Letter from the Editor Welcome to the Anniversary issue of Fashion Shift Magazine. It’s been a year since the launch of our first issue, and I must admit, we could not have made it without any of the incredible contributions we’ve received. Throughout the production process, we have connected with an impressive number of inspiring, like-minded creatives from around the world. Fashion Shift has already reached half of the globe - Singapore, USA, Dubai, Italy, Russia, Poland, Germany, France, Canada, Sweden, The Netherlands, United Kingdom and many more countries… I’m so proud to be able to create the opportunities for work exposure of the very talented individuals and watch the magazine progress, expand and improve with every issue. In our second year, we intend to feature more articles on travel, beauty tips, diet and healthy lifestyle advice. Also, we will explore the world of art and passion and I’d like to invite you all to contribute your creations, get involved and become a part of the team.

Eating is second nature to us, but there are many learned habits that decrease our ability to digest which can impact many other areas of our overall health and well-being. Here are some of the habits that aren’t always discussed but I feel are necessary to change for optimal health. www.facebook.com/rxfornutrition

1. Eating on the go We are all busy, and all have places to go and people to see. One thing we are neglecting is ourselves by not giving ourselves ample time to eat and properly digest a meal. I recommend sitting down and eating and giving yourself at least 20-30 minutes to eat. Take a few deep breaths before eating and keep your electronics off. Enjoy the taste, texture, smell and appearance of your food. Staying relaxed while eating will improve digestion and absorption of food, allow us to feel full and give us a well needed break from our sometimes hectic lives.

2. Drinking with meals It is okay to sip on a beverage here and there with a meal but having over 250ml during the course of a meal is not ideal. When we intake too much liquid during a meal, it dilutes the acid in our stomach and the digestive enzymes that are both needed to break down our food. If you feel the need to chug a glass of water in the middle of a meal, it is probably because you are dehydrated and have not been drinking enough throughout the day. It is best to drink 1-2 glasses of water up to 20 min before a meal so that it gives your body the ability to process the water before moving onto a solid meal.

3. “Inhaling” our food This is a habit that sometimes falls under eating on the go, but can also be an everyday occurrence even if we are sitting down to a quiet meal. It is important that we eat slow and chew our food as much as possible. The mouth releases enzymes mostly for breaking down carbohydrates and cues other organs to release their enzymes. If these enzymes are not released it could hinder the way we digest and absorb our food. More importantly, if large chunks of food get to our stomach, our body has to work so much harder in order to break it down. Remember, our stomachs don’t have teeth, so it is important to chew our food to a paste- give it a try and feel the difference.

4. Over-stimulating the body before and during meals Caffeine, nicotine, exercising and self-induced stress can put our bodies into the age old state of “fight or flight” where circulation surges to the extremities and away from the digestive process. This means that digestion halts anytime we smoke, drink coffee, exercise or are internally stressed. When the body is stressed, it decreases the amount of acid produced by the stomach which is meant to break down food and kill any pathogens. A very common misconception is that caffeine and nicotine “help” have a bowel movement. This is actually a bad thing for the body as these substances cause the body to become overly acidic and eject the food from the body before it is able to properly digest. For post-workout, it is better to either wait 30-60 minutes for the heart rate to decrease, or have a liquid meal.

5. Consuming rancid fats When we use oils that have a lower smoke point than the temperature they are actually being heated to, we are damaging the oils, creating toxic fumes and free radicals that can damage our lungs, arteries and many other cells in the body. This is one of the reasons that fried foods are so unhealthy as the oils are either old and/or have been heated to a temperature beyond their smoking points. When cooking, avoid deep frying and use products that contain a lot of saturated fat such as organic butter, coconut oil or avocado oil. Save the olive oil, walnut oil, sesame oils for sautéing at low temperatures or as toppings/ dressings for foods. On a related side note: keep all nuts and seeds in the fridge and store oils in a tightly sealed container around room temperature or lower. These are a few tips that not many people are aware of but can make a huge impact on symptoms related mainly to digestion, but also all around health. By changing these habits you may notice less bloating, gas, indigestion, stomach aches, and fatigue after meals. You may also notice more energy, better circulation and a more relaxed demeanor. It’s time that we pay more attention to the basic principles of eating and become more aware of our bodies as a whole.

GARY KNIGHTS Surf Photographer based in the South Coast of England www.garyknights.net facebook.com/garyknightsphotgrapher

G

ary has been building his portfolio for over 15 years. He is an inpirational artist, whose work captures his passion for surfing and the magical power of the ocean and its waves. Being in the water, catching the perfect wave has been Gary’s comfort zone, which allowed him to photograph the magical moments of sunsets, mysterious ways of the ocean’s behaviour and surfers’ lifestyle. His work has been published in the UK’s leading surf magazines, newspapers and European surf guides. “My first memory of Surf Photography was around about the age of 11. I remember sitting on the top of the cliffs at Fistral Beach, Nequay with my Dad’s set of binoculars and an old automatic 35mm film camera. I managed to capture some great shots of the surfers even if they were heavily vignetted! They were more arty than a good capture of a surfer, although technically not the start of my passion in photography; it was the first time I took a surfing picture, being into art at an early age I think photography was a natural progression for me. Moving on to my early twenties I went on a surf trip to Fuertuventura in the Canary Islands with a group of friends mainly consisting of bodyboarders. We surfed a place near Cotilo Beach. It was a really shallow reef that was hard to surf on a surfboard but was ideal for bodyboards. My friend had a waterproof Canon - sure shot, I paddled out and took photos diving under the heavy reef break waves and captured some great images of my mates, finding it as fun as surfing itself.

The ART of Surf Photography

FashionShift MAGAZINE

www.garyknights.net facebook.com/garyknightsphotgrapher

Our trip also co-incided with a photo shoot that was taking place at the same surf spot. We were joined by a few good British surfers and a top surf shooter Alex Williams. They were getting pictures for Wavelength Magazine. Between the waves breaking I started talking to him about photography and magazine work. I found him really inspiring and it planted the seed that a few months later took hold and got me saving for my first SLR camera, the rest is history as the saying goes….

I found the whole process very satisfying; firstly getting my 35mm transparency film developed, holding the files up to the light and seeing the images for the first time then choosing some to submit to the magazine to hopefully get some good feedback, and then wait until the new edition hits the shelf to see if you have any in there! Such a good feeling when you get sent one through the post, then even better seeing it in all the surfshops and news agents even in foreign countries.

I started sending my work into CARVE - Surf Magazine and slowly started getting images published. I built up a good rapour with them and became the only photographer in the Dorset area to get regular photos published every time there were good waves. I also begun travelling further afield and made regular trips to Europe following the Professional surfing world tour capturing the world’s best surfers.

Brought up on Film I reluctantly made the jump to digital but after a short time grew to love the flexibility that it allowed my photography to develop. My style seems to be changing and I am really starting to enjoy the different avenues I’m going down, both in surf photography and also lifestyle photography. A selection of my photographs, have been incorporated in two T-Shirt designs by surf brand - Animal for their Autumn collection, so I’m very excited and looking forward to seeing them hit the shops!”

WINTER BEAUTY SURVIVAL

www.elbievaneeden.com www.facebook.com/ElbieMUAHair

Feeling a bit meh about the weather? Lusting after a bit more sun? Spent a bit too long scouring summer

holiday deals during your lunch hour? Your body is feeling it too!! Winter wreaks havoc on your skin and hair, with central heating, hot showers, dry air and blustery winds being the worst culprits. Here are a few tricks to help you feel a bit more alive in the meantime. Be strong. Summer will come.

SKIN

MAKE-UP

Noticed a green, scaly monster staring back Pale might be interesting – pasty sure is not. at you in your bathroom mirror? Exfoliate Now I’m not an advocate in looking like with a 2-in-1 facemask such as you’ve fallen off the back of a maple syrup Dermalogica’s Gentle Cream Exfoliant to truck, but a bit of subtle brightening and remove all those dead skin cells bronzing could make a world of difference! whilst leaving You’ll want your make-up to have a bit more your skin a lot more radiant. of a glow, your eyes to look awake, and your Serums, skin oils, richer creams – now cheeks and lips to have more would be the time to start using these. colour to them. I love using La Roche Posay Anti-Redness Choose a foundation that has a bit more Serum (farewell ruddy cheeks!), Nuxe radiance to it to combat sallow skin, use Huile Prodigieuse Dry Oil (also good under eye brighteners (Hello YSL Touche for hair!), and Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Eclat!) for a quick pick me up, curl your Cream as a nighttime treat. lashes for a more open-eyed look, and add Exfoliate your lips with a lip scrub to a sheer 2-in-1 tint to your lips and cheeks remove dead skin, then keep it supple and (I really like Stila’s Convertible Colours for moisturized with a rich lip balm. both lips and cheeks). I recommend either Lucas Pawpaw ointment or Nuxe Reve de Miel for baby soft lips.

HAIR Have an in-salon deep conditioning treatment every 6 – 8 weeks to smooth and moisturise your hair. There are different formulations for different hairtypes and needs, and with products such as the Redken Chemistry System, your hairstylist could create a custom-made treatment for your tresses. Top it up with weekly moisturizing masks. For a bit more shine, consider having a colour gloss done. This is a no-damage, no ammonia demi permanent colour that would add a lot more life to your hair. Always use heat protection, whether you blowdry, straighten, or tong your hair. And while we’re covering that – try to use less heat on your hair full stop!

So to sum it up – exfoliate, hydrate, protect and glow. And yes, now it’s time to book that holiday. www.elbievaneeden.com | www.facebook.com/ElbieMUAHair

“...why can we get so close yet still feel so far from each other? Seems like our grip on reality is shifting. I look towards deeper connection between two people for much of my inspiration and I was greatly influenced by how it personally connected with me. Love, desire, sexual pleasure, pain and sadness inherent to relationships: all body language is here at its peak. Frozen in time, capturing these lovers is both an elegant eroticism and discussing philosophical ideas such as society, identity and equality. - Indrek Galetin
