Kingdom Courtyards by John Adams
Do you enjoy sewing? Do you like hanging out with like minded people? Yes? Then the Fat Quarterly Sewing Retreat is for you! We have planned a fun filled weekend of silly games, sewing challenges, tutorial workshops and more! Come and meet the Fat Quarterly team in their entirety (yes we will ALL be there!) and make lots of new friends in the quilting community.
This quilt, a new spin on a traditional Chinese Coin quilt, is a great weekend quilt. It’s easy to cut, quick to sew toget her, and is a great pattern for showing off large prints. Plus, it’s highly versatile – varying the color and print placement can completely change the look of this quilt. Inspired by the fabrics from which it was made, I think the quilt resembles a bird’s-eye view of architectural gardens … hence, the name Kingdom Courtyards. I sure hope you like it!

Apple Pie Pillow by Tacha Bruecher Geared-Up Robot by Jenny Novinsky
Teapot Fancy Block by Kerry Green
This is a great beginner project suitable for first time piecers. The block has been designed for you to try two methods of piecing: freezer paper and foundation. There are two sets of instructions, one for each method, and each will yield the same teapot block. With both methods we will be working in mirror image to the PDF pattern. Your finished block will look like the colour map image. Freezer paper piecing works like a jigsaw puzzle and foundation piecing uses paper as a foundation that you stitch the fabric pieces onto. Both methods have pros and cons and there is no definitive technique for paper piecing, try both to find which suits your sewing style. Make both blocks and use one for each side of a tea cozy!

This pillow is inspired by a Boston, MA winter tradition, ice skating on Frog Pond. Frog Pond is located in the Boston Common, at the heart of city. The paper pieced ice skate block is embellished with embroidered laces and metal brads. Narrow borders and 4 Drunkard’s Path blocks create the appearance of a picture frame around the skate block. This framed image floats on a background resembling snow. The paper pieced block requires basic experience paper piecing.

The Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop for Quilters Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop for Quilters was born out of our shared history as four modern quilters who came together as a team: specifically, a history of collaborating in swaps and virtual quilting bees. For that reason, we devoted a large portion of our book to quilt blocks — a mix of block patterns and ideas both traditional and modern, classic and original, and all with our own twist. All are perfect for those participating in quilting bees, or who love making sampler quilts, pillows, or projects featuring a single block design. And as a nod to our continued evolution, those block patterns are complemented by a selection of larger sewn project ideas, from placemats to pillows to fullsized quilts, all mixed together with a few surprises.
