Biden bows out of 2024 race; endorses VP Kamala Harris
State and local Democratic officials praised President Joe Biden for his “patriotism” and “courage” Sunday in the wake of his historic decision to drop his reelection bid amid concerns about his fitness for office. After Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to succeed him, Virginia’s Democratic elected officials, as well as its slate of delegates to the Democratic National Convention next month, quickly coalesced around her candidacy. As a new data center project looms, Prince William County officials are taking steps toward formally marking the site of one of the region’s few historic African American horse show grounds. At its meeting July 17, the Prince William County Planning Commission unanimously recommended that a 37-acre parcel at Wellington Road and Freedom Center Boulevard be rezoned to allow for two new data centers. But because the area was once home to the Manassas Colored Horse Show Association, the commission also recommended that the developer pay for an interpretive site that will commemorate that unique history. The show grounds and racetrack sat on an 81-acre parcel that was purchased in 1854 by Susan Gaskins, an African American woman who was born free. See HISTORIC, page 2

Still no arrest in teen’s fatal shooting
Police are looking for a 2017 blue Elantra sports edition in connection with the fatal shooting of Ashlin Yamileth Paz, 18.
18-year-old woman was murdered in Buckhall-area neighborhood Staff Report A week after an 18-year-old woman was fatally shot in the mid-county Buckhall area, Prince William County police are asking the public to help find a vehicle believed to have been involved in the incident. Police are looking for a 2017 blue Hyundai Elantra sports edition with the Virginia license plate number TVT-8777 in connection with the fatal shooting, which occurred in the area of Pineview and Cregger roads, according to Lt. Jonathan Perok, a Prince William County police spokesman. The intersection is in the Dozer Mill Acres subdivision, which is off Moore Road in the Buckhall area outside Manassas. The vehicle could be in the Leesburg or Loudoun County area, Perok said in a news release. The victim, Ashlin Yamileth Paz, 18, of West Virginia, was found dead in a wooded area near a cul-de-sac
at about 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 18. She’d been shot twice in the head, according to police radio traffic. Detectives are actively investigating what led up to the shooting and want to speak with anyone who can aid in the investigation. It’s not clear what connection — if any — Paz had to Dozer Mill Acres or Prince William County, Perok said. Footage of the blue Elantra was captured via neighborhood security cameras before and after gunshots were heard in the neighborhood. “Preliminarily, the incident does not appear to be random,” Perok said in a news release Friday, July 19. The homicide is Prince William County’s 12th since Jan. 1 and the third involving a person under age 20 since June 1. In the others, a 17-yearold boy was shot and killed during a robbery attempt at a Woodbridge apartment complex, and a 15-yearold was killed in a shooting with

four victims in Dumfries. As of this time last year, Prince William County had 15 homicides, Perok said. Anyone with information about the investigation is asked to contact Prince William County police at 703-792-6500 or submit a tip online

Police release photos in deadly weekend carjacking Staff Report Police are releasing photos of a man they believed was involved in a deadly carjacking outside a Montclair-area apartment complex over the weekend that left a Dumfries man dead. Jose Vasquez Galvan, 37, died Monday after being run over by his SUV, a 1999 gold Lexus RX 300, on Saturday, July 20. Galvan was struck by the vehicle as it was being stolen from him outside the Oasis at Montclair apartment complex behind the Target at the Fortuna shopping center on Va. 234. Police located the vehicle on Tuesday morning in Woodbridge. They also released images of the suspect caught on surveillance cameras at the time of the incident.
Developers asked to mark historic Black horse show site HISTORIC, from page 1 Susan Gaskins’ son, Frank Gaskins, helped found the Manassas Colored Horse Show Association and racetrack. It was at the center of what was once known as the “Wellington community,” an area that was home to free African Americans both before and after the Civil War. At the time of its operation, from about 1903 through the 1930s, the Manassas Colored Horse Show Association offered African Americans a place to show and race their horses and gather for carnivals and dances at a time when they were not welcome at such events in white communities. Last month, upon learning of the area’s history, the planning commission deferred the rezoning request until the county’s historical commission could further discuss the site. The historical commission asked

that the developer plan and fund an interpretive center that would include a stall with a statue of Frank Gaskins standing near a horse and holding a rein. It also suggested that the developer hire an exhibit designer to create the site and pay to maintain it. The site would include information about the Gaskins family, the horse show grounds and the African American Wellington community. Additionally, the historical commission would like to add a page on the county’s historic preservation website, detailing that history. During the planning commission’s meeting, Jonelle Cameron, an attorney for STACK data centers, said the company is willing to fund and meet the historical commission’s requests but has not yet drawn up legally binding “proffers” to do so. STACK will need to draft a detailed proposal before a hearing by the board of supervisors, explaining how it will highlight the history and legacy of the Gaskins family, the Manassas Colored Horse Show Association grounds and the Welling-
Officers responded to the Oasis at Montclair apartment complex, in the 16400 block of Stedham Circle, at 6:53 p.m. on Saturday, July 20 in response to a hit-and-run crash. The police investigation determined that Galvan was approached by an unknown individual while he was standing outside of his vehicle, according to Master Police Officer Renee Carr, a Prince William County police spokeswoman. At one point, the suspect got into Galvan’s vehicle and began to drive in reverse. Galvan grabbed onto the vehicle before the SUV struck another unoccupied vehicle. As the SUV continued forward, Galvan was thrown off and then run over, Carr said in a news release.
ton community to meet the historical commission’s requests. The planning commission also asked STACK to work with the historical commission, the county’s department of parks & recreation and the office of historic preservation to determine the location of the exhibit
to ensure it is accessible to the public. The supervisors will have the final say on the rezoning and how the historic site will be commemorated. A date for a public hearing and vote has not yet been set. Reach Evelyn Mejia at emejia@ fauquier.com

Lots of new dining options coming to Manassas Park By Cher Muzyk Staff Writer
A bunch of new dining options are coming to downtown Manassas Park, with opening dates slated in about a year. From a Peruvian lounge to Dutch doughnuts to a new location for the beloved local Italian restaurant Tortino Mare, Manassas Park’s roundup of new eateries is sure to get foodies excited for summer 2025 dining plans. The new eateries will join Lil’ Bowl, an authentic Thai and Japanese restaurant, that already opened in downtown Manassas Park on May 31. Lil’ Bowl offers a mix of fresh Asian foods, including curries, sushi, ramen and poke bowls. It’s located at 9121 Manassas Drive and is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. Jirani Coffeehouse will open its second location on the first floor of the new city hall adjacent to Park Central’s open-air plaza. It will have the “same atmosphere and vibe” as the original Jirani that was next to the train tracks in Old Town Manassas, said Keith Nguyen, Manassas Park’s interim city manager. Nguyen suggested people look for joint programming with the Manassas Park library once Jirani opens. La Finca Mexican Restaurant will also open its second location on the first floor of city hall. La Finca will offer the same signature margaritas, Mexican eats and fun atmo-

The All American Steakhouse & Sports Theater will open in a space next to city hall. This will be Virginia’s third location of the family-friendly casual dining steakhouse. It features dry-aged, hand-cut steaks in a sports-bar-themed atmosphere. The rest of the new establishments have signed leases to open in Parq 170, which is in the heart of Park Central, across the street from Manassas Park’s new city hall. Tortino Mare, a fine-dining Italian restaurant, is reopening as an anchor restaurant in Parq 170. It was formerly located in western Manas-
sas Park but closed last July. Back will be its crisp white tablecloths, sophisticated table service and gourmet Italian cuisine. Larcomar Café Lounge will offer authentic Peruvian dishes, pastries and coffee as well as cocktails and mocktails. Inspired by the rich heritage of the Peruvian culture, it aims to provide a space for guests to enjoy good food and good company. Larcomar Café Lounge plans to host pop-up activities such as art classes and “paint and sip” events. In the dessert category is Sweet Treats, a mom-and-pop ice cream shop that will serve ice cream, ice cream cakes, cookies and smoothies. The concept is to offer a vari-
ety of ice cream that can be mixed with toppings on a frozen marble slab. Think a hybrid of Cold Stone Creamery and Baskin Robbins with their own unique spin, Nguyen said. Finally, possibly the most highly anticipated eatery is Yoder’s Dutch Delights. This will be the first brick-and-mortar location for Yoder’s, which until now has offered its Amish-inspired, handmade, glazed doughnuts only from its food truck at regional farmers markets. Nguyen said it was quite a boon for Manassas Park to land Yoder’s, which already has a cult following. Reach Cher Muzyk at cmuzyk@ fauquier.com
Record of Decision Available for Site UXO 019 (Grenade Field)
Marine Corps Installations National Capital Region Marine Corps Base Quantico, Quantico, Virginia The United States Department of the Navy announces the availability of the Record of Decision (ROD) for Site UXO 019 (Grenade Field) located on the Mainside of Marine Corps Installations National Capital Region - Marine Corps Base Quantico (MCBQ). The ROD documents the Navy’s selected remedy for addressing potential contamination from past use and/or disposal of munitions at the site. The selected remedy is limited surface removal of munitions and explosives of concern (which was completed in 2021) and implementation of land use controls. Using a metal detector, potential munitions items were removed from recreational trails and a 2.3-acre contractor staging area within the UXO 019 area in 2021 under a Time-Critical Removal Action (TCRA). One munitions item (an MK1A1 practice hand grenade), which was ultimately determined not to pose an explosive hazard, was recovered as part of the 2021 TCRA. Land use controls will include installing warning signs, conducting training, conducting annual site inspections, requiring Excavation Permit Requests for any potential excavation activities, and restricting potential future land uses. The effectiveness of this remedy will be reviewed every five years. Prior to selecting the remedy defined in the ROD, a Proposed Remedial Action Plan describing the different remedial alternatives considered and the proposed remedy was made publicly available, and a public meeting and comment period were held. No comments or questions on the plan were submitted. The ROD has been reviewed and approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. For More Information The ROD and the Administrative Record file for this site, which includes all documents used as the basis for this decision, are available on the public website (https://go.usa.gov/xSpNF). 4.
For approval of a biennial update procedure for Rider GEN with approval of two initial consecutive rate years: (i) April 1, 2025, through March 31, 2026 (“Rate Year 1”); and (ii) April 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027 (“Rate Year 2”) (“Request 4”); and
5.
For approval to project rate base, depreciation expense, and certain other costs into the rate year, and relief from the requirement to use the stipulated methodology approved in Case No. PUE-2015-00059, in this and future revenue requirements for Rider GEN and other cases on a going-forward basis (“Request 5”).
In Case No. PUE-2011-00073, the Commission approved a certificate of public convenience and necessity for major unit modifications of theAltavista, Hopewell, and Southampton biomass units, and Rider B for the recovery of costs associated with the modifications. The units became operational in 2013. Since that initial application, Dominion has filed annual or biennial Rider B updates. Rider B was last approved in Case No. PUR-2022-00088, which adopted rate years commencing April 1, 2023, and ending March 31, 2025. The Commission approved a certificate of public convenience and necessity for the Brunswick County Power Station, and Rider BW for the recovery of costs associated with the station, in Case No. PUE-2012-00128. The Brunswick County Power Station became operational in 2016. Since its initial application, Dominion has filed annual or biennial Rider BW updates. Rider BW was last approved in Case No. PUR-2021-00239, which adopted rate years commencing September 1, 2022, and ending August 31, 2024. The Commission approved a certificate of public convenience and necessity for the Greensville County Power Station, and Rider GV for the recovery of costs associated with the station, in Case No. PUE-2015-00075. The Greensville County Power Station became operational in 2018. Since that initial application, Dominion has filed annual or biennial Rider GV updates. Rider GV was last approved in Case No. PUR-2023-00094, which adopted rate years commencing April 1, 2024, and ending March 31, 2026. In Case No. PUE-2015-00104, the Commission approved a certificate of public convenience and necessity for the US-2 Solar Facilities, and Rider US-2 for the recovery of costs associated with the US-2 Solar Facilities. The facilities became operational in 2016. Since that initial application, Dominion has filed annual or biennial Rider US-2 updates. Rider US-2 was last approved in Case No. PUR-202200164, which adopted rate years commencing September 1, 2023, and ending August 31, 2025. In Case No. PUR-2018-00101, the Commission approved a certificate of public convenience and necessity for the US-3 Solar Facilities, and Rider US-3 for the recovery of costs associated with the US-3 Solar Facilities, subject to certain conditions and requirements, including a performance guarantee. Colonial Trail West Solar became operational in 2019, and Spring Grove 1 Solar became operational in 2020. Since its initial petition, Dominion has filed annual Rider US 3 updates. Rider US 3 was last approved in Case No. PUR-2023-00137, which adopted a rate year commencing June 1, 2024, and ending May 31, 2025. In Case No. PUR-2019-00105, the Commission approved a certificate of public convenience and necessity for the US-4 Solar Facility, and Rider US-4 for the recovery of costs associated with the US-4 Solar Facility, subject to certain conditions and requirements, including a performance guarantee. The US-4 Facility became operational in 2021. Since its initial petition, Dominion has filed annual Rider US-4 updates. Rider US-4 was last approved in Case No. PUR-2023-00138, which adopted a rate year commencing June 1, 2024, and ending May 31, 2025. Dominion is seeking approval to construct and operate the LNG Storage Facility in Case No. PUR-2024-00096. Dominion asserts that the LNG Storage Facility would consist of LNG production, storage, and regasification facilities and would serve as a backup fuel source for the Brunswick County Power Station and Greensville County Power Station to support the stations’ operations and improve the reliability of the Company’s fleet. It is expected to be operational in 2027. Dominion is seeking to recover the costs of the LNG Storage Facility through Rider GEN. According to the Company, any revenue requirement associated with the LNG Storage Facility is contingent upon the Commission’s approval in Case No. PUR-2024-00096. With respect to Request 1, Dominion seeks approval of a new rate adjustment clause, designated Rider GEN, to recover the costs associated with the certain generating units. Specifically, Dominion seeks approval of actual and projected capital and operation and maintenance (“O&M”) expenditures for the biomass units, Brunswick County Power Station, Greensville County Power Station, the US-2 Solar Facilities, the US-3 Solar Facilities, and the US-4 Solar Facility, and approval of projected capital and O&M expenditures for the LNG Storage Facility, subject to subsequent true ups. In support thereof, Dominion provides: (i) a five year budget plan for the Rider GEN Facilities based on expected O&M expenditures, including costs for expected operating levels, staffing, planned outages, and minor capital improvements; and (ii) a five-year budget plan for expected capital expenditures associated with facility operations. The Company also provides construction cost reports for the US-3 Solar Facilities, the US-4 Solar Facility, and the LNG Storage Facility. As the other facilities have been operational for several years, projected construction expenditures are not included for those facilities. The Company also provides information on the performance for the US-3 Solar Facilities for the 2023 calendar year, and the performance of the US-4 Solar Facility for the period July 6, 2022 through December 31, 2023. With respect to Request 2, Dominion seeks approval to consolidate Riders B, BW, GV, US-2, US-3, and US-4, resulting in the recovery of costs of the Rider GEN Facilities through Rider GEN. Such consolidation would also result in the withdrawal of Riders B, BW, GV, US-2, US-3, and US-4. The Company asserts that the consolidation of these rate adjustment clauses is in the interest of judicial economy as it would reduce the administrative burden and costs of filing these cases separately.
With respect to Request 3, Dominion is requesting to extend the currently approved rate year for Rider BW from August 31, 2024, through March 31, 2025, to align with the proposed April 1, 2025, commencement of Rate Year 1 for Rider GEN. Additionally, as the rate years for Riders GV, US-2, US-3, and US-4 were approved for a period of time that goes beyond the beginning of Rate Year 1, the Company is requesting to end those riders effective April 1, 2025. The Company states that any revenue requirement impacts resulting from the change in these rate years would be accounted for in a true-up in a future Rider GEN proceeding. With respect to Request 4, Dominion seeks approval of a biennial update procedure for Rider GEN with approval of two initial rate years. The Company seeks approval of a total revenue requirement of $438,170,685 for recovery in Rider GEN for Rate Year 1. The Company is requesting a total revenue requirement of $311,006,139 for Rate Year 2. Dominion states that the proposed revenue requirements are consistent with the calculations approved in the most recent Riders B, BW, GV, US-2, US-3, and US-4 proceedings, except: (i) an updated revenue lag based on calendar year 2023 is used to calculate the cash working capital component of rate base, and (ii) the Company proposes to begin projecting rate base, depreciation expense, and certain other costs into the rate year. The latter change represents the Company’s Request 5. If the proposed Rider GEN revenue requirement for the rate years is approved, the impact on customer bills would depend on the customer’s rate schedule and usage. According to Dominion, implementation of its proposed Rider GEN for Rate Year 1 on April 1, 2025, would increase the bill of a typical residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours per month by approximately $1.00, compared to the combined total residential rates of the current Riders B, BW, GV, US-2, US-3, and US-4. For Rate Year 2, implementation of Rider GEN on April 1, 2026, would be an incremental decrease of $1.84 compared to Rate Year 1. The Company indicates it has calculated the proposed Rider GEN rates in accordance with the same methodology as used for those rates approved by the Commission with respect to the most recent revisions to Riders B, BW, GV, US-2, US-3, and US-4. Interested persons are encouraged to review Dominion’s Petition and supporting documents in full for details about these and other proposals. TAKE NOTICE that the Commission may apportion revenues among customer classes and/or design rates in a manner differing from that shown in the Petition and supporting documents and thus may adopt rates that differ from those appearing in the Company’s Petition and supporting documents. The Commission entered an Order for Notice and Hearing in this proceeding that, among other things, scheduled a public hearing on Dominion’s Petition. NTT GLOBAL DATA CENTERS
The Grove at Gainesville: Four buildings of about 550,000-square-feet are planned for the Grove at Gainesville. The first building is five football fields long and is more than double the size of most data centers.
County’s largest data center rises along I-66
Grove at Gainesville’ exemplifies demand for bigger buildings, more power By Peter Cary
Piedmont Journalism Foundation
Drivers heading along Interstate 66 near U.S. 29 in Gainesville might have noticed the enormous concrete structure rising from the ground in recent months. It’s the biggest data center building yet in Prince William County and one of the largest in all of Northern Virginia. The building, owned by NTT Global Data Centers, is a quarter mile long, 180 feet wide and 75 feet tall. It’s the first of four data centers planned for the site, which NTT is calling “The Grove at Gainesville” despite its removal of at least 40 acres of trees. The first building is the size of five football fields laid end-to-end. When all four data centers are up and operating, the complex will provide about 2 million square feet of floor space for servers and computers that will draw as much power as 150,000 homes. “Isn’t it a monster? It is enormous,” said one data center manager, who asked that his name not be used. He said he likes to drive out-of-town data center colleagues past the Grove at Gainesville for a look. An NTT spokesperson said the company does not comment on real estate projects. A data center is a warehouse filled with computer servers that store electronic data and provide the processing power that makes up the backbone of the internet. While at least two data centers in Loudoun County are bigger, and not all data centers in Prince William will be as huge, the complex points to where data center construction is heading: bigger buildings demanding more power. “Everybody’s going for the max,” said Supervisor Bob Weir, a Republican who represents the Gainesville District, where The Grove at Gainesville and several other data center developments are under construction. “Almost every application that has come in the door recently is asking for an increase” in height and size, he said. Plus, there are more of them. Across John Marshall Highway from NTT is the controversial Village Place Technology Park, whose four buildings, located directly behind a townhome neighborhood, have sparked outrage among area residents. The four buildings comprise 1.1 million square feet, which is about half the size of the Grove at Gainesville.
Huge data centers require huge amounts of power
The Grove at Gainesville, when fully built, will draw the energy of 150,000 homes. That’s according to a multiplier used by Dominion Energy, which says 1 megawatt is equivalent to the power needed by 250 homes. On July 17, the Prince William County Planning Commission advanced a plan for two new substations to power the complex, each of which can supply 300 megawatts of electricity. During the meeting, an NTT representative said the complex would require 600 megawatts at peak operation. Getting power to the new data center complex, as well as others under construction nearby, will require new electrical infrastructure costing in the millions. Dominion Energy is already planning to build a new 230-kilovolt transmission line that will extend from Wellington and Rollins Ford roads westward along Wellington to a substation next to the Grove at Gainesville. Electricity from that substation will provide start-up power to the complex and fully power others underway or planned nearby. — PETER CARY
Also, nearby is the Hillwood Camping Park, where developer Chuck Kuhn is asking to rezone 82 acres for new data centers. Next door to NTT is land slated for the John Marshall Commons Technology Park, where more data centers are proposed. If all are approved, the projects would add another “data center alley” between Gainesville and Haymarket. A data explosion, partly driven by artificial intelligence, is driving demand for data centers. Experts estimate the emergence of artificial intelligence will triple the need for data storage in the next decade. Anticipating that need, data center developers are looking for more land in suburbs and rural areas and building bigger on their existing properties. “You’re seeing this quicker pace and broader geography, but you’re also seeing very large buildings,” Josh Levi, president of the Data Center Coalition, told The Business Journals earlier this month. Meanwhile, properties that were once considered viable for retail or other commercial buildings have been turned into data centers. The Parsons Business Park, a former landscaping outlet in the mid-county area, is an example. When first proposed in 2019, its plans called for a row of
commercial buildings along Dumfries Road with four possible data centers in the rear. By the time the project reached the Prince William Board of County Supervisors last March, the developer was seeking permission for 85-foot-tall buildings, which would allow for three-story data centers. A month later, the property sold for $218 million to Amazon Web Services. NTT’s Grove at Gainesville followed a similar path. For years, the 102-acre site had been contemplated as a shopping mall. In 2021, its owner, Lerner Enterprises, sought a rezoning and changes to its development restrictions. The company said if it built traffic-heavy restaurants, banks and stores, it would limit development to 1.1 million square feet. If used for data centers, Lerner asked for up to 2.9 million square feet. The landowner also asked to boost the floor area ratio so the building floor space could equal 65% of the lot’s square footage. In December 2021, the supervisors approved the project. The county had yet to experience its battles over rampant data center growth, and the application was not heavily scrutinized. For instance, concern over data center noise did not begin until the spring of 2022, when residents of Great Oak subdivision south of Manassas began to complain of the screeches and hums from the Amazon data centers next door. As a result, all data center proposals now contain promises to stay within county’s noise limits, but the Grove at Gainesville proposal did not mention noise or sound. In June 2022, Lerner Enterprises sold the property to NTT for $257 million, about $2.5 million an acre. In October 2023, NTT released plans for the property to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which regulates a small creek and wetland that runs through the property. The plans show three buildings of similar size, each with 550,000 square feet, and a fourth one slightly smaller. Weir has lobbied his fellow supervisors to limit the size and number of data centers in the county, which already has more than 50 operating data centers and is on track to become the data center capital of the world. One striking feature of Grove at Gainesville is how much of the land is taken up with buildings, electrical substations and pads for emergency diesel-powered generators, which will number more than 50 for each of the four buildings. “You increase the (floor area ratio), you increase the amount of power required because you’re increasing the square footage,” Weir said. “It’s that simple.” Reach Peter Cary at news@fauquier.com

What’s hot at Prince William Public Libraries: July By Kirk Johnson
Contributing Writer
We’re in the thick of summer right now, which means vacations, summer reading, traveling and sometimes just trying to get out of the heat and lose yourself in a good book. Here’s a sampling of new titles coming to your local Prince William Public Libraries branch. Flynn Berry has made a name for herself, delivering novels that provide high-level suspense and emotional depth beyond what readers normally expect from mysteries and thrillers. Her latest, “Trust Her,” follows two Northern Irish women who fled to Dublin after having escaped retribution from the IRA for having served as informants. The past
comes back to haunt them, and soon, one of the two sisters finds herself being drawn back into the struggle. Lisa Jackson fans know they can rely on her to provide plenty of romance, and — in many of her novels — that romance is mixed with entertaining suspense. “Our Little Secret” is no exception. In this gender-reversal take on the classic film, “Fatal Attraction,” the main character tries to end a brief affair to save her marriage and family. But her spurned lover has other ideas and is willing to go to dangerous lengths to get his way. Kristy Woodson Harvey fans know her novels serve up a comforting dose of cozy Southern charm. Her latest, “A Happier Life,” ®
promises to deliver the goods yet again. A summer beach novel about a summer at the beach, it’s also a story about a young woman who comes South in search of her family history and finds a new family in the community her deceased grandparents once knew. Julia Phillips’s second novel, “Bear,” offers the same evocative setting, tension and suggestive circumstances as her debut. The titular bear is a real animal seen by the main character and a symbol of the mystery at the heart of the tension between the two sisters. Phillips doesn’t write straightforward mysteries — she keeps the reader on their toes. Bestselling author Chris Whitaker is back with “All the Colors of the
Dark,” a novel set in the mid-70s that straddles different genres — there is a missing person, a serial killer on the loose and a love story all mixed in together and taken to heights genre fiction rarely strives for. These are just a few of the books waiting for you to find them at your local library. Visit Prince William Public Libraries’ online catalog at pwcva.gov/library to place a hold on any of the titles or discover your own. Some of the USA’s top Olympic medal contenders come from Virginia Track superstars Holloway and Lyles, swimmer Huske are prime picks for gold in Paris By Peter Brewington Sports Editor
Fifteen members of the USA’s team at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris come from Virginia. Of the group, several are strong contenders to medal. At the top of the list is sprint superstar Noah Lyles of Alexandria, who won the world 100- and 200-meter titles in Budapest last year and is one of the best sprinters in his generation. Lyles has owned the 200, winning world titles in 2019, 2022 and 2023. Right up there as a gold medal favorite is Chesapeake resident Grant Holloway, who is considered one of the greatest 110-meter hurdlers of all-time. He was upset in the 2020 Olympic final, taking second. Holloway owns five world indoor/outdoor titles. Another Virginian that could medal is Arlington swimming standout Torri Huske. The 21-year-old earned a silver medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and is back at the height of her powers to compete in the 100-meter butterfly and 100 freestyle. Other Virginians to watch are Ashburn’s Emily Fox, a member of the U.S. women’s soccer team, and McLean’s Claire Collins, who rows on the powerhouse U.S. women’s eights team which has a history of Olympic gold. One of the most exciting new faces in U.S. swimming is Charlottesville area phenom Thomas Heilman, 17. A rising senior at Western Albemarle High, he will race in the 100and 200-meter butterfly after turning heads at the U.S. Olympic trials. Equestrian rider Will Coleman of Gordonsville could be in the mix for a medal, as well as BMX biker Justin Dowell, who hails from Virginia Beach.

At-home tips for beating the summer heat By Denise Schefer
Long & Foster Warrenton
The thermometer in my car read 103 degrees last week! Summer is certainly hitting hard this year with scorching temperatures and very little rain to cool things off. During these far-from-ideal times, here are 10 small steps you can take to keep your monthly energy bills in check. Adjust the thermostat: Set your thermostat to at least 75 degrees or consider getting a smart thermostat. Air conditioning makes up about 19% of household energy use and the largest energy expense, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The higher you can set your thermostat as outside temperatures rise, the lower your bills will be. A smart thermostat can make small adjustments to indoor temperatures, whether you are home or away, and can adjust in the daytime and nighttime hours. Turn down your water heater: Turn your water heater down to “medium” versus “high” settings. Hot water accounts for about 12% of energy use, according to the energy information administration, and is typically a home’s second-largest energy expense. Dialing the water heater back just a couple of degrees will help your pocketbook. Taking shorter showers with cooler water than you would during the winter and insulating your water heater and pipes are beneficial as well. Use fans: A fan, especially a ceiling fan, will circulate air and create a windchill effect, making you feel more comfortable. Make sure it is set in the counterclockwise direction to push the air downward during summer months. Unplug electronics when not in use: Many appliances draw energy even when not turned on. Keep electronics such as TVs, microwaves CALENDAR, from page 7 Haymarket Farmers Market: 15000 Washington St., Haymarket. 9 to 1 p.m. Every Sunday to Nov. 10. Power strips can be used to make this task less tedious. Avoid stove and oven use: They can increase the temperature in a room by up to 10 degrees. Instead, make non-cook dishes and salads or use alternate smaller appliances that will not produce as much heat such as your microwave, toaster oven, air fryer, crockpot and instant pot. Outdoor grills and smokers are a great option, as well. You will keep your kitchen cooler and will not have to run your air conditioning as much. Close curtains and blinds: During the hottest parts of the day, from noon to 4 p.m., close your blinds to block the sun’s strong rays, helping to maintain lower temperatures throughout your house. Switch to LED bulbs: Incandescent bulbs turn most of the energy they use into heat, making rooms warmer, while LED bulbs operate at

a lower wattage and produce half as much heat. They also use much less energy, which saves on energy costs. Use the dishwasher, clothes washer and clothes dryer wisely: Wait until you have full loads before running them and use them during the early morning or evening hours when temperatures are lower. Use cold water and air dry versus heated dry when possible and consider line-drying your clothes. Clean the back of your dryer and dryer hose regularly to put less strain on the machine and allow it to run for shorter periods of time. Maintain your HVAC system and change filters regularly: This helps your HVAC system run more efficiently, resulting in lower operating costs. Clogged filters can tax your system, causing it to use more energy. Also, trim any trees and bushes near your unit(s) to maintain good airflow. Check for leaks: Inspect windows and doors for leaks. Apply caulk, foam sealers and weather stripping where needed to prevent warm air from entering your home. I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer, hopefully with some fun indoor or perhaps pool-side activities. Cooler fall temperatures will be here before we know it!
