Overindulgence: Why We Do It and How to Take Control Christina Rosso

The festive season is upon us. A time filled with extravagant meals, freshly baked goods and free flowing alcohol. Maintaining self control can be difficult when we want to enjoy ourselves during this time of year. This can become a hurdle to overcome for our health and may lead us down the wrong path of overindulgence. The beginning of overindulging can lead to a vicious cycle that is difficult to escape if you do not have the right tools. The Blood Sugar Cycle Consumption of high glycemic foods and beverages, refined starches, sweets, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol lead to an upward spike in blood sugar. When blood sugar is high, the body’s reaction can include hyperactivity, loss of concentration, anxiety, headaches, hunger up to 3 hours after eating, blurry vision, and fatigue. In response to high blood sugar, insulin is secreted from the pancreas to lower it back down. Once the body releases an upward spike of insulin, blood sugar plummets, often times falling too low. When blood sugar is low, symptoms include fatigue, dizziness, headache, irritability, shakiness, sweating, chills, impatience, confusion, nausea, easily lost temper, cravings, and depression. In an attempt to self-regulate and stabilize blood sugar, the body either signals a craving for simple sugars, or triggers to adrenals to release cortisol, the stress hormone. When this happens, blood sugar can increase too high too fast, triggering insulin response yet again, and leading into a vicious cycle of blood sugar highs and lows. This is known as dysglycemia. The Role of Cortisol in Cravings and Overall Health The secretion and rise of insulin due to dysglycemia triggers the secretion and rise of cortisol. The secretion of cortisol also triggers the secretion of insulin. Other things that raise cortisol and insulin levels which can trigger cravings include: * stress * lack of sleep * emotional connections * lack of nutrients * lack of exercise * over exercising Cortisol signals fat to be deposited in the abdominal area. Known as Visceral Fat, it is stored in the abdominal cavity to surround the internal organs. This happens innately to protect them from danger. As this visceral fat grows, it gains MORE cortisol and insulin receptors than other areas which allow it to continue to grow. The more cortisol, the more visceral fat, and the more we see and feel the effects on our bodies. Fatigue is almost always associated with dysglycemia and high cortisol secretion. Other conditions that are associated include: * cardiovascular disease, stroke * diabetes and insulin resistance * inflammation * obesity * adrenal fatigue and other hormonal disruptions * Depression and anxiety disorders

Take Control of Your Cravings Here are 10 nutritional guidelines to reduce cravings and overindulgence: 1. Reduce intake, strictly limit or completely avoid caffeine, alcohol, nicotine. Herbal teas should be caffeine free- try peppermint, chamomile or rooibos! These substances act as stimulants, which naturally increase the body’s cortisol and blood sugar secretion. 2. Increase your water intake to 8-10 glasses per day. Begin your day with two large glasses and consume the rest in between meals- minimum 20 minutes before each meal or snack. If you feel an incoming craving, drink 1-2 glasses of water and wait 20 minutes. Sometimes the body can mistake hunger for thirst and by consuming enough water, it will eliminate any cravings caused from lack of water intake. 3. Consume 5-7 meals/snacks per day. Eat every 2-3 hours when you begin to feel hungry. Smaller, more frequent meals are an excellent aid for blood sugar stability and increasing metabolism. Keep snacks such as a bag of nuts and seeds or an apple with you for easy consumption. Avoid skipping meals! 4. Avoid eating while rushed and avoid grazing. Take 3-5 deep breaths before your meal or snack and enjoy while sitting down. Eat slowly and chew your food to a paste (20-30 chews) which will break down your food optimally and have you feeling fuller, faster. 5. Avoid distractions while eating such as watching television, reading or using a smartphone. Focus on your food and enjoy the appearance, smell and taste to its entirety. This will aid in the release of enzymes and other chemicals in the body that will break down your food optimally and allow for better absorption of nutrients. 6. Pair carbohydrates with proteins, fats or fibers. Include protein, fat or fiber with every meal which maintains a slow and steady release of blood sugar, minimizing spikes and keeping you fuller for longer. For example, pair apples with almond butter or carrots with hummus. 7. Increase intake of fiber. Try to have 2-3 tbsp of psyllium, flax, chia, or hemp seeds. This will help with stabilizing blood sugar, eliminating toxins in the body and overall weight loss. Add to shakes, salads or simply in water. 8. Provide your body with nutrients and avoid processed food. Vegetables or fruits are filled with essential vitamins and minerals that the body needs to function and strive. Incorporate more unprocessed foods into your diet. Increase intake of dark, leafy green vegetables. Swap refined grains like pasta, bread and cereal for lentils, beans, chick peas and quinoa. Avoid refined sugars, baked goods, refined grains, concentrated juices, soft drinks and swap dessert with low glycemic fruits like berries. Minimize intake of dairy, as lactose can also spike blood sugar. Reduce intake of high glycemic fruits including tropical fruits such as bananas. Try to choose fruits and vegetables that are in season and grown locally. Your cravings will decrease when the body absorbs a high amount of nutrients. 9. Avoid artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose and saccharin. Artificial sugars tend to increase blood sugar MORE than regular sugars. They also increase hunger and cravings, have no nutritional value and can act as neurotoxins. 10. Include supplementation including B vitamins, vitamin C and a multi vitamin to ensure you are getting enough essential nutrients that you may not be able to obtain from the food you are consuming.

Lifestyle Changes to Help Maintain Control While these nutritional guidelines can make a big difference, it is also extremely important to consider lifestyle factors. Here are 7 lifestyle guidelines to reduce cravings and overindulgence. 1. Exercise regularly- but don’t exercise too much. Include a mix of weight training and cardiovascular exercise into your weekly routine and allow yourself 2-3 days of rest per week. 2. Go to sleep earlier. Going to bed later in the evening increases cortisol production and decreases release of serotonin. Serotonin is meant to be produced in the evening and cortisol is meant to be produced in the morning. When these hormones are imbalanced, it can lead to many health problems including adrenal fatigue. 3. Practice guided meditation, deep breathing or yoga to reduce stress. You can also listen to soft, soothing music in times of high stress. By practicing these techniques daily, you will be able to manage stress and cravings with ease. 4. Create a food journal incorporating time of each meal, food and beverages consumed, and symptoms relating to digestion and dysglycemia. Write down anytime you have a craving, the time of day and the emotions you are feeling. This will help you pinpoint a particular time of day or particular emotion that may evoke cravings. Take note of emotions like fear, tension, anger, and shame. Doing this will help to you become more aware of your emotions when you get cravings and help you understand why you may be overindulging. Is it comfort food? Do you get extra hungry when you’re stressed out? Do you overindulge when you’re happy or sad? 5. Seek the help of a certified Holistic Nutritionist or Health Coach. They can help guide and educate you with meal planning, specific recommendations and grocery store tours. 6. Emotional freedom technique (EFT) can help reduce emotional attachments to food. You can see a practitioner that focuses on this modality or similar modalities to achieve emotional releases and help end your emotional overindulgence from the source. 7. Consider discussing your eating habits with an experienced counselor if you need someone to talk to. They can help guide you to finding out the root cause of your emotions and help you overcome them. 8. Seek guidance from a holistic Medical Doctor, Naturopathic Doctor or Holistic Nutritionist. They may recommend supplementation, cleansing and/or other specific recommendations based on your symptoms and health history. Now that you have all of the necessary tools to survive this festive season it’s time go out and ENJOY! We can enjoy our holidays and take care of our bodies at the same time. Remember if you ever get off track that you have the power to regain control.

From Shipwrecks to Ice Caves: stories from an underwater archaeologist Carmen Obied

As I am writing this, I find myself in the Middle East sitting in a small stone gazebo watching herds of camels and goats wander by. To my back a majestic mountain range paints the scene and separates this ancient fishing town from the seemingly endless Omani desert. To my front the wind is picking up and blowing my hair back as it simultaneously sends waves from the Indian Ocean crashing all up and down the Arabian coast. Today, my team’s search for submerged cultural heritage along the coast of Oman has been put on hold as we instead brace ourselves for a Category 3 tropical cyclone to make land fall just south of us in less than 24 hours. Palm trees are swaying and the goats seem to be moving with an uncharacteristic sense of urgency today. Now the soothing sound of the azan (call to prayer) echoes in the distance… a melodic reminder that with archaeology, you rarely know where you will end up next or what kind of crazy situation you may find yourself in, but that’s all part of the thrill of the job! My work as an archaeologist has taken me to Mediterranean coasts, Eastern deserts and even jungles. I hold an international accredited scientific scuba diving certification which I acquired in the Balkans, another alluring region I have come to know closely through archaeology. As a child I grew up in Portugal but my Egyptian heritage fuelled my dream to one day work in Egypt.

Archaeology has paved the way to many life experiences including the fulfilment of that dream. I found myself living on a boat for a few weeks recording a series of 2000 year old Roman shipwrecks in the mesmerising Red Sea all the way down to the Sudanese border! As the wind continues to pick up here in Oman, I am reminded that there is never a shortage of adventure on archaeological projects. A few years ago, I was sent to the small village of Pattanam in India by Kerala’s backwaters to run a magnetometry survey. This site is believed to be the ancient seaport Muziris, a thriving port-city involved in the trade network between Rome and India. A magnetometer is a device that can detect concentrations of iron deposits on land and on the seabed. It was used to identify sub-surface features such as brick walls, hearths, kilns and dumps to map the ancient maritime landscape of this Roman site. The presence of iron is often indicative of past human activity. Our search for archaeology left behind by this activity also took me on a month of jungle trekking and Hindu festivals! While surveying, I was suddenly caught under a heavy monsoon rainfall. In my struggle to seek shelter and keep the magnetometer dry, out of nowhere, I was rescued by an Indian lady who, though a stranger, took me to her small bungalow hidden within the forest… her and her friends greeted me with chai!

Just last month I was at 32 metres deep below the Mediterranean Sea just off the French/Spanish border performing accelerated decompression dives twice a day. Our team’s mission was to relocate a Roman shipwreck discovered and last seen in 1898 by hard hat divers along the Catalonian coast.

TRAVEL & PASSION

On our second dive, as we explored and uncovered the sandy seabed, what we sought suddenly revealed itself… a glimpse of a 2000+ year old wooden timber belonging to the Cala Cativa II wreck!

Diving projects It is a humbling and an aweinspiring moment to look over at your dive buddy and give them the ‘this is cool!’ hand signal when you both set eyes on something that has been hidden for millennia! As the excavation unfolded, the ship’s structure began to take form…preserved planks and timbers held together in a mortice-and-tenon construction, iron nails and even evidence of frames ‘sewn’ to the hull (yes, boats originating from Catalan shipyards in the north of Spain during this time period actually had structural pieces of wood stitched to one another with bits of hemp rope!). By the end of the two week mission, the Cala Cativa wreck site yielded a pickup truck load worth of shards of amphorae (ceramic transport vases). We had found a local Roman trading vessel.

I lead somewhat of a double life, being both a maritime archaeologist and international model. From London Fashion Week runways to underwater photoshoots and ice caves, I am fortunate that both pursuits quench my thirst for travel and adventure. Last year, I found myself modelling in a crystal ice cave in Iceland. Actually, the original ice cave we were supposed to do our shoot in collapsed the day before, forcing us to go to an alternate location! So you see… the fashion world can be adventurous too! We drove on a bumpy off-road of dark sands surrounded by volcanic mountains and glaciers (while having our makeup and hair done in the car of course!). When we reached our location (where they filmed Interstellar and many others), with models prepped and styled in striking dresses, the entire team and crew had to crawl through the ice cave’s low tunnel while trying to avoid the 1m deep ice puddles along the way. We reached the opening to the cavern and it was freezing, windy and raining. However, the excitement in the air helped you ignore the gushing wind behind you, the numbness in your hands and feet, the zero degree Celsius water dripping on your head from the ceiling above, and you did what you always do in every shoot… you get into character. Though challenging, it is one of my favourite shoots to date.

So where to next? I’m hoping to set foot in the Levant (Eastern Mediterranean), a region I became immersed in through my PhD. This part of the world flourished during the Roman Empire and lay at the crossroad of many great cultures and civilisations. Soon I will defend my thesis before a panel of experts and with luck (and a bit of preparation) I’ll pass! (‘inshallah’ = God willing!). For now, though, I will sign off and go back into my room and prepare for the big storm. By the way…if you’re reading this…I guess I survived!

INTERVIEW

by Carmen Obied, Features Editor

Patrick Michael | RS THEORY

From sunny Southern California, we bring you the multimedia collage artist behind

RS Theory - Patrick Michael

His vivid unconventional collages created with magazine clippings reflect his dynamic fashion expressions and styles, with his works featured in magazines such as Teen Vogue and Nylon. Carmen: You have a very distinctive style of fashion collage. How did RS Theory develop? Patrick: It started last year in one of my art classes, for a collage project. I decided to play around with the idea of magazine collages made specifically for Instagram. With time I developed some kind of formula for how I put them together.

FashionShiftMAGAZINE

Carmen: Who would you love to collaborate with? What kinds of details trigger your imagination? Patrick: I would love to collaborate with V Magazine and a designer like Marc Jacobs. Something has to feel right, or feel cool, then I can shape whatever I’m doing around it. I also like to keep the model or brand in mind, and make something that I think they would like and potentially respost, that definitely triggers my imagination to constantly make different things.

Carmen: What are some of the mediums you use to create your images? Patrick: I use many things such as paint, Lucite, toys, marbles, books and a lot of vintage magazines. All collages are photographed with my iPhone, and then disassembled. Carmen: How do you figure out what you’re looking for when designing a collage? Patrick: I always start with the fashion and work around it. If something is slightly rocker I try to amplify it, if something has an incredibly boring background in the magazine I give it a new one that I feel vibes with the image. Carmen: What impact do you hope to have on your audience? Patrick: Over time I hope to inspire others to make content and be successful at it if that’s what they want to do. This industry didn’t exist when I was a teenager trying to figure out what to do with my life, and suddenly there are all of these opportunities with social media and I think its fantastic. Carmen: What are some of your favourite projects you’ve been involved in? Patrick: Working with Man Repeller and Bumble and bumble has been awesome.

Carmen: Are there particular places and vibes that you seek out in California for inspiration? Patrick: Laguna Beach and Beverly Hills are probably the most inspiring to me at the moment. I also draw a lot of inspiration from the ideas of California we see in media and online. Carmen: What kind of exciting projects do you have lined up for 2016? Patrick: If everything goes according to plan I will get to work with one of my favourite designers, and a model I’ve looked up to for many years.
