ere we are in September. School starts back up, the last of vacations are underway, and seasonal changes mean different workouts and diets. With all of this is in mind we selected a fresh crop of fitness elites to help guide you through this time and offer inspiration to keep going. This month MOST Fitness continues our dedicated coverage of fitness trends and those in the community continuing to reach new limits. As always our celebrities come from different backgrounds with a plethora of approaches to living healthy lifestyles; mind, body, and spirit. Racing to the cover this month is an athlete that refuses to slow down. We laced up our writers to speak with Sanya Richards-Ross. With many gold medals under her belt from the 2012 Summer Olympics, Richards-Ross spoke with us about her preparations for the upcoming Olympics next year in Rio de Janeiro. Throw her in a heat with anyone, and this runner will leave them in the dust. Trust us you don’t want to even try. MOST Fitness is lucky to have an athlete of such caliber come to our September issue, and we thank her immensely for taking the time to stop by. Off the track and into the chef’s kitchen, we spoke with celebrity chef and all-around wonderful human Carla Hall. Ms. Hall is a twotime Top Chef competitor and currently sits on our favorite daytime show, The Chew. The always humble and generous Hall shared stories of her time on television, her journey to open her first restaurant, and a delish dish that’s guaranteed to leave you satisfied. After reading her interview you’ll be scrambling to get more of Carla Hall, we recommend watching her past seasons on Top Chef – you won’t be disappointed. This month we continue to connect our readers with the very best trainers and fitness experts. Ashley Conrad is no exception. Both Aliotti and Day dedicate themselves to helping others reach their fitness goals. We hope you aren’t surprised to see Sandy Hill in this issue. Ms. Hill is a champion of strength, having just competed in the 2015 CrossFit Games. Everyone has either heard of crossfit or is an active participant in the training program. This being the case, you know how tough Hill is to compete in these games. Another competitor we can’t stop talking about this month is the truly remarkable Justine Moore. Courageous in more ways than one, Moore shared with MOST about her time competing with anxiety. We thank Justine for her strength – both mental and physical – and sharing her journey as a competitor with you all. Don’t worry, we didn’t forget to mention Vlad Yudin. You have either heard his name, his work, or maybe even both. Distinguished filmmaker Vlad Yudin sat down with our staff to share the secrets behind some of his work and the way he approaches working with others in the fitness community. With an imposing list of celebrity clients, Bradley Cooper, Kate Hudson, P. Diddy and Penelope Cruz, the uber talent can transform the body in a matter of seven days. The founder and CEO of Clutch Bodyshop is a game changer, in a highly saturated market. Most Fitness spoke to the USC graduate and highly sought after fitness expert about those sick abs and how she delivers a personal brand of authenticity you can trust. Hailing from Carmel California, the Conrad’s were a tightly knit family with a focus on school and sports. Along with her brother, playing every sport imaginable, Ashley started with soccer at the age of four. From that moment on her parents never missed a single swim meet, baseball game, softball game, basketball tournament or track meet. “It is pretty amazing to think about the level of dedication they had, supporting my brother and me, through everything.” Her mother’s beautiful smile translates to the beautiful person that she

In high school, Conrad was pretty good at basketball, among other things. The local media even covered her games. Around the start of junior year, the press started calling her “Clutch basketball star Ashely Conrad.” The moniker stems from the players uncanny ability to nail gamewinning shots with precision in high-pressure situations. Shortly after starting her unique brand of fitness in Los Angeles, Ashely kept getting calls from agents and managers panicking because their clients only had a couple of weeks to transform for a role or shoot. Finding herself, yet again, in high-pressure situations and being asked to do in two weeks what would normally take 8-12 weeks, she recalls those early days on the basketball court. Essentially, she was transforming the body from the inside out just like an auto body shop. After marrying the two together, she arrived at the Clutch Bodyshop. On the cusp of opening their first major facility in Los Angeles’s Arts District, these are exciting times. The new facility will contain an invite-only training club, retail, and global offices. Retail will offer their signature products to allow their clients to live the Clutch Bodyshop lifestyle and transform. When discussing lessons learned, the fitness trainer is forthright.

Having made mistakes along the way, Ashely takes pride in getting back up, dusting herself off and thinking, “How can I learn from this so that it never happens again?” She prefers taking accountability for every situation, not just the ones that she caused. The biggest mistake people can make in life is blaming the person who burned them. With her can-do attitude, she asks herself, “What could I have done better to avoid this situation; why didn’t I see sooner, that this was this person’s intention?” For this reason, Ashley has learned from every mistake and has used them to elevate herself to a higher level of success. Being the CEO of her company is a labor of love that reflects in her drive, passion, and a fierce dedication. Over the last two years, Ashley has

brought in three business partners; her brother, Amber Elizabeth Dodzweit, and Greg Alterman. Her brother runs the Clutch accounting. Amber, a boss in the industry, is not only a star Clutch Bodyshop Athlete but is extremely smart and runs a lot of the accounting, shipping, and logistics alongside Ashely’s brother. As a team they all “jam on all our marketing.” Greg has been a close personal friend for ten years and is the founder and CEO of the mega-successful clothing brand Alternative Apparel and Juice Served Here. Always looking up to him, he makes the perfect addition to the Clutch Bodyshop team. Most Fitness spoke to Ashely about the launch of her new line of snacks that is all highprotein, non-GMO, no sugar alcohols, no artificial ingredients and all whole-food ingredients. A delicious snack designed to bridge the gap in this area. “Right now, you can either buy highprotein, low-sugar bars filled with fake, crap ingredients or natural protein bars that are loaded with low-quality protein and tons of sugar.” This innovative approach will undoubtable provide a tasty and healthier alternative. “There is a ton of planning and thought put behind every single thing we create as a brand, so my expectation of it being successful is always high,” says the fitness talent. Always expecting greatness, Ashley is shocked when something isn’t successful. Having experienced this as well, “I don’t pause for a minute, I just go back to the drawing board and try to figure out why and how to fix it.” Highly successful at self-branding, we asked the personal trainer about tips on promoting your brand. Quite simply she states, “Two words, ‘do you’”. Often, people will try so hard to be like other people who have had success in their respective fields, but that never works because people can sniff out authenticity. that were working for other people. “I don’t look at other people’s social media numbers or even really care what mine are; I just focus on pushing out content that is true to me, my message and my brand.” As a result, with Ashley, you can trust you are getting authenticity.

Most readers are thinking, where can we sign up? In a heavily saturated market, it is difficult to know if a company’s supplemental products are providing what they advertise. We asked Ashley about starting her personal brand of supplements. “If I give one of my clients a protein shake that has hidden filler, that could bloat them out before a shoot, I would lose my job.” The line started as a private line that was available only to clients. Once she learned about the lies and fraud that goes on in the sports nutrition industry, she decided to release it to the mass market. “I was so upset by all the false claims and crappy ingredients that I felt passionate about giving people something that is exactly what it advertises and is made using only the absolute, highest-quality ingredients.” Through her quality brand, she hopes to force others to raise the bar on their products and standards. In addition to supplements, proper diet and exercise are fundamental. “Supplements like fatburners and pre-workouts should be used to help accelerate results from proper diet and exercise -- not in light of it.” The fitness talent candidly states, “A fat-burner is going to do absolutely nothing for you by itself; there is no magic pill.” The one product she would recommend if resources

e spoke with Carla two days after signing the lease to the home of her upcoming restaurant Southern Kitchen. With an expected opening in the fall, Southern Kitchen will be serving up soulfully good southern food. Carla explained that all the sides offered on the menu will be vegetarian using the best seasonal food, with the focus on the way her ancestors ate southern food. Comfort food and southern food often make us think of fried food right? Well, Carla knows it is really about the vegetables, beans and colors. “Without giving up my heritage, what I want to do is say, ‘I may have to change how I eat it, but I don’t want to chuck my heritage because people say it’s not healthy.’” Southern Kitchen’s proud new home will be located in Brooklyn, New York. We had to ask, why Brooklyn? “Brooklyn chose us. When I went to see the space I took a friend and we peeked in the windows. I felt this tingle sensation in my left arm.” Even as she was pursuing other options, Carla always felt the space in Brooklyn was going to be the restaurant’s home. Right away, Carla knew she would be moving into a strong community, full of life and energy. “I want to know everyone who has business and lives around there. I want them to get to know me.” >>>

arla burst out into the public arena during her appearance on the fifth season of Top Chef. Carla quickly became a fan favorite, not just for her warmth and optimism, but her skill of cooking and unmatched passion and commitment. Viewers ourselves, we could not get enough of Carla. With her signature “Hootie Hoo,” Carla quickly cooked her way through fellow competitors and right into our hearts.

scratch. In 48 hours. Yeah - this is no joke. With this level of competition and pressure, you would imagine anything but success. But as we have told you, Carla shies away from no challenge. “The turning point was right after Restaurant Wars, I thought I was going home. That is when I started winning challenges.” Armed with a new sense of clarity and drive, Carla would go on to the finale and finish 3rd.

Carla’s journey onTop Chef New York was surprising to her. Selected for the cast, Carla was simply excited to be a part of the process and be given a chance. Not too surprising, the ever humble Carla went into the audition process for Top Chef with very few expectations. Focused on the opportunities, she was excited just to be able to audition. And low and behold she was selected and thrust into the competitive ring, and being judged on national television for her cooking. “Life gives you everything you need to get better, to progress, to grow. I have a fear of being judged, it’s my cross to bear. And I find myself on this show, being judged.” Since her mid-20’s, Carla had been doing medi-physical work. And when she began to feel overwhelmed by the pressures and difficulties of the show, she knew she had to go inward to get through the lesson. Breathing through every single piece of it, she was able to let go of her fear. She began to realize that no one had ever died at the judges’ table, so why not embrace being there? Win or lose. The opportunities to be put in front of the judges were chances to learn and become a fiercer competitor. This realization was a turning point for Carla, coming right after the Restaurant Wars’ competition. From then on, Carla was the one to beat. Carla managed to stay above water, navigating through the first few competitions.

Shortly after finishing, Carla returned to her catering business. Attention growing from her popularity on Bravo, Carla’s small business was thrust into a tailspin. Business was literally booming, going from 0 to 60 overnight. In the midst of this catering calamity, guess who comes knocking? Top Chef: All Stars. Carla was not ready. Jumping head first back into the belly of the competition beast was not a feat she was so eager to repeat. Carla passed on the offer not once, but twice. Then came the advice, go on the show, let the world know that you are done catering, make it part of your business plan. Armed with a drive toward self-improvement and a new business plan Carla packed up her knives and headed back to Top Chef.

Then came Restaurant Wars. A Top Chef classic competition, about midway through every season. Restaurant Wars is a cook-off unlike any other on TV. Contestants are split into two teams and are tasked to create a restaurant. From

Can you tell us the story of how you joined The Chew? “When they were pitching The Chew they had seen hundreds of chefs. Just after I had finished Top Chef I went to New York to meet with them. They did not pick me. Since they were taking the long-running soap opera, All My Children, off the air they wanted to have personalities already recognizable to the public. we were only together for 20 minutes, six days later they announced us as the cast. I remember thinking when we did the promo shoots it was special, it felt like one of the best play dates ever. We’re all different and it works. Having enough differences works. How boring would it be if we were all the same.” What are some of your favorite memories from The Chew? “There have been a couple, one of the favorites was Daphne surprising us with her pregnancy. Another, when I fell off the chair, it was crazy and everyone could laugh because we’re such good friends. And it was hilarious. Dressing up for Halloween, especially this last one, because we don’t take ourselves too seriously. We dressed up like The View and the Spice Girls. There was a moment when Mario was making mashed potatoes with olive oil. I love it when someone is making something and you’ve never thought of doing it. The creative part of your brain goes into a tail spin. I have those moments with everyone on the show.” inding a healthy balance in your life is easier said than done, especially with food. Carla loves teaching cooking classes, and this month she takes us to school. “A recipe is only a guide; you have to connect with it. Whenever you are outside of yourself trying to get what someone else has you’re set up to fail.” How can you conquer your diet? Carla says follow your pallet. If you like sweet things, then add sweet spices to your proteins. There are easy ways to boost the flavors of the food you eat. “90% of fats and sugars we consume are outside of the home.” What? Yeah that’s right. The best way to beat this game is start with raw ingredients, and you will be one step ahead. Step two, head to your kitchen and start busting some more myths. Cooking healthy and delicious meals does not need to take the whole day. We’re now living in the time of 30-minute meals. prep work the day before. And when you have the time, take the day. “We want this really quick thing. It didn’t take us overnight to get where we are. Take a Sunday and make a long dish. Say this is my entertainment.”

Active at a young age, Carla towered above most of her peers. Not too surprising, Carla participated in basketball and track. As much as she enjoyed track (basketball was not her cup of tea), Carla was not passionate about running. She continued running with friends long after school, until her husband introduced her to Bikram yoga. Carla had previously tried and enjoyed chi running, a meditated form of running. And she had to ask; can I meditate and exercise at the same time? As soon as she tried Bikram she fell in love with the structure, the 26 poses, the ability to watch your improvement right before your eyes. “When I meditate and I’m breathing I’m doing better at my job and I’m more present. I think about what I’m going to eat, if I don’t eat right classes will be harder.” Carla told us that she was more mindful throughout the entire day, and this made her realize there would be no other workout for her. but this is three hours to yourself. No phone. No work. No outside distractions. Carla calls this “my time,” when no one can get to her. “I see potential in every single person. Everyone is a light. If everybody would do what they’re passionate about it’d be a different world.” arla is no stranger to philanthropy, and when we brought up the topic she was eager to share her many projects. Carla has been working with GENYOUth, a project that empowers children to understand their bodies and helps them get good food. GENYOUth focuses on giving youth a voice to make the change they need and become self-advocates for living healthier lives. Close to home, Carla has been working with the Washington DC Central Kitchen, where they feed the homeless 300 meals a day. They also have a program teaching people to cook and helping them get back into the workforce. “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach the man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Hold on there’s more. Carla sits on the board of the Pajama Program. With chapters around the country, the Pajama Program seeks to give children in need new pajamas and books. There are so many ways that you can get involved and we encourage you to check out these programs or ones close to home. Donating your money, resources or even time helps more than you might now. Successful cookbooks, cookie production, The Chew and now an upcoming restaurant, how can Carla juggle all of this? Well, living a well balance and healthy life. But Carla does not want to stop there. Carla is driven to inspire others, and wants to find a way to continue doing that through cooking. Her cookbook, Comfort Foods Around the World, focused on how

different cultures interact with similar ingredients. Carla wants to continue focusing on how to bring people together amidst difficult social events and use cooking to help us come together and see how the differences can be strengths. So where will you see Carla next? Only time will tell. But rest assured you will be blown away by her passion and drive to change lives and ability to share her light with you, and her delicious cooking.

1 large eggplant or a dozen mini (“fairy tale�) eggplants 1 large onion 2 medium zucchini 2 medium summer squash 1 cup cherry or grape tomatoes Several fresh basil leaves, thinly sliced Salt and pepper 1. Prepare the eggplant by slicing it into 1/2inch rounds (if using one large) or slicing in half lengthwise (if using mini). Sprinkle lightly with salt and set aside for about 15 minutes. 2. Slice the onion into 1/2-inch slices. Heat the grill to medium-high and lightly oil the grill so the vegetables don’t stick. Place the eggplant on the grill and cook a few minutes per side until lightly browned, then do the same with the onion. Remove the vegetables and set aside to cool. 3. While the eggplant and onion are cooling, cut the zucchini lengthwise into long ribbons (use a vegetable peeler or a mandolin), then cut the summer squash in half lengthwise, then slice thinly into half-moons. Halve the cherry tomatoes. 4. Arrange the vegetables in layers on a platter or shallow salad bowl, starting with the zucchini ribbons on the bottom, then add the summer squash, eggplant, tomatoes, and onion. Sprinkle the basil over the top and drizzle the Tomato Water Vinaigrette over everything, then finish off with some freshly ground black pepper. Bring to the table arranged this way, then mix it all together at the table just before serving.

The goal of the Games is to find the uber-fit out there. There are three parts to the Games. The parts whittle down the athletes from the Open stage which is athletes from around the world, then regionals and then the Cross Fit Games in California. From thousands and thousands of athletes the Games are designed to establish the most fit man and woman. At the time of this writing we are able to share with you that on her rookie outing she finished, impressively, as the fourth most fit woman in her category, just two points shy of sharing a podium. This is impressive as her first participation in the CrossFit Games. Sandy has so many adventures that it’s hard to decide which to focus on. She is only one of two American Women to climb the Seven Summits. And she has more mountains she still wants to climb (literally). Sandy is strong, tough, a force. As an athlete she talks with us about female athletes pre Title IX. But growing up before Title IX does not seem to have limited her. This woman is an athlete. She is also an author and contributor to several major magazines. Her journals are captivating as she describes in detail her athletic adventures. Mountain traveler, CrossFit competitor, author, rancher, and entertainer, it is clear that Ms. Hill loves a challenge in many flavors and conquers them all. One of her books, Mountain her personal tribute to mountains, filled with black and white and color photographs, 7 short essays, and peoples’ experiences with their own mountains. MFM: Every athlete who is a CrossFit competitor has a “moment of realization” story about when they decided that CrossFit was something for them. What were you doing during your moment, and what made you realize that CrossFit was for you? SH: CrossFit training is about functional fitness, and I have been training this “old school” way, albeit not at this intensity, when I lived in New York for almost 35 years. So my “aha” moment with CrossFit happened after I moved to LA, the first time I walked into Paradiso’s Gym, my first exposure to CrossFit and still, my local gym: a big open space to move around in, with pull-up bars, barbells and weights on the perimeter and some ropes and rings hanging from the ceiling. MFM: You started training at Paradiso’s Gym to keep yourself fit for future mountain climbing expeditions. With mountain climbing being one of the most dangerous athletic activities on the planet, requiring superior strength and endurance levels, what about CrossFit made you see qualifying at CrossFit Games as your next “Everest”? SH: I don’t think of mountain climbing as especially dangerous. It is likely that driving a car or drinking sugary drinks are greater threats to life than climbing. You just read more about climbing deaths because they are dramatic. But qualifying for the CrossFit Games is, to me, like aspiring to climb Everest because both are lofty ambitious huge goals, and achieving them requires many months of planning, occasional setbacks which take some problem solving to work around, immense physical effort, and personal discipline. MFM: You have worked with several trainers to help you prepare just before the CrossFit Games. When you first started, and later, which areas of training gave you the most challenges, and which areas did you surprise yourself?

SH: While I have always trained for strength and endurance (which served me well for climbing mountains, riding rodeo and distance kayaking and SUP), I didn’t possess any particular physical skills at all before I decided to try and qualify for the Crossfit Games: for example, I couldn’t do a pullup and I had never tried Olympic Weightlifting. I sought out professional help to learn these skills, because I DID have the sense to realize that improvement was not just a matter of getting stronger. There was considerable skill involved. So, at first, gymnastics and weighlifting were my least favorite things to train, because they were my weaknesses. The biggest surprise came when my feelings shifted, and now gymnastics and Olympic Lifting are my favorite activities. It is no coincidence that I have become much more skilled in both disciplines… MFM: Some of the summits where you’ve climbed, have an on-site grave yard for climbers who’ve perished and get buried there due to the difficulty of getting them off the summit and back home. Did you ever have any close call moments which made you think that you might not make it home? SH: I came close to dying on Everest in 1996, at 26,000 feet, after becoming stranded without food, water or supplemental oxygen on descent in a blinding and fierce snowstorm which prevented me and other members of my team from getting back to our tents and supplies. Many people who were members of other summit teams perished that night, but all of the group I was with survived and without injury. I have always attributed our survival to the strength of the individuals I climbed with, and the fact that we, unlike the others on the mountain that night, stuck together and continued to function as a team, even when the conditions became dire. To this day, I remain deeply respectful and grateful to all of my teammates on that expedition. >>>

MFM: There are a lot of people that envy your ability to compete in the 60 and over category for the CrossFit Games. Where did your skills as a mountain climber help you to achieve that accomplishment and, for someone without your athletic background, do you think that others in that age bracket can join you in this achievement? SH: As I mentioned before, my strength and endurance were the skills from my adventuring years which have served me well in my personal challenge to qualify for the CrossFit Games. Possessing a high threshold for pain has certainly helped get through some long difficult gym sessions, too! ;) And yes, I think many others can (and should) get out there and train…for life. It is immensely rewarding to strive to live up to your genetic potential, no matter your age. And, as I have found, you can continue to improve your fitness and wellness regardless of age. MFM: For anyone looking to make qualifying in the CrossFit Games their goal, regardless of their age, what pearls of wisdom would you offer to them to help get them on the right track? SH: Make training a priority in your life and make your fitness practice routine. Don’t skip a day. Just show up. You will be surprised how, even on days when you are sore and tired, doing something physical will make you feel better. Follow a prescribed plan* of constantly varied functional fitness that trains these 10 fundamental physical qualities: Cardio/respiratory endurance, strength, stamina, power, flexibility, speed, agility, coordination, accuracy, and balance. This is CrossFit, but I have seen that programming emphasis can vary widely from affiliate to affilate, and gyms that are not CrossFit that have amazing programs, too. Join a gym that offers such a program staffed by knowledgeable and skilled coaches. (*It is important that your training program has a cyclical nature to it, and that your

coach (or the person who is programming it) takes a long view. It should be conceived within a 365 day timeframe, so, say in summer, you might focus on improving strength, in the fall on skills, in the winter on endurance, and in the spring on agility and coordination. Of course, it would be much more refined and varied than this example, but that is the general idea). Not only is the variety more interesting, it is how you get better at everything MFM: With your being an art history major and, just from what we’ve seen of your website, you have a deep passion for art. If you had to >>>


choose one piece to hang forever in a place of honor in your home, what would it be? SH: A large canvas painted by the American abstract artist Morris Louis. MFM: Have you ever considered, or decided about, what you want to do after you’ve completed your athletic careers in mountain climbing and in CrossFit? SH: I have no plans to stop climbing or training functional fitness. But after the CrossFit games are over, and I don’t need to train six days a week for the better part of every day, I will take my training back to “normal” levels and return to mountaineering. There are some unclimbed 6000 meter peaks in the Himalayas that interest me. I also want to get my helicopter pilot’s license recurrent so I can access some remote fly fishing streams. MFM: You’ve had an amazing career in the world of both television and literature, having several books listed on Amazon.com - “Mountain: Portraits of High Places” and “Fandango: Recipes, Parties, and License to Make Magic”, and appearing in Vogue, Allure, Men’s Journal, and Skiing, among other publications. What do you see yourself writing in the future, and will you ever be sharing your story about your struggles and accomplishments both in climbing and in CrossFit? SH: I will continue to write about my adventure travels as long as magazine editors are still interested in publishing them! As for writing about my CrossFit Games adventure, time will tell. But I am definitely interested in speaking publicly to people about it in the hope that I can inspire more people to discover the joys of living a physical life, at any age. MFM: You mention on your website that you like to surf, and that the locals consider

you both a “homie” and a “grommet”. Which beach has been your favorite surfing experience, and which beaches would you like to surf in the future? SH: My favorite break is “Old Man’s” in San Onofre, California. That wave is small and forgiving, and the ride is long. I started surfing at age 50, so I am not a very good surfer. But Laird Hamilton says that the best surfer is the one having the most fun. By that definition, I am the world’s greatest. MFM: When you are facing a major challenge or hurdle, what process or ritual do you do in order to prepare yourself to face, and overcome, that challenge? SH: I am best working in a total immersion. When I am on a project — writing a book, climbing a mountain, or planning a party — I do it at the exclusion of practically anything else and deliberately avoid distractions until I am finished. When facing a hurdle, I just explore all the options I have to work around it, and remain willing to alter my route toward achieving the result, but I do not lose sight of the goal. MFM: What failures have you had to overcome in your athletic career which helped you to reshape or better prepare yourself for future challenges? SH: I wish I had been born a decade later, after Title IX had been enacted. I would have had available to me such a wealth of athletic opportunities. But then, maybe because there were relatively few sport options available when I was a girl, I would never have found mountain climbing. In retrospect, I think I took to climbing because it was the only activity available to me. tea) routinely. Fortunately, once I leaned this (and about the relatively new scientific understanding of the relationship of gut bacteria to weight, mood, and brain function), it was really easy to restore the balance, by taking a broad spectrum probiotic. For three days, it felt like there was a little war going on inside my stomach. But the scuffle seems to have been resolved, and I have felt remarkably more energetic ever since. My test results also showed alarmingly high traces of metals. Again, surprising given my clean eating habits. But Chris Talley (the brains behind PFW) suspects that the high lead, cadmium, chromium, and aluminum he found come from the lip gloss products I use (and effectively eat) every day. Now I use Burt’s Bees Lip Balm (which does not contain metal), and eat a few sprigs of cilantro daily, said to help rid the body of these substances. Can you please mention the findings of that analysis, how they surprised you, and how those findings would probably be something that our readers could be experiencing right now without their knowledge? SH: The Precision FoodWorks analysis is highly individual, and the results relevant for only a brief period of time. (As soon as you change your diet in the slightest, the data will be obsolete.) It is probably the most detailed blood work available. The most astonishing thing I learned was regarding an imbalance of bad/good gut bacteria. I haven’t taken an antibiotic in forever, and I consume homemade (live culture) yogurt, fermented vegetables and kombucha (fermented

MFM: Regardless of the outcome of the CrossFit Games this July, where do you see yourself in regards to CrossFit next year? SH: I will practice functional fitness for the rest of my life. It is the only way to use and improve my physical fitness that makes sense to me. And I will wait until after the Games to decide if I would want to try and qualify again. MFM: Are there any major pieces of news, or up-coming surprises, that you could share with your fans regarding the future of Sandy Hill? SH: Remember, I mentioned total immersion: the Games, just two weeks from now, are really all I am thinking about now. But I am sure that within a few days after they are over, some other challenge will pique my interest, and I’ll be on my way toward another great adventure. >>>

MFM: We see some pretty amazing food recipes appear on your Facebook page. What is your best post training recipe that you would bet the farm on when it comes to muscle recovery? And if you have picture of it we’d love to use it. SH: My Seafood and Spaghetti Squash is the easiest thing in the world to make, and it is as good for recovery as it is satisfying to eat. Here is the recipe: Bake a spaghetti squash in the oven at 425 degrees for about an hour. While it is cooking, separately, prepare all of the seafood, saving the shellfish for last. I pan sear the cod in a pat of butter and tossed in some cherry tomatoes at the end, removing from heat when they burst. I grill the squid after tossing them in a little olive oil and salt. To make the broth, brown some chopped shallots in a little butter in your soup pan, and pour in 1/2 cup of white wine when they are just beginning to turn brown. Add about a cup of clam broth (I used an 8 oz. bottle of Bar Harbor brand), turn up the heat and when that is boiling, put in the shellfish (I used a pound of mussels), and put on the lid. Steam until the shells are open (about 90 seconds). Let cool just long enough so you can remove the shells, and put the meat back in the broth. When the spaghetti squash is finished cooking and cool enough to handle, scoop out (with a fork) about one cup of the strands and place them in the broth. Add the grilled squid (I cut mine into bitesized pieces after they were cooked). At this point, you can add some finely chopped herbs if you have them. Some days I use only parsley. Squeeze in the juice of 1/2 lemon. Sprinkle all this with salt, ground pepper and red pepper flakes (optional).

Place the piece of cod on top of all of this and pour in the tomatoes and any other cooking juices which remain in the sauté pan. With everything now in the one pan (the same one used to steam the mussels), put the lid back on and bring it all slowly back to a boil. If you think you want more liquid, add another cup/bottle of clam broth. This allows the flavors to meld at the same time as it brings all of the ingredients to the same temperature, but not long enough to cook them (much) more. And that’s it. Since I made just a single serving, it was really easy for me to pour/slide it all into a big soup bowl without breaking up the cod fillet. To make more servings, just multiply everything accordingly, and try to keep the one cup clumps of spaghetti squash distinct because once you start stirring up the squash, it can get broken and mushy fast.

MOST Fitness got the inside scoop on what Vlad Yudin has been up to recently and what it’s like being a film maker, producer, director, writer, and all that jazz. Growing up, Yudin never questioned his love for producing films, as it was always a passion of

the time to dwell into each story he produces and wants to connect to every person possible, whether it is his audience or his cast. Despite all the judgment society bases people on, there’s no better way to learn more about someone than to watch a documentary based on their life experiences. These allow people to get an inside feel of a particular person and Yudin believes that they particularly provoke the thrill of capturing a fresh perspective, as “there is something exciting about discovering a new story.” Of course, the audience enjoys these new discoveries just as much as he does. When beginning a new project, Yudin usually goes with a plan of what he wants to produce; however, there’s always a story behind every vision. With Generation Iron being Yudin’s most successful film,

the filmmaker was just as curious as his audience since bodybuilding is an uncommon sport. Yudin states that, “It always helps to be an outsider looking in. This way, you create an objective piece that both the bodybuilding world and the audience members can enjoy and appreciate”. Though Yudin does not use social media himself, he has done well at staying connected to his audiences. After the documentary Generation Iron soared, Yudin didn’t plan on expanding his supporters although when he saw the opportunity to build their continuous fan base once it was clearly presented. This went on into building an interactive website Generation Iron: Fitness Network that allows fitness individuals to share workouts, meal plans, and learn more from one another. The Vladar Company knew that,


“Bringing exciting, exclusive video content to the bodybuilding audience would be something [they] could provide and be successful at.” Clearly, it has been the right move as the company moves towards another bodybuilding film. With documentaries, everyone wonders which parts are honest and truthful and which parts were definitely scripted. We asked the filmmaker how he got the bodybuilding cast of Generation Iron to trust him and speak honestly on issues that most would not reveal. Clearly, spending a lot of time with the cast helps them become more open as they touch on more sensitive subjects brought up in the film such as steroid usage and more. However, the most important thing was that, “At the end of the day, the cast wanted to tell a story and were committed to being as honest as possible to make the best film”. It was their honesty that really brought out the film! Due to that, Yudin believes that Generation Iron’s

authenticity brought more confidence and help in building a better relationship with another bodybuilder in his next direction. So what is the next big move for Vlad Yudin? More bodybuilding! With the online world being easily accessible through all social mediums, it is uncommon to film about something that is not already out there. Feeling undefeated, Yudin catches people’s attention through niche topics that are always of interest as they are “usually the most captivating projects to work on and also targets an immediate supportive audience.” As fitness is the new black, so are the stories behind the individuals Yudin has worked on. Very much like capturing the life of CT Fletcher, who was a legend years ago that lost everything in a matter of days and went against what every doctor had told him, that he would never lift again. as much as folks did in the nineteenseventies. We asked Yudin why he thinks bodybuilding doesn’t seem as popular as it was back then and he responds with a truthful statement of bodybuilding being new and unknown back then. More so, “Bodybuilders were different kinds of humans to what the public was used to. Now that it is common to a more general audience, it has maybe lessened in popularity. But if you go to any fitness expo and see the three-hour wait lines some bodybuilder icons like CT Fletcher have… it is very hard to argue it has lost its popularity.” As the popularity demand was high during Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Pumping Iron days, Yudin wasn’t scared to tell a story in a different light in a new age. He still very much believes in its highlights and doesn’t think that it has died out.

Vlad Yudin’s creations never drop as he constantly is simultaneously working on new projects that keep his creative juices going. With the criticism he may get, he believes that, “Some films may be more successful than others commercially, but it’s always important to believe in your vision and stand by your projects when are being criticized or when they are being praised”. Winning gold in 2012 was a surreal experience for Richards-Ross. “I wanted it for so long, put in so many hours, and gone through so many ups and downs. It was gratifying to know that when you work hard and stay persistent, your dreams really can come true.” Years of training and preparation boiled down to a race counted in seconds. “For the forty-nine seconds it took to run the race, it took me almost an hour to complete my victory lap. I had family, friends, neighbors, and loved ones who wanted to celebrate in my victory.” Richards-Ross conveys that the experience was so special because she was able to share it with her family. Not only has Sanya participated in the 400m, but she has competed in the 4x400 relay for the past three consecutive Olympics. Sanya explains that, “You are strong on your own, but you are so much stronger when you step out with your teammates.” Track and Field can be a selfish sport, where you are constantly working for yourself and thinking about the individual gold. However, being on a relay team has given Sanya the amazing opportunity to team up with three other amazing women who are just like her, focused, determined, and very talented at what they do. For Sanya, being a part of the 4x400 team has built her confidence and allowed her to see that competing is about much more than herself. Sanya explains, “As much as I want to win, I want to see my teammates do well, and it is about that medal count for Team USA.” She says there is a type of team camaraderie across the board as the swimmers and gymnasts will cheer for the track athletes as they all try to work bring home the most hardware for Team USA. >>>

Two hours in the gym, two hours on the track, and one hour of core training broken up by meals, sleep, and ice baths; it is clear that being a track star is a full time job. With the constant practice and commitment required from a professional athlete, Sanya is inspired to push herself to such an extreme through her strong faith and selfdetermination. “I am a religious person, and I believe that God gave me this great gift. When I use this gift to run I am glorifying God, so on some levels running is very spiritual.” Additionally Sanya is extremely competitive and self-motivated. “I want to be my best; I want to see how far I can take it. I want to find out what my body is capable of, and if I do all the right things can I continue to be the best?” Nike has sponsored Richards-Ross for the past thirteen years. She has participated in numerous campaigns and photoshoots, but she explains how what Nike does behind the scenes is even more special than most people realize. With her two toe surgeries, Nike has been there to advance their technology in order to change her spikes and put Richards-Ross with great people for recovery. “They are a company that wants to see you do well and are constantly improving their products to help us be great.” Nike listens to their athletes in order to better their products. “I can make a suggestion and in the final development I can see they listened to what I said and made changes based on my recommendations.” Having watched Sanya’s races or having seen her in photos, it is clear that part of her regular running attire includes compression

sleeves. Sanya was warm and truthful in her explanation of how she came to wear them. “In 2007 I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that gave me skin lesions all over my body and arms. True to form Nike wanted to do something to make me feel more comfortable and confident on the track. I started wearing the sleeves to cover my scars because I did not want others to know what I was going through, but then they became part of my uniform to make me feel confident. It started out as appearance, but now they have become part of who I am on the track.” Sanya was diagnosed with this autoimmune disease prior to the 2012 Olympics and now has to


overcome toe surgery in preparation for 2016. Although these have been tough to overcome, Sanya vowed that those experiences have only made her stronger and better able to appreciate her opportunities. She explains, “This is just part of the journey toward success, I do not feel that any one moment defines success. Part of becoming a better athlete is overcoming failure; I still cry and feel disappointed, but I try not to be there for long. I never feel that when I am knocked down I am knocked out, I am down for a time, and I am going to come back better than ever. I have strong faith and know that everything happens for a reason.” At the age of twelve, Sanya migrated from Jamaica to the

United States. With the education that Sanya received in Jamaica, she and her sister were able to test into their respective grades in America’s education system. Eight years ago when Sanya heard that the literacy in Jamaica was not rising, she was especially concerned that others kids were not getting the same great start that she received. “It broke my heart because I had access to school supplies and great teachers, and I wanted other kids to have the same access. I know education is fundamental to growth and success.” This concern spurred a partnership with Fun4Kidz to found the Sanya Richards Fast Track Program, which strives to combine sports with literacy in Jamaica. The goal of the program is to improve testing skills, promote a healthy lifestyle, and enhance social skills so that kids from Sanya’s home country can have the same potential to achieve their dreams. Seven years have passed since the beginning of the program, thus kids who started the program are now graduating and coming back to share their success stories. The program continues to expand, reaching and helping more children, since partnering with United States Agency for International Development, who donated more than $100,000 to the cause. anya was born in Jamaica where soccer and track and field are the two biggest sports. Sanya began running at the age of seven and admitted that she was already beating the boys and the girls. Since those early years, Sanya has dreamt of becoming an Olympic champion. “I remember as a young girl when the Olympics were happening the entire city would shut down and everyone would go to the city center to cheer on the Olympians. I thought I want that to be me one day.” Sanya’s father, Archie kept this dream alive by saying when Sanya was just nine years old that she was going to the Olympics. like a reality.” All those factors made her think that if she continued to work hard her dreams would become a reality. ith the significant role that running had in Sanya’s life since starting at seven years old, she hopes to give advice to children with athletic dreams and to the parents who support them. “If it’s something that you are passionate about, be persistent, work hard, believe in yourself and if you work long enough it will happen for you.” To the parents, “Follow the pace of your child, it is important the child reaches their potential at their pace.” As kids are striving to achieve more and more, Sanya believes that everyone should have an off-season. Whether that be four, six, or eight weeks your body needs to rest and recover, your body will break down if you peak all that time. Sanya herself takes six weeks off where she does not do anything sports related, she does not run, walk, or lift a single weight. Last year she started the Sanya RichardsRoss Clinic to educate, empower, and provide youth with some tools and strategies to excel both on and off the track. Sanya hopes that runners, parents, and coaches will realize that it does not take just one person to achieve success but rather a team. Sanya’s parents and coaches attend the clinic to convey to attendees how they have assisted Sanya in her success. She believes she has been tremendously blessed and hopes the clinic provides others with the tools to avoid the mistakes she has made. The clinic has been hosted twice since starting last year. Both events were extremely successful, and Sanya hopes to continue these clinics all over the country and even all over the world. It is clear that Sanya is not afraid to have it all as she starred in the reality show Sanya’s Glam & Gold. Some people may be apprehensive about allowing the public into the personal aspects of their lives, but Sanya had no such reservations. >>>

Although the camera crews in her garage five days a week made shooting a full-time job, Sanya loved the experience. Even though the show only had one season, Sanya wished it were able to have another season as it would have been great to see her life as she prepared for the 2016 Olympics. But, Sanya’s endeavors do not stop there explaining how she has always wanted to be an entrepreneur and has started a hair extension line and opened a salon with her sister, Shari. Sanya relishes in her love for beauty, admitting that having a sister as a stylist and her own hair extension line is a “plus plus.” Starting these ventures has allowed Sanya to figure out how to grow a business. Although Sanya and Shari are polar opposites, where Sanya dreams big, and Shari is slow and steady, it has allowed Sanya to learn patience, be more strategic, and appreciate a little growth. rom races in the heart of Beijing, China, to the flat valleys of Eugene, Oregon it is safe to say Sanya travels all over the world to compete. Sanya is able to rattle off a few of her favorite travel destinations which include Berlin, Rome, Paris, Zürich, and Eugene. She is often not able to experience the city as much as she would like because the athletes have to stick to their schedule. Sanya hopes to do more races in other parts of the world because she may stop competing after next year. Although Sanya loves traveling the world and experiencing different cultures, she wishes that Americans were able to see track and field athletes compete more often. As it turns out most of the races that are in the USA occur in the early season, where the athletes are not as fast, and the races are not as competitive. With discussions of Sanya’s Fast Track Program, SRR Clinic, hair extension line and salon, and competitions all around the world, MOST asked Sanya how she keeps it all together. Laughing in response to this question and

acknowledging that she is involved in a multitude of activities, she admits that it is not easy. “Some days when I am the best on the track I may not be the best wife or business partner, but I always try to remember my priorities.” Sanya considers herself lucky to have a family that supports her and a husband who understands the pressures of professional athleticism. Although Sanya involves herself in many activities, she believes that those other passions help her stay calm and fulfilled. “I am not the athlete that can just sleep and train all the time, I think I would go crazy.” When she does manage to get away from the hustle and bustle of her career, Sanya enjoys being at home and spending time with her husband. In 2010, Sanya married her college sweetheart, Aaron Ross. As a professional football player for the Baltimore Ravens, Sanya is grateful to have a husband that understands what she is going through. Aaron often says to her, “We love you not because of the outcome of the races but because of who you are.” Sanya is not shy in stating that they have a magical relationship because they are often apart due to traveling when they are together they maximize their time and do not fight much. After participating in the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Olympics, it is safe to say that Richards-Ross is a veteran to the games. She has been able to take lessons out of past Olympics that will aid her in preparing for 2016. The most important part is to not think about the importance of the games. She advises others, “Yes there are ninety-thousand people in the stands and even more back at home, but try to minimize those things and be in the moment.” In 2008, Richards-Ross was favored to win gold in the 400m and ended up receiving bronze. She says that because she was under a lot of pressure it made the task even more daunting. Therefore in 2012 Richards-Ross enjoyed the experience, had fun, spent more time with her family, and watched other competitions. >>>

y the end of the 2015 year, Sanya will have finished the World Championships in Beijing and a few races in Europe. For Sanya, this has been a year of learning and readjusting. Although this will be the first year not competing in the 400m in the World Championships, she will compete in the 4x400 relay. Richards-Ross currently holds the third-fastest time in the world and hopes to end the season with the fastest time in the world as she goes into the year of the Olympics. She admits that her training techniques do not change that much as she is preparing for the Olympics, but what changes is the intensity that the athlete brings to

running every race. As Sanya puts it, “In Olympic years you find so much more of yourself to give.” Sanya is excited to defend the title she gained in 2012 as the fastest in the world at the 2016 Olympics. However, only one woman in history has managed the near impossible feat of winning backto-back gold medals in the 400m. Her name is Marie-Jose Perec of France, a woman who Sanya has respected and admired her entire career. “To be in this position to do something that Marie did is amazing for me.” To do her best in 2016, Sanya is preparing by running excellent races and gaining confidence. Sanya explains, “When you have that confidence you can execute a perfect race. In my

best races for the last 100-meters, I feel like I have a lot left in the tank which allows me to attack and sprint home.” Sanya pointed out that most athletes run their fastest time in the 400m when they are thirty or thirty-one years old, as she will be thirtyone next year and feels mentally and physically ready to run very well. Concluding the interview, Sanya conveys that she is simply a woman who loves life, people, and hopes to share her experiences on and off the track with others. MFM: What part of your training do you have the most difficulty with, and how do you address those difficulties? AD: I naturally am a very petite woman so I have always had a difficult time putting on and maintaining lean muscle mass. Gaining muscle is a science and it has a lot to do with your nutrition! I have gone through periods of muscle gain and muscle loss but I know there is one thing I love that we all have if you’ve trained heavy in your life and that is something I like to call ‘muscle memory’; it’s a beautiful thing! The key points I tell everyone about overcoming challenges with your fitness/ nutrition is to keep going! It took me many years to figure out my own physique and what works best for me. In the past decade I have done a lot in my life including putting myself through dental hygiene school, raising my daughter alone and working an extremely busy schedule as a professional sales representative. I’m not always perfectly lean because I’m human like you, but being consistent with your goals and keep pushing harder towards your goals, they will come. I also believe education is so important! I became obsessive with nutritional and exercise science so I could teach myself what I needed to know in order to gain and preserve muscle. With access to the web now days, we can find an enormous amount of information online so there really is no excuse to be uneducated. If it’s important enough to someone to overcome those training difficulties then they will do what it takes to increase their knowledge base in that specific area of their life. Educate, implement, analyze and repeat. MFM: We noticed that you constantly use the hash-tag #BehindTheMuscle in your posts and/ or photos. What is the story behind how and why you started using it? AD: I work with many sports nutrition companies in promoting their brand of products. I only put my name behind something I actually use. #Behindthemuscle was a social media campaign

for Isopure I was promoting. A very clean protein powder I personally use. MFM: Who are your favorite male and female competitors in the industry, and why? AD: Great question! The industry has changed a ton since I first came on the scene. I’ve always loved not only the perfecting of the physique I also love true athletes. Fitness division has always been one of my favorites to watch and gives me inspiration. These women don’t just have great physiques but they can do some amazing things in these routines. Oksana Grishina is hands down not only an athlete but also a performer. The moment she steps on stage your attention is captured. Moreover, I have been a huge fan of bodybuilding since I was young. I always thought it was amazing to fine tune every single muscle in your body and find symmetry and balance. It’s something that shows your inner strength because no one can do this for you, you can’t buy it, you have to work hard day in and day out to achieve your goals. This is what I love about bodybuilding. A few more inspiring competitors in the industry include of course Arnold and Frank Zane. MFM: As a fitness competitor, who is also a parent, how has what you’ve learned in the industry impacted your decisions when it comes to buying AD: I think when my daughter was younger it was always important for me to be a good influence and cook most our meals at home. I always found a balance between letting my daughter be a kid and not allow her to have some things every kid should have like a delicious ice cream cone on a summer day or slice of cheesy pizza. I tried to make sure my daughter knew I was dieting for competitions but it was more for me to challenge my goals and achieve the things I want to. Dieting and training for competitions especially the diet aspect is not healthy no matter what people tell you but that’s just the thing we do for results. healthy diet, but of course I give in to craving here and there. I am naturally blessed to have a fast metabolism and don’t have to worry about dieting to maintain a lean physique. I now just try to stay within 2 weeks of being shoot shape ready. MFM: For Moms and Dads out there, what’s the biggest piece of advice you would give them when it comes to the health and fitness of their children? AD: I would say try to make sure what you’re eating is healthy so they see it from you. Also make snacks at home such as healthy granola bars and smoothies. There are so many amazing recipes you can find online that are kid friendly and you’ll love them yourself. I also find it saves money on groceries and food. Check out some of my recipes on my website: www.amberdayfitness.com MFM: When it comes to your own performance in the gym, which exercises or aspects of your training do you blow away the competition at? AD: I feel like we all have our strengths and weaknesses. Training is a game of mental strength and with the right amount of focus, persistence and consistency anyone can achieve their goals. With that said, I don’t believe that a specific exercise or aspect blows anyone away. I do however believe one thing that has helped me stand out from the rest and given me the ability to perform to a point I never thought I could, has been my mind! When it comes to training it takes time, a lot of time. It won’t happen in a day, a week, a month or even a year. It takes years to develop a training and nutrition protocol that works for your body. It’s a trial and error type thing, find what works for you, change it up and stick to it. I’m now 32 and think I finally found exactly what works for me just about 4 years ago. I have learned to work through the pain and push myself to a level of discomfort, because it’s at those points when our bodies change the most. If something doesn’t work I don’t quit I change it and move on. I’m also always open for advice and change even after years and years of training. I

find that some competitors believe they already know everything, but I value advice from others and whether I like it or not I’m an open ear and this allows me to be diverse with my training. MFM: If you could be a super-hero, who would you be and why? AD: The hulk! Well is the Hulk a superhero? Either way he was the first one that came to my head. Guess you could say I’m kind of a meathead ☺ MFM: Which time of the day do you prefer to train, and why? AD: I train when I can squeeze it into my schedule but generally I prefer those afternoon workouts to give me a little burst of energy. I’m not a huge morning person so early morning workouts never are as great as afternoon so I stick with those. However, if I’m trying to lean out I always get at least 20min cardio first thing in the morning. MFM: If you could map out your career over the next ten years, what would you like to do that might surprise your fans and colleagues? AD: There are many things I do that don’t specifically involve the fitness industry. I’m a dental hygienist and currently work with software technologies that change the scope of patient relationship management and work with physicians of all kinds to help grow their practice. I have also been blessed to get engaged and start a company with my fiancé so there are many things I plan to do not involving the fitness industry. I think sometimes when fans hear what I do for my career they are surprised. My life isn’t 100% fitness! I have many career goals such as working with public health programs to improve oral health of children with lower income brackets. I also am a wanderlust and love nature and would love to get involved with a non-profit to preserve protected lands in Colorado. >>>

MFM: If you could change or improve one thing about your body, what would it be? AD: I bet the typical answer for this is “I wouldn’t change a thing”. I’m not one of those as we are all-human and have something we would love to change. Mine would definitely be the ability to gain muscle much easier. It’s always a battle for me to consume the amount of calories and macros I need to in order to put muscle on. I immediately see my muscle dissipate if I’m not constantly training heavy and making sure my protein intake is high. I hear from women all the time I’m lucky because have a fast metabolism but remember it’s just as hard to lose weight as it is to put on lean muscle mass. It’s a constant battle for me to hang on to hard earned muscle. MFM: If you’re traveling, or don’t have access to adequate gym facilities that you’re used to, how do you compensate with your training? AD: This is what I excel at, finding a way to get in a quick workout with or without a gym. One thing that is great is we always have our own body weight to work with and regardless of whether I’m in a hotel room or at home I can effective get my heart rate going and muscles burning from basic exercise circuits that can be done without any equipment. Push-ups, body squats, hip trusts, lunges and so much more can be done right in a hotel room. I will challenge myself and do something like 5 sets of 30 each exercise with only a 60 seconds rest in between. It only takes a 20-30 minute workout and I’m toast. No excuses! If you don’t make it a priority then it won’t get done. I find if you pencil it into your schedule like an appointment you’ll be more likely to actually get it done. MFM: If you could change one thing about the fitness industry, what would it be? AD: The industry has changed so much since I first stepped on the scene. I would change some of the perception it represents on social media. It has become a more sexualized sport, especially with the woman! I want to inspire young girls to

stay fit and be healthy and not worry about what others think but being the mother of a 13 year old it’s embarrassing to see women in fitness exposing basically everything via social media to get validation and approval. This isn’t porn it’s fitness and we are setting the future up for our children to view this in a totally different light than when I first started. MFM: What are your favorite leisure activities to do which also help you relax and de-stress the most? AD: Hiking and bouldering are my favorite things

to do to unwind and it’s a stellar workout! I’m wanderlust at heart and feel that I’m where I belong deep in the Colorado Mountains (home of my wedding next year ☺). I was fortunate to have grown up in such a wonderful place that I could explore some amazing things like the San Juan Mountains, Canyon lands, Zion, Indian ruins and so much more. Not only is it history but also I was in the best shape of my life doing everything outdoors. It’s peaceful, beautiful and therapeutic. Another activity I love nothing more than my evening bike rides with my daughter to chat about her day and be a mom. MFM: What fitness related memory always puts a smile on your face? AD: There are so many memories it’s hard to pick just one. I’ve met some amazing people that will become lifelong friends; I’ve achieved many goals and have experienced so many events. The thing that stands out most is winning the Hard Rock

cover model. It was a little surreal seeing myself on billboards throughout my home state of New Mexico. I also have had many years to work with some great sports nutrition companies and travel all over. To me the industry has brought many things to my life I wouldn’t have experienced otherwise. It’s taught me a lot about myself and left me with handfuls of memories I wouldn’t change for a thing. Amber has not only found balance in her life, but happiness. owever, life was not all fun and games for Justine Moore. As she prepped for a competition in the spring of 2014, Justine went through adrenal fatigue and it wasn’t until later that she had realized the damage was already done. For those that aren’t familiar, she explains it as, “very ‘clouded’ thinking in the morning combined with debilitating fatigue striking in the early afternoon and lasts until the evening.” The evening was the only time she felt somewhat like herself and could think clearly. She first realized all of this when her midsection wouldn’t lose fat quickly, as it normally does, and struggling to find a quick solution, it only got worse. Her cortisol (our bodies’ “stress hormones” that causes us to gain and store fat specifically in the midsection) levels sky-rocketed along with getting shingles for the third time, causing her to finally visit the doctor. She had learned that her thyroid had shut down as well as other levels in her body were off, requiring her to take a step back from competing and most importantly, training. Not only did she lack the energy but also her body just wasn’t able to recover from hard workouts. During that six-month timespan, she still remained fit by doing cardio, light lifting, or yoga two times a week, versus normally training two times a day. Huge step back! What is fascinating is that Justine competes and also goes through anxiety, yet she says, surprisingly, her anxiety never kicked in while she was on stage. However, she does believe that, “The mind is a powerful thing and it’s so important to be aware of our thoughts and inner dialogue, and make sure it stays positive and aligned with our true selves.” We couldn’t agree more. Along with her competitive nature, she is extremely hard on herself but states that this characteristic is what drives her, as it is both a weakness and an asset. she hadn’t been somewhat forced into doing so. However, taking a step back, she had realized how miserable she was trying to hit bonuses and putting such immense pressure on herself, “The placing in competitions is SO subjective, and was out of [her] control.” Justine exceeded her own expectations in competing and experienced an array of things, her primary goal wasn’t to be the best but was to inspire her clients and become, as she said, her own “walking billboard”. Nonetheless, you won’t be seeing her compete back on stage as she intends on focusing on the new business ventures she has going on, finally building that empire she’s been dreaming of. ince then, Justine has learned more about herself than she ever has. When she lived in New York, Justine told MOST Fitness that she “didn’t have a very strong support system, and it just never felt like home” to her, so moving back to Wisconsin where her family lives, was the right move. Of course, it was no coincidence that her adrenal fatigue symptoms rapidly improved once she moved home. “It felt like a veil had been lifted from my eyes, and finally I felt whole again. Back in the Midwest, I feel like I am in my element, and spending time with my family every week is priceless.” As she spends more time with her family and publishing her first eBook, JustineFit Recipe, co-written by her mom, Justine isn’t the only one benefitting from her move back home. Not only does her mom help with the recipes, but Justine also returns the favor by training both her parents in the gym now. Writing has been very therapeutic for her and she’s extremely proud of the final product. Over the next year, she plans to be more actively blogging and wants to publish another eBook.

But, what does Justine Moore do outside of her titles? She even admits to putting aside all her hobbies and entire social life for years while she was on the competing circuit. Justine considers herself a workaholic, but loves spending time with family and friends and just going out to dinner and enjoying some nice wine or craft beer – “I didn’t have the opportunity to eat out or drink for most of my twenties, so I really appreciate it now.” Of course, she also enjoys traveling, reading, going to concerts, and cooking. She doesn’t only focus on her career! MOST Fitness gets to know more of Justine and she’s not just a Midwest girl or suburban girl, but a bit of both and all that’s in-between. Justine shares even more with us as we asked for an easy recipe trick anyone could easily implement into his or her life. “I never use regular salad dressing. At home I mix up my own, combining vinegar with stevia, Dijon mustard and a little Greek yogurt.” Mm, sounds tasty! Natural and not over-doing your body! owever, what about the women that want to lift but think that they’ll get bulky from doing it? Justine laughs, as she believes this is a myth since she’s been lifting for seven years and is far from bulky. Nonetheless, she left 5 tips for women who want a toned body (without getting “bulky”):

Don’t skip muscle groups because you think you don’t want to focus on them. It is so important to develop a balanced, symmetrical body. I am a huge fan of

supersets, circuits, and interval training to keep your heart rate up during strength training for maximum fat burning AND muscle building.

3. Learn proper form and technique. Two exercises this is especially crucial for are squats and dead lifts-perfect these moves you’ll be on your way to a killer body!

Eat wholesome, nutritious foods to fuel your body properly. Also the only way to REALLY get “bulky” is from taking in too many calories... So keep your nutrient intake in check, according to progress and goals! Foam rolling, stretching and

yoga are great to create long, lean muscles and also to prevent injury. Among all of the health and fitness, we can’t forget about sleep and how important it is to stay well rested. Justine heavily believes in this as well and says she’s one of those people that desperately needs her sleep! “I’m very susceptible to getting sick, and I lack the energy to be as productive as I can, so I’m very good about making [sleep] a priority.” Give this lady seven hours and she’s good to go, however, anything under that is a different story! This wonder woman can’t seem to do more, think again. Just recently, she was honored to be a nationally qualified National Physique Committee Judge; something she’d never expect would happen so soon! “Life works in mysterious ways, and I believe everything happens for a reason, so it was such a rewarding experience for me to see my competing career

As if running a fitness network with daily workouts and dietary plans was not enough, Aliotti also has young children (who can occasionally be seen used as spare weights or as the cheer squad in the back of her daily videos). “Being a mom has forced me to be more flexible with my style of working out. It has been such a blessing in disguise because I have really learned how to tailor my workouts around my busy schedule and mommy duties,” Gina tells MOST. Growing up in a health-centric household, Gina believes her parents laid the foundation for her habits and career pathway. “In my life today I try to be that same example for my kids. Hopefully a little will rub off on them and they will lead healthy and happy lives.” I also wanted to hear that, “Everyone is allowed a day off” to validate my own frequent skip days. I was sadly disappointed. Gina Aliotti truly is as thorough in her own regimen as she encourages her clients to be in theirs. No day is a cheat day. The words Aliotti lives by are “Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out,” from author Robert Collier. Gina Aliotti is the founder of Gina Aliotti Fitness Network, an online-based plan that allows clients worldwide to reach their fitness goals gym-membershipfree. “I’ve had clients with many different fitness goals. These include those who want to shed a few unwanted pounds, have hormonal issues (menopause, trying to get pregnant, postpartum), pregnancy nutrition, medical issues (aiming to get off medicine), and some who just want to learn to eat healthier,” she says. With clients’ locations widely varying, Gina has also created a Facebook group to act as a support system for her clients to share successes and struggles alike.

So who is Gina Aliotti off-camera? “I am a girl who appreciates one who stands behind their promises,” she says on her biggest pet peeve. While she grew up Christian, Gina describes her faith as a belief in a higher power and that all things happen for a reason. “I try to follow the ‘Golden Rule’ in helping others as much as possible and doing things out of integrity. When I’m able to combine right intention with my passion, things seem to lead me in the right direction.” Gina’s ideal “lazy Sunday” is spent on the beach, playing with the kids and barbecuing with friends and family. So for those of us whose current idea of a tough workout is an elliptical attached to a small television with the Kardashians coaching us through a thirty-minute light jog, Gina has some first step advice (this is, after all, still swim season). To start, she recommends Lululemon Athletica for athletic wear and Aggie Garcia for swimwear. Now that you look workout-ready, Omi’s latest hit “Cheerleader” should get you ready to go “The


remix gets me pumped up every time I hear it,” she says. Finally, remember “Patience! Everyone was a beginner at one time in their life. Rather than looking at how far you have to go and be intimidated by the process, enjoy the journey and be patient! Everyone wants to reach their goals yesterday but remember, it takes time. Anything in life that is incredible takes time.” Even fitness experts like Gina struggle through a few workouts. She admits, “Burpees! Who loves those incredible full body killer exercises? I have a love-hate relationship with them!” So what do we have to look forward to in the next five years from Ms. Aliotti and the G-Fit team? “I’m really shifting much of my focus on my teams nutrition product line, Devotion Nutrition and my members section of my website. Gary’s NPC career began in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area but quickly spread throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and now encompasses 7 states on the East Coast. These successes were launched by Gary’s attention to detail and his close relationship with Jim Manion, Chairman of the IFBB Professional League. Jim Manion was Gary’s mentor and “taught him literally everything”. In Gary’s own words, “Jim is more like family at this point”. I recently had an opportunity to interview Gary and his love of this sport was apparent. He truly cares about the sport and the athletes that participate. As he put it, “the athletes come first and without them we have nothing”. Gary became involved with the NPC as a natural progression from high school athlete looking for a new endeavor and this interest led to competing in the NPC body building competitions. As his career progressed, he emerged from a competitor

Gary defines his position as head judge as “stage management”. It is his job to ensure the program moves along smoothly. He directs the athletes in placement, pose and overall “stage management”. In his own words,“Nothing will happen on the stage if the head judge doesn’t make it happen because you can’t leave the athletes to their own devices. They are there to perform at your direction. So if you would like them to turn a certain way, you need to tell them. If you need to create great photos, you need to make sure the athletes are centered


on stage in the right poses, at the right time. It’s basically stage management. You take full control of the operation.“

Jim Manion started to add things. First there was fitness, then there was figure, then it was bikini and now the addition of physique competitions.”

As head judge, Gary is looking for a nice balanced looking physique, sort of “GQ look with a bit of muscle” to be exact. He precedes,“the men’s division has become incredibly competitive and we’ve done a great job of keeping it from turning into another bodybuilding contest. If folks get too big, they get marked down accordingly. The main thing is presentation. When you have 10 guys pop on the stage in great shape, they all look the same. It is the presentation that sets them apart.”

According to Gary, Jim Manion first instituted the figure division, the next progression in devising a division for every body type. This division completed the gap for women you had sustained injury or were feeling the limitations of age. They could no longer perform the grueling routines but harbored the desire to compete. Figure was fitness without the routine. Apparently Jim did not stop there. He had the desire to create a division to promote less muscle and more figure but in a cool, sexy sassy way. Thus, the bikini division was created.

When asked how the sport of bodybuilding had changed, Gary replied, “The sport has exploded from the days of doing our contests. We were literally in gymnasiums with a single light hanging off a basketball hoop and that was strictly bodybuilding. We only had men’s bodybuilding back then. There was no music during the posing routines so you had to bring a lot of your friends with you to the finals.“ He continued,“The routines were 90 seconds, but you didn’t have music so if you didn’t have a lot of friends there it was a long 90 seconds. Then obviously, slowly but surely,

He is the owner of GMU Productions and other endeavors that are not affiliated with the sport of bodybuilding. He strives to keep everything in a balance. Gary’s renowned clinics have produced many athletes ready for the stage. Gary reports he has witnessed a difference in those athletes attending his clinics. They perform

better on stage and present better poses. Some athletes make the mistake of having a friend teach them stage presence and poses. He feels this is unfortunate and a major disservice to this athlete as their friend really doesn’t know how they should look. As Gary points out, “We’ve got Charles Dorsey, Teresa Anthony, Peter Gordon, Todd Howell, all accomplished people who were either terrific athletes at one time, judges or trainers. So they can give them every bit of details on how to present themselves better.” I asked Gary his thoughts on the declining interest in women’s bodybuilding and fitness divisions. He explained, “Genetically it is difficult for a woman to build that kind of muscle that’s necessary for bodybuilding. It’s very hard to do. So because of that, they have gone into the figure division in most cases. I think we lost a lot of bodybuilding women to figure. The ones that simply could not put on that

kind of muscle mass or chose not to. “Similarly, Gary attributes the decline in the fitness division to some of the same reasoning. When Gary has some spare time, he enjoys spending it with his Grandson and hot rod cars. He has a passion for old classic cars and owns a 1964 Coup DeVille and a 1960 Corvette. He assured me there would be more cars to come in the future. Gary does not see himself returning to the performance stage but often revels in those thoughts when judging contests. He misses the fun that comes with training for this type of event and performing on stage. He now substitutes these feelings with the excitement he receives from teaching others how to compete. Summed up with his closing statement, “I really love my work. I love dreaming up new events.“ And he is.

Five acts of fitness kindness that will make a difference

By: Jessica Jessie, MCPT fter finishing my last crunch I began to wonder why I had pushed myself harder than ever before during an extraordinary killer workout. Then it came to me. My friend Chris, who owns a chain of Pacers running stores in DC, Maryland, Virginia and New Jersey, had just sent me a new pair of kicks. I was so touched by this gesture that I had to get my grind on in the gym. And when I got there I had a little more spring in my step. Feeling so blessed to have received a free pair of shoes from my friend, I realized that giving back can often feel just as good as receiving. Soon I went through my shoes – some of which I had barely worn – and I decided to send them to the local Boys & Girls Club. My hope was that they might feel as inspired as I did with my new shoes. Being the beneficiary of a random act of kindness is great, but giving back truly feels amazing. With this in mind, I challenge all of you to try and slide in at least one of these five little acts of fitness kindness into your gym routine and we can build a better and fitter world!

Did you know the hardest thing to do during your workout happens before the workout even starts? That’s right, just getting there is often half the battle. So how about starting someone’s fitness journey in the right direction by opening the door for them and greeting them with a “have a great workout today.” Some affirmation can go a long way and might even help the person you greet get that one last rep.

Don’t be selfish. When that heavy breather stands behind you in line at the water fountain, give them the right of way. They probably need it more than you. Don’t make someone ask. If you see someone struggling to

find a spot in your Zumba class or you see them looking for an extra bench, offer to make room or share. Most people have gymtimidation so make their lives easier and alleviate their anxiety. A good rule of thumb is to check the mirror. Never block anybody from seeing themselves. Whether it’s during a class or in the weight room, if the space is tight, move your tail so everybody can enjoy the gym equally. When the U.S. Women’s Soccer team won the World Cup just a few weeks ago I found myself getting chills. After every goal I got even more emotional watching them celebrate with a classic high five! And then it hit me. That simple gesture makes you feel so damn good. A high five conveys support, belief and even pure joy. So next time you see someone at the gym working hard I challenge you to throw up your hand for a quick high five. No words are necessary. >>>

This 5K and 100-yard Kids Dash is more than a (gorgeous) run along Washington, DC’s Freedom Plaza to kick off your Saturday morning. It supports essential services for children in the District of Columbia and far beyond. Averaging over 450,000 patient visits, 18,000 surgeries, $82 million in uncompensated care, and $115 million in community benefits like wellness programs, Children’s National provides lifesaving care to children near and far. For me, the race is even more personal. October 3 is the day before the one-year anniversary since my son Moses passed away at just 19 days old. When your child passes away, it can feel like your hope for the future passes on with him. But this race has given me a renewed purpose. My race team “Remembering Moses” is raising

the seed money for the Moses Warren McCord Memorial Fund, which will benefit Children’s National Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and support acute care, palliative care, and research. My husband William and I often say that if we help just one more family bring their baby home, that’s everything. And it is. But we’d like to help even more families, and we hope you’ll help us.
