Eastern PWC water exceeds limit on ‘forever chemicals’ By Anya Sczerzenie Times Staff Writer
As the Environmental Protection Agency prepares to regulate a group of chemicals called PFAS in drinking water throughout the country, a preliminary test in 2021 showed that the water on the eastern side of Prince William County, which comes from the Occoquan Reservoir, was over the newly proposed limit. PFAS is an abbreviation for perfluoroalkyl and poly-
fluoroalkyl substances. These are chemicals that come from many products that people use every day, including nonstick pans, water-resistant clothing, fire-resistant foam and food packaging. Though their use in manufacturing has been phased out in the United States, they remain in the environment for a long time, and products containing them are still used.
Prince William Service Authority PFAS water testing
In May 2021, the PWCSA voluntarily participated in a Virginia Department of Health study to analyze PFAS in water samples. Samples were collected from its East and West systems and sent to an independent laboratory selected by the Virginia Department of Health. Results for PFOA and PFOS are below.

Prince William County’s crime rate in 2022 rose to its highest level since 2015, with an increase in aggravated assaults and homicides that Police Chief Peter Newsham calls “concerning”. In 2022, 20 people were killed in 15 separate incidents. That’s the highest one-year number of homicide victims in the county since 2016, when there were 22. The number has almost doubled from 11 homicides in 2021. “It’s very concerning to see 20 homicides in our community,” Newsham said during a presentation to the Prince William Board of County Supervisors on Tuesday, April 4. “That’s 20 unnecessary losses of life.” The majority of last year’s homicide victims - 16 - were shot to death, while two were stabbed. Most victims knew their killers, according to police information. Eighteen of See CRIME, page 2

Prince William County hires new fire chief By Jill Palermo
Times Staff Writer
Tom LaBelle, who most recently served as deputy chief of the Henrico County Division of Fire, will be Prince William County’s new fire and rescue chief effective May 1, county officials announced Tuesday. LaBelle’s hiring was announced at the Tuesday, April 4 meeting of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors. His annual salary will be $215,000, according to Rachel Johnson, a county spokeswoman. LaBelle has more than 30 years’ experience in emergency services organizations. He was hired by Henrico County in 2020, according to news reports. Prior to joining Henrico, LaBelle spent five years as the division chief for Albemarle County Fire Rescue, managing the executive board and volunteer components of its combination fire rescue system, according to a Prince William County news release. Prince William County’s Fire and Rescue System is comprised of the Department of Fire and Rescue and eight volunteer fire and rescue departments. These organizations work together to provide high-quality and efficient firefighting and emergency medical services to Prince William County and currently consists of a combination of 722 full-time employees and 391 operational volunteer personnel, the release said. As the county’s fire and rescue System chief, LaBelle will be responsible for fire, emergency medical services and emergency management services. The county’s combined fire and rescue system provides emergency incident opera-
Police chief: Rise in violent crime ‘concerning’ CRIME, from page 1 the 20 homicides have been closed with arrests, and two are still being investigated, though Newsham said one of the unsolved cases is likely “a few months” from being closed. The 2022 crime rate -- including all crimes, not just violent crimes — was 37.7 crimes per 1,000 residents. It rose from 32.9 per 1,000 in 2021, according to part of the 2022 crime report that was released April 4. The full 2022 annual crime report is expected to be released in the coming days, Newsham said. Though crime in the county dropped to its lowest level during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, it has been rising since then. Prior to the pandemic, it had been steadily falling every year. The 2022 crime rate is still slightly below Prince William County’s average over the past 15 years, however, which is 38.9 per 1,000 resi-

The fire and rescue system also provides fire, injury and illness prevention for the community, along with training and education programs for the preparedness of department personnel, the release said. “Chief LaBelle’s experience in public safety speaks to his understanding and insights in managing a combination fire system and building community relationships through engagement and public service,” Board of Supervisors Chair Ann Wheeler, D-At Large, said in a statement. “We look forward to him joining us in Prince William County.” LaBelle has a bachelor’s degree from Hartwick College and is working toward a master’s degree in in homeland security from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. He graduated from the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program in 2019 and holds multiple certifications, the release said. dents, and remains below the state average, which is estimated to be 47.3 crimes per 1,000 residents in 2022, Newsham said. Arrests have also increased 14.8% from 2021, with 8,043 total arrests in the county in 2022, Newsham said. Juveniles comprised slightly more of the arrests in 2022 than in 2021, rising from 6.2% to 7.3% of overall arrests. But juvenile arrests remain lower than in 2020, when they comprised 10.1% of arrests. “We have a lot of good kids that are doing the right thing every single day,” Newsham said. “If they’re only 7% of arrests, they’re not the problem. Adults are the problem.” Newsham said that the police department hopes to reduce future gun violence by holding offenders accountable, citing the department’s high closure rate on homicide cases. “People involved in gun violence often have a criminal history, often a violent criminal history,” Newsham told the Prince William Times in an interview after his presentation. Newsham told the county board there has been a worrying increase
Eastern PWC drinking water exceeds limit on ‘forever chemicals’ Detection methods for PFAS in water have been developed and refined only in recent years and can now detect parts per trillion. According to Stanley Grant, the director of the Occoquan Watershed Monitoring Laboratory, the limit for PFAS in water is very close to the amount that testing can actually detect—meaning that any PFAS detected in water is a problem. During a 2021 sampling of water from the 17 largest systems in the state, water from the Occoquan Reservoir, the source of drinking water for about 850,000 residents in eastern Prince William and Fairfax counties, showed higher levels of PFAS than water coming from Lake Manassas, which serves the western side of the county. Water sourced from Lake Manassas was shown to be below the reporting limit for all PFAS substances, which either means no PFAS were detected, or the amount was not high enough to present a risk. According to Grant, the Occoquan Reservoir has higher levels of PFAS because the water flows slower and closer to urbanized areas, allowing more PFAS from homes and businesses to collect in the water. “Occoquan is an impoundment, so it slows the water down,” Grant said. “I would also say the degree of urbanization plays a role.” PFAS are a type of “forever chemical” that can now be found “ubiquitously in the environment,” according to Greg Prelewicz, the planning manager at Fairfax Water. PFAS chemicals are in many places in the environment, including in food, and are even found in human blood. They are associated with an increased risk of cancer,
thyroid issues and issues in pregnancy, according to the EPA, along with a decreased response to vaccinations. Because PFAS are a relatively new concern, there are not many reliable methods to treat water to remove them since normal drinking water filters do not remove PFAS. Some methods for treating water are currently being developed, as well as new methods to test for PFAS. The EPA lists some methods to treat water for PFAS, including several types of filters and chemical additives, but these are currently being studied. “We’re just starting to learn how harmful they are,” said Elizabeth Ward, vice chair of Prince William County’s Sustainability Commission. The county’s water sources were first tested for PFAS in 2013, but they were not detected until recently. This is not because there are necessarily more PFAS now, but rather because the technology to detect them has gotten better, Grant said Prelewicz and Grant both say that they plan to do additional and more in-depth testing for PFAS in the future, as more technology becomes available. Fairfax Water, which cleans and treats the water from the Occoquan Reservoir before it reaches area homes, is supporting efforts to keep PFAS from entering the waterways in the first place and is voluntarily testing for the substance, according to Susan Miller, a Fairfax Water spokeswoman. Fairfax Water is also in the process of evaluating treatment methods to remove PFAS from water, according to Miller, but it is unknown which methods will eventually be used. in guns stolen from vehicles. In 2022, 136 guns were stolen from vehicles, leading police to warn residents against keeping their firearms in their cars. “You can’t leave firearms in your cars,” Newsham said. “If you do, you’re leaving it to be used by anoth-
er person.” Newsham said that although the department is concerned about guns taken from cars, none of the homicides in 2022 were committed with guns stolen in that way. Reach Anya Sczerzenie at asczerzenie@fauquier.com

Incidents of antisemitism in Prince William County rose sharply in 2022, rising to 11 from four the previous year. In Fauquier County, there were two antisemitic incidents in 2022, up from zero in 2021. The increase reflected a nationwide trend, according to a recent report from the Anti-Defamation League. According to the ADL, 2022 had the highest number of antisemitic incidents on record since 1979 when the organization began tracking them. Incidents nearly doubled in Virginia and Maryland since last year, the ADL report said. In Prince William County, incidents of antisemitic harassment and vandalism included swastika graffiti—on highway sound barriers, overpasses and in a high school bathroom – as well as threatening emails sent to a local synagogue. The majority of incidents reported in both Prince William and Fauquier counties, however, involved the distribution of pamphlets from Patriot Front, which is “one of the United States’ most visible white supremacist groups” and is responsible for most white supremacist material distributed in the country, the ADL website said. Rabbi Shmuly Perlstein, of the Chabad of Greater Gainesville, says that even though his congregation has not had any incidents this year, he is still taking precautions to keep events safe. “We don’t have our own center, so the security concerns are different,” Perlstein said. “We try to keep the locations of our events members-only and not put them out on public forums. We also have security at our events, and we have a good

The ADL counted 3,697 incidents throughout the country in 2022, which is a 36% increase nationwide since 2021, in which 2,717 incidents of antisemitism were reported. There was one fatality attributed to antisemitism in 2022. Many of the antisemitic incidents were reported in states such as New York and California, which have large populations as well as large Jewish populations. In Virginia, 69 incidents were reported in 2022, up from 46 in 2021.

There were no antisemitism-related physical attacks or assaults reported in Prince William or Fauquier counties. Perlstein says that the local Jewish community is small, and he would rather focus on spreading positivity and reaching out to new members, including those who do not have a community with whom to celebrate the Jewish holidays. “As disturbing and gut-wrenching as these incidents are, there’s a lot of beauty,” Perlstein said. “Passover begins next week—it marks the greatest story of oppression and freedom. In every generation we stand up to attacks, and we endure.” Reach Anya Sczerzenie at asczerzenie@fauquier.com

Winsome Earle-Sears touts early voting, school choice at GOP event By Cher Muzyk
Times Staff Writer
Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears touted the importance of early voting and voiced support for school choice before an energetic crowd of about 250 local Republicans gathered in Woodbridge Saturday for the Prince William Republican Committee’s annual Lincoln-Reagan Dinner. The fundraising event was held seven months before the Nov. 7 general election when all of Virginia’s 140 General Assembly seats will be up for grabs in addition to more than 20 local government seats. Earle-Sears, 59, urged the crowd to embrace early voting, cautioning that their party’s messaging must change: “Absentee ballots are killing us, people,” she said. Challenging Republicans’ wariness about early voting, Sears said she’d lead by example. “I am not this year doing anything that looks like me taking pictures at the polls and voting,” she said. “I’m voting absentee.” Some in the crowd responded with uncomfortable laughter and others muttered to each other, seemingly in disbelief. Traditionally, conservative voters have not taken advantage of early voting methods, opting instead to vote in person on Election Day. In recent years, Republican voters became even more reluctant to cast early ballots as a result of former president Donald Trump’s repeated
but baseless claims that early voting, particularly mail-in absentee voting, is rife with fraud. Earle-Sears said Republicans must use and encourage mail-in and early voting to even the playing field during Virginia’s 45-day election season. “Think about it. One (party) voting for 45 days … and the rest of us, we only show up on Tuesday -- one day,” she said. “(Who) do you think is most likely to win? The one who has 45 opportunities at the pie or the one who has one?” Earle-Sears also said that by encouraging Republicans to vote early or by mail, candidates can better allocate resources in the last weeks of their campaigns by focusing on those who haven’t voted. “(Democrats are) serious about winning, and we have to be equally serious about winning,” Sears said. “‘Souls to the Polls’ … you know how it works. You go to church and then everybody drives over to the polls. Well, why aren’t we doing the same thing? These are strategies that we have to employ to win,” she said. To even out wide margins between Democratic and Republican votes ahead of Election Day, “We’ve got to have change,” Sears said. “So, until the rules change … we have to work under the new system that we have. We can’t keep saying ‘Well, I only vote on Election Day.’ It’s not working.” Sears said that to accomplish the Youngkin administration’s goals

Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears speaks to a crowd of about 250 at the Prince William Republican Committee’s annual Lincoln-Reagan Dinner on Saturday, April 1. during its final two years, three more Republicans are needed in the state Senate, which now has a 21-19 Democratic majority. “If we don’t get the majority in the Senate, it’ll just be more of the same,” she said. Earle-Sears is Virginia’s first Black female lieutenant governor. Born in Jamaica, she is a U.S. Marine veteran and was the first Black Republican to be elected to the Virginia House of Delegates, serving one term, from 2002 to 2004. Earle-Sears has been a proponent of school choice, including vouchers, which she says would give low-income families more opportunity. At the combination celebration and fundraiser, Sears highlighted school choice as a Youngkin admin-
istration priority. “We want school choice, and we want it now!” Sears exclaimed to a cheering audience at the Old Hickory Golf Club. School choice has long been the subject of fierce debate in Virginia. Advocates say school choice allows public education funds to follow students to a setting that best fits their needs whether that’s a private school, charter school or home-schooling. Opponents argue it diverts money from already-underfunded public schools. Virginia law requires local school boards to approve charter schools, which so far has kept the number of charter schools operating across the state to just seven, according to the Virginia Department of Education website. DeSantis edges out Trump in local GOP’s 2024 presidential straw poll By Cher Muzyk
Prince William County Republican Committee’s 2024 straw poll results:
Times Staff Writer
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis won the most support as a 2024 presidential candidate among local Republicans gathered Saturday, April 1 for the annual Lincoln-Reagan fundraising dinner in Woodbridge. Former President Donald Trump came in a close second in the poll. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley tied for a distant third in the poll, which was taken among the 250 attendees at the event held in the Old Hickory Golf Club in Woodbridge. Chair of the Prince William Republican Committee Denny Daugherty said that his committee included 12 potential presidential candidates in its straw poll who are “widely reported to be interested” in getting the Republican nomination for president in 2024. When DeSantis and Trump won the top two spots, Daugherty said he wasn’t surprised. Even though it’s a long time before the 2024 primaries, “It seems to confirm that at this stage, it’s pretty much a two-candidate race,” Daugherty said. DeSantis came out on top because of his “success with the Florida economy and government and winning a landslide reelection last year,” Daugherty opined. Daugherty said he thought Trump’s criminal prosecution after being indicted by a Manhattan grand jury on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in connection to allegations that he paid an adult film star hush money may turn out to be an electoral asset for the former president. “I think that Trump has been helped by the fact that he’s being treated badly by the prosecutor in

Former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. New York and in several other jurisdictions. He’s also constantly getting picked on by Congress and the media,” he said. “I think there’s an element of that that boosted his strength.” Whether Trump can turn the first arrest and criminal prosecution of a former president into a political advantage remains to be seen. However, Daugherty thinks it’s certainly possible. The prosecution “has won him a lot of defenders -- our own Governor (Youngkin), among others,” Daugherty said, calling the case against Trump “flimsy.” Youngkin came to Trump’s defense shortly after Trump’s indictment was announced last week, writing on Twitter that the indictment was done for “pure political gain” and asserting that “arresting a presidential candidate on a manufactured basis should not happen in America.” Supervisor Yesli Vega, R-Coles, also voiced support for Trump by tweeting a meme of a flag labeled “BANANA REPUBLIC” and featuring a banana and a yellow star. Trump’s spokesperson,
Liz Harrington, said Trump’s indictment was evidence of a “banana republic.” Trump endorsed Vega last fall in her unsuccessful run for U.S. Congress in Virginia’s 7th District, calling Vega “a WARRIOR for America First” and a “strong Republican Voice against Violent Crime and all other of the things that are destroying our Nation.” Other local Republicans have distanced themselves from Trump. Republican Supervisor Jeanine Lawson, R-Brentsville, called herself “a proud Ron DeSantis Republican” and “a proud Glenn Youngkin Republican,” after announcing her bid for chair of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors last month. Ken Cuccinelli, who was attorney general of Virginia from 2010 to 2014 and served as acting deputy of homeland security in the Trump administration, launched a super political action committee urging DeSantis to run for president in 2024. Called “Never Back Down,” the PAC has raised $30 million since March 9, as Cuccinelli has traversed the country rounding up support for a DeSantis presidential run, according to the New York Times. Winsome Earle-Sears touts early voting, school choice at GOP event SEARS, from page 4 Republicans have tried for years to take the power away from local school boards but have been thwarted by Democrats in the state legislature. As recently as this year, Sen. Mark D. Obenshain, R-26th, of Harrisonburg, introduced SJ 254, a constitutional amendment that would grant the Virginia Board of Education the power to establish charter schools within all Virginia school divisions. The bill was defeated by Democrats in committee. Earle-Sears said parents should have the option to choose what kind of schooling is best for their children. “If we don’t win back the Senate, we can’t get (school choice),” she said. Earle-Sears also decried schools’ move to add instructional programs other than academics, such as equity initiatives. “We’ve got teachers who all they want to do is teach. … They love the profession. And all this social stuff has just driven them out of the job. … It’s too much,” she said. Earle-Sears said equity is unfair because it means “equal outcomes.” “And by the way, if you say that the reason a child can’t learn is because of their socioeconomic problems; well, hello? Slavery. You don’t get any worse than slavery as a socioeconomic problem. And yet the slaves wanted a good education because they knew that if they’d gotten that education, they could literally write their ticket to freedom. So, no excuses,” Sears added.

Other speakers at the dinner included Carrie Rist, a Republican running for at-large chair of the Prince William County School Board, and Matt Lowery, a Republican running for Prince William commonwealth’s attorney. Rist, a mother of five, an attorney and a military spouse, likened Prince William County students to children from “broken homes” who deserve affirmation and an unconditional apology from “leaders across the county.” Rist told the crowd she would be the first leader to apologize to local students. “I will be the leader to say to the children in our schools, ‘Kids, I’m sorry you had fear. I’m sorry your schools were shut down. I’m sorry you were isolated from friends and
family. I’m sorry that you’re behind academically and socially. I’m sorry your National Merit Award was taken away from you. I’m sorry you did not feel safe in school. I’m sorry you’ve been exposed to sexually explicit materials, and I’m sorry you were used as a political pawn.’” While there have been no accusations that National Merit Awards were “taken away” from students, Prince William County Superintendent LaTanya McDade publicly apologized in January that 28 students from Battlefield, Patriot, Colgan and Forest Park high schools had not received a timely notification that they received letters of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program. In accordance with a new state law, the Prince William County School Board in early January adopted a policy requiring schools to
review all instructional materials for items that meet the state’s definition of “sexually explicit materials” so that a list of such items can be made available for public review by next school year. Rist quoted the Bible and proclaimed her belief that “God is lifting us up because God is never done with his creation, his schools and his kids.” Lowery, a father of two and an attorney who has worked extensively as both a prosecutor and a criminal defense attorney, told the crowd he is running because Commonwealth’s Attorney Amy Ashworth (D) “has failed us.” Lowery, whose campaign slogan is “For the people, not the criminals,” also charged that crime is not down under Ashworth’s leadership. “Anybody live in Woodbridge? Anybody dodged a bullet?” Lowery asked of the crowd, which responded with sporadic laughter. Calling for Republican victories at the state level, Lowery said: “Republican control of the General Assembly will mean passing laws … to return the criminal law to a pro-community rather than a pro-criminal posture.” “People in the community want more government engagement. They want more policing. They want better public safety. In 2023, Republican candidates have a chance to turn things around,” Lowery said. Reach Cher Muzyk at cmuzyk@ fauquier.com

Police make 2 arrests in back-to-back weekend shootings Staff Reports Prince William County police made two recent arrests in connection with two shootings that occurred within the span of four hours on Sunday, March 26. Two people were injured, including a woman who was apparently caught in the middle of an exchange of gunfire. Both of the victims suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, according to Master Police Officer Renee Carr, a Prince William County police spokeswoman. The first shooting was reported at 1:37 p.m. on Sunday, March 26 in the 13600 block of Kitty Hawk Way in Woodbridge. A 28-yearold woman was hit by a bullet fired among “multiple shots” exchanged between two groups of people involved in an argument, Carr said in a news release. Both groups dispersed on foot, while some fled in a white vehicle. When responding officers located the suspect vehicle nearby and attempted a stop, the driver disregarded the officer’s emergency equipment and continued driving. Eventually, the vehicle stopped in the area of Cove Landing Drive, where the occupants fled on foot, Carr said. After a brief foot pursuit, one of the occupants was detained and arrested. The others were not found
despite a police K-9 search the area, Carr said. Alhajie Alpha Kamara, 19, of Woodbridge, was arrested in connection with the incident but has not been charged with the shooting. His bond status was unavailable Wednesday.

Police task force seizes drugs, guns from Catlett home Staff Reports The Blue Ridge Narcotics and Gang Task Force, working with local law-enforcement agencies, recently arrested four people and seized illegal drugs and seven handguns during a multi-jurisdictional narcotics operation that crossed Prince William and Fauquier County lines. On Thursday, March 23, officers executed a search warrant at a residence on Toms Way in the Catlett area of Fauquier County. As a result of the operation, police seized 104 grams of pressed fentanyl pills, 43 grams of crack cocaine, 38.5 grams of powder cocaine, 29.5 grams of methadone and about 52 grams of marijuana, according to a Virginia State Police news release. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
A No. 1 ranking we shouldn’t be proud of USA No. 1! USA No. 1! USA No. 1!! This refrain, often chanted at the Olympics (for example when the men’s basketball team loaded with NBA stars beat a small Eastern European country) is a pretty good summary of the American spirit: enthusiasm bordering on arrogance. It’s a seemingly harmless phrase, but I couldn’t help but hear it in my head when yet again children were massacred in their school – this time in Nashville. Why is it that the greatest country on Earth allows its children to be murdered, over and over and over again? No other Western
nation allows this insanity. But in America, we repeat a similar pattern after each school shooting: We are outraged; we mourn; we lower our flags and then we do nothing to prevent the next tragedy. School shootings have become part of our national story. I support the Second Amendment, but as with all freedoms, I support restrictions. Our model isn’t working. Our children are dying. Our approach needs to change. USA No. 1! Yes, we are – in school shootings. JOHN HANNUM Delaplane
In appreciation of our gardeners Forty-something years ago, my fiancé gave me a hanging fern to adorn the 9-foot by 10-foot room I was renting. I loved how it visually dominated its corner with lush jade green and gave that forest dimension to the room. It reminded me of the transformational couple of years I had spent working outdoors on a farm, especially the aroma after the first spring rain. Just this week, I learned that this first smell of rain has a name: “Petrichor.” The word comes from the Greek words “petra,” meaning stone, and “ichor,” which in Greek mythology refers to the golden fluid that flows in the veins of the immortals. Even the word speaks to the rock steady patience of a gardener and the life and beauty they bring to their surroundings. Well, back to the hanging fern. Within two weeks I had transformed my lush green into more of a desert brown, and it had more
of a crispy feel to it. I lamented its loss and realized I did not have the patience of a gardener. So, I married one instead. So, every spring when my now wife begins her perennial rituals to transform our yard from the sleep of winter to the waking of spring, when the petrichor first stimulates the olfactory sensory neurons, I’m filled again with appreciation for patience and persistence of the horticulturalists in this area. We get the visual rewards for the years of care and labor that are invested in all of the well-tended yards. The sea of daffodils that rise on Blackwell Road, the rhododendrons on Winchester Street that urge you to take their route home and the azaleas, everywhere. So, for your love of plants and your willingness to share it, thank you, gardeners all! MARK MCCORMACK Warrenton
EARTH DAY 2023
In support of Deshundra Jefferson for county board chair The Prince William County circus is never short on sideshows. In eastern Prince William, we’re gambling on “The Rose”. In western Prince William, we’ve bet the house on data centers. The latest Prince William County Police Department report shows our violent crime rate has skyrocketed since 2019. Good luck getting those winnings home from the casino. Our absence-of-planning office is absolutely melting down after a series of controversial decisions that prioritized developer exploitation over prudent land use. Senior planning staff run for their professional lives without a word of explanation. Are even the exiles muzzled by non-disclosure agreements? Just when you think you need a breath of fresh air, there isn’t any. Despite our sustainability goals, Prince William County is one of two Northern Virginia counties where greenhouse gas emissions are actually increasing. As if no one’s paying attention,
our earth-moving and clear-cutting county chair dons environmental lipstick to gloss over an abysmal record before a Green Business Council invented by her husband. And when you’re drowning, you can always count on our self-serving friends along Pageland Lane to throw you an anchor. Ken Knarr has generously stepped forward to claim Pete Candland’s financially conflicted “what’s-in-it-for-me?” role in the Republican primary. This stunt is most likely designed to dilute the burgeoning opposition to our beleaguered chair. For all these “services,” you got a tax increase. In the alternate universe of Ann Wheeler, this bedlam is supposed to merit her re-election. She has inexplicably chosen to run ON a record most would be running FROM. Pulling off this con requires an awful lot of voter disengagement. Don’t fall for it. Vote for Deshundra Jefferson in the June 20th Democratic primary. BILL WRIGHT Gainesville

McKay’s 40-year story is just beginning, owners say A new chapter unfolds at popular used bookstore in Manassas By Sondra Anzalone Contributing Writer
Picture it: It’s 1983 in Centreville, Virginia. Frances Anderson, a single mom, opens a used bookstore and names it after her two children, one of whom is Richard. There is no “Richard McKay,” although people call and ask to speak with him often. The only man in this women-owned business with a connection to the store’s conception is Dwight Anderson, Frances Anderson’s second husband and the father to her third child, Carolanne (Anderson) Petrusiak, 37. Dwight Anderson hand-built “over 90% of the store’s wooden shelving,” which he custom-designed to avoid domino-effect destruction, Petrusiak said. “He still works for us.” Page the cat, once a resident of the Centreville store, became the mascot and is featured on the store’s logo, which recently morphed to include the recycling symbol. The cat retired when he became obviously frustrated by the raucousness and constant attention of the store’s young customers, Petrusiak said. The story expanded into a second location in Manaport Plaza, 8345 Sudley Road, Manassas, also known as the Barnes & Noble shopping center. The original, smaller Centreville location closed in 2004. The Manassas store has been McKay’s sole location since 2009. McKay’s, as it is now known, is a 20,000 square-foot store that rivals the footprint of most public libraries in Prince William County. And it’s almost just as organized, as evidenced by the theme-based shelving system

She co-owns the store with Danielle Parody, 39. Petrusiak manages various aspects of the business, including the financials, she said. Her favorite parts of the job include setting up the monthly theme displays and “finding new things customers will get excited about,” she said. Petrusiak said she enjoys the eclectic, friendly staff and customers who share similar passions for both mainstream genres and cult classics. When her mother first opened the store in Centreville, it sold only used books, Petrusiak said. The store now offers music, movies, board and video games, puzzles, toys and more. This spring, the store will sell native seeds to attract pollinators, Petrusiak said. McKay’s 40-year story doesn’t
end here. It’s only just begun. McKay’s isn’t just about finding a new home for things people love, said Petrusiak, it provides a way for customers to reduce waste and increase sustainability while also promoting literacy. For example, FRESH Reads in Fauquier County, a nonprofit that connects children with books, picks up boxes of gently used books each week, Petrusiak said. And public-school teachers serving Manassas, Prince William, Fauquier, Loudoun and Fairfax counties are eligible to receive store credit to shop for their schools. CliffsNotes version:
Title: McKay Used Books Celebrates 40 Years Setting: 1983 to present, first in Centreville, then at 8345 Sudley Road in Manassas. Plot: Small, women-owned business thrives for 40 years and still serves the community. Anderson opened the “buy-sell-trade store” with only books but expanded over the years to offer music, board and video games, puzzles, toys and more. Page the cat lived at the original location and had a long happy life while his owners provided an environmentally friendly service to the community. Plot twist: There is no Richard McKay! OSBOURN BOYS START OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT After breakout season, Eagles open 6-0 led by Noseworthy, Sotelo, Rivas By Matthew Proctor Times Staff Writer
A year after exploding with a memorable 17-14 season, Osbourn High boys soccer coach Brandon Calandra has seen his Eagles kick into high gear again. At 6-0, Osbourn has roared out of the gate, seizing early control of the Cedar Run District at 4-0 thanks to a recent 2-1 win over Patriot. “Overall, I’ve been happy with the way we’ve been coming out,” Calandra said. “We come out with high intensity and the guys usually are pretty good at executing our game plans day in and day out. Last year Osbourn made the Class 6 state tournament for the first time since 2008, falling in the quarterfinals to Landstown on penalty kicks. With three all-state honorees back in Cooper Noseworthy, Noel Sotelo and Angel Rivas, Osbourn is seen as one of the best teams in a state full of powerful squads. “This year we’re viewed as more of a favorite than we have been in years past,” he said. “So far they’ve taken on the role of being the top dog and trying to keep it and maintain that and we know we just got to show up.” Osbourn’s stellar start includes wins over Cardinal District foes Potomac 1-0 and Freedom (Woodbridge) 3-0 to open the season. They next topped John Champe 8-0 and Freedom (South Riding) 5-2 in their first Cedar Run District matches. Prior to spring break, they beat Gainesville 3-0 and Patriot 2-1. Despite losing a large senior crew from last year’s powerful squad, Osbourn returns 14 to build a unit that has both experience and chemistry. Noseworthy, one of the team captains, runs the show offensively in the midfield. With six goals and three assists in six games, he leads the team in both categories. “Cooper is everything you want in a player. He’s got big size, he uses it to his advantage. Great one-v-one skills, controls the tempo of the pace of attack. There’s not enough good things I can say about him,” Calandra said.
‘This group of seniors ... have played together for a really long time and it definitely shows.’ -BRANDON CALANDRA, Osbourn coach

Dangerous senior striker Noel Sotelo is one of Osbourn’s three returning all-state players. He’s got five goals already as the Eagles have opened 6-0. Osbourn’s leading goal scorer last year, Sotelo is a predatory striker who has already put five balls in the back of the net. “This being his senior year, he’s kind of putting everything on and off the field together. He’s finding a lot more success early on. He’s definitely one of our top finishers,” Calandra said. Calandra believes Osbourn’s defensive unit is the strongest on the team, and that group is anchored by Rivas. A versatile player who can play anywhere along the back line, Rivas is described as an assistant coach on the field who understands situations and positioning. The rest of the starting lineup includes goalie Armando Cervantes, a junior captain who starts in net for the second year in a row.
Osbourn’s breakout season in 2022 saw the Eagles win 17 games, including a 6-2 win over Colonial Forge in the Class 6 Region B final. Their superb season ended at home to Landstown on penalty kicks in the Class 6 quarterfinals.

Ventura is a returning starter who works well with Rivas in the center while Lopez-Esquivel is a skilled oneon-one defender on the outside. Calandra typically starts three juniors in the midfield. Alongside Noseworthy, Dany Reyes plays in the middle with Michael Olguin and Jaiden Borba rotating at the final spot. Reyes is new to the center mid position but has picked it up well and is a great compliment to Noseworthy. In Calandra’s system, the Eagles play a fast style of soccer with the midfield responsible for relaying quick passes up the field to set up the attack. “It just comes down to moving the ball quickly, playing one to two touch soccer. That’s what we really try to build off of and just quick pace when we’re in the attack,” he said. Rounding out the lineup is a pair of senior forwards who play alongside Sotelo. Erith Garcia plays the center forward position and is a solid finisher who has already tapped in four goals, while Juan Reyes is smart, skilled and always in the right position to set up the attack. “I think we were a lot deeper last year, but I still think we have a very solid team. This group of seniors that are playing together have played together for a really long time, and it definitely shows,” Calandra said. There will be hurdles along the way, but the Eagles are hungry to return to states. “We’re definitely capable of it. I don’t think there’s any secret that that’s our goal. We want to get to where we were (last year) and further,” Calandra said.
