THE FAYETTE HUMANE SOCIETY’S 8TH ANNUAL
Christmas Tour of Homes Nothing quite gets you into the spirit of the holidays like twinkling lights and fragrant greenery. With this in mind, the Fayette Humane Society (FHS) will kick off the season with its 8 th Annual Christmas Tour of Homes from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. on December 8, 2024. The tour will feature a joyful jaunt through four homes in Peachtree City that will open their doors to showcase exquisite architecture and furnishings. In addition to decorated Christmas trees for silent auction, live music, wine tasting and culinary delights, the homes will be paired with top designers to add touches of unique flair. “We hope to provide visitors with lots of festive inspiration, as well as help them support a common cause that ties these neighborhoods together,” says Lucy Hess, event chair. “Last year we netted around $28,000, and we’re working hard to build on the momentum.” As always, 100% of the proceeds from the tour will be used to fund the FHS spay and neuter program and to pay for the vaccinations and medical treatments of approximately 1,600 needy animals in the organization’s care each year. Incorporated in 1973, the FHS is the oldest nonprofit humane society in Fayette County, and it is staffed entirely by volunteers. Tickets are $40 per person. You can reserve your space by paying online and receiving your tickets at Wild Birds Unlimited, 100 North Peachtree Parkway, or at The Nest, 310 City Circle. There are also a variety of sponsorships available from $125 to $5,000 that offer valuable marketing exposure for businesses. For more information, click on www.fayettehumane.org.

Dr. Betsy
Grunch LADYSPINEDOC By: Deena Attia
Who is Ladyspinedoc? To start with, she’s a trailblazer in neurosurgery, a field where only 8.2% of practitioners are female. But Dr. Betsy Grunch is far more than just a neurosurgeon; she’s a daughter, wife, mother, friend, mentor, and an advocate for kindness towards oneself and others. These facets of her personality shine through her social media presence, where she connects with her followers by sharing her journey and insights. With over 2.2 million followers on TikTok and nearly 1 million on Instagram, her online influence surged during the pandemic. But the evolution of Dr. Grunch into the beloved "Ladyspinedoc" had been years in the making. Betsy was destined from a young age to be a strong and determined woman, set to achieve amazing things.
8
SOUTHERN WOMAN
Early Influences: A Mother’s Inspiration Like many daughters, Betsy idolized her mother. “My mom was my person. I was simply enamored by her.” Her mother, a single parent for the first five years of Betsy's life, was not only her biggest role model but also a sheriff’s deputy at a time when only 10% of the force were women. She worked patrol, joined the dive team, and served in the honor guard, all while raising Betsy on her own. Betsy thought she’d follow her mother’s footsteps into public service. But one night changed everything. During Betsy’s freshman year of high school, her mother was involved in a life-altering incident. On a late-night patrol, shots were fired at her car, causing her to run off the road and hit a tree, leaving her paralyzed with a spinal cord injury. Her bravery earned her the Medal of Valor and the Purple Heart, but the accident drastically changed the course of both their lives.
A Shift Toward Medicine After the accident, Betsy’s aspirations pivoted from public service to healthcare. Her desire to cure spinal cord injuries drove her toward neurosurgery. In high school, she shadowed a neurosurgeon, solidifying her determination. With no "Plan B" in place, Betsy embarked on the rigorous path to becoming a neurosurgeon, a journey that took 14 years to complete, from undergraduate education through residency. Today, Dr. Grunch stands as a testament to perseverance and dedication. Her mother has lived to see her daughter thrive in this maledominated field, and as Dr. Grunch celebrates her mother’s resilience, she continues to expand her presence and influence as Ladyspinedoc, captivating audiences across the globe.
Ladyspinedoc: Relatable and Real So, what draws people to Ladyspinedoc? It’s her relatability. While being a neurosurgeon may not be something the average person can relate to, many other aspects of Dr. Grunch’s life are. She shares a wide range of content, from educational posts to fun TikTok trends, highlighting her love for her family, friends, and her dedicated team at the office. Whether she’s discussing travel or launching her new line of neurological-themed merchandise, she invites her audience into her world. Recently, she announced: “Beyond excited that I will be launching a shop dedicated to the best system of the human body, the neurological system! In October, we will be bringing the dopest gear for the brain and spine that’s ever been made —and maybe some other items curated just by me.” Dr. Grunch’s transparency extends to her personal life as well. One of her most popular posts among her female followers was a video about her weight loss journey. She advocates for self-confidence and the importance of feeling good as a caregiver. Her message is, “Your attitude impacts people around you. Feel good, look good. A positive attitude goes a long way. Kindness propagates tremendously. Our kids learn from us, what they see at home they take to school.”
Dr. Grunch took part in raising awareness on World Brain Day, observed annually on July 22. This global event emphasizes the importance of brain health and the need to advance research into neurological diseases. On this occasion, she shared valuable insights, including: 10 Ways to Prevent Dementia: 1.Exercise regularly 2.Get sufficient sleep 3.Eat a healthy, balanced diet 4.Stay mentally active 5.Manage stress effectively 6.Engage in social activities 7.Protect your head from injury 8.Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption 9.Drink plenty of water 10.Prioritize mental health As Ladyspinedoc continues to grow in popularity, Dr. Betsy Grunch remains a source of inspiration for those balancing demanding careers, family life, and self-care, all while breaking down barriers in a field that has long been male-dominated. Through her social media, Dr. Grunch is reshaping what it means to be both a doctor and a woman in today’s world.

KATHRYN MUNCHER Clinic Coordinator for the Healing Bridge Clinic By: Deena Attia
If you're engaged in healthcare in Fayette County or the surrounding areas, chances are you'll cross paths with Kathryn (Kat) Muncher, Clinic Coordinator for the Healing Bridge Clinic in Peachtree City. The clinic offers free, non-emergency medical care to uninsured residents of Fayette and neighboring counties. Kat finds her role deeply fulfilling, explaining, "Patients can be seen without money getting in the way. Working in the nonprofit setting is a perfect fit."
When Kat is present, you’ll likely also see Mike Conaway, the Executive Director. Together, they manage the clinic's volunteers and actively participate in community events to spread awareness about the clinic’s mission and recruit volunteers. The clinic currently has 80 active volunteers and 28 healthcare providers who see patients regularly.
12 SOUTHERN WOMAN
“She has a unique talent for connecting with people. Her ability to connect with volunteers and patients alike makes her invaluable to the clinic.” ~ Mike Conaway
A Journey Through Healthcare Before making the Healing Bridge Clinic her professional home, Kat graduated with an LPN from West Georgia Technical College in 2014. She began her career in high-stakes environments like the ICU and Emergency Department at Piedmont Fayette. The fast-paced nature of those departments provided her with invaluable learning experiences. Eventually, Kat felt drawn to a different area of healthcare, one more centered around elderly care. In 2016, she transitioned to home health care, where she appreciated the slower pace that allowed her to form deeper relationships with her patients and their families. However, disillusionment set in when she witnessed systemic injustices in the industry, leading her to feel frustrated and emotionally drained. "I had a beautiful idea of what nursing was going to be in my head, and I felt let down," she reflects. This emotional toll pushed Kat to step away from nursing for a while. During her break, in 2018, she welcomed her son, Micah, with her husband, Michael.
One of the clinic’s most significant additions is Peachtree City's first Narcan box. Available to the public 24/7, this box provides fentanyl test strips, Narcan nasal spray, and injectable Narcan, which can save lives by reversing opioid overdoses. A Passionate Advocate for Healthcare and Community When Kat talks about her work, her passion is undeniable. She has found the perfect environment to utilize her nursing skills while fulfilling her desire to help others in a supportive and uplifting setting. In her free time, you’ll find her enjoying family activities like hiking, listening to live music—especially from local bands— exploring new restaurants, or making candles. Kat’s journey, marked by perseverance, compassion, and dedication, reflects the essence of the Healing Bridge Clinic—a place where the community comes together to provide care and support for those in need.
Finding a New Calling at the Healing Bridge Clinic Kat’s transition back into healthcare was a therapeutic one when she joined the clinic in 2021. Initially part-time, her role quickly expanded into a full-time position. Now, she manages scheduling and day-to-day tasks, ensuring smooth clinic operations. She thrives in the clinic’s positive atmosphere and values how the volunteers' contributions are consistently recognized. One of Kat’s most cherished experiences at the clinic has been working with A Better Way Ministries, an organization that supports men in recovery. Watching these men transform their lives as they progress through the program has deeply touched her. The partnership between the Healing Bridge Clinic and A Better Way Ministries exemplifies how two organizations can collaborate to create positive, lasting change. Recent Expansions and Future Goals This past summer, the clinic underwent a significant renovation, adding more treatment rooms and improving the overall flow of the clinic. A new conference room, complete with a hand-crafted table made by the men of A Better Way Ministries, now serves as a gathering space for meetings. Plans are already in place for further expansions, including phases 2 and 3, which will add more treatment rooms and extend clinic hours.

BUTTERFLY HIDEOUT, INC Mrs. Jacqueline Washington is the visionary behind Butterfly Hideout, Inc., a nonprofit organization committed to supporting at-risk communities and underserved youth through mentorship, workshops, life skills training, and therapeutic services. Growing up in Waterloo, Arkansas, Jacqueline faced a landscape devoid of community programs and resources for individuals like herself. Raised on a farm by her grandparents, Jacqueline learned the values of family and the importance of extending a helping hand to others. At the age of 17, she became a teen parent and endured the trauma of sexual assault. These challenging experiences motivated her to become a beacon of hope and a safe haven for those in need. Jacqueline earned her bachelor's degree in Sociology from Southern New Hampshire University. Alongside her role at Butterfly Hideout, she actively engages with individuals struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues. Her program fosters the development of new friendships, leadership skills, and positive self-identity, providing participants with an opportunity to build confidence and achieve success. After years of reflection and a deep desire to assist those who have faced trauma and adversity, Jacqueline proudly launched her non-profit organization in July 2024, which is recognized as a fully established 501(c)(3).

A Family AffairHelping Charities Make a Difference Story by Bonnie Helander Photos: Provided
Melanie Denney-Haas, Owner and Publisher of Southern Woman, first became aware of the impact David and Debra Rabideau were having helping local non-profits reach their funding goals, when she worked with the couple on the November 9th Fayette County Sheriff’s Foundation “Bootleggers & Badges” Gala. The Rabideau family doesn’t see their company, Allstar Charity Services, as just a job, but as a mission – to provide the finest quality sports, music and entertainment memorabilia items and exceptional customer service, so their charity partners can maximize their funding to better serve their communities. A retired accountant, with 37 years working in the corporate world, with companies such as Aetna, Delta Airlines and Scientific Games, David, and wife, Debra, a former registered nurse, both grew up and attended college in Massachusetts, and eventually moved to the Atlanta area in 1998, with their three children, Sarah, Daniel and Rebecca. After the move South, Debra focused on her family and a volunteer opportunity with Beacon of Hope in the Atlanta area, a Christ-centered, medically-accredited pregnancy resource center, where she used her nursing skills to help young mothers with unexpected pregnancies. Currently she volunteers with North Fulton Community Charities Food Bank and also volunteers teaching religious education at their local church, co-teaching with her daughter, Rebecca. All the children are grown and married and, David and Debra are delighted to welcome three grandchildren to their family!
16 SOUTHERN WOMAN
David and Debra always had an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire at some point to own a small family business, but it was not until 2015 that the right opportunity came along. At that time, their daughter, Sarah, was engaged to Robert, and the Rabideaus were starting the wedding planning process, including selecting a wedding venue. As they moved through the planning stages, David wondered if the wedding industry might be an interesting fit for their family. “We realized it was a very much a mom and pop industry with a high level of customer service and customized products that would be very difficult for corporate America to compete in.” David and Debra spent the next two years studying the industry, and decided to purchase, Carl House, a wedding and event venue, in 2017. Continuing their pledge to make their small business a family affair, David’s brother, Alan, and sister, Kim, joined the management team at Carl House. Daughter, Sarah, is a photographer and assists with special events, including Breakfast with Santa, and the Daddy-Daughter Dance, and daughter, Rebecca, does the marketing and social media. According to David, “It takes a special relationship to be able to work with family members. We are lucky to have such a family.” Owning Carl House was great preparation for what was to come. David realized this small business was teaching him a wider range of skills and experience than all his 37 years in the corporate world, where he only focused on one aspect of business – accounting. Now the family wears many hats, including administration, sales and marketing, and housekeeping, to maintain the 120-yearold Carl House.
Over his corporate career, David often chafed at his limited availability to donate more of his time to working with local charities. He was actually envious of Debra and how much fulfillment she got out of helping non-profits address the real needs in the community. As they neared retirement, David and Debra, developed a plan to purchase a business that directly helped non-profits meet their funding goals. After doing extensive research, they purchased the charitable fundraising company, Allstar Charity Services in 2020, just as David retired. Starting a business in 2020 at the beginning of the COVID pandemic was the worst possible scenario, but the couple knew it was the perfect opportunity for their family. The bank backed out on their funding, and they had to use most of their savings and tap into their retirement to get started. “Even though the timing was bad, it was the right thing to do,” recalls David. Allstar Charity Services is also family-operated. Son, Daniel, and daughter, Rebecca, work with David and Debra in the company. Revenue dropped significantly during the pandemic, as non-profits postponed all their fundraising activities. Carl House was shut down as well, but through perseverance and great customer service, they are slowly recovering, and now have 150 charitable clients, including American Red Cross, Bloom Our Youth, Resurgens Charitable Foundation, Newnan High School, and Fayette County Sheriff’s Foundation. David reflects: “It has been a long four years to recovery, but we made it through, and while not financially rewarding, the rewards of working day in and day out with charities have been greater than all the years we spent working in the corporate world.” Managing two businesses means the “retired” couple often works 70-hour weeks, but neither sees it as working! In fact, the family is expanding their vision to better serve non-profits by helping them be more strategic and efficient in obtaining funding so they can spend more time directly working toward their mission.
Statistics show that 50% of non-profit funding sources come from individual giving. 30% comes from fundraising activities, and only 20% comes from corporate giving. Put another way, Individuals donate around $280 billion per year and corporations donate about $80 billion. David notes, “We found the problem isn’t that corporate America doesn’t want to give, it just doesn’t have the internal focus of giving.” The Rabideaus hope to introduce a new product where they pair corporations with local charities, and then provide the administrative work for the corporation, such as coordinating employee volunteer days, running fundraisers, like golf tournaments and galas, and orchestrating corporate donations directly to the charity. “We hope to see corporate level giving increase to the level of individual giving. This is a long-term goal, that won’t happen overnight but we are focusing on getting local companies to routinely partner with 3-4 local non-profits.”

Soaring Dreams:
A Journey Through Aviation
As a teenager, Gregg found his passion for aviation while attending airshows with his father, which ultimately led him to enlist in the United States Air Force. After graduating from high school in May 1980, he dedicated the next decade to serving as an Avionics Mechanic, specializing in the F-4E Phantom II and the F-15E Strike Eagle. Once he completed his service, he transitioned to a role at Delta Airlines but remained committed to inspiring future generations to consider a career in the military. In 1998, he began attending airshows, engaging with young audiences and their families about the opportunities within the armed forces. There’s a distinct sparkle in his eyes when a child inquires about aircraft. To provide some background, the Thunderbirds, the official aerial demonstration team of the Air Force, were established on May 25, 1953. Throughout the years, they have flown a variety of aircraft, all while embodying the dedication of the service members who protect our nation daily.
20 SOUTHERN WOMAN
The mission of the U.S. Air Force is clear: to fly, fight, and win—delivering airpower whenever and wherever needed. Currently, the team showcases the F-16 Fighting Falcon, and we’ve had the pleasure of witnessing several of their performances this year. Earlier, we attended a joint training session in El Centro, California, where the breathtaking scenery complemented the skillful maneuvers of the aircraft. Our next stop was the vibrant city of Tampa, Florida, where we enjoyed a lively crowd at MacDill Air Force Base. Along with the thrilling main act, we were treated to an unexpected flyby of a B2 stealth bomber accompanied by two B1 bombers. Following that, we made our way to the Atlanta airshow in Peachtree City, featuring not only the Thunderbirds but also the USAF F-35A, the F-18 Rhino Demo Team, the P-51 Mustang, the B-25 Bomber, Greg Koontz in the Super Decathlon, Buck Roetman in the Pitts S2S, as well as the Attack Helicopter Demo and GSP Helicopters. To wrap up the season, we’re eagerly anticipating the Blue Angels Homecoming show at NAS Pensacola in Florida.
This year is particularly special as the Thunderbirds have been invited to perform alongside the Blue Angels. Stay tuned for an upcoming feature on this exciting event! We would like to extend our gratitude to #8 Major Bryce Turner and his Crew Chief, TSgt Chase Bradovich, for the insightful interview and tour of their aircraft during their visit to Atlanta. We look forward to our next meeting. This article is dedicated to our dear friend, Major Stephen “Cajun” Del Bagno (April 30, 1983 - April 4, 2018), and his family. “Find your PASSION, that gives you PURPOSE, be PERSISTENT in your pursuit, be PERSONABLE Humble, Credible, and Approachable, and you will PROSPER.” — Major Stephen "Cajun" Del Bagno

Maj. Stephen "Cajun" Del Bagno AKA “The Big Cat” Throughout his life and Air Force career, Stephen followed his heart, fought back from adversity and was determined to make his dreams a reality through hard work, dedication and sacrifice. His loss came as a shock to his family, friends, fellow airman, community and country. Stephen will be remembered as a warrior, talented fighter pilot, a good dude and an even greater friend. He had more than 3,500 flight hours in over 30 different aircraft and lived to fly and inspire the next generation. How lucky were we to have lived in Cajun’s presence? A SOUTHERN CHRISTMAS MIRACLE
At the heart of Magnolia Grove stood the historic Whitfield Manor, a grand antebellum mansion steeped in rich Southern history. Generations of the Whitfield family had called the manor home, and each Christmas, it became a beacon of warmth and joy for the entire town.
As the snow began to fall gently on Christmas Eve, the current matriarch of the Whitfield family, Miss Lillian, sat by the crackling fire in the manor's parlor, surrounded by her family and cherished friends. The flickering candlelight cast a soft glow on their faces as they shared stories of Christmases past and dreams of the future.
Suddenly, there was a gentle knock at the door, and a young woman stood on the threshold, her eyes filled with hope and uncertainty. She introduced herself as Sarah, a newcomer to Magnolia Grove, alone and in search of a place to spend the holiday. Miss Lillian's heart went The Gift of Generations In the quaint town of Magnolia Grove, nestled amidst the rolling hills of the Southern countryside, a sense of magic lingered in the crisp winter air as Christmas approached. The town's cobblestone streets were adorned with twinkling lights, wreaths of holly and pine, and the sweet melodies of carolers filled the night.

Festive INSPIRATION: Themed Christmas Tree Ideas As the holiday season approaches, many of us start to think about how to create a warm and inviting atmosphere in our homes. One of the most cherished traditions is decorating the Christmas tree, and this year, why not explore some unique themes that reflect your style and spirit? Here are six themed Christmas tree ideas that will bring joy and cheer to your holiday celebrations
Winter Wonderland
Vintage
For a cozy and inviting vibe, consider a Rustic Lodge tree that celebrates natural elements and earthy tones. Use burlap ribbon and twine to create garlands, and hang wooden ornaments, pinecones, and dried orange slices for a touch of rustic charm. Incorporate warm white lights to cast a soft glow, and use small fishing nets or plaid fabric as decorations to enhance the cabin feel. This theme is perfect for nature lovers and those who enjoy the warmth of a rustic retreat during the holiday season.
Rustic
Transform your living space into a serene snowy landscape with a Winter Wonderland tree. Adorn your tree with a palette of white and silver, evoking the beauty of fresh snow. Use faux snowflakes and shimmering silver ribbons to create a magical effect. Hang white ornaments shaped like icicles and snowballs, which will catch the light beautifully. To complete the wintery feel, finish off with a fluffy white tree skirt that mimics soft snow. This theme is perfect for those who love a crisp and clean aesthetic that celebrates the beauty of winter. 28 SOUTHERN WOMAN
Take a trip down memory lane with a Vintage Christmas tree that embraces nostalgia and warmth. Decorate your tree with a mix of pastel shades such as mint green, soft pink, and creamy white, reminiscent of Christmases past. Hang glass baubles, shimmering tinsel, and retro Christmas cards for a charming touch. A classic star or an old-fashioned Santa figure can serve as the perfect tree topper, adding to the whimsical feel. This theme is ideal for those who cherish tradition and want to create a cozy, sentimental atmosphere.
Tropical Break away from traditional colors and bring a splash of fun with a Tropical Christmas tree. Embrace vibrant hues like turquoise, coral, and bright yellow to create a lively atmosphere. Hang tropical ornaments such as flamingos, pineapples, and seashells to capture the essence of a beach getaway. Use string lights with a tropical twist and consider topping your tree with a starfish to complete the island vibe. This theme is perfect for those who love to celebrate the holidays in a unique and vibrant way.
Candyland Fantasy
For the literary enthusiasts, a Book Lover’s Paradise tree is a perfect way to celebrate your love for reading. Decorate your tree with pages from old books, miniature book ornaments, and inspiring quotes about literature. Use deep, rich colors like burgundy and forest green for the decorations to create an inviting and sophisticated look. Incorporate twinkling lights to add warmth, and consider using a vintage book as the tree's base for an added literary touch. This theme is ideal for anyone who loves to curl up with a good book during the holiday season.
