Editor’s Letter - SHE! makes it happen The first person I called when I found out we’d scored an interview with mega motion picture producer Deborah Del Prete (see page 13) was SHE! fashion director Sandra Packwood. I was over the moon with excitement but also a bit unsure how to proceed with this gem of an opportunity. “Are you kidding?” she responded. “We create an entire issue around it, tie it to the Academy Awards and encourage women to throw Oscar parties and get glammed up like movie stars. It’ll be the perfect anti-depressant for the winter blues!” Duh. Why didn’t I think of that? There are plenty of things I don’t think of, that I don’t even have to think of, because Sandra does. From the first issue of SHE! to the one in your hands, Sandra has styled, directed and written almost every fashion feature. She comes up with the theme, finds the location, selects the models, pulls the clothes and accessories, and coordinates the hair, makeup and photography. SHE TIME | Mind. Body. Soul. Movie stars need to eat right and exercise every day. Their lives depend on it. Guess what? So does yours. By Debbie Abbott

Movie stars are lucky, their passion for acting drives a strong motivation to eat clean and exercise. Sadly for many of us, we’ve let food and alcohol become our passion. 70% of us are overweight, and more than 30% of us are obese. Our poor kids are on the same path, with experts projecting no slow down in the rising numbers. What to do when you’ve developed habits and patterns that keep your body in a state you don’t like? DITCH THE DIET MENTALITY Dieters always have “good days” or “bad days.” I know that for two reasons; one, I was a dieter for decades, and two, I work in the fitness and nutrition industry. This is what I hear all the time: “I was so bad on vacation/last week/ last weekend/ 10

yesterday. Now I’m dieting and working out every day!” What an awful way to live. It’s defeatist. It makes us crazy. And it doesn’t work. Dieters are all about calorie in vs. calorie out, yet our bodies don’t function this way. Our bodies are chemistry sets, not math equations, and women’s bodies actually want to hold on to fat. Why? Fat makes hormones, it comprises 60% of our brain, makes glands, organs, and bones, and even helps build our immune system. Our bodies are smart. It’s our dieting mentality that’s stupid. EMBRACE THE EAT REAL FOOD MENTALITY If it comes dried and hardened in a bag or a package, don’t eat it. If it comes from a fast food restaurant, don’t eat it. If it’s made with flour, sugar, and crappy fats, contains preservatives,

food dyes, and chemicals you can’t pronounce? Don’t eat it! 1) Give up grains and sugar Grab your stomach, can you pinch anything? You could lose that if you ditch simple carbs – think bread, pasta, crackers, and dessert. You’ll also lose or reduce headaches, skin issues, diabetes, bloat, foggy thinking, bad sleep, and inflammation. 2) Learn to cook True, cooking is time consuming and takes skill. So schedule the time and develop the skill. Practice making real whole food a normal part of your life and stop making excuses – lots of busy people cook. While you’re at it, teach your kids to cook, too. 3) Clear out the crap Junk in the cabinets calls out with a very loud voice that’s

hard to ignore, so toss it. Throw the processed junk foods in the trash and restock your fridge and pantry with real whole food. What should be on your shopping list? Lean meats, healthy fats, a ton of vegetables, fruit, some nuts and seeds, and good dairy. 4) Believe in something different than dieting To make real, lasting change, you need to fill your head with new approaches and facts from experts in the field. Engagement is the key.” Understanding the power of social media has been critical for Angie, who genuinely connects with her followers daily. Her fans relate to her because she shares her life so honestly. It’s easy to forget that this woman who makes her schedule look effortless wakes up at 2 a.m. on weekdays, has a weekend show as well, and still manages to be a devoted wife and mother who asks her children every night what they’re thankful for (she says, smiling, that “the answer usually involves chocolate”). In addition to family, Angie is a passionate patriot and deeply appreciative of the sacrifices

military families make. She loves covering military issues, defense, international affairs, and veterans. Through it all, Angie has managed to remain remarkably humble. She explains that she is most fulfilled when someone says she has “changed their life, motivated them, touched them – that’s the biggest compliment. That’s the goal.” Yet she plays down what she has accomplished, saying that she “doesn’t wake up feeling successful, feeling like I’m going to kill this day!” She sees humor in the thought of her own celebrity. In fact, she readily admits that she “doesn’t find herself interesting.” Her fans would most definitely disagree. Some years ago, an endlessly energetic girl grew up in a family that included a father who was a film editor in New York City and a grandmother who made beaded gowns for Mae West. She read prodigiously, went to plays, watched television, devoured movies, and gravitated towards all methods of storytelling. Then one day, she saw 2001: A Space Odyssey, and was fascinated. The movie became what she refers to as her “seminal film,” spurring her to delve deeply into what goes on behind the scenes of moviemaking. Not too many years later, Deborah Del Prete would go on to produce Ender’s Game, Green Street Hooligans, and the mega-successful The Wedding Planner. SHE! was fortunate enough to have a few moments of Deborah’s time, and we jumped at the chance to share her remarkable story of making it to the top. Navigating the nuances of Hollywood is hard for anyone. It’s exceptionally difficult, however, for women. Deborah admits that the odds against success are great because women simply don’t get the “leg-ups” that men do. She does lament the tendency for “retreads” (think big-budget sequels) to rule the day and points to the lure of pre-marketing as the culprit. God, girls, and guns Meet writer and producer Nina May By Maddison Hicks Nina May’s sales-pitch for her ‘faith-based, post-apocalyptic drama’ resonated dissonantly with me during our first meeting last year. My initial discomfort at what felt like an appeal to the conservative man’s gaze temporarily subsided as Nina continued on to discuss her desire to nurture female talent in a safe environment through her projects with Renaissance Women Productions; and while that catchy little slogan echoed strangely in my chest, this new acquaintance tried to find ways to welcome me into her world. Because SHE! editor Susan McCorkindale introduced me as a writer and musician, Nina May began formulating ideas for incorporating me into her production. Months passed, but that slogan kept flipping around in my head like a fish out of water. “If you like God, girls, and guns...” The

phrase conjured this image of a woman in skin-tight jeans and a low-cut shirt, a pair of sky-high heels, an all-American bleach job, a Bible resting against a hip conveniently pushed out to one side to exaggerate her curves, and a glossy black assault rifle contrasting against her tanned

“If you like God, girls, and guns, you’ll love Daily Bread.” skin - all in front of a rippling American flag. Thus when I began researching the Daily Bread series, I was hopeful for anything that would dismiss this unwelcomed stereotyped woman of my preconception. The seven female leads of Daily Bread do wear skin-tight pants, pose in high heels, and carry weapons in most of the promotional images, but in stills from the film, the women are in combat boots with their hair pulled back, ready to get to work rebuilding civilization. The narrating character is a blonde white woman, but the gorgeous ensemble cast boasts women of color playing primary characters with developed back-stories. The trailer does prominently feature the Lord’s Prayer, but not in an obvious commercial exploit of religion;

it feels more like an anchoring meditation of gratitude in a tumultuous drama. As I watched Daily Bread’s On Set series on YouTube, I found myself shifting away from skepticism and toward optimism. In the videos, Skip Lipman interviews Nina May in her home (which doubles as the set for the series) along with several members of the cast. May comes across as a woman of depth, creativity, strength, and contemplation, a queen of sorts reigning over her enormous home and 130+ acre farm in Northern Virginia. The series explores some pretty heavy topics. The primary theme is the concept of ‘surviving or thriving.’ In the natural world, animals exist to survive. In the civilized world, humans have developed beyond pursuing mere survival; we thrive through the processes of creation and education, social interaction and communal organization. May laments that the modern addiction to screens and devices seems to have stolen these joys from life. In Daily Bread, May plays a scarily plausible game of ‘whatif’ by pulling the plug on all that technology. A solar flare renders inoperable electricity and all of its dependent devices. “It’s like God flipping a light switch,” says May. Suddenly all the technology our society depends

upon is gone. Would we use the crisis as a fresh start and rebuild a better civilization? Or would we devolve into an animalistic survival mode? The women of Daily Bread face this scenario in two factions: the ‘foodies’ and the ‘gunnies.’ The foodies prioritize sustenance, not just of the body, but of the mind, heart, and soul; these women want to salvage the remnants of civilized humanity through comforts. The gunnies prioritize protection and survival; without survival, what is the point of sustenance and civilized comforts? Introducing talented tween filmmaker Celia Cooley, winner of the British Council’s Shakespeare Lives Short Film Competition By Katie Yeager Meet Celia Cooley who, at the ripe old age of 12, won the Shakespeare Shorts film competition. I don’t know about you, but I quake at the thought of Shakespeare. What are they saying? What does that mean? Eek! Not Celia. “There are two things I really like about Shakespeare’s writing,” Celia told me. “First, I like the language he uses and how you can read his writing like a poem. And second, I like his comedies. He’s a serious writer, but he can make fun of himself. For example, in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, he makes fun of Romeo and Juliet by using a play inside of a play. That’s part of what inspired me to make my film, Oh Romeo.” Celia took some time to talk

with me about “Oh Romeo,” filmmaking, blogging, and the whirlwind trip to London she won. Katie: At the time you won the competition you were 12. That’s young to be a Shakespeare fan. How’d that happen? Celia: When I was seven and part of a performing arts group in Winchester, we did a parody of Macbeth. Three years later I played Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at a Shakespeare summer camp. I thought the play was going to be hard to understand and the dialogue hard to memorize, but I surprised myself and I realized that even though Shakespeare’s plays are challenging, they still can be fun.

Celia: It’s an online contest open to filmmakers of any age, from any part of the world. Entrants are invited to create short films that are inspired by, or reinterpret, Shakespeare’s works. Katie: And you were inspired by Romeo and Juliet. Celia: Yes! I entered my short film, Oh Romeo, which starred my cat, Firepaw, as Romeo, and my dad as the cameraman. Katie: Were you blogging about filmmaking prior to winning? Celia: No. When we got the email saying I’d won, it included a list of questions and requests, one of which was that we document our experience in London. I chose a blog so people could follow our adventures and because we’d always have it as a reminder of all the wonderful things we did on our trip.

Katie: So, tell me about the grand prize. Celia: It was an amazing, all expenses paid trip to London that included a screening of my film at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, filmmaking equipment, and the chance to meet incredible people like director Simon Hunter and the executive producer of Downton Abbey, Gareth Neame. At the end of our meeting he gave me a book signed by the entire cast of Downton Abbey, including Dame Maggie Smith, who is a personal favorite of mine, and said, “I better not see this on eBay.” I assured him he never would! Katie: Describe the filmmaking workshop you attended. Celia: On the second and third days of my trip, I attended a filmmaking workshop with director Simon Hunter. The workshop covered every aspect of making a feature film on a low budget – from how to work

with available locations, to using a minimum of equipment and crew. It was great. Katie: It must have been pretty cool having your film screened at the ICA. Celia: It was! We went with Cortina Butler and Thomas Kell of the British Council, and Sir Ciaran Devane, who’s the director (pretty cool meeting a “sir”). Not only was my film screened, but I was awarded a plaque from actress, writer, and director Nat Luurtsema, and I got to give an acceptance speech! After the ceremony, there was a party and I got to talk to Nat some more. She was inspiring, had a lot of funny stories, and talked about the challenges of being a woman in the entertainment business. Katie: How has winning the contest inspired you? Celia: It’s inspired me to keep acting and making movies of my own. I’d like to do documen-

Dances with Wolfe: The Woman Behind the Manassas Ballet Theatre By Caitlin Scott Photos Courtesy Manassas Ballet Theatre A woman of discipline, passion, and drive, Manassas Ballet Theatre director Amy Wolfe is always working to raise the bar for a steadily growing, increasingly delighted audience. A dancer herself, Amy has performed as a soloist with a long list of ballet companies, including the Dallas Metropolitan Ballet, Ballet Midland, Irving Ballet, and Richardson Ballet. Her credentials aside, Amy’s passion for dance led to the genesis of the largest professional ballet company in Northern Virginia. The Manassas Ballet Theatre includes an affiliated school, a live orchestra, a costume mistress, and 29 full-time dancers, nine of them male. In the ballet world, this ratio indicates a particular level of prestige. “Most American companies have a hard time finding really good male dancers,” she says. Amy’s Manassas Ballet Theatre was born out of the Manassas School of Dance, which was run by Leslee Gearhart when Amy

applied there for dance teaching position in 1990. Then a new mother, she toted her four-year-old son Colin and newborn daughter Cece with her to her interview. Soon after Amy was hired to teach, she was also invited to dance with the Manassas Dance Company, the performing branch of the school that mixed professional dancers with its students. Even though she was teaching and dancing nearly every day, she had energy to burn. Since there weren’t professional classes for adults available locally, she sought out opportunities to study in Washington and Maryland — classes she squeezed in at dawn each day so she could come back to Manassas and teach. In the evenings, she performed with the Manassas Dance Company. Her life was “intense,” as she describes it, but that’s exactly how she liked it. Her driving schedule led to an idea that was born in 1997, when Amy learned about the renovations intended to revive the weary silhouette of Old Town Manassas. “I read in the Washington Post that Lloyd and Lou Harris were planning to open shops, art Continued on Page 26

galleries, restaurants, and apartments,” she says. “I thought, ‘Ahha! It’s time to open our own professional ballet company.’” The fact that she had no experience fundraising or running a ballet company didn’t deter Amy. She requested meetings with local philanthropists to share her vision, and figured out the world of fundraising as she went along. A network of relationships blossomed, and between donations and a small inheritance, Amy was able to purchase the Manassas School of Dance from Geargart in 1999. By 2001, she was hiring full-time professional dancers to perform Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and even original ballets. The most notable of these is Colin: Son, Marine, Hero, which will enter its third season next Memorial Day. This full-length ballet was composed, choreographed, and performed in honor of her son, who, spurred by the events of 9/11, joined the Marines right out of high school. Colin was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq in 2006, setting off a ripple effect of pain that touched not only his family and friends, but the young men who fought by his side. Audience members who watch Colin’s four-act ballet learn a great deal about the talent behind the Manassas Ballet Theatre. They also learn a lot about Amy. Her vulnerability and broken heart are on vivid display, as are her unimaginable strength and the fact that she did not stand in the way of her child’s desire to defend his country with grace and honor. Contrary to the conclusion most of us would draw, though, the ballet was not created for Amy or even for Colin. After his death, Amy met some of the young men he served with and saw their pain—the pain from the horrors they witnessed, the pain from the guilt they felt for surviving when their friends didn’t. “Colin became a Marine because he was passionate about making the world a better place,” says Amy. “I created the ballet because I wanted those boys to know they should take his loss as a

reason to make the most of their time in the world and to carry on his mission. I want them to understand that they were saved for a reason. Spray with nonstick cooking spray. • Chop bacon into small pieces. • Place the bacon, popcorn, and chopped pecans into a large bowl and toss. • In a small saucepan, combine brown sugar, butter, and corn syrup. Stir over medium heat. Once melted, stop stirring and insert a candy thermometer. • Cook three to four minutes, or until candy thermometer hits 238º. • Remove pan from heat, add baking soda, and stir vigorously. The sugar mixture will foam up, so be careful. • Pour the foamy sugar over the popcorn mixture and quickly stir everything together, making sure the popcorn, nuts, and bacon are coated with caramel. • Spread the popcorn out on the baking sheet. Bake for about 45 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes to distribute the caramel. • Once popcorn is golden brown and crunchy, remove from oven and allow to cool completely.

Ingredients 1 oz Maraschino cherry juice 2 oz cranberry juice 1 1/2 oz cherry vodka 1/2 oz lemon juice 2-3 oz lemon flavored sparkling soda or seltzer Dash of Grenadine syrup Optional/garnish: Maraschino cherries Gold paper straws “Hollywood” gold foil/sparkle craft stickers attached to straws for a red carpet presentation Directions 1. In a cocktail shaker, combine cherry vodka, cranberry juice, Maraschino cherry juice, lemon juice, a dash of grenadine syrup and ice cubes. 2. Shake and strain into a red carpet worthy glass. 3. Top off with sparkling soda/ seltzer and garnish with maraschino cherry.
