Haymarket Town Council approves part of Crossroads Village Center By Jonathan Hunley Times Staff Writer

The Haymarket Town Council on Monday night approved part of a 21acre mixed-use development, denied another part and deferred discussion

on still another portion. The actions were taken on Crossroads Village Center, a project that aims to add 79 townhouses, three fast-food restaurants and other commercial outlets to the municipality.

Council members approved the townhouses and a bank with drive-thru lanes. They also OK’d a permit for a building that is planned to be either a hotel or an assisted-living facility. The permit would allow

the structure to be 75 feet tall if it was used as a hotel but only 50 feet tall if it was an assisted-living facility, the idea being that the hotel is a more attractive option for the town. See CROSSROADS, Page 2

10-year-old girl killed by fallen tree remembered as ‘beautiful, kind’ LYDIA, from Page 1 It’s not known exactly why the large tree fell onto the James’ home and into Lydia’s bedroom, pinning her onto her bed. The tree might have been struck by lightning, or it might have given way because the ground was so saturated with rain. “Trees have been coming down” due to ground saturation from frequent and heavy rainfall, said Sam Myers, an assistant chief of the Warrenton Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department. He noted that a woman was killed in Burke last week by a falling tree. The split-foyer home, in the 6200 block of Highmeadow Place in the Cedar Run subdivision, was purchased by Bethany and Casey James in June, according to Fauquier Coun-

ty tax records. The 911 call was made by a neighbor at about 10:25 p.m. Warrenton fire and rescue officials were on the scene in about six minutes. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene, according to reports from the sheriff’s office and fire department. The responding units had cutting and prying equipment. A squad from the Gainesville fire and rescue station in Prince William County arrived with additional equipment, Myers said. “It was a very large tree that came down on the corner of the house,” Myers said. An initial report indicated there were two children in the house, but it was determined that only one child and her parents were present, Myers said.

A large tree fell on the the home on the 6200 block of Highmeadow Place on Aug. 1. “The tree was stabilized using hydraulic struts than can hold thousands of pounds,” Myers explained. “It stopped the crushing and stabilized the tree so that we could fig-

ure out how compromised the house was. It was fairly stable,” Myers said. The response units were on the scene from 10:31 p.m. until the final one left at 2:13 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2.

Haymarket Town Council approves part of Crossroads Village Center CROSSROADS, from Page 1 The council denied a permit for an auto repair business and deferred discussion on the three fast-food restaurants, seeking more information on where dumpsters for those businesses would be located. It’s not yet known which eateries might occupy the spaces, only that they would have drive-thru windows. The patchwork of decisions showed that the government was taking each aspect of the project and weighing it on its own merits, said Haymarket Mayor David Leake. “So this was a good example in my eyes that this is the way it’s supposed to work,” he said. Crossroads Village Center is proposed by Chantilly-based developer Meladon Group, which built the Cascades Overlook Town Center in Sterling. It’s planned for a tract bordered by Washington Street, U.S. 15 and Interstate 66. “We’re hopeful we can provide those details,” he said. The council’s decisions — which all came on 5-1 votes, except for the hotel item, which was decided unanimously — came after a public hearing that lasted more than two hours and saw comments from 30 speakers. Most of them were opposed to one or more aspects of Crossroads Village Center, and comments largely addressed the development’s impact on school enrollment and traffic. “My concern is for students,” Prince William School Board member Alyson A. Satterwhite told town council members. The Prince William County School Division anticipates the 79 townhomes in Crossroads Village Center will generate a total of 49 new students: 24 elementary-schoolers; 11 middle-schoolers; and 14 high-school students. The area is zoned for Haymarket Elementary, Reagan Middle and

Battlefield High schools. And of the three, only Haymarket Elementary is projected to remain under capacity at 86.5 percent this school year. Both Reagan Middle and Battlefield High are already overcapacity, and Battlefield will again be the most crowded school in the county when school begins later this month. Crossroads Village Center’s developer has pledged a cash donation to the school division of $10,300 per townhouse, or about $813,700 total, to mitigate the effect of the new students. Other speakers, such as Jose Gomez-Acevedo, worried about traffic. “Any increase in the population, any increase in the traffic, it will be a huge, huge factor in the lives of us who are living here,” Gomez-Acevedo said. Crossroads Village Center would have three entrance points off Washington Street. One would be just to the west of Giuseppe’s restaurant, and one would be east of the driveway for Chick-fil-A. The third would be in between those two entrances, where the developer would ask the Virginia Department of Transportation to install a stoplight. Additional traffic that the development would generate was also described in the public hearing as an issue that would change the character of Haymarket. The town was designed to be a walking community, but it could be rendered as more of a place just to exit I-66, said Laura Newman. “We’re going to become a rest stop,” she said. Hampshire, however, said that studies show that there will be less traffic in Crossroads Village Center with a mix of commercial and residential components than if the land was developed for only businesses, which the Meladon Group could have done without getting approval from the town council. 19-year-old Woodbridge man arrested in fatal shooting Police seek witnesses in crash outside NOVA Manassas campus A 19-year-old Woodbridge man has been charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting Wednesday, Aug. 1 that resulted in the death of a 22-year-old Woodbridge man. Prince William County police announced the arrest of Jorge Anthony Sandoval, 19, Friday, Aug. 3. Sandoval is being held without bond at the Prince William County Adult Detention Center, according to a police press release. The Aug. 1 shooting occurred on the 14700 block of Arizona Avenue, in Woodbridge. The police investi-

gation revealed that the victim and the suspect were on the back deck of the home when the shooting occurred, the press release said. Detectives are still trying to determine what led up to the altercation that resulted in the shooting. But they know the men knew each other, the press release said. The victim’s name has not yet been released as detectives are still awaiting contact with his next-ofkin, the press release said. The incident is Prince William County’s third homicide of 2018.

Woodbridge 7-Eleven robbed at midday The 7-Eleven convenience store at the corner of Minnieville Road and Cardinal Drive was robbed by an armed man about 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, according to Prince William County police. Officers were called to the Woodbridge store, at 14410 Minnieville Road, after an employee reported that an unknown man entered the store and displayed a handgun. The suspect forced the employee to open

the cash register to obtain money before he fled on foot. No injuries were reported. A police K-9 searched for the suspect who was not located. He is described as white, between 22 and 28 years old, between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 9 inches tall with black hair. He was last seen wearing black headphones, sunglasses, a black shirt and blue jeans. The investigation continues.

Police: Woman kissed, inappropriately touched by gas-station employee A 53-year-old employee of an Exxon gas station on Minnieville Road was arrested Wednesday, Aug. 1, after a 19-year-old woman told police he kissed her on the face and touched her against her will when she went into the gas station to

get a receipt. Samuel Derash Beshah, 53, of Woodbridge, faces charges of sexual battery in connection with the incident. He was released on a court summons, according to a police press release.

Prince William police are looking for the driver of a silver vehicle who left the scene of a serious crash outside Northern Virginia Community College’s Manassas campus Tuesday evening that sent five people to the hospital with injuries. The silver vehicle, of unknown make or model, failed to yield at a stop sign on Campus Drive before turning north onto Sudley Road just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, according to a Prince William County police. That maneuver is believed to have set off a chain-reaction crash. A 38-year-old Chantilly man driving a BMW 330, also heading north, swerved to avoid the silver vehicle. While doing so, he crossed into the path of a 1998 Jeep Cherokee traveling in the southbound lanes, according to an initial police investigation of the incident. The driver of the Jeep, a 61-yearold Manassas man, lost control while

Helmer enters the race to unseat Del. Tim Hugo in 2019 By James Ivancic Times Staff Writer

Dan Helmer’s unsuccessful bid for the Democratic nomination to challenge Rep. Barbara Comstock didn’t turn him off politics. He’s plunging into a 2019 campaign to unseat Del. Tim Hugo, the only Republican in Fairfax and Prince William counties re-elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2017. In June, Helmer came in fourth in a crowded, six-candidate field in June to be the Democratic nominee in the closely watched 10th District congressional race. State Sen. Jennifer Wexton won that nomination. Helmer came in third in fundraising with $895,337 raised. “I’ve always looked for opportunities to serve my country and community,” said Helmer, explaining why he filed with the Virginia Department of Elections to run against Hugo. In talking to constituents of the 40th District, Helmer said he determined “out-of-the-box” solutions are needed for transportation problems, better pay for teachers and educational opportunities for students and an end to gerrymandering.

The 40th District includes parts of Prince William and Fairfax counties. It is the only House of Delegates district in Northern Virginia still held by a Republican. Donte Tanner has Dan Helmer withdrawn from the 2019 race. He joined Helmer in a video the latter made to announce his candidacy. Tanner nearly defeated Hugo in 2017. A recount upheld Hugo’s win of a 10th term. Helmer said he’s also been endorsed by 10 Democratic state delegates and four state senators as well as by Sharon Bulova, chairwoman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. The list can be seen in its entirety on Helmer’s website, danhelmer.com. Helmer graduated from West Point, served in the U.S. Army and now is a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserves. He works as a consultant and lives in Fairfax County with his wife and children. Reach James Ivancic at jivancic@ fauquier.com

Kyle Green announces candidacy for Virginia Senate’s 13th District By Jonathan Hunley Times Staff Writer

Democrat Kyle Green, a Marine Corps combat veteran who served in Afghanistan, announced his candidacy Monday for the state Senate’s 13th District seat. The district includes parts of Prince William and Loudoun counties, and is represented by Sen. Dick Black, who intends to run for re-election in the contest that will be decided in November 2019. Green moved to the district in 2005, and is a former volunteer for the Purcellville Rescue Squad, a former high school debate coach and a past president of the Schar School Alumni Chapter at George Mason University. In a statement announcing his campaign, he said he is running on a progressive Democratic platform that includes refusing money from corporate political action committees, fighting to fully fund schools, enacting responsible gun safety legislation, protecting the environment, adopting comprehensive criminal justice reform, and raising the minimum wage. Green said in the statement that he is running because “our district deserves a representative who will be a voice for the entire community rather than someone who uses the office to push special interests. I know this will be a tough race; my opponent is known to be unscrupulous. The truth is, sometimes it takes a Marine to re-

tire a Marine.” Black couldn’t be reached to comment on Green’s assertions. In a phone interview, Green, who lives in Ashburn, said that bringing the community’s voice to Richmond as a state senator would be just another way for him to serve others. “It’s something that my family has instilled in me,” he said. For example, he said his grandmother served as mayor of Emory, Texas, a few years ago while battling breast cancer. Though Black is a staunch conservative, the 13th District has trended Democratic in the past two elections, Green pointed out. Democrat Hillary Clinton carried the area by six points in 2016, and her party mate Gov. Ralph Northam won it by 11 points last year. Green’s announcement also said that he’s been endorsed by “wellknown political candidates across Northern Virginia,” and it included a comment from Donte Tanner, a Democrat who narrowly lost a 2017 contest for the 40th House of Delegates district to incumbent Del. Tim Hugo. “During my campaign, I saw Kyle’s unwavering commitment to service before self,” Tanner said. “He has the fresh perspective we need in Richmond. That is why I encouraged him to continue his public service journey and run for elected office.” Reach Jonathan Hunley at jhunley@fauquier.com

Farm stand opens in Historic Occoquan By Delia Engstrom Contributing Writer

Farm-fresh produce is now available in Historic Occoquan, thanks to the addition of the Occoquan Farm Stand. Owner Michael Henry opened the doors of the stand a few weeks ago and is already building a loyal following. Customers stop in for items such as heirloom tomatoes, juicy nectarines and fragrant heads of garlic, while enjoying the ease of one-stop shopping. “I heard about the stand opening via word of mouth,” says Occoquan resident Pat Lynn. “It’s so convenient and fresh.” The idea for a farm stand was planted after Henry conversed with customers at The Pretentious Gourmet, a cookie and ice cream shop he owns around the corner. “I originally began by selling my cookies at farmers markets in Alexandria and opened my Occoquan shop last year,” he said. “Any time a customer there learned about my farmers market experience, they’d comment about how they missed having one in town.” Historic Occoquan had briefly been home to a market that closed several years ago. But instead of attempting to schedule a once-a-week gathering of various farmers, Henry decided to gather produce at farmers markets himself and sell it several days a week. As Henry awaits approval from the town’s Architectural Review Board for permanent signage, a chalk-written sandwich board perches on the steps of 202 Union St. in a space that was formerly part of the recently-closed Golden Goose. Henry only hand-picks items that are pesticide-free and come from farms that use only natural fertilizers, such as compost and manure. A few select businesses from Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, which also supply Amish eggs and cheese, fit the bill.

Henry said he plans to operate the stand year-round. Despite his high standards, there were more than 20 different items available for sale last week, including potatoes, watermelon, blueberries and fresh herbs. “I built a relationship with some of the farmers over the years and also learned a lot about their produce by having a tent set up next to them at the farmers market,” Henry said. This knowledge comes in handy when health-conscious shoppers like Lynn pop in. “I’m looking for a good cantaloupe and some sweet peaches today,” she said as Henry directed her to the bushel baskets dotting the burlap-covered tables. Together they sniffed the cantaloupes with Henry directing. “If it smells good to you, it will taste good to you, too.” Once the perfect fruits were selected, Lynn also grabbed some summer squash, which she planned to prepare that evening. Open between 3 and 8 p.m. Friday through Monday, the Occoquan Farm Stand is convenient for residents or commuters passing through Occoquan to find the freshest inspiration for Friday night dinners or weekday meal prep. He’s also happy to accommodate special requests. “I recently got pickling cucumbers for a restaurant here in town,” he said. Customers can visit www. Facebook.com/OccoquanFarmStand to see what’s currently available or contact Henry at 703-346-9177. He also has an arsenal of recipe suggestions at the ready for those bewildered by broccoli or confused by corn. “Just microwave a bit of broccoli for 90 seconds,” he suggested, adding: “Nothing is better than Old Bay seasoning on corn!” Reach Delia Engstrom at news@ fauquier.com

State delegates, senators already raising money for 2019

At stake: partisan control of the closely split Virginia legislature By James Ivancic Times Staff Writer

Candidates and incumbents are already gearing up — and raising money — for the upcoming 2019 battle for partisan control of Virginia’s state legislature, which the GOP now controls by the slimmest possible margins. Republicans outnumber Democrats by just two seats in both the 40-member state Senate and the 100-member House of Delegates. Incumbents in both parties are currently outraising their challengers, recent campaign finance reports filed with the Virginia Department of Election show. But the pace of fundraising more than a year ahead of the November 2019 contest suggests Northern Virginia incumbents are taking nothSen. Dick Black ing for granted.

Here’s how our local races stack up:

In the state Senate:

Sen. Dick Black, a Republican, raised $335,314 as of June 30. Black’s 13th District, which straddles Loudoun and Prince William counties, is one of the last districts in Northern Virginia still held by the GOP. James E. Maple, of Maplevista Farm in Purcellville, has been a consistent financial supporter of Black over the past two years with donations totaling $146,600. Maple made monthly donations of $7,200 in April, May and June of this year, according to records compiled by the Virginia Public Access Project. But four Democrats are currently vying for their party’s nomination to unseat Black next year. Of those candidates, Suhas Subramanyam, reported the most in cash contributions — $93,294 — including five individual donations of $10,000 apiece. Subramanyam also received a

$20,000 donation in May from Professional Automotive Relocation Services, a fleet-management service in Gainesville. Democrat Kyle Green was next in line with $12,803 in cash contributions, which included $5,304 from himself. Green also received a $2,000 contribution from G. Philip Stevenson of Freedom Capital LLC, a mortgage lender, and reported $15,837 of in-kind contributions. Two other Democratic candidates for the 13th District Senate seat, Lucero Wiley and Jasmine Moawad-Barrientos, reported no money raised or expended. Freshman Sen. Scott Surovell, a Democrat, is next in line with $302,279 raised, most of which came this year. Surovell had a balance of $11,679 Jan. 1. S u r o v e l l ’s largest contributor is Edward Hart Rice, who Sen. Scott Surovell works in private equity and investing. He has donated $15,000 to Surovell over the past two years. Surovell also received $10,000 in March from Surovell Isaacs & Levy PLC, a law firm where he works as a founding member. Surovell is so far running unopposed in his 36th District, which includes parts of eastern Fairfax, Prince William and Stafford counties. Jill Vogel, the Republican incumbent in the 27th District and the GOP

nominee for lieutenant governor, is running for a fourth term with $162,000 raised. Her two biggest donations were $12,500 from the law firm of Allen, Allen, Allen Sen. Jill Vogel and Allen, a personal injury law firm, and $10,000 from Michael A. Smith of Valley Proteins, a food processing/distributions company. Vogel also received $5,000 from Dominion Energy. Highland School teacher Ronnie Ross, who is seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination to challenge Vogel, raised $3,050 as of June 30. The total includes $2,000 from Ike Broaddus, co-owner of Old Bust Head Brewing Co in Fauquier County, and $1,000 from Ross himself. The 27th District includes parts of six counties, including Clarke, Culpeper, Fauquier, Frederick, Loudoun and Stafford counties and Winchester City. Freshman Sen. Jeremy McPike, a Democrat representing the 29th Sen. Jeremy McPike District, which includes part of Prince William County and all of Manassas and Manassas Park, is thus far running unopposed. Still, McPike reported $123,221 raised for his campaign coffers June 30, with

$44,319 of that carried over from last year. McPike’s largest contributor — the Virginia Beer Wholesalers Association — donated $9,758 to McPike’s campaign over the past two years. He also received $3,000 from Micron Technology Inc. and $2,500 from Transurban USA, the company that owns and operates the Interstate 95 and 495 Express Lanes, also over the past two years.

In the House of Delegates:

Incumbent Del. Tim Hugo is the House of Delegates’ top fundraiser in 2018, raking in about $178,000 since Jan. 1. Hugo, the GOP’s majority caucus leader, was the only Republican who held on to his Northern Virginia seat amid the “blue wave” election that swept 15 new Democrats into office in 2017, slashing the GOP’s previous 66-to-34 seat majority to just 51 to 49, a split determined only after a random drawing settled a tie vote in a Newport News-area 94th district. Hugo is running for an 11th term in his 40th District, which includes parts of Prince William and Fairfax counties. Hugo reported $212,791 raised, including a starting balance of $34,140 on Jan. 1. Hugo’s biggest donor during the current reporting period was Common Sense VA, a Republican political action committee, which gave him $73,000. His second-largest donor was Facebook, which gave him $7,000. Other donors include the Virginia Bankers Association, Virginia Cable Telecom Association and Verizon, which each gave him $5,000. Democrat Dan Helmer, who ran unsuccessfully earlier this year for his party’s nomination to challenge Rep. Barbara Comstock, announced

last week he’s jumping into the race to unseat Hugo next year. Helmer has received the endorsement of Hugo’s most recent Democratic challenger, Donte Tanner, who came within about 100 votes of defeating Hugo in 2017. Incumbent freshman Del. Danica Roem, a Democrat serving her first term in the 13th District, came in third place statewide in fundraising among delegates this year. She raised $92,136, including the $11,956 she carried from last year. Roem’s top donors were Michael D. Bills, Frederick D. Schaufeld and S. Sonjia Smith, who each gave $10,000. Mills is the founder of Clean Virginia, which supports candidates who refuse donations from Dominion Energy and other publicly-regulated electric companies. Schaufeld is an investment banker and Smith is a philanthropist from Charlottesville. Roem also received $5,000 from the Human Rights Campaign. Roem is so far running unopposed in the 13th District, which includes western Prince William County and Manassas Park. Incumbent freshman Del. Jennifer Carroll Foy, also a Democrat without opposition at this point, reported $47,565 raised, including $33,793 carried over from last year. Bills was Foy’s biggest contributor. Clean Virginia gave Foy $10,000. The 2nd District includes parts of Prince William and Stafford counties. Incumbent freshman Del. NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC OF PETITION OF VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY FOR APPROVAL OF A PLAN FOR ELECTRIC DISTRIBUTION GRID TRANSFORMATION PROJECTS PURSUANT TO § 56-585.1 A 6 OF THE CODE OF VIRGINIA CASE NO. PUR-2018-00100 On July 24, 2018, Virginia Electric and Power Company (“Dominion” or “Company”) filed a petition with the State Corporation Commission (“Commission”) for approval of a plan for electric distribution grid transformation projects (“Petition”) pursuant to § 56-585.1 A 6(“Subsection A 6”) of the Code of Virginia. Specifically, Dominion seeks approval of the first three years (“Phase I”) of its ten-year Grid Transformation Plan (“GT Plan’). The estimated total proposed investment associated with Phase I is $816.3 million in capital investment and $101.5 million in operations and maintenance investment. Pursuant to Subsection A 6, the Commission is required to issue its final order on the Petition within six months of the filing date. The Company states that Phase I will focus on seven components of the overall GT Plan including: (i) smart meters; (ii) customer information platform; (iii) reliability and resilience; (iv) telecommunications infrastructure; (v) cyber and physical security; (vi) predictive analytics; and (vii) emerging technology. The Company proposes to fully deploy smart meters and their supporting network infrastructure across its service territory, which the Company asserts is a foundational component of the GT Plan. During Phase I, the Company estimates that it will install approximately 1 4 million smart meters across its service territory. The Company also proposes to develop and deploy a new customer information platform (“CIP”) to replace its twenty-year-old customer information system. The Company asserts that the CIP will be a framework of technologies and applications that together deliver comprehensive customer information and streamlined transactions, as well as multi-channeled engagement between Dominion and its customers. The CIP will include, among other things, a customer information system supporting processes such as metering, billing, credit, service orders, and revenue reporting. The Company states that to improve reliability and resilience, the Company proposes to (i) deploy intelligent grid devices; (ii) implement operations and automated control systems; (iii) perform grid hardening activities; and (iv) implement physical security measures at certain substations. The Company also states that it proposes to deploy a foundational, forward-looking telecommunications strategy and solution as a critical and interdependent component of the GT Plan, m addition to a comprehensive strategy for predictive analytics. The Company states that it will also monitor emerging technologies and propose investments where reasonabre and prudent. As part of the Petition, the Company is proposing to begin its Smart Lighting Initiative and to deploy a streamlined net metering application process. Through the Smart Lighting Initiative, the Company states that it intends to mount intelligent grid devices on certain Company-owned streetlights. The Company asserts that Phase I of the GT Plan is reasonable, prudent, and in the public interest, and states that it will provide benefits to customers in three primary categories: (i) increased reliability and resiliency; (ii) improved customer experience; and (iii) reduced components of cost of service. The Commission entered an Order for Notice and Hearing in this case that, among other things, scheduled a public hearing at 10 a.m. on November 14, 2018, in the Commission’s second floor courtroom located in the Tyler Buildmg, 1300 East Main Street, Richmond, Virginia 23219, to receive the testimony of public witnesses. Any person desiring to testify as a public witness should appear at the hearing location fifteen (15) minutes prior to the starting time of the hearing and contact the Commission’s Bailiff. A public hearing will convene on November 15, 2018, at 9:30 a.m., in the same location, to receive the testimony and evidence offered by the Company, respondents, and the Commission Staff on the Company’s Petition. The Company’s Petition and the Commission’s Order for Notice and Hearing are available for public inspection during regular business hours at each of the Company’s business offices in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Copies also may be obtained by submitting a written request to counsel for the Company, Sarah R. Bennett, Esquire, McGuireWoods LLP, Gateway Plaza, 800 East Canal Street, Richmond, Virginia 23219. If acceptable to the requesting party, the Company may provide the documents by electronic means. OPINION WWW.PRINCEWILLIAMTIMES.COM

With social media comes great responsibility Roseanne Barr loses her successful TV show after tweeting insulting comments about Valerie Jarrett. Philadelphia 76ers president of basketball operations and general manager Bryan Colangelo resigns from the team after his wife admits to establishing and operating anonymous Twitter accounts critical of players, league executives and releasing sensitive team information. The New York Times faces criticism for hiring Sarah Jeong to its editorial board after tweets surface critical of white culture (she has claimed her tweets were satirical trolling, and the Times has stuck by her). In February, the Times found itself in a similar situation when it attempted to hire Quinn Norton to the editorial board, after it surfaced she had used gay and racial slurs in tweets and once supported a neo-Nazi hacker. In that case she was terminated OUR VIEW within days. Pitcher Josh Hader, Major League Baseball all-star, finds himself apologizing after the game as racist, homophobic and sexist tweets from his account, made when he was 17, surface and start to trend on Twitter during the game. Washington Nationals shortstop Trea Turner finds himself in a similar situation, apologizing to the LBGT community, African–American community, and special needs community after ugly tweets made when he was a teen come to light. Atlanta pitcher Sean Newcome also comes under fire for racist and homophobic slurs made as a teenager on the popular social media platform. It seems almost daily there is a reminder that words and activities on social media platforms can not only have dire consequences; they also have a long half life. Before the Information Age, it was common practice for TV stations to run a public service announcement asking if you knew where your children were in the evening. Times have changed

— many children are physically on the couch or in their room, nose buried in a tablet or smartphone — but the question is still valid. Do you know where they are — on the internet? YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat or whatever else might be the flavor of the month, keeping up with it all can be a harrowing, but necessary task. Obviously, cyberbullying is the first danger that comes to mind, Melania Trump has even made it her key initiative. But, bullying or being bullied isn’t the only concern. Just as important are what is shared and said. It’s no secret employers and universities have begun using social media profiles to judge the character of potential hires or students. And the government has long been tracking conversations in social media to

evaluate potential threats. The old adage is still true: Nothing shared online is truly private. By placing information out there, the user loses control over it. Many social media platforms offer delete functions, but the ability to scrub activities, embarrassing tweets and photos is questionable, at best. So much so, an industry has sprouted up around the task. And while a deleted post or email may not be visible, it will still exist on a company’s servers for whatever amount of time the company deems necessary. That’s one of the rights it claims in the small type when signing up. So whatever is out there is vulnerable to a security breach. Even social media posts, emails, and text messages. Even Snapchat, popular because snaps disappear after a short

time, isn’t completely immune. Users can still take screenshots, and third party apps exist to allow users to save snaps. And it also allows users to save pictures and videos under a passcode. “Being 17 years old, you know, you make stupid decisions and mistakes,” Hader said. Unfortunately, seven years later, instead of celebrating the greatest moment of his young life, he was standing before his teammates apologizing for those decisions and mistakes. From driving, to voting, to graduating and moving on to the next stage of life, moving through the school system is all about developing and taking on new responsibilities. With “back to school” just around the corner, a little awareness should go a long way to help avoid some of those decisions and mistakes that can negatively impact lives in years to come.

NEW REDSKINS BY WAY OF MANASSAS

Former Stonewall stars Settle, Stroman should play vs. Patriots Thursday By Noah Fleischman Special to the Times

The former Stonewall Jackson High School and Virginia Tech defensive duo of Greg Stroman and Tim Settle are preparing to make their NFL debuts Thursday night for the Washington Redskins against the New England Patriots. Interviewed Monday in Richmond, the rookies hold similar expectations for themselves: to get better as they enter the spotlight in Foxboro. Game time is 7:30 p.m. “I’m looking forward to playing in my first NFL preseason game, getting after it, getting a lot of reps in against different O-lineman, and representing the Redskins,” said Settle, a nose tackle drafted in the fifth round. He’s listed No. 2 on the depth chart. Stroman, a seventh-round pick, looks to impress the coaching staff at cornerback and special teams. He’s listed at No. 4 on the depth chart at one of the cornerback slots and No. 1 at kick returner. Stroman excelled in Blacksburg, amassing 1,108 punt return yards and four punt return touchdowns over his four-year career. He averaged 11.3 yards per return last season with two TDs. Stroman showed his competitive side during Monday’s practice as he dueled other kick returners as they tried to receive simulated kicks while holding multiple footballs. Stroman finished second in the game, topping out at five footballs. “I’ve done six before, the way I caught it I had three in the right, two underneath, and just catch it,” said Stroman. “I think all of it is fun. It actually does help” relieve stress. Monday’s training camp was full of Redskins faithful as they lined the practice field, stretching nearly the entire 100-yard natural grass surface. The fans were close to the action in the seven-on-seven drills, seeing multiple Redskins make shoestring catches. Burgundy and gold faithful also admired new starting quarterback Alex Smith, who impressed the fans with a couple deep throws during the practice. Stroman saw action in the seven-on-seven scrimmages with the second team defense against the second team offense and backup quarterback Colt McCoy. Settle appeared in defensive line drills during Monday’s practice. Stroman is trying to show coaches “that I can take in information, go play ball, compete, and make plays,” said Stroman, who expects “just regular game nerves” Thursday. Settle hopes to make all the right

New Redskins Tim Settle and Greg Stroman are both expected to play Thursday against the New England Patriots. moves as he bids to solidify his roster spot. “Executing on every play, every play that I get a chance to make, make sure I’m where I need to be and no missed assignments,” Settle said. Settle did not miss many assign-

ments last season at Virginia Tech, as he recorded 36 total tackles and 12.5 tackles for a loss, with four sacks. Settle seems to have figured training camp out. “I think I got the hang of it. At times it’s kind of stressful, but I feel like I have the hang of the everyday

mindset and mentality,” Settle said after Day 10 of camp in Richmond. “You have to take care of your body more in the NFL. It’s just all about staying healthy and taking care of your body.” The Redskins host the Jets Aug. 16 at FedEx Field.

Okay, so we sort of, kind of, summarized the entire article in the title, but hey, let’s focus on what your local Prince William Public Library has to offer this summer when you need a break from that Virginia sun (and humidity)! Summer Reading continues until Aug. 11. There’s still time to earn a stamp or get a punch on your punch card to get great prizes. Remember, there are prizes after two, six and nine stamps or punches, including the chance to win an iPad. In addition, there are weekly challenges for the chance to win additional coupons and prizes. Even better, adults can participate in summer reading, too! We have more than 200 programs planned throughout August for all ages. Everything from a puppet show to Dinosaurs with Dinoman is being offered this month. Do you have a little one getting ready for their first year of school? All 11 of our libraries will have stories and songs about riding the bus, then will in-

vite kids to climb aboard a school bus between Aug. 8 and 9. Mom and Dad: Need to de-stress but, um… you’re really not that talented when it comes to art? No problem! Join us for a night of Bad Art and the best (worst?) piece of bad art will get a prize! If you’re looking to finally start completing that family tree, RELIC (the Ruth E. Lloyd Information Center) is a free, special collection devoted to genealogy and local history with a focus on Virginia and Prince William County, located at Bull Run Regional Library. RELIC will be hosting two programs in August: Genealogy 201: Beyond the Basics on Aug. 16 and Revolutionary Prince William County, 1765 – 1781

on Aug. 21. Have you thought about starting a business in Prince William County? Or maybe you’re looking for grant funding for your nonprofit organization? MAGIC, the Management and Government Information Center, located at the Chinn Park Regional Library, is a special collection and information service available to assist members of the community to start or grow a business, retrieve industry information and access laws and regulations. In spring 2018, Chinn Park Regional Library became part of the Foundation Center’s Funding Information Network, the nation's top searchable database that provides information on nearly 10,000 grant makers, accessible

from all Chinn Park Regional Library computers. Okay, okay. We get it. Your family vacation is in August! You want to sit by the pool! You just can’t make it into the library as much as you’d like. No problem! In addition to books, DVDs, and CDs that you can check out from your local library, you also have access to free digital apps like Hoopla and Libby. So, whether you want to spend the last remaining weeks of summer at your local branch or just want the ability to get a new book or movie right at your fingertips, we’ve got you covered.
