INTERVIEW Jay Briggs

by Carmen Obied

Fashion Designer and Milliner based in London

CARMEN: Your work echoes a fairy-like fantasy with a dark twist - do you often find yourself caught between these two worlds? JAY: You could say that I live part way between reality and fantasy at all times. I think as a designer its important to adapt your life around what it is that inspires you, to keep the creative energy flowing. Taking up the mentality of the character/ person whom you are designing for. I think its this aspect which makes a collection personal, thus making it believable, as you can’t doubt that it has come from your inner soul. CARMEN: From witchcraft and mythological creatures to influences from British history - what is it that draws you in to these particular concepts and inspirations? JAY: Witches and witchcraft has always captivated me, ever since I can remember from childhood to growing up, to adopting the life of a Wiccan for a short period of time. Its the mystery and pre-conceptions of witchcraft which draws me to it, and how the idea of a “witch” has been warped to be a character of evil, from generation to generation.

British History has always been a fascination of mine particularly the monarchy of the plantangent, Tudor and Elizabethan periods, due to the drama, the theatrics and power surrounding the people, and how they transformed Britain into what it is today. I’m drawn to the woman of this period, as all of their lives they were suppressed by men, with only their charm, beauty and enchantment going in their favor, yet it was these women who were the driving forces in changing the shape of the empire. CARMEN: Do you have a specific character or story in mind when you’re creating a new design? JAY: I want people to be scared and intimidated by the woman that I dress. My muse is a powerful and dominant woman. She’s an enchantress with an air of mystery surrounding her. She commands attention yet isn’t an object of sexual desire within men. She knows what she wants out of life and knows exactly how to get it. Shes indestructible and unapologetic for her actions, shes the villain of every fairytale, you could say she my alter ego.

INTERVIEW

by Carmen Obied

CARMEN: You presented your stunning “Melusina” collection during London Fashion Week for the first time, with an unusually creative set! What inspired you to create this set? JAY: I collaborated with the incredible floral designer Yan Skates to create the SS15 “Melusina” set design. I gave him a reference to the vision I had and let him run free with it. The myth of the 14th century water nymph “Melusina” begins with a prince lost in a woodland, who followed the sound of water to discover Melusina bathing there. It was this which was the concept behind the set. I wanted the audience to become “lost” in a woodland, and discover the collection for themselves, taking up the role of the prince, to discover my interpretation of “Melusina” which was the reason I had only one live model.

FashionShift MAGAZINE CARMEN: You often work with interesting, even unusual materials such as beetle wings. What are some of the mediums and materials you most enjoy using, or would like to experiment with? JAY: I really love working with feathers, as I think they posses such beautiful qualities and add a real depth to a garment. What I love the most about them is that they had a life of their own before I gave them a part within my story. I’d like to experiment more, using traditional millinery techniques and materials incorporating them into my own style of work. CARMEN: What helps you get in the zone? Where do you escape for creativity? JAY: There really is nothing like loosing yourself in a book, for me thats the best form of escapism. But it has to be a book, none of this kindle shit, I have to be able to feel and smell the pages, in order to be transported into some forbidden love story of a fifteenth century court. If I need a break from the intensity of London and life as a whole, I go and visit my family back up North. There really is no other place like it, fresh air in your lungs and birds singing in the beautiful greenery all around you, its like a fairytale rehab, where you can be left in peace with only your thoughts for company.

CARMEN: If you could travel to the past, which period would you choose? JAY: It would have to be Elizabethan Britain, with Elizabeth I on the throne in the 1500s, as I believe this was the most exciting period in British history, marking the significant changes of the country, the fashion and the scandalous court life. What I find the most inspiring is the lives of the monarchy, due to the power and influence they had, being seen as the divine and the chosen ones by god, to rule the kingdom, with their sheer power and wealth being translated in their dress. CARMEN: Whats next for you? Can you give us any insight into your latest collection or collaborations? JAY: I’ve just released my new “Ugly Duckling” collection. The collection is based upon the “Ugly Duckling” tale by Hans Christian Andersen in 1844. I believe that the “Ugly duckling” tale is a misunderstood universal myth, its not about becoming who you dream of becoming, its about self-revelation, and becoming who you are. Its about metamorphosis, constantly transforming into better versions of ourselves. I think there are elements of beauty and elegance in the fact that we all evolve and that process is what the collection is based upon. I’m also working on some costumes for a performance at the Wilderness Festival in August, before releasing the new S/S16 collection at September Fashion week, which is currently in its early stages. I’m super excited about this collection as its based on one of the most influential and import Queen consorts England has ever had..... www.jay-briggs.com

10 Ways to Use Essential Oils This Summer “Summertime is all about being care-free, making memories and enjoying the sunshine. Whether you are headed for the beach, a party, a hike or wanting to kick back and relax you can keep the good times rolling by adding Essential Oils into your routine.”

What are Essential Oils?

For Time Spent Outdoors:

Essential Oils is an extracts from plant leaves, flowers, stems, roots or bark that carry its essence in an exceptionally potent form. There are hundreds of ways to use them and incorporate them into daily life for things like disinfecting, mood changing and pain relieving.

1: Insect Repellent: Most bug repellents contain a ton of chemicals including DEET. Avoid the chemicals and make your own repellent by adding a few drops Eucalyptus, Lemongrass and Lavender with distilled water in a spray bottle and apply to your uncovered body parts and your clothes- especially before dusk! If you’re staying in one spot, diffuse these oils in the middle of your circle of friends or make your own room repellent by adding these Essential Oils to mason jars filled with water, lemon slices, fresh osemary and floating tea light candles. 2. Sun Protection: Sunscreens also contain a large amount of chemicals that not only seep into our bodies, but also get heated by the sun, thereby worsening the effects. Make your own using a scent-free, chemical free lotion and add 6-8 drops of Helichrysum, 3-4 drops of Lavender and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. If you have extra sensitive skin and need a higher SPF, include Myrrh and Carrot Seed Oil. 3. Environmental Relief: It’s almost impossible to get away from pollens, trees, flowers, grasses and weeds when we’re doing activities outdoors. If you are prone to sneezing and watery eyes try placing 1-2 drops of Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint in your hand, rub together, cup your hands over your face and inhale. Peppermint diffusion or inhalation is excellent for head tension caused by changes in humidity or barometric pressure. These Essential Oils may help open your sinuses and minimize your need for allergy medication.

Ways to Use Essential Oils: Aromatically: Essential Oils can be inhaled, diffused and used as personal fragrances, room deodorizers, and facial steam tents. Topically: Essential Oils can be applied for massage, pain relief, hot or cold compresses, cleaning, bathing and in personal care products. If you have sensitive skin or want to get the most of your oils, dilute them with carrier oils such as almond oil, avocado oil, olive oil, jojoba oil or fractionated coconut oil. Otherwise, you can apply most of the oils in this article directly to the body. Always do a patch test with 1-2 drops of the oil while waiting about 1-2 hours to be clear of any possible reaction. For children, use caution when choosing Essential Oils, always use a carrier oil and only apply to bottoms of feet. After applying photosensitive Essential Oils like citrus fruits, avoid sun exposure or UV light for 24-48 hours.

For Home Recovery: 4. Insect Bites, Itchy Skin, Minor Cuts and Scrapes: Being active outdoors can bring about minor boo-boos and insect bites. Mix 1-2 drops of Lavender and Melaleuca with a small amount of carrier oil and apply topically to help with itch relief, disinfecting and wound repair. Add a drop of Frankincense either on its own or on top of the others to drive them into the skin and minimize inflammation. 5. Sunburns: If you forget to reapply your natural sunscreen or fall asleep in the sun, there is relief available. In case of a burn, mix 4-5 drops of Lavender and 1-2 drops of Peppermint in a small bottle of natural aloe vera gel and apply as needed. Not only is this combo good for soothing burns but it will also help keep your skin hydrated to minimize severity and duration of a painful burn. 6. Muscle Pain: Muscle and joint soreness or pain can occur after a period of physical activity. Instead of taking advil, try diluting 1-2 drops of Lemongrass, Wintergreen or a Massage Blend in a carrier oil and massage the site of pain. Add 1 drop of Peppermint and do this every few hours for maximum relief. You’ll be ready for your next adventure in no time! 7. Hangovers: A few too many at your friends barbeque or a wild night out can lead to a difficult morning. The last thing we want to do is waste precious summertime daylight by being bed ridden from overindulging. Mix 1 drop of Rosemary, Peppermint or Lemon with a carrier oil and apply to neck and over liver to help detoxify your body and get you out of bed before you sleep your summer away. 8. Relaxation and Sleep: After a busy and eventful weekend, Monday morning seems to sneak up on us. This can become problematic if you can’t seem to make time to unwind or have trouble falling asleep. Mix 1-2 drops of Lavender and/or Vetiver and diffuse or mix with a carrier oil and apply to the bottoms of your feet and your back which will help promote relaxation and restful sleep. A few drops of Lavender can also be used in a warm bath to help you unwind. These easy techniques can help us recover faster from the weekend in order to take on the work week.

For Personal Care: 9. Show Some Skin: Mix 1 drop of Frankincense with a carrier oil or lotion for most skin conditions. Thanks to Citrus oils like Grapefruit, Lemon, Wild Orange and a Citrus Blend can be used to decrease skin imperfections. Mix 3-5 drops of Citrus Oil with 1 drop of Peppermint with 1 Tbs. of carrier oil to help promote lymphatic and circulatory flow through the body. Massage these oils into the skin and brush lightly towards the heart to minimize appearance of Cellulite and Varicose Veins. Apply in the evening and avoid sun exposure for minimum 12 hours. 10. Get Sunkissed Hair: Skip the salon and get natural looking chemical-free highlights by using Essential Oils. Apply 2-3 drops of Lemon and Roman Chamomile to a wide brush and stroke evenly through dry, unwashed hair letting it sit for 15-20 minutes and then shampoo or rinse out. Repeat every 3-4 days until desired colour is reached. Avoid direct contact with your scalp if there’s a chance of sun exposure within 15 hours. Lemon is also good for grease fighting for those with oily hair. If you have overly dry hair, skip Lemon and stick with Roman

Sunk issed Hair

Chamomile. 11. Get The Funk Out: When the sun comes out, the socks come off as we slip into boat shoes, flats, or flip flops. Slipping in and out of our shoes in addition to humidity and sweat can cause our shoes and feet to develop an unpleasant odour. Add 1-2 drops of Melaleuca, Lemon and/or a Protective Blend to a cotton ball and leave in your shoes overnight to absorb the smell. You can also add 1 drop in each shoe and wipe it down with paper towel. No need to throw out your shoes when you’ve got Essential Oils. Bonus! 12. End of Summer Blues: The end of summer marks the beginning of a colder season. Beat the blues by applying 1-2 drops of Wild Orange to the palm of your hands and inhaling. This will help lift your spirits, encouraging you to look on the bright side of what comes after summer-- FALL FASHION! Caution: Always discuss with a trained health care advisor who has experience with Essential Oils before using. If you get essential oil in your eyes, stay away from water as it will drive it in deeper and opt for a carrier oil instead. Use extra caution if you are pregnant or nursing and when choosing Essential Oils children and toddlers. If you have a major health concern, compromised immune system or liver issues, please exercise caution when choosing and using Essential Oils.

By using these Essential Oils, you will not only be targeting their specified uses for summer, but you will also be creating and promoting a healthier lifestyle for yourself and your family. Now that you have all the tools you will need, get out there and enjoy your summer to the fullest!

By Kate Lewington

Tom Wawnik was born in Pland, but spent his teenage years in Germany. He is now based in London, occasionally travels to Bali, Singapore and Australia. He has worked as a professional model in the past, making invaluable industry contacts around the world.

Talented, ambitious with a mind full of unique ideas... Tom now puts himself behind the camera in pursuit of a career in portrait and fashion photography. He is an internationally published photographer in over 20 different magazines. His work ranges from campaign & lookbook shoots, advertisements, editorials, model setcards, portraits to fashion events. Working mainly as a freelance photographer, organising photo shoots (styling the models and set design), he has achieved great personal success in a short period of time. He is always undertaking new projects, collaborating with an array of make-up artists, fashion designers, international models and also occasionally scouting new talents for international agencies. KATE: During your modelling days what did you enjoy most/ least about being in front of the camera? TOM: I think travelling and seeing the world was the most I enjoyed as a model, and meeting creative people. But somehow modeling was never enough for me, I always thought I could do more than that. And I figured out, modeling is not really something I saw myself doing for a long period of my life, not something, I really enjoyed doing everyday. But it was a great entry, to get into photography. And I am very thankful for that. KATE: When or how did you decide to jump behind the camera instead? TOM: Always on shoots as a model I had a lot of crazy and creative ideas that I wanted to realize, but the photographers mostly weren’t cooperative and didn’t like my ideas. I had a lot of funny imagination on the set, but I always got from the team a response like: “this is too crazy, this looks too gay” etc. etc. Eventually during my 2 years stay in Australia, I decided to just change my position and go behind the camera instead of being in front of it. I had so many ideas in my head I wanted to capture in my photography. And it seemed finally I found a way to express myself. In a much better way as I could even achieve as a model. So, during my modeling time I started to ask photographers questions about photography and lighting. When I felt ready, I spent all my money on a good camera and started to shoot on my own. I basically spent all my money almost literally, and was living in a hostel, sharing a room with a lot of other people in Sydney. A lot of friends of mine and people I knew didn’t understand me in this period. www.tomwawnik.com

FashionShift MAGAZINE

KATE: Are you particular in your methods of shooting or do you take a more organic approach? TOM: I have some guidelines in my head automatically, but also work very spontaneously, and like to experiment whenever the time allows me on the shoot. KATE: How do you get things just right or know when you’re satisfied with a shoot? KATE: You’re known for your attention to detail, what do you think are key factors to a successful shoot? TOM: Thank you very much, I love to hear that. Because its true, I really pay a lot of attention to details and small things on set. And nice to know that other people see this in my pictures. I am always very close working with the whole team, and try to communicate what I want. I love to do the creative direction beside photography. I am sometimes even styling my shoots on my own, and do the whole set design. There are a few things, which make a successful shoot for me. But when it comes to shooting people – I love the intention in the eyes and strong impression in the face, and good lighting of course. I love my pictures to be unnatural and strong. Beside that, I think I work individually. Since my modeling career, I know how the models feel in front of the camera; I know how to communicate with them to make them relax for a shoot. I also have mostly good ideas beforehand what kind of pose I want to see. It often feels like I’m sculpting a scene. It means, Its not unusual that I ask the model, if I can touch her and pose her the way I want it, and the way I want to see the model in my imagination. A model might be sometimes thinking I’m a weirdo, but I don’t really care, as long as the end result is flawless.

www.tomwawnik.com

TOM: I am never 100% satisfied; there is always something I would like it to be done better in the end, even on the shooting day. But because there is not enough time, I have to calm down, and be satisfied with what I am doing. Especially when it comes to editorial work, or testing. Sometimes I need a bit longer time to let reflect on my work, and it can happen I love some shoots much better later on, than on the shooting day. Sorry, I can’t answer this question better, as I am never really satisfied with my work. KATE: Given your experience, what is the most challenging aspect of being a model/photographer? TOM: Most challenging as a model is to look always flawless, have a healthy lifestyle, go to the gym (especially as a male model). To get told by everyone what to do, even when you think it’s stupid (that was the most challenging part for me, personally). As a photographer the most challenging thing is to be true to yourself and your creativity, never forget to experiment and try out new things. Also to have still a low ego after years of work can be challenging too. The best, amazing photographers out there, are very down to earth people, very humble and amazing personalities. KATE: How would you identify the differences between working in fashion in London and countries like Bali or Australia? TOM: There are big differences. Well, London is a fashion metropolis. It means, when I don’t like a model agency or a make up artist, no big drama. There are a lot of other people I can choose to work with in London. In Bali or Australia the market is, of course, much smaller, but still very interesting for me. It’s also easier to get a bad reputation when you work badly, because it makes around in the industry very quick. The industry is very small you are working in. But somehow I prefer it much to London.

FashionShift MAGAZINE “Australia, is the country where I started to photograph. I just love Australia and the fashion sense. The people don’t take themselves too seriously and are always open-minded and happy to help. Sometimes when you work with certain people in London, they think they are more important than a nurse or doctor. I find it funny, though.”

www.tomwawnik.com

FashionShift MAGAZINE

KATE: As a frequent flyer you must be used to working with a variety of people, how do you bridge the cultural or language gaps? TOM: I know it sounds really weird now for people, who work with me, but I am actually a bit introvert. But somehow with my camera in my hand, I am pulling out a different kind of personality. I am very hyperactive when I am shooting, talking a lot and make everyone laugh. I want the people, especially the models, feel comfortable with me. I never have any problems with new people, wherever around the globe, I love it, and it’s interesting for me to meet new people. We all have something in common, we are working in a creative industry, and I love to be surrounded by creative people. No matter what country, what skin colour, what religion, or their gender etc. KATE: Do you enjoy working in more natural (outdoor) or artificial (urban) environments? TOM: Hm, that’s a good question. I think the thing about my photography is, I always mix things together, which normally people wouldn’t mix or which are not typical; the same with locations. I love to mix nature with artificial and other way around. I love both in the same way. But have to admit, I always prefer to shoot somewhere on location, outdoors, instead of in a studio. KATE: You clearly have a keen eye for this job, where do you see yourself in the near future? Any projects or collaborations to speak of? TOM: Thank you very much. At the moment I love just to travel and meet other creative people and get inspired. I have big aims in further future. In the near future, I just want to shoot more models from different ethnicities. I shot recently a plus size Model - Laura Wells, and I am very interested in shooting some more with different types of models. I believe, calling “plus size” or “oversize” models is a bit weird, but that’s another story…. Beside that I would love to work with a top model in Australia, her Name is Samantha Harris, she is a half aboriginal model. I am very obsessed with her at the moment. I met her at the fashion week in Sydney beginning of this year. And maybe I can shoot Naomi Campbell soon...

India

The Golden Triangle

I

ndia has a colourful rhythm, it has a repetitive sultriness, and it has a ceaseless, burning smell of cheap petrol and dirty smog that clings to your skin. Yet, she has an effortless charm that infiltrates your memories and leaves you wanting more. The country’s capital, Delhi, is a metropolitan maze of stray dogs, chai tea stalls and delicate Indian silks. There’s something quite energising about the way that the capitals pulse runs through your veins as you experience the daily commute by tuktuk. Meandering between the medieval lanes of the Old Town, it is impossible to not find yourself either lost, or struggling to not get run over by the sheer chaos. Delhi is made up of seven cities that can be conveniently accessed by the metro. With the trains made up of separate carriages for women, you begin to feel the unavoidable presence of the gender divide. The epitome of Mughal Delhi stands at the foot of the Red Fort, founded by Shah Jahan between 1638 and 1648. It became the residence for the Mughal emperor for nearly two hundred years. The red sandstone architecture is incredibly striking, with its garden design influencing many other regions throughout India including, Rajasthan, Punjab and Kashmir.

The Gol den Triangle

“The Golden Triangle is a rewarding experience for any traveller.”

Delhi provides a gateway to the well-travelled Golden Triangle. The tourist circuit consists of the three most travelled cities of the countries northwest; Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. If Delhi is the metropolitan maze, Agra is the beholder of the most precious architectural jewel; The Taj Mahal. To any hopeless romantic the story of the Taj Mahal is a beautiful one. Commissioned in 1632 by the same Mughal emperor of the Red Fort, Shah Jahan, it was made to house the tomb of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The domed marbled mausoleum stands proud amid the banks of the Yamuna River, and has become the focal attraction of the country. The pink city of Jaipur is the home to one of the city’s greatest attractions, The Amer Fort. Built in 1592 by Raja Man Singh, it is placed effortlessly on the edges of the Maotha Lake and in the hills of the Cheel ka Teela- or the ‘Hill of Eagles’. The temple’s name directly translates to ‘the head jewel of the idol of Lord Vishnu’ and echoes the subcontinent’s history throughout the walls and cobbled paths. In the light of dusk the palace glows like an ember and becomes a moment of peaceful escapism from the hectic foothills of the city. The Golden Triangle is a rewarding experience for any traveller. It marks a well-connected selection of some of India’s most spectacular sites, and can be easily reached by the famous rail network. If the coloniser rewarded India with anything, it was the railway system, now considered the third largest rail network in the world. The intricate network spans every inch of the subcontinent, leaving a plethora of destinations to be unraveled; The Golden Triangle is best as ever a good place to begin.
