New Growth in the Word this Spring We are always looking for ways to connect our Bible studies: family, small group, and sermons. Many people are very comfortable participating in several different disconnected Bible studies on a weekly basis. I have always longed to dig deep into a single book of the Bible or theological/doctrinal concept for a period and then move on to another. Part of this may simply be due to my fleshly nature. I have never been able to do much more than one thing at a time. While our church has been successful over the past several years in connecting our family Bible readings and our Sunday morning sermon, this year we went one step further by bringing both under the suggested texts outlined through our Explore the Bible Sunday School quarterly. This has had its challenges, especially in the areas of daily readings and memory verses. I have greatly enjoyed our time in Acts and the study of the ministry of the Apostle Paul. We will be starting a study in 1 and 2 Corinthians in March. Last quarter those of us in the Explore the Bible series studied the beginnings of the church at Corinth and the ministries of Paul and Apollos in that city. In 1 and 2 Corinthians, it is often overshadowed by Paul’s epistles to the Romans and the Ephesians in regards to doctrinal teaching, but the letters to the Corinthians have teachings which are especially relevant to disciples today.

immorality and the patronage of the Temple of Aphrodite. There was even a euphemism used during that period to characterize a person involved in immoral living. They were called Corinthians. It was within this culture that the Lord called Paul to plant a church. The light of our Lord Jesus was able to shine brightly in the midst of this dark culture. The message of Paul to the Corinthian church is a relevant message today. Just like the church at Corinth, our church is positioned as a beacon of hope in the midst of an ever darkening culture. The culture is always pulling at the church, and our members are tempted to engage in activities which would gratify our flesh, but also destroy our witness and effectiveness. In Corinth, there was negligence in church discipline, unholy living and promiscuity among the membership, misunderstandings over what was permissible, divisions based upon personalities in leadership, and selfishness in relationships. Any of this sound familiar? There was a need for renewed repentance, humility, unity, and holiness in the church. Both of the Corinthian letters have a strong tone of correction, but hold deep teaching in practical theology for our relationships with Christ and one another.

Our winter Bible Study will conclude on the Sunday evening of March 4th. The following week we will begin a series on the life of David which will take us through Corinth was a Greek city not far from the the month of May. I have enjoyed hearing academic/cultural center of Athens. from different preachers and teachers Corinth was a port city known for its during our study in 1 Peter and look

forward to having a similar format in this series. We have been blessed to see several men called to the ministry from our church body in the past several years, and several other ministers brought into our congregation through a transitional time, new ministry assignments, or retirement. I outlined the life of David and have asked nine surrendered men at different stages in their spiritual and ministry development to take a segment of scripture covering a period in the life of David and seek the Lord’s direction in preparing a message from that part of David’s life. I was encouraged greatly in my time with the Lord and the word as I was outlining this series. I cannot wait to see how the Lord will speak through these men as they preach from those passages.

Spring Is In The Air King Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 3, “To everything there is a season…” March begins the season of baseball, softball, gardening, and a whole host of other outdoor activities. It is also the month in which we focus on Easter and the glorious resurrection of our Lord. All this makes it a great month to emphasize reaching out and ministering to others in the name of the Lord. As you can see below and throughout this month’s Bridge, we have a lot going on. Thanks to all those who make the ministries happen.

Rev. Joey Miller Associate Pastor of Pastoral Care fbc.joeymiller@gmail.com

Upcoming Events

Much thanks to our men who have already been busy ministering. A group of our men recently built a ramp for one of our homebound families who really needed it. We want to encourage all our classes and groups this Spring to plan a ministry project that will show the compassion of Christ to those who need it. Our Louisiana Baptist Convention and Washington Baptist Association have set aside Saturday, April 21st, for “Here For You” Ministry Day. This will be a great opportunity to do a group project for a homebound or another person in need. It is also a good time to hand out Bibles or set up a prayer canopy in a local parking lot to pray for others and invite them to church. We are only limited by our imaginations as to the activities that could be planned by our groups to show the love of the Lord to others. However, you do not have to wait until then to plan and carry out a project of compassion. You might want to do something around Easter. MARCH ADULT 55+ LUNCHEON – Friday, March 2nd, at 10:30 a.m. with program guests Tren Garbo and Derek Covert from Our Lady of the Angels Hospital in Bogalusa. The luncheon meal will be ham and potluck. Sign up in Sunday School or call the church office. Chelsea Stringfield and Becky Larkins from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Refuge will also be with us to preview our March

29th trip to the refuge. We will visit/ tour the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Refuge on Thursday, March 29th. Meet at the church at 8:45 a.m. and plan on a Dutch treat lunch at a local restaurant. A New/Prospective Members Orientation Class has been scheduled for those who have joined in recent months and for those interested in church membership and making the most of their membership in the body of Christ. The orientation class will meet Sunday, March 18th at 8:15 a.m. in the 12:2 Classroom in the Office Annex. We will address those questions that one might not have had the opportunity to ask. The class will also introduce the participants to the many opportunities for growth and ministry at First Baptist Church. Those participating will receive a book as a gift from First Baptist Church and a tour of the facilities for anyone interested. Please call the church at 985-839-3427 to register. We will be doing an Easter outreach card for members to use to invite friends, neighbors, and family to our Easter Services on April 1st. This is one of the most significant times to reach others, and it is a time when typically, the unchurched will consider coming to church. These cards will be available later this month for you to hand out or mail to those you want to invite. MARK YOUR CALENDAR – Sunday, May 6th – Senior Adult Sunday at First Baptist Church. Also, that week – May 7th-11th except for Wednesday – will be our area Senior Adult Revival.

Happy Birthday “1 Corinthians 1:18 says ‘…the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God.’ In that moment on the cross when Jesus cried, ‘It is finished,’ it was by the power of God that His death paid our sin debt. Because of that death, we can stand before the Father, and instead of seeing us guilty and condemned, He sees us through the blood of Christ as not guilty and forgiven.”

“Redeemed…By the Blood of the Lamb” “Few words in the believer’s heart are as precious and significant as the word ‘redeemed.’ It is a word of assurance that we are saved from the punishment we deserved. It is a word that declares the love God has for us and the love we return to Him. It is a label we joyously wear for the world to see. Ultimately, it is a word of praise and gratitude. Praise You, Lord, that You are our Redeemer. Thank You that redeemed is how You see us.” “Jesus came to earth so long ago to redeem all of us who would reach out to Him in faith. He also came to redeem every part of our lives—our physical needs, our emotional wounds, and our spiritual emptiness. We only need to respond to His call: Come and be made whole!”

The quotes above are from the narration in our Easter musical, “Redeemed By the Blood of the Lamb.” We will celebrate together the gift of redemption which comes to us only through the precious shed blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. We will reflect on what it means to be made whole in body, soul, and spirit through the grace, love, and mercy of God. The musical contains both old and new songs, all of which remind us of the redeeming power of Jesus and what He has done for His people. Note: This year, we will present the musical just one time.. during the 10:45 a.m. worship service on Palm Sunday, March 25th. We are blessed in countless ways, the greatest of which is the redemption of our souls. Over the next few weeks, we will sing about the cross, Jesus’s love for us, His sacrifice on the cross, and then, on April 1st, Easter Sunday, the resurrection! It will be a significant time of worship and celebration, so be present, join the singing, pray earnestly, reflect on the word preached, and thank God that you have been “Redeemed By the Blood of the Lamb”.

Need to Escape? I feel like there are times when we, because of our circumstances, find it hard to see the blessings we have in Christ. Suffering, trials, tribulations, temptations … happen to each one of us, and many times those cloud our view of the Lord’s blessings in our lives. One of my favorite Christian bands, Rend Collective, has a song entitled “Counting Every Blessing.” Read the lyrics and let them be a reminder of the blessings we have in Christ. I was blind, now I'm seeing in color I was dead, now I'm living forever I had failed, but You were my Redeemer I've been blessed beyond all measure I was lost, now I'm found by the Father I've been changed from a ruin to treasure I've been given a hope and a future I've been blessed beyond all measure I am counting every blessing, counting every blessing Letting go and trusting when I cannot see I am counting every blessing, counting every blessing

Surely every season You are good to me Oh-oh-ooh, oh-oh-ooh-oooh (You are good to me) Oh-oh-ooh, oh-oh-ooh-oooh (You are good to me) You were there in the valley of shadows You were there in the depth of my sorrows You're my strength, my hope for tomorrow I've been blessed beyond all measure As we see in the lyrics of this song as well as we see throughout scripture, God does not promise us health, wealth or good fortune but what He gives us is Himself. No matter the season of life you are in right now, you have blessings in Christ Jesus. Whatever happens to us in this life, we can boldly proclaim that we are “blessed beyond all measure” because of what Jesus did for us on the cross. Thank you for reading … let us be the church that declares we are “blessed beyond all measure” because of the hope and assurance we have in Christ Jesus our Lord.

WASHINGTON PARISH FOOD BANK UPDATE Do not grow weary in doing good. ~ 2 Thessalonians 3:13 In less than two weeks this past month, we have been able to minister to two individuals and two families who have lost their homes to a fire. They are referred to us by the Red Cross, and we can give them food and up to three sets of clothes. We were also able to provide formula and baby food for the youngest in the family of ten who had lost everything. Coats or sweaters and shoes were even found for some of them.

I also need to say a very heartfelt thank you to a few individuals who went above and beyond to meet an important need last month. A thrift shop elsewhere was closing and contacted me to offer some of their racks and merchandise. Ron Pope came in about this same time, and I asked him if he knew anyone who had trailers that we might be able to use. In a matter of minutes, Ron volunteered to just DO IT. I promise that was NOT the purpose of my initial question to It is at times like this that you can him. Shoebox Gifts Open Doors Pastor Marco bicycled more than two hours to Kitomondo, an unreached rural community famous for witchcraft in Tanzania, Africa. When he first went there, he felt he had failed, because the people cursed him and cast witchcraft spells on him. However, Pastor Marco prayed for God to make a way to reach the people for Christ. God answered his prayers, and he returned to the village with “a very tangible demonstration” of Christian love in 500 Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts for their children. Pastor Marco said, “These people without Jesus are in bondage, but through the gift boxes He has made them receptive to us. I do not need a car. I do not need money. I just need shoeboxes.” Praise God that now Maranatha Church of Kitomondo is an established church. (Read the entire story at www.samaritanspurse.org/OCC.) Please prayerfully consider how many shoebox gifts you can pack and send to help spread the gospel of Jesus Christ and to help start new churches all over the world. In Christ’s love,
