December 2016 A Monthly Newsletter of First Baptist Church
Covenant Ministries of Franklinton Members of First Baptist Franklinton have continued to be involved in so many Godglorifying ministries that I seldom speak of just one in my monthly Bridge article. There is a new ministry beginning here in Franklinton with the potential to exalt Christ by giving men in addiction recovery the next link in their journey toward Christ empowered independent living. About a year and a half ago, I was blessed to visit the Home of Grace, a Christ-centered ninety-day, residential addiction recovery program. It was incredible to hear men share how the counseling, accountability, and God’s Word had brought healing to them. We listened to testimonies of those graduating the program and saw parents, wives, and children so hopeful that this would be a turning point in the lives of the graduates. As we drove back to Franklinton, one of the guys in the van began to share the challenges these men would face as they came home. He spoke of several young people from our area that had graduated, returned home, and fallen back into the trap of addiction. They came back clean and equipped, but they were not part of a church, had little structure and support, and quickly fell back into the same patterns that led to their addiction. We began to discuss what could be done
to help. It was out of these and many other Since the formulation of the mission statediscussions and prayers that the vision for ment, the Covenant Ministries of Franklinton has seen many blessings. How blessed is the man The following is one of many Biblical prescriptions for a life that is blessed or happy. That does not mean, of course, that there will never be challenging circumstances. It does mean, however, if one walks in faithful obedience to God’s word, that person will be choosing a pattern for life that will result in peaceful stability, regardless of the “bumps in the road.”
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly To whose wisdom do we listen? Consider your banker, other financial advisers, doctors, lawyer, insurance or real estate broker, friends, or others. Do they advise you from the full counsel of God’s word or the philosophies of this world? We should be very careful. The world operates by sight; the Believer walks by faith. The wisdom of man never accomplishes the purposes of God.
Nor stands in the path of sinners There are certainly in our culture many places to go and events in which we could participate for entertainment, but many of them would be questionable for anyone desiring to live a holy life to the glory of God. I could point to specific examples of which I am personally aware where some who have been in church on Sunday were dabbling in worldliness on the night before or the day after. It is true, of course, that Jesus hung out with sinners all the time, but He did so to call them to repentance and reconciliation with God. May I pose a couple of questions? Are we willing to submit the entirety of our lives, including the places we go and the activities we choose, to the light of God’s Word? Would we deny ourselves pleasure for the sake of our Savior when there is any hint of compromise with this world? We must remain sober and vigilant if we would take seriously being “in the world” but not “of the world.” “Come out from among them and be separate and do not touch what is unclean,” (II Corinthians 6:17). “Be holy as I am holy,” says the Lord, (I Peter 1:16). Let us refuse “even the appearance of evil” to protect our witness and honor our Lord.
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful

I am not trying, of course, to approach these truths theologically, but rather “thinking out loud” about the possible implications for my life and yours. Have you been to a movie lately? What about our television habits? Did you watch the Grammys (For the record, I did not.)? Political correctness is cancer, but the filth that proceeds from the mouths of many…too many…celebrities is even worse. I mean who among these Hollywood types has anything to say that would help me to live a more holy life? Why on earth do we care what any of them have to say? I know there are exceptions and that I am, perhaps, over-generalizing, but too many movies, television talk shows, and other productions are littered with words and philosophies of life that should be abhorrent to every true Believer.
But his delight is in the law of the Lord and in His law he meditates day and night

Seems that the more I am “in the Word,” the less I will be “in the world.” I must be careful here; my wife knows my habits. Daily devotion to God’s Word takes a warrior spirit! “Redeeming the time” is not just a Biblical mandate; it is at the heart of our battle. All those Sunday School lessons and pastoral sermons are not primarily about our gaining knowledge; they are about the eradication from our souls of every hint of worldliness. Not only should we be learning to think biblically, but we should also be “becoming” people who live the Book in every aspect of our lives, not just on Sundays, but in every moment of every day. Pastor Paul has implored us to get into the Word of God, not just individually, but with our families. Let’s just do it! How the enemy must tremble in his boots (if he wears boots) when he considers the potential of a local church that fully embraces the Word and commits to living out the entirety of its Truth. Out of room here, maybe another time we will consider the promise of verse 3. In the meantime, I suggest that this entire Psalm is worthy of much meditation by any people who aspire to become “People of the Book.”
REACHing In and REACHing Out in Student Ministry

As March begins, Mallory and I are getting closer and closer to our first baby’s birth. As one chapter of our lives comes to an end, an exciting new chapter called “Parenthood” begins. We are beyond excited! We do not know the gender of our baby, but we are looking forward to the great blessing the Lord has in store for us both. A few weeks ago, I read this verse from 3 John verse 4, “I have no greater joy than this: to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” In this verse, John is not specifically talking about his children, he is referring to people he has encouraged to follow Christ. To “walk in truth” implies a course of conduct or life, that is, “living in the truth.” The importance of both doctrinal integrity and spiritual vitality is evident in John’s affirmation that nothing brought greater joy to him than to know that his children were “walking in the truth.” John’s joy in life was found in Christ Jesus, and his greatest joy is seeing his “children” walk in the same manner in which Christ walked (1 John 2:6). As I move into this next chapter of my life, my joy will come from Jesus Christ, and my greatest joy will be to see my children walking in the truth. To experience this joy, my most important ministry shall be to my family. My role as a father is to live in the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ every day, to pray big prayers for my family, to encourage my family to follow Jesus, and to be the example of a Jesus follower by boldly saying, “Follow me as I follow Christ.” I will be the first to tell you, I know nothing about being a parent, but thank the Lord for the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit guides us and leads us as we humbly seek to serve our God and King. As March begins, let us, in our homes find our greatest joy - seeing our children, our grandchildren, our nieces and nephews, our FAMILY walk in the truth. Let us, as followers of Jesus, be an example for others to follow. Thanks for reading!

Back in January, I asked each of you to begin joining me in prayer for our Vacation Bible School. In January, we began to pray for those that would lead our children in the VBS classroom. In February, we added all of the other adult volunteers that would help in other roles. This month, I ask that you would join me in praying specifically for the youth in our church that will help in so many ways during VBS. Their support is also essential! Please pray that they would have submissive hearts (and schedules!) to how God will use them during the week of VBS. Our youth wear many hats during VBS, and we are so grateful for them! Pray that they would be encouraged in their walk with the Lord.

Learn more by joining us on Compassion Sunday March 12th or go online to www.compassion.com Our food pantry has been open almost a year now, and we have been blessed beyond measure by the individuals and families that we have had the pleasure to serve through our new type of food distribution. The food options we offer and the choices our clients are now given, have both pleased and empowered them. We thank God and our church family for the blessings we have experienced through this wonderful ministry. We ask for your continued prayer support, but we also need more volunteers. It is a big job which requires many hours each week.
7
Additional help would lighten the load for us all. Needed right now are: 1) Men with trucks to pick up donated food from Winn-Dixie and Wal-Mart three times a week; 2) Shopper assistants to help families with food selections; 3) Individuals to take full food carts to the shoppers’ cars on Tuesdays and Thursdays; and, 4) Volunteers to help restock pantry shelves on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
The Thrift Shop’s primary purpose is to generate funds to cover the operating expenses of the building, such as rent, electricity, water, phones, etc. The added blessing is that anyone who shops with us can find some nice things at a bargain price. It is preferred that donations be dropped off before 3 p.m. on Wednesday or Friday, and items most needed now are household items, such as towels, linens, kitchen supplies, and decorative items. We also still need additional volunteers for sorting, folding, and assisting shoppers. Please consider volunteering to help us one day a week, or one or two days a month. Partner with a friend, or even two, and volunteer for the same day and time. I challenge you to prayerfully consider what God would have you do with this ministry opportunity. I promise you that you will receive the greater blessing! Contact Beverly Cooke or call the WPFB at (985) 322-2017 to find out more or sign up to volunteer.
Principle 2 Earnestly believe that God exists, that I matter to Him, and that He has the power to help me recover. “Happy are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Romans 5:4 Step 2 We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. “For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Philippians 2:13

HOPE
--
Higher Power Openness to change Power to change Expect to change
Higher Power Our Higher Power, Jesus Christ, is the one and only true Higher Power. At some point in the past, you may have believed in Jesus’ existence, and you may even attend church. However, what Principle 2 is talking about is a personal relationship with Christ. Jesus desires a hands-on, day-to-day, moment-to-moment relationship with you. Jesus can do for you what you have never been able to do for yourself. Romans 11:36 (TLB) says, “Everything comes from God alone. Everything lives by his power.” Openness to Change What is the process that leads to solid belief, which leads you to change your life? Take a look the first four words in Step 2: “ We came to believe…..”
Hope is an openness to change. Sometimes we are afraid to change, even if our past was painful. We resist change because of our fear of the unknown, or in our despair; we think we don’t deserve anything better. Here is the good news: Hope opens doors where despair closes them! Hope discovers what can be done instead of grumbling about what can’t be done. Throughout life, you will continue to encounter hurts and trials that you are powerless to change, but with God’s help, you can be open to allow those circumstances and situations to change you – to make you better, not bitter.
8
Expect to Change Remember, don’t quit before the miracle happens! With God’s help, the changes that you have longed for are just steps away. Philippians 1:6 (TLB) “I am sure that God who began the good work within you will keep right on helping you grow in his grace until his task within you is finally finished on that day when Jesus Christ returns.”
We all know that you can’t do anything unless you get started. So, how much faith do you need to get started? Matthew 17:20 tells us, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can Ephesians 4:23 (TLB) gives us a chal- say to this mountain, ‘Move from here lenge: “Now your attitudes and to there,’ and it will move. to begin the recovery process. You need only a small amount, “as small as a mustard seed,” to effect change. All you need is just a little faith. If you put the faith you have in Jesus, your life will be changed! Romans 10:9: “ If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Family Bible Study for 2017 First Baptist Franklinton Family Catechism This year I want to challenge our church to take another step in personal growth and Bible study. Bro. Cody and I have prepared a family catechism to equip our congregation to know and articulate some of the most basic doctrines of the faith. The Oxford Dictionary defines catechism as, “a summary of the principles of Christian religion in the form of questions and answers, used for the instruction of Christians.” Each week, there will be at least one big question that the weekly passages will seek to answer. This question will relate to a basic doctrine of the Christian faith. A suggested memory verse will also be given each week. Catechisms have been developed by many different denominations for the purpose of helping children and new converts gain a firm footing in their faith. Bro. Cody and I have taken most of the questions and answers that you will study from the Westminster Shorter Catechism and the Baptist Catechism. Both were developed more than two hundred years ago. I believe this catechism will help all of us gain greater understanding and confidence in our walk with the Lord.
Bro. Paul
Suggested instructions for using this catechism: Set a time and place for meeting each day. Understand that the pressures and obligations of life may interfere from time to time. Stay the course and seek to be as consistent as possible. If you have small children, it may be helpful to write the question(s), the answer(s), and memory verse on a sheet of paper for daily reflection throughout the week. Begin the devotional time by asking the question(s) and reciting the answer(s) and memory verse together. Someone should then read the daily reading and ask, “How does this scripture help us understand the question(s) and answer(s) we are learning this week?” After allowing time for discussion, someone should close the time in prayer.

For questions and Memory Verses, see the 2017 Family Bible Study Devotion. Copies are available in the foyers and in the church office.

Service Times: Sunday Worship Services
HE IS ALIVE! Easter Outreach Effort Please join me in praying for and considering how you can participate in this upcoming church-wide campaign. In the week preceding Easter Sunday, we will be making an effort to place a Bible along with an invitation to Easter services in the homes of all our friends and neighbors. We will be encouraging our church members to commit to visiting their neighbors. We realize many
10
of them have a church home, and it is not our desire to keep them from worshipping with their church family. We simply want to remind our neighbors that Jesus Christ is alive, He is worthy of worship, and He offers forgiveness of sin to those who will repent in faith. Many of us live in neighborhoods where we seldom speak to our neighbors. This effort is meant to glorify Christ by engaging our neighbors with the Gospel. You will hear more about the process and plans for this effort in the coming weeks. Begin now to pray for your neighbors. Pray as you drive on your road home each day. Pray the Lord will prepare your neighbors for an invitation to come and join us as we worship the risen King!
