NANTUCKET GARDEN FESTIVAL THE NINTH ANNUAL NANTUCKET GARDEN FESTIVAL NANTUCKET LIGHTHOUSE SCHOOL'S MAJOR SUMMER FUNDRAISER
An independent day school serving 100 children in preschool through eighth grade, Nantucket Lighthouse School honors the spirit of childhood through a developmentally appropriate curriculum that emphasizes critical thinking, creative problem solving and social responsibility. Connecting children with the natural world and allowing them to explore the outdoors, including the school’s Educational Garden and Greenhouse, is an integral part of Nantucket Lighthouse School’s dynamic, project-based curriculum. The Nantucket Garden Festival is an intentional and natural extension of the school. Students work in Nantucket Lighthouse School’s Educational Garden and Greenhouse weeding, watering and tending to the beds. Classes utilize the space for lessons in science, social studies, math, reading, writing, and art (painting, weaving and botanical printmaking). In their living laboratory, children are growing, experimenting, observing, measuring, comparing, and learning to care for something that is important to the Nantucket Lighthouse School community and to sustainability efforts around the globe. Thank you for supporting the Nantucket Garden Festival and helping cultivate Nantucket’s future leaders.

WO R KS H O P S Gardening for Pollinators T UESDAY, J ULY 1 8 | 9- 11A M | $85 | 6 2 S O U T H SH O R E R OA D
Experience the living landscape at a tucked away Nantucket home to learn about planting and maintaining your own successful pollinator garden. From garden design and choosing proper native plants to keeping bees and attracting birds, butterflies and other insects, experts Rita Higgins (landscape design) and Emily Molden of the Nantucket Land Council (monarchs and other pollinators) will teach you how to create and maintain a sustainable, edible oasis. As the finale, participants will learn how to harvest honey, all while enjoying a sampling of local honey from island beekeepers. About the gardens at 62 South Shore Road: The homeowner’s main goal was to create a sustainable and edible landscape that was organic, conserved water, and provided an inviting habitat for pollinators and birds. With the help of landscape designer Rita Higgins, this became a shared vision. Rita introduced her design talents with the creation of a Hugelkulter pollinator garden in an artistic serpentine form. Filled with native flowering plants and herbs, the garden was intended to be colorful and beautiful and also attract a variety of pollinators. The Hugelkultur raised bed method provided such a fertile environment for growth that the plants, all planted as plugs in June, developed into a well established and dense garden by summer’s end that was teeming with pollinating insects.

E VE NT B IOS AMY PALLENBERG Amy Pallenberg, owner of Amy Pallenberg Garden Design & Care, is a curator of beautiful spaces. She transforms the ordinary into verdant, high design, inspired spaces that are direct reflections of her customers’ style and desire. Design and cultivation of gardens, containers and interior floral arrangements are her specialty. MEGAN SOVERINO Megan Soverino has been developing her knowledge for gardens and floral design for the past ten years while learning from a few of Nantucket's top master gardeners. Megan finds her inspiration in the natural movement of field grown flowers that take on various shapes as they grow with the elements of wind and sun. Isle de Flores, the island where Megan's ancestors came from, is the name of her small company she began two years ago which specializes in container gardening, window box design and installation as well as cut flowers for small events, local businesses and weddings. When she is not busy in the gardens during high season, you will find Megan traveling to distant places to continue her education in floral design with some of Instagram's biggest names including Sarah Ryhanen of Saipua, Katie Davis of Ponderosa and Thyme and Ariella Chezar. BEE SHAY Bee Shay, a published author and island resident, specializes in the art of printing with nature. Although she has been known to practice “gyotaku” (the art of fish printing), her first passion is printing with botanicals. She uses these prints to make functional art as she believes that bringing beauty into everyday life is an essential way to live. She is currently serving as Executive Board President to an international group of printmakers. She has been a practicing artist and instructor since 1978. JULIE WOOD Julie has made landscaping her career focus since 1995. After apprenticing for a landscape designer, she returned to Nantucket and was hired as a head gardener for Nantucket Island Resorts where she managed the greenhouse operation as well as designing and maintaining gardens for all NIR properties. Hither Creek Gardener was born in 2002, from Julie’s desire to work independently and in a manner consistent with her core values. “Cultivate beautiful spaces, but do no harm” is her working mantra. Julie completed the accredited NOFA organic Land Care program and is passionate about organic landscaping. page 19
