Local pedestrians hit by vehicles reached a 13-year high in 2023 118 injured, 6 killed in 2023, according to state records Hunter Savery

The number of people hit by motor vehicles in both Prince William and Fauquier counties hit record highs in 2023, according to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. There were more vehicle crashes involving pedestrians in the two counties than in any year since 2010, when the Virginia DMV began making crash statistics publicly available. In Prince William County, the number of injuries from those crashes jumped 35% from 2022 to 2023. In Fauquier County, injuries tripled in 2023. Prince William County had 91 crashes involving pedestrians in 2023, resulting in an unprecedented 118 injuries and six deaths. In more rural Fauquier County, there have been 12 crashes involving pedestrians, resulting in 12 injuries and one death.

Prince William County police respond to a fatal, hit and run pedestrian crash in Manassas in April 2023 that left a 50-year-old homeless man dead.

This is the highest number of pedestrian-involved accidents and injuries ever recorded in Fauquier. Across the nation, pedestrian deaths have reached a 40-year high, with more than 7,500 pedestrians killed by drivers in 2022, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association. The organization’s report issued earlier this year shows that Virginia had the second-highest increase in pedestrian deaths in the United States from 2021 to 2022, only narrowly lagging Arizona. “It’s been a perfect storm of dangerous driving,” said Adam Snider, spokesperson for the Governors Highway Safety Association. Pedestrian deaths hit an all-time high in Prince William in 2022 with 11 deaths. The rise in pedestrian deaths comes from a confluence of factors that have made walking in America more dangerous. Poor infrastructure, distracted driving and increased homelessness have all been cited as possible contributing causes. See CRASHES, page 2

A retired U.S. Army colonel, who played a pivotal role in the first impeachment of former President Donald Trump and has been quietly living in Dale City since 2016, is running to represent eastern Prince William County in Congress. Yevgeny “Eugene” Vindman’s life was turned upside down in 2019 when Trump forced his retirement after a nearly 25-year military career for his part in revealing that Trump pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to investigate Joe Biden, then a political rival, while withholding foreign aid and a coveted invitation to the White House. “We went through a lot during the impeachment, a lot of hate and death threats,” Vindman, 48, said in a recent interview with the Prince

Prince William County Executive Chris Shorter and County Attorney Michelle Robl recently received raises from the board of supervisors that make them the highest-paid officials in those roles among Northern Virginia’s largest counties. The Prince William Board of County Supervisors voted earlier this month to award Shorter, 45, a 9% raise and Robl, 59, a 3% raise. Shorter’s new salary is $382,130 and Robl’s is $343,917, according to Nikki Brown, a Prince William County spokeswoman. In Loudoun County, the county administrator and county attorney are paid $325,000 and $301,126, respectively, according to Loudoun County spokesman Glen Barbour. In Fairfax County, the county executive and county attorney are paid $377,147.01 and $313,934.64, respectively, according to a Fairfax County spokesman. Robl has been Prince William County’s attorney since 2015, while Shorter began his tenure with the county on Jan. 3. Shorter’s starting salary was $350,000. Shorter’s raise is retroactive to July 1, while Robl’s is retroactive to Oct. 1. The board voted 7-0 with one

abstention — from Supervisor Bob Weir, R-Gainesville — to approve Shorter’s raise, while Robl’s was approved on a unanimous vote. “I just did not agree with what was added to (his contract),” Weir said, noting that he could not go into specifics because Shorter’s contract was discussed in closed session. Shorter is receiving the same 6% increase that was awarded to all general government employees as of July 1, as well as a 3% merit increase that is retroactive to Oct. 1, according to county documents. Shorter’s compensation adjustments also included a guarantee of one year of compensation and two months of health insurance coverage if terminated without cause by the board. Both Robl and Shorter will undergo their next performance review on or about Oct. 1, 2024. Reach Shannon Clark at sclark@ fauquier.com.

Pedestrian-involved crashes reached a 13-year high in 2023 CRASHES, from page 1 One factor is the ever-growing size of American vehicles. In recent years, consumers have gravitated toward larger and heavier SUVs and pickup trucks, which have more significant blind spots and higher front ends. When a typical passenger car strikes a pedestrian, it usually hits them in the legs, but SUVs and trucks hit them in the chest or head, dramatically increasing the likelihood of a fatal injury. The larger vehicles have more mass as well, leading them to hit pedestrians with greater force, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association. “It’s simple physics. The heavier a vehicle is, the more force it will impart in a collision,” Snider said. “The grills and hoods have gotten higher and higher, and in an SUV or truck, your line of sight is never as good as in a smaller vehicle.” Despite the danger to pedestrians, trucks and SUVs now account for more than 80% of all cars sold in the United States. According to the Virginia Automobile Dealers Association, the number is even higher

in Virginia. In September — the most recent month with available data — SUVs and light trucks accounted for 83% of all vehicles registered in the commonwealth that month. Only 6,892 new cars were registered in September, compared to 34,163 SUVs and light trucks. Ten years ago, light trucks and SUVs accounted for only 32% of Virginia automobile registrations. The 51% jump in truck and SUV registrations tracks with the growing number of pedestrian-involved accidents in the commonwealth. Beyond buying smaller vehicles and encouraging local leaders to invest in pedestrian infrastructure, Snider says all drivers can play a role in making the streets safer for pedestrians. “There is something you can do,” Snider said. “Drivers have choices to make. Speeding home 10-plus miles over the speed limit after you’ve had a drink or two can seriously affect the life of someone out for a walk, getting groceries or picking up their kids from school. We all have a role to play in making our roads safer.” Reach Hunter Savery at hsavery@fauquier.com

Boddye’s abstention was key to Digital Gateway’s approval Supervisor said he had mixed feelings but didn’t want to leave the project in limbo By Shannon Clark Times Staff Writer

With the recent vote to approve the controversial Prince William Digital Gateway, Prince William County is on track to become the data center capital of North America — if not the world. Critical to the project’s approval was Supervisor Kenny Boddye’s decision to abstain, allowing it to pass on a split 4-3-1 vote. Boddye’s move to take a pass on the most consequential commercial rezoning in the county’s recent history — effectively ensuring its approval — stunned the project’s opponents. Many considered Boddye a possible no vote, due to his vocal support for the county’s environmental sustainability efforts and his previous statements that he would not approve the PW Digital Gateway rezonings unless they adhered to the supervisors’ 2022 “comprehensive plan amendment” that outlined their vision for the massive data center development. The PW Digital Gateway will open about 1,760 acres of homes and farmland adjacent to Manassas National Battlefield Park to as many as 37 data centers. The project has been controversial since it was proposed in 2021 by landowners who contend their properties are “no longer rural” due to their proximity to high-power transmission lines and increasing commuter traffic. Just over 100 property owners negotiated a deal to sell their land to data center developers before bringing the plan to the county for approval. The county’s professional planning staff recommended against the PW Digital Gateway rezonings because the developers’ plans fell short of the comprehensive plan amendment in terms of open space and other issues.

Supervisor Kenny Boddye, D-Occoquan, during the Dec. 12 to 13 Prince William Digital Gateway public hearing. On Tuesday, Dec. 19, Boddye told the Prince William Times that’s partly why he withheld his vote. “Unfortunately, we were in a place where the applicant, to the best of their ability, believed that they had fulfilled (the requirements of the CPA) based on the proffers they were giving,” Boddye said, referring to the developers’ promises with regard to open space, wildlife corridors and other issues “The (planning) staff disagreed with them.” Boddye also said he abstained due to his own interpretation of a last-minute change in the project’s “floor-area ratio” — that is, the density allowed in the area closest to the Manassas National Battlefield Park. Boddye said the developers’ plans were not “completely in line (with the supervisors’ CPA) based on staff analysis,” but said he believed they “had done enough work,” to come close. “I was no longer in a position where I was going to oppose it,” Boddye said. “But I couldn’t, in good conscience, vote to approve it completely based on those inconsistencies.” Donald Garrett, a professional registered parliamentarian with the National Association of

Parliamentarians, said elected officials typically don’t abstain on major policy votes without good reason, such as “conflicts of interest, dissatisfaction with the process, lack of knowledge, needing more time or protesting superfluous proposals.” Garrett also said elected officials “should be accountable to (their) constituents as to why (they) choose not to vote or stay neutral on an important public matter.” “Just like a yes or no vote, voters should have information on their elected official’s choice to not vote so they can make a judgment on the official’s performance when it is election time,” Garrett said. Boddye did not explain his decision to abstain prior to the vote. About an hour before the vote, Boddye said he “struggled to support (the) project in its current form,” and reiterated that he would “only support this rezoning if it lived up to ... the comprehensive plan.” “We’ve done some work as a board over the last 24 hours or so to get it closer, but I still struggle to see how we have completely gotten there. This isn’t a small project,” Boddye said during the meeting. Following his comments, Boddye, a Democrat, voted with the board’s three Republicans to deny all three of the rezonings, a motion made by Supervisor Bob Weir (Gainesville), whose district includes the PW Digital Gateway. That vote failed 4-4, with the other four Democrats on the board voting against denying the project. Boddye then proposed a motion to approve the rezonings without the land bay closest to the battlefield and Conway Robinson State Forest, but it failed to receive a second. “One of the biggest concerns I’ve had since the beginning is the close proximity of the southern land bays to Manassas Battlefield Park and Conway Robinson,” Boddye said, prior to his motion. ‘Democracy is on the line’ VINDMAN, from page 1 “I’ve never been intimidated — whether it was the president or anybody else coming after me,” Vindman said, explaining that he’s “not done serving.” Vindman says his new mission is to run for Congress in Virginia’s 7th District, which spans Northern and Central Virginia and includes the eastern half of Prince William County, which includes nearly a third of the district’s voters. Vindman is one of five Democrats vying for their party’s nomination to replace Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D), who is vacating her seat to run for governor of Virginia. Vindman said he and his wife, Cindy, have enjoyed raising their kids, Max and Madi, in their first long-term home. “This is the longest I’ve lived anywhere and the only place I have gotten to choose,” Vindman said, explaining that the military chose his family’s duty stations throughout his career. It was easy to choose Dale Citybecause “my twin brother lived four doors down from where I live now.” Though his twin brother, Alexander Vindman, recently moved to Florida, Vindman chose to stay. Vindman’s twin brother, retired Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, heard the call during which Trump pressured Zelenskyy and provided testimony about it before Congress, which was used as evidence in Trump’s first im-

peachment. He, too, was forced into an early military retirement by Trump. Eugene Vindman said he and his family have enjoyed living in Prince William County for the last seven years. “We’ve got Leesylvania Park right down the street. We’ve got Prince William Forest, where my wife and I do weekly runs, and the (Neabsco) boardwalk, which is magnificent,” Eugene Vindman said. “We have good schools; we have shopping. I mean, what’s not to like?” Vindman answered his own question when he continued: “I don’t like the commute to D.C. The commute’s terrible; that’s why infrastructure is such a critical issue for me.” If he wins his party’s nomination and is elected in November, Vindman said he would work on bringing “both dollars and plans” to the Interstate 95 corridor. “To alleviate the issue with congestion on 95, it can’t just be a road issue,” he said. The solution, he said, is multifaceted and includes multi-modal transportation, meaning improved public transportation as well as attracting more mixed-use development. “Those types of developments ... where people can live near where they work, would alleviate a lot of infrastructure issues,” Vindman said. “I think they’re going to be beneficial to this area. I think that’s what makes Stonebridge an attractive place to live.” Stonebridge Potomac Town Center has more than 300 dwelling units — a mix of townhouses and apartments — as well as a movie theater, several retail

stores, a health club and a Wegman’s supermarket. It also will be home to the county’s newest parking garage, which is being designed to be a hub for commuter buses right off I-95. As for the local schools, Vindman says he is a product of public schools all the way through law school and is a strong advocate for properly funding them. “Public school is part of building a society,” Vindman said. “It’s critically important to have strong public schools and prepare kids for the 21st century.” Vindman’s son graduated from Hylton High School and now attends The College of William & Mary, a public university, and his daughter attends Potomac Shores Middle School, he said. “My wife’s been a teacher. She’s got a Ph.D. in molecular genetics, but it’s hard to be a research scientist when you’re trailing a military spouse,” Vindman said. “So, she’s been a schoolteacher in more schools than I can count.” Vindman said schools should be not only high quality but safe, and that means keeping guns out. “I’ve been in the profession of arms my entire adult life. … I’m a responsible gun owner,” Vindman said. Vindman said he favors “very stringent regulations” for gun ownership, including background checks, red flag laws, licensing and storage requirements. He also said he is “open to an assault weapons ban,” because “the safety of the population here, the safety of kids is frankly paramount to me.” Immigration is another issue Vindman says he would work on if elected. “I am a strong believer in immigration,” he said. It “has always been our strength” and provides “a good return on investment.” Vindman fled Ukraine with his family in 1979, when he was 3. The country was part of the Soviet Union at that time. After Vindman’s mother died of cancer, Vindman’s father, a Jewish engineer, immigrated to the United States with his three young sons and mother-in-law. “He was fed up with the commu-

nist regime. There was a great deal of antisemitism. He wanted to provide us a better life,” Vindman said. “He had us in tow with $759 in his pocket when we landed … at JFK airport.” “The country took a chance on letting a middle-aged man in, an elderly woman, and … three minors who didn’t speak English,” Vindman said. “The three of us subsequently joined the military,” he added, referring to his brothers, Alexander and Leonid. “When we were tested, I think we met the challenge when it mattered most.” Since June 2022, Vindman has made 14 trips to Ukraine, investigating war crimes through a program funded by the U.S. Department of State called the “Atrocity Crimes Advisory Group,” he said. He and his twin brother also started a consulting company called Trident Support LLC that is “focused on helping bring technology to Ukraine and building capacity in Ukraine so they can win this conflict,” Vindman said. They also created a nonprofit that has raised over $10 million to support front-line ambulance services in Ukraine that have saved over 10,000 lives. The organization also trains thousands of Ukrainian combat medics and provides high-quality, extreme cold-weather gear to soldiers. “We pick objectives that are going to have strategic impacts,” Vindman said. Russian President Vladimir Putin “has violated a main principle of international law by attacking Ukraine,” Vindman said, which is why he believes the work he has done since his military retirement has been important. But in the United States, democracy is also at stake, Vindman said, which is why he is running for Congress. “Donald Trump is more and more likely to be on the ballot, and so democracy is on the line,” Vindman said. “You have Donald Trump on the ballot, nationally, with his lack of character, then you have Vindman on the ballot someplace, at least. I feel like I have lived by my values, especially when I blew the whistle on his misconduct.”

Boddye’s abstention was key to Digital Gateway’s approval BODDYE, from page 3 Following the over 26-hour public hearing on Dec. 12 to 13, the PW Digital Gateway was approved along party lines, with the four of the board’s five Democrats — Supervisors Margaret Franklin (Woodbridge), Andrea Bailey (Potomac), Victor Angry (Neabsco) and Board Chair Ann Wheeler (At-Large), voting in favor; the Republican Supervisors Jeanine Lawson (Brentsville), Weir and Yesli Vega (Coles) voting no; and Boddye (Occoquan) abstaining. When asked about the potential outcome of the vote if he had not abstained, Boddye said a tie vote would have stalled the project, as no action would have been taken. “But the other thing is that had we not acted, it would have put the project in a limbo that I don’t think a lot of

folks — for or against — would have ultimately wanted,” Boddye said. The PW Digital Gateway vote took place at the supervisors’ second-to-last meeting of the year and during the “lame duck” session following the Nov. 7 election. The timing was partly due to the pressure the data center developers placed on the supervisors to hold a public hearing before the end of the year, which was a stipulation of the developers’ purchase contracts with landowners, according to court documents. If the vote on the rezonings had been deferred until 2024, the project would have faced a more skeptical board led by incoming Board Chairelect Deshundra Jefferson (D) who has said she would have opposed the PW Digital Gateway. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

What hath Wheeler wrought By the time you read this, Prince William Board of County Supervisors Chair Ann Wheeler will have held her last meeting. A regrettable chapter in our history has closed, but it’s important to reflect while the acrimony of her tenure is still fresh in our minds. Those who heard her closing remarks during the marathon Prince William Digital Gateway public hearing marveled at the tone-deafness she has displayed throughout her tenure. She was incredulous that so few accepted her deceptive sales pitch, despite it being debunked by the county’s own professional staff. She vilified citizens who dared to oppose her vision of lightly developed land as a cash cow to be exploited by corporate predators. She brusquely dismissed thorough arguments and evidence presented by more than 30 environmental groups, claiming such groups oppose all

development. Those who didn’t buy her flimsy and rosy financial forecasts were “misinformed.” There’s an old maxim that says when you believe everyone else is deluded, the one actually mistaken is probably YOU. A politician so out-of-touch with public sentiment is clearly in the wrong line of work. If Ann Wheeler is still wondering why she was rejected by the members of her own party, she may be the last one so confused. Her legacy will be one of divisiveness. Even toward the end, she was determined to drive wedges deeper. She deliberately accelerated the railroading of two contentious land use cases that will scar and embroil this county for years. Prince William County says it aspires to be a community of choice. If so, that sales brochure is going to need a serious makeover. BILL WRIGHT Gainesville

As revenue projections declined, Digital Gateway support rose The Prince William Times article Dec. 13 provided a new estimate on tax revenue. “Since Compass has 17 of the 37 expected buildings, that would mean the total tax revenue for the Gateway could be about $200 million a year.” The amazing disappearing revenue estimate — I got involved in the issue because of the original $700 million estimate, which I knew was impossible. It was based on what Loudoun County was receiving for about the same amount of data center square footage. But the Prince William County tax rate on computers was $1.25, while Loudoun County’s was $4.25. When I brought this fact to Board of Supervisors Chair Ann Wheeler, she did not question the developers’ estimate at all. In 2022, the Prince William County finance office came back with its estimate using Prince William County tax rates, which pro-

duce max revenue of $400 million. Again, the supervisors’ advocacy did not change but only increased their support for the project. Now Compass and QTS plan to contribute only $100 million max tax revenue per year. The Prince William County finance office vastly overestimated the value of the computers. The companies declare the value of their own computer equipment, and there is no way for the county to estimate the real taxable amount. Compass and QTS are planning on using depreciation and other accounting tricks to greatly reduce their tax burden. What is amazing is that as these revenue estimates declined, the support for this project from the Democratic supervisors only increased. What other factors may have caused this strange happening? PUR-2023-00195 · Virginia Electric and Power Company d/b/a Dominion Energy Virginia (“Dominion”) has applied for approval to revise its rate adjustment clause, Rider Offshore Wind (“Rider OSW”). · In this case, Dominion has asked the State Corporation Commission (“Commission”) to approve Rider OSW for the rate year beginning September 1, 2024, and ending August 31, 2025 (“Rate Year”). · For the Rate Year, Dominion requests a revenue requirement of $485,933,455, which would increase the monthly bill of a typical residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per month by $3.89. · A Hearing Examiner appointed by the Commission will hold a telephonic hearing in this case on May 8, 2024, at 10 a.m., for the receipt of public witness testimony. · An evidentiary hearing will also be held on May 8, 2024, at 10 a.m., or at the conclusion of the public witness portion of the hearing, whichever is later, in the Commission’s second floor courtroom located in the Tyler Building, 1300 East Main Street, Richmond, Virginia 23219, to receive the testimony and evidence of Dominion, any respondents, and Commission Staff. · Further information about this case is available on the SCC website at: scc.virginia.gov/pages/Case-Information. On November 1, 2023, pursuant to Code § 56-585.1 A 6, Virginia Electric and Power Company (“Dominion” or “Company”) filed with the State Corporation Commission (“Commission”) an annual update with respect to the Company’s Rider OSW for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Commercial Project (“Application”). Through its Application, the Company seeks to inform the Commission of the status of the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Commercial Project (“Project”) and to provide the proposed cost allocation, rate design, and accounting treatment for service rendered during the proposed rate year commencing September 1, 2024, and extending through August 31, 2025 (“Rate Year”). According to the Application, the Project is proceeding on time and on budget, with certain minor modifications to the permitting schedule, though Dominion states those modifications are not expected to impact the planned in-service date of late 2026. The Company represents that the total Project cost forecast remains $9.8 billion (excluding financing costs), including approximately $1.4 billion of combined transmission costs. The Company requests that the Commission approve the updated expenditures for the Project, subject to subsequent true-ups, and find that such expenditures are reasonable and prudent in order to fulfill the Company’s service obligations as a public electric utility. In this proceeding, the Company is requesting a total revenue requirement of $485,933,455 for recovery in Rider OSW for the Rate Year. If the proposed Rider OSW revenue requirement for the Rate Year is approved, the impact on customer bills would depend on the customer’s rate schedule and usage. According to Dominion, implementation of its proposed Rider OSW on September 1, 2024, would increase the bill of a typical residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours per month by approximately $3.89. The Company indicates it has calculated the proposed Rider OSW rates in accordance with the same methodology as used for rates approved by the Commission in the previous Rider OSW proceeding, Case No. PUR-2022-00187. Interested persons are encouraged to review Dominion’s Application and supporting documents in full for details about these and other proposals. TAKE NOTICE that the Commission may apportion revenues among customer classes and/or design rates in a manner differing from that shown in the Application and supporting documents and thus may adopt rates that differ from those appearing in the Company’s Application and supporting documents. The Commission entered an Order for Notice and Hearing in this proceeding that, among other things, scheduled public hearings on Dominion’s Application. A hearing for the receipt of testimony from public witnesses on the Company’s Application shall be convened telephonically at 10 a.m. on May 8, 2024. On or before May 1, 2024, any person desiring to offer testimony as a public witness shall provide to the Commission (a) your name, and (b) the telephone number that you wish the Commission to call during the hearing to receive your testimony. This information may be provided to the Commission in three ways: (i) by filling out a form on the Commission’s website at scc.virginia.gov/pages/Webcasting; (ii) by completing and emailing the PDF version of this form to SCCInfo@scc.virginia.gov; or (iii) by calling (804) 371-9141. This public witness hearing will be webcast at scc.virginia.gov/pages/Webcasting. Beginning at 10 a.m. on May 8, 2024, the Hearing Examiner will telephone sequentially each person who has signed up to testify as provided above. On May 8, 2024, at 10 a.m., or at the conclusion of the public witness portion of the hearing, whichever is later, in the Commission’s second floor courtroom located in the Tyler Building, 1300 East Main Street, Richmond, Virginia 23219, the Hearing Examiner will convene a hearing to receive testimony and evidence related to the Application from the Company, any respondents, and the Commission Staff. To promote administrative efficiency and timely service of filings upon participants, the Commission has directed the electronic filing of testimony and pleadings, unless they contain confidential information, and required electronic service on parties to this proceeding. Electronic copies of the public version of the Application may be obtained by submitting a written request to counsel for the Company, Vishwa B. Link, Esquire, McGuireWoods LLP, Gateway Plaza, 800 East Canal Street, Richmond, Virginia 23219, or vlink@mcguirewoods.com. Come to the library to meet an ‘old friend’ New encyclopedias have arrived and can be checked out for your kids’ perusal by Kirk Johnson

Contributing Writer

The Prince William Public Libraries are committed to remaining current and topical, always open to new formats and sources of information and exploring new ways of accessing information. But sometimes, the familiar can be comforting and also, frankly, still gets the job done. In the age of databases, Wikipedia and web searches, the market for print encyclopedias has cratered. This is understandable. The cost of producing an encyclopedia set limits the potential customer base, and in a world where anybody can call up information on their phone for free, there’s a reason that the days of door-to-door encyclopedia salesmen are behind us. We also live in a world where many young people have rediscovered the novelty of older analog technologies. Many parents would love to see their kids following their interests without providing data for web providers or getting lured by algorithms beyond their initial interest. We have just received multiple sets of the 2024 edition of the famous World Book Encyclopedia, geared for younger readers. Our copies are circu-

What’s hot at the libraries: December 2023 Holiday downtime means more time to read By Kirk Johnson

Contributing Writer

The holidays are coming, and for many people, that means traveling, hosting, socializing, shopping and celebrating. The holidays are also a time to enjoy a little extra recreational reading. Here are a few new titles coming to your local Prince William Public Libraries branch. Melissa Rivero looks at a relationship between a mother and an adult daughter through the immigrant experience in “Flores and Miss Paula.” This novel portrays the relationship between a widowed Peruvian immigrant woman and her unmarried daughter. The two share an apartment and memories of their deceased husband/father but little else. That is, until the discovery of

a note triggers new doubts and old memories. This tender novel is being praised for its understanding of mother-daughter relationships and the immigrant experience. Ally Wilkes has made a name for herself as a writer of Gothic horror, and her newest novel, “Where the Dead Wait,” will only add to her acclaim. Set in the Victorian era of Arctic exploration, this unnerving story brings together threads of gothic, supernatural, historical fiction and straight-up horror. For young parents who have ever felt the anxiety of trying to gain acceptance with a new group of peers, the anxiety behind Katherine Faulkner’s “The Other Mothers” will strike a nerve. Young mother Tash is reveling in her newfound friend group of glamorous, high-status moms in a neighborhood she can only dream of living in until she begins to suspect that these moms

might be involved in some way with the deaths of multiple young women in the area. This mystery deals with issues of class as well as the anxieties of motherhood. In “Welcome Home, Stranger,” Kate Christensen examines the difficulties of going back to a home you had turned your back on and dealing with long buried or unresolved family history and trauma. This novel follows Rachel, a middle-aged woman who reluctantly returns from Washington, D.C., to her working-class New England roots to sort out her deceased mother’s estate. The move means confronting a tangled web of family and their issues, all of which she thought she had left behind long ago. Reviewers and fellow novelists agree this is a great homecoming story. Mystery novelist Paige Shelton writes several different series, and while several of these are “cozies,” her “Alaska Wild” series takes

a slightly darker tone. In “Lost Hours,” protagonist Beth Rivers finds herself recovering from the trauma of being kidnapped, only to encounter a woman who claims to have suffered the same fate. Rivers cannot ignore this woman’s claims and pursuing them leads her into a bigger mystery than she expects. Enjoy your holidays — and if you need some downtime from all the holiday activities, stop by your local library to get an engrossing read to lose yourself in. Visit pwcva.gov/library to place an online hold for any of the titles mentioned above. Kirk Johnson is a manager in the Prince William Public Libraries’ Material Services Division. Patriot’s game gets a huge boost

Arrival of Barbour propels Pioneers’ dreams of first state boys basketball crown By Matthew Proctor Times Staff Writer

Two years ago, the Patriot High boys basketball squad reached the Class 6 state semifinals for the first time. Last year, they reached the state final, falling to Hayfield. The next step in that progression is to win it all. Returning two starters, their entire bench and welcoming in Harvard-bound Osbourn High transfer Teyvien Barbour, the Pioneers are ready to navigate a path to glory over the upcoming months. Coach Sherman Rivers’ team is big, athletic, experienced and hungry. “We definitely have the ability to do so, but we got to figure out that it’s going to be a battle every day to get better to get there. There are a lot of good teams,” Rivers said. Taking over a program that had won 14 games in the three years before he arrived, the eighth-year coach has turned the Pioneers into a perennial powerhouse. Patriot sports a 135-38 record under Rivers and has won six consecutive Cedar Run District titles and three of the last five Class 6 Region B titles. “Sometimes I have to pinch myself, thinking about where we started at,” Rivers said. “I really love the way the program is going. Our biggest thing is player development. When guys get their chance, they’re ready to go. Guys graduate and that’s the only way you can sustain success. The guys are ready to take over when it’s their chance.” The Pioneers lost all-state point guard Nasir Coleman, all-region forward Jay Randall and sharpshooting guard Kaden Bates – signature players who led them to great heights. There is ample talent back in returning starters Dezmond Hopkins and Isaiah Vick, as well as senior Makhi Dillard and sophomore Kai Wilcox, who were two of the Pioneers’ top options off the bench last season. The addition of Barbour could be what pushes Patriot over the top. A prolific scorer who averaged 24.6 points per

We’re hoping to get that state championship,” the senior said. At 6-foot-5, Barbour is the complete package with size and strength to score inside, touch to score on the perimeter and the athleticism to defend anywhere on the court. “Tey brings all the intangibles,” Rivers said. “He

doesn’t have to average 24 for us. Whenever he scores that much, we’ll take it, but he’s got a lot of guys around him that can score the basketball, so he’s able to pick his spots a little bit more.” Barbour, who had 23 points and nine rebounds in a big win over South Lakes

on Tuesday, is happy to do whatever it takes to win. “We have lot of players who score the ball, a lot of players who can do a lot of things, so my goal is to get the ball in the playmakers’ hands and make plays when needed,” Barbour said. “If

Left: Backup point guard Carter Crumity leads one of the deepest benches Patriot has ever assembled. Right: Entering his eighth season, head coach Sherman Rivers has led the Pioneers to six consecutive Cedar Run District titles.

Pioneers plan deep playoff run PATRIOT, from page 10 Of his skills, Barbour says, “I feel like I’m a great scorer, I feel like I’m a great rebounder, offensive and defensive, and I feel like my overall defense off-ball and onball has grown a lot.” Patriot’s other top scoring options are seniors Hopkins and Vick. Hopkins has led the Pioneers in scoring each of the past two seasons and takes over as the starting point guard while Vick, a 6-foot-7 forward, has a rare combination of size and athleticism that few teams can handle. “(Hopkins) has been doing a great job of running the team and still being able to be aggressive, be the scorer that he naturally is,” Rivers said. “Isaiah has become more of a force for us. His versatility and things he’s able to do on both ends, he can score inside, he can play outside, he can handle the ball, he can guard one through five,” Rivers added. “He rebounds the basketball, he defends the rim, he talks. He’s running the stuff out there defensively, making sure we’re where we’re supposed to be.” A new addition to the starting lineup, Dillard is a physical forward that specializes in shutting down elite scorers while Wilcox is a deadeye 3-point shooter. “When he misses, I’m actually shocked,” said Rivers.

Challenging schedule

In preparation for another deep postseason run, the Pioneers will play one of the toughest schedules they’ve ever played, including Class 6 champion Hayfield, Class 5 champion Woodside and Maryland private schools Grace Brethren Christian and Riverdale Baptist.

“We don’t want to get bored with the details. When you’re winning by large margins, it’s hard to keep their focus, especially when they know that they’re probably going to be the favorite most nights. That’s why we’re playing the non-conference schedule that we’re playing, just so we can do that,” Rivers said. “It’s great playing that good competition in the regular season because when we come out on top, we know what we do well. If we lose, we know what we got to improve on. Come playoff time that’s what really matters every single play,” Barbour added. Despite falling to Woodside 5946 in the season opener on Dec. 2 and Grace Brethren Christian 5958 on Dec. 16, Patriot picked up a statement win on Tuesday, defeating Class 6 semifinalist South Lakes 8372 to improve to 5-2. Rivers believes the experience the Pioneers have gained from playing in high-stakes games in the playoffs and other elite programs will pay off. “Playing in big games, playing in hostile environments, on the road, neutral site, they’ve seen it all at this point. So, the best thing we can do is try to keep putting them in those situations so when the opportunity presents itself, they don’t feel nervous,” said Rivers. Patriot’s success has fueled expectations, Rivers admits. “They’re coming in with a chip on their shoulder, trying to prove that they’re the ones that everybody should be talking about, so it’s just realizing that every day is a chance to get better because your end goal is to be the last team that’s happy at the end of the season. Only one that’s happy is the one that wins their last game,” Rivers added.

When it comes to getting into houses without chimneys, Santa has many tricks up his long, red velvet sleeves. COURTESY

No chimney, no problem!

Magic keys, cloaks, teleportation help Santa deliver on Christmas Eve By Christy Shultzaberger Century 21 New Millennium

I received a letter from a little girl worried about how Santa Claus would enter her home because her home did not have a chimney. She wants to know how Santa will get into her house and others. The first report of Santa coming down the chimney to deliver gifts was in an early 1800s book by Washington Irving. Irving wrote, “St. Nicholas is seen riding jollily among the treetops or over the roofs of houses, now and

then drawing forth magnificent presents from his breeches pockets and dropping them down the chimneys of his favorites.” And sometimes, Santa himself “rattles down the chimneys” to deliver the gifts. In a poem by Clement Clarke Moore, “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” St. Nicholas (Santa) comes down the chimney with a bound and magically rises up the chimney to leave. I don’t know about you, but I don’t think Santa could possibly keep all the presents in his pockets, and he

definitely has a sleigh and reindeer. But as for going down the chimney — that is an excellent question! I thought about Santa delivering gifts to good little girls and boys over the years and how much houses have changed. In places where the weather gets cold in the winter, the houses have chimneys. But modern homes and those in places where the weather is warmer no longer need them. So how does Santa get into the house? This question has led to many stories over the years. Some parents say they have a magical key they leave for Santa to use to get in the front door. I have heard stories from managers of apartment buildings who have a special key they leave for Santa when he arrives so he can enter all the apartments to leave presents for all the good girls and boys. I understand these keys are only magical on Christmas Eve and will only open the door for Santa — they won’t work for anyone else! Another story I’ve heard is that Santa can use a transporter device, or teleportation (think of Star Trek). He magically teleports inside homes with his large bag of gifts. That would be an interesting sight to see Santa appearing out of thin air! Another idea is he has an invisibility cloak, much like Harry Potter, and can follow someone inside and wait until

the coast is clear to leave the presents. I doubt this one is likely; it may take a long time for the room to clear, and we know Santa has too many houses to visit to be held up at one house, waiting for everyone to go to bed! One little boy was told Santa came through the bathroom fan vent. I am not sure how that would work, but it would certainly be entertaining to see! Many other children believe Santa uses his magic to create a chimney for their house just for Christmas Eve, and as soon as Santa is done, the chimney vanishes! How does Santa enter a house without a chimney? We may never know. Santa keeps most of his magic to himself; even his elves don’t know. You could ask the reindeer, but if you don’t speak their language, it won’t do you any good. What I do know is that Santa loves his work. He loves spreading joy and love throughout the world. He hopes all girls and boys are as kind to others as he is to them. Have a Merry Christmas!
