INTERVIEW
W
STACEY O’KEEFFE
ith a desire to create the perfect dress that will suit all shapes and sizes, Sacha Drake has built her fashion empire based on designing for the woman with curves.
In this exclusive and insightful interview, Sacha reveals her style tips, talks about the Ultimate Black Dress and why every woman needs a timeless number that will fill her heart with joy. The Sacha Drake Label came from your desire to find the perfect dress that flatters. Why do you think there is gap in the market place that doesn't cater for women of various shapes and sizes?
8
It's hard to find clothes that work across different shapes and sizes. It takes a huge level of commitment from the design team to create garments that genuinely fit and flatter. We do approximately 10 fittings and use different size fit models to achieve this result, which takes time and money. A lot of people don't invest in this as their product is based on price.
What are three style staples that should be found in every wardrobe? 1. Perfect LBD for all occasions – work and play. 2. A great pair of pants that fit you beautifully that also can go from day to night and work to play. 3. Something that makes you smile and makes you feel happy when you wear it – a piece that fills your heart with joy when you look at it and wear it. The Ultimate Black Dress offers unlimited possibilities and can be worn over 20 ways. Why is this a must for every wardrobe? It's a great investment piece that transforms with the needs of your life for example, travel, going to a cocktail party, a weekend away at the beach, or a date night dress – it even transforms into a skirt too! It meets the demands of our busy lives. What's one flattering style available from Sacha Drake that will suit every body shape and style? This is a really hard choice to make out of all of my garments, which strive to achieve every size and shape. I would have to say the Grecian Convertible Dress as it can go from strapless, to bra-friendly and offers arm coverage ways to wear it. The pleated fabric is very flattering – it really does transcend ages and body shapes – you really can wear it your way!
What are three styling tips everyone woman should know? 1. It's not about your body it's about your face! Primarily wear garments that make people look at your face. 2. Create the illusion of a waist through great jackets or garments that are shaped at the waistline but not necessarily tight. 3. Choose a hem length that makes you feel young but is appropriate for your age. For example, if you have good legs, you could wear a shorter skirt whereas some may wear them with tights or leggings. What's the trick to looking and feeling great? Dressing to accentuate the parts of your body you like and feel proud of and softly camouflaging the bits that you don't.
FIVE FAST FACTS: Favourite thing about being a designer? Forgetting people's names and using the word “darling instead! (jokes!) Biggest splurge? A beautiful painting I bought for my 40th birthday. The artist actually went on to create the amazing body paint work in Goyte's video 'Somebody I Used to Know'. Favourite thing about being a mum? Having bright, happy, healthy, shiny kids that keep you young and keep you laughing. What's one thing you can't live without? Now that I've just recently discovered it, the bacon and maple flavoured popcorn from Brewhouse Brisbane in West End. What's next for Sacha Drake? Increasing our international exposure and to keep designing.

FASHION WEEK HIGHLIGHT
14
When her career took off, Marilyn passed on the Hollywood party circuit. She enrolled for night classes at UCLA. A voracious reader, she left behind a 400 book library of titles by the likes of John Milton, Albert Einstein and Fyodor Dostoevsky. She wrote too, elegant poems, trenchant observations and poignant memoirs, in which she confided 'there were days or weeks when I wanted only occasional company to bury myself in reading'. Marilyn's intelligence shows through in the pictures that George Barris took at the beach in 1962. One shows her wearing only a well-worn masculine Norwegian cardigan. She pulls it tightly round her as she splashes in the ocean, head thrown back in laughter, hair windswept. Another shows her on the sand, swaddled in a much washed camel blanket.
Max Mara Fall-Winter 2015/2016 imagines a wardrobe as light and soft as that blanket, as comforting and familiar as that cardigan. The collection's signature coats are worn seductively with the allure of luxurious beach wraps. Bomber jackets, overcoats, peacoats, duffels, sweatshirts; Marilyn's "me time" menswear classics are reinvented in camel hair, cashmere, alpaca and quilted silk. So too are her signature slip dresses, bustiers and pencil skirts. Silhouettes are shrunken or maximised.
Camel, sand, casha, ivory; luminous colours which recall that famous shoot on the beach. Sun bleached, powdery pinks, yellows, greens and blues for feather-light cashmere knits, fleecy tweeds, flocculent alpacas and mink which some- times peeps from the hem of a coat. The Hollywood bag in sleek pony or calfskin with its elegant signature clasp gives discrete glamour - the newest version is worn like a backpack. Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.' Marilyn famously joked, so naturally there are high heeled pumps in ponyskin and glitter. But there are also bookish tassel loafers. Marilyn in ponyskin loafers and pastel reading glasses; a vision which is brainy, sexy and modern. www.maxmara.com

BEAUTY TIPS
ENDOTA SPA
REVEALS THE BEAUTY SECRETS YOU NEED TO KNOW
A
re you ready to know the secrets to flawless and gorgeous skin? We sat down with Fortitude Valley's Endota Spa Manager, Elaine Craig to talk skin concerns, myths and anti aging tips. Endota Spa is known for offering an excellent beauty service in a relaxed environment. Could you tell us a little bit more behind Endota's philosophy? At Endota Spa we believe that wellness is for everyone and our day spa treatments help others embrace the feeling of this and relaxation. With Australian sourced natural ingredients and a soothing and result driven range of treatments - the surroundings at Endota are a pampering and down to earth heaven. It's the perfect place for a wax or an all day spa treatment. Breakouts and problematic skin are a major concern for women. What advice would you give them to help control this issue? This can be very frustrating for women and prevention starts with clean skin. So always double cleanse before bed. The first cleanse removes make up, dirt and left over products on the skin. Whereas the second cleanse treats the skin. Cleansing twice also ensures that the skin utilises any of the products applied to aid in fixing breakouts or concerns more rapidly. Two other important tips would be to increase your water intake and stress less. At Endota Spa we have some amazing skin products to help with minimising break outs and clearing them up quickly.

What's the biggest skincare myth? Rumour: Botox can prevent wrinkles! Theoretically, yes. But no long term studies support this claim. If you relax the muscles that continually contract, you'll see less creases over time. As botox wears off the muscle that has not been continually contracted, the muscle will have lost its strength, collagen and elastin resulting in more creases and fine lines! Other strategies, like using sunscreen and keeping proper skin care products are more reliable and certainly less expensive options for fending off wrinkles. What are the three worst things a woman can do to her skin? 1. Pick at their blemishes. 2. Use products that aren't suitable for them. 3. Not protect themselves from the harsh UV rays we have here in Australia What are your top two tips to prevent aging? Hydration and SPF, oh and Exfoliation, yes I have three!. I call them the trifecta of skin health. All are just as important as each other, because if you don't exfoliate when you hydrate, the hydration won't get to where it needs to be because there is a dead skin buildup, and if you, don't wear SPF your skin will produce an extra barrier (pigmentation, thickened skin) to protect itself and that results in the hydration not going to where it's needed. Any final words on skincare wisdom? Make sure you do your research and find a passionate therapist you can turn to for the right answers and the results you deserve.

AURORA BOREALIS C O L L E C T I O N
Papas & Pace 2014 Hair Expo Colour Technician of the Year - Winning Collection

www.papasandpace.com
This collection began at one point - the intersection between cutting and colour. An organic fusion of evocative tones, and sharp, technical cutting, creating an aesthetic that is both forward-thinking and stylistically exciting. The collection echoes the breath-taking natural light display produced when charged atomic particles collide in our atmosphere. It highlights precision cutting and styling, enhanced by strong colour with a myriad of reflections and subtle nuances. By starting from a place of exploration, Aurora Borealis is a series that draws on the beauty of nature to create an ethereal, cutting-edge glamour.
The bright dancing lights of the 'Aurora Borealis' or 'Northern Lights' are collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere. The lights are seen above the magnetic poles of the northern – 'Aurora Borealis' – and southern – 'Aurora Australis' – hemispheres. The Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights was named after the Roman goddess of dawn – Aurora – and the Greek name for the north wind – Boreas.
A muted backdrop has been used so the observer is directed to the three chosen aspects of hair, make up and lighting. As a result of the stimulus, they have been able to marry the colour work with the cut designs. The use of light angled creates various contoured beams (adding layers) and the focus spotlight enhances the beauty of the metallic made-up faces (creating mood and depth.) Using light, dark and bright tones has allowed me to produce the flashes of glow reminiscent of the bright dancing lights of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights.

DELICIOUS DESTINATION
the
Greenwood Hotel
S
ydney institution, The Greenwood Hotel, has undergone a complete overhaul - a dramatic new vision for one of the city's most inspired hotel venues.
The grand Greenwood Hotel was built in 1878, originally as a church and later also used as a school. In 1992 it was bought and turned into a pub, soon becoming one of the North side's most talked about venues. In late 2014, Sydney hotelier Nick Wills of The Balmain Pub Group purchased The Greenwood Hotel with a vision. After more than 20 years, the once spectacular venue was in need of some love. Having worked at the pub whilst a university some 20 years prior, Nick was determined to recreate The Greenwood Hotel and make it the superb venue he knew it could be. The Greenwood Hotel has since undergone a complete transformation and refresh to bring it up to the discerning standards of the new Sydney Hotel scene. The space has undergone a dramatic overhaul with major renovations and completely new dĂŠcor throughout. 40

The new look Greenwood Hotel is brighter and more spacious, giving this glorious piece of Sydney architecture the character, charm and atmosphere it deserves. The Greenwood Hotel is Sydney's new go-to destination for modern pub favourites. The fresh menu includes Field Mushroom & Pine nut Arancini w Gremolata & Aioli, Salmon Ceviche w Avocado & Crispy Tortilla, Char-grilled Salmon w Fennel, Orange, Green Olive & Baby Kale & Kipfler Potatoes and the Pig & Fig Parma Ham, Gorgonzola, Rocket, Fig & Vincotto pizza. With plenty of share dishes, huge selection of gourmet pizzas and a hearty selection of mains, The Greenwood Hotel's new menu hits the spot. The Greenwood Hotel's varied and unique line-up of weekly events, including the hilarious Tranny Bingo, a 2 for 1 pizza night, comprehensive functions packages and plans for a host of live music and events to come has ensured the pub is once again buzzing as the destination on the North Shore. The exciting new look and direction for The Greenwood Hotel has created quite a stir, rather fitting for a destination that is once again living up to its enormous potential.
