December 2016 A Monthly Newsletter of First Baptist Church

Count Your Blessings I love so many of our old hymns. Many are rich in doctrine, theology, and encouragement. This past week I sang “Count Your Blessings”. I had not sung that hymn nor meditated or read its words in many years. The second verse asks, “Are you ever burdened with a load of care? Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear? Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly, and you will be singing as the days go by.” I do not believe dealing with the stress and heartache of our daily lives is quite that simple, but thanksgiving and meditating on the goodness and grace of God is certainly one practice that can help renew our minds. Psalm 107:31 says, “Let them give thanks to the Lord for His faithful love and His wonderful works for all humanity.” The spring and summer are hectic times in the life of the church, filled with a multitude of often unrelated activities. Sometimes busyness (even in the ministry of the church) can create stress and weariness. I find it helpful to stop and reflect on the specific things we have seen the Lord accomplish. I want to thank the good Lord for a few places I have been able to see Him at work in the past month. Dying, death, and funerals may seem like a strange place to start for thanksgiving, but I cannot do otherwise. I have been able to witness the glory of God in the home-

goings of a couple of God’s saints in the past month. Living and finishing well is not measured by the fight we wage to stay alive. It is gauged by our faithfulness to our Lord over a lifetime. This is reflected in the assurance our loved ones have of where we will spend eternity and the encouragement they receive at our passing to emulate our worship and steadfastness. I have been able to rejoice with a couple of families’ memorial services. They were not celebrating their loved one’s passing, but instead, celebrating their life and their Lord. We ought to all thank the Lord for our week of Vacation Bible School. FBC set records for attendance, volunteers, and organization. The impact of this week on the lives of the participants and their families is immeasurable. Many children indicated they were ready to receive Christ. They were counseled from the Word of God regarding their salvation, and their parents were contacted to begin followup. We pray the Lord would grow those seeds to maturity. We thank the Lord for all the workers that gave of their time, energy, and prayers. One of our ladies has been particularly thankful for the group of men who were here each day. She commented that she had never seen so many men willing to help wherever they were needed at VBS.

I want to thank God for the decisions, baptisms, and additions we have seen in our church throughout the past month. Some of these come as answers to prayers that have been offered on the new believer’s behalf for some time; others might have come as a surprise. Each is evidence of God continuing to work in the hearts of people. He is still saving those the Holy Spirit convicts. The Holy Spirit is still moving and growing us toward the image of Christ. Even as I write this article, two groups are away at camp. They have set time aside to be with the Lord, grow in Him, and hear from Him. We have another group preparing to head to Honduras on a mission trip to help encourage and bless our church planters, David and Nellie Lopez, in Buena Vista. GOD IS SO GOOD! We will get tired and frustrated at times with the pace of our lives or the weight of our cares. Our pace can be slowed and our responsibilities lightened through wise, prayerful prioritization, but sometimes we will still get stressed. Take some time to “count your blessings, name them one by one; count your many blessings, see what God hath done!”

“He is my Rock, my Shield, my Fortress. He’s my Salvation and my Strength. He is my Refuge, my High Tower. He’s my Deliverer, so strong. The snares of death, they were surrounding me, but He heard my cry for help. So I’ll stand and trust. I’ll stand in faith. I will not be shaken. Our God will not be moved. Our God will never change. Our God will reign forevermore!” The song is: “I Will Not Be Shaken” by Jacob Park and Tommy Walker. (We have sung it, and we will sing it again.)

REACHing In and REACHing Out in Student Ministry

The song is inspired directly from Psalm 18, where King David recounts his actual deliverance from literal enemies, including King Saul. After describing God in such powerful words, he declares in verse 3, “I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; so

shall I be saved from my enemies.” While crying out to God about the distresses (problems, troubles, sicknesses, issues, questions, etc.…the stuff of life that we all experience), he gets a fresh revelation of Who God is and all that He has done in creation. In the midst of personal reflection about his own relationship with God, he is reminded that God’s word is dependable and that God Himself is a shield for those who trust in Him. With gratitude for deliverance, He declares, “The Lord lives! Blessed be my Rock! Let the God of my salvation be exalted.” Amen!!!

Rev. Joey Miller Associate Pastor

What a joy it has been for Karen and me to move back to Franklinton and to live within walking distance of First Baptist Church. For those of you who may not know, we purchased the First Baptist Church parsonage and have done some remodeling to it. And to put it simply, we are loving the privilege the Lord has given to us to live at 710 10th Avenue. We have also been blessed to reconnect with FBC friends from the past and meet new friends in the fellowship here.

I write these things to remind those of you who have been long time FBC members of what a great church home you have. Thank God every day for it and dedicate yourselves to the Lord as He continues to work through you in His church. I also bring attention to what God is doing here so that those of you who are considering a church home will pray for God’s leadership and consider making First Baptist the place where you and your family can grow in the Lord.

We can see that God is doing a great work here and are excited to be a part of it. From the time one walks in the front door of the sanctuary and is met by friendly greeters, you can sense an excitement about the Lord and His church. There is a sweet fellowship here and a great spirit of worship. We have also noted a strong missions and ministry emphasis here with men and women involved in local ministries as well as teams reaching out to other places in the USA and the world to carry the love of Jesus to others.

After all. a church family is made up of people like you and me who pledge themselves to be servants of the Lord through His church. The church will only be as strong as our commitment to the Lord and our willingness to yield to His Lordship every day. I look forward to getting to know each of you and to ministering together to the glory of the Lord. In His Love,

Joey Miller

Mission Updates

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Did you know? There are so many shoeboxes donated by people like us that it is impossible for all boxes to be distributed in December. Some are delayed by customs officials and “red tape. So some children may receive their gifts during subsequent months. Those children may even now be going through the 12 lessons discipleship classes, The Greatest Journey. Please

pray for the follow-up activities and pray that the children will grow in knowledge of Jesus as their Savior. We are so thankful for the 20 ladies, one young girl, and even one man who have helped in our sewing sessions. We will be cutting and sewing again on Thursday, July 13th, and Saturday, July 22nd.

Please, if you have a sewing machine and can sew a reasonably straight stitch, join us for sewing and fellowship. We need you! Call Sandra McDaniel 515-5738 or Margie Parker at 515-7722 for more information.

HONDURAS UPDATE Dear Church Family, As you get this month’s edition of The Bridge, there is a team of eleven in Honduras doing mission work in the village of Buena Vista. In the past years, we have done Vacation Bible School, and medical, veterinary, construction, and youth ministries. However, this year we are taking a different direction. As I read about the Apostle Paul’s missionary endeavors, I see him going first to the Jews in whatever town the Holy Spirit was leading him, and then reasoning with them about Christ. His aim was to show them the futility of relying on the law, sacrifices, and rituals of Judaism, and that salvation had come to them by grace through faith in Christ alone. Some (a few) could and would accept his message and be saved, but for the most part, the Jews rejected it. Paul would then go to the Gentiles and share the gospel with them. Again, some would accept the message and be saved, and some would reject it. Paul would take those who had repented of sin and believed in Christ and plant a church in that town. Then he would stay in the town instructing these new believers until the church was established, and then the Holy Spirit would move him to the next place.

Paul would (in some cases) make it back to the churches that had been planted, or he would send letters to the ones he could not. His aim in doing so was to strengthen, encourage, and correct the believers of each particular church. His vision was that each member of the local church was to be an indigenous missionary in that town/ region, reaching people for Christ. One person can only do so much, but many can accomplish a lot, and this was Paul’s mission vision for the churches. This is also our mission vision this year: To strengthen, encourage, and correct the believers at Word of Truth Baptist Church in Buena Vista. We want them to know that church membership is not just about coming to church, but also about going and sharing their faith in Christ with their family members, friends, and neighbors in Buena Vista and the surrounding villages. Please keep our team in your prayers. As I write this, I have been informed that it has rained torrentially every day for the past two weeks. Please pray for our safety. Pray that we will teach and preach the Word of God for His honor. Please pray for Pastor David and his family as they minister in the village of Buena Vista. Finally, please pray that truth will reign, that lost sinners will be saved, that God’s kingdom will grow, and that He will be both glorified and magnified. Love to all in Christ,

Bro. Dale Parker

SANCTUARY FUNDING COMMITTEE UPDATE Spiritual Growth through Sacrificial Giving

The Sanctuary Funding Committee is developing plans for at least four different fundraising programs to pay for the new sanctuary. Even though some of these programs are months away, we want our members to have an idea of where we are heading with our overall approach. In this edition, we want to give a brief description of the four programs we intend to pursue. First is a Pledge Campaign. This program will encourage our members to give a specific amount on a regular, monthly basis. The pledge itself is a covenant between God and each member. As such, we intend for all pledges to be anonymous. The total amount pledged will help in crafting additional campaigns. We estimate that approximately 60% of

WASHINGTON PARISH FOOD BANK UPDATE The Washington Parish Food Bank began in June and will complete this month the recertification of all of its families as required annually by Second Harvest. With over 500 families currently on our rolls, this is an immense task which has been made a little easier by the additional help of some new volunteers and the extra training of some long-term volunteers. Thank you to all of those who have been helping these last few months. Without you, this would have been an impossible task. I also want to say a huge thank you to Mrs. Kelly McElveen who again, had the recent Vacation Bible School do a food drive for the Food Bank. We asked for dried beans and boxed macaroni and cheese, and I can honestly testify that it was a huge success. We have never had so many different kinds of dried beans to offer at one time, and our families have loved it. I have heard several of them comment that it has been like going to a real grocery store. Macaroni and cheese has always been a need and is not one of the food items that we can receive from Second Harvest without a cost. Thank you to all the VBS staff and especially the children and their parents who furnished so much food that is already being chosen at our food choice pantry. We have indeed been blessed by your generosity.

I also need to thank the Celebrate Recovery group and the A. W. Robbins Sunday School class who have collected food items recently for the food bank. Thank you also to those of you who continue to come by regularly to drop off extra food. You have all blessed us and the families we serve, and we appreciate your help so much. Both the Food Bank and the Thrift Shop will be closing for a few days in August so that all of our faithful volunteers can have some well-deserved rest. The days closed will be Wed., August 2nd through Tues., August 8th. Except for the monthly Second Harvest food delivery on the morning of the 2nd, there with be no volunteers on site during this time. Last, but definitely not least, we still have an urgent need for some volunteers who will make the commitment to pick up food from Wal-Mart in Bogalusa and Winn-Dixie in Franklinton at least once a week. We could still use more volunteers at the Food Bank and the Thrift Shop too, so please consider this as an opportunity to minister to others. Contact Beverly Cooke or call our office at 322-2017. -

YES Yield myself to God Example is what is important Serve others as Jesus Christ did One of the lessons in Celebrate Recovery is on YES. So many times our first response to something new is to say NO! In CR we are learning to say YES to God. God’s Word is teaching us to change our way of thinking and our perspective. We are learning to: YIELD to God to be used to bring the Good News to others, by my example, and by my words. When we yield to Him, God can use us in ways we never thought possible. Being an EXAMPLE to others is important.

If you want someone to see what Christ will do for them, let them see what Christ has done for you!

3) Volunteers can help with our weekly meeting, nursery and/or help with movie nights/socials.

SERVE others as Jesus Christ did. Jesus said, “And since I, the Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow: do as I have done to you.” (John 13:14-15, TLB)

4) Greeters – Greeters welcome and provide directions for newcomers.

There are many ways FBC members can serve in the ministry of Celebrate Recovery. You can say “YES” in any of the following areas:

There are many, many more ways to serve! Come and get involved! You will be glad you said “YES”! If you would like to volunteer and be involved in this wonderful ministry, talk to any of our leaders or call the church office.

1) Childcare – CR needs volunteers to work alongside our leaders on Tuesday nights. You can volunteer weekly, monthly or a few times a year.

Attend CR and support the ministry! Come and find out what CR is about!

2) Refreshments – Refreshments are a welcomed treat to those attending CR.

June was a whirlwind of a month! As you may have heard, we had our largest Vacation Bible School to date. We had an enrollment of 359 children, with a high attendance day of 328 children! That is almost 100 children more than we have ever had! Over the course of the week, our Bible Study teachers shared the good news of Jesus Christ 1,564 times! Isn’t God good?! Not only that, but the children gave offerings enough to ship 144 Operation Christmas Child boxes…right at $1,300! AND, they collected more than 1,000 food items for the Washington Parish Food Bank!
