Give Thanks Dr. Cody Warren
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 I love the fall season. It is one of my most favorite times of the year. We get a break from the heat. Leaves begin to change to a beautiful orange or red color. The fall season seems to be the most loved time of the year. I remember having a conversation several weeks ago about how hot it was outside. Someone said, "I am ready for fall weather". Soon enough, it will be winter, and the weather will be a bit chilly. I am sure that some of us may say we are ready for Spring and for the weather to be a bit warmer. We never seem to be truly satisfied. We are a forgetful people. We live in the moment. We are either too hot or too cold. Paul shared with the Thessalonians that they were always to be thankful. Yes, we are to be thankful even when it feels as though it is 120 degrees outside. We tend to live in the moment and forget all of God’s blessings. We are approaching Thanksgiving, a time we set aside to give thanks for all that God has done for us. Paul revealed to the Thessalonians that they were to give thanks to God in whatever circumstance. What a thought. Regardless of what we are facing in life, we always have reason to give thanks to God. God has blessed us in numerous ways. Have you ever thought about what it means to give thanks? Let us consider at least three ways we can give thanks:
4 / The Br idg e
Rejoice in the Lord. Paul encouraged the Thessalonians always to rejoice. We show our gratitude to the Lord when we rejoice in His goodness toward us. When we pray, we praise God because He is worthy of praise. We praise Him even more because He has blessed us in numerous ways. Do you live a life that rejoices in God’s goodness? Pray with a thankful heart. We give thanks by simply thanking God when we pray. We tend to pray only for things we need or want. Prayer is communication with God. It is a time where we are to talk with the Lord. How often when you pray, do you thank God for all the ways He has blessed you? Spend time right now in prayer and call out specific blessings to the Lord in which you are thankful. Seek the Lord’s will. Paul told the Thessalonians that it was God’s will that they always rejoice, pray without stopping, and give thanks in all circumstances. We can show our thankfulness to God in how we live our lives for Him. If we are truly thankful for what God has done for us, then we will seek to live our lives for Him. We will desire to live in agreement with His will outlined in His Word. Are you seeking to discern God’s will? The truth remains: we are blessed. God created us for His glory. We have been saved through the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus. We have the glorious opportunity to have a relationship with our Father. Every day may we give thanks for what God has done.

Rev. Joey Miller, Associate Pastor Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your
youth is renewed like the eagle’s. – Psalm 103:1-5 (ESV)
Our Pilgrim forefathers who landed at Plymouth Rock some 300 years ago knew nothing of the prosperous times which you and I enjoy today in this great country that we call the United States of America. After traveling across the Atlantic in search of religious freedom, they arrived off the coast of America in December of 1620. It was a rough trip and a rough winter. That first Winter, according to historians, about half of them died due to the harsh winter conditions along with inadequate nutrition and housing as well as an epidemic. The ship, which was to bring food and relief, brought 35 more mouths to feed, but not an ounce of provisions. Still, the pilgrims gathered to celebrate God’s goodness and provision. Their leader, William Brewster, rose from a meager Plymouth dinner, consisting of a plate of clams and a glass of cold water. He gave thanks to God “for the abundance of the sea and the treasures hid in the sand.” The Pilgrims didn’t have much, but they possessed great gratitude, and it was upon this very thing that America was built. These stalwart people, strong, devout and sincere, were the foundation upon which our nation was established. The next time we’re tempted to complain about the weather or the government or the state of our economy, we should remember this bit of history and think of that first long winter at Plymouth Colony. We will be more prone to give thanks to the Lord for what we have received of His generous hand. In Psalm 103, David reminded himself to bless the Lord and give thanks for His blessings, not forgetting one benefit that comes from the hand of the Lord. The heart that flows with gratitude is indeed happier because thanksgiving reminds us of the greatness and faithfulness of our God and instills hope that God who has blessed will continue to bless. This great Psalm is specific in areas where God has blessed us:
His forgiveness of sin His healing of disease His redeeming of our lives from the pit His crowning us with His covenant love and mercy

His satisfying us with good things renewing our youth and vitality David expressed his thanksgiving by calling on all who was within him to praise and bless the name of the Lord, You and I will do well to practice some “self-talk” and remind ourselves of just how good God is. Doing so not only honors God but adds to the joy and contentment of our lives during the Thanksgiving season and throughout the year. May we continuously say with King David, “Bless the Lord, O my soul… and forget not all His benefits.”
UPCOMING ADULT 55+ LUNCHEONS The November Luncheon is set for Friday, November 1st at 10:30 a.m. and will take place in the Family Life Center. This will be our Thanksgiving Luncheon. Rev. Cody Thomas REACHing IN & REACHing OUT I currently have 20 chickens. In case you didn’t know, chickens are weak and not very smart. Every evening right when the sun is setting, I go outside and “put up” the chickens. I shut them into their coop because there are predators out at night that would love an easy meal from one of my chickens. In the mornings, I go outside again and let the chickens out because they’ve been shut up in the coop all night. I go through these efforts because I want to protect my chickens the best I can. Rain or shine, normal days and holidays, cold weather and nice weather, I go out and take care of my chickens to protect them. We go through extremes to protect the things we love. We install security systems in our homes. We always make sure to pack the hand sanitizer. We have passcodes on our phones. We don’t buy foods that have GMOs. We go through extremes to protect the things we love! Are we that passionate about protecting our family from spiritual threats? Consider for a moment that Satan devotes 168 hours a week trying to deceive you and tear apart your family. We are born with a nature that desires to go against the holiness of God and go about doing our own fleshly desires. Left unto ourselves, we are weak and not very smart. Left unto ourselves, we NEED protection. Protection from the satanic influences of this world as well as ourselves. How are we as individuals and leaders within our homes going to protect ourselves and our homes from spiritual threats? 1. PRAY – Prayer is when we seek to connect our hearts with God’s heart. If our heart’s true desire is for protection from the Lord, then we ought to pray. The words of Jesus in the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) teaches us how to pray for God’s protection, “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done … Give us this day our daily bread … lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.” Pray in the good times and the bad times. Pray for your personal walk with the Lord. Pray for your spouse and your children. Pray in solitude and pray with others. Your children ought to hear you praying for them. Seek the Lord, His protection and guidance, through prayer. If you find it difficult to pray, the best solution is to pray. Open up your heart to the Lord. Philippians 4:4-7 8 / The Br idg e
2. WORD – When we devote ourselves to the study and application of the Word, we protect ourselves from the lies of Satan. When we know the truth, we can easily spot a lie. Philippians 4:8-9, “whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me – practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” Since Satan devotes 168 hours a week to your destruction, you ought to spend ample time within the Word of God resting in the truth of His Word. Get in the Word daily. Get in the Word with your family. Teach your children how to read and apply the Word of God. Make time to study the Word. NOT one time in God’s Word does He ever promise a safe and secure life for His children. What He does promise is that He will NEVER leave us nor forsake us. He is always with us. In the difficult times of life, we know His presence and peace if we’ve been with Him in prayer and the Word. Bad things will happen! Philippians 4:7 promises PEACE to those who seek the Lord in prayer. Philippians 4:9 promises the presence of the God of Peace when we hold firm to the truth. We go through extremes to protect the things we love. Are we going through extremes to protect our loved ones spiritually? A Note from Bro. Butch Reviere “Let us enter his presence with thanksgiving; let us shout triumphantly to him in song.” Psalm 95:2 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. Psalm 100:4 I will offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the Lord. Psalm 116:17 Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6 These are just a few of the scripture verses which admonish us to be grateful to God and also remind us that our gratitude should not just be attached to current circumstances or perceived blessings but, much more so, to the faithfulness of our God, who loves us unconditionally, is always present, sovereignly escorting us through this life and who is, according to Philippians 1:6, continuing the good work he started in us and “will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” The realization of these truths compels us as we approach God in worship to do so with a spirit of genuine thanksgiving, not only for his daily activity in our lives but also, and more so, for the redemption of our souls. The Psalmist knew what it was to be grateful to God even amid life’s difficulties and that the expression of that gratitude might sometimes require a sacrificial attitude, disregarding the troubles in light of the surpassing goodness of Father God. In his letter to the Philippians, the apostle reminds us that thanksgiving should always accompany prayer; that is, we should be grateful before we receive the answers to our praying, even though those answers might be a long time coming! A heart from which gratitude flows is one that is focused on relationship, connected at the cross to the heart of God. Its thankfulness is more about faith than sight. Its gratitude rests in the unfathomable love of God. So, when the day set aside by a presidential declaration (the fourth Thursday of November) comes and we celebrate with family and friends, let us remember that we have been bought with a price, our sin debt has been paid in full, and we are daily sustained by the One from whom every good and perfect gift comes (see James 1:17). “Thank you, Lord, for saving my soul. Thank you, Lord, for making me whole. Thank you, Lord, for giving me thy great salvation so rich and free.” Many of us learned this little chorus as children. Though it is simple, it is profound in its meaning and can be a reminder for us to continue to nourish an attitude of gratitude! So when you gather with your family around that table on November 28th, reflect on the unnumbered blessings we have as believers in Christ Jesus and be thankful. Happy Thanksgiving, y’all!

FBC Kids News Several year-end items as we begin to close-out 2019 and look forward to 2020. November Calendar Changes Sunday mornings, November 3rd during the 10:45 a.m. services: Currently, there is no one scheduled to lead Wee Worship during this service. However, Wee Worship will be offered during the 8:15 am service. For security issues, we are not able to have Wee Worship without having a volunteer scheduled at least by Thursday in advance. Please check your bulletin on this mornings to see if anyone volunteered. Sunday evening, November 10th: FBC will not be having regular Sunday evening activities or worship at FBC. Instead, we will be going to Hillcrest Baptist Church at 5 p.m. for Mack’s Ordination Service. We hope to see you there! Sunday, November 17th at 6 p.m.: Operation Christmas Child Packing Party, Family Life Center Wednesday, November 27th: No Wednesday Evening Activities Franklinton Christmas Festival Ornaments FBC Kids will have two Christmas trees at the Franklinton Christmas Festival this year. The 4’ trees will be on display during the festival in the lot by Bickham, Inc. FBC Kids from birth to 6th grade are asked to make one ornament each to hang on the trees. The trees will follow the theme “Jesus Loves the Little Children.” Ornaments are encouraged to have each child’s name and be reflective of their interests. Pinterest has lots of great ideas, but store-bought ornaments are also welcome. The ornaments are due to Mrs. Kelly no later than Sunday evening, November 24th. While the ornaments will be returned to the children, please be aware that they need to be weatherproof. Non-breakable ornaments are preferred. How Great Thou ART & Zoolights On Friday, November 29th, from 2 p.m. until 4 pm, FBC Kids 4th-6th Graders are invited to a special Christmas How Great Thou ART. The cost for the project is $5 and due when signing your child up. 1 0 / The Br idg e
Following How Great Thou ART, leaving at 4 p.m., all FBC Kids from Toddlers-6th are invited to join us as we travel to the Baton Rouge Zoo to see the zoo decorated for Christmas. The cost of the Zoolights trip is $10. Food will be available for purchase at the Flamingo Café, located at the rear of the Baton Rouge Zoo. We expect to return between 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. As with all FBC Kids outings, all Kindergarten and younger children require their own adult chaperone. Sign-ups for both the Christmas How Great Thou ART and the trip to the Zoolights will be on the FBC Kids bulletin board from November 1st-November 24th. Payment for one or both trips is due when you sign your child up. You can pay online at www.fbcfranklinton.com (under the ‘Give’ tab, please select FBC Kids under the ‘Fund’ option.). You can also pay in person during regular business hours, or on Sundays in an offering envelope (please write “FBC Kids Trip” on the envelope, as well as the child’s name). Wee Worship 2020 Early in the month of December, the new yearly schedule for Wee Worship will be sent out. If you are a current Wee Worship volunteer and would like to continue volunteering, you don’t have to do a thing! Your name will automatically be added to our list of 2020 volunteers in a similar time slot. If you would like to change when you volunteer, please let Kelly know sometime before the end of November. If you have decided to serve in other capacities and no longer serve in Wee Worship, please let Kelly know by the end of November. Our Wee Worship volunteers are asked to only serve for two consecutive services per calendar year—either during the 8:15 am service, during the 10:45 service, or on just one Sunday per year during both services. If your child attends Wee Worship, we especially need your help! While I realize that some may have other commitments, Wee Worship will only be scheduled for Sundays that we have volunteers. On Sundays when there is no volunteer, there will be no Wee Worship. An entire year of service in our Wee Worship
ministry requires no preparation by volunteers, as the materials are prepared for you, and the lessons are simple and scripted and require— at most—a two Sunday commitment, less than 90 minutes combined. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Kelly during the month of November. Because recruiting volunteers is so time-consuming and takes away from other areas of ministry, this will be the only call for Wee Worship volunteers during 2020. Please don’t leave our families lacking this very important ministry for weeks at a time. To volunteer, one must be a church member, at least 21 years of age, and have a background check on file. November Missions Emphases From now until Operation Christmas Child Collection Week (Monday, November 18th-Sunday, November 24th), families are encouraged to pack a shoebox that will travel the world to share the hope and love of Jesus Christ with a child. While shoeboxes can be packed for several ages and both genders, FBC Kids and their families are reminded that the most underrepresented group are 10-14-year-old boys. Ideas for packing a shoebox can be found on Pinterest or on the Samaritan’s Purse website, www.samaritanspurse.org/occ. During the entire month of November, FBC Kids will be collecting new or very gently used backpacks or overnight bags for our friends at Moving Mountains Ministry. As a reminder, Moving Mountains ministers to foster children and their families in Tangipahoa and Washington parishes. When they are removed from their homes, what few belongings they are usually able to take are usually put into a plastic trash bag. Please help us restore some of a child’s dignity by donating a bag suitable for a few changes of clothes. Upward Basketball Our friends at Hillcrest Baptist Church are registering children for Upward Basketball. See the FBC Kids bulletin board for more information or call the Hillcrest Baptist Church Office for more information (985.839.4703).

Local Missions Washington Parish Food Bank & Thrift Shop October was a very special month for the food bank. It began with the Annual Meeting of the Washington Baptist Association at Palestine Baptist Church, where the Debbie Richardson Memorial Volunteer of the Year Award was presented. This award was instituted last year to recognize a volunteer at the food bank who exemplified the dedication and giving spirit of Debbie, the first director of this food bank. Debbie together with Dr. Stan Statham, our current Director of Missions, envisioned and begun the food bank in May 2006. This year, the award was presented to our own Jeanette Sumrall, whose sweet and loving spirit can be seen busy at work helping our families shop almost every Tuesday and Thursday that we are open. She is truly a joy to work with, and the food bank is so very blessed to have her on our team. Thank you, Jeanette, for all you do each week to serve your Lord. We love you! We also were very pleased and blessed to have had a group of ladies, led by Katie Casanova of our church, volunteer with us on October 10th. These ten ladies are the fundraisers in this region for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. In addition to the great work they do for St. Jude, they took time out from their work retreat to help minister to our families and even brought hair products, lotions, and oranges to share with our shoppers. This amazing group took charge of the shopping, taking out the carts and unloading them in the cars, and stocking shelves. They were wonderful to our families, and we so much appreciated them joining with us in this ministry. Last, but certainly not least, I want to thank Dr. Cody Warren so much for his leadership in our church’s global hunger emphasis by encouraging a churchwide food drive for the food bank. Thanks also to Kelly McElveen for putting the “wheels” to the program by borrowing the shopping carts-awesome idea-and decorating them with signs for food items needed. Thank you so much to all of you who contributed food or money for food. We are so very blessed to have such support from our church family. Please continue to keep us in your prayers as we urgently need some others to step up and help with computer skills, weekly food pickup, and family assistance on shopping days. - Beverly Cooke Most needed food items include:
