REACHing In and REACHing Out in Student Ministry

Will YOU join me in PRAYER? The Lord hears our prayers, and He responds, “By awesome deeds you answer us with righteousness, O God of our salvation, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas.” (Psalm 65:5). James reminds us in his letter to the believers in the dispersion, “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”

Will YOU join me in PRAYER?

Instead of intentionally praying for our students one week out of the year, would you join me in praying for our students year around? Will YOU join me in PRAYER? Student Ministries across our parish are doing a few things differently this school year, and we covet your prayers. Will you join me in praying for Student Ministries across our parish? For this school year, Student Ministries across our parish will be intentionally focusing on lost students coming to know Jesus Christ. To empower and encourage Christian students to reach lost students our parish association is doing three student ministry rallies. Will you join me in praying for these three rallies?

During these rallies, we hope to be more intentional than we ever have before. Our first rally on Sunday, September 23rd we are going to have an intentional time of prayer with students and for the lost teenagers in our communities. We covet your prayers. Will YOU join me in PRAYER? Prayer request you can begin praying for: 1. Pray for the lost teenagers in our communities. 2. Pray that our Student Ministry at FBC will reach out to these lost teenagers. 3. Pray for our parish-wide events that are geared toward students coming to know Jesus. 4. Monday, September 17th at 3:00 p.m. Worship at Heritage Manor

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is guarded 24/7 every day 365 days a year. So as the threat of Hurricane Isabel bore down on Washington D.C., the city and the government began to prepare. Congress, Senate, and government buildings all shut down for reasons of safety. The soldiers who guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were given a contingency plan so that they too would be out of harm’s way. However, when given a choice, the soldiers chose to remain on duty citing that what they did in guarding the tomb as more than a privilege to be dismissed in inclement weather. It was their sacred honor. Through conditions of bitter cold and blazing heat, even through torrential rain and the dangerous wind storms of hurricanes that have come and gone, they remain faithful at their post. Thirty-eight of our Adult 55+ group had the privilege recently to tour the National World War II Museum. The magnitude and scope of the information on exhibit were beyond one’s ability to digest in a day. It was a blessing to be reminded of the courage and sacrifice demonstrated by our heroes of war. The stories of these soldiers who were faithful in the face of danger and fear caused a sense of patriotic pride and duty to rise in all of us. Their examples of faithfulness were calls to us to be faithful to honor and preserve the freedoms and truths for which so many of them died. As Christians, we cannot escape hearing God’s call to us to be faithful as soldiers of the cross. The Lord Jesus even called us to “be faithful to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life (Revelation 2:10). It blesses me to see the faithfulness of our leaders, volunteers, and church members in these days. Our Sunday School

attendance has been increasing, and on a recent Sunday, we had 31 visitors reported in our Bible Study classes. That shows the faithfulness of our members. Our last Sunday School leaders meeting had a tremendous attendance with only a few absent, proving that our leaders are heeding God’s call to be faithful. Of all the characteristics that could be pointed out regarding a Christian, the Apostle Paul seemed to single out that of faithfulness. We may not be able to do everything, but we can be faithful, and we can look forward to His words, “Well done my good and faithful servant.” SAM ADULT 55+ LUNCHEONS The September 7th Monthly Fellowship Luncheon will be a potluck at First Baptist. Bring your favorite dish and enjoy the fellowship and the music of Bobby and Jean Sauls. The October luncheon will also be at the church and will feature “fair food” and our speaker Bro. Joe Baugh. As always, invite a friend to join the fun. Looking to November, we will hit the road and go to Middendorf’s for our luncheon. BOGALUSA AREA SENIOR ADULT REVIVAL The Bogalusa Area Senior Adult Revival is scheduled for September 10th -12th beginning at 9 a.m. each day. We had a group of our folks that attended last year. Details are coming soon. NURSING HOME WORSHIP SERVICES Good Samaritan – Thursday, Sept. 13th at 3 p.m. Heritage Manor – Monday, Sept. 17th at 3 p.m. PIGEON FORGE TRIP IS ALMOST FULL We only have three or four openings available for this great trip to see the beautiful Smokies, hear some great gospel music, and attend some wonderful shows in Pigeon Forge. Happy Birthday to our

They write the following: “Though maybe misunderstood, regularly a bone of contention, and often under-practiced, congregational singing is one of the greatest and most beautiful tools we have been given to declare God’s excellencies, strengthening His Church and sharing His glory with the world. The New Testament implies that our singing is important. It’s been said that Christians are a singing people—but often, many of us are really more of a mouthing-along-with-thewords kind of people.”

Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord, let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. (Ps. 95:1-2)

In their new book entitled Sing, Keith and Kristy Getty share a sense of calling to remind and encourage all Christian churches that we are created and gifted to worship God and that much of that worship is centered around singing. “For the Church has been, is, and always should be and can be a joyfully singing Church. In a sense, singing is part of what we exist to do. The apostle Peter wrote to local churches that each of them was part of “a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 Pet. 2:9 ESV). Paul told the members of the church in Ephesus to be “speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit.” He wanted them to “sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Eph. 5:19-20).”

There are too many churches today where most of the singing happens on the platform and not in the pews. Thankfully, ours is not one of those. However, we all would do well to think about why we sing…or why we don’t. God created us with a voice and singing is by His design. In a trip through any hymn book, we find songs of praise, songs of testimony, songs of thanksgiving, songs declaring the attributes of God, songs of faith or trust or hope, songs about His return or our destination, songs about our mission and evangelism, and many more. In recent decades, God has raised up even more gifted songwriters, who have given us more and more songs to enhance our worship. For those of you who joyfully sing with the church gathered to worship, keep it up and sing even louder! For those who do not usually enter into the singing, remember it’s not about your ability or the sound of your voice. Singing doesn’t originate in the voice box; it starts in the heart! Everyone can sing! Your song doesn’t have to be “in tune” or as good as your favorite soloist; but, if you’ve been born again, you have a song to sing. Just let it out! Please don’t leave the singing to the choir or praise team or any others. Be one of them! “Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord…” Our two children’s choirs, the bell choir, and the senior singers have all resumed, as Fall activities are in full swing. Of course, our choir and praise teams continue to prepare each week to lead in worship, and our sanctuary choir will begin soon to prepare seasonal music for Christmas. Thanks to all our leaders for their continuing devotion to the worship ministry here at First Baptist Church. I am grateful to have Bro. Bob and Mrs. Janice fully on board to lead us during this interim period. As we pray for their ministry among us, we also pray diligently for our pastor-search committee; and with them, we are already anticipating the arrival of our next pastor, who, for now, is known only to God. May the next chapter in the life of our church unfold with all of us continuing to invest our lives to the glory of God.

Last month, due to space constraints, I didn’t get to share many pictures of some of our summer outings and special events. Summer really was great, wasn’t it? Hot, but great! So many special memories, so many seeds planted. Between Vacation Bible School, CentriKid camp, and I Love Tuesday events, we engaged well over 400 individual children with over 1,000 opportunities for the gospel seed to be planted or watered. And, I am so thankful for the many, many volunteers who come alongside me each summer to do just that! So, whether you were involved in a very hands-on way, in a support role, or on bended knee in prayer, THANK YOU! While I know quite well that it is God who does the saving, I appreciate each one of you that are willing to be the hands and feet of Jesus during the busy-ness of the summer!

Sixth graders, who have been sitting in on our Team KID meetings, will soon be beginning Higher Calling, a special Bible study time just for 6th graders. Our Higher Calling leaders are Mrs. Kristina Seal and Mrs. Sierra Smith; they both are looking forward to spending some time digging deeper into God’s Word with our Children’s Dept. “Seniors” before they graduate to Youth.

As I encourage you to look back over the summer in pictures, I also encourage you to look forward. There is one very special “once every few years” outreach opportunity that we will have in October. There Is No Quest Without Questions The crooked punctuation mark at the end of a sentence speaks of curiosity, interest, and perhaps doubt. A question is an invitation to vulnerability, to intimacy. The Bible does not shy away from such an invite. Over and over we see the people of God asking questions of their Creator. We also see the God of the universe asking questions of His creation. The Quest is a challenge to accept the invitation. In this six-week excursion with Jesus, Beth Moore uses questions from Scripture to lead you into intimacy with the One who knows you best. Learn to dig into the Word, to respond to the questions of God, and to bring your questions before Him. Let the crooked punctuation mark be the map that points you into a closer relationship with the Father.

WASHINGTON PARISH FOOD BANK UPDATE Do not grow weary in doing good. ~ 2 Thessalonians 3:13 September begins the second month after completing the annual recertification of families as required by Second Harvest, our partner agency in food distribution. Here are some of the facts that have come out of this process: 387 individuals and/or families completed the recertification process during the months of May through July. 54 new individuals and/or families have enrolled in the food bank in the five Tuesdays available so far as of this writing. 878 is the total number of individuals, both children and adults, who are now eligible to receive services from the food bank each month. Each person leaves the food bank with approximately 45 pounds of food that they have chosen for themselves and their families. Each month approximately 19,000 pounds of food is distributed to our families. This includes food from Second Harvest, Wal Mart in

Bogalusa, Winn Dixie in Franklinton, donations of food from individuals and food drives, and some canned vegetables purchased by us from the monetary donations of others. Now, what does this all mean for the families of First Baptist Church of Franklinton? I hope you see that the need for this ministry is great, and we need your continued support - in prayer, in food donations, in money if you are able, through food drives, or in becoming one of our volunteers. These needs are vital to our operation and in our mission to help stop the hunger that truly really exists in our parish. This is a real issue for hundreds of individuals that you cross paths with every day. Don’t become complacent or deny this problem exists in our community. It is very real and anything, no matter how small, can make a difference. You can be that person who makes the difference and blesses the life of someone else. Please call me at 322-2017 if you want to help change a life. Food items most needed this month are canned vegetables, such as corn, green beans, mixed vegetables, sliced potatoes, carrots, sweet peas, and grits.

WHAT GOES INTO THE BOX IS FUN. WHAT COMES OUT IS ETERNAL. As Operation Christmas Child celebrates 25 years of delivering a total of 157 million shoebox gifts to boys and girls in over 160 countries, we know that First Baptist Franklinton has been a small part of the effort to reach children with the good news of Jesus Christ. Many children's lives have been transformed by learning about the God who loves them and the Christians like YOU who cared enough about their eternal souls to pack and send a simple gift lovingly. Each box packed with school supplies, hygiene items, and fun toys presents an outreach opportunity to reach people groups who may never have heard of our Savior. Families are being saved, and churches are being planted. Are you praying how the Lord would have you participate in OCC? Only two months remain until OCC shoebox gifts are collected during the week of November 12-19. Pick up a box in the displays at church. Give a fun gift with eternal impact.
