CONTRIBUTORS

Hailey Faria featured contributor Hi friend. I’m Hailey - a mother of two, wife of a US Marine and a music lover photographer. I have been shooting since I was nine (the story is). I remember propping my younger sister up against the bed, with the comforter behind her and 3 teddy bears. It was fabulous - mother should of known then what I wanted to be when I grew up. HA! Clearly I wasn’t a prodigy..so I went on to be a pharmacy technician with Target for many years while going to school for Business. Continuing college didn’t fit into our journey upon arrival to Hawaii and that is when it all changed for me. I dedicated every ounce of my being to this craft and I can truly say that I don’t know what I am going to do one day when my hands can no longer hold a camera. I have met the most remarkable people through this trade, heard so many stories, shared so many milestones..photography truly completes me.

OUR MISSION Here at Beauty & Lifestyle Mommy magazine headquarters, we are mothers first and then we are editors. The pages of every magazine and every post on our website have been inspired by the hearts of real women, whether it be inspired by our own journey of motherhood, the stories our readers in our community share, or even those who have traveled the road of motherhood before us. Our mission for the publication and community of mothers is what we would desire in a publication ourselves. We want to inspire you to embrace the beauty of pregnancy, to empower you to birth without fear, and to equipt you with inspiration and tools to parent with not perfection, but purpose. In a society that diminishes the role of a mother, we believe the role should be celebrated and honored everyday for what it stands for. “In life your greatest purpose may not be what you do but who you raise”, our editor’s well worn quote. We believe that the mothers role is the central core of society and community. The most important journey you will ever travel and that parenting with purpose means choosing to parent with intention by creating a meaningful filled upraising for your children. Dive in, share your story with us and join our community of mothers who celebrate each other!

I

t is the most favorite time of the year - OK, well at least it’s my favorite! There is nothing I love more than walking outside my back porch, curling up to a warm cup of coffee in the early morning and feeling the crisp breeze of fall. I’ll be honest with you this volume has so much of my heart in it, because our own family one day hopes to adopt a little one to complete our home. I am honored intriduce you to two wonderful families who added to their home through adoption, one here in the States and one by overseas adoption. My hope by sharing these stories more families open their doors to fostering or adopting. There is an incredible need in the world for couples to open their homes and hearts to children around who go to bed alone, hungry, and without someone to love them.

Perhaps, you aren’t in the position to adopt or foster but you might be moved to donate to a local foster home or adoption agency, even one pair of little shoes makes a difference ina child’s life. As in every volume, we share with you ways to create meaningful memories with your little ones and as this season we dive into a berry adventure and homemade jam making recipes. My little ones can atest that the recipes are delicious! We’ve used our own homemade jams on pancakes, toast, and Pbjs but the fun was in the adveture. Finding a local berry farm and going on a picking adveture, then spending time in the kitchen going through the jam making process, OH how I have to warn you that you’ll end up with sticky children and perhaps sticky walls ! I invite you to join us on November 15th as we launch a brand new community for mothers on our website and our 10th annivarsary volume. Now, enjoy the volume and remember to enjoy the season!

Adopting Lola

WITH KRISTIN HICKMAN

o

ur adoption story started 18 years ago when I was a Nanny in the South of France. The family I was placed with had 6 children and their youngest daughter was adopted from the Canary Islands. Her story touched me. I had a very special experience with them and that was where the original desire to adopt a child came from. A few years later I met my future husband Chris, the love of my life. We got married and started our family, I had told my husband that adoption was something that I was very open to and hoping would be another way would expand our family. He had never really thought about it, but to my excitement‌..Chris thought it was a great way to expand our family. Life went on we had two children, Liam (March, 2004) and Alizay (March, 2006) and we were busy settling our cattle ranch and expanding it near Lashburn, Saskatchewan. But something was pulling at my heart, urging me that it was time to start looking into adoption. So we began the process in April 2008, first researching countries and then finding an agency to work with, then a social worker, etc. It took us 5 months to put together our dossier and all the proper paperwork we needed. This information package included a series of home visits from the social worker, medicals, family histories, criminal record checks, etc. Finally in November 2008 our file was approved and in Ethiopia waiting for a referral. At first we were told we would only wait probably 2 - 8 months for a referral, but that time kept extending longer and longer. During our adoption process we had a big surprise, I was expecting again, Ruby was born in January 2010. Our file was put on hold for about a year while we updated our dossier and we thought we should let Ruby get to a year old before another baby was brought home. Still more waiting, waiting and waiting! It consumed me, it was all I could think about, I had dreams about her, meeting and holding her, and joined online chat groups of other waiting families, all of us wondering and waiting for that phone call or email. Well an email came but it was devastating, we were told that our agency would no longer be able to stay open due to financial struggles and that the doors to the Foster Home in Ethiopia would close. I cried and cried! I couldn’t believe after all this time waiting, our dreams would not be happening. Our adoption agency (CAFAC) is Manitoba based, and due to the time it was taking to adopt children, they did not have enough funds to keep the foster home running. I wrote a letter to a Saskatchewan minister who happened to be a family friend and local Lashburn farmer before his time in Politics.

Adoption has been the most extraordinary gift to our family. It has opened our small town eyes to the big beautiful world we live in. It has also opened our minds to endless possibilities. Our biological children all speak of adopting, and we believe they are going to be better people because of bringing Lola Dinkenesh into our lives.

He quickly got in touch with some folks in the Manitoba government. The Manitoba government agreed to subsidize CAFAC in order to get the remaining children in the foster home permanent placement. It was a miracle. Then just days later we receive a new email that a retired couple, a doctor and his wife who had been the founders of the agency were coming back to run it and match the families waiting. We were so relieved, I think around that time we were told that we were just 2nd or 3rd from the top of the list! We were so excited and I tell you my heart jumped every time the phone rang. On August 9th, 2012, we received the phone call, we have a match! I quickly opened my email to gaze on a photo of the most beautiful little angel, Dinkenesh. She was just 2 months old, I stared and stared at that first photo, memorizing every little sweet detail. A few months later we received news of our court date in Ethiopia on November 16th, so I was busy packing and booking tickets. Off we went, I cannot even describe how much emotion and excitement we were feeling, and the anticipation was crazy! It took us 18 hours of flying time but we had arrived in Addis Ababa around 8am! We were picked up at the airport and told, they would take us to the guest house to drop off our things and to quickly get ready because they would be taking us to the Foster home to meet our children. The fact that we hadn’t slept in days didn’t at all matter. We were so excited. I can remember that morning like yesterday. I am so grateful for photos and videos of those first moments meeting our daughter, it was like an out of body experience, love at first site for us. Lola wasn’t so sure though, it took Lola about a week to trust us, and even longer to fully commit to a good cuddle. She was very well cared for in the foster home and missed her primary caregiver very much. We couldn’t believe how tiny and precious and perfect she was! She cried and then fell asleep in my arms, the moment I had dreamt of for the last 5 years was happening! We spent two weeks in Ethiopia visiting the country and trying to take in what we could of the culture. It was very different from the farm in Saskatchewan. They are a very impoverished people. Life is very hard. Even being there was stressful for us. The Ethiopian people are a very wonderful and generous people, even though they have nothing to give. We still call many of them friends to this day. Our two drivers Getu and Ketema we will never forget. We hope to visit them one day soon. We went to the foster home everyday to visit Lola, but after two weeks we had to say our goodbye’s we weren’t able to bring her home yet. We had to wait for approval from their government and then her passport and visa for her to enter Canada. On March 1st, 2013, we went back to Ethiopia to bring her home, and on March 10th we arrived home. We gave her the first name Lola, and used her given name Dinkenesh (which means “you are wonderful”) as her middle name. We were welcomed at the airport by both sets of grandparents, two great grandmas, uncles, aunts cousins and close friends. It was so overwhelming and touching, from day one she has been loved so deeply by her huge family! And right from the start her bond with her 3 siblings was so special, each one of them have a very special bond with her. Lola and Ruby are the closest though with them just being 2 years apart, they also share a room together. Just the other night, they were cuddled up together in one bed and when I asked why, Lola said Ruby just wanted me to tickle her back! Thanks for taking the time to listen to our story. Adopting

Emberlynn WITH ADRIA LEA

E

mberlynn came to my family at only 8 weeks old as mine and my husband’s second foster child. We had never had a baby and were slightly terrified. Aside from being so tiny, she had experienced a traumatic injury in which originally doctors weren’t even sure wether she would live. When we got the call, we knew we were the home for her, and I went to the hospital to stay with her and give snuggles until she was able to go home with us the next day. Miraculously, she was seemingly okay, and we quickly fell in love with her. This was our first baby and it melted my heart to see my husband hold her on his chest. She wasn’t his, but you wouldn’t know it. Life became so busy and we had two other foster kids at the time that had major needs of their own, so I went into a bit of a survival, robot mode. I knew exactly what needed to be done to care for her, so I did it; I quit relying on anyone, especially God for help. We were told that her status had been changed to adoption by a non-relative (us), and I was finally able to relax. Our sweet, precious baby was finally going to be ours! We already saw her that way, but it is impossible to describe the feeling as a foster parent of knowing that everything can still change. And then it did. In the blink of an eye, a new person of interest for her was presented to CPS and they wanted to make this placement happen. I was terrified. How would they be able to care for her high medical needs? How could I lose my baby girl? This period was the darkest time in my life to date. All at once, my husband lost his job, we had to move out of our house, and we thought we were going to lose our baby girl. The placement was proven to not be in our daughter’s best interest, but CPS was still pushing for it. I almost broke. I was angry with God and I didn’t want to let go of control. How could He even be letting all of this happen? I spent days on the floor in the shower crying out to Him, begging Him to allow us the honor to be her parents, all while still refusing to let go. In looking back, I can now see that God was working His way in some mighty, incredible ways. One day, I finally gave up, and gave it to God. I couldn’t physically or emotionally carry it any more. He gave me a peace about the situation, and then we watched as he worked a miracle right before our eyes.

The placement fell through, and we were going to be adopting our daughter! A very long four months later, and adoption day arrived. It still doesn’t seem real, six months later, but God wasn’t finished working on her. Since last October, she has dropped specialists one by one as some of her medical issues began to resolve themselves through hard work and therapy. Her therapy appointments began to wean down, and continue to do so. Just this last month, her g-tube came out and she is fully eating by mouth, and behaving as any normal almost two year old would! You might notice a little waddle in her step, but it just makes her oh-so adorable. I imagine she will outgrow that as well, but it’s also okay if she isn’t the next big track star (like her mom). We have watched God’s miracles one after another be played out in her life, and we know God has a MIGHTY plan for her. When trying to describe the joy that she has brought to our lives, I can’t even begin. She is special. So, so very special. She is a charmer, and she is sweet, and stubborn. You can see how her attitude for life has already brought her so far. We can’t go anywhere without people stopping us to talk about her and her smile and her demeanor. She is a lover of life. We are beyond blessed to be called her parents, and don’t take one day for granted with our little miracle.

My husband and I are asked all the time how we can keep doing this. “How do you keep fostering, knowing they can go back? I could never do it, it would hurt too much.” To all of you who may feel that way, I do believe that foster care is a calling. It is hard and messy, and also beautiful. We see children who have been dealt the worst hand in life be transformed by the love a foster home can give. My husband and I tell each other that to say that we couldn’t do it would be to look at these children in their eyes and tell them they aren’t worth the sacrifice. And oh, they are. You might even be surprised how much they will change you in the end. - Adria Lea Photography

QUICK 5-STEP BEAUTY LOOK As soon as the weather cools and you begin to spend more time outside with your little ones, spend more time sipping coffee at your favorite cafe with your mommy friends, and perhaps even sneaking out on more date nights, so having an easy goto look for fall is a must.

FAVORITE FALL 2017 POLISHES 1. ESSIE knee high life 2. 0PI aurora 3. ESSIE mix taupe 4 OPI icelanded a bottle 5. ESSIE dressed nineties

1 1

FACE: Apply a tinted moisturizer but keep it light. Then tap and blend concealer under the eye and onto the eyelid to neutralize under eye. You know that mama, no sleep under eye.

FACE: for a pop of color, tap warm, peachy cream blush onto the apple of the cheeks. Don’t add too much, just a subtle hint of color is good.

3

Braid all the way down, but secure your hair lower and loser than you would if you wanted a nice, tight braid for a workout. Loose is perfect and if little pieces don’t secure, it is okay.

3

4

LIPS: The final touch is a fall lip gloss or lipstick color. Berry or a warm fall nude will complete your quick 15-minute makeup look.

5

2

Start to pull the hair apart, creating the messy look. Just pinch each braid level and pull apart a little at a time, making it loose and undone.

Tease some hair loose around the crown of your head to frame your face and pick out your favorite hair accessories to add.

EYES: Glide a taupe eye shadow crayon or liner brush dipped in shadow from inner corners out, says Faythe Eloise. Using a deep taupe vs. black gives this look a more natural smudge.

EYES: Repeat step 1 on the bottom. And then connect the lines at the outer corners of your eyes. Use a blending brush to bring shadow up to crease, diffusing with a back-andforth motion. Then add your favorite mascara.

5

2

Start out with your hair down, no need to brush it out if you have curly hair or a little wavy. This is perfect for us mothers who don’t have time to brush out our hair. Gather your hair into a french braid, starting at the midback of your head.

4

If you want to really hold it in place, use some hairspray. If not, embrace the mess, and you’re good to go! There you have it! In five minutes you can look put together and ready for the rest of your day. This braid can save you time getting ready, and allow you to feel energized and confident mama!

From the moment you find out your expecting all you want is the best of the best for your sweet little baby from that moment on until forever. Food for me was a big part of pregnancy, my breastfeeding days and at the time we started feeding our first “real” foods. I ate some of the best food of my life during my first pregnancy because I lived in San Francisco and worked at the Ferry Building and a 5 star restaurant, sincerely it was a dream! When it came time to start feeding my first I was admit I was going to be making everything for her, and for the most part I did. I was so thrilled when I saw my wonderful client starting up a little food blog called Tiny Taste Budz for all the insanely appetizing purees she was making for her little guy Christian. Stephanie completely knocks it out of the park with what she is making in ways of purees. Her tiny (not so tiny) guy gets a steak dinner that is fit for a king but just right for his needs. When I spent the morning with the duo Christen just couldn’t keep his hands off the food and was clamoring for more. They are picturesque and delicious; I may have had a little lick from my finger when I was prepping the shots.

J: What is your favorite recipe to date? S: I taste everything I make him and so far my personal favorite has been my sous vide pork with olive oil, sage, roasted sweet potato and apple with cinnamon. It’s SO GOOD. Comfort food for your baby is what I like to call it. J: What has been the biggest hit? S: Christian absolutely loves my banana and Avocado puree. It’s so simple and not super fancy but he can’t stop eating it. I use it as a “dessert” after his other purees. J: Did you have a passion for cooking before becoming a parent? S: Food is a big part of mine and my husbands life so even before I had a baby we always cooked, tried new things, traveled to places just to try restaurants. After having Christian is became really important to me to pass that love of food to him. J: What made you want to start Tiny Taste Budz? S: I stared Tiny Taste Budz because a few people had stared asking me for my recipes that I had been posting. Saying they never thought of this combo or that combo or that babies could experience spices and herbs at such a young age. I have grown to love cooking for him and trying new things and I really wanted to share that with people. I would love to write a baby food cook book or hold tutorials or even do private cooking for moms who simply don’t have the time but want to give their babies the best and have them try exciting food combos. J: What are you looking forward to making for Christian? S: I really look forward to introducing him to veal. I have been working on a recipe with veal & fig...I think he’s going to love it!

SALMON, STRAWBERRY, PEACH AND BASIL 4-5 OZ PIECE WILD SALMON
 3 ORGANIC DONUT PEACHES
 5 ORGANIC STRAWBERRIES • •

Pit and cut up the peaches. Roast the salmon and the peaches in the oven for about 15 minutes. Remove the salmon from the skin and place in your blender or processor along with the peaches and the strawberries. Add water in 1/4 cup increments until you have reached your desired consistency.

• •

BROCCOLI, APPLE, SPINACH, AND GINGER 2 ORGANIC APPLES
CUP AND A HALF OF PACKED ORGANIC BABY SPINACH
ABOUT A CUP OF BROCCOLI (I USED ORGANIC FROZEN) CHOP AND CORE APPLE. I LEFT THE SKIN ON FOR ADDED TEXTURE BUT YOU CAN PEEL IF YOU PREFER. • • • •

Put the chopped apple in the basket of your steamer above a few inches of boiling water and cover. Let it cook for 5 min. Add broccoli and spinach to the top and cook covered for an additional 3 min. Add all ingredients along with the ginger to you mixer or blender.

I start with one ladle of the water from the steamer at a time until I reach my desired consistency. Boom!! Super healthy... packed with vitamins and fiber and iron and your babe will hopefully love it!

KALE, SPINACH, KIWI, PLUM, BLUEBERRY AND CILANTRO This puree is as pretty as is it is nutritious and delicious!! The vibrant purple/red color of this puree masks the fiber, foliate, vitamin rich greens that are packed in! 3 PIECES OF ORGANIC KALE 2 ORGANIC PLUMS HANDFUL OF ORGANIC BABY SPINACH
 1/2 CUP ORGANIC BLUEBERRIES
 3 ORGANIC KIWI’S
ORGANIC CILANTRO • • • • •

Start by bringing a few inches of water to a boil under a steamer basket. First add the chopped kale then the plum. Steam covered for about 5 minutes. Add the spinach and blueberries and steam for an additional 3 minutes. Place the kiwi and cilantro in your processor or blender then add the rest of the ingredients. Puree until smooth.

This puree is a bit on the thinner side so I suggest adding it to yogurt or adding some cereal to it.You could also add it to a simple apple puree to thicken it up.

SIRLOIN, SWEET POTATO, AND COCONUT MILK I’m a steak and potatoes kind of girl...and who doesn’t love a sweet potato with sour cream?? So this is my healthy, happy, baby play on it. The coconut milk adds creaminess to the puree as well as good fat and nutrients! 8OZ SIRLOIN
 2 ORGANIC SWEET POTATOES
1/2 CUP ORGANIC CANNED FULL FAT COCONUT MILK
 1-CUP ORGANIC BEEF BROTH
 PINCH OF DRIED THYME

• • • • • •

Bring the cup of beef broth to a boil. Add the peeled chopped sweet potatoes and the sirloin cubes to the saucepan along with the thyme. Cook covered for 15/20 min on medium heat or until your meat is just cooked thru. Do not over cook! I then removed the beef and pureed it on its own then added the carrots and the broth from the pot. After it’s blended add the ½-cup of coconut milk and continue to puree. The coconut milk instantly smoothed this puree out. I didn’t have to add any additional liquid.

I made 22 oz. from this recipe for my little one!

I love jams especially homemade ones. Making a jam at home is very easy and it tastes especially better than store bought ones, which are loaded with preservatives. My grandfather used to prepare variety of jams using seasonal vegetables or fruits at home. Some of my fondest memories are of him and his crazy canning and pickling experiments. Those precious memories of Grandpa Hall are shared with my siblings. Memories of hot Florida days picking fruits and veggies from his backyard garden and watching him turn them into different things. This time I tried my hands with strawberries! Try to make this strawberry jam when strawberries are in season and I am sure you and your little ones will love it! How to select the perfect strawberries: Look for strawberry fruit with the skin not bruised, no visible cuts and leaves with nice green color. Choose ripe and organic strawberries for best results in your jams.

Strawberries are loaded with Vitamin C and antioxidants which makes a great healthy food for babies, toddlers and kids. It’s also apt to consume strawberries during winters. Strawberries are one of the potential allergens hence its recommended to introduce strawberry for babies during 10-12 months age. Recent studies are suggesting to introduce allergen foods sooner, hence consult with your doctor about doing the same. When you introduce, you can offer mashed strawberries or cut tiny pieces of strawberries as finger foods. The tiny seeds of the strawberries are completely edible, so it’s not necessary to remove the seeds, but buying organic strawberries is highly recommended.

Have your kids measure and add all the ingredients to the blender or have them stir in the chia seeds. If your family is new to chia seeds, no they are not from the 90’s friendly chia pets lol, they are tiny black seeds native to South America and are a great source of protein, fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids. In our house, we call them “energy seeds”, which gets the kids excited to add them to their smoothies and sprinkle them on oatmeal in the morning, it is a pantry must-have at the Hall’s home.

Our story is a complicated one. We decided based on age that it was a good time to start trying to have a baby. We became pregnant on the first try and then after a stint in the ER for a gallbladder attack at 10 weeks along were told we were having twins. The shock of learning that not only were we pregnant, but expecting twins was hard to overcome. I wasn’t sure that i would be able to handle that large of a change. Life works in mysterious ways and when things started getting difficult with the pregnancy I realized there was no one I wanted more than my twin girls. Identical twins are notorious for being challenging in pregnancy and we were told that early on. From almost immediate bed rest to multiple hospitalizations we struggled to maintain a positive attitude. Aly was the larger of the twins and seemed to be thriving. Emma was smaller and struggling to gain weight. During an ultrasound at 25 weeks we were told that Aly had passed away (later we found out it was from a freak bloodclot in her umbilical cord). The doctor and ourselves were shocked that the seemingly thriving twin was the one taken. The decision was made almost immediately that Emma had to come out as well since the girls were identical and shared a blood source. Emma was born crying (a shock to the doctors due to how premature she was) and a tiny one pound. We were grateful to spend just two weeks with her and still treasure every second we had. Aly and Emma taught me that a pain exists that is deeper, harder, and more severe than most people will ever get to experience in life. The magnitude of love I felt after they were born and then the pain felt after they were lost seemed to be mirrored halves. Though that amount of pain has lessened with time, the heartbreak never seems to fully heal. After a loss that significant we realized how desperately we wanted to be parents.

Several weeks after losing the girls I had a dream that I was playing in a field with a beautiful blonde hair, blue eyed little girl whom I called Ellie. When I woke up I knew that she would be here and that her sisters would be looking out for her. Ellie was a special name for the reason that it came to me in a dream and also that it was a combination of Emma and Aly, her big sisters’ names. Almost two years later little Ellie came screaming into the world and fulfilled our lives in a way we didn’t think was possible. She is all personality, friendly to everyone she meets, and fills joy in all of our hearts. Ellie taught me how to love in a way I never thought would be possible again after losing Aly and Emma and showed me that even though her sisters are not here with her physical they live on every day in her spirit.

Motherhood has made me see the world and myself in a new way. You realize what you are capable of and how special family is. T WO, T H R E E , FOUR OR MORE!

GROWING YOUR FAMILY It is true that each time you add another child, there is going to be added stress and more work on the family. But, the good news is that with each child you have they will enhance the family, and adding double or triple the giggles, surprises, stories, and most of all, the LOVE! by The American Pregnancy Association

It is true that each time you add another child, there is going to be added stress and more work on the family. But, the good news is that with each child you have they will enhance the family, and adding double or triple the giggles, surprises, stories, and most of all, the LOVE!

2. Use a baby doll to help them to understand the newborn care. Pregnancy is a great time to introduce your little ones to activities necessary for taking care of the newborn, including breastfeeding, diaper changes and the attention they will require. By using a baby doll to demonstrate to your little ones what will be be happening before baby arrives, you can help them to take on the role of “mommy’s little helper.” This could mean getting you a diaper and wipes, a snack while breastfeeding, and so much more!

To help you prepare to go from a family of three to four or more, we have some great information to help this be a smooth and happy transition for everyone! DURING PREGNANCY There is nothing as special as the moment when you find out that you are growing your family. Then, your toddler walks in with his strong personality, owning the room, and you quickly realize that his world is going to change tremendously. We highly recommend preparing your child for their coming sibling early in pregnancy by involving them in the process. 1. Announce their older sibling status in a fun and exciting way. “We created a family story book that talked about how our daughter was becoming a big sister. When we got to the end of the book, and we said “Mommy has a baby in her belly that is going to be your baby brother,” she immediately took on the role of big sister.” -Janie Finding a special way of announcing the pregnancy and sibling status to your little ones will help them to begin to bond with their sister or brother. Telling them early also allows them to see the amazing beauty of pregnancy and how their mother’s body grows to carry and nourish a baby. During pregnancy, you can also have your little ones rest their ear to the belly to hear the heartbeat, read a book to the baby, and of course, feel the baby’s kicks.

3. Picking a name. It may sound crazy to let your little one pick out the name for their sibling, but having them be a part of the process is a great way for them to continue to be excited for the arrival of the sibling. You can also consider soliciting some hilarious options from them as well for a good laugh! THE BIRTH 1. Early Labor The involvement of children in labor and birth can be such a special moment. For example, the recent story of the 12 year old being a part of delivering her mom’s baby is incredible! Of course, there are age appropriate ways that children can participate in the birth that can allow them to feel included in the growth of the family. Early labor is a great time to let little ones spend some time with mom and be a part of the birth process before things pick up. Not to mention that your little ones can be a great distraction during early labor to help you ignore those contractions for as long as possible. Of course, you will want to ensure that you have care lined up for when labor does pick up!

2. Following the birth One of the most cherished memories you will have, in addition to each of your children’s birth, will be the moment your little ones meet their newborn sibling. It is the greatest joy to see the love a child can have for their new sibling. This is also a great time to have a photographer join the family during the introductions in the hospital, birth center, or home to capture these precious moments that you will forever cherish. POSTPARTUM Once you are home, the reality of your growing family sets in as your newborn is hungry and your other little(s) are wanting for your attention too. We highly recommend as a new mother (yes, you are a new mother each time your family grows) in preparing for this postpartum period during your pregnancy!

2. Meal Train One of the best inventions has been the meal train website that allows individuals to bring new families meals. The last thing a new mom wants to worry about with littles running around and a new baby on the hip is making dinner. Ask a family member or friend to create this free service for you following the birth of the baby with your requested details of days, time, and restrictions to help ease you into becoming a mom of two, three, or more!

1. Postpartum Plan So often, we hear about the importance of creating birth plans, but do you have a plan for after the birth? When creating a plan, a few things you should include are your needs and self care, meals, visitors, and the schedule of your little ones.

3. Have a schedule for the other siblings Ask friends and family members to plan activities and outings with your other little ones of things they enjoy most. After giving birth, you will need to recover as well as establish a breastfeeding routine with the baby. Having someone to take the kids out can help to create a relaxing environment to do just this. It is important for you to spend time with each of your children as well. This can seem overwhelming with a newborn, but by planning an hour for each child at least once a week gives you and your littles something special to look forward to.

For a great postpartum plan template, visit americanpregnancy.org/postpartumplan to download today!

4. Add a Postpartum Doula to your baby registry A postpartum doula is there to help a

new family in those first days and weeks after bringing home a new baby. Research shows that having a postpartum doula helps moms, dads, and babies have an easier time with this transition, even more so when the family is expanding. The postpartum doula is a great member to add to the team, even for a short period, to allow the family to spend quality time together and bond as a new family. Postpartum doulas will cook nourishing meals, help with basic cleaning, such as laundry and dishes, and provide care for the new mom to ensure she is rested and well.

SO OFTEN, WE HEAR ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF CREATING BIRTH PLANS, BUT DO YOU HAVE A PLAN FOR AFTER BIRTH?

As you grow your family, there will be challenging days of course, but most of all your family will experience the most amazing days as a new, larger family. Remember, the most important thing to do is enjoy each moment because they fly by so fast. If you ever feel overwhelmed, or feel like you can’t handle it all anymore, please call us on our Helpline at 1-800672-2296, we believe no mother should feel alone and can provide you with a referral to local services.

n e w y o r k jessica elbar photography I am a studio light portrait photographer specializing in newborns, children and maternity in NYC and surrounding areas.
