SOUTHERN WOMAN Tammy Osborne’s journey from an old church bus to a thriving boutique is a testament to her creativity, resilience, and love for her Southern roots. Feathered Darlin’ boutique is not just a mobile store; it is a celebration of Southern culture and style.

What inspired you to transform an old church bus into a boutique? I began my online boutique in August 2020, with my goal being to eventually open a brick and mortar. However, after attending several events (with a tent) and doing really well, I realized that it made more sense to take my business to where the people were instead of waiting for people to come to me. I noticed a lot of vendors bringing their products to events in trailers, but I’ve always pushed the creative boundaries a bit, so I started looking at old school buses. I repurposed and sold furniture for several years, so the desire to breathe new life into something that most people would write off was ingrained in me. I was also envisioning customers not just coming in to buy clothes but having a unique shopping experience that they wouldn’t forget.

What were the challenges you faced dueing the transformation process? There is definitely no rule book for converting a bus into a commercial space. My husband and I did the conversion on our own because we had no room in the budget for outside help. There was a lot of time spent watching videos of buses converted into tiny homes to get a general idea of how to make it simply functional, then honestly making the rest up as we went along. Every weekend for four months was dedicated to the renovation, with the biggest hurdles being windows that kept leaking, determining how to build an arched wall for the dressing room, and figuring out a layout that would allow the best flow for customers. There were times when it all became overwhelming, but I kept focused on the end result.

How did you curate your boutique's collection to reflect Southern culture with a touch of Boho-Chic? I had a vision of my ideal customer. She is a southern woman, of course, who feels her best in outfits that fuse together comfort, style and a bit of free-spiritedness and can be worn anywhere, from a wedding to a country music festival. I look for items that make it easy to pull together an effortless look but are still unique, by combining that feminine and flowy southern style with a bit of fringe, lace or crochet, then adding in some layered jewelry and maybe a felt hat as the exclamation point to her outfit.

How has your boutique impacted the local community? I recently opened the bus up to private bookings. For example, a local hair salon reserved the bus for a customer appreciation event that gave customers and salon employees the opportunity to socialize in a different way. I’ve also taken the bus to private residences where the hostess and her guests have the chance to shop at their own pace. The takeaway for me at these private events is how comfortable these women feel in an intimate and fun atmosphere. They step out of their style comfort zone and try something new. All the while, being encouraged and hyped up by their friends, coworkers, and other guests. It feels like I'm giving them a space where they can find confidence in navigating outside of the style norms and exploring that free spirit that I think lies in all of us. It's a bonding experience for sure, and those are the moments when I love what I am doing with this small business.

Oktoberfest in Helen

PROST! ENJOY A BAVARIAN ADVENTURE

Photos by Bonnie Helander and Alpine Helen White County Visitors and Convention Center Alpine Oktoberfest, held in the charming Bavaria-inspired town of Helen in North Georgia, is the longest running celebration of its kind in the entire United States – a muchanticipated event that has been engaging folks for 53 years! Held from September 7 – October 29, and hosted by the Helen Chamber of Commerce, participants enjoy great German food, entertainment, dancing to the polka, live music (accordion anyone?) and activities for kids of all ages. The Blue Ridge foothills of North Georgia have often been compared to Bavaria. This similarity inspired the German architecture of Helen, with its gingerbread trims and cobblestone streets. It is a delightful place to visit any time of the year, but comes alive during Oktoberfest! The Helen Festhalle, located at 1074 Edelweiss Strasse, is the center of the festivities. Here you can see performers in authentic German costumes, dirndls, Tyrolean hats and lederhosen, entertaining the crowd and can sample the wurst sausage, German potato salad, red cabbage and, of course, the beer! Make sure to check the schedule of keg tapping events held at many of the town’s restaurants and biergartens. During these ceremonies, a town official says a few words and the crowd chants “O’zapft is” (it’s tapped) and then “Oans, zwoa, drei, g’suffa!” (one, two, three…drink!)

HELEN ACCOMMODATIONS AND RESTAURANTS Helen is a wonderful day trip experience, but if you can plan an overnight stay, you can take advantage of all the area has to offer. There are accommodations to meet every interest, including German-themed hotels, national chains, bed and breakfasts and camping options. Popular Alpine-inspired lodging includes Valhalla Resort Hotel and the Heidi Motel. Cabins and camping sites are available at nearby Unicoi State Park and Smithgall Woods State Park. If Helen is fully booked, you can usually find great options in nearby Dahlonega or Cleveland. During Oktoberfest, German cuisine takes center stage! Hofer’s of Helen is the go-to place for breakfast or lunch. Don’t miss their famous Reuben sandwich. Other noted food establishments include The Heidelberg German Restaurant, Old Bavaria Inn Restaurant, Hofbrauhaus, Café International and The Troll Tavern. Make sure to ask about the Oktoberfest specials.

ACTIVITIES IN AND AROUND HELEN If wine is more your taste than beer, be sure to sample a few of the many wineries in and around Helen. Habersham Winery is family-owned and offers an extensive list of wines to taste, and features food items from around the world. Yonah Mountain Vineyards, in nearby Cleveland, is nestled at the base of beautiful Yonah Mountain and features scenic views and world-class wines. Other noted wineries include Sweet Acres Farm Winery Tasting Room and Fox Winery, both in downtown Helen. For nature lovers, there are miles of hiking trails, beautiful waterfalls and mountain views in the area. Raven Cliff Fails Trail is one of my favorite hikes, where you follow the trail about five miles (out and back) along a creek with several small waterfalls. Anna Ruby Falls is a must-see – a combination of two creeks that together create a 153 waterfall drop. Unicoi State Park and Smithgall Woods State Park offer many scenic trails with breathtaking scenery, especially in autumn during Oktoberfest.

INSIDER TIPS TO ENJOY YOUR VISIT TO OCTOBERFEST IN HELEN Helen can get crowded during Oktoberfest, especially on South Main Street through downtown. But there is a less-travelled road through town, Edelweiss Strasse, which runs parallel to South Main Street from the Budgetel Inn and Suites at the south end to the public parking at Chattahoochee Strasse on the north end (a good place to park). If you can schedule your visit during the week, you will enjoy the town with less traffic and crowds. Plan to be an early riser to hit the popular breakfast spots before lines form and peruse the many German-themed stores before they get crowded. Book your visit well in advance for Oktoberfest festivities. For more information on the festival and visiting Helen, go to

with

HELLO

clothing co.

Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind starting Haywood Clothing Co. and how it has evolved since its inception? When I first started the clothing brand, I actually began making clothing pieces from home. I began in 2020, at the height of the Pandemic, while sitting at home during lockdowns with my toddler. I was currently enrolled in nursing school, and really stressed out about the future and what was going on in the world. My husband told me to get a hobby because I was so focused on the negative, that I just needed to stop watching the News and find a better outlet. I began designing and making dresses. Over time, my hobby turned into a huge passion and a way to get my mind off of all of the negativity. When I felt stressed, I'd just sit down and start drawing up a new design. Eventually, I began doing pop-up events and festivals to sell my dresses, which really helped me get out of the house and around other people again. I even opened a storefront in Senoia, Georgia.

14 SOUTHERN WOMAN

What sets your country-themed clothing designs apart from others in the market? I think overall, the boutique and the clothing stand out on their own because there aren't many country or farm-themed boutiques, especially for kids. My slogan was always "Boutique Clothing for the Country Raised Child." The slogan and aesthetics truly represented my love of country life, and living on a farm raising my family. I also realized, that as long as there is a cow on it, people will indeed buy it! Haha We moved from the city of Atlanta to a tiny rural town, and I just fell in love with the country. People always see my work and ask if I'm from the country, and I always just laugh because I was born and raised in the city, but my heart was waiting for me out here. We live on a farm and raise livestock, and I love spending time with my kids outdoors learning to garden and homestead. You will find these themes all throughout my pieces and my marketing images.

Could you share some of the challenges you faced while transitioning from a hobby to a full-blown business, and how you overcame them? Some of the challenges I faced involved time management. I think as a mom, I'll always feel guilty no matter what my job is in life because it does take away my time from my family. I work at night or while they take naps so that I can give them more attention during their waking hours. Sometimes I definitely felt like I was being pulled in different directions wanting to grow and expand the business, but also wanting to focus more on the family. It leaves a sense of guilt when I spend too much time focusing on the computer, working events, and making dresses. That has been a major struggle as a mom business owner. I want to do more, but at the same time..do less. I hope that makes sense. I want the best of both worlds, but I am just one woman!

How has being a mother of three influenced your designs and the overall direction of your business? Everything I do and make, I have my three children in mind. While making items, I keep in mind, is it comfortable? Would my kids love this and personally wear this? Does it need pockets (My kids love to pick up trinkets while exploring outside, so of course we always need pockets!)? What can I do to make this fun while working with my kids? During the pandemic, I ended up leaving nursing school to stay home with my children, so everything I did revolved around them and their lives as well. The overall direction is eventually passing my business down to one of my kids, so I try as hard as possible to keep a good name and reputation so they inherit a truly great business one day.

September/October 2023 15

What strategies have you used to market and promote your clothing brand, both online and in your brick-and-mortar store? I have help with marketing from brand reps, and I have had a fantastic team of mamas and their little ladies help me model. Personally, my kids absolutely loathe the camera. I think I have taken too many photos and asked for help modeling one too many times from my kids, so luckily, I have had help from the community, whether it be a local photographer or a mama wanting to help model. We sometimes trade services and barter which I have found helpful as well. I have been absolutely blessed with so much talent from the community to help bring my dreams to reality and to really spotlight designs and images. Like recently, I had a red Cars theme dress, and the mom just went above and beyond photographing the most perfect lighting and posing. I can't take all of the credit in my business, because of moms like her and others, I have been able to grow and do what I do.

How do you ensure the quality and craftsmanship of your clothing items? My dresses are all hand embroidered, each piece is handcrafted, and designed by me. There is a lot of time spent behind the scenes picking out every single piece from the lace to the embroidery patterns, to even the ribbons. There is not one detail in the pieces that has not been picked out. I always have a sample made, and I do give it to my girl to have her do what I call a "Test run" for me, which is her playing and spending time in the piece, and then me washing it, to ensure it can pass the test of a child's wear.

Can you share any memorable customer stories or feedback that have made an impact on you and your business? Having customers who have been beside me since day one is truly memorable. I have grown with families and customers, especially at our local Senoia Farmer's Market where I set up a booth the past few years to sell my dresses. I have really gotten to make friends and be part of the community, and that strong connection especially during the Pandemic when everyone was social distancing is what made it so worth it for me. There were times I was dealing with postpartum depression, or just going through life events, and having those simple moments of seeing a familiar face and having a 16 SOUTHERN WOMAN

conversation and laughing just meant the world. My customers aren't just "customers," they're friends, they're family. It's been a short 3 years, but it's been so, so wonderful. I truly am so grateful for the sweet mamas and grandmas who have shopped with me. I couldn't just name one person, because so many ladies come to mind when asked this question. All I can say is, I have been majorly blessed by them, and their impact, no matter how simple, has been something I will always be so grateful for in life.

What are your future goals and aspirations for Haywood Clothing Co.? My future goal is to one day open a boutique where I can have just my designs in store. Right now, I have a boutique but I retail quite a few other brands as well. I think eventually, I would like my store to have its own custom appeal where I can make any piece of clothing, whether it be for a special event or just for fun. I'd love to have a special place where everything within that store was made by me. I would love to be able to have a super cute tea room as well. I think childhood is so important and we just grow up too fast, so I would love to have a place where kids can be kids. You can dress up, customize your dress, and have a tea party just because! No reason is needed, just dress up and have a treat. I hope this dream does become a reality. The recession and challenges from the market and inflation have made it a little difficult, but one day I know I will get there. I'm just waiting for the right time, and in the meantime, drawing up the plans.

How do you balance being a mother and running a successful business? Any tips for other moms who are aspiring entrepreneurs? Finding balance is crucial, like I said above, I try to do work and pack orders during the times my kids are asleep. As a nursing mama, I have to sit a lot, which helps me focus on social media and catching up on Emails, haha! I try to set limits because at first, I took too much time away from my kids by focusing on work and stressing out. I realized time was going too fast, and that time with my kids I will never get back. I have learned a better balance, just working around their schedules. My tip would simply be to try and include family in as much as possible. Have fun doing it, and don't spend so much time chasing the dollar that you forget what is truly valuable, because at the end of the day when I sat down and looked back at my pay at tax season, all I saw was the amount of time I spent. I have grown and learned from many hard lessons, so please do hear when I say, do chase your dreams and do what makes you happy, but don't forget your babies. Money will come and go, there will be hard times and good times. But I don't think you'll ever look back and regret spending too much time with your family. I think the simple proverb, "If it's meant to be, it will be" has really helped me. There were times I tried to force my business and wanted to grow so much and do more sales, but I just learned to sit back, relax, and if it happens, it happens, and stop stressing so much. Find that balance with work and family that fits you best, and create a healthy work environment.

Is there anything else you would like our readers to know about Haywood Clothing Co.? I just love designing pieces, and if you ever do have a dress made by me, just know a lot of thought and love has gone into it. We live in a world of fast fashion, where pieces are made by the thousands, but my dresses are all made in very small batches, so there will only always be only a handful in the entire world. Thank you so much for taking the time to listen to me and supporting a small business.

The Riviera Maya:

The Beach, The Jungle, and the Art of Doing Nothing BY: DEENA ATTIA We are lucky to live minutes from an international airport where we can hop on a flight in the morning and arrive in another country to enjoy lunch overlooking the beach. At the end of June, on a Wednesday, we took an early morning flight to Cancun, Mexico. That was not our destination. We like to find some off-the-beaten-path places that are less common to visit. Puerto Morelos and Punta Allen were our destinations for the trip. This was my third time seeing these areas. I knew what to expect and look forward to.

Puerto Morelos is less than 30 minutes from the airport. It's a hip beach town with fabulous food and friendly people. There's a downtown area with many excellent restaurants, good shopping for souvenirs, and a high-end grocery store called Chedraui. I didn't feel I was missing out on anything in this lovely beach town. Upon arrival in Puerto Morelos, we stopped for lunch at El Merkadito. We had a view of the Caribbean Sea while we sat on the covered deck. We started with the ceviche, and I ordered a massive tuna tartare dish. I was expecting it to be an appetizer size. We feasted on a wood-fired octopus that was so tender I cut it with my fork. The sauce that came with it made it a 10 out of 10. Our first meal of the trip was fantastic! We wanted to stay in the little town, so we walked to another restaurant on the beach, Muelle Once, and we ordered cocktails. We loved the ambiance so much that we returned for breakfast a few mornings. On our way back to the car, we stopped in Chedraui for supplies and treats for our stay. Walking through the grocery store was a feast for the eyes when I came to the bakery area. The selection of pan dulce "sweet breads" is Mexico's version of pastries. Pan dulce is perfect in the morning with a cup of coffee. Our accommodations for the nights in Puerto Morelos were in a rustic cabin in the jungle. Javier, my boyfriend, and travel companion built the place and the neighboring one. It was a short drive from the beach and the main town. The area around the cabin is partially secluded. There is new construction of other homes nearby. The jungle is dense, and plenty of privacy still provides a peaceful oasis. I felt very comfortable in the environment and enjoyed the open-air upstairs loft. The bathroom has the most amazing concrete tub. Filling the tub with fresh, well water and relaxing after a hot day at the beach was a highlight of my time there. Watching the water come out of the conch shell faucet was so cool. Sleeping in a hanging bed was another new experience for me, and I fell asleep immediately. It could have been the gentle swaying of the bed or the fresh air that filled the cabin. In the mornings, we had our coffee on the upper balcony. We watched several varieties of striking birds fly around the trees and occasionally settle down long enough for us to admire them while they perched. We spent Thursday at Unico Beach Club. We had a sweet spot on the beach with chairs and an umbrella and top-notch service by the attentive staff. They have a vast menu with salads, sandwiches, snacks, and a full bar. I spent a lot of time reading on the beach; I took a couple of cat naps, dipped in the water, and watched the many vendors that strolled back and forth selling their wares. People sell handmade jewelry, baked goods, fresh fruit, toys for the kids, sunglasses, and even woven rugs. The most amazing display of the afternoon was when three men dressed in indigenous costumes performed a short ritual ceremony.

In the second part of our trip, we had a little more adventure on the agenda. Friday morning, we left early to head to Punta Allen. We knew we had a long drive, about 4 hours or so. We got through the traffic around Playa del Carmen, and before reaching the beach in Tulum, we stopped for breakfast. Before our breakfast stop, while we waited at a red light, a young twenty-something Mennonite Mexican man was selling something that caught Javier's attention, and he waved the guy over to our car. The young man was dressed in starched black overalls and a white and black striped button-down shirt and wore a wide-brimmed hat. He had a fair complexion, but it was apparent how the sun had taken its toll on his face. He was selling homemade cheese and cookies. He had two varieties of cookies, one with leche and the other with miel (milk and honey). It only took moments for the red-light transaction to take place, and once the light changed, we were off with our cheese and cookies. I must admit buying cheese from a stranger at the red light would not be something I would have done on my own, but Javier assured me it was good and not to worry. Since Javier is a history buff, he told me all about the Mennonite community in Mexico.

September/October 2023 19

El Capitan is in a super convenient spot to pull over and grab a bite before the long slow ride to Punta Allen. It's about a 33-mile stretch once you get through the beachside part of Tulum and reach the entrance of the biosphere, which begins the journey on the unpaved road with many potholes. Punta Allen is a fisherman's village with about 500 people. It is located on the Caribbean side of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is well worth the 2–3-hour drive because, on the way, there is plenty of wildlife to spot. We saw loads of iguanas, birds, and other exotic animals. The dense jungle is on both sides of the road for most of the drive, and you often catch a great view of the beach. When we arrived midafternoon at Hotel Cielo y Selva, the first thing we did after checking into our room was pop off the top of a cold drink and sit on the front patio of our room and admire the view. We saw a few other couples during our stay, but the property is large enough that you feel like you are on your own private island. The hotel property has three options for accommodations. They have rooms with a bathroom, fans to keep cool, and mosquito netting over the bed. If you are into glamping, that is an option, and just plain camping tents are available with a nearby communal bathroom. I will always prefer a proper room, but the first time we stayed, we did sleep in a tent for one night. Hotel Cielo y Selva has a natural rustic charm, and a touch of luxury too. Room service, a bar, and a restaurant are available and provide excellent food and beverages. Breakfast is served anywhere you want to settle down on the property, and the menu offers a variety of typical breakfast foods prepared in a gourmet way. Regarding lunch and dinner, the options can stretch beyond the menu if you explore a little and talk to some locals. During lobster season, July 1 through February 28, fishermen bring their catch to the small dock in town, and locals and tourists can pick what lobster they want for dinner. These spiny lobsters are giant and reasonably priced compared to the US. You choose your lobster, pay, and carry it live to a restaurant, and the cook will prepare it to your specifications, and it is served with veggies, rice, and a salad. The hotel will also prepare it if you want to carry the heavy lobster back down the beach. On this trip, we were there on the opening day of lobster season, but the fishermen did not go out. We still had a fresh catch of the day. One of the men who took care of the property at the hotel hooked us up with two Red Snappers from a local fisherman. They were reasonably priced, and each was large enough for us to share. We had the hotel restaurant prepare the fish for dinner for two nights. Each dinner was prepared differently and served with veggies and rice. On both nights the fish was fantastic, and we had a table right on the beach.

Aside from eating, there are a few other things to do in Punta Allen. We walked along the beach and wandered into the small town on our first afternoon. There are family-owned restaurants, a coffee shop, a Catholic Church, a soccer field, a small store to buy essential items, and a few small hotels and fly-fishing lodges. The one tour that guests can take is called "The Tour." It's a small boat tour with up to six people, and you can see nature in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere. We went on the tour the first time we visited and saw a lot of dolphins and a sea turtle that captured my attention for a long time. We stopped in an area for snorkeling, and one more spot where we swam, and the water was crystal clear. If you like biking on the sand, you can borrow a bike from the hotel and ride to the lighthouse. Along the way, you can stop at places on the beach and get some great pictures. During this trip, we focused on the art of doing nothing. We had three nights in Punta Allen and enjoyed the calmness of the environment and the ability to completely disconnect for most of the day. In that part of Mexico, there is electricity for two periods of the day. No electricity, no Wi-Fi, and no phone service. However, we could use Google Maps to get there and back while traveling. A trip to the Riviera Maya can be as packed with activities or as relaxing as you want. Our objective for the trip was relaxation and disconnecting. The nature in the jungle and the calmness of the salt water helped recharge us for the rest of 2023 until we can return, which I hope will be soon.

The Pink Figgy: A DARLING DELIGHT IN CHARLESTON By Meredith Collins Pierce 22 SOUTHERN WOMAN

Charleston, SC, known for its picturesque Rainbow Row and the majestic Ravenel Bridge, now boasts a new darling addition to its charm a cute, little pink car named Fiona, also known as The Pink Figgy.

The Pink Figgy is a rare gem, a limited-edition Nissan Figaro that was exclusively sold in Japan in 1991, with only around 20,000 units produced. This blush-colored beauty is a twodoor, right-hand drive, fixed-profile convertible, and yes, she is pink! Fiona made her debut in Charleston in March 2020 and has quickly become a beloved photography and event prop in town. You can often spot her striking poses along The Battery, in front of the iconic The Mills House Hotel, and making surprise appearances at various events throughout Charleston. As the proud owner and creator of The Pink Figgy, I knew I had stumbled upon something truly special with the Figaro. I always say that one doesn't have to be a car enthusiast or a lover of all things pink to appreciate the charm and quirkiness of "Figgy," the affectionate nickname we've given to this delightful car. When I started this business, I realized that I couldn't compete with the larger car rental companies and their vast fleets of vehicles. So, I knew I had to offer something unique, something that would captivate and charm. And that's when The Pink Figgy came into the picture. With her soft pink hue and her fun and flirty demeanor, she became the perfect prop for photoshoots and events.

Over the past three years, Fiona has been a part of countless memorable moments, from senior portraits to engagement sessions, and even branding shoots. She never fails to turn heads, and when she's not busy posing for photos, she spreads joy as she cruises through the streets of Charleston.

EARLY DETECTION IS KEY TO BEATING BREAST CANCER STORY BY MICHAEL K. BOYLAN, PIEDMONT HEALTHCARE

One in eight women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime, making it the single most common type of cancer among women. Eighty percent of these women do not have any of the reported risk factors, other than being female and aging. The key to surviving breast cancer is early diagnosis, and a mammogram is the first line of defense against breast cancer and remains the most reliable diagnostic tool for doctors. “A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast which can detect abnormalities in breast tissue,” said Mio Yanagisawa, M.D., a breast surgeon at Piedmont Fayette Hospital. “In addition to getting an annual mammogram, women should also do regular self-exams of their breasts and report any changes to their primary care physician.” Piedmont Fayette offers a full complement of breast screenings and other tests to help detect breast cancer early. Mammogram technology has greatly improved, and Piedmont Fayette offers the latest in mammography imaging, including digital mammography and tomosynthesis 3-dimensional (3D) breast imaging. Digital mammography uses compression and x-rays to create clear, 2-dimensional images of inside the breast. Tomosynthesis 3-dimensional breast imaging produces a series of contiguous, thin slices of breast tissue allowing doctors to examine breast tissue one layer at a time. The Women’s Imaging Center at Piedmont Fayette is recognized as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology, offering comprehensive breast health services including breast ultrasound, breast MRI, stereotactic guided breast biopsy, ultrasound guided biopsy, and MRI guided breast biopsy. Genetic counseling is also available for patients who may be high-risk due to family history. The Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness Center at Piedmont Fayette offers complimentary support services and programs to assist patients and their loved ones during treatment and recovery. The program, MyFit RX, which is offered at the Piedmont Wellness Center, helps patients get stronger so that they are better able to tolerate treatment and recovery.

“This is a big asset for our patients. We’re seeing good results and making a positive difference in how they feel and how well they recover,” said Dr. Yanagisawa. In 2023, the American Cancer Society estimates over 297,000 cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in the United States, and more than 43,700 will die from the disease. In Georgia, an estimated 9,170 women will be diagnosed this year. “The diagnosis is always scary, but breast cancer is no longer a death sentence in any way, shape, or form,” said Dr. Yanagisawa. “If it is caught early, a person’s survival rate is nearly 99 percent.”

SUPPORT NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

SCHEDULE YOUR

MAMMOGRAM! October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Southern Woman wants you to take action to spread the word about breast and other cancers. The most common kind of cancer for women (except for skin cancers), breast cancer will strike about one in eight women in the United States at some point. While this statistic is disturbing, the good news is most women will survive a breast cancer diagnosis if the disease is found and treated early. Early detection starts with monthly self-exams and a regularly scheduled mammogram. Women who are 35 years old should schedule a baseline mammogram, and those over 40 should schedule a screening mammogram each year.

GET INVOLVED!

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, known for its pink ribbon theme, supports campaigns to highlight early detection, educate people on breast cancer risk factors and raise funds for breast cancer research.

What Can You Do? KNOW YOUR RISK Tell your doctor about any family history of breast cancer.

GET SCREENED Schedule your mammogram each year.

CHECK YOURSELF Do a monthly self-exam and let your doctor know if something does not feel “normal” to you.

DID YOU KNOW? Breast cancer accounts for about 30% of all new cancer cases in women each year in the United States. Black women are most likely to die from breast cancer than women of any other racial or ethnic group. Experts believe that it’s partially because about one in five Black women is diagnosed with triplenegative breast cancer, more than any other racial or ethnic group. About 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer. These occur due to genetic mutations that happen as a result of the aging process and life in general, rather than inherited mutations. (Statistics provided by Breastcancer.org)

My personal experience with Wreaths Across America came in December, 2019, when my husband and I stopped at the cemetery at White Oak ARP Church in Senoia to lay some holiday flowers at my parents’ headstone. We were so surprised and touched to see a fresh balsam fir wreath, festooned with a red bow, placed there to acknowledge my father’s military service as an Army Corporal in World War II. There were dozens of wreaths scattered throughout the cemetery to mark the site of each buried veteran, including my uncle, who survived being a POW in Germany during World War II. Wreaths Across America is the inspiration of Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath Company in Harrington, Maine. In 1992, the wreath company found itself with a surplus of wreaths they did not want to just throw away. Worcester recalled a visit to Arlington National Cemetery as a boy that made a profound impression on his life. He realized his freedom and values were due in part to the courage of the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and were now laid to rest in Arlington. With the aid of the Maine U.S. Senator, Olympia Snow, Worcester placed the surplus wreaths at each headstone in one of the older sections of the cemetery. Worcester quietly continued his annual tribute of placing wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery for several years. Then, in 2005, a poignant photo of the wreaths on the graves surrounded, by fresh snow, went viral on the internet, and the wreath company was inundated with thousands of messages from people across the nation who wanted to thank Worcester for honoring our country’s heroes, help support the Arlington project, or request wreaths at other cemeteries. Thus Wreaths Across America was born!

Story by Bonnie Helander Photos by Sam Patton, Jessica Whelan, Wreaths Across America, Bonnie Helander

In 2007, the Worcester family and supporters formed the non-profit, Wreaths Across America. The mission of the organization is to “Remember the fallen – Honor those that serve – Teach the next generation the value of freedom.” The goal is to eventually place a wreath on every hero’s grave each December by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies throughout all 50 states. Geralyn Daniel, a retired Air Force Sr. Master Sargent, is a volunteer with the Greater Fayette Women’s Club, and the Location Coordinator for the Wreaths Across America project at Camp Memorial Park in Fayetteville. For the second year, the women’s club is volunteering its services to help raise sponsorships to place wreaths on each veteran’s grave at Camp Memorial Park. According to Geralyn, the club raised enough money in sponsorships last year to place 547 wreaths on graves at Camp Memorial Park, but there were 657 veterans interred there. When their shipment of wreaths was delivered, the 18-wheel tractor trailer dropped off enough boxes of “extra” wreaths to cover all the veterans’ graves! Each wreath costs $17, so to place a wreath at each veteran’s grave at Camp Memorial Park will cost approximately $11,000. Wreaths Across America returns $5 to the club for each wreath that is sponsored, and the club donates this to local veterans’ groups. Asked why she is giving leadership to the project, Geralyn replied, “Honoring and remembering veterans is important to me. All of us are involved with Wreaths Across America because we simply want to give back to the local veteran community and also to get the local civilian community to participate in a cause that we think all Americans can agree and come together on. The ultimate goal is to Remember our fallen heroes, Honor all service members and Teach our younger generations the value of freedom.” Geralyn is also coordinating a wreath-laying project with Ladies on Spokes bicycle club at Sharon Memorial Gardens in Tyrone.

Debbie McFarland

SPREADING SPARKS of

kindness

Story by Bonnie Helander, Photos by The Studio at Cedar Hill

Local Photographer, Debbie McFarland, owner of The Studio at Cedar Hill, is celebrating her 25th anniversary since opening her photography studio in 1998. Her business vision has always been to create images which capture each client’s uniqueness, value, and special beauty. Debbie admits that for many years she struggled with self-doubt about her own appearance until one day she had an epiphany – she realized she was God’s unique creation, and she was being disrespectful to doubt His design. This fresh perspective gave her the increased impetus to continue to help others see themselves as God sees them, and motivated her to spearhead projects to encourage kindness, and to help women and girls be more confident and understand their potential. A move from Boston when she was nine years old landed Debbie in Peachtree City Georgia. She was in the first graduating class at McIntosh High School and later received an Art Degree in Printing and Drawing from Georgia State University. It was an elective course in photography that captivated Debbie and pointed the path to her future career. Debbie took additional photography courses and worked hard to be certified through the Professional Photographers of America before opening her photography studio in 1998. She has received many international awards over the years, including the Kodak Georgia Photographer of the Year, and was recognized as one of the top 5% of photographers whose work was featured in numerous publications. 28 SOUTHERN WOMAN

Debbie and husband, Kevin, reared six children, now grown, and have five grandchildren. A year and a half ago, right in the middle of the pandemic, Debbie and Kevin purchased a 1930s farmhouse on ten acres. They have completely renovated the farmhouse and updated the barn, which is now Debbie’s art and photography studio. The couple opened The Flower Farm earlier this summer at the farm in Brooks as a backdrop for her photography clients and a place for anyone from the community to come out in the summer and, for a small fee, pick some beautiful, old-fashioned flowers like dahlias, sunflowers and zinnia. Debbie’s business priority is to treat her clients like royalty. She designed her studio in serene and peaceful colors so clients feel comfortable, loved and pampered when they come in for a sitting. “I was given this God-given gift of photography, and I should honor that by giving back to people. It is all about how you treat people,” says Debbie. Spreading Sparks of Kindness In December, 2014, on her 45th birthday, Debbie decided, as a gift to herself, she would do 45 small acts of kindness to help make other people feel loved and valued during the holiday season. She posted her commitment on her Facebook page, along with her ideas for small acts of kindness, and hoped it would inspire her friends and followers to do the same. According to Debbie, “It only takes one spark to ignite a wildfire!”

Facebook friends were captivated by her challenge and began posting their own small acts of caring. Her kindness movement spread rapidly worldwide to over 50 countries and was featured prominently in news stories and TV interviews all across the country. This avid, worldwide interest motivated Debbie to create an international Facebook page, Sparks of Kindness, which now has over 8,000 members. Debbie also administrates a similar Facebook page, just for Georgia residents, called Sparking Georgia. According to Debbie, “Sparks of Kindness is about being on the lookout for opportunities to do random acts of kindness by keeping our eyes, ears and hearts open to see the moments when we can jump in and make a difference. If we open our hearts to doing a tiny act, God opens doors to bigger acts.”

While some acts are spontaneous, Debbie also encourages people to plan acts of kindness into their schedule. For example, if you have a doctor’s appointment, take flowers for the receptionist or bring hot chocolate on a cold day to the school crossing guard. And always leave a small encouraging “spark card” note! The Sparking Georgia Facebook group has several planned events each year to “spark” people with kindness. This fall the group is collecting winter clothing to distribute to the homeless in the Atlanta area. They will put together packages for each person that includes a bag, blanket, coat, gloves, scarf, hat, underwear, socks, toiletries and snacks. Last year they donated 533 bags! Tween Empowerment Debbie has a heart for young girls who are struggling with their appearance and selfesteem. She has noticed that girls younger and younger are unhappy and feel lost – a result of the insidious influence of social media, with its unrealistic portrayal of life. To help girls (ages 9-12) understand their true beauty and worth, Debbie hosts Tween Empowerment photo sessions. In advance of the session, Debbie asks each girl’s mom to send out a series of questionnaires to loved ones and friends to write words of affirmation and uplifting stories about the girl. After the photo session, when the young girl returns to see her photos, she actually sees a slideshow Debbie has created that displays the photos, intermingled with the loving words people shared in the questionnaires. After seeing the slideshow show, each girl responds with a big smile and usually a mixture of laughter and tears. Many remark, “I never knew people felt this way about me.” The photo sessions have proven so successful that Debbie recently hosted a Tween Empowerment Workshop for 50 young girls that featured motivational speakers, swag bags, a short photo session and an art project. It was a huge hit!

“Hometown Heroes” were next to benefit from Debbie’s “sparks of kindness” during the pandemic. She identified local heroes who were making a difference and invited each to meet her in an outside space to have their picture taken as a thank you for their dedication during this trying time. She photographed first responders, medical personnel, a lady making and donating masks, another doing online free art classes for children and one hosting free online yoga classes. Grocery store workers, pilots and many others who kept tirelessly working during COVID were photographed and written about on her blog and in social media. An artistic mural on her barn door shares a message that sums up Debbie’s philosophy – LOVE LOUDER!

For more information about The Studio at Cedar Hill, Sparks of Kindness, or Tween Empowerment, visit cedarhillstudios.com.

SPARKS OF KINDNESS TIPS Drop off treats at a police or fire station. Take pet food to an animal shelter. Leave flowers anonymously for your neighbor. Send a thank you note or drop off treats for your pastor. Leave a thank you note for the mailman. Take coloring books and/or magazines to waiting rooms at hospital. Donate toys, clothes, food, and furniture to local charities. Thank a teacher or hair stylist with candles. Leave quarters with note at the laundromat. Pay for someone’s meal at a restaurant.

Debbie is indefatigable in her pursuit of kindness. During the COVID pandemic, she donated free photo sessions to 120 seniors of the class of 2020 so they could be photographed in their prom outfits or senior graduation caps and gowns, even though proms and graduation ceremonies could not be formally held that year! Debbie recalls one senior girl sharing she had tried on 45 prom dresses before she picked “the one” and then prom was cancelled. “I tried to bring a little bit of bright light into their lives during a horrible year,” recalls Debbie.

GARDEN TOUR fayetteville

The vibrant colors of autumn are beginning to paint the world around us, but the remnants of the scorching summer still linger. It can be quite a challenge to venture into the garden amidst the relentless heat, suffocating humidity, and pesky bugs. However, fear not, for the season of change is just around the corner. As we eagerly await the arrival of fall, it is the perfect time to revitalize your outdoor haven. So, pour yourself a steaming cup of apple cider, find solace under the gentle breeze of your porch fan, and let these magnificent Fayetteville gardens and the wisdom of their green-thumbed owners inspire you to transform your landscape this autumn.

SANDY’S G a r d e n i n g T i p s :

Inspiration

It’s all about the Soil: Sandy makes it a top priority to enrich her soil by composting and adding other soil amendments. Happy soil means happy plants! Take the time to enrich your soil, and you will save money over the long run. Don’t Get Overwhelmed: Focus on one area of your garden at a time. Start in a place where you can see and enjoy what you have accomplished. Stage a small vignette (create a scene) of a few things placed together – a pot of flowers, a stature, a bench. Use odd numbers for balance and use different plant textures and complimentary colors for added interest. Get Inspired: Visit public gardens and take photos to illustrate what you can do in your own space. Buy a few basic gardening books on design, and peruse online sources, like Pinterest, for additional ideas.

Sandy and Morris Kelly have lived in their Fayetteville home for over 26 years, and during that time they have completely redone their one-acre garden, adding all new plants, except for the large trees. Sandy, who retired after working 50 years as a hair stylist, has transferred her styling flair to her garden, where she is adept at creating artistic garden rooms and vignettes, combining plants and carefully chosen focal points. Sandy can recall once bartering with a client who was a landscape designer to trade a basic garden plan for her yard in exchange for a hair coloring service! While Sandy is the creative force in the garden, Morris is in charge of the grass and the muscle work. He also built the garden shed and the arbor which are featured focal points. Together they have designed an informal and serene woodland setting, with a trail through the woods, a swing to stop and enjoy the view, and fencing to deter the persistent deer! The landscaping includes native azaleas, boxwoods, blueberries and colorful perennials, including daylilies, roses, coreopsis and penstemon.

Four years ago, Sue Casey decided to downsize. She quickly found and immediately made an offer on a lovely Fayetteville home, when she fell in love with the pool and the covered back porch. Sue had a vision to enhance the space, and Art of Landscaping exceeded her expectations by designing a stunning backyard oasis for her, filled with hosta, Japanese maples and colorful pollinator plants that attract a bevy of butterflies, bees and birds. Sue loves to entertain, and her back porch and remodeled pool deck have become a mecca for her friends and family. Sue calls 2023 the “Year of the Succulent!” She has fallen in love with the many colorful and whimsical varieties of succulent plants. Matt Jordan, at Art of Landscaping, designed stunning succulent pots, filled with color and funky shapes and textures. According to Sue, “Who needs flower blooms when you can enjoy the array of colors in succulents?” Tall containers at standing height were also added for Sue to enjoy planting a vegetable garden while standing, Tall containers are a great option for those who want to continue to garden while protecting knees and minimizing kneeling and bending.

JERRIE’S G a r d e n i n g T i p s :

Patience! Gardens take time and are always evolving. They also take faithfulness to keep them nurtured. Take the time to appreciate each new season and plant for the future. Be patient and selective until you find the perfect pieces for your space. Start Small: Start with a small area of your garden and finish it completely to your satisfaction. Then move on to the next place, always understanding that you will continue to update all your spaces as time and your mood dictates. Use Containers for Instant Gratification: Pot up some beautiful containers and mass them together for instant appeal. Start with color combinations that go well together. Jerrie always uses purple in her designs. She loves how purple pops with combinations of yellow, red and peach.

Jerrie Cauley believes she was born to garden! Puttering around and enjoying her garden is her passion, and over the years has helped her through some tough times. When Jerrie and husband, Mark, first saw the five-acre Fayetteville home they would purchase in 2010, it was an ugly duckling! The house and yard needed so much work that Mark was skeptical about purchasing it, but Jerrie had a vision. She got to work on the overgrown yard, and during 3 ½ years of hard labor, she dug out rocks to line all her pathways. Her goal was to create a place of serenity – a calming, peaceful place where she could feel close to God. Walking down her pathways, lined with flowering perennials and evergreen shrubs, you know that Jerrie succeeded in creating a special, spiritual sanctuary. Jerrie loves groundcovers and plants that cascade. She has added spots of color and whimsy with containers of blooms and statuary. She selects each piece carefully, always getting something she loves. Jerrie admits she is a homebody and views her back garden as her favorite vacation spot.

SUE’S G a r d e n i n g T i p s :

Recently Jerrie decided to simplify her front yard in order to spend more time in her back garden. Robbi Martin, owner of Art of Landscaping, helped design a beautiful but low maintenance front garden that won’t take as much of Jerrie’s time.

Take Care of your Container Plants: Potted plants need a little extra attention, since they dry out easily in our heat. Research the watering needs of your plants. Succulents are drought-tolerant and require less water, but other plants may need to be watered daily. Fertilize your containers as needed. Sue’s secret ingredient for healthy plants is fish emulsion. She uses 4 oz. per gallon of water. In the early morning before it gets too hot, check your containers and deadhead (pinch off faded blooms). This encourages new blooms to grow! Garden for Wildlife: Plant something for the critters to enjoy! A garden comes to life when you add pollinator plants to attract butterflies, hummingbirds and bees.

Chad and Sharon Ruddle had a unique and surprising reason for moving from Ohio to Georgia in 2016. They wanted to find a hotter and sunnier climate better suited for Tank, their 22-year-old African sulcata tortoise! According to Chad, who got Tank as a hatchling, tortoises live on land, are vegetarian and can thrive for 80-100 years in captivity with the right environment. They need a warm habitat of at least 65 degrees to enjoy the outside. Tank is obviously happy in his new home!

SHARON’S G a r d e n i n g T i p s :

After their move to Fayetteville, the Ruddles didn’t have much of a budget left to landscape their one-acre site. Chad’s mom got them started with a few plants. Not to be deterred by a challenge, the couple found ways to get free plants and hardscape materials. Sharon joined the online Facebook page, Living in Fabulous Fayetteville, and sent a message to members asking if anyone had free plants to share if the Ruddles came to dig them up. They got 19 responses from their post! Sharon also had success with Facebook plant swap groups in Fayetteville and Peachtree City. She joined the Art of Landscaping Garden Club in Fayetteville where members get a discount at the Art of Landscaping Nursery, and enjoy swapping pass-along plants with fellow gardeners. Now Sharon and Chad’s garden is filled with hostas, Japanese maples, iris, yuccas, liriope and many other varieties of plants. Get It For Free: Hardscape materials, like rocks and bricks, can be expensive. Look for salvaged materials from concrete and landscaping companies. Local companies will often deliver (some free, some for a small fee) broken pieces of concrete or other hardscape materials leftover from other jobs. With the use of a good sledge hammer, you can break up the pieces to fit your designs. Tree companies will often provide shredded hardwood chips from tree removals, at little or no cost, to use as mulch in garden beds. Chad built entire walls, stairs and edging in their garden with salvaged concrete and filled their garden beds with free hardwood mulch! The couple also found vintage bricks that were discarded in the woods and used them to design a beautiful pathway. Tap into Other Gardeners Expertise: Visit with your neighbors, and join a local garden club to meet other gardeners and share plants. Get to know the nursery professionals at your local nursery to get advice, so you don’t make costly mistakes.

The Fayetteville Garden Tour was hosted by Art of Landscaping Garden Club. Club members enjoy monthly meetings with interesting speakers on the first Saturday of the month and receive the added benefit of a discount on plants purchased at Art of Landscaping Nursery in Fayetteville. Southern comfort food is renowned for its rich flavors, hearty ingredients, and the warm memories it evokes. Whether it's a family gathering, a celebration, or simply a desire for a satisfying meal, preparing a southern comfort food feast can be a delightful experience. In this essay, we will explore the essential steps and ingredients required to create a mouthwatering southern comfort food meal that will transport you to the heart of the South.

MAIN DISHES | STEWS | SOUPS | SALADS

To prepare a southern comfort food meal, one must pay attention to the selection of ingredients, the cooking techniques employed, and the overall presentation. By combining traditional recipes with personal touches, a truly authentic and memorable southern comfort food experience can be achieved. Selecting the Right Ingredients:

The foundation of any southern comfort food meal lies in the quality and authenticity of the ingredients used. Opting for fresh, locally sourced produce and highquality meats is crucial. For instance, when preparing a classic dish like fried chicken, using farm-fresh chicken, buttermilk, and a well-seasoned flour mixture will result in a crispy and flavorful delight.

Embracing Traditional Recipes:

Southern comfort food is deeply rooted in tradition, and following time-honored recipes is essential. For example, when making a pot of gumbo, using the "holy trinity" of onions, bell peppers, and celery as a base, along with a dark roux, andouille sausage, and fresh seafood, will create a robust and authentic flavor profile.

Incorporating Regional Flavors:

Southern cuisine is diverse, with each region boasting its own unique flavors. By incorporating regional ingredients and flavors, one can elevate a southern comfort food meal to new heights. For instance, adding a touch of Cajun seasoning to a pot of red beans and rice or using Vidalia onions in a batch of cornbread will infuse the dish with a distinct regional flair.

Mastering Cooking Techniques:

To achieve the desired textures and flavors, mastering the cooking techniques specific to southern comfort food is crucial. For example, slow-cooking collard greens with smoked ham hocks or bacon will result in tender greens with a smoky undertone. Similarly, mastering the art of making a flaky and buttery pie crust is essential when preparing a classic southern pecan pie. Preparing a southern comfort food meal is an art that requires attention to detail, respect for tradition, and a passion for flavor. By selecting the right ingredients, embracing traditional recipes, incorporating regional flavors, and mastering cooking techniques, one can create a truly authentic and memorable southern comfort food experience. So, gather your loved ones, roll up your sleeves, and embark on a culinary journey that will transport you to the heart of the South, one delicious bite at a time.

Canning is a wonderful way to preserve the flavors of the fall harvest and enjoy them throughout the year. It allows you to store fruits, vegetables, and even homemade sauces and jams for an extended period. Here's a general overview of the canning process: Gather your supplies: You'll need canning jars with lids and bands, a large pot for boiling water (canner), a jar lifter, a canning funnel, a ladle, and a clean kitchen towel.

Remove air bubbles: Gently tap the jars on a towelcovered countertop to remove any air bubbles trapped inside. You can also use a non-metallic utensil to release air bubbles. Seal the jars: Wipe the jar rims with a clean, damp cloth to remove any residue. Place the lids on the jars and secure them with the bands, tightening them just until they are snug.

Prepare your produce: Wash and prepare the fruits or vegetables you want to can. Remove any stems, pits, or seeds, and cut them into appropriate sizes for canning.

Process the jars: Place the filled jars in a canner filled with boiling water, making sure they are fully submerged. Process the jars according to the recommended processing time for the specific recipe and altitude. Adjust the processing time if necessary.

Sterilize the jars: Place the jars and lids in a large pot filled with water. Bring it to a boil and let them simmer for about 10 minutes. Keep them in hot water until ready to use.

Remove and cool: After processing, carefully remove the jars from the canner using a jar lifter. Place them on a towel-lined countertop or a cooling rack. Let them cool undisturbed for 12-24 hours.

Prepare the canning liquid: Depending on the recipe, you may need to prepare a syrup, brine, or sauce to pack your produce. Follow the recipe instructions for the specific canning liquid.

Check the seals: Once the jars have cooled, check the seals by pressing down on the center of each lid. If the lid doesn't flex or make a popping sound, the jar is properly sealed. If any jars didn't seal, refrigerate and consume them within a few days.

Fill the jars: Using a canning funnel, carefully pack the prepared produce into the sterilized jars, leaving the recommended headspace (the space between the top of the food and the rim of the jar). Use a ladle to pour the hot canning liquid over the produce, ensuring it covers the food and leaves the appropriate headspace.

Canning Tips

Proper canning techniques are essential for food safety, so it's important to follow tested recipes and guidelines from reputable sources like the National Center for Home Food Preservation or your local agricultural extension office. They can provide detailed instructions and recipes specific to the type of food you want to can. Happy canning!

Organizing your pantry for fall is a great way to ensure you have everything you need for cozy meals and fall baking. Here are some tips to help you get started:

Y O U R

P A N T R Y

Take inventory: Begin by taking stock of what you already have in your pantry. Check expiration dates and discard any expired or stale items. This will give you a clear idea of what you need to restock. Categorize your items: Group similar items together to make it easier to find what you need. For example, create sections for grains, canned goods, baking supplies, spices, snacks, etc. Prioritize fall staples: Identify the fall-specific items you'll be using frequently, such as canned pumpkin, spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, broths, and seasonal baking ingredients. Keep these items easily accessible and within reach Use clear containers: Transfer items like grains, pasta, and snacks into clear, airtight containers. This not only keeps them fresh but also allows you to see what you have at a glance. Label and date: Label your containers with the contents and date of purchase or expiration. This helps you keep track of freshness and prevents confusion. Create a meal plan section: Dedicate a section of your pantry to meal planning. Keep a whiteboard or notepad where you can jot down meal ideas, grocery lists, and upcoming events or gatherings. Utilize vertical space: Install shelves or use stackable organizers to maximize vertical space in your pantry. This allows you to store more items and keeps everything visible and easily accessible. Consider seasonal decorations: If you enjoy adding seasonal touches to your pantry, consider incorporating fall-themed decorations like small pumpkins, autumn-colored dish towels, or labels with fall motifs. Regularly declutter and restock: Make it a habit to declutter and organize your pantry regularly. Take a few minutes each month to assess what needs to be used up or replaced.

Remember, everyone's pantry organization needs may vary, so adapt these tips to suit your space and preferences. An organized pantry will not only make cooking and baking more enjoyable but also save you time and money. Happy organizing! 60 SOUTHERN WOMAN

BLOOM effect THE

By: Deena Attia What is Bloom? Many who have lived in Fayette County for a while may be familiar with the organization. I will scratch the surface of what Bloom does for our community and Georgia. Bloom is a refuge where foster children can find safe, nurturing foster families with the training and support to help them heal free resources like clothing, school supplies, and toys so they can focus on thriving. Bloom began in 1986 as Fayette Youth Protection Homes. Their services and reach have expanded over the years and will grow even more throughout Georgia. Soon, an expansion of their services will reach Rome, GA. Aside from providing foster children with resources, they also recruit, train, and support foster families. The Bloom Closet and the Bloom Closet Express offer a boutique-like shopping experience for the children to get new outfits and supplies. The Bloom Closet Express is the mobile unit they take on the road to serve children throughout Georgia. I stopped in, had a Bloom Closet tour, and saw where the children and families shop for clothes and supplies. I was amazed at the setup of the Closet. Each room is thoughtfully arranged by separate sizes and boy's and girl's clothes. It is a beautifully designed space. I can imagine how the kids must feel walking through the doors and having the chance to pick out their clothes and accessories. It takes a lot of hard work and hours to get the items to fill the Closet and display everything in an extraordinary way. Much work needs to be done to support Bloom, and the volunteers who give their time are much appreciated by the team. 62 SOUTHERN WOMAN

One of the team members I got to know is Stephanie King, a Development Associate. She is a Fayette County lifelong resident and a KSU graduate with a degree focusing on non-profit work. Soon after graduation, she began her career with Bloom. Her everyday work aligns with her mission and values. Stephanie's childhood allowed her to bloom. She was brought up in a loving environment, which is one reason she is passionate about her work. She wants to contribute as much as possible to bring light, love, and a sense of belonging to the kids touched by Bloom's services. As I listened to Stephanie tell me her story of her young life, college, and now her mission with Bloom, I saw the light inside her and her enthusiasm when she spoke of what the organization provides for children and foster families. Her excitement about helping others is contagious. After I met with Stephanie, I wanted to volunteer. Soon after, I was on the website signing up to contribute to the Bloom Garden. The Bloom Garden is a monthly donation that provides the children's basic needs in foster care. One evening after work, I joined other volunteers packing backpacks for a recent back-to-school event. I helped sort items for the upcoming Frocks and Rocks event. There are plenty of opportunities and flexible timing when it comes to volunteering. Stephanie says, "The best way to get involved and inspired to volunteer or contribute is to attend an event." I fully agree. It's impossible to attend one of Bloom's events and not get caught up in the mission and goal. Bloom's mission is to empower Georgia's families and communities to transform the lives of children impacted by foster care. Bloom works to raise awareness in the community about the needs of foster children and enlist the community's help to assist foster children in whatever way possible. If you meet Stephanie and have the chance to hear the excitement in her voice and see her face light up when she talks about her work, you, too, will feel compelled to contribute. Bloom is about helping our young people have a better start in life. Stephanie and the team's work to bring awareness to the cause and help children and families is a labor of love. There are 11,000 children in Georgia's foster care system. The children may only have time to pack a plastic bag with some of their belongings before leaving home and being taken to a foster family. That is why the Bloom Closet, and the Bloom Closet Express are available to bring dignity back into their lives. It's like a high-end boutique with a bright and vibrant environment and stylish clothes, shoes, and accessories carefully laid out to be taken home.

NOV | DEC

November and December is the season for the Angel Tree. Individuals, corporations, churches, civic groups, etc., collect toys and gifts for Bloom families and those served in the Bloom Closet. Stay tuned for more information on the website by early October.

APRIL 27

The highlight of each year is the Bloom Ball, and for 2024, it will take place on April 27, and for the first time, it will be at the Georgia Aquarium. To learn more about Bloom, check out the website bloomouryouth.org.

Becky Davenport, CEO of Bloom, would like everyone to know the organization's impact: “Bloom has been serving our community of foster kids and families for over 30 years. The work we do at Bloom sets the tone for how Foster youth should be seen as individuals and not just numbers in the system. On any given day there are more than ten thousand innocent children in Georgia’s foster care system.” “These children are removed from their homes through no fault of their own. Bloom empowers and supports all populations of foster children in Georgia including children with significant therapeutic needs, pregnant or parenting Foster teens, those experiencing family crisis and those at risk of entering foster care. These children experience significant trauma and Bloom exists to help them make the transition into foster care less traumatic.”

Ninety percent of children enter the foster care system with nothing but the clothes on their backs. This lack of clothing and basic supplies sends caseworkers and foster parents scrambling instead of being able to focus on the children and help them heal from their trauma. Based on surveys Bloom knows that when children feel self-confident and prepared they perform better in school. This month Bloom hosts its tenth annual Frocks & Rocks Charity Fashion Show at The Newnan Centre in Newnan, Georgia. Three hundred ladies are expected to attend this popular fashion party that connects women with local boutiques, shops and vendors, all while supporting The Bloom Closet. The 2023 Frocks & Rocks event is presented by Southern Woman. Boutiques such as Lizard Thicket, Darling Divas, Pink Chair and Tribal Chick, as well as other Fayette and Coweta County businesses will provide the runway fashions. The event also includes games, an exciting live auction, and an incredible silent auction supported by Fayetteville, Peachtree City and Newnan businesses.

RETAILERS AT Frocks & Rocks LIZARD THICKET The Peachtree City Lizard Thicket is managed by Carly Isaacson, a longtime supporter of Bloom's work. Carly greatly admires Bloom's unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of foster parents. She recognizes the organization’s dedication to alleviating potential stressors these parents might face. She loves how Bloom makes accessing essentials for foster children, such as bikes and toys, effortless and straightforward. She understands that this seamless support system not only benefits the children but also helps foster parents create a nurturing environment with ease. What's her favorite part about Frocks & Rocks? That's easy: the Live Auction. She says that the busy activity gets all the guests super excited. When the bidding starts, it's like a big party!

DARLING DIVAS Dana Peters, owner of Darling Divas, deeply appreciates the meaningful influence of Bloom's work, which holds a special place in her heart for a sincere reason. Her father's upbringing within New York's foster care system has sensitized her to the critical importance of organizations like Bloom. Witnessing the dedicated efforts that Bloom invests in every child under its care truly inspires Dana. The organization's commitment to providing not only support, but also a foundation of structure, essential resources, and the invaluable experience of being embraced by affectionate and nurturing foster parents is nothing short of awe-inspiring! Seeing a united community rally behind the children during Frocks & Rocks is also heartwarming for her. The sight of a room filled with remarkable women, wholeheartedly committed to making a positive difference in the lives of these young ones, creates an atmosphere that is both inspiring and humbling. The mutual support among boutique owners as they cheer each other on to support this exceptional cause adds an extra layer of warmth and gratitude to the event!

Tribal Chick is owned by Jamie Georgia, who has also served on the Bloom Board of Directors. She was a member of the interior design team for The Bloom Closet and has even fostered children. Through the years, she has seen the difference Bloom makes in the lives of children in our community and across the state. She has witnessed the incredible impact and positive imprint made in the lives of many children through Bloom. Her favorite part of Frocks & Rocks is two-fold. Tribal Chick is not only a retail store but also a style team. She thoroughly enjoys creating one-of-a-kind outfits exclusively for Frocks & Rocks to elevate the experience and expresses how profound it is to be surrounded by countless women coming together in support of Bloom.

PINK CHAIR Brittany Simmons, owner of Pink Chair, joined the Frocks & Rocks party in 2019! Brittany has a heart for helping children in need and was originally introduced to Bloom through her cousin and previous Bloom Board Member, Melanie Denney-Haas. She learned about the organization through this connection and fell in love with Bloom’s mission. Her favorite part of the event is seeing everyone rally together during Frocks & Rocks to raise money for The Bloom Closet. She loves seeing a room full of ladies coming together in support of Bloom. It's inspiring for her. She also loves the fashion show and believes it’s a blast for everyone!

THE NEWNAN LIZARD THICKET The Newnan Lizard Thicket is owned by sisters Ashley Bedosky and Amanda Harril, longtime supporters of Bloom. Amanda had always been amazed at what Bloom does for the children in care, but it wasn’t until she became a Bloom foster parent herself that she became aware and truly understood what Bloom does for their foster families. From the children in care and even the children already in a foster home, Bloom takes care of EVERYONE! The organization played an invaluable role in Amanda’s decision to adopt the three beautiful girls she fostered. Ashley agrees that Bloom’s support and guidance were instrumental in her nieces’ adoption process. shley and Amanda greatly enjoy Frocks & Rocks! Their favorite part is A seeing everyone come together to support and honor the children and Bloom as an organization. They cherish the numerous fun styles seen throughout the fashion show, but the live auction is a thrill! They revel in the high energy that surrounds the event. Being able to witness how much money can be raised in one afternoon is extraordinary for them!
