Sticker shocked? Property tax bills rise despite targeted relief By Cher Muzyk

Many Prince William County residents are likely facing higher personal property tax bills this year than they paid on the same vehicles in 2021, despite the temporary tax relief the Prince William Board of County Supervisors approved earlier this year. Tax bills arriving in mailboxes over the past two weeks assess vehicles at only 80% of their value rather than the customary 100%. The county board took that step in April in an attempt to mitigate rising used car values driven by pandemic supply chain delays. Still, increasing used car values have driven tax bills higher. Superintendent: Hoping for a year without pandemic ‘distractions’ Prince William schools whittle teacher vacancies down to 168 By Aileen M. Streng Contributing Writer
The new school year began Monday morning in Prince William County with students piling out of school buses anxious to see friends and greeted by waiting teachers, anxious to start teaching them. Prince William County Public School Superintendent Dr. LaTayna McDade was at Gar-Field High School in Woodbridge Monday morning. “We are just excited to be returning back

to school, and I think what I am hopeful about is embracing a really positive school year, focused on teaching and learning,” she said. McDade said she hopes to be getting away “from some of the distractions” of the last couple of years due to the pandemic. “Having students return to some normal routine so we can really focus on the core business of education,” she added, “because there have been so many distractions in the past.” While the worst of the pandemic appears to be over, new variants continue to emerge, and the possibility remains that COVID-19 could again disrupt schools and learning.
Friends and family are rallying to support the Honore family in the wake of the tragic loss last week of former Potomac High boys’ basketball star Kyle Honore, who was struck and killed by a train two days after his parents dropped him off at the campus of Wingate (N.C.) University for the start of his freshman year.

‘It breaks everybody’s heart’ HONORE, from page 1 Honore, 19, was a 2022 Potomac High graduate who played for his father Keith Honore, a boys’ basketball coaching legend in Prince William County. Keith retired this year after coaching for 16 years, and guiding Kyle and two older sons. A dynamic 6-foot point guard, Kyle Honore ran his father’s offense to perfection during his four-year varsity career. He averaged nearly 20 points as a senior, was first team all-Class 6 and Cardinal District Player of the Year. He accepted a scholarship offer to play at NCAA Division II Wingate, located outside Charlotte, N.C. As a junior, he was a catalyst for a Panthers’ team that went 13-1 and advanced to the Class 6 championship game, losing to Centreville 63-49. He scored 15 in the final. “He was a great kid, and it breaks everybody’s heart,” said Sherman Rivers, a former assistant coach at Potomac who is now an assistant coach for his son, also named Sherman Rivers, Patriot High’s head boys basketball coach. Rivers said Kyle visited his home often over the years and was friends with Rivers’ grandson. “Even though we were rivals, we were great friends.” Rivers said Kyle was a good student and supportive of his teammates as well as a dynamic, driven player. “You just couldn’t stop him when he was ready to score,” Rivers said. Kyle Honore died on Tuesday, Aug. 16, after he was struck by an eastbound train at about 10:45 p.m. along train tracks close to the Wingate University campus. Wingate is a private, Division II college of about 3,400 students located about 30 miles southeast of Charlotte. Honore succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital, Wingate Police Chief Craig Bradshaw said in a news release. The train tracks run across North Camden Street, about a block from the university’s health center and a dining hall. Bradshaw said Friday that police have found no evidence of foul play, but the incident remains under investigation. A police officer declined to offer any other details about the incident, including whether Kyle Honore was with anyone when he was struck or whether there were any witnesses. A GoFundMe account for the Honore family had raised more than $29,000 toward its $60,000 goal by Saturday, Aug. 20. Organizer Cayla Smart, Kyle Honore’s cousin, said the effort would go toward a memorial service. “We all have hearts heavy with grief as we try to process. Kyle was so full of life and excited for what was to come; tragically, he was taken from us way too soon,” Smart wrote on the fundraising page. Potomac School Board Representative Justin Wilk said he has long known the Honore family

Wilk said he visited Potomac Senior High on Thursday morning and said school staff members were devastated and shocked to hear of Kyle’s death. “It’s just so sad. The Honore family is part of the blue blood and pride of Potomac. They meant so much to that school,” Wilk said. “Kyle was the heart and soul of that team. He was just a good guy all around.” On Thursday, Aug. 18, about 200 Wingate students gathered around the Old Well Spring Tower on the Wingate University campus to pray for Honore and his friends and family. The event, sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes,
was planned before the accident to pray for the new school year but quickly shifted focus to offer support and condolences, said the Rev. Shannon Powell, director of the Wingate University’s FCA. “We hurt deeply at the passing of one of our very own. Our entire Wingate community mourns the loss of Kyle Honore,” said Shaw Crocker, a Wingate senior and the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs’ football team, according to notes shared by Powell. “He was not just a student but an athlete and a competitor. Even more, he was a brother, and he was a son.” Efforts to reach Keith Honore were not immediately successful Friday. He and his wife Nichole dropped Kyle off at his Wingate dorm room last weekend. The elder Honore posted a photo from Kyle’s dorm room on Twitter on Monday, Aug. 15, writing: “Dropped my guy @therealkyle_11 off yesterday .... when your child leaves you, a part of you leaves with him. Super excited for the chapter of his life. #wingate #ProudDad.” Keith Honore racked up more than 300 wins and two state titles during his coaching career at Potomac. Kyle Honore, who scored over 1,000 career points, shared jersey No. 11 with both his dad and his older brother, Keijon. Potomac Senior High School has a jersey with the number 11 painted on the wall of the gym in their honor. No details have yet been shared about a memorial service. School board chair called out for tweet critical of closing schools during pandemic By Cher Muzyk and Jill Palermo Times Staff Writers
Local and state elected officials took to social media Saturday to call out Prince William County School Board Chair Dr. Babur Lateef for a now-deleted tweet criticizing “public health officials, politicians, constituencies and media” for closing schools during the pandemic. On Saturday, Aug. 20, around 9:30 a.m., Lateef posted this tweet to his @PWCSChairman Twitter account. “#Rollingbusses [sic] will be back this Monday. Back to School! NEVER FORGET what misinformed and misled public health officials, politicians, constituencies and media did to stop the busses [sic] and close schools. #neverforget #neverforgive #neveragain” The tweet came just two days before the school division’s about 90,000 students and 12,000 teachers and staff will return to classes with almost none of the COVID-19 protocols schools mandated over the past two years. The post was met with several angry responses questioning Lateef’s judgment and calling the tweet “divisive” and “antagonistic rhetoric.” Throughout the day, elected officials, Democratic organizations and even some parents shot back at Lateef, an ophthalmologist, before he deleted the tweet around 8 p.m. Lateef is a Democrat, and most if not all of the critical posts came from fellow Democrats.

We all got it right. He got it 100% wrong. Time to find an opponent for him.” For his part, Lateef said he deleted the tweet Saturday evening because it was “inaccurate” in that he did not mean to suggest that schools should not have closed in the early days of the pandemic in 2020. But Lateef also reiterated his opinion that schools waited too long to fully reopen. “I did delete it. Technically it was inaccurate to say we [were] wrong about school closure. More accurately, it should have read that initially in March 2020, it was appropriate to close. Not much was known,” Lateef said in a statement to the Prince William Times. “But after July 2020, schools should have fully reopened with mitigations like it was done in many states around the country and in private schools,” the statement continued. “My tweet was born of frustration with the devastating learning loss that continues to be seen in SOL scores and the impact on child mental health. Sticker shocked? County personal property tax bills rise despite targeted tax relief TAX, from page 1 In Virginia, personal property tax rates are set by local governing bodies during budget season every spring. Prince William County’s personal property tax rate of $3.70 per $100 in assessed value is the third lowest in Northern Virginia. Manassas Park’s rate is the lowest at $3, and neighboring Manassas City’s is the second lowest at $3.60. Fairfax County charges $4.54 and Fauquier County, $3.45. Prince William County issued a statement Aug. 9, explaining that used vehicle car values had appreciated as a result of the economic impact of COVID-19, supply chain shortages impacting the production of new vehicles and “unusual inflationary pressures.” The county explained that “vehicles have appreciated in value beyond what could be considered fair market value,” according to the press release. During county budget talks last spring, Elijah Johnson, acting Prince William County executive, called the anticipated rise in the value of used
cars and trucks “unprecedented.” Values for vehicle model years 2007 and later appreciated anywhere from 10% to 40% over the past year, according to the National Automobile Dealers Association book of values, Prince William County Finance Director Michelle Attreed noted at the time. “This spring, the Prince William Board of County Supervisors approved temporary personal property tax relief to help offset the high trade-in value of used vehicles. The discount is retroactive and is effective as of January 1, 2022, and expires at the end of the year,” Supervisor Kenny Boddye, D-Occoquan, said in an Aug. 18 Facebook post. The temporary reduction is on top of the state’s existing “car tax relief” protocol, which exempts 45% of the tax on vehicles valued up to $20,000. (For vehicles valued at more than $20,000, the exemption is applied to the first $20,000 in value). Even with the temporary relief, county Chief Finance Officer Michelle Attreed predicted last spring
that vehicle tax bills would likely rise but not as much as they would without it. “Assessing at 80% of [a vehicle’s] value will not completely negate a personal property tax increase in all cases but will mitigate the impact,” Attreed told the Prince William Times in an April email. In accordance with state law, Prince William County uses the “Clean Trade-in Value” established by J.D. Power (NADA) as fair market value of vehicles. The county provided this example on its website explaining how its “temporary property tax relief” is calculated: 2013 GMC Yukon Clean Tradein Value per J.D. Power (NADA) is $18,800, therefore, $18,800 x 80% = $15,040 is the assessed value on the personal property tax bill. Although there is no mention of the reduction on the property tax bills, the amount shown in the “assessed value” line on the bills represents 80% of the full assessment, Attreed said in a recent email. When asked why the county decided not to explain the reduced as-
sessment on tax bills, Attreed said it was a billing system decision. “Adding additional language to the bills creates an added level of complexity, programming and testing. We try to avoid creating deviations from the out-of-the-box bills created by our billing system,” she wrote. Some residents were surprised by tax bills exceeding the amounts they paid on the same vehicles last year and took to social media to express their frustrations. Vicki Bellinger, of Woodbridge, said she drives a 2018 Hyundai Sonata, and her personal property tax bill is $455 this year, an increase of $40 over last year’s bill. “I used to get excited that it would lower each year as my car aged, but this is the second year in a row that it has increased!” KerriAnne Corbett Cooper, of Bristow, commented. Personal property tax bills are due to county taxpayer services on or before Oct. 5. Reach Cher Muzyk at cmuzyk@ fauquier.com

Superintendent: Hoping for a year without pandemic ‘distractions’ SCHOOLS, from page 1 “Of course, we are going to follow the health professionals, but we are getting out of the health care business,” McDade said. “We are going to focus on being educators. That’s what we know how to do. “It’s been tough trying to focus on the core business while at the same time trying to mitigate all these different things,” she said. “I think we’ve done a good job, as best that we can, but I also recognize that we are in a place where we’ve learned a lot about living with COVID, and we’ve come a long way.” McDade said since the pandemic, a lot has changed in education. “While it’s been a tumultuous couple of years and very challenging, we’ve learned some things and had some innovations that came out of all of this,” she said. One big change is that each Prince William County student will be given a laptop computer that they can use for learning, she said. Before the pandemic, that move was part of a five-year plan. “We’ve invested in our four-year strategic plan to have a digital equity initiative to ensure that every single school has modern technology, oneto-one devices [laptops] for students as well as technological tools for teachers,” McDade said.
“These are big steps that we wouldn’t have been able to do without the infusion of stimulus dollars to make this shift,” she said. “Some positive things did come out of [the pandemic] in terms of how we became more innovative in the classroom.” McDade said teachers “flipped on a dime from in-person learning to something new that they had never experienced before, but they did it. It was a herculean effort.” Yet, like school districts across the country, Prince William Schools are wrestling with teacher vacancies. The school division hired about 1,000 new teachers to begin the new year. “We’ve done a really good job with creative solutions around that,” McDade said. About two weeks ago, McDade announced that the school division had hired about 900 teachers but still had more than 300 vacancies. As of last week, the number was down to 242 openings. Since then, 74 “teaching professionals on temporary assignment” have been hired. They are individuals with bachelor’s degrees and one year of successful experience with students who are working toward provisional teaching licenses. Those additions brought the current number of vacancies as of the first day of school to 168.
Students at Gar-Field High School appeared happy to be back, but the pandemic was still on their minds. While several wore masks, the vast majority did not. “This is my last first day. I’m a senior,” said Ashley Boateny. “I’m going to enjoy my senior year. I didn’t get to enjoy my freshman year because of COVID. I hope this year will be back to normal.” “I’m excited for the new year, but I’m also a little nervous because I don’t know what’s to come,” said junior Jordana Wakely. “I’m excited but also sad because it’s the beginning of the end,” said Kayla Wakely, a senior and Jordana’s sister. “I’m going to live in the now and make as many memories as possible before heading to college.” “This is my junior year, and we are going to be able to do more stuff and spend more time with friends. No more masks or social distancing,” said Marilin Mejia. The superintendent said she is only looking forward and embracing positive energy. “No one drives a car only looking in the rearview mirror,” she said. “You’ve got to be moving forward. There are endless possibilities for our scholars, and that is what I’m going to latch on to.” Reach Aileen Streng at aileenstreng@gmail.com

LATEEF, from page 3 only able to open in person for special education students. The [Virginia Department of Education] outlined a strategy to open that we did not follow until late October.” Lateef’s statement, which he requested be printed in full, went on to add: “Governor Northam was clear that you could open with appropriate mitigations in September. I was unable to get that done. I will never forget that. I won’t let it happen again. Public health officials and politicians got it right in many states that were able to open safely. “I am proud that we did open earlier than others, open safely, and have had incredible success since we
have opened. That includes the last academic school year. That is due to the great work of our teachers and administrators and families.” Like all schools across the state, Prince William County schools fully closed in March 2020, when the global pandemic was declared because of the novel coronavirus. In July 2020, the Northam administration said schools could reopen for in-person instruction, but only if they could maintain strict protocols aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19. Some of those restrictions, released in guidance to school administrators in July 2020, called the pandemic a “persistent public health threat” and called for separating students in classrooms by 6 feet, if
possible, but no less than 3 feet, with mandated masking. Those restrictions, which were not possible in many of Prince William County’s crowded schools, as well as a stubbornly high percent-positivity level in the county, kept then-Superintendent Steven Walts from fully reopening schools until early 2021. The school board opened schools to about 1,000 special education students in September 2020. The remaining students began returning on hybrid schedules – with students attending school only on certain days of the week – beginning with kindergarteners in November 2020. Even then, however, many students elected to finish the school year online instead of attending

in person. Prince William County schools reopened to all students for five days a week for the 2021-22 school year, although masking was mandated until February. Thousands of students and teachers tested positive for COVID-19 or had to quarantine after being exposed to the virus during the last two years. The school division lost a handful of employees to COVID-19 as well as one student, a middle-schooler from Lake Ridge. As of this week, 871 residents of Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park have died due to COVID-19 since the pandemic began. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Who is driving the ship on the Digital Gateway? Why is Prince William County thinking of turning 2,100 acres of beautiful rural land into an incompatible “cement city” full of buildings that may become obsolete in five to 10 years? Instead of a wasteland, let’s turn it into something worthwhile! We have 200,000 folks represented by the HOA Roundtable, a coalition of homeowners associations from across the county, who don’t want the PW Digital Gateway. Meanwhile, about 102 property owners along Pageland Lane want the Digital Gateway because data center developers have promised them roughly 25 times the current market value for their homes! Can you imagine the owners of a small home that sits on a 10 acres being offered $10 million?! Why do the county schools always ask for more money? Prince William County schools received the single largest amount of funding from the Virginia Lottery of any school division in the state last year, and they have millions in unspent COVID 19 relief money! Where is
all this money going? To get more local tax revenue, Prince William County could place the data centers in the existing industrial zones where there would be no additional infrastructure costs. They could also increase the taxes on data centers already operating in the county. Why are trees being knocked down despite endorsed climate action goals, which the board of county supervisors endorsed? The temperatures in Gainesville are already rising compared to Catharpin! What will happen when the 40 data centers are finished in Gainesville? Who’s steering the ship? The same speeches are given in support of the Digital Gateway, week after week. Are these the words of developers and corporations delivered by property owners who stand to personally benefit if the supervisors approve it? Politicians might want to listen and steer the ship according to their constituents’ needs. ELAINE ROMANIAS Gainesville
Yes, data centers and all development contribute to region’s water salinity woes The Aug. 8 Washington Post article, “Salt in water sources becoming worrisome in D.C. region, experts warn,” highlights the increasing salinity levels in the Occoquan Reservoir. This salinity (salt) issue has elicited responses from Pageland Lane property owners and developers who are trying to blame others and deflect attention. I prefer to look at the facts and listen to the experts. The facts show salinity levels in the Occoquan Reservoir have been increasing since 1980. Another fact is that the Fairfax County Water Authority cannot remove salt from the drinking water without an expensive investment (costing about $1 billion). How many residents and how many supervisors have looked into this issue? Supervisor Jeanine Lawson and I went out on the reservoir this past week. We witnessed sampling and testing. Afterward, we visited Virginia Tech’s Occoquan Watershed Monitoring Lab in Manassas. We are learning. “Willful
ignorance” will not be our defense. There is still a lot to learn. Specifically, how badly will development increase salinity levels in the Occoquan Reservoir? The salinity problem is partly due to development and stormwater issues. Adding data centers to rural land will increase development and impervious surfaces, which will further boost salinity levels in the reservoir. We need a stormwater study to know the real impact. We need to cease development until we know the real impacts. Listen to the experts such as the Fairfax County Water Authority and Prince William County’s own watershed management officials and do the study first. Do not listen to Pageland Lane area property owners such as Mike Grossman who will make $9 to $10 million selling his property to data centers. Biased? Yes. ROGER YACKEL Gainesville
Prince William Digital Gateway will bring jobs, revenue to the county So many people live in Prince William County and work somewhere else. Wouldn’t it be nice if there were more jobs inside Prince William County for people to choose from? The proposed Prince William Digital Gateway is an avenue to provide high-quality, high-tech jobs in Prince William County as well as more tax revenue for the county. Many people like me, who work
in the tech industry and travel outside the county to work every day, end up spending money in the areas where we work — things like lunch, gas, shopping, etc. Let’s do something to bring that money back to Prince William. One of those somethings is the Prince William Digital Gateway. JAMES GRANT Gainesville
County is not ready for ‘data center development prime time’ Prince William County is not ready for “data center development prime time,” including the proposal to replan 2,100 acres near the Manassas National Battlefield Park for new data centers. More work must be done by Prince William County staff before decisions are made for ANY data center proposals. Who among the Prince William County staff has completed a cost-benefit analysis on the Prince William Digital Gateway and where is it? The developers have done this and chosen our county in part because we have not, and may not, do this before making decisions. Our noise ordinance does not address 24-7 data center noise. The data center noise near schools and homes is hard to fix: ask the residents of the Great Oak neighborhood about the noise from the Amazon data centers near their neighborhood. The Fairfax County Water Authority manager wrote our county leaders this spring, urging a holistic
water study to understand the impacts of data centers on the Occoquan watershed. The Occoquan Reservoir provides drinking water for 800,000 people, many of whom live in eastern Prince William County. Five Prince William County supervisors voted Aug 2 to do a water study – but the results won’t be known before they decide on the PW Digital Gateway. How do you like that Prince William County residents? Current data center designs could soon be obsolete. How will dozens of HUGE, uniquely designed concrete structures be re-purposed? Where is the county policy? Who will bear high demolition costs? Prince William supervisors must hit the pause button. Please contact your supervisor ASAP about these issues before their decision on the PW Digital Gateway this fall. PWC is not ready for “data center development prime time.” STEPHANIE CHARTRAND Gainesville
Powering data centers is ugly and expensive An article in the Aug. 2 of this publication stated: “Additional high-voltage transmission lines will be needed to meet the needs of new data centers proposed as part of the PW Digital Gateway.” A Dominion Energy spokesperson said: “In terms of Digital Gateway, we do expect new substations and transmission lines would be needed, but it’s too early to know the size, location or timing.” We will absolutely need new transmission lines and substations for the data center developments at Va. 55 and Catharpin Road. These three projects are in close proximity to schools, and dense residential communities and the upheaval necessary to plug them in will cause intense public blowback. People will want to know whose bright idea it was to degrade their quality of life while billing them to subsidize
multi-billion-dollar corporations. How does your Prince William County government view such challenges to the viability of its runaway data center development plans? About like an ostrich would. Not only is there no intent to address these concerns, there is not even any indication that intelligent questions are being considered. I guess we can all just figure it out later when your view scape looks like a science-fiction movie, and your electric bill looks like your car payment. Knowing what you’re getting yourself into can make the difference between a windfall and a pratfall. It doesn’t seem like some of your supervisors want to know. Tell them that YOU want to know before we all wind up suffering for their indifference. BILL WRIGHT Gainesville

Led by new coach Reggie Scott, Colgan will look for offense out of junior running back Tyler Henry (above).
-District: Cardinal -Coach: Reggie Scott (1st year) -Last season: 0-10 -Expected contributors: QB Ryan Westhoff, RB Thomas Pullen, RB/WR Tyler Henry, WR Devon Grant, LT Evan Smith -Web: ColganSharkAthletics.org -Twitter: @ColganFootball -First game: Aug. 26 at Osbourn Park -Scouting report: Colgan football has yet to find its footing as the seven-year-old program seeks its first winning season. In fact, the Sharks haven’t won a game since Nov. 1, 2019, when they knocked off Osbourn Park 41-10 in the penultimate game of the season. First-year coach Reggie Smith, who guided Osbourn Park for the 2021 season before moving over to Colgan, is looking to lay a foundation for future classes. “We are looking to build a culture that embodies young men of character, team commitment, and increased competition,” he said. “We want to win as many games as possible, but success at this level cannot be measured by wins and losses.” Colgan returns six offensive and five defensive starters, plus a couple potentially key transfers. Quarterback Ryan Westhoff, a Cedar Run District honorable mention pick, and running back Thomas Pullen, a second team all-region selection, played for Scott last year at OP. They’re at Colgan now, as is senior wideout Darryl Byrd, a Bishop Ireton transfer. “We’re a spread offense designed to get the ball in our best playmakers’ hands early,” Scott said. Westhoff, who has an offer from Christopher Newport University, can choose to get it to returning starting receiver Tyler Henry or senior wide receiver Devon Grant, who’s getting collegiate interest. Senior two-way tackle Evan Smith, at 6-foot-4 and 275 pounds, is getting college looks, as is senior inside linebacker Andrew Byrd. “We have more athletes on the field and guys that can create turnovers for our defense.” Colgan’s defense will be led by returning junior inside linebacker Ethan Norah and second-team alldistrict safety Justin Watkins.
BRENTSVILLE
-District: Northwestern (Class 3) -Coach: Loren White (2nd year) -Last season: 11-3, made Class 3 semifinals -Expected contributors: QB Caleb Alexander, RB Nico Orlando, OL Tyler Nix, WR Ryan Beckman, DB Will Johnson, LB Langston White -Web: Facebook.com/BDHSactivities -Twitter: @BDTigerFootball -First game: Aug. 26 vs. Liberty -Scouting report: The Tigers might be a rising power in Class 3 football. After winning eight games in 2019 and going 4-2 in 2020, Brentsville racked up 11 wins last year and made it to the state semifinals before bowing out to Phoebus 43-0. “The expectation is the same,” said second-year coach Loren White. “We expect to be playing in December. The schedule is always laid out for all to know that football doesn’t end until mid-December.” The Tigers boast six returning starters on offense and three on defense, with athleticism on both sides. Offensively, junior quarterback Caleb Alexander will run a high-tempo spread built off of run-pass option principles, White said. With senior wideout Ryan Beckman and junior running back Nico Orlando behind 285-pound senior guard Tyler Nix, Brentsville’s offense is “potentially more explosive than last year’s,” White said. Senior defensive back Will Johnson and junior linebacker Langston White help make Brentsville’s defense more versatile. “They are two players who can make sure all are in the right spot to succeed.”

truncated 2020 campaign. Last year Freedom made it to the Region 6B title tilt, falling 24-7 to Battlefield. Overton has seven returning starters on both offense and defense, led by the mashers up front. “The guys on the offensive line will be most important to our offense’s success,” the coach said. He said that linemen Adrian Crespin, Armand Tubbs, Jonah Fuga, Mark Erinna, JuJu Stanley, and Walter Hughes are key to Freedom’s spread run/pass option attack. On defense, Freedom returns its entire secondary, led by all-state performers Kendall Bannister and Kam Courtney. Overton is also counting on returning starters Erinna and senior defensive tackle Nasir Ethington, along with TJ Bush, a Coastal Carolina University commit who transferred from Bishop Ireton.

The Red Wolves knocked off powerhouses Patriot and Freedom before losing their final three games, including a 10-0 loss to Osbourn to open the playoffs. In the long-term, it’s still progress for the program. “We started the program rebuild in 2017, and have had three consecutive winning seasons,” Keiling noted, adding that eight players from last year’s squad moved on to

junior Max Gardner. Gar-Field runs a sophisticated defense with multiple fronts, mixing zone with man coverages. Senior cornerback Victor Ssegawa is a speed merchant, moonlighting as the Wolves’ kick returner when not on defense. Malachi Wood-Valentine is another speedy defensive back. Middle linebacker Marvin Pereira and defensive tackle Rodrigo Rivas return for their senior years, aided by junior outside linebacker Alex Keene-Forbes and junior defensive end Abdul Whyte. “We have a group of linebackers and defensive backs that can run,” Keiling said. The coach noted that an influx of 45 freshmen and sophomores have restocked the program. “Our goal is to play as a team, develop young men into leaders on and off the game field, and to win the games that we have prepared for,” Keiling said. “We have the talent to defeat any team to the best of our ability.” “We are a multiple offense, the key to running the offense is the offensive line,” he said. Running back Korvin Parson and wingback Sean Leach figure to get the bulk of the carries for Hylton, while 6-foot-4 wideout Calvin Speed will be a top target. The defense shows a variety of fronts, “both odd and even,” Murphy said. Leach at defensive end, Arrington at defensive tackle, and Parson at linebacker return as starters, while sophomore linebackers Logan Marshall and Mason Cheatham have worked into the rotation. Safety Davonn Simpson and cornerback Jamil Francois provide senior stability to the secondary, flanked by junior Najim Bowman.
GAINESVILLE
-District: Cedar Run -Coach: Daniel Bruton (2nd year) -Last season: JV only -Expected contributors: TBD -Web: GainesvilleCardinals.com -Twitter: @GainesvilleFoo1 -First game: Aug. 27 at Handley -Scouting report: It’s the second year for Gainesville Cardinals football and the first year varsity season. Founding head coach Daniel Bruton is excited to keep developing. “We are not building a team, we are building a program,” he said. “Success will be defined for these players in years to come. In the present we want to see growth and progress.” On offense, “all players are key and have flexibility to adapt and change with the defense,” the coach said. Exactly who will carry the load for the Cardinals remains to be seen, but chances are it’ll be a young guy. “We will most likely have three sophomores and two juniors starting on the offensive line,” Bruton said. “We will have a sophomore quarterback, tight end, running back, maybe in the slot as well.” Defensively, it’s the basics, with an emphasis on stopping the run and avoiding big plays through the air.

Joann Laurents Newman, known to most people as “Jody,” passed away Friday, August 12th, 2022 at her home in Warrenton, Virginia. She leaves her daughter Joy Arteaga, two grandchildren, Matias Andres and Viviana Hope, her son-in-law Andres, who she thought of as a son, her “daughter” Lili, her brother Robert Laurents (Joan), her former husband Robert Newman, as well as her life partner of many years, Gene Harwell. Jody was born in Columbus, Ohio, on February 19, 1947. Because her father was in the Air Force, she traveled the world, finally settling in Virginia at the age of 10. She attended American University, graduating Magna cum Laude, while working part-time at various jobs in counseling and retail. The job she loved most was that of a crisis intervention counselor for youths aged 11-17. After college, Jody went to work for the federal government and rose through the ranks as a criminal investigator, Special Agent in Charge, Regional Inspector General, and ultimately a Deputy Inspector General for Investigations. She worked for various Federal Departments, including The Department of Commerce, The State Department, and the Small Business Administration. She was known for her lectures on Ethics in Government that she gave on a regular basis. Jody left her lucrative government career to care for her daughter Joy who had lyme disease. Joy says that the best day of her early life was when her mom retired, and Jody relished this time that she spent with her daughter. When Joy was a junior in high school another girl came into their lives - an exchange student from Brazil named Lili who became a part of their family, calling Jody “Mom.” Jody loved kids, so she always welcomed Joy’s friends as well as several other exchange students into her home. Jody had an inquiring mind that led her to immerse herself in every new interest, reading and researching in depth. She was an avid reader. She had an adventurous spirit and loved the outdoors and spending time in nature with friends and family. She and Joy loved cooking together and creating new recipes for family and friends. Jody and Gene enjoyed traveling and explored many interesting places together over the years. More recently, her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. Jody is preceded in death by her parents, Joann and Robert Laurents of Fairfax County, Virginia. Besides her family, Jody had many close friends who will miss her dearly. At Jody’s request there will be no funeral. The family asks that you do not send flowers, but give donations in Jody’s name to The Believe Big Institute of Health, a non-profit organization located at 11350 McCormick Road, Executive Plaza 1, Suite 100, Hunt Valley, Maryland. Believe Big is bridging the gap between conventional and alternative medicine in cancer care, funding clinical trials and providing support to those with cancer.

Anthony is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Pullen, and their son, Nathan Pullen. He is predeceased by his parents, Charles Lester Pullen and Deleros Bruce Pullen. Anthony was born in Alexandria, Virginia and enlisted in the Air Force at 19, after attending Marshall High School. He was honorably discharged. After his discharge, Anthony worked primarily in the funeral business, receiving a degree in mortuary science from Lynn University. He also worked as a car salesman. On April 28 1990 he married Elizabeth. On November 13, 1999 he welcomed Nathan into the world and his life. Anthony was an avid sports fan, loving the New England Patriots and the Washington Capitals. In high school, he played varsity football and basketball and was an avid golfer, bowler, and drummer. An animal lover, he worked briefly for a veterinarian and for an extended period taking care of horses on a farm in Middleburg, VA. In his later years, he loved spending his time at the American Legion Post 72 in Warrenton, where he always looked forward to their weekly seafood night. Anthony was a man of sympathy and of family, always looking to help whoever he could. His daily phone calls with his cousins and extended family never ceased. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all of the lives he touched throughout his time on this earth. A private funeral service will be held at Culpeper National Cemetery, where he will receive military honors. Flowers may be sent to Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton, and donations in his honor may be made to the Washington Regional Transplant Consortium. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www. moserfuneralhome.com. Remember your loved ones 540-347-4222 540.270.4931

William “Kelly” Glascock William “Kelly” Glascock, 69, of Fauquier, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family in Williamsburg, Virginia on July 22, 2022 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Kelly was born in Marshall, Virginia on February 2, 1953 to Mary Emma McGuinn and the late Grover Cleveland Glascock, Sr. Eager to serve his country, Kelly joined the United States Army at the age of 17. During his time in the Army he graciously served and was a proud Vietnam War veteran. After his time in the Army came to a close, Kelly joined Phoenix Construction Company, later William A. Hazel, Inc., where he made a career as a Construction Foreman. Kelly was an outdoorsman through and through. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, canoeing, and going for walks. He could often be found with a walking stick and whatever critter he had captured that day in tow. When he wasn’t outside, Kelly could be found relaxing in front of a Western movie with a cold glass of sweet tea or cheering on his beloved Redskins. The only thing Kelly loved more than the outdoors and mayonnaise was his family and a good dog to share it with. His heart was as big as his laugh and known to light up a room. He would have done absolutely anything for those in need; family, friend, or stranger. Kelly is survived by three children, Christopher Glascock (Stacey Tuttle), Candice Pittman (Andrew), Matthew Glascock (Marian FungKhawain), the mother of his children, Shirley Glascock, and five grandchildren, Brennan Pittman, Dylan Glascock, Mackenzie Pittman, Avery Pittman, and Penelope Glascock. He is also survived by his mother, Mary Emma Glascock Rothgeb and four siblings, Larry Glascock (Linda), Earnie Glascock (Shelia), Missy Gager, and Kathy Jones (Steve), numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. Kelly was preceded in death by his father, Grover Cleveland Glascock, Sr. and two brothers, Grover Cleveland Glascock, Jr. “Bubby” and Gordon “Lee” Glascock. The family will host a celebration of life on August 27, 2022 at 11:00AM in Elkwood, Virginia. Please contact Kelly’s daughter, Candice, for more details regarding his celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Kelly’s name.
Joseph Edward Hackman Our beloved father, brother, uncle, and friend, Joseph Edward Hackman, passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2022 at Bravera Hospital in Spring Hill, Florida. He was surrounded by his children and drifted away listening to The Grateful Dead with a smile on his face. The life of the party, Joe made a friend with everyone he met, danced with abandon, and had a contagious laugh. Joe was full of passion that he wasn’t afraid to share; he got kicked out of his kids’ sporting games for yelling at the refs, sobbed like a baby at weddings and movies, and put his all into everything he did. He cared about people, quickly climbing the ranks of the Weeki Wachee Eagles by befriending everyone. A lover of nature, he cared for all animals (except house wrens) knew the Latin names of every plant and tree, and was responsible for hundreds of beautiful landscapes in Fauquier & Prince William Counties. Joe always spoke his mind, even when inappropriate, but had a way of making you laugh even when you weren’t in the mood! He had amazing stories to tell, which he did in too much detail, including the time he rescued a girl from the ocean, traded shirts with a stranger, threw a no-hitter, sold jewelry with a Rasta on a Tobago beach and all about his modeling career. Very competitive, he faithfully backed his Green Bay Packers and loved fishing, bocce, golf, backgammon and card games. A man of many talents, Joe was a sketch artist, whittled wood, and was the best popcorn chef. He raised his kids, along with some nephews and nieces, and was fiercely proud of them all. His perfect evening would be sitting in a rocking chair around a fire, surrounded by family, listening to music while lifting his crazy eyebrow to make you laugh. Joe is survived by his three children, Jake, Jed, and Jessica; their mom, Jackie; his seven brothers and sisters; brothers and sisters-in- law, and dozens of nieces & nephews. A celebration of life will be held by the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to JDRF. Online condolences can be shared at www.brewerfuneral.com

The Collateral includes without limitation the following: (i) all of Debtor’s claims against all defendants (including without limitation all claims that could have been alleged and claims that have been dismissed by the Court) in Debtor’s action currently pending in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Vivos Acquisitions, LLC v. Healthcare Resource Network, LLC et al, Case Number 1:19-cv-01606-RDA-TCB (the “Litigation”); (ii) all of Debtor’s rights in and to the membership interests, economic interests and equity interests of Healthcare Resource Network, LLC; (iii) all of Debtor’s rights in and to certain monies currently held in escrow by counsel for the defendants in the Litigation; (iv) all of Debtor’s rights in and to any certificates representing the membership interests in Healthcare Resource Network, LLC; (v) all of Debtor’s rights and interests under any agreements made with Healthcare Resource Network, LLC, Laura Bankeroff and Joann Koutsioukis; and (vi) all of Debtor’s claims against Healthcare Resource Network, LLC, Laura Bankeroff and Joann Koutsioukis, both known and unknown, arising at any time from the beginning of the world through and including the date of the disposition of the Collateral. All of the Collateral, including without limitation the Collateral specifically identified herein, shall be subject to the sale at public auction. The Collateral is being sold following Debtor’s failure to pay that certain Judgment entered against Debtor in favor of Secured Party by the Circuit Court for Prince William County, Virginia in the amount of $264,840.58, plus post-judgment interest at the statutory rate, Case Number CL22002744-00. The public sale of the Collateral shall be held at the entrance to the Circuit Court for Prince William County, Virginia building, 9311 Lee Avenue, Manassas, Virginia 20110, on AUGUST 29, 2022, AT 10:00 AM. TERMS OF SALE: This advertisement, as amended or supplemented by any oral announcements made at or on behalf of Secured Party during the conduct of the sale, constitutes Secured Party’s entire statement relative to the Collateral described herein and the terms and conditions upon which such Collateral shall be offered for sale. Secured Party reserves the unqualified right to withdraw the Collateral at any time prior to the conclusion of the public auction. If Secured Party or its agent determines that any opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the Collateral, Secured Party or its agent may withdraw the Collateral from sale. The highest bidder acknowledged by Secured Party or its agent shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute among the bidders, Secured Party or its agent shall have the sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to then and there reoffer and resell the Collateral. Any loss or damage to the Collateral from and after the date of sale will be at the risk of the successful bidder. At the time of the sale, Secured Party will require the successful bidder (hereinafter called the “Purchaser”) to put a deposit of not less than Ten Thousand and No/100 Dollars ($10,000.00) (hereinafter called the “Deposit”), made payable to the order of Secured Party unless the lienholder is the successful bidder. The Deposit shall be in cash, certified check or some other form of exchange acceptable to Secured Party, in Secured Party’s sole and absolute discretion. The balance of the purchase price, together with interest at the rate of eight percent (8%) per annum from the date of sale to the date of settlement, shall be paid to Secured Party at settlement in cash or equivalent immediately available funds. Settlement shall occur within three (3) days of the date of sale, unless extended thereafter in the sole discretion of Secured Party. Payment of the balance will be in cash, or, at the sole discretion of Secured Party, by certified check or other equivalent immediately available funds. Time is of the essence. If the Purchaser fails to consummate the purchase in accordance with the terms of sale as provided herein, in addition to any other remedies available to Secured Party at law or in equity, the Deposit may be forfeited, at the option of Secured Party, and Secured Party may resell the Collateral, at the risk and cost of the Purchaser. The forfeited Deposit will be applied to the cost and expenses of both sales. The defaulting Purchaser shall be liable for payment of all costs and expenses of both sales, plus any deficiency. All costs incident to settlement of whatsoever kind and amount, shall be paid by the Purchaser. The Collateral is sold: (i) subject to any and all liens, encumbrances, easements, covenants, agreements, conditions and limitations of record and not of record; (ii) in “as is” condition; (iii) without warranty as to the accuracy of the information furnished to and/or by Secured Party and made available to prospective bidders. Secured Party will not deliver possession of the Collateral. Obtaining possession of the Collateral shall be at the sole cost, risk and expense of the Purchaser. There is no warranty relating to title, possession, quiet enjoyment, or the like in this disposition. Further, Secured Party makes no representations or warranties that any of the claims and choses in action described hereinabove as part of the Collateral are valid, or that the Litigation will not be dismissed with prejudice by the Court, or that the Purchaser will be able to locate any additional Collateral.
