Will My E-Mails Be Opened?

The target of your e-mail is being bombarded by messages. Not only have they limited their time with e-mail (just one more browser tab open along with Facebook, Twitter, etc.), but when your message arrives, it is surrounded by competition vying for your target’s attention. Whether you are a salesperson with a relatively small territory or an Internet Marketer with a list of 10’s of thousands of opt-in subscribers, there is always a lingering fear that your important e-mail message will end up in the recycle bin without being opened. The surest way to avoid that happening is by being a known and trusted source of the person to whom the e-mail is being sent. I can’t help you there. I can, however, help you develop a subject line that will get more of your emails open (and read and acted upon). Before we continue, I would like to ask “spammers” to immediately erase this eBook from their hard-drive and request a full refund. I’ll gladly refund your investment. This is as nicely as I can put it: if you are not e-mailing to people you know on some level or to people who have opted-in to your list or otherwise have indicated their approval for you contacting them, I would prefer you not use my material and I don’t want you as a client.

Introduction An email that isn’t opened goes unread. If you want your e-mail to be opened, you need a strong subject line. An e-mail subject line is like a headline for an article or advertisement; if the headline does not convince the target to read on, then all is lost. “On the average, five times as many people read the headline as read the body copy. It follows that, if you don’t sell the product in your headline, you have wasted 80% of your money.” -David Ogilvy Strong e-mail subject lines persuade the reader to open and read the text that follows. Studies show that with effective email subject lines, open rates can routinely be boosted by 50% or more.

CHAPTER 1 The Basics of Effective Email Subject Lines

▪ Arouse Curiosity; is the subject line sufficiently intriguing to prompt the recipient to open your e-mail? Be careful not to “give away” the entire message in the email subject line and lessen reader’s incentive to read further. ▪ Avoid Tricking Readers; you want to grab attention and create interest, but Mystery make sure not to cross the line of "tricking" the recipient into opening an email with content that does not deliver on the promise of the subject line. It does you no good if, based on the “promise” of the subject lines, the recipient opens your email, but is disappointed or confused. ▪ Appeal to Self-interest; everybody has things they want to avoid, improve, or solve. Offering the reader something that benefits them will make them more responsive. Often a quick and easy way to do something is effective … the more targeted towards a prospect’s specific needs/wants, the better. ▪ Be Succinct; shorter e-mail subject lines typically produce higher open and click-through rates: Some e-mail clients permit 80+ characters, others truncate, e.g., AOL and Hotmail truncate the email subject line if it is longer than 45-51 characters.

Chapter 2 21 Different Types of E-mail Subject Lines

1. URGENCY Subject Line - Because many people respond better to the threat of losing than to the promise of gaining, the use of urgency is an effective marketing tool that can also work in an e-mail subject line. LAST CHANCE to get 60% OFF -- Only 24 hours left!

2. BENEFIT Subject Line - An implied promise can be an effective way to get attention and interest in an e-mail subject line. The BENEFIT e-mail subject line conveys, in a few words, how your prospect can gain, save or accomplish something. I got you a free VIP pass, Scott

3. OFFER Subject Line –Basically this the BENEFIT subject with a more specific benefit positioned as an offer (often combined with the PRODUCT-ORIENTED subject line) that reveals the primary benefit. Scott, Do You Want To Resell My Software? Make 100% Profits!
