Joy in the Journey Dr. Cody Warren It is such a joy to be here with you finally! We are thankful that God has called us to serve together for such a time as this! The journey to First Baptist Franklinton has been joyous. However, I do have to admit that certain parts of the process have not been joyous. Telling people that we love dearly goodbye was very painful. The process of packing all of our stuff to move to Franklinton was downright dreadful. I never like to move! Packing all of our stuff to move to a new location gives me anxiety. I just want to throw it all away! Life is a lot like moving. It is joyous to see how God is transitioning you to a new place. It is also painful to say goodbye and to move from a place that you love. The good news is that you can have joy, even amidst the pain. I am excited to preach through the book of Philippians over the next several weeks. Paul wrote the book of Philippians to express how we can have joy in the journey of life. The Christian life is a journey. When we enter into a relationship with Christ, we receive inexpressible joy. However, Paul did not mean that life would always be a piece of cake! We encounter times in our lives where it is dreadful. Much like packing, we grieve over certain situations in life. The good news for us today is that whatever issues we may face in this life, we can still have joy. We can still have peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

4 / The Br idg e

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Philippians 4:4 So how do we persevere regardless of the circumstances we face in life? We lean on Christ. Jesus is our strength. Paul wrote in Philippians 4:12-13 that he knew what it was like to have plenty and to be without, but through it all, Jesus gave him strength. In that same chapter (4:6-7) Paul instructed the Philippians to give all their concerns to the Lord, and He would give them peace. If your facing issues today stop right now and lift them to Jesus! We lean on one another. Paul shared with the Philippians that they have helped him to share Christ with boldness. In Philippians 1:4-5, Paul wrote that he was thankful for the Philippians because of their partnership. He wrote about how the Philippians had prayed for him (1:19). Paul also mentioned how the Philippians supported him financially (4:15). The family of God is a group of people who help one another in the journey. You have helped us tremendously. Many of you went over and beyond to help us move to Franklinton, and we are so grateful! What a great example of leaning on one another in times of need! We lean on one another by praying for each other, by holding one another accountable, by encouraging one another, and by simply being present. Regardless of what you are facing right now, you can have joy in the journey!

Dr. Cody Warren, Pastor

Memory Verses for July 2019

Sunday July 7th, 2019

Sunday July 14th, 2019

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and by craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

“And that is why I suffer these things. But I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until that day.” - 2 Timothy 1:12

- 1 Timothy 6:10

Sunday July 21st, 2019

Sunday July 28th, 2019

“This is why I endure all things for the elect: so that they also may obtain salvation, which is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.” - 2 Timothy 2:10

“Be diligent to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who doesn’t need to be ashamed, correctly teaching the word of truth.” - 2 Timothy 2:15

Rev. Joey Miller, Associate Pastor Though the fig tree may not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, and the fields yield no food; Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, and there be no herd in the stalls—Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s feet, and He will make me walk on my high hills. – Habakkuk 3:17-19 (NKJV)

Ray Charles was a pianist, singer, and composer known not only for his musical ability but for his blindness. In the biographical film about his life, we learn how Ray compensated for his blindness by learning to hear what others could not —a skill that would contribute to his musical accomplishments. In one scene, Ray enters his home and trips over a rocking chair. He falls, cries out in pain, and calls to his mother for help. His mother instinctively steps forward, but then stops herself. She quietly steps back as she painfully watches her son learn to deal with his disability. Believing he is alone, Ray is forced to listen more carefully for help. First, he hears voices outside and a hen clucking. He stops crying, turns his head, and slowly gets up. He hears a cow mooing and metal clanking outside. He turns his head in the direction of a kettle of boiling water. Stretching out his arms, he walks toward a crackling fireplace and feels its heat, pulling back his hand when it comes too close. His mother watches him carefully, concerned with his every move. She is taken aback by his progress and gives a low gasp. "I hear you, Mama. You’re right there," Ray says. His mother now has tears streaming down her face as she tells him, "Yes, yes, I am here." She kneels in front of Ray and embraces him.

6 / The Br idg e

You and I face dark times too. Life can be difficult, and sometimes, we feel all alone. But these tough times teach us some very important things about God. God never stops loving us. He never stops watching us. And, He always celebrates our victories with His love and embraces.

SUMMER LUNCHEONS July 12th

Habakkuk lived in difficult times and couldn’t see God working in his world. But he grew in those hard times and came to exclaim that although things looked really bad, he had reasons to rejoice in the Lord no matter what. He knew that God was his salvation and strength. He had the faith to believe that God would lead him to walk in high places.

Lunch at Mike's Restaurant in Franklinton at 11:00 a.m.

JULY NURSING HOME WORSHIP SERVICES What a blessing our recent monthly visits to our nursing homes were. As most of you know, we schedule worship services for these sweet people who are not able to go to church. We bring the church to them every month. The blessing comes in seeing their faces light up as they sing and worship. One of our ladies blessed us this month by singing one of her favorite songs. An additional blessing at our June visit was to see Mrs. Terry Seal, still recovering from hip surgery, join us in bringing worship to the residents. If you’re looking for a ministry or would just like to be a blessing to some folks who need it, join us for the monthly ministry in July. We could really use some more voices, smiles, and love as we serve the Lord in this most important manner. The times and dates are to the right.

The meal will consist of catfish and shrimp with baked potato and cole slaw. Our August luncheon will be at Golden Corral in McComb on Friday, August 2. Be sure to sign up in Sunday School or call the church office to register for these luncheons.

Rev. Cody Thomas REACHing IN & REACHing OUT

“Thank YOU

for supporting our Student Ministry. I am so grateful to be a part of a church family who loves and supports its Student Ministry. Our students had a great week at Camp Fuego. Our theme verses were Matthew 28:18-20. Please continue to pray for us as we seek to “make disciples” wherever we go. Thank you so much for supporting us, loving us, praying for us, and for being great Christian examples for our students.”

A Note from Bro. Butch Reviere First of all, I join all of you in welcoming to FBC Dr. Cody Warren and family. We look forward with much anticipation to the months and years ahead under his leadership as our new pastor. Also, I am personally grateful to our Pastor search committee for the way they prayerfully and faithfully executed the search on our behalf. Together with Dr. Warren, we all begin a new chapter in the life and witness of the First Baptist Church of Franklinton. May our unity be strong, our declaration of the Gospel be urgent, and may our Lord Jesus receive all the glory! Now I turn our attention to the day for which July is most famous (not discounting those of you whose birthday is this month!). If you were in worship

with us on June 30th, you heard these words presented by our choir: “Broken, hurting, tired, and worn, the heart of our great nation’s torn by careless choices we have made that took us far from You. Lord, bring us back to our first love; let Your Spirit move. Destined, chosen, we are called to light the darkness, give our all, to bind the wounded, share Your love, fall on our knees, and pray. We humbly seek forgiveness. Pour out Your grace today! We boldly bow before Your throne, and we are not ashamed to ask You for revival, Lord; we come in Jesus’ name! Heal our land. Hear Your people pray. Help us seek Your face, turn from our wicked ways. Heal our land. We need Your strength and power. In this final hour, reach out Your hand. Heal our land!” (written by Phil Barfoot and Rebecca J. Peck)

Culturally, socially, morally, politically, spiritually…in every context, our nation is rapidly deteriorating from the nation born over two hundred years ago on principles derived from the Holy Bible by men who, whether Christian or not, had respect for God and the absolutes of His Word. In our land, there are loud voices, whose sense of morality is born, not from the Word of God, but from their own selfish, humanistic, pagan world view. The conflict over the killing of unborn children is but one of the many issues for which America will one day be judged by Almighty God. We are reminded now of how it was in the days of Noah “that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Genesis 6:5); and because “the heart (of men) is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked” (Jeremiah 17:9), the end will assuredly be destruction…if we, personally and nationally, do not repent. As the song says on our behalf, “we are not ashamed to ask You for revival, Lord.” If you worship with us on Sunday, July 7th, you will hear the choir present a song by Bill and Gloria Gaither which sums up well the message we proclaim and which is the only hope for our beloved country and, indeed, the whole world. “Deep within, the heart has always known that there is freedom somehow breathed into the very soul of life. The prisoner, the powerless, the slave, have always known it. There’s something that keeps reaching for the sky. And even life begins because a baby fights

for freedom, and songs we love to sing have freedom’s theme. Some have walked through fire and flood to find the place of freedom, and some faced Hell itself for freedom’s dream. God built freedom into ev’ry fiber of creation, and He meant for us to all be free and whole. Oh, but when my Lord bought freedom with the blood of His redemption, His cross stamped pardon on my very soul. I’ll sing it out with ev’ry breath; I’ll let the whole world hear it, this hallelujah anthem of the free, that iron bars and heavy chains can never hold us captive. The Son has made us free and free, indeed! Let freedom ring down through the ages from a hill called Calvary. Let freedom ring wherever hearts know pain. Let freedom echo through the lonely streets where prisons have no key. You can be free, and you can sing, “Let freedom ring!” We all know that the answers to the ills which plague us will not be found at city hall, or at the state house, or in Washington D.C., or anywhere else. We have the Answer! We must be involved in charting the course of our communities and nation in every way possible, but we also must not be deterred or distracted from our ultimate mission and calling, which is to declare the Gospel as long as we have breath! “He whom the Son sets free is free indeed!” (John 8:36)

FBC Kids News As the last month of summer draws near, I hope you will mark your calendar and plan to join us for these last few activities!

Thursday, August 1st beginning at 10:00 a.m. (Time is tentative): Annual Sixth Grade Farewell Outing

Friday, July 5th at 3:00 p.m. – Saturday, July 6th at 9:30 a.m.: I Love Camping at the Zoo!

Continuing with our tradition of recognizing their transition from our Children’s Ministry to our Youth Ministry, all completed 6th graders are invited to join myself and Bro. Cody as we spend a fun-filled day with them. Past trips have included outings to Global Wildlife for a private tour, Safari Quest, and, of course, pizza! We don’t give out many details because we like for it to be a surprise— one last day that I get to soak up a few more memories with them, and I get to “officially” introduce them to Bro. Cody and our REACH Student Ministry. There is no charge for this outing, and a sign-up sheet is located on the FBC Kids bulletin board.

Join FBC Kids as we camp out at the Hattiesburg Zoo. We will meet at FBC on Friday, July 5th at 3:00 p.m. and travel by bus to the Hattiesburg Zoo. The cost is $35 per person, and our group size is scheduled to be for 50 people. The cost includes dinner, a late-night snack, breakfast, tours, and sleeping accommodations. After you sign up, I will get with each person to discuss sleeping arrangements and what bedding to pack as there are several options. Individuals are encouraged to bring small coolers with bottles of water. Family groups are also invited to bring their own tents. The sign-up sheet for this is on the FBC Kids bulletin board, and payment is due when we leave. Because we have to pre-book spots, please do not sign up unless you plan to attend. Children who have completed Kindergarten and below are welcome to attend with a parent or guardian. Children who have completed grades 1-6 are welcome to attend with or without a parent or guardian. Wednesday, July 31st from 5:30 p.m. – 7 :00 p.m.: Adios, Summer! End-of-Summer Party FBC Kids will be hosting a Mexicanthemed end-of-summer farewell party for children who have completed 6th grade and under. Join us for food (a taco bar, chips, salsa, and queso!) and games in the Family Life Center from 5:30 p.m. until 6:15 p.m. and outdoor water slides and inflatables from 6:15 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. There will be designated jumps and water slides available for completed Kindergarten and below, completed 1st-3rd graders, and for completed 4th-6th graders. Please be sure to bring a towel and a donation to the Washington Parish Food Bank (suggested items are peanut butter, canned tuna, boxes of macaroni and cheese, bags of dried beans, or canned vegetables). As with all FBC Kids water events, all children are expected to wear a dark colored t-shirt over their swimsuits. Children who have completed Kindergarten and below will need a parent or guardian.

Sunday, August 4th: Promotion Sunday & Kindergarten Recognition Sunday Several years ago, we began promoting on the first Sunday in August, which is closer to when the students begin their new grades in school. At the start of Sunday School, 9:30 a.m., children will go to their new class. Not sure where to go? No worries! We’ll be there to make sure everyone knows where to go! Look for a postcard in the mail with more details about your child’s new class during the last week of July. Your child isn’t plugged into a Sunday School class? I keep all of our children on a Sunday School class roll so that our teachers know who to outreach to, and I use it as a prayer guide as I pray for our children during the week. So, if you aren’t plugged in now, this is a great Sunday to set a goal to begin attending! Also, in our 8:15 a.m., and in our 10:45 a.m. services, our completed Kindergarteners are presented with a Bible to mark their transition from our Preschool Ministry to our Children’s Ministry. I will be in contact with all of our Kindergarten families to see which service you would like to participate in. BUT, if you haven’t heard from me by July 26th, let me know! It is entirely possible that I don’t have current contact information for you. So much to look forward to in the remainder of the summer and looking ahead to the new school year—I hope that you will join us as we seek to raise a generation that knows Christ and makes Him known.

Wee Worship Volunteers We have upcoming needs in the second half of the calendar year in our Wee Worship ministry. Please see the FBC Kids bulletin board for dates that we do not currently have volunteers to serve. If we do not have volunteers for the open dates, we will not be able to offer Wee Worship. Additionally, there will be open dates in the year 2020. Please prayerfully consider serving in this ministry. Volunteers are asked to lead in just two services per year, either in consecutive weeks in the 8:15 a.m. or 10:45 a.m. service, or on one Sunday in both services. If you would like to help in the second half of this year, please sign up on the bulletin board. If you would like to help in the next calendar year, please contact Kelly. All curriculum and activities are provided. Policy Reminder: For the safety and security of our children, our church, and our adult volunteers, it is the policy of FBC Kids; volunteers must be a church member at least 21 years of age and have a background check on file. All classes should be led by an adult who meets the preceding criteria and that there should always be two unrelated adults present or have an “open door” policy. Related adults are welcome and encouraged to serve and will be assisted by a third unrelated adult. Our preschool classrooms all meet this policy with our “Dutch”-style doors that should always be left open when children are present, and there are not two unrelated adults in the room.

Local Missions Washington Parish Food Bank & Thrift Shop Annual recertification for our food bank families has been completed, and about 100 families have been removed from our roll because of their failure to recertify. Whether due to moving out of the parish, not supplying the required paperwork or other circumstances, this decrease in numbers will allow new people to access our services, beginning on Tuesdays only. A huge thank you goes out to Kelly McElveen for organizing the food drive which was conducted during our Vacation Bible School and to those children, parents, and grandparents who donated all the food. The initial count received was 1843 cans. This included many vegetables, fruit, and protein products, all important and very much needed items. We at the food bank very much appreciate all that was given. God bless you for helping.

Ministries of FBC Franklinton We have arrived at a transition point in our church’s life. For these past nine months, the pastor search committee has been privileged to be the focal point of the church’s prayers. We would like to thank the church for the honor of being trusted to serve in this capacity. We thank you for your faithfulness to provide prayer support for this extended time. It has truly been our honor to serve. We are grateful for our ministry staff, Brothers Joey, Cody, Butch and Sister Kelly, who went above and beyond to continue the work of the church as well as the lay ministers who rose to the occasion volunteering their time to assist. Also a thank-you to Natasha Burris for assisting with a large volume of additional work to support the committee while maintaining confidentiality. We would also like to express gratitude to Brothers Bob Adams and Stan Statham for wise counsel throughout the process. I would personally like to thank those members of the committee for their diligence to rearrange schedules to attend meetings and to engage in discussion, research, and prayer, for hundreds of hours. It is now time to move from the past in anticipation of what the Lord has planned next for our church and the part He is calling each of us to fulfill in accomplishing his plan. Pray for Dr. Warren, and his family, as he leads us in our devotion and service to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. David Sylvest Chairman, Pastor Search Committee
