The Prince William Digital Gateway – a controversial plan to open 2,100 acres adjacent to the Manassas National Battlefield Park and within the county’s protected “rural crescent” to data centers -- took a major step forward Wednesday when the board of supervisors approved a comprehensive plan amendment designed to make it a reality. After a contentious 14-hour meeting and public hearing that began at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, and stretched until almost 10 a.m., the board voted 5-2 to approve the plan in a party-line vote. The motion was made by Supervisor Victor Angry, D-Neabsco, and seconded by Supervisor Andrea Bailey, D-Potomac. Angry and Bailey voted in favor along with Board Chair Ann Wheeler (At Large), Supervisor Kenny Boddye (Occoquan) and Margaret Franklin (Woodbridge). Republican Supervisors Jeanine Lawson (Brentsville) and Yesli Vega (Coles) voted against the plan. See SUPERVISORS, page 2
Citing concerns about the health of the Occoquan Reservoir, which provides drinking water to 800,000 Northern Virginians, Fairfax County officials are again urging the Prince William Board of County Supervisors to study the impacts of the “Prince William Digital Gateway” – or any significant new commercial development in the rural area – before moving forward. The Fairfax County board took the unusual step of sending a letter to its Prince William counterparts Tuesday, Oct. 25 -- just one week before the Prince William board was set to vote on a comprehensive plan amendment that would move the PW Digital Gateway forward. The amendment would replan 2,133 acres along Pageland Lane adjacent to the Manassas National Battlefield Park and in the protected “rural crescent” to allow up to 27.6 million square feet of new data center development. The letter, which the Fairfax board approved unanimously, urges that the Prince William supervisors not rezone any land in the Pageland Lane corridor – or extend public sewer in the rural crescent – until Prince William follows through with a study on the impacts on the Occoquan Reservoir. The Prince William supervisors voted in August to ask the Northern Virginia Regional Commission to use its computer model to do the study, but did not agree to wait for the results before voting on the Gateway amendment or voting on an update to the county’s comprehensive plan known as the “Pathway to 2040.”

Supervisors OK plan for rural data centers SUPERVISORS, from page 1 The move came after about 300 speakers gave nearly 10 hours of public comments both for and against the plan, first proposed nearly two years ago. According to their arguments, the plan is either a once-in-a-lifetime economic boon for an area residents say is no longer rural because of heavy traffic and existing power lines -- or it will create “a massive concrete jungle,” as one opponent put it, that will degrade the battlefield and pose threats to the environment and the Occoquan Reservoir, which provides drinking water to 800,000 Northern Virginia residents, including 350,000 in Prince William County. Dozens spoke in favor of the project and included several of the 100 property owners who are under contract to sell their land to data center developers if the rezonings tied to the project are approved. Many other supporters identified themselves as union electricians who said the data centers would provide decades of work for local laborers. Some speakers characterized the fight as the “Third Battle of Manassas,” a comparison to the Civil War battles that made Manassas famous as well as land battles in the 1980s and 1990s over a shopping mall and a Disney theme park that were once proposed – but never approved – on land near the national park. More than 30 local, regional and national conservation organizations urged the board to reject the plan in a letter delivered Tuesday. Many speakers echoed their sentiments, decrying the damage to the landscape and saying the county would be forever changed by the industrial corridor. Manassas National Battlefield Acting Director Raquel Montez stayed until after 5 a.m. to offer comments about the park’s concerns about impacts on wildlife, views, traffic and visitor experiences. In an interview, Montez said the park’s first choice would be for the area to retain its rural character. Montez’s predecessor, Brandon Bies, called the plan the “greatest threat to the park in three decades” late last year. “Do we like the proposal? No. But we understand that the landowners want to sell their land and that’s between them and the county,” Montez said.
Plan seeks to mix centers with open space
The vote means that the 2,139 acres in the PW Digital Gateway “study area” will be redesignated from “agricultural and estate,” where development is limited to one home on 10 acres, to a mix of “tech/ flex” buildings, parks, open space and environmental uses. The Gateway study area is composed of 194 parcels stretching from U.S. 29 to Sudley Road along Pageland Lane in Gainesville.

Board of Supervisors Chair Ann Wheeler, D-At Large, and Margaret Franklin, D-Woodbridge, listen during the 14-hour public hearing. The largest portion – 1,321 acres – is now “tech/flex,” allowing for up to 27.6 million square feet of data center space. That’s nearly as big as the 29 million square feet of data centers operating in Loudoun County, the largest data center hub in the United States. About 800 privately owned acres are now redesignated as future parks and open space, while 9.6 acres are designated a “county historic registered site” and 440 acres will remain an environmental resource protection area. For the data centers to be built, the areas would still need to be rezoned. The county has received three rezoning applications covering 1,600 acres. The Gateway plan envisions that about 10 acres closest to the battlefield will be donated to the battlefield, but it’s not clear how that will happen. County staff said during the meeting that the county could buy the land or acquire it through other “tools” such as developer incentives. In his motion, Angry added more than a dozen changes to the staff’s latest version of the Gateway amendment to address historic preservation guidelines, stormwater management, wildlife corridors, noise mitigations, water quality testing and road design measures that board members said would prevent a widened Pageland Lane from becoming a “backdoor to the Bi-County Parkway.” The plan proposes widening Pageland Lane to four lanes, which some residents had feared would essentially complete a key segment that could revive the formerly proposed parkway. According to the plan, the widened roadway should be designed with roundabouts spaced to require the speed limit to be 45 miles per hour rather than the 55 that might be
expected on a road like the Bi-County Parkway. The widened Pageland Lane is also proposed to connect only U.S. 29 and Sudley Road and not extend farther north into Loudoun as the original Bi-County Parkway would have. The supervisors also strengthened guidelines for archeological investigation throughout the corridor, set guidelines to preserve in place any human remains discovered and to not disturb areas of historical significance, if possible. Franklin and Boddye said those areas should include the northeast corner of the study area, which is believed to be the location of the birthplace of Jennie Dean, a local icon who was born enslaved and later founded the first high school in Northern Virginia for African American students. After debate, Angry conceded to adding the county staff’s recommendation encouraging developers to maintain three wildlife corridors of at least 300 to 500 feet in width. Angry said he hoped the county could be flexible about the location
of those corridors at the rezoning phase. But those changes weren’t enough to placate Vega and Lawson, who criticized their fellow supervisors for not taking more time to study impacts on the Occoquan watershed or analyze the cost of needed infrastructure, such as water, sewer and power lines. “In 2019, at least half of us ran on preserving the rural crescent, and none of us ran on turning it into the largest data center corridor in the world,” Vega said before the vote. “What really disgusts me about this process is that it has not been transparent.” Vega, the GOP nominee for U.S. Congress in the 7th District, said calls for further study were not unreasonable. “You were asking your elected representatives to be diligent, to slow down, to be thorough.” Vega said she might have supported the plan if the extra scrutiny “checked out.” Lawson, however, said the plan “is not a golden goose but rather fools’ gold” and criticized the plan as a “shortsighted” effort “to appease big tech … and a small group of landowners.” Lawson said that if the board wanted to raise its commercial tax base it only had to raise the county’s tax rate on computers and peripherals, which at $1.65 per $100 in assessed value is significantly lower than Loudoun, Fauquier and Fairfax counties. Angry defended the plan as “bold” and said the county had to “take a shot.” Wheeler agreed, saying: “This is a bold plan.” She also chastised the plan’s critics for not working together to make the plan as good as it could be and downplayed the plan’s environmental impacts, saying: “Sustainability is not about doing nothing. It is about doing things well.” “I know this is a good project for Prince William County,” Wheeler said. “I know we will do the stormwater protections well. … We are a county that needs to move forward, and we need to do it together.” Reach Jill Palermo at jpalermo@ fauquier.com HOW TO REACH US

Prince William sees a rise in illness caused by respiratory viruses By Cher Muzyk
Times Staff Writer
A week after Stafford High School reported 1,000 students absent due to flu-like symptoms and Inova Fairfax Hospital activated its emergency operations due to a surge in patients, respiratory illnesses are now on the rise in Prince William schools and hospitals. Enough students at The Nokesville School and Ellis Elementary in Manassas came down with flulike symptoms last week that special notices were emailed to parents and guardians. “An unusually high number of students were absent this week due to individual reported cases of flu and flu-like symptoms,” Nokesville School Principal Andrew Jacks said in a Wednesday, Oct. 26 email. Two days later, Ellis Elementary Principal Laura Gazda sent a nearly identical email to families. Both emails said symptoms include “fever, feeling feverish/chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue (tiredness).” Some have also experienced “vomiting and diarrhea.” The latter symptoms are “more common in children than adults,” the emails said. However, only a “small portion of those patients are requiring admission to the hospital for further care,” Tang said. Fairfax planning staff: Keep Pageland Lane agricultural
Fairfax supervisors debate how to weigh in
Meanwhile, the Fairfax County Planning staff sent an even stronger letter to the Prince William Board and planning staff this week urging that they retain Pageland Lane’s agricultural zoning to protect not only the water quality in the Occoquan Reservoir but also the cultural and historic integrity of Manassas National Battlefield Park. Fairfax County’s letter, signed by Deputy County Executive Rachel Flynn, was written in response to the Pathway to 2040 comprehensive plan update. While Flynn said the office mixed-use designation “would not be as extensive as the proposed Digital Gateway,” she said it would still allow commercial uses “across a broad area incongruous with the surrounding landscape.” Flynn also noted the proximity of Pageland Lane to the 5,071-acre Manassas battlefield and cited the National Park Service’s “strong opposition to the Digital Gateway proposal due to ‘certain’ and ‘substantial negative impacts’ on historic resources both within and outside the park.” Commercial development of the rural area would require regrading and add impervious surfaces, which would increase “runoff, stream channel erosion, sedimentation, water salinization, heat buildup and noise,” Flynn wrote. “Impacts are expected to intermittent and perennial streams, wetlands, steep slopes, soil resources, wildlife habitat (including that of rare, threatened and endangered species) and wildlife corridors.” Accordingly, the letter recommended that the Pageland Lane corridor remain agricultural.
Fairfax: Road plans problematic
Fairfax County planning staff further said Prince William’s proposal to eventually build a bypass to direct traffic away from the U.S. 29 and Va. 234 – and out of the battlefield – could be problematic for their residents. A suggested northern route, or the “Battlefield Bypass,” would run into environmental constraints and impact homes and businesses, while the southern route, or the “U.S. 29 Alternative,” has no existing connection in Fairfax County, the letter says. The letter was addressed to the Prince William supervisors as well as Prince William County’s Deputy County Executive and acting Planning Director Rebecca Horner. Neither Horner nor the county’s spokeswoman responded to a request for comment on the letter this week.

Prince William County Supervisor Jeanine Lawson, R-Brentsville, read portions of letters Fairfax County officials sent to the Prince William Board regarding their concerns about the Prince William Digital Gateway during a Friday, Oct. 28 press conference she held near the Occoquan Reservoir in Lake Ridge. During a Friday, Oct. 28 press conference called by Supervisor Jeanine Lawson, R-Brentsville, on the banks of the Occoquan Reservoir at Lake Ridge Marina, Lawson read from some of the letters Fairfax County officials have sent to the Prince William supervisors regarding the PW Digital Gateway and Pathway to 2040. The reservoir is owned by Fairfax County, and Prince William Service Authority purchases much of its drinking water from the Fairfax County Water Authority. Lawson noted it’s especially unusual for the Fairfax supervisors and Fairfax Water Authority to weigh in on Prince William land-use proposals and said she hoped her fellow supervisors would “heed their warnings.” “They have expressed, in articulate documents, from experts, to slow this down and complete the water studies to understand the impacts that a 27.6 million-square-foot industrial corridor could have on this water supply,” Lawson said. “I think that we … should stop and listen to them and delay this comprehensive plan amendment and conduct
sense policies is what we want and NOW!” Trump wrote. Trump went on to call Vega’s opponent, U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D), a former federal law enforcement and CIA agent, a “radical left” and “a disaster on crime.” Spanberger, Trump said, “will Defund our great Police and destroy our Second Amendment.” Spanberger criticized her fellow Democrats for using the phrase “defund the police” after the 2020 election, which she narrowly won against Del. Nick Freitas by less than 2 points. Spanberger contended that the Democrats never meant that funding for law-enforcement would be reduced even if Democrats sought additional funding for social services as a means of fighting crime. While in office, Spanberger has sponsored successful legislation to provide police departments more resources to fight cybercrime and has advocated
During their Oct. 25 meeting, the Fairfax supervisors debated how strong a stance to take against their neighbors’ plans. Board Chairman Jeff McKay, D-At Large, said the supervisors’ letter was being sent because of “the magnitude of the proposals being considered.” “While not our usual practice, we believe it’s appropriate for our board to send a letter to the Prince William Board of County Supervisors endorsing our staff’s memos and requesting that prior to any zoning actions, additional study and coordination occur so that the two counties can continue to work together to address issues of mutual concern,” McKay said. At the suggestion of Supervisor Pat Herrity, R-Springfield, the Fairfax board considered sending an even stronger letter that would mirror the planning staff’s request that Prince William delay its vote on the PW Digital Gateway comprehensive plan amendment and the Pathway to 2040 update until the regional water study is complete. “It impacts the Occoquan Watershed--anything that does is of critical importance to me and should be to anybody who drinks Fairfax water,” Herrity said. Supervisor Walter Alcorn, D-Hunter Mill, called the potential closure of U.S. 29 through the battlefield and the change of the area’s rural designation “pretty big bombs.” Supervisor James Walkinshaw, D-Braddock, said he grew up near Pageland Lane and is “intimately familiar” with Prince William County’s land-use policies. “I agree with everything that’s in the staff letter, especially with respect to the watershed and potential impacts on the watershed,” Walkinshaw said. Still, he said he was “very uncomfortable” discussing “Prince William County’s process.” Vice Chair Penny Gross, D-Mason, said she agreed that Prince William should make its own decisions, but added: “When it comes to water, especially, water doesn’t know any boundaries.” The Fairfax supervisors ultimately approved McKay’s version of the letter. There’s no indication yet, however, that Prince William County supervisors will comply with the request. Northern Virginia Regional Commission officials said in August that the watershed study could take about 18 months to complete. Reach Cher Muzyk and Jill Palermo at news@ fauquier.com
for better pay for law-enforcement agents. Vega is a former police officer and serves as a volunteer auxiliary deputy sheriff with the Prince William County Sheriff’s Office. After she was elected to the Prince William Board of Supervisors in 2019, she announced in 2020 she was appointed by Trump to his “Advisory Commission on Hispanic Prosperity.” Vega touted her ties to the former president during the primary but then removed any mention of him from her Twitter page after she won the Republican primary in June, according to reporting by the Washington Post. Vega has campaigned with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and touts endorsements from Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, Lt. Governor Winsome Sears and Attorney General Jason Miyares on her website. It’s unlikely Trump’s endorsement will be helpful in Vegas chal-
lenge to Spanberger, as Trump was unpopular both in Virginia and in Prince William County, where a plurality -- about 35% -- of 7th District voters live. In 2020, Trump lost Prince William County by more than 61,000 votes. In Stafford County, where more than 19% of the 7th District voters live, Trump lost by more than 3,000 votes in 2020. Stafford voters picked Trump over Hillary Clinton in 2016, however, by about 5,000 votes, according to the Virginia Department of Elections. Spanberger took to Twitter to announce Trump’s endorsement of her opponent, saying: “Tonight my opponent was endorsed by former President Donald Trump. Virginians are exhausted by his division, lies and hyper-partisanship.” Reach Jill Palermo at jpalermo@ fauquier.com

Metro Silver Line Extension announces Nov. 15 opening 6 more stations to open, including Dulles airport Staff Reports Metro officials announced Monday that the long-awaited Silver Line Extension, which will offer Metro service to the Washington Dulles International Airport for the first time, will open Tuesday, Nov. 15. The extension completes the final phase of the full 23-mile expansion that began construction in 2009. The first segment opened five years later, in 2014. The final section took another eight years. Metro board members and employees made the announcement Monday, Oct. 31 in a video touting: “We’re Ready.” The opening marks the largest expansion of Metrorail since the system’s inception, according to a WMATA news release. “We appreciate our partners at MWAA, FTA, WMSC, Fairfax and Loudoun counties who have worked collaboratively with us for several years to reach this moment,” Metro General Manager/CEO Randy Clarke said in the release. New Metro stations opening that day include: Reston Town Center, Herndon, Innovation Center, Washington Dulles International Airport, Loudoun Gateway and Ashburn. Prince William sees a rise in illness caused by respiratory viruses VIRUS, from page 3 “Public health surveillance indicates Virginia may experience a challenging flu and respiratory disease season this fall and winter,” VDH said. Emergency visits for RSV “have quadrupled and have been rapidly increasing in Virginia … since early September,” according to the release. Respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. Most people recover in a week or two, but RSV can be serious, especially for infants and older adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “We are hearing from hospital members that RSV cases and hospitalizations, particularly among pediatric patients, are rapidly rising,” said Julian Walker, vice president
of communications for the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. The VDH also reported that for the week ending Oct. 15, the percent of influenza-like illness visits was higher than it had been during the same week for the last five years. Doctors are recommending that “everyone [receive] their influenza vaccination, even children,” Min said. He also recommends frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes and getting as much as rest as possible. “Getting a good night’s sleep every night will help keep your immune system strong,” he said. Those who do get sick should stay home to “rest and recover,” he said. “It is better to stay home for one day and recover then miss three to four days with a much more severe illness,” he said. the community,” Carr said. Earlier Thursday, Oct. 27, a shooting in Dale City left a juvenile male injured. That shooting was reported to have occurred in a residential area and was reported by police via a tweet at about 7:20 p.m. Police have not yet released further details about that incident. Anyone with information regarding the shootings is asked to contact the Prince William County Police Department tipline at 703-792-7000 or submit a webtip to: pwcva.gov/policetip.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Part-time county rec workers have to pay to use county gyms. They need collective bargaining. I am a personal trainer and group fitness instructor with Prince William County’s Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department. I work out of the Dale City Rec Center and Chinn Fitness and Aquatic Center. I’ve been in my current position for six years. I love what I do because I get to work with all kinds of people in our community, from helping young people set the foundation for a healthy life, to working with retirees and seniors to help them achieve their fitness goals. Many corporate gyms can be intimidating and confusing and not family or community oriented. That’s why I chose to work for Prince William County instead of private companies – to provide real value and help underserved populations. Returning from the pandemic has been slow going, and many citizens still don’t trust coming back to our rec centers. There seems to have been fewer members returning and/ or joining our rec centers, and we lost many quality instructors due to being shut down for the pandemic. To make things worse, the county decided to take away our access to the very facilities where we work. Instead of being able to lead by example in our gyms – working out, training, learning the latest techniques – we are now having to pay to train at them. I know trainers who were injured as a result of not
being able to access all the equipment for a long period of time. Many of us are part-time workers with no benefits. We are not paid very much, so the extra costs really add up. Taking away this benefit amounts to a pay cut. This is not right. It’s time for a change. We need a voice on the job to lift these concerns and to make sure we retain the best workers possible. We do this work every day. We see what’s working and what isn’t and can recommend important changes that ensure we provide the best services possible. I encourage the Prince William County Board of Supervisors to pass an ordinance that will allow all county employees to come together in our union, give us the freedom to organize without fear and give us the right to negotiate over wages, benefits and working conditions. I joined other general Prince William County workers in SEIU Virginia 512 so we can all work together to win a better future for our families and our communities. Please pass a meaningful collective bargaining ordinance that allows my co-workers and me to bargain over pay, benefits and working conditions so that we can make Prince William a wonderful place for all working families. ANN MEDFORD Woodbridge
Taxes are too high in Prince William County. More data centers would help. From high property taxes to the new 4% food and beverage tax, the current Prince William County Board of Supervisors has used its power to add to the burden of citizens already buckling under the “hidden tax” of runaway inflation. The county spends too much and then claims there is not enough revenue. At the same time, the board has approved new residential development while neglecting a healthy ratio of business development. That is important because residential development tends to pay lower taxes while consuming more government services. And business development tends to pay higher taxes while consuming fewer gov-
ernment services. An example of this type of needed development is the proposed Prince William Digital Gateway. The new data centers that are part of the Prince William Digital Gateway could help restore a healthy balance of business development to Prince William County and make it easier for the supervisors to cut taxes instead of constantly raising them. That would be a boon to our County and its taxpayers. It’s time for the board of county supervisors to approve the Prince William Digital Gateway. JOHN HINKLE Nokesville
Gainesville lacks a voice while our home values are at risk I write to highlight an issue that has been overlooked in the discussion regarding the proposed Prince William Digital Gateway. Because Gainesville District Supervisor Peter Candland, who represents the area of the county in question, has a conflict of interest and has thus recused himself from the board’s consideration of this issue, the very county residents whose homes are in the closest proximity to the PW Digital Gate-
way are without any dedicated representative on the Board to advocate their interests. For this reason alone, the board should not approve the controversial PW Gateway, which threatens to substantially diminish the property values of those living in the Gainesville District (not to mention the scores of other objections that residents living in the District have raised). PATRICK BRYAN Gainesville
Not so shiny any more Former President Ronald Reagan sought to inspire the country by speaking of it. Years earlier, President John F. Kennedy had drawn courage and guidance from it. President Barack Obama later proclaimed hope and enlightenment because of it. And Sen. Mitt Romney warned of its possible demise. But it is now covered in ashes, dirt and debris. The “Shining City Upon a Hill” is barely recognizable. The beacon of hope has been reduced to nothing more than a fading ember, hidden far beneath layers of rubble. There will always be issues on which we will never see eye to eye. But it is imperative that we look to the place far beyond those differences. Despite the numerous disagreements that we may have, there remains an undercurrent of decency

and humanity that flows through the majority of us. Ask yourself: Who knows our community well enough that she will keep our best interests, as well as those of the Nation, at the forefront of their work? She is a person who has had the experience of crossing the aisle to work with all of those who may vehemently disagree with her and arrive at a common solution based on respect and compromise. Discussions always remain at a reasonable and respective level. Hatred, vitriol and distorted information are never part of the equation. The soul of the country is at stake. Be willing – and brave enough – to allow the City Upon the Hill to shine once again. That remains our only hope. RANDAL RECKA Ashburn

He was a lifelong member of the Morrisville United Methodist Church, where in recent years he served on the Cemetery committee. He enjoyed hunting and fishing of all types. When he had a boat, he especially enjoyed taking family and friends on the Chesapeake Bay to fish. He was a member of the Lions club. Claude was a native of the Morrisville and Remington areas. His high school senior class, in 1957, was the first to graduate from the recently renamed Cedar Lee, formerly Bealeton High School. He played both baseball and football in high school until time constraints of work on the farm limited his time. He was an active 4-H and Future Farmers of America member, as well as completing courses of instruction given by the Virginia Forest Service. He joined the National Guard while a senior in high school. After graduating, and marrying Zoraida Anns, he received six months of Army basic training at Fort Knox, KY, then served with the Warrenton Unit of the Virginia National Guard, US Army Reserve until March 1965. When he came home from basic training, he worked for a couple of years at Blackwell Engineering in DC, as well as in Norther VA. With a growing family and long hours spent commuting, he went to work for Ritchie Millwork and Lumber in Remington, VA. While there he learned the trade of a quality customer carpenter. He worked there about ten years, building houses as well as doing mill work. In his off hours, he would pick up extra jobs to help care for his enlarging family. When he left to go out on his own, as a home contractor, his excellent reputation as a quality and respected craftsman preceded him. He became a well-known builder in Fauquier and surrounding counties, building many private custom homes. Claude, his brother, Gene, and friend, Richard Barb, opened their own successful business “Custom Homes “ in the early 1980’s in which they sold building materials, custom cabinets and countertops. After retiring from carpentry, he followed his dream as a full-time farmer (his true love). In addition to farming his family farm, he leased hundreds of acres, sometimes as far away as western Stafford County, and as far north as Botha and Opal. He was an excellent farmer, and was helped immensely by his son. A memorial service was held at 1:00 pm on Sunday, October 30, 2022 at Morrisville United Methodist Church, with Pastor Beth Glass officiating. A time of fellowship followed. A mask is recommended, but not required. Interment will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Morrisville United Methodist Church, 4432 Morrisville Road, Bealeton, VA 22712.

Major Andrew “Drew” Vuillemot, USMC (ret.) passed away at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda late on July 7, 2022, after a prolonged battle with cancer. While at Navy, Drew never missed a chance to sing or hum “Hail to the Victors” loudly in the vicinity of his classmates that were from Ohio or were Ohio State Buckeye fans. He always loved the tradition of the Army/Navy rivalry and supported Navy Athletics every chance he had. Never one to mince words, he would want to let everyone know, “Go Navy! Beat Army!” Drew was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps upon graduating from Navy on May 20, 1987. He attended The Basic School at Marine Corps Base Quantico and Field Artillery Officer training at Ft. Sill Oklahoma. He was then stationed at Camp Pendleton as an artillery officer with Delta Battery, 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Like many of his peers, he answered the call to go to war and deployed to Kuwait and Iraq for Operation Desert Storm. His next assignment was at Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C., “The Oldest Post in The Corps” where he served as an artillery course writer for the Marine Corps Institute (MCI). His subsequent assignments included attending the Amphibious Warfare School at Quantico; staff officer with the 10th Marine Regiment at Camp Lejeune; Commanding Officer of Battery C in 1st Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment; Inspector-Instructor with 5th Battalion, 14th Marine Regiment in Aurora, CO; Battalion Executive Officer for the Combined Arms Training Center in Camp Fuji, Japan. He also attended the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterrey, California, where he earned a Master of Science in Information Technology Management. His military awards include: The Meritorious Service Medal with Gold Star, the Navy and Marine Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal; the Navy Combat Action Ribbon; the Navy Unit Commendation Medal with Bronze Star; the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal; the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star; the Southwest Asia Service Medal; the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; The Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon; the Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon; the Kuwait Liberation Medal presented by the Saudi Arabian government; the Kuwait Liberation Medal presented by the government of Kuwait; and the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara by the United States Field Artillery Association. He retired from active duty on May 31, 2007, after serving in Headquarters Service Battalion at Marine Corps Base Quantico. After retirement he continued is his service to the country as a government contractor for VMWare in the information technology arena where he was a Client Solutions Director. He deeply adored his wife Julie and children, James and Jeannine and they shared countless adventures together. Drew and his family loved trips to Colorado to ski, Nashville for country music and any trip that involved hockey, baseball or Navy Football. Drew was always first to jump at the chance to travel and became the “travel agent“ planning trips and adventures for friends and family. To Drew, holidays were meant for fun, and he rarely missed the chance to enjoy celebrating with friends and family; including an annual St. Patrick’s Day tradition which began with breakfast and ended late in the evening. He also liked to cook his “family gumbo recipe” and hosted many Mardi Gras celebrations. Drew was an avid sports fan, especially Navy football - and was an active member of the USNA ’87 Tailgate Volunteer crew. He enjoyed spending his Saturdays during college football season setting up, cooking and spending time with his fellow Naval Academy classmates. Drew was also a participant and fan of anything to do with baseball, hockey, and skiing. He coached youth hockey (even a few times when his children were NOT on his team) and was the team captain for the Hotdogs of the adult beer hockey league for many years. His passion for sports never wavered. Despite his declining health, he continued to attend Capitals hockey games, Nationals, Orioles and Rockies baseball games and even managed to attend Game 2 of the 2022 Stanley Cup Finals in Colorado in June cheering his favorite team, the Colorado Avalanche, to victory. Drew is survived by his wife, Julie, adult children James and Jeannine, sisters Liz Wilson of Saugatuck, MI and Annie Vuillemot of South Lyon, MI, his mother Sandra Vuillemot and his stepmother Nancy Vuillemot both of Milford, MI. His father, George Vuillemot preceded him in death. The family requests those who wish to express sympathy consider donating to Hockey Fights Cancer, the USNA Foundation, or a charity of your choice in Drew’s name. Drew will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery Friday, December 2, 2022 Reception to follow at Army/Navy Country Club, Arlington. Those planning to attend, please RSVP by November 10 to vuillemot.julie@gmail.com for additional information and Ft. Myer access information.

John David South II John David South II, 52, of Locust Grove, Virginia, unexpectedly passed away on October 22, 2022. John and his wife were traveling to his late sisters’ funeral in Florida when they were involved in a tragic car accident. John was predeceased by his son Tyler South, father John South Sr., sister Kelli Jo Carpenter and his grandparents Donald and Alice Trenum. John was survived by his wife Donna South, children Carly South (Kyle), Nathanael South (Haley), Cheyenne Fowler, Zachary Fowler (Kristen), grandchildren Westin, Willow, Maleigha, Messiah, Myles, Paige and Jase. His mother Sylvia Trenum, bonus mother Kathleen South, sisters Kristina Adams (David), Crystal Charles (Winston), Alicia Johnson (Samuel), Leah South, brother Mike South (Holly), 15 nieces and nephews, 5 great nieces and nephews, and many aunt, uncles, and cousins. John was born in Middletown Ohio on December 13, 1969 to John South Sr. and Sylvia Trenum. As John’s parents divorced, each remarried, and his family expanded greatly. He became the big brother to 6 siblings, he loved all his family deeply and equally. John lived in Virginia, Florida, Texas, and Ohio throughout his life, sharing his time with all of his family. John attended High School in Ohio where he married and became the father to his three beautiful children. In addition to his role as a father, husband, and provider he continued onto college receiving his Bachelor’s Degree. John soon moved to Virginia permanently where began his 25 year career as the IT Manager for S W Rodgers Co Inc. John married his second wife Donna in 2010. Donna was the love of John’s life and a true partner. They both had loving relationships with each others’ children and families, they loved each as their own. Their relationship is a beautiful example of Godly marriage. To say John was talented is an understatement. John was blessed with many gifts and talents; he could do anything he set his mind to. John enjoyed singing, playing his guitar, playing drums, tinkering with cars or motors and photography. He was highly successful and relied upon in his IT career. However, his greatest gift was the ability to make everyone laugh. Even though he never wanted to be the center of attention, his comedic personality would light up the room. Anyone who knew John couldn’t help but to be charmed by him. He always had a smile and joke, which he usually couldn’t finish before laughing himself. When he wasn’t cracking jokes John could be found outdoors. Whether it was trail-riding, taking photos or hunting down Bigfoot, basking in nature was his favorite place to be. John was a loving father, husband, brother, uncle, cousin, nephew, and more. He avoided confrontation but would always stand up for what he believed was right. He did not know a stranger and when he spoke to you he never made you feel less than the most important person in the room. John will be greatly missed by all who knew him. John’s services will be held at Moser Funeral Home located at 233 Broadview Ave, Warrenton Va 20186 on November 5th, 2022. Visitation will be from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, service to follow. There will not be a graveside service as John wished to be cremated after his viewing. John was an outdoorsman and loved nature therefore, in lieu of flowers please send live plants. Other donations or gifts are appreciated and should be forwarded directly to John’s wife, Donna South.
