Duet || 2 Modern Mini Quilts by John Q Adams

Sometimes I think the fabric in my sewing room comes to life at night, while the entire family is sleeping. Little bundles of scraps and fat quarters come together in new, unusual, and sometimes unexpected combinations, each of which immediately becomes my favorite new combination of color, pattern, and texture. And then these little bundles start calling to me. They beg and plead to be cut up and sewn back together into something that more permanently fuses their unique personalities together into a larger, more cohesive being. A different beast altogether. Unfortunately, I can’t appease all of them. The ever-growing list of projects-to-bemade combined with, you know, life, often gets in the way. To make quilts out of all of them is just unrealistic. And therein lies the beauty of the mini quilt. Mini quilts are the amouse-bouche* of the quilting world. According to Wikipedia,

in the culinary world an amouse-bouche is “a little tingler for the taste buds, both to prepare the guest for the meal and to offer a glimpse into the chef's approach to cooking.” What a perfect way to view the mini quilt. Whether used as a wall hanging, table topper, gift idea, or doll quilt, these small creations are great projects for quilters who have a shortage of either time or attention span. * thanks, Top Chef! My Duet project is my answer to the latest little bundles of fabric that were begging to become something bigger than themselves. These two bundles (which include a selection from Tula Pink’s Prince Charming line, Kate Spain’s Terrain collection, Moda Bella solids, and some Free Spirit houndstooth basics) are my latest favorites, and I designed a small mini quilt pattern to showcase each. Plus, some simple quilt math adjustments will yield full-sized quilt patterns, should you find that your fabric bundles are simply screaming too loudly for you to ignore.
