It's not often that a retail brand can be identified solely through its trademark colours, yet for Sportsgirl it is something that the brand is renowned for. For almost 8 decades Sportsgirl has made a major impact within the Australian retail market, being the one-stop shop for every Australian girl during their teenage years.

V

icki Steggall has fabulously captured the essence of the Sportsgirl brand and its creators in her latest novel, Anything Can Happen… Sportsgirl: The Bardas Years. The book details the Sportsgirl reign by the Bardas family from 1948 to 1994. However, the main focus of the novel is of son, David's takeover of the business after his father's untimely death in 1959. Though using the mantra of 'Exciting, New and Different', David transformed the Sportsgirl brand in the 1960s into what it is today, a celebration of youth culture, and in turn paving the way for Australian retailers. Through Bardas' revolutionary marketing strategies, on-trend (and at times risqué designs), and vast employment of females during a time women were overlooked, Bardas' ensured that Sportsgirl would become the place where “anything can happen” for generations of young Australian women. Filled with fabulous fashion photography featuring Australia's most loved models from over the years, as well as insider quotes and stories by individuals within the fashion industry, Anything Can Happen… Sportsgirl: The Bardas Years is a brilliant and inspiring read for any fashion savvy individual.

Fashion's way Forward WORDS FRANCES VAN EEDEN

Alana Flood is an emerging designer who has already made a name for herself in the fashion industry. The Sydney based design graduate has not only interned for renowned designers like Josh Goot and Dion Lee, but has gained experience in the international fashion industry in both London and New York. We spoke with Flood about the fashion industry in Australia and the inspiration behind her creative mind. Was there a significant moment that sparked your interest in the fashion industry? AF: I think I have always been interested in fashion, but I remember a specific moment when I saw a Tim Walker photoshoot for Vogue in 2005. There was an image of Lily Cole [in a] Stella McCartney gown … I remember looking at it and wanting to be a part of the industry that could create such beautiful work. How does your design process unfold? AF: I usually begin with one too many ideas … I then explore theoretical research and gradually start to find visuals that relate. From these I take my cue and start generating collages, colour palettes and abstract compositions which are eventually placed on the body and refined into garments. How would you describe your design aesthetic? AF: Minimal yet surprisingly loud, [my designs] explore strong angular lines, layered shapes and often a myriad of colours. You've travelled the globe, how has travel impacted your work? AF: For me travelling is like re-fuelling … [it] fills my brain with new inspirations, ideas and directions. 10

How would you describe your personal style? AF: I'm guilty of always dressing for comfort - oversized garments, relaxed fabrics, surprisingly a whole lot of black, and often borrowings from boys. What is the most challenging aspect of the fashion industry, particularly in Australia? AF: It is such a fast paced industry! While this is invigorating, it can also be pretty draining - especially when you're fronting up to deadline after deadline. In Australia ‌ we are yet to carve out a speciality for which we are known globally‌ it's exciting that we have the chance for designers to help shape how Australia will be known. What is next for you? AF: More travelling, creating, writing and if I'm lucky perhaps a little down time!

ast in Covent Garden and shot in Shoreditch, the fashion and feeling of this collection provides a very tangible nod to London fashion and popular culture. Specifically, the spirit of the collection is infused with a cool retrospective of Chelsea's Kings Road, a cultural landmark that was once synonymous with mod style and swinging sophistication. Focusing on Scott's signature aesthetic of creative yet commercial styling, precision cutting with maximum wearability is key throughout the collection, with '60sesque geometric angles providing really strong framing to the face. The look is sharp, defined and impeccably finished. Femininity, however, prevails via Jordan's softening of texture and use of a natural colour palette. High shine also plays a key role, inducing a sense of luxury and opulence into the overall look, cementing an inspirational stimulus that sits firmly within the sophisticated chapters of the era. In keeping with the 1960's vibe, quintessential fashion styling cues feature including a high polo neck, tailored collar and expensive fabric choices in the vein of a Cavanagh Suit. Make up has been kept very natural and neutral to contemporize the collection, whilst the photographic crop has been kept tight to maintain a focal point on the hair.

INTERVIEW S TA C E Y O ’ K E E F F E

Over dinner the night before New Year's Eve, a girlfriend of mine explained her fitspo plans for 2016. It was a difficult conversation for me to be apart of as I had to control myself not to blurt out exactly what I was thinking.

S

he often praised the athletically perfect models and aspired to create an aesthetic that resembled their ways.

But that's the problem with social media. It's an unrealistic platform that paints distorted and plastic versions of people's lives. I recently had a chat with Personal Trainer and Holistic Nutritionist, Amber Walker about her views on the influence faking-it-fit really has on today's modern society. "I've always been very fit and active," said Walker. "I was a bit of a science nerd, (she laughs) I've always loved health and fitness and as I've grown up I noticed the importance of it," said Personal Trainer and Holistic Nutritionist, Amber Walker. Though she has chosen a life that focuses on physical, emotional and mental wellbeing, the journey has come with its challenges.

You need to take time to find what makes your soul happy.

"In my late teens and and early twenties I suffered from severe depression. I'd lost a couple of friends early on in life." By the the time she was 22, Walker had been hopsitalised four times. Deemed beyond help by many medical experts, she used her Personal Trainer background and knowledge to seek out alternative ways to get through the days. With a complete lifestyle overhaul that focused on nourishing foods and physical movement, Walker transformed her health and began to see a brighter future for herself, one of helping others. 27

"I discovered that I needed to look after myself in all facets, not just nutrition and exercise. “You need to take time to find what makes your soul happy. We live in a society where that is not encouraged. We're encouraged to do other things that are materialistic and measurable. Sometimes it's about giving yourself 10 minutes where you can just think." With her knowledge and dedication to positively influencing our society, Walker has created an online wellness program called 60 Days To A Sexy Soul. When asked about the inspiration behind the name she said, "I wanted to combine wellness as something that is desirable. Who doesn't want a sexy soul?" Amber Walker takes a complete holistic approach to her coaching, looking at a persons health and wellness from the combined physical, mental, emotional and spiritual view so as to treat the whole person. "I don't tell my clients what to do. It's all about educating them about what they should be doing ... I'm empowering them."

Sadly, many young women are being negatively impacted as our society puts aspirations on being visually pleasing rather than praising or celebrating one's talents, personality and internal beauty. "There are some great fitspo accounts out there but there are also more accounts out there who have the right lighting and the right angle. They take the photo, go away and then ... get those hideous apps that can enhance features and not just put a filter on it. "You can make your boobs and butt bigger and make your tummy smaller and do all that sort of stuff and then they post them. They are unrealistic. These [images] are about looking fit but not feeling fit." In a world where we are obsessed with double tapping the latest superfoods, colourful smoothies and yoga poses in our feeds, maybe it's time to find another form of inspiration? “Only when you start looking at your health from a holistic 360 degree view, understanding how all these elements are intertwined, will you begin to see and feel really dramatic life changing results.

T

he platform allows members to access hundreds of fitness studios, gyms and facilities. Wherever members are located, they can try new activities at different studios, every day, at convenient locations and times, making it easier and more fun to maintain an active, healthy lifestyle. Having been inspired by the unexplored potential of underutilised class space as well as a consumer movement towards 'wellness,' serial entrepreneur Joel Neoh founded KFit in April 2015. With KFit, users are given a flexible and affordable choice with a subscription-based sharing economy model. Rather than owning membership to a single gym or studio, subscribers ostensibly share membership in hundreds of facilities.

30

Across Australia and New Zealand alone, there are already over 1,000 fitness studios, gyms and facilities to choose from. Options range from the more traditional - yoga, Pilates, boxing and Zumba - to the adventurous such as rock climbing and rap jumping. Membership also provides access to fun leisure activities including laser tag and bowling. “Because KFit is so easy and presents such a flexible approach to fitness, it is more likely that new clients will come to us. No phone call, no trial week, no induction and potential newcomers are not locked in at all. We've also found that if people enjoy our classes, they can sign up to us directly. It's great to generate qualified leads, says Rod Brooks, Director, Vibrabody (KFit partner).
