Editor's Letter Welcome to our July issue which is dedicated to all things beautiful and glamorous. Throughout this issue you will see a real focus on beauty. Our thought, "Let's take a virtual trip around the world and embrace women from all walks of life." Beauty is more than skin deep, it's an inside to outside transformation. Our cover girl, Taylor Firth, a young entrepreneur for Paramount Models, delivers a effortless take on quiet sensuality (page 26). Tracey Hughes, Creative Director from Mieka Hairdressing takes us to a world inspired by clean-cut minimalist lines, which displays a deliberate contrast between precise simplicity and conscious provocation (page 36).
The curtains closed on Collette Dinnigan’s first ever show in Asia and we have the runway wrap for you on page 18. Theo takes us into this season's trend alerts for all things hair (see page 46). We also have the yummy inside scoop on The Body Shop's Brazil Nut range, yes it is back on page 48. So this month, let's embrace global beauty and celebrate women from all walks of life.

Collette First Ever Showcase in Asia The curtains closed on Collette Dinnigan's First ever show in Asia presenting a runway show in Singapore to Media and buyers from all over Asia as well as Westpac Singapore's Top 100 Private Wealth Clients. As Australia's most Internationally recognised Fashion Designer, a large following has developed in Asia for the designer and her arriving and staging a show in Singapore was applauded, respected and loved by the buyers and media. Collette Dinnigan showed her Autumn Winter 13 collection with pieces made for the show especially for the Asian market. This was one of the designer's biggest shows she has ever presented with 1100 guests attending (VIP clients in Singapore, A-List and Westpac Singapore's top 100 private wealth clients as well as Media & Buyers) Collette was invited to show at the Audi Fashion Festival with a stand alone 18 Fashion Weekly âˆŤ July 2013
show as she was recognised as an International designer with a very large following and interest in Asia and in Singapore. Other International designers who showed in their own runway show is the respected U.S label Carolina Herrera, the very successful Peter Pilotto from the UK as well as International UK label Hussein Chalayan to name a few. Only the biggest International designers are invited to show at the festival and have included Missoni, Roberto Cavalli, Antonio Berrardi, Zac Posen, Erdem, Giles, Ungaro, Mugler to name a few. Collette is the first and only Australian designer to be invited to show. This show also comes in good timing when the Collette Dinnigan label is rapidly growing in Asia and with the backing of Westpac, it is they who are supporting the designers vision of expansion into Asia.

Inside the Diary of
WORDS MITCHELL HAYES
F
or those whom haven't yet been introduced to me, my name is Mitchell Hayes, and I graduated from MSIT with an Advanced Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Technology in 2012. At the end of my studies, I was lucky enough to be honoured with the MSIT (Metropolitan South Institute of Tafe) International Sponsorship Award, a prestigious award given to one fashion graduate each year, giving them the opportunity to work or study internationally. Being honoured with this award has enabled me to travel to London, where I studied at the world-renowned Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and interned for the London-based label Antipodium under the direction of the Australian head designer Geoffrey J Finch. It has been an intense four months, but I have learned so much and taken full advantage of the incredible opportunity. Studying textile-related short courses at Central Saint Martins has opened my eyes to a whole new level of innovation and creativity. There's an electric vibe throughout the campus. Everywhere you look you're presented with exciting works from the next big things in art, fashion and design. I completed courses in Digital Print on Textiles, Inventive Textile Manipulation for Fashion, and Machine Knitting, and already genuinely feel like a much more skilled and well-rounded designer for it. I have particularly taken to machine knitting, and have purchased and set up a noisy machine in my room, much to my housemates' displeasure. At St Martins, I was fortunate enough to see some of the knitwear students' portfolios which were inspirational to say the least. One fourth year student I spoke with had just completed a year's internship with Proenza Schouler and Dior, and another student with Chloe and Prada. 22 Fashion Weekly âˆŤ July 2013
Mitchell Hayes (left) & Creative Director, Geoffrey Finch (right)
Their work has already appeared in British Vogue, and they haven't even graduated yet. When my knitting tutor asked to see my graduate collection, I was nervous about what she may have thought, but she was genuinely surprised and impressed and told me it was the kind of creative collection that a graduate at St Martins might produce. I think her exact words were “Wow, I thought Australians only knew how to design wetsuits”! I'm so glad I decided to study at St Martins as it has taught me to strive for total innovation and think outside the box when it comes to my future collections. My time at Antipodium has been equally valuable. The first half of the internship was leading up to their Autumn/Winter 13 show at London Fashion Week. I feel like I've experienced so much at Antipodium, it's hard to believe I was only there for a few months! I've had the opportunity to sew, make and cut patterns, visit local suppliers and manufacturers, be involved in the model casting, and dress backstage at London Fashion Week. The second half of my internship was in the early stages of the Resort 14 collection. It was great to experience both the early and final stages of a collection, as I really felt like I learned a lot about the design and sampling process. I also must mention that the team at Antipodium are some of the funniest and loveable people I've met, and interning for them was an absolute pleasure! The collection, entitled “Sex, Lies and CCTV” honed in on the fact that from spy cams to sex tapes, all of modern life is tracked, recorded, shared and scrutinised. Some of my favourite pieces I worked on were the Crepe De Chine shirt and shirtdress featuring a print inspired by Sharon Stone in that scene from Basic Instinct, and an amazing green faux fur coat. Not a day went by while I was in London that I didn't think about how fortunate I was to be there, and how grateful I am for everybody who helped to get me there. Without the support of all the sponsors, this life-changing experience wouldn't have been possible for me, and without the care and attention of my tutors at Metropolitan South Institute of Tafe, I wouldn't have any of the skills I have today. I couldn't be more proud to be a graduate of MSIT.

RELAXED M O D E R N I T Y
I
n an industry saturated by prominent trends and social influences, bespoke style, individuality and a fresh approach to fashion is sometimes mistaken for bad taste. So when the fashion industry is buzzing with trends surrounding modern cuts, architectural hem lines and more feminine power than one can handle, how do insiders create a fresh approach? It seems the solution is upon us in the form of uber relaxed modernity.
Designers are straying from the strict-cut cult with originality and flair while maintaining popular influences. Sportive inspired figure cuts create for a relaxed take on the clinched waist and make for a tranquil yet powerful image. Play with textures leaves garments appearing chic but contemporary with a splash of effortless glam. Layering is prominent but translated from hobo winter to urban street style for the ultimate day to night dressing. Similarly, contrasting colours contribute to a relaxed glamorous effect. Think silver against deed red, blue and gun metal grey for a calming yet authoritative image. Relaxed cuts in the form of drop waists, longer top hemlines, loose fit trousers and even the odd poncho are making an appearance, creating incredibly comfortable yet fashionable style. Tomboy influenced accessories including over-sized beanies, trainers and jackets construct attitude mixed with individuality. This season is all about relaxed modernity with hints of understated power. It's a fine line between demanding attention to detail at carefree glam. Can you master it? INTERVIEW STACEY O’KEEFFE
51 Fashion Weekly ∫ July 2013
Up Close with Ben Hazelwood
O
ne of the country’s most talented rising vocalists and songwriters; Ben Hazlewood hasn’t stopped since his success as one of the finalists in the first season of The Voice in 2012. Ben has just released his new EP, Loveless in April this year. Which made the top 40 in Australia and reached #5 on the Australian iTunes pop album charts.
Over the past 12 months Ben has devoted his time in effort to writing songs, and preparing his EP. Ben has truly grown as an artist, and Loveless portrays his talent as both a vocalist and a songwriter. Interview: Stacey O'Keeffe
What’s going on with your career right now? I finished the Voice last year, and decided that it was time that I got something out there of me, by myself. I had been with my band in London before that (The Voice). So I kind of just decided that it was time to go solo. So after the show (The Voice) my amazing management team hooked me up with a lot of songwriters and producers in Sydney. Then I went into a lit-
tle lockdown mode, I guess, for 6 months. I just started writing as much as I could, and walked away after those 6 months with about 65 songs. Then chose the best ones that we thought were going to showcase my writing and vocal ability, and created the EP, “Loveless”. What’s been your inspiration for the EP? Probably just going through a whole lot of things over the past couple of years. It’s all about that, and my experiences through the show (The Voice) and after the show. Just everything that’s happened, I’ve just gotten in and started writing about it all. I guess that’s the inspiration. When did you decide that music was going to be your career? To be honest, maybe around 8 years old. My dad was a singer, and was involved in several different bands in New Zealand. So I kind of always grew up watching him sing with his bandmates and stuff. My mum is also a dance teacher, so I’ve been dancing from a young age as well. So I’ve always been in the creative, performing situation from a really young age. What music do you listen to, what would we find on your iPod?
"I just started writing as much as I could, and walked away after those 6 months with about 65 songs."
On my iPod at the moment I’ve been listening to a lot of The Script as always, they’re one of my favourite bands. Um, One Republic, Emeli Sandé and Ellie Goulding. I just really connect with songwriters who write about things that you can tell that they’ve been through. What would you be doing if you weren’t in the music industry? I have no idea... I really don’t know, I haven’t really given it that much thought. At one point I thought I’d be an architect, and then another point I would’ve been involved in dancing or something. I didn’t really have a strong passion for either of them. So it was always just music. What do you think about when you are performing? I need to be able to find that connection with the song, and make it my own and relate it to my own story, so I share the feeling. But it’s quite weird because once you get on the stage I don’t think you’re kind of in a normal frame of mind. I think you get transported into this really different sense about you, where you’re just singing and it’s a massive adrenaline rush. Especially when you’re performing your own music that you have such a strong connection
with. So in some ways I think it all just fades away, and it’s just that moment and that song. So, I don’t really have too many thoughts when I’m on stage, it’s just a surreal kind of moment. Do you have any mentors that inspire you on a daily basis? My family, because they’re really really supportive of me. I look up to people like Ryan Tedder from One Republic. who was a musician for a really long time, and he went on this reality TV show about songwriting. From there he started writing hits for Leona Lewis, Bleeding Love, and Beyoncé, Halo, and his song, Apologize. Obviously he just kept going, and kept writing and making himself better everyday. So I feel like I look up to him that way. Is there anything you’d like to add? Just that I’m doing a lot of live performances at the moment. I’m hopefully gigging as much as I can, I’m hoping I can get as much support as I can. Not only from people downloading the EP, but from the people coming out to the shows and seeing us perform live. Because the EP is really good, but my band and I are even better live. So it takes it to a whole new level. 53 Fashion Weekly ∫ July 2013

The lifestyles of the rich and the famous isn’t for everyone. Even some of the ones who wanted it, and got it don’t seem to enjoy it, they’re always complaining. Despite poundings from the tabloids, and constant harassment by the paparazzi; we’re curious to know what it’s like to be recognised wherever you go, and what it’s like to go to the A-list parties. For this group of teenagers they naturally did too. However, they’ve taken their obsession with fame and fortune a bit too far. With the internet at their fingers, they start finding celebrity’s homes, and they start robbing them. In order to look the part, and rub shoulders with the rich and famous. The young and very talented cast consists of Emma Watson, Katie Chang, Israel Broussard, Claire Julien, Taissa Farmiga and Georgia Rock. Directed by Sophia Coppola.
>
Well, if you’re a lover of cameos like me. This is the End, is undoubtedly the funny film you’ve been waiting for. I really clever take on the whole “party like there’s no tomorrow” mentality. The film is initially set at a Hollywood party, hosted by James Franco. Now, each celebrity in the film, plays themselves. During the party the apocalypse (or at least the beginning of) happens. Celebrities should never have to face a situation of survival, well at least that’s what the actions of those surviving depict. The cast is HUGE, and I’ll only drop a few names that have pieced this film together. Lead by James Franco, Seth Rogan, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Jay Baruchel and Danny McBride. They’re supported by, Rihanna, Michael Cera, Paul Rudd, Mindy Kaling and many more! Like I said, everyone plays themselves. Directed by Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg.
