Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCCL) in August 2012 announced the promotion of seasoned travel and hospitality executive Michael Bayley to President and CEO of premium cruise brand Celebrity Cruises, succeeding Dan Hanrahan, who resigned in early July to become president and CEO of hair salon giant Regis Corporation. Bayley’s career with RCCL spans 30 years. In his former role as executive vice president of operations for Royal Caribbean International, Bayley oversaw the brand’s Hotel Operations; Marine Operations for Royal Caribbean International and Azamara Club Cruises; Land Operations for Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity 14 Cruising Magazine • Third Quarter 2012
Prior to that, as RCCL’s executive vice president, International, Bayley was responsible for the strategic international business development of Azamara Club Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean International. Over the course of just four years, he established 11 regional offices around the world, which now generate more than 50 percent of the corporation’s total revenue. “In his role as executive vice president, International, Michael successfully spearheaded our aggressive expansion efforts into emerging and high-growth markets, and most recently oversaw all operations for Royal Caribbean International,” said RCCL’s Chairman and CEO Richard D. Fain. Earlier, Bayley served as senior vice president, Hotel Operations for Royal Caribbean International, leading the worldwide hotel operations and onboard revenue of 21 cruise ships and 30,000 employees. Prior to that, he served as chairman and managing director of Island Cruises, plc, a joint
venture cruise line and tour operator launched in 2002 by RCCL and British tour operator First Choice Holidays. Bayley began his career in 1981, working in a variety of shipboard and shoreside positions with increasing management responsibility, including that of vice president of Total Guest Satisfaction, Fleet Operations. He also served as vice president of one of the world’s largest premium gaming resorts, Caesars Palace Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas. Bayley has taken over at Celebrity at a crucial time for the cruise line, with the fifth in the five-ship Solstice class fleet soon to be delivered. Celebrity Reflection—the 11th ship in the fleet— launches in Europe in October, capping a major growth period for the brand. With the increased capacity, Bayley must play an integral role in growing awareness of the brand and maximizing revenues, and he certainly has the experience to do so. “Fortunately, Celebrity has a very strong management team to build on, and I am delighted that Michael is bringing his vision, passion and drive to bear on the continued growth of this important brand,” said Fain.

ver 100 Platinum Members and more than 20 cruise executives from the various FCCA Member Lines congregated in Panama City, Panama June 23-26 for the FCCA PAMAC Event. Here, over a schedule of meetings, receptions and specialized activities, the Platinum Members had prime opportunities to discuss trends, develop ideas, promote their products and destinations and develop or cultivate lasting and worthwhile relationships with some of the most significant decision makers in the industry—cruise executives varying from the fields of shore excursions, port operations, itinerary development, product development and more. All of this while learning about and from Panama’s destination product and seeing some of the
best the generous Panamanian partners and sponsors had to offer. From arrival to departure, the agenda was stacked with meetings and structured functions designed to foster the development of working relationships, the exchange of ideas and promotion of the members’ products. It began on June 24th, where attendees sampled what the stunning Las Parlas Island and Isla Viveros had to offer before preparing for the opening ceremony and business card exchange, in which the members and executives met or reacquainted themselves while discussing any recent trends, developments, ideas, etc. One of the main features of these events is the collaboration that is pos-
sible through bringing together some of the premier players of the destinations’ private and public sectors along with the executives, for this is the best way to learn from each other. By joining them in a casual atmosphere, conversation flows freely and guarantees that every member has the ability to interact with executives, comfortable enough to speak with the same freedom and say what is on their mind and ask the necessary questions. June 25th brought the attendees to depart from the Corozal Train Station to travel to the Panama Canal, where they could tour the Canal at Gatun expansion. If not doing direct business through the Panama Canal, most attendees are very familiar with its ongoings and its current expansion. This was an Third Quarter 2012 • Cruising Magazine 19

opportunity for all to see and learn about its progress. The day then allowed for tours provided by Aventuras 2000, allowing for a chance to explore the jungle area that is now the Gatun Lake, cruising the channels and observing wildlife, or to sail to the Embera Indians community in the Chagres River, admiring their homes, dances and customs. In addition to entertaining and providing valuable first-hand experience to the cruise line executives, these tour offerings played a significant role for the members; they were a hands-on course for the numerous tour operators in attendance; these members could learn how to improve their offerings by reversing their role and experiencing things as a tourist, finding what they want to see and how they want to be treated. Furthermore, it allowed a chance to see how other operators manage crowd control and the flow of passengers; transportation from and to the cruise ship; how to interact with the passengers as soon as they leave the ship; and more facets of logistics and other areas. It also gave a chance for more potential business relationships by offering an opportunity to synergize products and offerings. 20 Cruising Magazine • Third Quarter 2012
June 26th started the morning off with the FCCA Foundation hosting a charity breakfast in the benefit of Fundacion Jesus Luz De Opotunidades. This outreach program works with impoverished young gang members in Panama City to help guide them to a better path, offering alternatives to a life of violence and despair. The FCCA Foundation was able to donate goods and supplies that will support a project to build a community soccer field and sustainable work projects, such as a laundromat and woodworking shop. After breakfast, the group joined Rafa Zevallos, executive director, on a trip to a revitalized gang headquarter that was formally stomping grounds for one of the most notoriously violent gangs in Panama City, where the attendees saw the work Mr. Zevallos’s organization has done to revitalize not only the physical area, but also the lives that otherwise would have been lost to gang activity. The executives and Platinum Members then shifted to the PAMAC Meeting. In this semi-annual meeting, the members gather around cruise executives and other participants with valuable knowledge, who
lead a panel to share and discuss the latest developments and issues in the industry—from the global and national level to individual concerns/questions/input of the members. Any topic is open to conversation by the members, panel and executives in order to ensure that everyone in attendance is informed of all the latest happenings and how to best actualize the knowledge gained. “I am honored to be a vice chairman at the PAMAC Meeting,” told Matthew Sams, vice president of Caribbean relations, Holland America Line. “This is an important feature for relaying all of the latest information to the members while also giving a chance to know how to best learn from it and implement what they need to fully take advantage of this knowledge—from an individual operational level to steps they must take to improve their regions.” One-on-one meetings followed the PAMAC Meeting. This gave the members a chance to meet with the cruise executives of their choosing, those who best applied to the members’ product or destination. This provided the opportunity to promote and pitch their products to those that make the decisions of what is

offered onboard cruise ships and which ports will be included for current and future itinerary development. Additionally, this supplied the most focus for the executives to offer insights on how to improve their product, along with any changes or input to make a more viable business model considering the operational information from the cruise lines’ perspective. The executives truly know how to tailor a product or destination to best maximize the cruise industry’s economic impact, and this is knowledge they are more than willing to impart. Federico Gonzalez-Denton, director, government and community relations for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. knows the importance of these meetings: “The one-on-one meetings allow for us to address the specific concerns or learn about new products from Platinum Members. This is an important tool for both the members and us. For us, we fre-
quently learn about new developments and products, and we are able to help fine-tune them to best fit the cruise lines. For the members, it gives them a real vantage point in knowing what the lines are looking for and how to appeal to them.” That night, Panama hosted a farewell fiesta at Havana Panama to ensure that the members had the opportunity to talk with whomever they needed and left no ends untied, along with a great ending. The fiesta served exactly this purpose, providing good times and memories, but also allowing for the completion of any ongoing conversations (or perhaps the start of new ones). The networking at these events truly is unparalleled because of the relationships forged between the members and executives, and this is one of the greatest resources to offer. Indeed, it is crucial in this industry to be able to establish the right relation-
ships and gain the necessary knowledge of how to appeal, promote and develop products and destinations to the right entities. This is one of the FCCA’s main functions and why it offers events like these that gather some of the most significant decision makers and prominent professionals in the industry to establish and foster relationships, develop and promote their products and destinations, cultivate ideas and learn from the latest trends and information. And Panama certainly made this possible through all the hard work and generous provisions, along with its beautiful land, wealth of offerings and much more. Because of this, Panama has become a tourism hotspot, but it is still actively moving forward and progressing its product and infrastructure. This event offered just a few of these developments, but it did show how Panama goes above and beyond to take care of its guests and partners. Third Quarter 2012 • Cruising Magazine 21

F CCA Delegat ion Meet s wit h Mexican Gover nor s of CONAGO
J
une 11th-13th, 2012 marked a momentous occasion for the cruise industry and states of Mexico. For the first time, an outside entity met with CONAGO, the organization of governors from various Mexican states (Baja California, Baja California Sur, Campeche, Chiapas, Colima, Guerrero, Jalisco, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tabasco, Veracruz and Yucatán). A delegation of cruise executives from FCCA Member Lines traveled to Mazatlan in order to discuss the individual issues of the states and develop closer working relationships. “It was both a huge honor and opportunity to be brought into this forum and meet with the governors,” said Michele Paige, president of the FCCA. “The stage was set to meet and work with the various states and develop one-on-one relationships while addressing their specific issues.”
The meeting was prompted by Governor Roberto Borge Angulo of Quintana Roo, who has developed close ties with the cruise industry and a vision for the industry throughout Mexico. As part of this vision and in his position as chairman of the CONAGO, he wants his fellow governors to share in the successes he has seen because of his partnership. “[Governor Borge] understands the value of the cruise industry,” told Paige. “And while he has worked very well with us, he felt the other states and governors would be in a better position if they had the opportunity to hear from us, to get closer to us.”
This was accomplished by CONAGO giving the delegation a forum to understand the cruise industry generically, but there was also time to sit down individually for one-on-one meetings to answer any questions, address particular concerns and listen to the visions for their states, ports, infrastructure, etc. In fact, a good representation of the Mexican shareholders was in attendance, with SECTUR (secretary of tourism), SCT (communications and transportation) and FONATUR (Mexico’s national trust fund for tourism development) sending representatives. Though their participation was important, the focus was the relationship building with the governors of CONAGO, and as Ms. Paige told, this was as vital as it was successful: “While we have ships going to most of the states that we met with, to be able to maximize the opportunities, we must have a relationship with the head of that state.” As she explains, Mexico’s expansive territory and 31 separate states make these individual relationships especially necessary. Fortunately, this goal was realized. The discussions led to many things that are already being enacted, and the relationships are closer. Yet all entities know that this is not the finish line, and there is no room for complacency. This is why an invitation has already been issued for a subsequent meeting between the cruise industry and CONAGO.

Curaçao: T he Ult imat e E xper ience Curaçao is redefining the Caribbean cruise getaway with its intimate, secluded beaches, pristine dive sites, eclectic array of restaurants and classy resorts. The capital city of Willemstad, a UNESCO World Heritage site, lures visitors with its distinctive pastel-colored Dutch Colonial architecture, museums and monuments. Located in the southern Caribbean, with more than 30 beaches, 129 nationalities, 60 dive sites and an increasing number of hospitality and entertainment developments, Curaçao has truly blossomed. World of Diversity Curçao’s inhabitants are a friendly mix of European, African and Indian bloodlines. Although the Spanish were the first Europeans to establish on the island, the Dutch have marked their presence over the centuries. For 400 years, Curaçao has been one of the busiest ports in the Caribbean. The diversity of Curaçao is rooted in all experiences you encounter on the island. From the local Creole language—Papiamentu—to local culinary delights, like goat stew and iguana soup, and from the folkloric musical genres and dance forms, like “tambú”,
to traditional housing, such as the “kas di palu di maishi” (Sorghum stalk house) in the countryside. Everything is present and available on “dushi Korsou” (‘sweet/lovely Curaçao’). Most inhabitants speak four languages—English, Spanish, Dutch and Papiamentu. A great variety of international cuisine tickles the taste buds, from fast-food chains to five-star restaurants that feature the best of Curaçao’s diverse gastronomy. Entertainment is also key, and Curaçao knows how to put on a show, hosting huge concert events like the annual Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival, with performers such as Stevie Wonder, Santana, Alicia Keys, Maná, Sting, Simply Red, Ruben Blades, John Legend and others. The nightlife is just as lively and exemplifies Curaçao’s diversity and rich culture, with groovy clubs and bars with all the modern delights or Latin and Caribbean beats, rhythms and atmospheres. Curaçao’s diversity and culture mixed with its modern progression can be Third Quarter 2012 • Cruising Magazine 25

seen simply by taking a stroll, as contemporary buildings share the limelight with Art Deco structures and traditional Dutch architecture. Curaçao has and shares it all. Picturesque Willemstad The Capital Willemstad was built around the main harbor. The St. Anna Bay is a canal that connects the Caribbean Sea with the Schottegat Bay, but separates the city into two areas: Otrabanda and Punda. The one-of-a-kind Queen Emma Bridge, nicknamed “the swinging old lady”, is a floating pontoon bridge that unites the two city areas for pedestrians. When the bridge opens for maritime traffic, ferries immediately take over and continue to shuttling the public over the canal until the bridge is closed again. Punda’s trademark view is the “Handelskade” (‘trade wharf’), the “little Amsterdam” of traditional Dutch buildings facing the canal. Its counterpart on the other side is literally called “Otrobanda” (‘the other side’). Both sides are a favorite of strollers and shoppers. The best tourist shopping is in the narrow streets and alleys of Punda, in an area bounded by the Floating Market, 26 Cruising Magazine • Third Quarter 2012
Plaza, Columbusstraat, and Breedestraat (Broadway). Willemstad is a living museum of colonial architecture, forts, monuments and squares, filled with shops, cafés, terraces and restaurants. When cruise ships are docked, the streets of Punda and Otrobanda come alive with colorful vendors and festive flea markets. However, any day is a good one for snapping up some of the Caribbean’s most meaningful finds: local art work, pottery, Dutch Delftware, wooden shoes, Curaçao liqueur, brilliantly painted hanging planters made from old tires and worlds of trade goods from South America, which lies only 44 miles to the south. The famous Floating Market sells mostly produce and fish for local consumption, but for tourists, it’s a good place to find spices and inexpensive terracotta planters. Sightseeing The waist of the island, from the airport to Willemstad, is covered with neat suburbs and modern shopping centers. The best sightseeing is in a loop to Westpunt (west point) and back to the city. On the southwest side, you can find the most beautiful secluded beaches and
rural areas, from dry forests to hilly landscape. The west side of the island is rural, again highlighting Curaçao’s diversity. Winds are brisk and dry, providing a greater comfort factor at high temperatures than is found in the more humid islands. Fortunately, hurricanes rarely affect this part of the Caribbean, as the island lies below the hurricane belt. Highlights Curaçao is proud of its heritage and exposes its history through the many themed museums, such as the African and slavery museum, Kurá Hulanda, the Mikve Israel-Emanuel Synagogue and Jewish museum that chronicles the history of Curaçao congregation, the artfully designed Maritime Museum or the Curaçaosch Museum. Other museums, like the Octagon Museum, Tula Museum, Numismatic Museum, etc. specialize their collections on historic figures, lifestyles and antique modes, never repeating themselves and therefore earning their right of existence and contributing to the influences that shaped Curaçao and its people. The natural side of the island comes to life in other attractions, such as the sophisticated Curacao Sea Aquarium, where visitors can get up and close with
3rd qtr-2012 v4_Quarterly Magazine 9/15/12 9:09 PM Page 27
sea lions, sharks, turtles, stingrays and toothy moray eels. The Dolphin Academy provides the opportunity to swim with dolphins, while Substation Curaçao offers the Curasub, a mini-submarine that takes guests beneath the sea, down to 1,000 feet. The Ostrich Farm raises not only ostriches, but also sheep. There is also an exquisite restaurant. On the other side of the living spectrum, the Aloe Vera Plantation cultivates and makes natural products from lotions to juices, available to sample and purchase with the interesting knowledge of their origin. The Hato Caves are gaping caverns, cool and mysterious with their natural formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The Christoffel National Park covers a 4,500-acre reserve topped by Mount Christoffel, the island’s highest peak, and offers a closer look at the skittering flora and fauna of the dry forest. At Boka Tabla, you can experience the spectacular explosion of rough ocean smashing against eroding rock—a beautiful sight. The plantation houses of Curaçao,
known as “landhuizen”, are an architectural scrapbook of the 18th and 19th centuries. Some are open to the public as restaurants or inns and can be seen only from the road. Landhuis Chobolobo is famous as the site of the Curaçao Liqueur Distillery, where the renowned Blue Curaçao is bottled. Other plantation houses are Landhuis Savonet, Acension, Knip or Jan Kok, just to name a few, and are located on the west side on the island. Sun, Sea and Sand Curaçao’s beaches range from cozy coves to long strands of white sand, all of them washed by waves of clear, turquoise water on the sheltered southwest coast. But beware of the north coast, where undertows and surges are powerful. The island lists almost 70 dive sites, from walls to wrecks, reefs to rocks. Among the unique dives are the Valley, Lost Anchor, “Alice in Wonderland” and the depths surrounding an offshore desert island, Klein Curaçao, with its pristine reefs and coral Mushroom Forest. All dives are in protected parks, where anchoring is not allowed. Waters are usually calm and always warmly pleasant. Curaçao Cuisine Local food is called
“Kriyoyo”
(‘Creole’) and boasts a blend of flavors and techniques best compared to Caribbean and Latin American cuisine. Popular dishes include: stobá, a stew made with various ingredients such as papaya, beef or goat; guiambo, soup made from okra and seafood; “kadushi”, cactus soup; “sopi mondongo”, intestine soup; “funchi”, cornmeal, and a lot of fish and other seafood. The ubiquitous snack is “pastechi”, a fried pastry with fillings of cheese, tuna, ham, or ground meat. Around the holiday season, special dishes are consumed, such as the “ayaka”, a cornmeal pastry wrapped in banana leaf, and “pekelé”, made out of salt cod. At weddings and other special occasions, a variety of sweets are served: “kokada”, a sweet, coconut-based; “ko’i lechi”, made of condensed milk and sugar; “tentalaria”, peanut sweets; and “bolo pretu” (‘black cake’), a tart drowned in liqueur. The Ultimate Experience Curacao has everything to offer and more, and therefore is difficult to classify as a typical destination. It has no roller coasters or huge attraction parks, but it has all the ingredients of an exotic getaway for the whole family. Curaçao is an ultimate experience. Carnival’s New Ship, R efurbs F ocused on t he Car ibbean

arnival Cruise Lines has embarked on a $500 million Fun Ship 2.0 program that is dramatically transforming the shipboard vacation experience on its existing ships. In addition, many of the elements of Fun Ship 2.0 were incorporated into Carnival Breeze, the line’s new 3,690-guest ship, introduced in Europe in June. Carnival Breeze is homeporting in Miami starting in late November and will sail innovative six- and eight-day portintensive Caribbean itineraries. In addition, as Carnival’s ships re-enter service from dry dock with the enhanced shipboard programs and features, all are being deployed on Caribbean itineraries either seasonally or year-round. “Carnival Cruise Lines has always had a Caribbean-based product, with more ships calling at more Caribbean ports than any other cruise line,” said Gerry Cahill, president and CEO. “Now, if guests want to experience the newest features on our ships, they will be able to do it on a variety of Caribbean itineraries either on the new Carnival Breeze or a variety of existing vessels receiving Fun Ship 2.0 elements.” Three ships will get some elements of Fun Ship 2.0 in twoweek dry docks before the year is out. In September Port Canaveral–based Carnival Dream will be upgraded, followed by Carnival Conquest which is based in New Orleans, and in November Carnival Glory, which sails from Miami seasonally, gets the upgrades. In 2013, Carnival Destiny is undergoing an unprecedented multimillion-dollar makeover and will emerge from a 49-day dry dock as Carnival Sunshine, sailing to the Caribbean from New Orleans following a season in Europe.
New Fun Stuff For the Fun Ship 2.0 initiative, Carnival entered into partnerships with entertainer George Lopez, Food Network star Guy Fieri, leading video game manufacturer EA SPORTS and game-maker Hasbro. The company also worked with leading production talent to create a series of high-energy musical performances, and recruited celebrity song master DJ IRIE. New bars and eating places include unique branded spaces as well. Through its partnership with comedian and TV personality George Lopez, Carnival will bring even more laughs to The Punchliner Comedy Club Presented by George Lopez. As Carnival’s “curator of comedy,” Lopez will consult on hiring comedic talent and advise on ways to enhance the comedy club experience. At Guy’s Burger Joint, Carnival and successful restaurateur, cookbook author and television star Guy Fieri have come together to cook up the best burgers at sea. Open for a complimentary lunch, afternoon snack or dinner, the laid-back poolside dining venue looks like a roadside burger joint on a coastal California highway. Hasbro, The Game Show consists of larger-than-life productions and entertainment activities based on the popular “Family Game Night” television show that puts guests right in the middle of six favorite Hasbro games. Carnival partnered with leading sports videogame brand EA SPORTS on an exciting new sports bar concept where guests can play their favorite EA SPORTS videogames, watch live sports on a massive video wall and keep up with real-time sports scores 24/7 live on the ticker. Several new themed bars also have been added.
Carnival Liberty was the first ship in the fleet to receive the Fun Ship 2.0 upgrades in October 2011.

with a poolside version of the popular Caribbean themed RedFrog Pub. It specializes in Caribbean rum-based frozen drinks and beers, including ThirstyFrog Red, Carnival’s private-label draft brew. Just across the deck is BlueIguana Tequila Bar, a laid-back Mexican-themed spot specializing in tequila-based frozen drinks and Mexican beers. Alchemy Bar is Carnival’s vintage-themed cocktail “pharmacy” for guests seeking a unique experience with interesting drink flavors and ingredients. Carnival’s expert mixologists “prescribe” concoctions from different fun categories or guests can also try their hand at creating their own custom cocktails. The Library Bar is an intimate cocktail lounge featuring bar service and automatic wine dispensers in a relaxed, quiet venue. Best of the Caribbean Carnival has always been a leader in Caribbean cruises, and with Carnival Breeze, the line is introducing an innovative Miami-based cruise schedule. Carnival Breeze offers a yearround three-port, six-day cruise program operating SundaysSaturdays beginning Dec. 2, 2012. That schedule is offered on alternating weeks and features visits to three popular ports of call: Grand Turk, Ocho Rios and Nassau. Although uniquely different, each destination features beautiful white-sand beaches, excellent shopping, dining and
sightseeing experiences, and a wide variety of water sports, along with a laid-back island ambiance that embodies the essence of a Caribbean cruise. In addition to the six-day cruises, Carnival Breeze offers two distinctly different four-port, eight-day itineraries year-round from Miami operating Saturday-Sunday beginning Nov. 24, 2012. The Saturday-to-Sunday rotation is particularly attractive, as it maximizes consumers’ vacation time, with eight full days of cruising across two weekends. Each of Carnival Breeze’s eight-day cruises from Miami provides guests ample opportunities to sample the best the Caribbean has to offer, from sunning and relaxing on gorgeous beaches to shopping for duty-free bargains and savoring delectable island cuisine. The schedule includes an eight-day southern Caribbean itinerary featuring Grand Turk, La Romana (Dominican Republic), Curaçao and Aruba, or an eight-day eastern Caribbean route visiting St. Thomas/St. John, Antigua, Tortola and Nassau. Combined with its six-day cruises, Carnival Breeze guests are offered unprecedented opportunities to visit a diversity of sunny, tropical Caribbean destinations, with nearly a dozen ports of call featured among the various itineraries.

MSC Divina Expands the Fantasia Class with Style and Luxury
T
he 139,500-ton, 3,502-passenger, feature- and technology-rich MSC Divina entered service in May 2012 and currently sails the Mediterranean. Joining sisters MSC Fantasia and MSC Splendida, MSC Divina further enhances the Fantasia class while carrying on its traditions, offering many of the familiar features and presenting entirely new ones. MSC Divina builds onto the family name while branding an identity all her own. She was created with De Jorio Design International to take the acclaimed standards of MSC Cruises’ Fantasia class to a new level. Inspired by Italian icon and diva Sophia Loren, MSC Divina brings reminders of the elegance and glamor of the golden age of sea travel in a stateof-the-art vision. Spacious, ultramodern with a focus of sumptuous comfort, personalized service and an immense variety of leisure and sports facilities, plus world-class entertainment and decadent dining, MSC Divina encapsulates the mission statement of the Fantasia class but opens it up to definitions not previously considered. One of the most notable first differences is the 100 additional staterooms. Over 80% of the ship’s staterooms feature sensational ocean views, most with private balconies. Another new feature is the Galaxy panoramic restaurant, which provides a brunch menu for late risers and Mediterranean fusion cuisine for dinner, perfect fare for MSC Divina’s sailings. In fact, MSC Divina has something for every taste bud, ranging from tapas and wine at La Cantina di Bacco to tacos, steaks, enchiladas and burgers at Sacramento Tex Mex & Burger Restaurant, snacks at the sports bar or gelato in Piazza del Doge. Of course, there is also the private Le Muse restaurant in MSC Yacht Club. MSC Yacht Club, a feature on the Fantasia-class ships, is a
private ship-within-a-ship haven of luxury suites, offering exceptional service, complete with butler service, concierge reception, exclusive shopping and more. A selection of wines, spirits and mineral waters is complimentary within MSC Yacht Club. In addition to the dedicated Le Muse restaurant, there are also other exclusive MSC Yacht Club venues featuring dining delicacies and social settings, such as Top Sail Lounge or The One Bar. There is even The One Pool Deck exclusively available to MSC Yacht Club guests, providing a private swimming pool, two whirlpool baths and sun deck. All guests onboard MSC Divina can also enjoy an infinity pool (just one of the four pools on board), an aqua park complete with fountains and jets, the MSC Aurea Spa (featuring Balinese-inspired treatments), and kids and teen clubs. For those looking to stay in shape, there is an exercise center overlooking the water and even a squash court. Other past Fantasia-class favorites are also back, such as the F-1 simulator and 4D cinema. While not partaking in these offerings, a stroll onboard will quickly lead to a number of venues for shopping as well as several bars and lounges. Here is where the entertainment really lights up in the evening, especially in the state-of-theart 1,600-seat Pantheon Theater, futuristic disco and Casino Veneziano, with more than 10,947 square feet of casino gaming, and Virtual World, a video game room. MSC Divina lives up to her name. Every member of the family can experience MSC Cruises’ Mediterranean heritage, especially with the line’s “Kids 11 and Younger Sail Free” offer. MSC Divina will be bringing her state-of-the-art cruise experience to PortMiami in fall 2013 to sail a series of Caribbean itineraries, taking the place of MSC Poesia, which is sailing the Caribbean this season. to get away. But maybe it will take the enhanced Movies Under the Stars screen to catch your eye.
This evolution is a representation of Princess’ push forward, marking a significant increase of capacity. The progression can also be seen in the innovative features onboard, such as the SeaWalk, an enclosed glass walkway that extends 28 feet beyond the edge of the ship, 128 feet over the water. On the opposite, port side is the cantilevered SeaView Bar, with glass floors and sweeping ocean views.
There are plenty of other dining options available, as well, from private arrangements to fresh specialty restaurants and casual options. The aft traditional dining room offers fixed-time meals, along with The Chef’s Table Lumiere, and anytime dining is available in the two forward dining rooms. For specialty fare, there is Italian cuisine and premium seafood at Sabatini’s and premium aged beef and fresh seafood at Crown Grill. Plenty of casual choices complete the selection, such as the Horizon Court buffet, The Pastry Shop, Alfredo’s Pizzeria, International Café and wine, sushi and tapas at Vines.
Or perhaps a better sign of this is Princess’ largest-ever top-deck pool, offering another Princess first: a dazzling evening water and light show. And the upper-deck pool exclusively for adults, complete with plush cabanas, shows how the line is staying with the trends and offers a great place 38 Cruising Magazine • Third Quarter 2012
An even larger and expanded atrium will also signify Princess’ growth and forward movement. Here, there are new casual dining options, including Gelato or the Ocean Terrace Seafood Bar, and live entertainment in the adjoining bars and lounges, such as pianists dueling on glass pianos at Crooner’s.
A perfect thing after meals and a very important component to Princess, entertainment is a venue where
Royal Princess will also feature an array of exciting entertainment options, like late night comedy events, cabaret features and signature Princess Cruises theme nights, from a cozy seat in one of the bars and lounges, which abound. Vista Lounge gives a show lounge setting; Bellini’s is a new Italian-inspired cocktail bar cantilevered over the Piazza on deck six; Crooner’s Lounge and Bar’s menu entices with 75 martinis; and the Wheelhouse Bar features live entertainment and a club-like ambiance. Royal Princess also has plenty of ways to get active in the state-of-the-art fitness center and Center Court, boasting a batting cage, putting green, indoor golf driving range and even a laser shooting range! There will also be a private aerobics studio, bocce ball and croquet area, outdoor jogging track, outdoor exercise court, table tennis and basketball, volleyball and tennis courts. And Lotus Spa will be the perfect way to unwind after all those activities, though any excuse will do to immerse in relaxation and experience The Enclave, the new, exclusive area in Lotus Spa. Indeed, Royal Princess, along with her upcoming sister, truly marks a huge growth for the line and debuts a number of firsts. What her highness shows is that Princess truly has plenty new to offer, so we have a lot to look forward to while watching the evolution take place.

Puerto Rico’s Destination Product: A New Paradigm By: Jaime A. López-Díaz, Chief Development Officer, Puerto Rico Department of Economic Development and Commerce
Puerto Rico as a cruise destination Puerto Rico, a destination like no other. Few places on Earth can boast of having the combination of natural beauty and urban attractions that Puerto Rico has. Puerto Rico is home to some of the world’s most impressive natural and manmade wonders. For a small island (it’s about 100 miles long and 35 miles wide, or roughly the size of Connecticut), it offers far more than beaches … although it has over 300 of them! This diversity makes Puerto Rico an ideal cruise destination and the challenge we faced every day is how to smoothly get cruise visitors interested in experiencing our destination and fulfilling their expectations in a more than satisfactory way. Cruise tourism provides Puerto Rico a singular opportunity to showcase the destination to over 1,000,000 potential cruise visitors. Our cruise industry significantly contributes to our economy, generating close to five thousand jobs and having an impact of more than $240 million, yearly, on the island’s 40 Cruising Magazine • Third Quarter 2012
economy. San Juan is currently served by 14 cruise lines and is home port to six of them. While Puerto Rico’s cruise ship business has matured over time, there is still much room for growth. Puerto Rico strategies to improve destination product Puerto Rico, as well as the Caribbean region, faces an important challenge every day: how to remain an attractive destination as ports worldwide continue to develop and reinvent themselves. The strategic initiatives that Puerto Rico has adopted to develop both transit and homeport segments stem from this challenge. Among these are: improving air access for our homeport passengers, improve the cruise passenger experience, enhance our product offering, establish strategic alliances, and improve our infrastructure. Air access is certainly key to increasing our homeport capacity. We have improved air access to the island, which has
3rd qtr-2012 v4_Quarterly Magazine 9/15/12 9:10 PM Page 41
resulted in additional frequencies and new routes from cruise feeder markets. For example, flights from Tampa doubled as Air Tran and Jet Blue began flying with two daily flights each. Also, Air Tran has added two daily frequencies from Baltimore, and Jet Blue began new daily service from Jacksonville, Hartford, West Palm Beach, and Washington DC National Reagan airport. Delta has increased daily services from both Atlanta and New York and US Airways from Philadelphia. Finally, in the last 18 months, three new international airlines began year round services to San Juan including British Airways from London, Condor Airlines from Frankfurt, and WestJet from Toronto. Puerto Rico’s main international airport in San Juan now has a year-round average of 78 daily flights to 22 US destinations, international direct services to Toronto, London, Frankfurt, Panama, Caracas, and Madrid, and 82 daily departing flights to 21 Caribbean destinations. A well-diversified base of airlines serves these routes, including: Air Canada, Air Sunshine, Air Tran, American Airlines, American Eagle, British Airways, Cape Air, Continental, Copa, Condor, Delta, Iberia, Insel, jetBlue, LIAT, Spirit Airlines, Sunwing, United, US Airways and Virgin Atlantic. Another key strategic initiative is to improve the passenger experience upon arrival and throughout their stay in Puerto Rico. In order to achieve this, we have implemented a project to organize the tourism transportation logistics at the San Juan port area in order to assure our visitors a better arrival experience. This project involved the creation of staging areas across the piers that serve as waiting areas for tourism transportation vehicles that pick and drop off passengers in the piers. The initiative has resulted in more organized logistics for tourism transportation. Also, the waterfront area of Old San Juan was revamped and the first phase will be inaugurating before the high season. This project enhanced the sidewalks and infrastructure of the main road to the piers. In product enhancement, we have broadened the available excursions for passengers, thanks to the introduction of new attractions, such as the Toro Verde and Toro Verde Jr. ecological adventure, where visitors glide through a rainforest
canopy on a lengthy cable system, providing them with a real bird’s-eye view of the treetops and their ecology and attractions created in the waterfront area. Part of the renovations of the waterfront include the establishment of the New York Trapeze School, moorings for Tall Ships, a restaurant and bar, an amphitheater for outdoor concerts and music festivals, an artisans market, a water tour operator, and seaplane tour operator. All of these attractions have created unique offers for the cruise passengers like a cooking tour, water excursions to nearby snorkeling areas, tours of the bay in the historic Tall Ships, trapeze classes, and an artisans market, among others. These new attractions only add to the experience of visiting El Yunque Rainforest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. Forest Service system, the Bacardi Rum Factory, and the New and Old San Juan, among many others. In order to financially attract cruise business to Puerto Rico, we have developed what has become the standard incentives model for the cruise ship industry in the Caribbean. The incentives law establishes a fund to promote the island’s cruise ship industry through coop marketing programs with the cruise lines, providing cruise lines with incentives for provisioning locally, a frequent visit of homeport incentive and a transit incentive, among others. These incentives are from a joint fund that operates with $5 million from the Puerto Rico Tourism Company and another $4 million from the central government’s General Fund. A key factor to make these initiatives successful is to communicate them to the cruise industry. Governor’s Luis Fortuño’s administration has partnered with the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association to portray the message to the cruise executives that Puerto Rico is open for business, looking to increase and improve the cruise industry of the island for the benefit of Puerto Rico and for the entire Caribbean region. We are very proud to have hosted the 2011 FloridaCaribbean Cruise Association Conference and Trade Show. It was certainly a unique opportunity to showcase Puerto Rico’s new paradigm in cruise development and destination experience, and validate, with actions, to all participants, that Puerto Rico Does It Better!

artagena has been dubbed by many as an “outdoor museum” because of its balconies, cobblestone streets, bastions, imposing walls, squares, and horse-drawn carriages, which is why it was recognized as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 1984. This cultural jewel and meeting venue nestled in the Colombian Caribbean shoreline has made Cartagena a renowned and distinguished host to many international events, including countless literary and journalistic events, positioning it as a place of legend and sublime beauty. The “Heroic City”, as this town is also known, is the perfect setting for the 20th FCCA Conference & Trade Show that will be held from September 30 to October 4, 2013. The most influential cruise industry personalities will meet 42 Cruising Magazine • Third Quarter 2012
to exchange valuable business affairs to generate new commercial opportunities in the region and Colombia. “For Colombia to have achieved being the host of this important meeting, where relevant industry issues will be discussed and create opportunities for socio-economic growth for the Greater Caribbean, it is a testament of the country’s commitment to the industry and an opportunity to demonstrate the result of endured team work where public and private sector have joined forces to position Colombia as a competitive destination for tourism and business, said Maria Claudia Lacouture, president of Proexport Colombia, in charge of promoting international tourism, foreign investment and non-traditional exports in Colombia, leading the country’s participation in the cruise industry.
The Port of Cartagena is no stranger to international tourism. In 2006 it received 42,024 visitors and 38 landfalls. It began operations in 2008 as an intermediate port of embarkation for cruise ships such as Royal Caribbean International. In 2011 Pullmantur followed, giving way to an increase in port arrivals with 308,082 passengers and 202 landfalls. The 2012-2013 season looks promising with major cruise ships returning, like Disney Cruise Lines and new ones arriving for the first time, like the Phoenix-Reisen, Paul Gaugin and Kristina Cruises. A Perfect Stage for Major Events You may wonder how a 500-year-old city has been able to transform itself into a fusion of historic, luxury destination, and host of world-class events.
3rd qtr-2012 v4_Quarterly Magazine 9/15/12 9:10 PM Page 43
This has been achieved by the deliberate strategic vision to invest in its infrastructure, connectivity and focus in its cruising experience–onboard and onshore–to maintain and amplify its reputation of topnotch servicing. Just as an example, in 2011 the city hosted 36 international congresses that positioned Cartagena at number 13 among preferred Latin American cities to organize events in the ICCA ranking highlighting the Sixth Summit of the Americas (which brought together 34 heads of state and their delegations, including U.S. President Barack Obama), XVI General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (which brought a thousand participants), and the V World Economic Forum for Latin America (assisted 600 leaders and entrepreneurs in the world), among others events also based in Cartagena de
Indias each year to decorate the ‘Little Stone Corral’: International Film Festival, The Hay Festival or The International Music Festival. So what is so attractive about Cartagena that international heads of state, corporations, and business travelers admire? Well, not only having the infrastructure in a single city with three convention centers, but also possessing unconventional locations such as the Teatro Heredia, the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, bastions, museums, plazas, and galleons making events a unique experience by becoming the backdrop of a unique theatrical set experience. This historical experience has attracted the presence of international hotel brands such as the Hilton, Sofitel Accor, Marriott, Holiday Inn,
Intercontinental, Sheraton and more than 35 boutique hotels that used to be sixteenth century mansions expanding the room capacity of four and five star hotels. Soon, the new Jet Blue Airlines route from New York to Cartagena de Indias will dramatically complement the existing tourism international connectivity strategy. Come to the 20th Annual FCCA Conference & Trade Show and discover the features that make Cartagena the cruise destination with a fascinating blend of past and a present, offering a unique experience in a single location with colonial, republican, and contemporary architecture; an exciting nightlife; important cultural festivals; lush landscapes, magnificent beaches; and tourism and hotel infrastructure catering to all sorts of visitors and events. Colombia awaits! Third Quarter 2012 • Cruising Magazine 43

St . Croix – Your Gat eway t o P aradise
T
here is truly something special about St. Croix. The stunning island has a distinct heritage that sets it apart from other Caribbean islands yet it still flies under the radar to many travelers. The largest of the three U.S. Virgin Islands, it is rich with the history and the cultural influences of the seven flags that have flown over the Territory – evident in the architecture of brightly-colored buildings, national parks, landmarks and fortifications, botanical attractions, food, music and customs that are an integral part of the island lifestyle. St. Croix embodies everything a cruise passenger could want in a tropical destination: beauty, warmth, culture, cuisine and history, and upon disembarking, you’ll find all this and more… Welcome to St. Croix St. Croix boasts two charming ports and even more enchanting towns and attractions for cruise passengers and their loved ones to explore. From October 2012 through September 2013,
the Ann E. Abramson Marine Facility at the Frederiksted pier and Gallows Bay Dock, located only a mile from Christiansted ports will welcome passengers from 55 cruise ships (nine of which will make their inaugural calls to the island) to experience all that St. Croix has to offer. Royal Caribbean’s Jewel of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas, Vision of the Seas and Enchantment of the Seas, and Celebrity Cruise Line’s Eclipse are scheduled to visit St. Croix; while smaller cruise ships Amadea, Columbus, Silver Spirit and Silver Whisper will visit St. Croix for the first time. Colorful Christiansted The port at Christiansted provides a wonderful view of Fort Christiansvaern, an imposing structure with pale yellow walls erected between 1738 and 1749 that still dominates the city’s harbor today. Christiansted is a very walkable town, and the Gallows Bay Dock, located only a mile from Christiansted enables small-
ship cruise passengers to explore at their leisure – whether it’s admiring the historical churches, pastel buildings and unique art galleries. Shoppers in downtown Christiansted can navigate its colorful streets in search of the perfect custom-designed Crucian Hook Bracelet – a 45-year-old symbol of true love or the wearer’s search for it, depending on the direction the hook faces. Other adventures include a day-sail to Buck Island National Monument for a guided snorkeling tour through 19,000 acres of pristine, preserved water or heading east of Christiansted to give two of the fastest-growing water sports a try – Kite Boarding or Stand-Up Paddle boarding. On the north shore, kayaking through the lush tropical ecosystem of the Salt River Bay National Historical Park is a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors, as is a trip to Cane Bay to experience the largest living reef in the Caribbean where five shipwrecks lie within 100 yards of each other. For a more casual experience it is always suggested to take a scenic drive Third Quarter 2012 • Cruising Magazine 47

to Point Udall, the easternmost point of the United States, for breathtaking ocean vista views. Historical Frederiksted Frederiksted is the main port for cruise ships visiting the island. Upon nearing the shore, one gets a sea-farer’s view of Fort Frederik, built in 1760 to ward off invading pirates. After disembarking, you can take a tour of this historic fort to learn about the island’s Danish past, or simply stroll along the waterfront and enjoy the breathtaking beaches nearby. History buffs won’t want to miss nearby Estate Whim Plantation Museum, a restored 18th-Century sugar estate dating from the 1700s, offering guests a glimpse of Denmark’s colonial impact on the island through tours of the furnished great house and the surrounding sugar factory ruins. A short drive out of town through the island’s rainforest leads travelers to the Ridge 2 Reef Farm, home of the Virgin Islands Sustainable Farm Institute, where day-long workshops and volunteer programs suit eco-conscious travelers interested in learning about sustainable methods of living and farming. Something New St. Croix is already home to Cruzan Rum, but a must-see attraction in the island is the new Captain Morgan Rum distillery’s welcome center. The visitor center allows guests to experience the rum’s unique history, production process and learn about the Captain himself. It will also house “The Captain’s Collection,” a stunning gathering of old and new Caribbean rums. 48 Cruising Magazine • Third Quarter 2012

THE PORT YOU CRUISE FROM SHOULD BE JUST AS ENTICING AS THE PORT YOU CRUISE TO.
Cruises should start the minute a passenger sets foot onboard. And, at PortMiami, they do. Just beyond the railing are the dramatic Miami skyline, our sparkling waters and tropical bay islands, and the glittering lights of South Beach. Which is why a record 4 million passengers traveled with us last year. Cruising from Miami adds yet another enticing port to your itinerary. For more information, visit www.miamidade.gov/portofmiami

Faces In The Industry KEMUEL ABRAHAM – Stateroom Attendant, Royal Caribbean International Saludos, I am Kemuel Abraham from Bluefields, Nicaragua proudly serving you onboard the beautiful Voyager of the Seas. Royal Caribbean International is a place where everyone is given an equal chance to prove yourself and realize your dream. When I was kid I always had a desire to do something other than stay home and work. I often mentioned to my Mother that I wanted to explore the world and, she always supported the idea. Bluefields, Nicaragua
I did not even know that my dream will lead to one of the finest companies in the world, Royal Caribbean International. When I saw the advertisement in one of the local newspapers “Latrensa,” I could not sleep the whole night and was dreaming about life onboard. I started my career with Royal Caribbean International as a Galley Utilty in 1999 and made my successful journey to Stateroom Attendant. That gives me pride and dignity within myself, and I feel different when I am dealing with international guests world wide and accomplishing their lifetime vacation experience with our great Voyager team.
