KEYNOTE LECTURE
Nothing is Impossible Keynote Address by Eliot Coleman $75./After June 30 $100. ∙ NANTUCKET LIGHTHOUSE SCHOOL Tuesday, July 16 ∙ 9:00AM-11:00AM Eliot Coleman, acclaimed organic farming expert, helped start the organic food movement with “The New Organic Grower” published over 30 years ago. He continues to lead the way, pushing the limits of the traditional harvest season. Following an introduction by Russell Morash of The Victory Garden and This Old House fame, in his keynote address, Coleman will make the case for why organic farming and gardening matters and how it has changed from the ‘70s to today. A passionate advocate for the revival of small-scale sustainable farming, Coleman will provide a practical model for supplying fresh, locally grown produce during the winter season, even in climates where conventional wisdom says it can't be done. Lastly, he will share how novice, small-scale backyard growers can begin to become more sustainable and less dependent on grocery stores. The talk will end with a book signing and a unique opportunity to ask Eliot your gardening questions. Lecture underwriter Johnny’s Selected Seeds will have their Tools Manager, Adam Lemieux, on hand to show you a selection of tools designed by Eliot Coleman, and all lecture participants will leave with a special coupon for Johnny’s online store. Please find Eliots’s bio on page 18.

Can a cut flower present an opportunity to consider a heightened expression of what one wants to achieve in a border? Join Taylor and Ed as they share years of observation, experimentation and inquiry into the idea of the cutting garden. Please find Taylor’s and Ed’s bios on page 19.
Fifteen Heirloom Varieties, Their Stories and Why they Belong in Your Garden with Lee Buttala $50./After June 30 $75. ∙ NANTUCKET LIGHTHOUSE SCHOOL Tuesday, July 16 ∙ 2:00PM-3:00PM The former director of Seed Savers Exchange and co-editor of The Seed Garden shares the stories of some of his favorite heirloom varieties and makes the case for why we should still be growing these time-honored vegetables and flowers in our gardens today. Recounting the tales of these varieties, many of which were headed for extinction before dedicated gardeners, seed savers, and farmers created a movement to rescue them, Buttala shares ideas for creating a diverse garden that ensures the security of our food supply, while providing us with great tasting produce and beautiful plants that can inhabit our gardens for generations to come. ELIOT COLEMAN has more than 50 years’ experience in all aspects of organic farming, including field vegetables, greenhouse vegetables, rotational grazing of cattle and sheep, and range poultry. During his careers as a commercial market gardener, the director of agricultural research projects, and as a teacher and lecturer on organic gardening, he studied, practiced and perfected his craft. Eliot has written extensively on the subject of organic agriculture since 1975, including chapters in scientific books and the foreword to Keeping Food Fresh: Old World Techniques and Recipes by the gardeners and farmers of Terre Vivant. He is the author of The New Organic Grower, Four Season Harvest, and The Winter Harvest Handbook. He has conducted study tours of organic farms, market gardens, orchards and vineyards in Europe and has successfully combined European ideas with his own to develop and popularize a complete system of tools and equipment for organic vegetable growers. LINDSAY CURRY’S first gardening jobs were the seemingly endless chores assigned by her parents at their homes. Her dad’s passion is growing his own food, while her mom’s focus is flowers. Lindsay was a Nantucket summer kid who settled here after college, starting her gardening career with Amy Pallenberg then moving out on her own to establish Mohr Gardening in 2005. Lindsay has a special eye for texture and color that in combination result in containers and window boxes that are works of art. Her attention to detail is evident in both her garden designs and in the day-to-day maintenance that keep them looking gorgeous throughout the seasons. Lindsay draws inspiration from the beauty of Nantucket and from her extensive travels with her husband and business partner, Sean, and their two young daughters. E V E NT B IO S BARBARA DAMROSCH has worked professionally in the field of horticulture since 1977. She
writes, consults and lectures on gardening and is co-owner, with her husband Eliot Coleman, of Four Season Farm, an experimental market garden in Harborside, Maine.
From May 2003 to September 2017, she wrote a weekly column for The Washington Post called “A Cook’s Garden.” Barbara is the author of several books, The Garden Primer, Theme Gardens, and The Four Season Farm Gardener’s Cookbook, co-authored with Eliot, which won the American Horticultural Society’s Book Award in 2014. She currently writes about gardening techniques for Better Homes & Gardens.
KATIE HEMINGWAY of Grass Roots Gardens has been a professional gardener and garden
design consultant on Nantucket for close to 20 years, after becoming an official "wash-ashore" back in 1997. She loves growing plants in her greenhouses, installing containers and window boxes, and enjoys advising homeowners on how to create their own special outdoor environment. In the wintry months, Katie loves to bake, cheer on her kids, and paint at her easel. She lives year-round on Nantucket with her husband Dane and their four busy children.
TAYLOR JOHNSTON'S work in horticulture spans nearly two decades, working with hardy
plants, tropicals, cut flowers, and edibles in both a public and private setting. Most recently, after leaving her perch managing the gardens and greenhouses at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and after a brief stint as head grower at New York Botanical Gardens, she teamed up with ED BOWEN, fellow reformed philosopher, hands-on gardener, occasional garden writer, and former proprietor of the nano-nursery Opus Plants, to form a collaborative, experimental nursery project called issima. Current work with ssima focuses on growing and selecting under cultivated, garden worthy plants, growing specialty cut flowers, and pursuing a limited number of garden design projects, including most recently, at the Guggenheim in Manhattan.
DAWN KELLY is the founder and creative director of Soirée Floral, a floral and event design
studio providing stunning environments and unusual arrangements for weddings, social occasions and corporate events. Dawn loves celebrating life's special moments. While her designs may be dramatic, Dawn’s clients will tell you she brings a sense of calm, balance and sensibility to the creative process. She credits her ability to stay calm under pressure to her time spent working on Wall Street. Having left behind the world of dark suits and pinstripes, Dawn revels in an environment where color and texture are her signature.
LEITH KINNEY is a dedicated Lighthouse School parent who truly enjoys planning and designing parties. Her tablescapes are one-of-a-kind and reflect her experiences from traveling abroad to Europe, Central Asia and New Zealand.
