Q&A You were born in Havana, Cuba. How has Cuban fashion changed in your lifetime? Cuban fashion has changed drastically and fortunate enough the people living in Cuba are exposed to current fashion statements showcased by travelers from Europe and the rest of the world. It remains an exotic destination which attracts the elite with great taste in fashion. Over my lifetime the economy of the country has impacted the access to fashion and style.
How much influence did/does your family had/have in your success as a designer?
My family has always had influence on my career and will always be a part of who I am. From an early stage in life, my parents instilled a laborious work ethic; and until this day my family as well as my friends, whom I’d consider my chosen family, continue to influence my success as a fashion designer. Have you gone back to Cuba since you left, what do you miss from your native country?
I have not returned to Cuba since I left. It is a difficult subject because it is my birth country and I remained there throughout my early adulthood, I miss my native country

dearly. I’m also thankful for the transition my adoptive country, the United States of America, has facilitated. I’ve been able to thrive and been given the opportunity to live my “American Dream”.
What is the balance of business skills to technical (designer) skills in being a successful fashion designer? In order to be a successful fashion designer, technical skills and business skills must be balanced. At times the technical portions must trump business skills, and there are times where business skills must take over. It is a juggling act.
How would you describe your personal style and has it changed over the last 10 years? My personal style in design is quite eclectic but a fundamental I keep at the core of my design is to translate trends into timeless style in accordance to the person wearing the piece. So, the garment and the recipient are in harmony. I’m open to new technology and mediums and bringing those to my style. My clients like the versatility which I exposed them to when they invest in one of my pieces. I push their limits and my limits in every creation. Over the last decade materials and trends have changed, yet my style remains, to meet my upmost desire, which is to embellish those whom entrust me with their fashion. Do you design for a particular body type or a woman in mind?
My designs encompass the full spectrum of body types and women from all walks of life. I welcome the challenge. I often think my work is cut-out for me, most of my clients bring those challenges but I focus on each woman’s enchanting features. By focusing on my clients’ most beautiful features, I’m able to produce pieces I’m proud to stamp my label on. What are the new innovations in textiles and are you using any trend setting materials?
In textiles, manufacturers are fusing stretch materials with traditionally rich silks and textiles. These innovative creations bring the solutions needed for design and endless body types which present complexities. From

a manufacturing standpoint, creations in the blends of raw materials are producing more vibrant metallic textiles, three-dimensional illusions, and over all fabrics that, to the naked eye, have a tremendous “WOWFactor”. In technology — laser cutting — has been revolutionary in the precision which allows creativity to come to life like never before. Do you ever have “designer-block”? If so how do you open your mind for new ideas?
I believe every creative person experiences a creativity road block. The best way I deal with these interruptions is to set the project aside for as long as allotted and resume when fresh ideas come to mind.

FASHION M A G A Z I N E || NOV - DEC 2017
Sometimes a vacation is long over-due and is the best cure for any mental-block. Do you consider yourself a trend setter?
I do not consider myself a trend-setter for the product line I’m currently vested in. I believe trend-setting characteristics apply to more “Ready-to-Wear” product lines. Trends nowadays turnover as quickly as posts appear on Social Media. Moreover, I aim for my style to impact and ripple as timeless pieces. How much does your Cuban heritage influence your designs?
My design is greatly influenced by my Cuban heritage
from a pre-Castro era, where Cuba was one of the Gems of the Caribbean and a travel destination for the wealthiest families of the world.
Where do people find you in social media?
What are some of your current fashion obsessions?
Twitter: @RealOscarLopez
www.facebook.com/oscarlopezdesigner/ Instagram: @realOscarLopez
My obsession is and has always been over the top hand craftsmanship, well executed and unique. What was your life like after you won Project Runway, were there pitfalls, big surprises from the impact of winning; was the success difficult in any ways? Prior to Project Runway, I focused on the satisfaction of my customer. The biggest surprises from the show was the ability to self-assess, viewing myself work on different challenges — that was an immense learning and growing experience. Post winning Project Runway, the value of my clients’ prior investments in my pieces has soared in their eyes; my brand took a place on the table amongst nationally recognized labels. If you could have any celebrity spokesmodel, to wear your design, who would it be?
We would need to bring Joan Rivers back to life. As Fashion Police’s queen on the throne, she may send me to jail here and there but for the most part my brand would be make her hear-contempt from the living — Sophia Loren or Monica Bellucci. How important is Fashion Week for you?
I don’t participate because my sales are not generated from that market. I do encourage up-and-coming designers to explore those avenues. Tell us about your upcoming collections. How far ahead of time do you start on a collection?
The new collection is called Zenith & Nadir - I’m working on wardrobe that starts from the top at the head-piece down to the gown. Color palette: from light metallic to Smokey tones. My collections takes the process of two seasons prior to launch. What do you hope to achieve with your label? To be an everlasting brand, recognized and admired for its own luster.

Orange County, boasting its magical kingdoms and manicured beach towns, is a far cry from the steel streets of Michigan. What brought you to California and how long have you been living there? Do you still have family in Michigan and do you ever get back for visits?
This question always cracks me up! I’m actually not from Michigan...I was born & raised in Southern California in a little town called Montrose (which is close to Pasadena) After High School, I attended Baylor University in Waco Texas (so some think I’m from Texas) but my late Fiancé Jeff Beitzel was from Michigan, and so the first season you see me traveling there. Unfortunately several websites have the facts a bit mixed up. The Real Housewives of Orange County came to you by sheer happenstance, talk to us about what it feels like behind the glaring lights of reality television.
I was cast on the Real Housewives of Orange County because of a referral from Slade. Slade’s neighbor Scott Dunlop was the series creator. Slade left RHOC after season 2 to film a spin off series for Bravo. Slade suggested me to the network. I had no interest at first. I said no way am I doing that show! It was my late Fiancé Jeff who persuade me to do it. He had been battling leukemia for months. He was just entering remission and he thought it would be fun to focus on something other than the cancer, so I ultimately agreed. Filming for the show was nothing like I expected. You go in thinking, wow! What a fun adventure to go be on TV with these fabulous OC woman (unfortunately some of them were pretty horrible to me) and that took its toll on me for the first few seasons. As far as the cameras go, it took a while to get use to them but eventually you forget they are even there. My overall experience was a good one, I learned so much about myself and about people through the process. More than anything I am beyond grateful for the incredible fan base and friends I gained from my time on the show! I feel so lucky to have connected to so many amazing fans and have them be so loyal to me even this many years later! We imagine you are of mind that everything happens for a reason, having said that, is there a particular moment that you regret sharing on the show?
Everything does happen for a reason, weather you were of present mind and initiated the event or you were the unwilling victim of someone else’s devious
28 ||

plan (which unfortunately seemed to happen to me a lot) However there is a reason for everything, and through it all I have learned valuable lessons that have helped me grow as an individual. So I wouldn’t say I regret sharing anything, because I am an authentic person and I think that is what the audience appreciated about me. I was just real with my feelings, my emotions and my truth. I didn’t back down because it is the cool thing to do. I stood up for what I believed was right, I was honest and didn’t do things just for TV or to keep my job. I believe the audience recognized that with me and thus the reason I gained such an incredible fan base while on the show. They saw that I have a zest for life and that I am a pretty positive person no matter what life throws my way. I can be a total dork, I am loyal to a fault, I stand up for what is right, and I love deep. How did your time on Housewives prepare you for the new direction your life has taken?
RHOC has made me strong. I always knew I was strong but this show made me Unbreakably Strong no matter how much people, production, etc., tried to wear me down or hurt me. I always stood on truth and thus the reason I could withstand the heat and the accusations and the lies made up about me. It has opened my eyes to the dark side of some people. It has given me experiences so many people might never experience in their lifetime, (like being on the Oprah Winfrey show, flying all round the world for appearances, walking red carpets with Brad Pitt, or being on the cover of magazines) which I will forever be grateful for, those fantastic and exhilarating experiences. My life has always been something I create and manifest through prayer and faithfulness, and the Lord continues to bless me with wonderful things in my life. Every day is not perfect and I go through hardships but my future has never looked better. I am so blessed to have the best relationship /partner in Slade a person could ask for, I have an incredible family and friends, I have a successful and thriving business, so life is pretty blessed right now. Let’s talk about your labor of love, Gretchen Christine. How involved are you in the creative process for both the makeup brand and handbag brand? Where do you find inspiration? Gretchen Christine is definitely a labor of love for me and it was born from a deep passion for fashion and a dream God gave me since a little girl.

I am so lucky to have found my gift of helping others through my business. I wake up every day excited to go to work & to create something new and exciting that will help women look and feel their best (and at an accessible price point). I am intimately involved in every aspect of Gretchen Christine from design, to sampling, manufacturing to production, distribution to fulfillment, web development and SEO optimization, all the way through marketing and sales. I am involved with my amazing team handling everything from concept to credit card. Gretchen Christine just celebrated two big milestones; our 8yr anniversary and the fact that we were just recently acquired by a global portfolio of luxury & e-commerce brands. It has been the dream I have been working towards for the last 8yrs as I have been growing my company. I have found an incredible partner in Alex Dastmalchi and I am so grateful for this newest acquisition. Gretchen Christine will be able to grow exponentially now with our new distribution channels and our seven different fulfillment warehouses all around the world. As far as inspiration goes truly everything around me inspires our designs, from a beautiful flower I see in nature, to the different cultures I explore during my travels, it can be the architecture of a building or a unique textile...I pull inspiration from all these things. In a market inundated with so many choices, what is it about your products that set them apart from countless others?
I believe it’s in the details. Gretchen Christine thrives on putting their customer needs first, and our newest collection stands out because of the versatility we created. We believe Gretchen Christine to be a fashion and beauty solutions company. This means we design with purpose. This collection includes interchangeable/reversible straps or consider the purse inside purse feature of Audrianna Messenger as an example. The conversion of the Jaime Tote (from a larger tote to a smaller more structured bag) which allows it to be used in different ways. Also the details and embellishments of the bags; from the 14K gold plated purse feet to the multiple pockets for organization, to the gorgeous gold studded straps and the removable luggage logo tags. Every piece is made with love and with our customers’ needs in mind. Why is making your product affordable, so important to you? Talk to us about setting price points and managing customer demand. The catalyst for Gretchen Christine was the fact that back in 2009 when we started the company, I was 30 ||
FASHION M A G A Z I N E || NOV - DEC 2017
speaking with so many people who could not afford the high-end designer cosmetics and handbags that were showcased on RHOC. It actually made me sad these things were so far out of reach for so many people. It became my mission to create amazing products with similar embellishments, bells and whistles, and quality that you would find in a designer handbag or makeup, but that was accessible to the everyday woman. We presently have inventory in a west coast warehouse and a warehouse in PA. Our other warehouses are located in Toronto Canada, London UK, and Sydney Australia. Keeping the right amount of products stocked in each warehouse based on sales and promotions on those respective countries I think is a big challenge for any company but we have a great logistics team and I think we do a pretty good job of it. You have transitioned from using real leather to vegan leather, what was the thought process behind this change?
Gretchen Christine is trying to do their little part in being more eco-friendly and also socially responsible. I myself am a huge animal lover and since a segment of our customer base was requesting the option of a vegan leather collection, it was an easy choice to make. It took a full year to develop this collection because I was so particular with how I wanted the vegan leather to look, feel and perform. I sent samples of real leather bags to the factory and we went through many rounds of sampling different ingredients and fabrication processes before we found the perfect material, that looks and feels like real leather. The new technology being develop in the manufacturing process is quite extraordinary. This collection contains materials that have no animal biproducts, they have a similar strength and feel to real leather. Our material actually holds its structure better and doesn’t break down over time like real leather. This allows us to do so many more things when it comes to design. It’s the perfect blend of durability with flexibility.

As a social media influencer with thousands of followers, your fans are afforded an up-close view into your life. How do you navigate the distinction between your public and private persona?
I don’t really. What you see is what you get. I am authentic with my fans and I think that is why there is such a tight bond with us and they are so loyal. I am real, raw, unfiltered, and relatable. I don’t view myself as anything better or more special than the next person. I want to empower others to find their true purpose in life, I want to be an inspiration and I want to let them know that life isn’t always easy but it’s your mindset that can help you navigate through those tough times. I love and adore my fans, and they inspire me every day. I share with them as I would a close friend. There may be small details about me
that get missed from time to time but for the most part we share it all, the good, the bad and the ugly. A singer-songwriter, you have written many songs and recorded, Nothing without You and Unbreakable. Great songs by the way, is it your hope to sell your songs or sing them yourself?
Thank you for the sweet compliment. Writing music was always just a part of my creative outlet. I am constantly writing my thoughts and ideas down. I believe a life worth living is worth recording. As such as I love music and I love to sing, my intent was never to record my own music. I always envisioned other artists singing my songs. It was Slade who encouraged me to sing my own music. I will probably always write, but as far as going back into the studio...that might be more difficult now because of how busy I am with running my company. Sometimes I’m in the mood for opera and sometimes I love to relax at night with listening to Spanish Guitar. I run the full gamut. Honestly, when it comes to music, it’s about how it makes me feel, I just love it all… Following in your father’s footsteps as multi-faceted and successful entrepreneur what comes next?

Ah, the wedding, Slade and I are getting ready to celebrate 9yrs together in February. He is my soulmate, & sometimes I feel like the luckiest girl alive because of the way he loves and adores me. I literally wake up every morning to my best friend and couldn’t be happier. So even though one day we hope to do the formal “I do’s” it’s just not our priority right now, we are focused on putting money towards IVF to start a family together and we already know we are together for life. A marriage certificate is not going to change that for us. Who knows maybe we will just be like Kurt and Goldie! It seems to have worked out great for them!

I moved with my family from Denver Colorado, September 1996, to Las Vegas because my mom took an amazing position as a nurse at the Lake Mead Hospital. I was only 18 at the time and wasn’t sure where I would fit in in this adult play land. But soon I

had found my niche in modeling and as an extra in movies. As I turned 21 the city was my oyster becoming one of the most well-known names and faces of Las Vegas modeling and nightlife scenes. How did you find yourself immersed in the world of MMA fighting?
My introduction into the MMA scene came in 2000 when I worked at the Whiskey Bar owned by Rande Gerber located inside the Green Valley Ranch Hotel owned by the Fertitta Brothers who had also recently purchased the UFC. They asked if I would like to be a ring girl and already being a huge fan of WWF and boxing I jumped at the chance to have free front row tickets! Allow us a front row seat, its fight night, can you describe what that feels like?
Front Row seats to an MMA Fight are indescribable, the energy, the intensity! It’s the most exciting live entertainment out there, and I was there at the beginning. Take us back to the moment when you met Tito Ortiz. We can neither confirm nor deny that we popped popcorn, awaiting your reply.
I remember how nice he was and always looking out for people. He will say that he met me at the

Whiskey Bar sometime before that but I was so in awe of all the celebrities that walked through back then. Back in those days UFC was a small family and most of them remained friends over the years. But I didn’t start seeing Tito romantically until May 2013 when he was having knee surgery and was newly a single father of twin 4 year olds. Co-parenting can be challenging at times but raising children can also be incredibly fulfilling. What are some of most rewarding moments, big or small that you have shared with your children?
Parenting is definitely one of the most difficult and rewarding job there is. I have to say that nothing in the world prepares you for it but little, hugs, kisses, and I love you melt you on the spot. Watching them learn and teaching them is the best. I feel so blessed that Tito shares his life and his children with me. WAGS of LA, did you relocate to film the show? How did this opportunity come to you?
No relocation necessary, WAGS LA covers all of California. A couple of the wives are from San Diego as well. My agent Anna Chidoba called me about the show, whom I’ve known many years she was also one of my modeling agents in Las Vegas.

With your self-described “outspoken personality” how do you combat trolls and negative feedback?
I use to get a lot of hate and cyber bullying when I first started dating Tito and admittedly it was very hard on me. It started to take a toll on my health and how I saw myself. In recent years I’ve had to remove myself from feeling anything about it and just block and delete hateful comments. The people who write these hateful things really must be lacking in their lives and I now feel sorry for them. Cyber bullying and trolling are very destructive actions but I believe it comes from a broken place. I simply will not take it personally anymore. What can we expect to see from your family on the show?
Our family dynamic is one of hard work, love and laughter. On the show I’m sure it will be a bit dramatic as well but we are always true to ourselves and family comes first always. Your journey in the entertainment industry started at the tender age of five on the Disney Channel. You have since gone on to grace the cover of countless magazines, appear in national commercials as well as hosting competitions. How do you think your cumulative body of work has prepared you for this new and exciting chapter in your life? From a very young age I knew I wanted to model and act. I was in awe of the glamorous models on magazines and the actresses who made you fall in love with their emotions. Modeling young was great for my confidence but it also taught me the hard lessons of auditioning and not being quite what they are looking for. I hadn’t ever really thought about reality television before. I’ve really focused most of my career on modeling, but I’m most definitely up for the challenge.

Rhythmic music has settled into the very beat of your heart and enquiring eyes focus on the art that unfolds on the runway, offering the rooms only light. Statuesque models clad in fabrics that are “lined in silk, so they not only look gorgeous, but feel it too.” Patricia Gomez - Gracia, the Spanish born fashion designer provides a candid look into her creative world of style and class. Following after her fashionable mother, Patricia has always been a creative force. Her fashion is a direct reflection of her world travels from Miami to New York and London’s west end which she now calls her adoptive home. designing around a fabric selection and empowering the women who embrace her work. Born in Spain’s elegant capital city of Madrid, how long did you live in your native country? What did your family do for a living? Are you from a large family?
I left Madrid when I was two years old as my parents moved to Miami, Fl. I spent my summers in Spain growing up in order to ensure I knew my heritage. I have one older brother and sister. My mother was a real estate agent, my father was in commercial real estate. What were some of your interests as a young girl? Can you describe when fashion became a thing for you or how did it manifest itself? Fashion has been a thing since day one. My mother has told me stories of me going into
tantrums because I had to wear things a particular way, or because I had to wear a particular dress, even if it wasn’t appropriate for the weather. My mother has incredible taste and what I have is due to her! Good taste is inherent. What prompted the move to Miami? How old were you when your family relocated? Can you share a fond memory of what family time looked like in your home? I am really fortunate to have grown up in a home where family always came first, through thick and thin. Growing up in Miami, we lived with an ocean as our backyard and boating was a regular thing. I remember having birthday parties on our boat and thinking that was the norm. Talk to us about life in Miami, infusing your Spanish culture with this vibrant city?
I’ve seen the city go through such a transformation; it’s really incredible. I remember going down to News Cafe late 80’s and South Beach was so raw. I definitely miss that aspect of it, as it feels a bit commercialized now, but that goes hand in hand with any city that grows up. Growing up, the cities’ night life had a huge influence on me. I remember going clubbing at 15 years old, and I loved seeing how dressed up everyone was. Mid 90’s there were so many people with unique style that really put the effort into creating eye catching outfits. That is definitely something that has transpired through to my designs. Gomez-Gracia is about confidence and making a statement. Each piece has incredible craftsmanship and attention to details. These two collectively unique cities are reflective in your work, what is about the two cultures that enhance your creativity? Miami is primarily about showing off your curves, whilst oozing sex appeal. It’s a hot city and showing skin is the norm. It’s very body and image conscious. London, is a metropolitan city with all four seasons. You need to dress more practical and the emphasis is less on being sexy, and more on practicality, but still presenting yourself in a chic and original way. I combine these
aspects in the design. I believe women should be comfortable in what they wear, but they should look sexy but in a tasteful way. When life gives you curves, flaunt them! Do you remember the first piece you made?
Of course! I have an incredible memory so I remember every single piece. I even remember what pieces customers buy! Gomez-Gracia is my baby, it’s an extension of me. My first piece was actually a hand embroidered clutch, I started with accessories. Where did you attend school and was fashion your primary field of study? Do you recall a specific teacher or instructor who inspired you?
University of Florida. My degree is in Marketing with a minor in Economics. I’m autodidactic. I learned everything from internships, working in the industry, and working hard to improve my weaknesses. I moved to London to train and learn the technical side of the industry. From Miami to London’s west end, talk to us about the decision to move and why Europe?
I wanted to work for Alexander Mcqueen, who was, and is, London based. I had European nationality due to my Spanish passport, so I took a chance. Whilst Miami really has come a long way in terms of its local fashion industry, it didn’t have much 13 years ago. Fashion also takes into accounts all seasons, and Miami could not offer that due to the year round heat. London represented that middle ground of speaking English, whilst being in Europe. It felt like the right fit. Alexander McQueen a true fashion icon and Julien MacDonald, tell us about your time training with these significant designers. Are there other designers in the industry whose work you admire?
My time at McQueen was incredible. It’s a tough environment, as there was a lot of pressure, but it was also a beautiful experience. It challenges you to reach a very high level of technical and creative skills. I don’t really tend to keep up to date with what other designers are doing as I really want to keep the brand original and stick to what works for us, regardless of what the current trend is. My admiration stems from an appreciation of innovative techniques.

Celebrity brings a certain level of notoriety as well as the opportunity to expand your brand. From Alicia Key’s geometric blazer on the Ellen Show to Carrie Underwood’s show stopping number on the Grammy red carpet, is there a particular celebrity you would love to dress and what is it about their sense of style that speaks to you?
There are a lot of beautiful women, but we are drawn more to women that have an innate sense of self and style, regardless of them being a celebrity or not. It’s very flattering for someone to want to wear GomezGracia, as many brands are readily available. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to dress someone who understands what we are doing and looks beautiful in Gomez-Gracia.
Let’s talk about the work, you have said that you start 5 to 6 months in advance to prepare for a line/show. Walk us through this process, what’s happening during this time frame? Is it a stressful time or do you embrace the challenge with quiet steel determination? I begin by finding fabrics that inspire me, then I design around them, but still needing to make a collection that is cohesive. The fabrics can be quite different so finding a unifying theme can be challenging. During this time, we see concepts become actual garments. It’s a process. The design is given to a pattern cutter, who is someone who needs to understand the handwriting of the brand in order to cut a pattern with lines that reflect our vision. We then go through a stage of mocking up that garment in

order to achieve the perfect fit, at which point it is then made up for real. It’s a process that feeds itself as you progress, but it also means that you have to be quite vigilant with staying on track and maintaining the critical path as otherwise you won’t meet your deadlines. It can be stressful, but I’ve learnt that life really isn’t worth stressing and that stressing doesn’t help achieve anything. I try and maintain a chilled out work environment but of course there are times that can be trying. You just have to take it one step at a time and remember the big picture. Often times we hear about fashion risk or stepping outside of the “on trend” box, is that something you subscribe to or do you stay in your own creative lane?
The Gomez-Gracia brand has a combination of things that may be considered ‘risky’, as well items that are more ‘basic’. Our focus is on making beautiful pieces that make women feel empowered, not about being on trend or being labelled a certain way. I do what feels right. When I tried to subscribe to doing things the way the fashion industry dictated, it didn’t work. Ultimately we just want to do our own thing, enjoy the ride and dress fabulous women who appreciate what we do! Why is fabric choice so vital during the early stages of the creative process?
Fabrics can make or break a design. You could have a beautifully made garment with an incredible fit, but if you use a cheap fabric, it will ruin it. We only work with quality fabrics that flatter women’s bodies and are made from natural fibers. All of our garments are lined in silk, so they not only look gorgeous but feel it too. Aside from a fabrics composition and technical use, their appearance also helps set a garment apart. Gomez-Gracia uses quirky fabrics with interesting textures, allowing for edgy silhouettes. Allowing the work to speak for itself, what do you think your creations say? I am woman, hear me roar!
If you could extend one piece of fashion advice to our readers, what would it be?
March to the beat of your own drum, but do it with style and class. 52 ||

The Price is Right lost a bit of its shine this past October as the lovely Gwendolyn Osborne Smith took her last turn on the long running game show. The British born model has created Smith Entertainment Group alongside her husband, veteran NBA star Kenny Smith. Leading by example, the power couple hope to bring culturally blended programs with positive influences to the viewing public. MOST spoke with the entrepreneur about growing up in Europe, raising a family and taking Smith Entertainment Group to the next level. With her infectious smile and determined spirit, we can all agree, priceless...seems pretty right We have to know, is it as fun as we suspect it is to spin The Wheel? Absolutely! Not quite as fun without the sound effects. It has a nice weight to it.
Having shared the stage with countless contestants during your time on The Price is Right, is there a particular moment with a contestant or a family member that stands out?
For Nurse’s Day, a contestant won a car in the showcase. It was extra emotional for me as I hugged her because my mum recently retired after working 40 years as a Labor & Delivery nurse. I know how hard they work and how much they help other people. I was overjoyed to share this special moment with her. Allow us to take a step back, can you share with us a bit about growing up in Bath? What were some of the traditions or customs you shared as a culturally blended family?
Bath is a beautifully quaint, safe city. I enjoyed the freedom of riding my bike in the city throughout my teenage years to visit my friends. This is something kids nowadays, especially in large cities like Los Angeles cannot do. It’s very picturesque and scenic. I loved being outdoors. My mum and dad made sure we were part of the Multicultural Club that held events to be inclusive of everybody. What lead your family to Miami, Florida? A major move during your teenage years, what do you remember most about the transition and how quickly did your family adjust?
My family went through a drastic divorce, one parent stayed in England and the other in Miami. I quickly learned how to fit in at a new environment and country by utilizing my love of music to soothe my soul and connect with people who appreciated the arts just like me.

Miami, home to those glamorous neighborhoods in South Beach and its art infused architecture, what did you love most about living in the Magic City?
I immediately fell in love with the melting pot of cultures. The stunning beaches, spicy nightlife, diverse food, warm salty beach air. Everything about Miami is so alive!
Relocating to Los Angeles as a single parent to pursue a career in the entertainment industry must have taken great courage. Talk to us about the thought process behind this pivotal moment in your life as well as your child’s.
In my mind, NOT taking the risk to live my life fully would’ve been the worst choice as a parent vs taking the safe route of living the mundane every day. Showing my daughter how to work hard and go after your dreams was an important part of parenting for me. What words of wisdom or encouragement did your family share with at the time that still resonate today?
I don’t want to lie, they were scared and they didn’t want me to leave. I remember them saying we love you and we’re here for you. That meant a lot because despite them wanting me to stay, I still felt I had their blessing. Before landing the job at The Price is Right, you modeled to care for your family. Tell us about those early modeling gigs and how you overcame the uncertainty of not knowing what comes next. It was definitely scary to completely depend on modeling at first. But once I built up clientele, 60 ||

especially in the runway world, I felt I would be able to provide for my daughter as a parent with modeling. I have to thank Runways The Talent Group in Miami Beach for believing in me and making sure I had work. Once I realized the modeling world was a business I was able to stay prepared and always be ready for my next job. How long were you in Los Angeles before landing the job on The Price is Right? What was that first show like?
Three years. The first show was very anxiety ridden. I was relying on my smile to get me through. Lol We would be remised if we did not ask you to weigh in on this latest iteration of the perils of the “casting couch.” Your thoughts?
How do we begin to address these difficult issues when the lines have become so clearly blurred? It was very brave for all the women to come forward. I hope their courage will help others in some way that have gone through the same thing. I would say to all women that you are in control of your own destiny and you should never allow a moment to overpower your own ethics, moral, and decision making. Be aware and honest about what is going on. Don’t ever live in fear. Find a way to remain dignified. Were you a fan of basketball before you met your husband Kenny Smith? Rather than ask the tried and true “how do you maintain your relationship in Hollywood,” we would rather ask how your parenting style complement each other, particularly in your blended families. What do you find most rewarding about being a mother to 5 children?
Tell us about the Smith Entertainment Group. How it came to be and what you hope to accomplish with this endeavor?
SEG came together because of Kenny and my creative minds constantly going. We realized through the success of projects & events over 11 years of marriage and a meeting with David Eilendberg (ITV) that we had something that was worth pursuing. I’d love to accomplish creating more culturally blended television that has a more of a positive influence in the television world. I’d also like for it to lead to my next job on television as a host. What projects is SEG currently working on or promoting?
What’s the dream for this labor of love? I had a meeting at OWN which was very exciting. The thought of working with Oprah, who I have so much respect for and admiration of, would be a dream come true and a perfect fit. Many will look at your story and find it empowering. A European transplant; single parent; dream chaser; successful 11 year run on a popular television show and now embarking on a bright new chapter. What do you say to those who have met with adversity along the way and are looking for just the right encouragement to keep striving?
I’d say learn to love yourself first, all of your individuality. Learn your individual strengths and weaknesses. Figure out which parts and characteristics about yourself that you love. When you know weaknesses learn how to work your best in the world despite your weak areas. Know that there is only one you and you are enough. Believe in yourself, believe in your dreams and work hard.
No, I wasn’t a fan of basketball before I met Kenny, but I have major respect for athletes and their work. The most rewarding part of being a Mum to 5 is the LOVE…the love that is given, the love amongst each other and seeing all the kids grow and share with each other is a huge compliment in itself.

Do you prefer more fitness or fashion modeling?
I actually like both. They are very different, but there are things that I love about modeling for both. What skills are most important for a successful career in fashion modeling?
You have to be able to express yourself in different ways. Magazines and photographers want a model that is able to say a lot with their expressions and body language, so being able to clearly show your emotions and feelings with your face and movements is very important. At what age did you move to USA and what was your ultimate dream?
I moved to Los Angeles with my family when I was 21 to expand my modeling career. I am trying to become a top male model in the industry and also become a well-known actor. How did you land a modeling contract with Guess?
Very simply actually, Guess saw my modeling portfolio on my agency’s website and requested to meet with me. They fell in love with me instantly so I felt very lucky. Being a part of an incredible and internationally recognized brand like Guess was a major milestone in my career. How do you cope under the pressures modeling for such iconic name? (Laughs) I’m very calm. I don’t stress out a lot, but if/when I do, working out and running have always been my best stress relievers. What have you found to be the hardest thing about modeling?
Opening up in front of the camera. I can be shy sometimes, and I still have a difficult time opening up when it’s time to shoot. What are some of your favorite designers or stores? Guess, Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Versace, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, and Hugo Boss. I have more but these are amazing! 82 ||

How do you maintain your figure, what is your diet like? Describe an average day of what you eat.
I replace my carbs with good fats such as nuts & avocados and I try to eat under 2300 calories every day. I eat scrambled eggs with vegetables in the morning, salad with chicken & avocado for lunch and the same for dinner. In between I try to eat hardboiled eggs and nuts. How do you divide your time between acting and modeling?
It can be very difficult to balance the two, so every day you have to be ready for anything. Some days you have no castings or shoots, and sometimes they call you and ask you to get to a casting that you’re already late for! What are some of your upcoming acting projects?
I am making a new reel of some projects I’ve worked on. I also have some other exciting stuff on the way but I can’t talk about it just yet. 84 ||

Where would you like your career in acting to lead you? Wherever my heart desires. Right now I’d love to have a lead role for a Marvel movie or a Netflix series. But who knows what I might want to do next year? What should we expect from you in 2018?
I’m partnering with my family to create a beautiful accessory line for men and women. I’m very excited about it and can’t wait to reveal the final product. We’ve been working on it for a long time and I really hope people love it as much as I do. There is a lot more coming, but I can’t say much now. All I can say for now is to stay tuned because this isn’t the last you’ve heard from Janis Ostojic!

Exclusive Interview with Award Winning Photographer
Alee Hassan By: Kelly Price Out of Lahore Pakistan is a photographer whose creativity is beyond the camera’s lens. Alee Hassan’s photography is imaginative, unique, and award winning. This year he was nominated for the Lux Style Award in Best Fashion Photography. In 2016 he won the Lux trophy for Best Emerging Fashion Photographer. For the past four years he has won the Behance Appreciation Award. Yet there is no award necessary to appreciate the beauty of his work. His shoots go from ultimate bejeweled to techno fashion. Alee is not a photographer that just takes pictures. He is behind the concepts, set design, styling, etc. Many of his pictures make you wonder, “How did he do that?” But one should not get sidetracked with the how of his work, but the message behind it. Often he is addressing important topics in our society. Take a look at his work and see beneath the obvious. Hassan is dedicated to his work and his message; his passion for photography is driven by things deep inside himself. Look through his work, I have my eye on a few I’d like to see on my own walls, find some that make you think, dream or act.

Q&A Your religion seems to be an important part of your life, how does it influence your life and your photography?
I am a proud Muslim and yes my religion has a great influence on me. But as far as the influence on my work is concerned I am where I am is by the grace of ALLAH, so I guess my thoughts are influenced at some point because I am brought up in a religious household. But when I say religious it doesn’t mean conservative, Islam is sometimes a misunderstood religion in the world but it’s not at all a narrow minded religion. It allows you to follow your passion and allows every gender and race to work and follow their dreams while earning your bread and butter in the righteous manner. Can you describe a shoot that you were surprised that you were able to complete successfully?
Yes, there were a couple of shoots that were hard to pull off. But I’m glad I challenged myself and I have always been able to achieve what I was aiming for. Recently I did a shoot ‘Lacuna’ that I have been planning to do for the last 2 years but haven’t been able to complete the image perfectly in my head. It’s a concept which was loaded with content and for quite some time I was trying to tone it down and compose an image that speaks on its own and also doesn’t look too busy. And recently this year I was able to pull it off. It was displayed in a group show at an art gallery in Lahore. What location would you like to do a shoot that you haven’t yet and why?
I think the world is filled with magical locations and each one brings its own character and history into a photograph. But I would really like to do a high-fashion shoot near an activated volcano with lava. The idea seems very unusually appealing and exciting to me.

Do you have your work on your walls in your home? If yes, which, and why? If not, why? I have a huge wall in my office dedicated to my early works. I have put up all the early works because it gives me motivation and reminds me of all the struggle I had to do to get where I am right now. I am making a proper space at my home and soon will soon display my work there as well. Can you give us a couple of tips to take a high quality picture on our phones?
Mobile pictures can never be DSLR pictures but good light source and composition esthetic is the key to take great pictures. What comes first, the theme of the shoot or the fashion of the shoot? Can you explain why?
For editorial shoots the theme of the shoots comes first and then you go further into it such as deciding the looks, clothes and fashion. But for commercial shoots the fashion comes first and then keeping the clothes and looks in mind you create the theme of the shoot. You create some amazing illusions in your photography. Have you ever had a shoot you couldn’t pull off? If yes, what happened or didn’t happen?
There is nothing that cannot be done if you set your mind to it. Having said that being in a profession long enough you get a hold on your craft and during the brainstorming and content process making you know what you can accomplish and how far you can go in creating illusions.

Are your illusions Photoshopped? Do you have any things that you won’t Photoshop/ edit? Do you ever not edit a shot? I am not a huge fan of creating illusions in Photoshop but at times for some concepts it’s a requirement, other than that I just use it to fix things.
You’ve said that your photographs have “underlying messages and issues,” can you tell us some of these? Being an accomplished photographer and someone whose voice is being heard by a majority of population it’s my duty to highlight the issues that are hashed out in our society. I have been doing shoots on a lot of activist issues; such as infertility, sexuality, catcalling, traumatic depression, rights of women etc. How Social Media is changing your business? What’s your favorite Social Media Platform?
It’s an era of social media for sure and it does effect everything including the business but I think regarding my business it has a positive impact overall as social media platforms these days is the way to communicate and to showcase your work for the world. Instagram is my favorite social media platform as for my medium of work it’s the best way to put your mark on the globe.

Nordic Angels was founded by Marketa Häkkinen in March 2017 in Monaco, but this new brand has already made a breakthrough in the fashion industry. The designer and founder, Marketa, is a wellknown socialite in Monaco, where she resides with her husband Mika Häkkinen, a former Formula One World Champion. She enjoys a luxurious life with her husband and three children. Through Marketa, Mika has developed a keen eye for fashion and participates in buying her clothes while taking her body type and size into consideration. In an interview with Elle Magazine, Marketa mentioned that Mika has a good sense of style, but that was not always the case. When Marketa met Mika he would wear old-fashioned clothing, high-rise pants and lacked an overall sense of style. After thorough advisement from Marketa, Mika is now a “stylish and handsome man.” Together they enjoy fashion and the extravagances it has to offer. Marketa made her start in the fashion industry when she studied design and textiles in Czech Republic, her native country. Once her children were in school, she finally decided to pursue her 114 ||

dreams of becoming an international fashion designer. With her celebrity friends in mind, Marketa has designed luxurious and unique pieces of clothing that they can wear when they attend stylish events. Her passion for fashion is highly influenced by her lifestyle and aims to create high fashion couture pieces with the use of exclusive materials made from deer hide. Her expensive, one of a kind designs conjure an elegant yet sexy style to her clothing mirroring her adventurous life. With the support of her husband, Marketa embarked on a journey when she founded her brand, Nordic Angels, in March 2017. Her two feature collections consist of high fashion couture and bridal couture styles. Her collections, Lapland and Orchestra are comprised of beautiful bridal gowns inspired by the past, and feature high fashion couture pieces with an elegant but sexy and romantic style. All of her collections are fashioned with exclusive leather, deer hide, and high fashion lace and
tulle. These statement pieces evoke a unique, modern and sexy style with a customized approach that will make every woman feel special. Through her designs Marketa hopes to, “create the ultimate ‘Fairy Tale’ brand for all high profile customers globally.” Every sketch is designed with a specific woman in mind, made to represent real women, her curvy designs are created with the thought
that every woman should stay forever young. She hopes that the women wearing her designs “are proud of their body and feel that they’ve turned their life into fairytale.” For more information contact Stacey at Stacey@ nowprla.com or call 213-892-1615
