“Doing Church” “Doing Church” is a term that has been developed and used in a mostly negative way to denote those whose entire Christian life and walk can be observed in their involvement in what happens at the local church building, like corporate worship, maybe Sunday school, fellowship suppers, etc.… I love the church and believe my Lord Jesus died in order to purchase her with His precious blood. The church is not what we do, a place where we go, but who we are as the Body of Christ. While I believe this deeply and seek to preach and teach it passionately, I think there is a way we can redeem the term “Doing Church” and use it for the glory of God.

many have come through this group over the years or the effect it has truly had in our community. Not only has it been a great encouragement to those who attend, but there is a secondary affect that it has on those who observe it week in and week out. The guys come together and simply “Do Church.” They encourage and love on one another (fellowship), spend about thirty minutes sharing prayer needs and praying (ministry), and then study God’s word for about an hour (discipleship). They are a small part of the Body of Christ gathering in a public place to “Do Church.” Those who see us are confronted with the fact that these guys have a faith that is not just about Sunday and Wednesday nights. These men are There are certain activities we associate really trying to live it out! People see it with “Doing Church.” Several were and respond to it. Some respond by already mentioned above. Others would asking men to bring up their prayer needs include prayer meetings and Bible in the group, others ask what we are studies. What would it look like if all of studying, and some have even joined with us were to start being intentional in us. We have seen men come to Christ seeking ways to “Do Church” in places through this Bible study. Several men who other than the church building? Let me had been hurt by their local church have illustrate with a few examples that are found healing and have reunited with their already going on in our community. own church because they saw some men Most of our congregation already knows “Doing Church” in a public setting. This about the Men’s Bible Study that meets study and others like it are points of light at the Sugar Shack on Thursdays at in our community. 8:00 a.m. This group first met at the Palace and then moved to the Sugar Shack. There is no way to know how

This is not something new or revolutionary. It should be a natural thing for Christians to look for ways to grow in their walk with the Lord, associate and build relationships with other belief's, and have a redeeming influence in locations other than the church building. Some of our ladies have begun a Ladies Bible Study called “Shebrews” that meets on Friday mornings at 8:00 a.m. They have met on the porch at My Morning Grind, but are moving to the Sugar Shack for the winter months. The workers out at Pope Brothers Dairy, along with several other men from the community, meet every Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. for a time of Bible study. (One of the blessings about these kinds of groups is how open people often are to meeting with people of other denominations or those from other local churches.) There is no fear or awkwardness in these meetings over any perceived competition. Everyone is there for the same reason, to glorify Christ through Christian growth in the Word of God. I know of others in our church that use opportunities afforded in their workplace to pray with others and witness. Some of our guys that work offshore lead and/or participate in Bible Studies out on the rig. We do not leave the Lord Jesus at the church building, at home, or at the dock. He is with us.

God thanks and glory. King David said, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His faithful love endures forever.” (I Chron. 16:34) A thankful heart enables us to sing to the Lord in the midst of the troubles and challenges of life.

Adult Fellowship Ministry

Rev. Joey Miller Associate Pastor of Pastoral Care fbc.joeymiller@gmail.com

Join us!

Life is full of challenges for all of us. By its nature, life is tough. The book of Job says that trouble comes to man as surely as sparks fly upward. Jesus said, “You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.” Caleb also said some encouraging words for our times of challenge. Moses had appointed a group to check out the promised land. They came back with a negative report which upset the people. However, Caleb stood to encourage God’s people. In Numbers 13:30 we read, “Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, ‘Let us go up at once and take possession for we are well able to overcome it.'”

How can we be so positive in a negative world? How can we overcome with all the problems and challenges that come our way? When we have bad days, how can we be so sure everything is going to be alright? When we study the lives of great people in the Scripture who overcame, we find some common traits: 1. They were focused on the Lord God and not on their problem or challenge. Caleb saw the same challenges as everyone else. He saw them through the focus of his God. 2. They had faith to take God at His Word. Caleb knew that the Lord had promised this land to them. He was simply believing God and standing on His Word. 3. They remembered the Lord’s blessings and were careful to give

Senior Adults face many issues in life that could give us an attitude of discouragement and cynicism. So we need to encourage one another to focus on God, take Him at His Word, and practice a lifestyle of thanksgiving – not just during this season, but every day of our lives. The purpose of our Senior Adult Ministry is to encourage one another through fellowship and ministry together. Some of our opportunities to encourage one another in November include: 

The Adult 55+ Luncheon on Friday, November 3rd at 10:30 a.m. The meal will be catered turkey and dressing courtesy of our Senior Adult Ministries. Be sure to invite a friend! Worship Ministry at Good Samaritan Nursing Home Thursday, November 9th at 3:00 p.m. The Operation Christmas Child packing party on Sunday, November 12th at 6:00 p.m. The WPSO Senior Adult Luncheon on Thursday, November 16th at 10:30 a.m. Worship Ministry at Heritage Manor Monday, November 20th at 3:00 p.m.

I Thessalonians 5:11 – Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.

“On that day David decreed for the first time that thanks be given to the Lord by Asaph and his relatives.” (I Chronicles 16:7) The ark of the covenant had been returned to Jerusalem and set up in a tent specially prepared by King David. There was a huge celebration with appointed singers who were instructed to “Raise their voices with joy accompanied by musical instruments— harps, lyres, and cymbals.” You can read about it in chapters 13-16 of I Chronicles. There you will find the Psalm that David wrote for the occasion. Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; proclaim his deeds among the peoples. Sing to him; sing praise to him; tell of all his wondrous works! Honor his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Go there and read the entire Psalm as you prepare your heart and your family to observe Thanksgiving Day on the 23rd of this month. These folks were literally commanded by their King to be thankful as they reflected on all that God had done for them.

It is far too easy sometimes to allow routine and ritual to dilute the intensity of our praise and thanksgiving in worship. Surely, when we think about the cross and the mercy and grace it displays, we should not need external prompting to be grateful. Should not praise and thanksgiving erupt from deep within us because of what the Lord has done? Perhaps we should reevaluate our own “attitude of gratitude,” with repentance and determination to express our gratefulness when we worship together and even in the ordinary pursuits of our everyday lives. “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. For the Lord is good, and his faithful love endures forever; his faithfulness, through all generations.” Psalms 100:4-5 Look, (think about, investigate, meditate on, consider, evaluate, and ponder) what the Lord has done! And be grateful. Piano Praise is back this year! On Sunday, November 26th, following Thanksgiving Day, there will be two performances, one at 2:00 p.m. and another at 5:00 p.m. Musicians are already practicing weekly for the event, and you will certainly want to plan to attend this unique offering of worship to our Lord. Please be in prayer for all the musicians, singers, and directors who will lead us. It will literally be “Piano Praise” with some singing and ringing to close out the Thanksgiving holiday. Please help us spread the word; and, as always, to God alone be the glory!

REACHing In and REACHing Out in Student Ministry

Youth Evangelism Celebration (YEC)

Rev. Cody Thomas Student Pastor

$85 per person to attend

fbc.codythomas@gmail.com

See Bro. Cody for more details

The What and the Why of Student Ministry Defining Student Ministry is somewhat easy: the evangelism and discipleship of teenagers. We can stretch out this definition even further: teenagers coming to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior and learning how to follow Him in all aspects of their lives. That is Student Ministry … intentionally investing in the lives of teenagers so that God’s glory is seen in their lives! Student Ministry is not programs, it is not games, it is not babysitting, it is not age separation so that the adults can learn better … Student Ministry is a ministry (meeting needs) that specifically targets teenagers with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Student Ministry targets teenagers … this is not easy. Teenagers are experiencing the most dramatic internal changes of their lives, they are borderline crazy, and they bring this craziness with them everywhere. Teenagers are the only group within the church that will let you know when they really do not want to be

at the church. Think about this: preschoolers are pretty much happy wherever they are, children can almost always get along with adults and have a pleasant time at church, college students normally only come to church out of a desire to be there, young adults are the same way, and medium to senior adults come to church out of a desire to be there. Teenagers, on the other hand, are sometimes forced to be there, and unlike children, they will let you know when they do not want to be at church. Many teenagers come to church because their significant other is at church. Many teenagers come to church because it is fun to hang out with people their own age. Regardless of the why teenagers come to church, the task of Student Ministry is to intentionally invest in each student’s life so that God’s glory can manifest in them and through them … this is not an easy task. God does not call His followers to an easy task; He calls us to be obedient and to walk in faith … even amid rebellious teenagers (kind of like Daniel in the lions’ den). Occasionally, teenagers are looked down upon in the culture. They are seen as disrespectful, lazy, technology-driven, google generation, rebellious, rude, loud,

and undignified within the church. These reasons and so many others are why we shy away from doing Student Ministry. However, these reasons are the WHY we should do Student Ministry. Our great God and King can take a disrespectful, lazy, technology-driven, think they know it all because of google, rebellious, rude, loud, and somewhat undignified teenager and change them to live a life to glorify the Lord in every aspect of life. Most believers today can trace their salvation back to their teenage years. Because even amid all the craziness, God works in the lives of teenagers. Teenagers are impressionable, and our God often calls and uses the very young … this is the why of Student Ministry. Let us be the church that intentionally invests in the lives of teenagers so that God’s glory will manifest in their lives. Let us be the church that sees teenagers and the family unit as an opportunity to live out the Great Commission and make disciples of the next generations’ leaders. “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” – 2 Corinthians 13:14

Everyone may have turkey and dressing and Christmas to-dos on their mind, but all I can think about lately is summer camp! It may still be more than 6 months away, but signups begin now! CentriKid 2018 is tentatively scheduled for July 19th-23rd a 4-night camp this year, back by popular demand! We will be returning to Timber Creek Campground in Pulaski, MS from Thursday, July 19th until Monday, July 23rd. (The dates are currently tentative because we are on the waiting list. This camp filled up after only being open for registration for 2 days! Luckily, we are the first ones on the waiting list and shouldn’t have a problem getting in, but just in case, I also have backup dates reserved for the same location. We will know for sure on February 15th.)

To our church family, you will notice a Christmas tree near our FBC Kids bulletin board with lots of ornaments. Many people have asked about how to go about sponsoring a child, so I decided that with the Christmas season approaching, a giving tree would be one of the best ways. WASHINGTON PARISH FOOD BANK UPDATE

COVENANT MINISTRIES OF FRANKLINTON

Do not grow weary in doing good. ~ 2 Thessalonians 3:13

With the passing of Debbie Richardson on October 15th, 2017, we lost a dear friend and supporter. She was the guiding force behind the Food Bank for over ten years, and the choice pantry we now operate was her dream. Unfortunately, she had to step down due to illness in February, but she continued to be the inspiration that kept us going. Even now as she is whole again and rejoicing with her Lord, we will miss her but will not forget her kind and caring spirit which shaped the Food Bank into what it is today. It will always be a part of her legacy and a testimony to the love she had for God and His ministry.

in their donations which has greatly affected what we, as a local food bank, can order. However, we have also seen the Lord at work, such as when the dry beans were almost gone, and literally, a carload of peanuts, a reliable source of produce, arrived in the donations from Wal-Mart. Then just as that was almost gone, six cases of 24 packs of red beans came to us by way of a very special couple who had some friends who just happened to find them after a tenant vacated a rental. Thank you, Jean and Jimmy, for passing them on to the food bank.
