Facts To Help You Understand

Food Allergies and Sensitivities by Christina Rosso

For many of us, gas, bloating and weight gain have been symptoms we have come to accept without questioning the cause. In order to be healthy from inside out, it is important to consider the impact that foods - even HEALTHY foods - can have on our bodies. This article will explain what food sensitivities are, the most common culprits and what to do about them. By following my tips you will be able to boost your immune system, reduce many unwanted symptoms and achieve your health and weight goals faster than ever! 1. FOOD ALLERGIES AND FOOD SENSITIVITIES ARE NOT THE SAME THING.

True food allergies are associated with an immunological response (IgE) which causes a moderate to severe or potentially life threatening anaphylactic reaction. This allergic response usually occurs within 2 minutes to 2 hours upon exposure by consuming, inhaling or having physical contact with the offending food. If the food allergies are severe enough, the person exposed must receive immediate medical attention. Food sensitivities or intolerances cause a less intense reaction in the body that is not life threatening. The response usually occurs within 12 to 28 hours upon consumption of the offending food. Often times, but not always, they elicit an immunological response (IgG) that releases inflammation-causing chemicals, which can contribute to a variety of diseases and health conditions.

2. THERE ARE MANY COMMON FOOD TRIGGERS THAT WE CONSUME ON A DAILY BASIS.

Common food allergy triggers include milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, fish, shellfish, wheat, soy and some fruits and vegetables. Common food sensitivity triggers are eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish/ shellfish, soy, wheat, gluten/gliadin, sugar, citrus fruits, chocolate, yeast, chlorine or fluoride in tap water, nightshade vegetables, food additives, coffee, corn, MSG, and dairy (milk, yogurt, cheese, and butter). Although these are the most common foods, it is possible to become sensitive to any food.

3. THERE ARE MANY SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATED WITH FOOD ALLERGIES AND SENSITIVITIES. Food Allergies: Mild to moderate symptoms include reddening or itching of the skin, hives and welts, tingling in mouth, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, swelling of face, lips and eyes. Severe symptoms include wheezing or excessive coughing, difficulty breathing, swelling tongue or throat, tightness of the throat, and excessive dizziness.

Food Sensitivities: General Symptoms include weight gain, difficulty losing weight, water retention, dark or blue under eyes, puffy eyes, cellulite, fatigue after meals or in morning, muscle or joint pain/stiffness, arthritis, headaches, migraines, inability to concentrate, high blood pressure, heart palpitations or general malaise. Digestive symptoms include gas, bloating, abdominal cramps and pain, constipation, heartburn, acid reflux, loose stools, diarrhea, IBS and IBD. Sinus and immune related symptoms include sinus congestion, runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, post-nasal drip, itchy ears, ear congestion, chronic ear infections/swimmer’s ear, itchy mouth, seasonal allergies, hay fever and asthma. Symptoms of psoriasis, acne, eczema, hives, welts, itchy skin, and red/ irritated skin are often coupled with food sensitivities. Other symptoms that can also be associated are irritability, anxiety, depression, food cravings, insomnia, excessive hunger or dehydration.

4. CHILDREN CAN EXPERIENCE FOOD SENSITIVITIES FROM A YOUNG AGE.

Adults and children can experience similar symptoms that have already been mentioned. Symptoms in children with food sensitivities include colic, constipation, “growing pains”, excessive stomach pain and nausea, skin irritations, hyperactivity, mood swings, bedwetting, inability to concentrate, headaches and migraines. A breastfed child can be affected by what the mother is consuming and often changing the foods in the diet of the mother may eliminate most or all symptoms of the child.

5. YOUR PET CAN BE AFFECTED BY FOOD SENSITIVITIES.

The most common pet food triggers are beef, lamb, chicken, seafood, corn, soy, dairy products and wheat gluten. Check the ingredients in your pet’s food and opt for a grain-free option with a different source of protein if you notice symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea or loose stools, flatulence, inflamed skin, chronic ear problems, frequent scratching and hair loss.

FashionShift MAGAZINE 6. THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO GET TESTED IF YOU SUSPECT A FOOD ALLERGY OR SENSITIVITY.

Food allergy IgE antibodies can be tested through blood or skin scratch tests through your medical professional. If you notice any related symptoms, seek a professional for proper testing and avoid the potential trigger. If you believe that you have a severe reaction to gluten or celiac disease your medical professional may recommend several blood tests. For immunological food sensitivities, an IgG test can be done through your holistic health practitioner through blood testing. IgG testing does not detect non-immune food reactions and reactions to foods that have not been consumed in a while. It also will not test for chemicals naturally present in food and artificial additives. Applied kinesiology or muscle testing can be done to detect any dissonance to a specific food that would not appear on the IgG test. A dissonance is detected if the food’s energetic property creates a weakness in the isolated part of the body that is being tested. Food elimination diet is a great do it yourself method. Begin with 2-3 suspect foods and eliminate them for 10 to 14 days. Reintroduce the foods one at a time for 2-3 days each. This will allow you to feel if the food is causing symptoms or if it is safe to enjoy. Food journaling can help you see a correlation between foods eaten and the occurrence unwanted symptoms. Create a journal for a minimum of 1 week taking note of everything eaten, mood changes, and symptoms that occurred along with specific times of day. Upon persistent symptoms and negative results to testing, a colonoscopy and biopsy may be ordered by a qualified gastroenterologist to rule out any other possible issues.

7. IT IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND WHAT TO DO IF A REACTION OCCURS.

Treatment upon exposure to a severe food allergy is with an EpiPen® or Anapen® followed by a visit to a medical doctor or hospital. For a mild or moderate reaction, some people will take an over-the-counter antihistamine, although it is recommended to stay within specific doses and to only consume when needed. Tapping can minimize symptoms to sensitivities-often times within minutes! The tapping points are based on meridian points of Traditional Chinese Medicine. This is a fast, safe and effective method especially for young children.

8. THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO DEVELOP REACTIONS TO FOODS.

Consuming the same foods everyday can deplete enzymes in the body, thus creating maldigestion, malabsorption and an inability to tolerate the food. Negative emotional experiences or stressors can have a great affect on our association with certain foods. A bad experience with a food like having food poisoning can create food sensitivities. Stomach acid is depleted naturally the older we get, but can also decrease significantly during high stress events which can minimize the body’s ability to tolerate certain foods. Inflammation of the gut lining often referred to as “Leaky Gut Syndrome” can be caused by food allergies, certain drugs, stress and alcohol. This allows food particles to penetrate through the lining of the gut, which triggers the body’s IgG response. Dysbiosis or systemic infections such as parasites, fungi or yeast (Candida Albicans) can decrease the body’s immune system function and lead to food sensitivities. This may have been acquired from tainted food or drinks at a tropical location or due to an overgrowth following antibiotic use.

9. FOODS ARE NOT THE ONLY TRIGGER.

Pollens, plants, dust, mold, animal fur or animal dander can induce symptoms similar to food sensitivities. Some symptoms can be triggered by electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) from cell phones, WIFI, and other electronics. Stress and other emotions can also create symptoms previously discussed.

10. THERE ARE METHODS THAT MAY HELP PREVENT AND REDUCE FOOD SENSITIVITIES.

Having a healthy, balanced diet high in nutrients and low in sugars, simple carbohydrates and chemicals is the best way to minimize your susceptibility to food sensitivities. Eating while calm, chewing food completely and avoiding drinking with meals can drastically minimize a symptom of food sensitivity due to the increase amount of enzymes, stomach acid and blood flow in the digestive tract. Yoga and meditation can decrease stress-induced sensitivities. Under the care of a qualified health care practitioner, supplementing with digestive enzymes, digestive bitters and/or betaine HCL, if needed, can help the body break down and digest offending foods. An improvement can be seen within a few weeks of completely avoiding the offending food. Removing foods for 3-6 months can minimize the reactive response, but a longer period of time may be necessary. Withdrawal symptoms including headaches, fatigue, irritability and hunger may occur for the first 2-3 days of eliminating the food so be sure to drink lots of water throughout the day. Ensuring that you do not eat the same food everyday is important, rotation diets can help with that. Rotating a food every 2-3 days can prevent further sensitivities and may help reduce symptoms from a current sensitivity. Bio Electric Acupressure is an energy-based practice that uses a state-of-the-art (non-invasive, pain-free) device to transmit a low electric frequency directly onto various acupressure points. This process allows the body to reach a state of homeostasis and, in most cases, will lead to resonance with the determined foods. A number of sessions may be needed, dependent upon several factors. Look for a BPR or BIE practitioner in your area. If the sensitivity is related to a systemic infection it is important to work with a qualified holistic practitioner to begin a 30-90 day cleanse. They will first detect the culprit and then choose a protocol with specific products and nutrition guidelines to help eliminate the infection. Once this is done, it will help decrease or eliminate food sensitivities and help you achieve overall health.
