UNIT 7 CITY IN PIECES GROUP 1 Tutors: Amita Kulkarni Vikrant Tike Group: Ekaterina Limonova Filipe Battazza Moataz Ibrahim Shivang Bansal
A story of balance A study of equilibrium An equation of urban condition A deviation from the horizontal A way to find level A study of visual and physical forces
An observation in East London the diverse elements within the cityscape, the graffiti on the walls, the contrast between different communities and the shadows of urban progression. we found the equilibrium shifting towards an unequal society where a few would dominate the wealth of many.
‘There is always hope’ she said .
The city changed, the buildings became taller, the rich bought more and more and the rest were left with none. The Africans moved, the Turkish left, the hipsters turned into something else . The square remains but the shift has happened, there is no horizontal, no movement, no play.

The object of imbalance is a device that relies on the unequal situation. A device where the pivot is displaced and where we need many to carry the force for one. with a hand one side and the cityscape marked on the other, the device depicts the future urban situation that will happen in London 2029.
Studying forces of equilibrium and movement we tested several different design solutions.

Through a process of CNC fabrication we made the entire piece out of a single plywood sheet material. the piece was also designed such that it can be easily carried by four of us and assembled on site within a few minutes.

After testing outside the AA we located the piece at Gillet square drawing people to interact with it, touch it and play it. Gillett square, sits within Dalston. It fascinated us as it was a blend of the new and the old, where difference could meet, events could happen and possibilities foreseen.
