December 2016 A Monthly Newsletter of First Baptist Church
Join Me in Prayer The church as we know it is an interesting organism. In our culture and setting we have unprecedented freedom to grow as disciples, serve in ministry, and even to begin new ministries. Each of us has our own gifts and places of service and often may neglect to remember, appreciate, and pray for others who are serving in other ministries of our local church body. Would you consider joining me in using this weekly prayer schedule below as part of your daily prayer time? If you pray daily using this schedule, you will come along your brothers and sisters serving in nearly every ministry of the church through the power of prayer. Our ministries are just activities, and our people are just volunteers if they are not anointed and empowered by the Spirit of God! Let’s bathe the work of our local church in prayer.
Pray for our support staff: Natasha, Sierra, Leslie, and Ted. Pray they will know how to order time and will be encouraged in their duties. Pray for our lay leadership: Our deacons, Bob Wallace (Deacon Chairman), Linda Crain (Church Administrator), Karen Spears (Sunday School Director), and all of our committee chairs.

REACHing In and REACHing Out in Student Ministry

REACHing In and REACHing Out Summer is officially here! With summer comes two of my favorite things, Vacation Bible School AND Summer Camp. The month of June has both! Vacation Bible School will be June 5th – 9th, and Camp Fuego will be June 19th – 23rd. An exciting month in the life of our church! As we think about what is to come in the month of June, let us not forget WHY we have Vacation Bible School and Summer Camp: These events take place to better equip families to raise their children up to be disciples of Jesus. Let us, as a church, rally around these activities in two ways: Volunteering to lead a position and prayer. We need YOU to pray for VBS and Camp Fuego. Pray that students will respond to the gospel at both VBS and Camp Fuego. Pray for the leaders involved. Pray that God would be glorified at both VBS and Camp Fuego. Thank you so much for all you do as a church. Thank you for supporting the children’s ministry and the student ministry. Thank you!

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Thank you to all those who helped with the sewing day on May 20th. Nine ladies, pressed, cut and sewed fabric while enjoying the fellowship that goes with working on a common goal. Twelve Sunday School classes have signed up to provide items for the church packing party to be held in November before shoebox collection week. We appreciate your willingness to help fill the 850 boxes that are FBC’s 2017 Goal.
If your class has not signed up to provide items, please consider collecting funds for shipping donations. Samaritan’s Purse/OCC has reluctantly found it necessary to increase the per box shipping from $7 to $9 this year due to rising costs; this represents the first increase in over ten years. The $9 donation per shoebox covers:
• •
Collection at 5,000 locations around the U.S. Trucks to transport boxes to eight processing center warehouses to inspect and prepare them for international shipping
COVENANT HOUSE MINISTRIES OF FRANKLINTON First, I want to start by saying how grateful I am to FBC for the prayer, support, and encouragement you have given to Covenant Ministries. Just six months ago eight people started coming together and praying for this ministry. We had only a desire that God had laid on our hearts and wanted to see how God was going to work all of this out. We have come a long way in a short time because of God’s grace. The construction phase will begin as soon as we get an approved set of plans back from the Fire Marshal. We are currently doing remodeling work such as dry wall, flooring, painting, etc. The work that is being done would not be possible if not for the efforts of some great volunteers. If anyone is interested in joining in and helping make this ministry a success, please contact me. We will have an ongoing need as this transition home gets up and running. We at Covenant Ministries are very excited to see God at work already in this ministry and look forward to seeing men’s lives restored through the work of Christ. Once again, thank you so much for the support you have given as brothers and sisters in Christ. God bless! In Christ Alone,
Bro. Mike Drury

CHARLES & JAN MONTGOMERY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Hollie Wascom, daughter of Shanda and Mark Wascom, is a 2017 recipient of the Charles and Jan Montgomery Memorial Scholarship. Hollie, an active member at FBC, plans to attend the University of Louisiana at Monroe and pursue a career in Occupational Therapy. Her outstanding grade point average and overall achievements allowed her to be chosen over many applicants by the scholarship selection committee as this year’s deserving student. For those of you new to FBC, this scholarship has been in existence since 1985 and is managed and distributed by FBC. It is awarded each year to a deserving, college-bound, high school senior who meets certain qualifications. Applications and guidelines for eligibility can be obtained from the church office or through the schools near the end of the school year. If you are looking for a meaningful honorarium or memorial gift, please keep in mind a donation to the scholarship fund. You will not only be helping perpetuate the scholarship, but also helping a worthy student with his or her college expenses.
HONDURAS UPDATE God is so good! In 2010, when Margie and I started taking teams to Honduras, we hoped then that one day we would have a church in our villages. Thanks to God's provision and the faithful support of folks like you, this is now a reality. In the village of Buena Vista, Pastor David and his family now have a house to live in with a living room large enough for about 35 people for worship and teaching. The house church's name is Iglesia Bautista Palabra de Vida, Word of Truth Baptist Church.
This year our mission team’s focus will be to disciple and build the church. We will have a construction team, a VBS ministry, and worship/discipleship services every night. Please pray for our safety to and from Honduras, and for Sam and Peggy, Coy and Morgan, and David and Nellie and their family, and Word of Truth Baptist Church in Buena Vista. We would like to
see the disciples there making disciples for Christ. Our team dates are June 26th-July 2nd, 2017. God Bless,
Bro. Dale
Our food pantry has been open almost a year now, and
Congratulations to Cody and Mallory Thomas, as they have been blessed with an addition to their family, a baby girl.

Recently at Celebrate Recovery we heard a testimony where the speaker, Linda, talked about her struggles with anger, control, and unforgiveness. She had grown up in a good Christian family, attended church regularly, but in the midst of the struggles of her “normal” life, she started depending on herself and blaming others. She realized that her adult life was affected negatively by these struggles and decided to attend Celebrate Recovery meetings to work through these areas of her life that were keeping her stuck. Through the Celebrate Recovery Ministry, Linda learned how her dependence needed to be on Jesus. She learned to surrender the hurts in her life to Jesus consciously and build her life on the foundation of what Jesus taught in the Bible. Because of the positive change and healing in her life, she wanted to help all the other “normal” people at her church. So who are the “normal” people she wanted to
is looking for volunteers to help in the nursery for Tuesday evenings. If you are interested, please contact the office.
Join us Tuesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. help find the freedom and healing she had found? Those normal people are the people who, just like her, attend church on a regular basis, who struggle with shame, guilt, and brokenness. The normal people are those who are hurting and keep their struggles on the inside. The normal people are those who are addicted to a substance, gambling, or pornography. The normal people are those who long to forgive and be forgiven. At Celebrate Recovery there are “normal” men and women who can come alongside you and encourage you as you heal from life’s struggles. At Celebrate Recovery we learn biblical tools to persevere and build a solid foundation of hope in Jesus Christ. At Celebrate Recovery there is Love, there is Healing, and there is Hope!
