December 2016 A Monthly Newsletter of First Baptist Church

He is Alive! Easter Outreach Easter is approaching, and more people in our area are willing to attend worship and discuss spiritual matters around this holiday than any other time of the year. We are seeking to put a Here’s Hope New Testament and invitation to our Easter services in the homes of all of our friends and neighbors. This will not be through a community blitz, but instead, through each of us being willing to take responsibility for our own neighbors. Would you be willing to give Bibles and invitations to worship to everyone on your street or maybe to your five closest neighbors? If we will, we will exalt Christ by bearing witness to the truth and effect of the Gospel! There are maps and sign-up sheets available so you can commit to engage your neighbors. You may have seen these on the wall in the Family Life Center. We want to make sure we do not overlap or overburden a few willing brothers and sisters. The organization is important, but prayer is essential. Here are some ways you can pray for this effort: •

Pray First Baptist will embrace this effort, and we will have a burden to share Christ with our neighbors.

Pray for your neighbors. Make a list of those you know do not attend worship. Pray for their salvation. Pray the Lord will speak through His Word—the New Testaments placed in each home. Pray they will not be cast aside, but instead read and applied. Pray for those organizing this effort. Pray we will touch as many homes as possible. Pray for our Easter services. Pray Christ will be glorified as we celebrate the hope we have through the resurrection. Pray for the Holy Spirit to call many to salvation! Sign up for prayer prompts online at http://pray4everyhome.com/. This website will send you the names and addresses of five of your neighbors each day you can lift up in prayer. It will also generate a list of your 100 closest neighbors that you can print.

We are not simply trying to fill the sanctuary on Easter Sunday. Easter has historically been our most highly attended Sunday morning of the year. We have the opportunity to glorify our Lord Jesus Christ by heralding and living out the truth of the resurrection! We serve a risen Savior! If we have come to faith in Christ, we died with Him at Calvary and now

have been raised to walk in the newness of life. The resurrection offers the hope of real, eternal, God-glorifying life to all who will come to Christ in faith. This is Good News! We should be sharing this message every day, especially during the week leading up to the holidays celebrating Jesus’ death and resurrection. Carry The Cross: 2017 FBC will continue the tradition of taking up our cross (literally) on Good Friday, April 14th. Our group will begin walking in the Dirt Cheap parking lot at 9:00 a.m. and proceed slowly toward the Fairgrounds. We will take turns carrying a cross along the way. The procession will end at the Fairgrounds stage where we will observe the Lord’s Supper. Many from other churches have participated in this event in the past, and we would love for believers from other churches to take part. T-shirts will be available for free upon request by contacting the church office. We would ask that those who have received one in the past please wear them if possible. There will not be shirts available the day of the event. Participants do not have to wear the event shirt to attend, but it is a blessing to see the unity of the Body of Christ on display as we commemorate the suffering of our Savior, which demonstrated the righteousness of God.

will highlight Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross, followed by our congregational observance of the Lord’s Supper in all three morning worship services. That afternoon we will begin the Bible distribution outreach to our neighbors.

Senior Fest for adults 55+

No one registered to attend the Senior Fest at NOBTS on April 7th, so our participation in that event is canceled.

REACHing In and REACHing Out in Student Ministry

Cody Thomas Youth Minister fbc.codythomas@gmail.com

April 9th is Palm Sunday Our sanctuary choir will be presenting several anthems, all of which

April is an exciting month in my life and the life of the Student Ministry. In my personal life, Mallory and my first baby is to be born the first part of April. We are super pumped to meet and love on our child. We are so thankful for our church family that has loved on us during this time. We are looking forward to bringing our child to church to meet his or her church family. I hope our baby is ready for all the hugs and kisses he or she will get the first time they come to church. As Mallory and I prepare for an exciting month in our life, the Student Ministry is also preparing for an exciting month.

That Friday we will “Carry the Cross,” as we have done for many years, and then together observe the Lord’s Supper at the Fairgrounds. Pray that all of us will engage in serious reflection this week as we ponder the high price that Jesus paid for our sins, and join us in worship on Easter Sunday as we celebrate our Risen Savior.

The month of April is Youth Sunday month! Youth Sunday is a great opportunity for the Student Ministry to lead the church in Bible study and worship. I love Youth Sunday and what it represents for our church. Our church loves the student ministry! I am so thankful for a church family that loves and supports the Student Ministry as all of you do. Just in case you are not familiar with Youth Sunday, the students will lead out all our adult Sunday School classes as well as lead out in all our morning worship services. Youth Sunday is scheduled for Sunday, April 30th.

Calling all current, former, and potential Choir Members In the weeks following Easter Sunday, our sanctuary choir will be presenting a musical entitled “The Church Triumphant.” Won’t you prayerfully consider lending your voice to these great anthems of the Church? The choir continues to rehearse on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. in the choir room. Hope to see you there!

Bro. Butch

Students need to attend at least one of the two training days to learn the Bible study material for Youth Sunday. The training days are Sunday, April 9th, and Sunday the 23rd at 9:30am. April 30th is also Senior Recognition Sunday, where we will recognize our 2017 graduating seniors.

Living Proof Live

June 23-24, 2017

(Friday - Saturday)

Baton Rouge, LA: Baton Rouge River Center Registration Price: $79

Sign-up Sheet is on the WINGS Bulletin board (by the Coke machine) Our food pantry has been open for almost a year now, and we have been blessed beyond measure by the individuals and families that we have had the pleasure to serve through our new type of food distribution. The food options we offer and the choices our clients are now given, have both pleased, and empowered them. We thank God and our church family for the blessings we have experienced through this wonderful ministry. We ask for your continued prayer support, but we also need more volunteers. It is a big job which requires many hours each week. Additional help would lighten the load for us all. Needed right now are: 1) Men with trucks to pick up donated food from Winn-Dixie and Wal-Mart three times a week. 2) Shopper assistants to help families with food selections. 3) Individuals to take full food carts to the shoppers’ cars on Tuesdays and Thursdays. 4) Volunteers to help restock pantry shelves on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

The Thrift Shop’s primary purpose is to generate funds to cover the operating expenses of the building. Such as rent, electricity, water, phones, etc. The added blessing is that anyone who shops with us can find some nice things at a bargain price. It is preferred that donations be dropped off before 3 p.m. on Wednesday or Friday, and items most needed now are household items, such as towels, linens, kitchen supplies, and decorative items. Also, we still need additional volunteers for sorting, folding, and assisting shoppers. Please consider volunteering to help us one day a week, or one or two days a month. Partner with a friend, or even two, and volunteer for the same day and time. I challenge you to prayerfully consider what God would have you do with this ministry opportunity. I promise you that you will receive the greater blessing! Contact Beverly Cooke or call the WPFB at (985) 322-2017 to find out more or sign up to volunteer.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD 2017 Preparations are in Full Swing Margie and I would like to thank the classes that have signed up for Operation Christmas Child packing party collections. Your willingness to participate will be a great help. If your class has not chosen an item to collect, please see the sign-up sheet or give Margie or Sandra a call, and we will be glad to assist you with your choice. Everyone working together can make this packing party the BEST. We will be contacting some ladies and teen girls in the church who can cut out, sew, turn or press material. This year we have a special project for the girls 10-14. We will be making feminine hygiene packages to send them. If you are interested in helping with this project, you can give us a

call, and we will put you to work. Our plan is to have a few workdays at the church on a Saturday and have as many ladies as possible help us with this project. On the OCC table at the entrance to the Fellowship Hall you will find pamphlets that provide information for packing your individual boxes. We encourage each family to give thought to packing a box or boxes, as well as participating in the churchwide efforts. Watch for more information and things that are happening with Operation Christ- If you have questions or need more mas Child in the Sunday School rolls an- information, please contact Margie at nouncements, bulletin, and upcoming 515-7722 or Sandra at 515-5738. newsletters. - Sandra

HONDURAS UPDATE God is so good! In 2010 when Margie and I started taking teams to Honduras we hoped then that one day we would have a church in our villages. Thanks to God's provision and the faithful support of folks like you, this is now a reality. In the village of Buena Vista, Pastor David and his family now have a house to live in with a living room large enough for about 35 people. The house church's name is Iglesia Bautista Palabra de Vida, Word of Truth Baptist Church.

Our food pantry has been open almost a year now, and

This year our mission team’s focus is to build the body of Christ in the village of Buena Vista. Please be in prayer for us as we do Vacation Bible School, some construction projects, and teach the true doctrines of our faith. We would like to see the disciples there making disciples for Christ. Our team dates are June 26th - July 2nd, 2017. God Bless,

Bro. Dale

DARZI MUSLIM UPDATE Several years ago our church began to pray and strategize to see the Darzi Muslims, an unreached people group of more than 1,000,000 strong living in Northern India, reached with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We have partnered with several missionaries in that region and have made two trips focused on locating and evangelizing Darzi people. We believe it is the Lord's desire to see the Good News shared with this people group and a church planting movement begin among them.

Last year we learned of an effort to disciple new Muslim-background believers in the region through the printing and distribution of discipleship materials printed in the Urdu language. Several years ago we assisted in the printing of a new Urdu Bible translation. We connected with E. (His name is not used to protect his identity and work.) E has been working with Muslim background believers for many years and has been leading out in this effort. Our church sent a donation of $5,000.00 to help with the printing of these materials. We have

received a report that our donation was used to print 6,000 devotional books and purchased 750 SD cards to distribute the books electronically. Please pray for the Darzi Muslims, those who will receive these materials, and E as he works to evangelize and equip those leading this effort. Pray our church will be burdened for the Darzi and other Muslims of North India and we will see new ways to engage them with the Gospel.

Principle 2 Earnestly believe that God exists, that I matter to Him, and that He has the power to help me recover. “Happy are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Romans 5:4 Step 2 We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. “For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Philippians 2:13 We have all heard Insanity defined as “doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result each time.” Sanity has been defined as “wholeness of mind; making decisions based on the truth.” Jesus is the only Higher Power who offers the truth, the power, the way, and the life. When we trust Jesus as our true Higher Power, He alone has the power to restore us to Sanity if we surrender all of our life to Him. SANITY

-

Strength Acceptance New Life Integrity Trust Your Higher

Power Strength - When we receive Jesus as our Higher Power; our Lord and Savior, we receive strength to face the fears that, in the past, have caused us to fight, flee, or freeze. Now we can say, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear” (Psalm 46:1-2) and “My mind and my body may grow weak, but God is my strength; he is all I ever need”. (Psalm 73:26). Relying on our power and our strength is what got us off track in the first place. We believed we did not need God’s help, strength, or power.

Choosing to allow your life to be directed by God’s power, not your limited power, will be your greatest strength. God will come in where your helplessness begins. Acceptance – Romans 15:7 says “Accept one another, then, for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.” God’s Word shows us that we can have realistic expectations of ourselves and others. We can learn how to relate to others in a new and different way... God’s way. As we learn what God’s Word teaches, we begin to find the sanity we have been searching. We remember to pray and ask God to give us the courage to change the things we can and to accept the things we cannot change and to depend on Him only. As our faith grows and we develop our relationship with God, it becomes easier for us to accept others as they are, not as we would have them be! With acceptance, however, comes responsibility. We must stop placing all the blame on others for our past actions and hurts. New Life – We all know the feelings expressed in 2 Corinthians 1:8-9 (TLB): “We were really crushed and overwhelmed, and feared we would never live through it. We felt we were doomed to die and saw how powerless we were to help our-

selves; but that was good, for then we put Join us Tuesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. everything into the hands of God.” God alone can save us. We can put Trust – As we surrender our our hope in him that He will lives to God and allow Him to continue to lead and guide us in work in our lives we begin to our times of trouble. trust in our relationships with others and with Jesus. “It is The penalty for our sins was dangerous to be concerned with paid in full by Jesus on the what others think of you, but if cross. In April, we are continuing our prayer focus for Vacation Bible School. In addition, the past prayer needs that I ask you to continue to pray over, this month I encourage you to add the children at our church who will attend Vacation Bible School. There are many of them that will come to know Jesus as their Savior at Vacation Bible School, and we, as a church family, want to hold up to the Lord those that are in our midst week in and week out.

In addition to praying that those children who have not accepted Christ as their Savior would be sensitive to that calling, pray that those who have, would be sensitive to how God is working in their lives, and that they would have a burden for their friends who may not know the Lord. Our own children have a tremendous opportunity for outreach in their daily lives. Join me in praying that they would be used in a mighty way! Finally, CentriKid sign-ups have ended, and all the spots are full with one exception. We need ONE MALE CHAPERONE. This could be one of our older youth that has completed 11th or 12th grade or a parent of a camper. If you are not either of these, but a male that would consider joining us and are a church member with a background check on file, please let me know!

HE IS ALIVE! Easter Outreach Effort Please join me in praying for and considering how you can participate in this upcoming church-wide campaign. In the week preceding Easter Sunday, we will be making an effort to place a Bible along with an invitation to Easter services in the homes of all our friends and neighbors. We will be encouraging our church members to commit to visiting their neighbors. We realize many

of them have a church home, and it is not our desire to keep them from worshipping with their church family. We simply want to remind our neighbors that Jesus Christ is alive, He is worthy of worship, and He offers forgiveness of sin to those who will repent in faith. Many of us live in neighborhoods where we seldom speak to our neighbors. This effort is meant to glorify Christ by engaging our neighbors with the Gospel. You will hear more about the process and plans for this effort in the coming weeks. Begin now to pray for your neighbors. Pray as you drive on your road home each day. Pray the Lord will prepare your neighbors for an invitation to come and join us as we worship the risen King!
