BECAUSE OF THE DIFFERENT MEDICAL SYSTEMS IN CHINA AND AMERICA, CHINESE PARENTS FIND IT HARD TO COMMUNICATE WITH DOCTORS AND MEDICAL INSTITUTIONS. As the population of the United States becomes ever more diverse and the languages spoken multiply, growing numbers of patients who speak no English are being isolated by language barriers. Moreover, cultural and socio-economic influences affect the continuum of patientprovider communication. The consequences of medical miscommunication can be severe. Patients become sicker because they fail to stick to treatment regimens that they do not understand. They miss appointments. They pass on infectious diseases because they do not know how often to take their medication or when to return for follow-up

CHINESE PARENTS FIND IT HARD TO CHOOSE A SCHOOL FOR THEIR CHILDREN.

If you thought sending your child off to school for the first time was the hardest day of your parenting life, think again. Try taking them out of the first school, transporting them across town, state, country, continent and then asking them to go to a new one. In reality, starting a new school is not the end of the world that our children would have us believe, but until they are settled, it is incredibly stressful for all concerned. The bottom line is that you and your child are looking for completely different things in a school; for you, you need to be sure that the school provides a safe and nurturing environment and is academically stimulating, while your child wants friends, interesting teachers, fun play equipment and good snacks. Ask yourself what is most important to you long term. For “Third Culture Kids”, they are unlikely to achieve long term academic success without first addressing their emotional well being, so my advice is to look for a school that meets those needs first, and worry about the academics later. The same applies to a local move however – no matter what the reason for the move, until a child is comfortable and secure in their environment, they are unlikely to learn anything effectively.

14

MFA GRAPHIC DESIGN THESIS PROJECT

BECAUSE OF DIFFERENT CHILDREARING PRACTICES IN CHINA, CHINESE PARENTS FIND IT HARD TO ASSIMILATE INTO AMERICAN PRACTICES OF PARENTING. The Chinese believe that the best way to protect their children is by preparing them for the future, letting them see what they’re capable of, and arming them with skills, work habits and inner confidence that no one can ever take away.

Amy Chua is the daughter of Chinese immigrants to the United States. Her parents, she says, were “extremely strict but extremely loving.” She tried to raise her kids the same way.

What does this mean? Chua provides some specific examples.

For instance, Chua says she never allowed her kids to have a play date, watch TV, participate in a school play, or choose their own extra-curricular activities. The kids are also not allowed to “get any grade less than an A” or “not be the No. 1 student in every subject except gym and drama.”

When her 7-year-old daughter failed to master a new piece on the piano, Chua drove her relentlessly. “I threatened her with no lunch, no dinner, no Christmas or Hanukkah presents,” Chua writes, “no birthday parties for two, three, four years. When she still kept playing it wrong, I told her she was purposely working herself into frenzy because she was secretly afraid she couldn’t do it. I told her to stop being lazy, cowardly, selfindulgent and pathetic.”

Chua made her daughter work into the night, denying her even a break to go to the bathroom. “The house became a war zone, and I lost my voice yelling, but still there seemed to be only negative progress, and even I began to have doubts.”

WHY DO I DECIDE TO ATTACK THIS TOPIC?

22

I’ll share a story with everyone. Four years ago I came to the United States for the first time. I don’t know how much difference there was between the two countries. When I had a fever, I went to a hospital as soon as I could, just like I would in China. I went to the hospital front desk. I told them, I was sick and needed to see a doctor right away. However the nurse didn’t help me to see a doctor. She said, I needed to meet two requirements, first I must be a member of the hospital; second I needed to make an appointment first. In China, in the same situation, I could just go to any hospital and check in to see a doctor, they will take care the rest for me.

This experience helped me realized how different those systems are, which has led to my thesis project.

SOCIAL AND CULTURAL BELIEFS INFLUENCE CHILD-REARING.

Society and culture might be the second parents of children because of their lasting effects on a child’s development. The shared beliefs in a society or culture make their way into the home by how a parent chooses to educate her child. These cultural and social influences give rise to the many truths and stereotypes about intercultural differences between nations and ethnicities.

Global post 30

MFA GRAPHIC DESIGN THESIS PROJECT

MULTI-ETHNIC FAMILIES CAN CREATE COMPLEX PROBLEMS FOR PARENTS AND CHILDREN.

Different Cultures

Multi-ethnic families have become more common in the US. and are projected to increase, according to the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Yet parenting styles might not be affected when parents from different cultures raise children together. This might be because parenting partners from different cultures have already worked through cultural differences in order to maintain their relationship as a couple. Discrepancies in parenting styles may decrease the longer a couple has worked together to raise their child. When parents do have widely differing parenting styles, however, this can negatively affect a child.

Immigration

移民

Immigration can create complex problems for parents and children when it comes to parenting styles because of cultural differences. For example, children of Asian parents might come into conflict when faced with a mainstream U.S. culture that stresses independence when parents are emphasizing different values at home, according to Carnegie Mellon University. Traditional values might clash with values being absorbed by children at school or by being exposed to parenting styles of peers’ families. Immigrant families might also feel less confident about imparting cultural values to children since these may differ from the priorities promoted by US. culture, according to the Texas Center for the Advancement of Literacy and Learning.

Role of Culture in the Influencing of Parenting Styles

CHAPTER2 RESEARCH

31

WESTERN AND EASTERN PARENTS ENGAGE IN DIFFERENT PARENTING PRACTICES.

The amount of independence parents give their children also partly relies on culture and society. Western and Eastern parents, for example, engage in remarkably different parenting practices in regard to teaching their children independence. The Western parenting style puts heavy emphasis on independence, encouraging children in their hobbies and interests. Eastern parenting styles de-emphasize this type of independence in favor of dependence on the parents. A Chinese mom, for example, lets her children know that they can rely on her. A Chinese child might appear childlike to Westerners because of that, and Chinese children commonly live with their parents until they marry.

Western and Eastern parents 32

MFA GRAPHIC DESIGN THESIS PROJECT

SOME CHILDREN OF IMMIGRANTS FACE LANGUAGE BARRIERS IN THEIR OWN HOMES.

Dominic Quy Hoang, youth program coordinator at the Sacramento Chinese Community Service Center, estimates that 70 percent of the families he works with have languagebased problems. “They get really frustrated, the kids. They want to explain more and want to talk more, but they cannot. Poor communication leads to fights, bad feelings and unnecessary pain and anguish--because the problem is the lack of a common language.”

The reason they lack a common language, experts say, is simple: As they move through the American school system, the children of immigrants tend to “forget” the home language unless they immigrated at a later age or are surrounded at all times in an environment that reinforces the parents’ preferred tongue. Often, the parents’ Englishspeaking ability fails to match the child’s progression, and they start communicating in a fragmented, “half-and-half” manner. Parents speak to their children in their native tongue, using simpler vocabulary mixed in with some phrases in English. The children, who can comprehend better than they can converse, respond in elementary English, using rudimentary “home-talk” whenever possible.

Mental health service agencies, like the Richmond Maxi Center, in the middle-class Richmond district of San Francisco and the Asians for Community Involvement in the Silicon Valley of California, have been established to meet the needs of Chinese Americans and other Asian Americans. Today, both Chinese and Western medicines are widely used by Chinese Americans, although some use exclusively Chinese medicine while others only Western medicine.

CHINESE AMERICA CHILDREN WILL LIKELY LEARN ENGLISH FASTER THAN THEIR PARENTS, AND MAY ONLY WANT TO SPEAK ENGLISH.

Many Americans expect immigrants to learn English as soon as possible after arriving here. If Chinese parents can speak English, they will be at a better advantage than someone who does not. Most communities offer free or low cost classes to help you learn English. Once Chinese parents know some English, they can also take other basic classes that will help them with things such as learning to read and write better, use computers, use the bank, buy a home and many other useful things.

Chinese America children will likely learn English faster than their parents, and may only want to speak English. However, it is important that they also learn parent’s native language. They pass on infectious diseases because they do not know how often to take their medication or when to return for follow-up care. Doctors miss diagnoses, or get people to agree to procedures they do not fully understand.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO LEARN THE LANGUAGE IN A NEW COUNTRY.

Looking for a Job

Finding work when you don’t speak the language fluently, or at all, can be incredibly difficult. The options tend to be limited to working in the immigrant community with others who speak your language or accepting a lower paid post, which doesn’t involve a lot of talking. This is one of the reasons why highly educated immigrants often end up working in menial jobs and drawing small salaries when they are capable of doing much more.

Making Friends

Another common issue with immigrants is that they have to stick around others who speak the same language. Even someone who speaks a foreign tongue to a more or less good level can still struggle to relax enough to make new friends using their new language. This is why large immigrant communities build up and why new arrivals can spend years in the country without getting to know many people outside of this community.

THE “TIGER MOM” IS A STEREOTYPE OF CHINESE PARENTING IN AMERICA.

Chinese parenting interacts with mainstream American culture in an interesting way. Each culture supports a parenting style with different ideas and notions. In America, Baumrind’s model indicates that parents should combine a degree of strictness and emotional support. In China, Confucius argued that parents should aim to raise a child who knows how to respect social relationships. In sum, research studies that have examined general differences in children’s reactions to Chinese parenting and different factors that might influence the quality of parenting in immigrant families highlight the danger in applying mainstream American concepts of parenting to measure and understand Chinese parenting.

In the American cultural context, however, the general public and the media tend to make sense of Chinese parenting by directly comparing it with the American standard of parenting. As a result of the difference in cultural beliefs supporting Chinese parenting and American parenting, Americans interpret harsh and strict Chinese parents as “tiger moms.” Consequently, without the understanding of the cultural notion of training, the parenting style of the “tiger moms” appears controversial in the eye of the American public. However, when looking at Chinese parenting with the understanding of appropriate cultural values and beliefs, one can find the rationale behind the so-called “tiger mom” is actually to prepare the children to thrive in the environment of social order and respect that

Many Americans expect immigrants to learn English as soon as possible after arriving here. If you can speak English, you will be at a better advantage than someone who does not. Most communities offer free or low cost classes to help you learn English. Once you know some English, you can also take other basic classes that will help you with things such as learning to read and write better, use computers, use the bank, buy a home and many other useful things. You can also attend GED classes to finish your high school education if you haven’t, and can then go to college if you desire.

Your Chinese parents may be completely Americanized otherwise, but one cultural habit from the old country they can’t let go of is collecting gold jewelry for their daughters’ weddings. IN AMERICA, YOUR PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT IS DETERMINED BY WHERE YOU LIVE.

School choice options available to parents have increased dramatically in recent years. There’s a growing national sentiment that promoting competition in public education may spur schools to improve and that parents who invest energy in choosing a school will continue to be involved in their child’s education.

How much choice do parents have? It depends. The amount of choice varies from one school district to another, and varies from state to state. In most instances, it depends on supply and demand, and schools that are well regarded are generally in high demand. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), commonly referred to as the Affordable Care Act or ‘Obamacare’ was signed into federal law on March 23, 2010. It represents one of the most significant regulatory overhauls of the United States’ healthcare system since the passage of the Medicare and Medicaid Act in 1965. It also represents one of the most divisive political struggles in the U.S. and is frequently misunderstood – both by the media and by individuals. All politics aside, as many as five million foreigners visit the U.S. every month of the year and those foreign visitors are now affected by the healthcare changes here at home. In January 2014, nearly everyone in the U.S. is required to obtain health insurance or pay a tax penalty. While the individual mandate is designed to ensure that everyone in the U.S. has health insurance, the insurance needs for foreign visitors has not changed – foreign visitors to the U.S. should have travel insurance with coverage for emergency medical emergencies and evacuations. If you have friends and family visiting for the holidays, or you’re a non-U.S. citizen planning a trip to the United States, you should understand the following facts before visiting the United States. Are you ready for test?

I don’t like math!!!

Tyre said parents who pass an antimath sentiment on to their kids hurt their chances of success. In the U.S., parents, kids and even teachers may describe a person as "bad at math," but in other countries where kids perform better in math, if a student is not performing well in math, parents, kids and teachers say he or she needs to work harder. "Math is not a talent; like having a good singing voice, it's a muscle you develop," Tyre said. Be on the lookout for a teacher who expresses a great deal of enthusiasm about math, she said. "You do not want a teacher who is scared of math," she said.

I am not ready for it

Don't Focus Too Much on Standardized-Test Scores

Ideally, a school will teach a rich and complicated curriculum,

Sometimes, good test scores can be an indication that a school is doing a very good job of educating its students, but other times it can be an indication that the school is teaching to the test. Standardized tests only measure about a third

Tyre said, wherein students get a tremendous amount of information, with the test answers embedded throughout.

of the curriculum that should be being taught in the school, which means if the school is only teaching the test material, your child is missing out on a lot.

And, she noted, "Test scores going up for one year means nothing, so drop the contest mentality."
