The reserve is a destination for birdwatchers from all over the world.

It is home to over 1,000 species of birds, more than the number found in the United States and Canada combined.

California Condor

Condor numbers dramatically declined in the 20th century due to poaching, lead poisoning, and habitat destruction.

A conservation plan was put in place by the government which led to the capture of all 22 remaining wild condors in 1987. These surviving birds were bred at the San Diego Wild Animal Park.

Another animal that researchers give special attention to is the California condor, which was once on the brink of extinction. The conservation work is supported partly

by The Foundation of the Zoological Society of San Diego. As a result of their work about 150 condors have hatched at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Others have been released into the wild in California, Arizona and Baja California. Now, there is a first-ever, live Web camera that show the con-

Clapper Rail

The light-footed clapper rail is found exclusively in salt marshes between Santa Barbara, California and San Quintin Bay, Baja California, Mexico.

Due to the loss and degradation of salt marshes the light-footed clapper rail species has declined. The species was listed as endangered in 1970.

This is a privilege considering the condors only breed every other year between December and April. The goal is to help people understand the wildlife that he researchers study.

The Light-Footed Clapper Rail, another bird that is bred at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, is only found along

California’s coast from Santa Barbara to Baja California. This secretive, endangered species has successfully been bred and released back into the wild. July 19th, 2011, marks the tenyear point of the breeding program as well as the 300th bird to be released. This event was administrated by the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Sea World, the Chula Vista Nature Center, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and a group of independent wildlife biologists known as ‘Team Clapper Rail.’

Dr. Swaisgood serves the Zoological Society of San Diego as Head of the Division of Applied Animal Ecology at the center for Conservation and Research for Endangered Species.

Michael Mace, Curator of birds, explained that the Clapper Rails were common in marshlands in southern California but became endangered due to loss of the coastal wetland habitats from highway and home development.

Coastal wetlands have been revitalized and now help stimulate the bird population. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park received their first clapper rails in 2005 and now 43 have hatched at this location, making it the largest breeding center of clapper rails. After the chicks hatch, they are given a few months to mature at the Safari Park where they are watched and nurtured. Then they are transferred to the Chula Vista Nature Center, which is very similar to their natural habitat. Here they learn to feed on their own and are conditioned to live in the wild.

They are typically released into

the wild within one year of being born and there are now 440 known pairs in the wild.

The Light-Footed Clapper Rails are important to our environment because they are an “umbrella species” in that they provide an umbrella of protection to many other species that rely on their existence.

According to Mace, “We’ll know we’re successful when we don’t have to do as much hands-on management. We try to correct the situation and leave it in a good position so there’s less human intervention.”

Researchers and scientists are working hard to preserve many animals around the world as well as maintaining a safe place for them in the San Diego Zoo and

Safari Park, which serves as a safe environment where scientists can study. The hope is to create a future in which people and wildlife can thrive together in harmony.

The challenge is to be an active member of the community and do your part to help! It can be as easy as making a few simple adjustments to your daily habits. Project Ethos Project Ethos was introduced to The House of Blues for the second time this year in San Diego on September 15, 2011. Their event merged a collaboration of local fashion, music and art. Rocking the stage was The Maul Shoppe, Cuckoo Chaos and Republic of Letters, who were followed by a fashion show featuring Fredrick’s of Hollywood, as well as work from five students from The Art Institute of San Diego: Cecilia Torres, Elina Sheripova, Haley Hanson, Amanda Alkas and Steven Mayor. When planning your garden, it’s better to start too small than to start too large. In order to enjoy your garden, you must be able to control it.

Don’t get too ambitious and remember, you can always add more.

Choose wisely

Some plants are more productive than others.

Choosing plants that fruit or produce quickly is your best option. One great choice is Arugula, which has become widely popular in gourmet cuisine. Arugula produces quickly and consistently, whereas tomatoes take a lot of time and care.

recycle seeds

When you buy a packet of seeds, you generally receive more than you need. Find a friend that wants to join you in your endeavor for a fun and frugal way to split the costs.

Sprouting seeds from a delicious apple or avocado is another great way to get a plant for free.

Share tools

You can cut costs on tools, soil and other things like fertilizer by finding a garden buddy to split costs and share with. This also gives you a partner and support system on your journey in the garden.

The most important thing to remember for your green thumb adventure is to have fun! Remember, your garden doesn’t need to be perfect. Pick a favorite fruit or vegetable, plant a few seeds and have fun watching them grow to maturity. No taste of success is greater than the one you can put on the dinner table and eat!

With summer ending, what better way to keep the vibes alive than an all-inclusive and all-expense paid trip with your friends! SFiNX Productions and Tao Management made it happen this September by bringing 50 of the hottest Southern California girls to sin city for a 3 day, 2 night extravaganza!

All the ladies arrived early at Kate Sessions Park in Pacific Beach in anticipation of departing on the luxury charter bus. Getting the full VIP treatment, the bus was stocked with endless snacks, drinks and gift bags filled with SFiNX swag including watches, gift certificates to local boutiques, water bottles, energy drinks and of course the September issue of Fashion 5.0 Magazine!

Rolling into Vegas in style, they checked into the Trump International Hotel and were assigned four to a room. According to the girls on the trip, the suites at the Trump are incredible—MTV crib status! The amenities included both a king size bed and queen size couch bed, kitchenette and a huge bathtub with a Jacuzzi. Even the bathroom had TVs built into the mirrors. What was really unique and classy about the Trump Hotel is that it was 100% smoke free and was conveniently near a huge shopping mall. Excellent choice SFiNX! The ladies eagerly unpacked their luggage and settled into their suites and got ready for their first night out. Starting at Lavo Italian Restaurant inside The Palazzo, they were served welcome drinks and tasty Mediterranean appetizers of pizza and calamari. Feeling refueled and energized, everyone was ready to tear it up at Lavo Nightclub.

Lavo Nightclub possesses an intimate nightlife experience and it embraces a Moroccan décor making it a sexy and exotic superb club! Melody Dinckan, one of the selected 50 hottest girls on the trip, appreciated the private table and bottle service aspect of the night. She loved how refreshing and convenient it was to have a drink at hand while dancing. The night was a success and everyone couldn’t wait until the next day for the pool party!

The ladies woke up to disappointing weather, but were ready to party rain or shine. So they suited up with a liquid coat and headed to TAO Beach where only in September it is Spring Break! Entering the pool, it resembled a tropical secluded island, there was a live DJ spinning the latest hip hop and house tracks in the center of the pool and spacious day beds scattered everywhere to lounge and mostly dance on! The place was covered with forty foot bamboo trees to give it that Asian feel.

Not only is TAO Beach one of the most sophisticated beach party spots in Las Vegas, but the cuisine is just as satisfying. Throughout the day, the girls were served an assortment of signature TAO specials of sushi, quesadillas and chicken skewers. Plenty of photographers were there, including Seva Kalashnikov from Napkin Nights, which is the most popular party picture Web site in Vegas! Of course nobody wanted to leave but they knew they had to rest up and for their last night in town & promptly departed at 5:30 p.m.!

Looking fabulous in their stilettos and dresses, the group headed over to The Venetian to dine at what is considered the best restaurant in Las Vegas, TAO Asian Bistro. After sipping on fancy alcoholic drinks and eating delectable appetizers, it was finally time to boogie down inside TAO Nightclub! On a side note for all you future TAO goers: If you eat at the restaurant, your cover into the club is included. TAO Nightclub was definitely a great choice for a last night out. This club had a high-energy atmosphere, go-go dancers and other live performances, two main rooms playing a variety of music and an outside terrace overlooking the strip! The girls enjoyed two dance floor tables as DJ Vice played an amazing set of mash-up, hip-hop and house well past 3:00 a.m.

As the next morning crept up, everyone was very exhausted and sadly trekked back on the party bus to depart back to San Diego. Omid Sabet, the owner of SFiNX Productions, stated his favorite part of every Vegas trip is the interesting stories as the girls hop on the bus. According to Sabet “Every story I heard was a good one. It was an overall very successful trip.�
