We are Family Dr. Cody Warren And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Hebrews 10:24-25 We are now approaching the end of summer. Teachers and students are getting ready for a new school year. Football season will soon begin. It is a season of excitement. However, it also means that vacations have now ended. I love going on vacation with our family. Vacation is a time to get away and spend time together. The destination is not really that important, as much as the time that is spent together. Family is important. I am thankful that I am a part of more than one family. God has blessed Kendra and me with three wonderful kids and extended family. God has also blessed us with a faith family. I have enjoyed our study on Sunday nights on how we are a family. We are family because we are connected through Jesus Christ. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross brought us into a family where we are brothers and sisters. We are to be committed to our faith family.

4 / The Br idg e

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Philippians 4:4

We commit to helping one another as we all seek to grow closer to Jesus. The writer of Hebrews shared how we are to be committed to a faith family. The writer of Hebrews stressed the importance of encouraging our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. We are to commit to encouraging one another. We all need encouragement. How are we to encourage one another? We are to encourage each other to love Jesus more and to love one another. We encourage one another to love by praying for one another, providing support, and holding one another accountable. Another way we are to encourage one another is to do good works, to serve Jesus, and others. We are to encourage each other to serve the Lord, to use the talents and gifts that God has given us to make His name known. How are you encouraging your faith family to serve Jesus? I am glad I am a part of God’s family. I look forward to us serving Jesus together and to encouraging each other in the journey of faith. Let us love Jesus, love one another, and be committed to our faith family.

Rev. Joey Miller, Associate Pastor “I waited patiently for the Lord; and He inclined to me and heard my cry. He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps. He has put a new song in my mouth—Praise to our God; many will see it and fear, and will trust in the Lord.” – Psalm 40:1-3 Joseph, one of our Old Testament heroes, found himself in a pit. But, it wasn’t just a pit in the ground. Joseph was in a pit of hatred, jealousy, and envy put there by his brothers. You and I can find ourselves in a pit also. Some pits are pits of pain that life has brought our way. Others are pits of problems caused by sin or circumstances. Like Joseph in Genesis, we can find ourselves in a pit caused by people. No matter what caused our pit, we don’t want to stay there. So what do we do? We follow the example of David, the Psalmist in Psalm 40. What did David do? He prayed to the sovereign God for help. But he didn’t just say a small prayer and forget about it. He didn’t just accept his pit as his lot in life. David waited on the Lord in trust and expectation. He looked steadfastly to the Lord. The result was that God heard him and delivered him out of the pit. But notice that God wasn’t finished there. He set David’s feet on a solid rock and established his steps so that David moved beyond the pit to the place of peace in the Lord. The Lord also gave David a new song, a song of praise to the Lord God who ministered to others. Pits will cause us to lose our song and lose our joy. But God delivers us when we call on him in trust and expectation. He will keep His Word. Ask God to restore your joy and your song. And then be faithful to praise and serve Him. What a blessing it is to have Bro. Cody Warren, Kendra, and their children here serving the Lord with us. Brother Cody has been active in meeting and ministering to our people. His Sunday morning messages are on the topic, “Joy in the Journey.” May God use His Word to help us find the joy in Jesus and to restore our song.

Rev. Cody Thomas REACHing IN & REACHing OUT Summer is officially over and the new school year has begun! For some of us, the beginning of a new school year brings about disappointment and sadness, while for others it brings about a very welcomed sigh of relief. For me, the beginning of a new school year is bittersweet. Bitter because it is the end of the no-school type of freedom we experience in Student Ministry. Sweet because it is the beginning for some super pumped up awesome 7th graders.

any questions, please let me know. Also, you’ll see some dates to put on your calendar; please make a note of these dates.

If your teenager is a new 7th grader, you should be getting a few things in the mail soon. If you have ANY questions about the Student Ministry, please feel free to contact me and let me know how I can help. Maybe your teenager hasn’t really participated in the Student Ministry, so now is a great time to start.

A Note from Bro. Butch Reviere “I Saw the Lord,” a song by Dallas Holm “The place was white as snow and pure as finest gold. It had the look of new, yet had the look of old. I felt like I was home, but felt so far away. In fear I thought to leave, but felt the urge to stay. And then a silence fell like none I’d ever known. I stood among the millions, I stood there all alone. His face was like the sun, His eyes were like the sea. His voice was like the thunder rolling through eternity. And then from sleep awakened I looked into the night, The darkness overtaken by a bright and shining light. I couldn’t understand it, I couldn’t reason how. And then my eyes beheld Him; I wasn’t dreaming now. And I saw the Lord. He was high and lifted up and rightfully adored. And I saw the Lord and He saw me.” Perhaps these words remind you of the prophet Isaiah’s vision, as recorded in Chapter six of his prophecy. “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphim were standing above him; they each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Armies; his glory fills the whole earth.” Isaiah 6:1-3,CSV From Revelation 15, verses 3 and 4, we read: “They sang the song of God’s servant Moses and the song of the Lamb: Great and awe-inspiring are your works, Lord God, the Almighty; just and true are your ways, King of the nations. Lord, who will not fear and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All the nations will come and worship before you because your righteous acts have been revealed.” CSV The words of the Psalmist, who admonishes us to praise and worship, are too many to list; but consider these few, well-known verses from Psalm 150: “Hallelujah! Praise God in his sanctuary. Praise him in his mighty expanse. Praise him for his powerful acts; praise him for his abundant greatness. Let everything that breathes praise the Lord. Hallelujah!” (Verses 1, 2, and 6,CSV) On any Sunday morning, around the world, there are millions offering worship to Almighty God, Creator of the universe. They (we) sing our songs and pray our prayers; we fellowship with

and encourage one another. We teach and preach the Word. We challenge each other to faithful living and, hopefully, we determine to live lives of obedience that honor God and glorify His name. But do we truly worship? Is our worship from the heart? Do we worship “in Spirit and truth” as desired by our Father? I suggest that most of us truly want to please God in our worship; however, to do so takes intentionality and intense desire, without which the distractions that are all about us will steal our attention from the One who gave His life for us and deserves our worship. When was the last time you truly sensed a deep communion with God, when you knew His Presence intimately, when your thoughts were consumed with His attributes? Such is our struggle; but with prayer and practice, we can go beyond the mechanics of our worship into real fellowship with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. It is an overwhelming endeavor but so very much worth our commitment to persevere in worship, together with other believers or alone with Him. May our experience be as described in Dallas Holm’s song, Isaiah’s vision, the Psalmist’s encouragement, and the apostle John’s vision of souls beyond number, all worshipping with a glorious “Worthy is the Lamb…Blessing and honor and glory and power be to the one seated on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!.” (Rev. 5:12,13) CSV

FBC Kids News Once again, another summer has come and gone! As much as I love the freedom and family time summer affords us, it also makes me appreciate the routine that the season of back-to-school brings. As you prepare for your child’s back-to-school routine, I hope you’ll make these opportunities a regular part of the life of your family! Ongoing during August: Sign-ups for Preteen Extreme & CentriKid 2020, Child Protection Training FBC Kids is partnering with FBC Covington and FBC Ponchatoula for Preteen Extreme, a one-day event especially for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, on Saturday, September 28th. The Gospel Project take kids on a Christcentered, chronological journey through Scripture. Kids will discover how the gospel unfolds from Genesis through Revelation. September 1st: First-Sixth Graders will begin the Sunday School hour with a morning meeting in Rm. 310. It will be a brief time for us to come together, introduce the lesson, and focus our hearts onto the lessons that the FBC Kids Sunday School Ministry Team has prepared. There Is No Quest Without Questions The crooked punctuation mark at the end of a sentence speaks of curiosity, interest, and perhaps doubt. A question is an invitation to vulnerability, to intimacy. The Bible does not shy away from such an invite. Over and over we see the people of God asking questions of their Creator. We also see the God of the universe asking questions of His creation. The Quest is a challenge to accept the invitation. In this six-week excursion with Jesus, Beth Moore uses questions from Scripture to lead you into intimacy with the One who knows you best. Learn to dig into the Word, to respond to the questions of God, and to bring your questions before Him. Let the crooked punctuation mark be the map that points you into a closer relationship with the Father. • • • •

Learn to pray to promote intimacy with God. Explore questions and responses from the Bible. Track your quest by journaling along the way. Learn to read and respond to Scripture. Quest Study Journals Cost $19 Class will meet in the Circle of Joy Classroom on Wednesday evenings at 5:45 p.m. beginning, August 14th.

Have you ever found yourself thinking, “God, please don’t let this be the way my story unfolds?" Life often looks so very different than we hoped or expected. Some events may simply catch us off guard for a moment, but others shatter us completely. We feel disappointed and disillusioned, and we quietly start to wonder about the reality of God’s goodness.

• • • •

Lysa TerKeurst understands this deeply. During the It's Not Supposed to Be This Way Bible Study, you'll learn to: Stop being pulled into the anxiety of disappointment by

discovering how to better process unmet expectations and other painful situations. Train ourselves to recognize the three strategies of the enemy so we can stand strong and persevere through unsettling relationships and uncertain outcomes. Discover the secret of being steadfast and not panicking when God actually does give us more than we can handle. Shift our suspicion that God is cruel or unfair to the biblical assurance that God is protecting and preparing us. Know how to encourage a friend and help her navigate hard realities with real help from God's truth.

Ministries Sponsored by FBC Franklinton

Local Missions Washington Parish Food Bank & Thrift Shop

Now that we are again taking new applications for the food bank, we have averaged about ten new clients each Tuesday in July and expect that trend to continue. Second Harvest monthly food deliveries are still insufficient for our needs, so we have to adjust as best we can. Such items as canned vegetables, grits, canned fruit, and now tomato products and dry beans have been in short supply. We still have had to purchase at least some canned vegetables most months just to meet the minimal need. If it weren’t for some regular monetary donations from a few individuals and some service clubs, this would not be possible, so a huge thank you goes out to those who donate regularly. I also want to thank the youth from our church who came out twice in July to help us. They were truly a blessing to our volunteers and our families. The youth helped to give out food, shop with our families, take carts to the cars, stock shelves, and just be the hands of Jesus to those who needed it the most. I also want to give a very heartfelt thank you to Bro. Cody Thomas, who continues to do such an awesome job with our youth and gives them opportunities to serve others. All

the youth were so polite and helpful to everyone, and our families really enjoyed the attention given to them. Currently, I am very concerned about the future of our food bank. My codirector for three years has decided to leave at the end of the year. He does a lot of the heavy things and has so much knowledge, having been employed by Second Harvest in the past. We have been a good team from the start, each doing separate things but also combining our efforts in many other ways. Others will be needed if the food bank is to continue to function as it must Please consider what you can do to help. There are several things that will be required weekly, but others only once or twice a month. Please pray for others to be called to the task as this transition begins. Also, more regular thrift shop volunteers are urgently needed to work one or two days a week so that the shop can provide more income to support the operation of the food bank. Thank you for your support, and I hope to hear from you or someone you have talked to about our needs. God bless you.

Missions Supported by FBC Franklinton

The arrival of Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes in a remote village in Africa helped a local pastor lead a community away from spirit worship to following the Lord Jesus Christ. After children received their shoebox gifts, they attended the Bible study and discipleship program The Greatest Journey taught by a local teacher. Afterward, they began to share with their family and community what they had learned about Jesus. The results were a church being planted and live being changed.

Please continue to prepare OCC shoebox gifts that are so successful in the spread of the gospel to unreached people groups. As you prepare, take advantage of school supply sales going on now, and purchase notebooks, pencils, pens, erasers, etc. to help a child go to school.

The little boy in the last picture said, "Now I want to be a pastor when I grow up."
