Get into the game with sports camps By Delia Engstrom Contributing Writer
Summer camps are an opportunity for kids to improve athletic skills in their favorite sport or try out a variety of options to find the perfect fit. According to LeagueNetwork.com, involvement in sports offers more than just physical benefits. Participating in a sport also: • Develops self-esteem: A high-five, pat on the back, thumbs up, or even a nod of approval – these are simple gestures that can help build confidence in kids. You’ll often see these signals come from teammates and coaches when they want to recognize someone for a job well done. Kids also develop self-confidence the more they learn about themselves and their abilities. • Provides regular exercise: When kids play sports, they probably don’t even realize how much healthier
they are becoming. They are building stamina and endurance. Their hearts are getting healthier thanks to all the aerobic activity, and they’re maintaining a healthy body weight, which will help them ward off diseases associated with obesity. • Teaches time management: Youth athletes have been observed to be better students. Through sports, kids learn about time management and discipline. Tyler Kennedy Hockey Camp: Ages 10-15, June 22-26. Haymarket Iceplex presents former NHL player and Stanley Cup Champion Tyler Kennedy. Campers will be taught complete skill development in an up-beat and repetitive environment for understanding and mastery. Skating, stick-handling, edge work, puck control and more will be covered. Visit haymarketiceplex. com for more information on all of the summer camps they are offering.

Avoid summer ‘brain-drain’ with STEM camps By Delia Engstrom Contributing Writer
Camps that focus on science, technology, engineering and math, the STEM subjects, offer campers—and parents—an opportunity to slow the “brain drain” that occurs for kids each summer. Students potentially lose the academic progress they’ve gained over the previous school year, and it can take weeks to get back on track once school begins again in the fall. Students involved in “hands-on, minds-on” STEM summer camps usually have so much fun, they forget they are also learning valuable skills. The skills gained at STEM-based camps may prepare them for a future in science, technology, engineering or math pursuits.
STEM jobs will see a 13 percent increase between now and 2027. The greater Washington D.C. area is a thriving hub of all things science and technology related, which translates into a wide variety of camp options as well. Health care Career Exploration Camp: Ages 14-18, June 22-25, half-day. Students will learn various skills they’d encounter in the medical field. This camp is offered by Lord Fairfax Community College Workforce Solutions. Campers will take a hands-on approach to medical assisting, phlebotomy, medical front office administration and pharmacy technician skills. Register for this and other
camps at lfccworkforce.com Code Ninjas Summer Camps: Ages 7-14, all summer, half- and fullday. At the Gainesville location, campers can experience Roblox Royale, Code Drones, Minecraft Modding and many STEM-based options all summer long. Enroll at codeninjas.com NOVA SySTEMic: Grades 3-12, various dates and locations. Led by STEM teachers and college students enrolled in STEM programs. Camps focus on hands-on, projectbased learning that provides stu-
dents with excellent opportunities to begin exploring STEM fields and to chart a course for future STEM education and workforce opportunities. Topics include cybersecurity, rocketry, robotics and more. Get out! Camps to help kids explore the great outdoors
The amount of time kids spend outdoors, whether in creative play or educational pursuits, has dropped drastically in the last decade. The average American child is now spending more than seven hours a day in front of an electronic device, according to research from Common Sense Media. Experts agree less screen time and more “green” time can combat a variety of potential health issues, such as obesity, heart disease and vitamin deficiencies. Luckily, Virginia is home to some beautiful outdoor spaces where kids can enjoy spending time outside. Bull Run Mountains Conservancy, Inc. is an independent, nonprofit in Broad Run, about 15 minutes west of Manassas, that protects and promotes the Bull Run Mountains through edu-
cation, research, and stewardship. As part of its mission, BRMC offers the following summer camps: • Budding Naturalist Camp: Ages 4-6, July 13-17, half-day. Campers are exposed to the outdoors and wildlife as they explore the Bull Run Mountains. Discovery hikes, frog and salamander searches, stream exploration and nature crafts. • Summer Naturalist Camp: Ages 7-12, July 20-24 and July 27-31, full-day. Special camps for kids with special needs By Delia Engstrom Contributing Writer
Summer camps for special needs children can broaden their worldview by exposing them to other children, animals, sports and activities. In fact, many times these summer camps can also expose kids without special needs to special needs children, expanding their worldview, too. Here are some of the benefits of summer camps for special needs children:
Social skills
Camps offer a great opportunity
for special needs children to expand their social skills. While camps can provide a comparable social structure to the school setting, it’s often more fun and engaging for kids to be at camp than in school. Shy children might be so engaged that they come out of their shells. Kids who have a hard time making friends may bond with kids with similar disabilities. In addition, many camps for special needs kids have support staff specifically trained to help them get out of their comfort zones and try new activities.
Physical fitness
All kids benefit emotionally and physically when they’re outdoors and running around. But special needs kids can’t always take part in sports teams or gym class, which is why summer camps can be so enriching for them. Many camps provide specific accommodations and activities that allow them to be more physical. Nature camps allow children to get their bodies moving by gathering leaves, taking walks and climbing trees. This is a big plus for children from urban areas who wouldn’t otherwise get that kind of outdoor experi-
ence. In any of these camps, kids are experiencing the health benefits and good feelings associated with moving their bodies and being outdoors. If children attend the same camps every summer, they get to see how much they’ve progressed. Summer camps offer special needs kids many of the opportunities they offer any child: The opportunity to sing songs around a campfire, learn teamwork, enjoy nature and most of all, make new friends. Such experiences boost kids’ confidence and create happy memories that will stay with them throughout their lives.
Inclusion-based programs
Often the local parks and recreation programs have inclusion based activities where an effort is made to mainstream children with special needs. Several participation skills are examined in advance to determine if a program is suitable. Please contact the Parks and Rec departments in your area for further info about their inclusion programming. Additional summer camp options for those with special needs include: Camp Easterseals UCP: Ages 8 and up, May 31 - Aug. 8, various
weeks, programs, overnight. Camp Easterseals UCP has provided quality recreational and therapeutic camp programming for over 60 years for children and adults with special needs. More than 500 individuals attend their residential camps every year. Camp Easterseals UCP is a fully accessible camp facility to accommodate campers with a wide range of special needs. Participants spend three to 26 days away from their normal caregivers and lives. While assistance is available through trained staff, independence is encouraged with new activities in a unique and supportive atmosphere. In 2020, they will offer six- and 12-day long options of Good Times Retreat, Freedom Retreat, Independence Camp, Camp Can Do, Super Summer Camp, in addition to Family Week, which is designed for families with a loved one that has a disability or special need. Swimming, sailing, paddling: So many ways to beat the heat By Delia Engstrom Contributing Writer
State-of-the-art indoor aquatic facilities and outdoor pools offer countless summer swim programs for kids of all ages and abilities. Learning to swim is fun and also provides added health benefits, such as healthy heart and lungs, increased stamina and improved balance and flexibility. According to the National Safety Council, drownings are the second leading cause of preventable death in children under the age of 15, so participation in swim lessons -- either during the summer or year-round -is both a rewarding and safety-conscious choice.
Check with the parks and recreation departments in both Fauquier (fauquiercounty.gov) and Prince William County (pwcgov.org) to find a suitable location for swim lessons. Fun, fitness and safety are not the only reasons children should learn to swim. Learning to swim also opens the door to a range of other activities that may require some basic swimming skills, such as rowing and sailing.
