Message from the FCCA
Michele M. Paige
Kevin Sheehan
President, Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association
CEO, Norwegian Cruise Line / FCCA Chairman
“One man may hit the mark, another blunder; but heed not these distinctions. Only from the alliance of the one, working with and through the other, are great things born.” –Antoine de Saint-Exupery We are all familiar with the adage of strength in numbers. This especially holds true in business, where we constantly rely on partners for ideas, support, knowledge, contacts and more. Whether we want to expand or need a helping hand, a business partner is usually where we reach for support. Yet it is not the easiest task to find a knowledgeable and reliable partner, who knows the inside and out of the industry in which we work and who can help us accomplish our goals. The right resources and partners can be difficult to seek out. But this is one of the main reasons and functions of the FCCA: to help our members and partners in the private and public sectors develop cooperative and beneficial business relationships with our member cruise line executives and actualize our wealth of resources, information, experience and know-how. You will witness this focus over the next few days at our 19th annual Conference & Trade Show in the lovely Curacao. The balance between business sessions, social functions and the trade show, coupled with the attendance of almost a hundred cruise executives, representatives from destinations’ tourism ministries and over a thousand players from all facets of the industry, create the perfect forum for the exchange of information and industry trends, sharing of ideas and cultivation of valuable business relationships. Beyond providing all of that, the Conference also epitomizes what the FCCA Platinum and Associate Membership offer, as this is just one of many events with the same goals in mind, along with our yearround projects and publications to ease and promote communications between our partners and cruise line executives. So prepare yourselves to renew worthwhile business relationships or forge new ones while learning about the latest happenings in the industry. Be ready to maximize some of the multiple opportunities available at this event to help advance your company, product, or destination. But don’t forget to enjoy yourselves and this stunning country and to sample of sweet Curaçao’s offerings. Curaçao • October 1-5, 2012

Message from the Prime Minister
Dear participants to the FCCA Conference Bon Biní, as we say in our beautiful language Papiamentu. Welcome to Curaçao! On behalf of the people of Curaçao, I am delighted to extend to all delegates attending the 19th Annual Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association Conference a warm welcome to our beautiful and friendly island. We aim to make your stay unforgettable. It is a true privilege, and also an extraordinary opportunity, to serve as host to this year’s conference. We look forward to meet the many acquaintances, associates and industry partners in the energetic and vibrant tourism sector for the Caribbean region. Curaçao embraces the cruise industry and its partners, and will share its gracious hospitality with you during this year’s conference and tradeshow, which is a joint effort between public and private initiatives. We are proud to showcase Curaçao as an exciting destination that can be experienced year round. Diversity is our key element, in which we comfortably combine our rich history and modern facilities. Our people originate from varied backgrounds and can truly be referred to as multi-cultural and multi-lingual. Our diversity also stretches to our unique nature, with picturesque secluded beaches that adorn the island’s robust landscape. And of course diversity can be found in our music and cuisine, which are local, yet metropolitan and sophisticated. The ‘Southern Comfort’ refers to Curaçao, but with a determined vision for the future, in which the relationship with the cruise industry will be strengthened and jointly developed to continue sustainable growth for generations to come, with the guidance of the FCCA. I express the hope that each of you thoroughly enjoys your stay in our piece of paradise in the southern Caribbean, and we hope you decide to return real soon. Gerrit Schotte, Prime Minister of Curaçao

Curaçao: The Ultimate Experience Curaçao is redefining the Caribbean cruise getaway with its intimate, secluded beaches, pristine dive sites, eclectic array of restaurants and classy resorts. The capital city of Willemstad, a UNESCO World Heritage site, lures visitors with its distinctive pastel-colored Dutch Colonial architecture, museums and monuments. Located in the southern Caribbean, with more than 30 beaches, 129 nationalities, 60 dive sites and an increasing number of hospitality and entertainment developments, Curaçao has truly blossomed. World of Diversity Curaçao’s inhabitants are a friendly mix of European, African and Indian bloodlines. Although the Spanish were the first Europeans to establish on the island, the Dutch have marked their presence over the centuries. For 400 years, Curaçao has been one of the busiest ports in the Caribbean. 30
FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show
The diversity of Curaçao is rooted in all experiences you encounter on the island. From the local Creole language—Papiamentu—to local culinary delights, like goat stew and iguana soup, and from the folkloric musical genres and dance forms, like “tambú”, to traditional housing, such as the “kas di palu di maishi” (Sorghum stalk house) in the countryside. Everything is present and available on “dushi Korsou” (‘sweet/lovely Curaçao’). Most inhabitants speak four languages—English, Spanish, Dutch and Papiamentu. A great variety of international cuisine tickles the taste buds, from fast-food chains to five-star restaurants that feature the best of Curaçao’s diverse gastronomy. Entertainment is also key, and Curaçao knows how to put on a show, hosting huge concert events like the annual Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival, with performers such as Stevie Wonder,

Santana, Alicia Keys, Maná, Sting, Simply Red, Ruben Blades, John Legend and others. The nightlife is just as lively and exemplifies Curaçao’s diversity and rich culture, with groovy clubs and bars with all the modern delights or Latin and Caribbean beats, rhythms and atmospheres. Curaçao’s diversity and culture mixed with its modern progression can be seen simply by taking a stroll, as contemporary buildings share the limelight with Art Deco structures and traditional Dutch architecture. Curaçao has and shares it all. Picturesque Willemstad The Capital Willemstad was built around the main harbor. The St. Anna Bay is a canal that connects the Caribbean Sea with the Schottegat Bay, but separates the city into two areas: Otrabanda and Punda. The one-of-a-kind Queen Emma Bridge, nick-

named “the swinging old lady”, is a floating pontoon bridge that unites the two city areas for pedestrians. When the bridge opens for maritime traffic, ferries immediately take over and continue to shuttling the public over the canal until the bridge is closed again. Punda’s trademark view is the “Handelskade” (‘trade wharf’), the “little Amsterdam” of traditional Dutch buildings facing the canal. Its counterpart on the other side is literally called “Otrobanda” (‘the other side’). Both sides are a favorite of strollers and shoppers. The best tourist shopping is in the narrow streets and alleys of Punda, in an area bounded by the Floating Market, Plaza, Columbusstraat, and Breedestraat (Broadway). Willemstad is a living museum of colonial architecture, forts, monuments and squares, filled with shops, cafés, terraces and restaurants. When cruise ships are docked, the streets of Punda and Otrobanda come alive with colorful vendors

and festive flea markets. However, any day is a good one for snapping up some of the Caribbean’s most meaningful finds: local art work, pottery, Dutch Delftware, wooden shoes, Curaçao liqueur, brilliantly painted hanging planters made from old tires and worlds of trade goods from South America, which lies only 44 miles to the south.
the Mikve Israel-Emanuel Synagogue and Jewish museum that chronicles the history of Curaçao congregation, the artfully designed Maritime Museum or the Curaçaosch Museum.
The famous Floating Market sells mostly produce and fish for local consumption, but for tourists, it’s a good place to find spices and inexpensive terracotta planters.
Other museums, like the Octagon Museum, Tula Museum, Numismatic Museum, etc. specialize their collections on historic figures, lifestyles and antique modes, never repeating themselves and therefore earning their right of existence and contributing to the influences that shaped Curaçao and its people.
Sightseeing The waist of the island, from the airport to Willemstad, is covered with neat suburbs and modern shopping centers. The best sightseeing is in a loop to Westpunt (west point) and back to the city.
The natural side of the island comes to life in other attractions, such as the sophisticated Curacao Sea Aquarium, where visitors can get up and close with sea lions, sharks, turtles, stingrays and toothy moray eels.
On the southwest side, you can find the most beautiful secluded beaches and rural areas, from dry forests to hilly landscape. The west side of the island is rural, again highlighting Curaçao’s diversity.
The Dolphin Academy provides the opportunity to swim with dolphins, while Substation Curaçao offers the Curasub, a mini-submarine that takes guests beneath the sea, down to 1,000 feet.
Winds are brisk and dry, providing a greater comfort factor at high temperatures than is found in the more humid islands. Fortunately, hurricanes rarely affect this part of the Caribbean, as the island lies below the hurricane belt.
The Ostrich Farm raises not only ostriches, but also sheep. There is also an exquisite restaurant.
Highlights Curaçao is proud of its heritage and exposes its history through the many themed museums, such as the African and slavery museum, Kurá Hulanda, 32

terious with their natural formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The Christoffel National Park covers a 4,500-acre reserve topped by Mount Christoffel, the island’s highest peak, and offers a closer look at the skittering flora and fauna of the dry forest. At Boka Tabla, you can experience the spectacular explosion of rough ocean smashing against eroding rock—a beautiful sight. The plantation houses of Curaçao, known as “landhuizen”, are an architectural scrapbook of the 18th and 19th centuries. Some are open to the public as restaurants or inns and can be seen only from the road. Landhuis Chobolobo is famous as the site of the Curaçao Liqueur Distillery, where the renowned Blue Curaçao is bottled. Other plantation houses are Landhuis Savonet, Acension, Knip or Jan Kok, just to name a few, and are located on the west side on the island. Sun, Sea and Sand Curaçao’s beaches range from cozy coves to long strands of white sand, all of them washed by waves of clear, turquoise water on the sheltered southwest coast. But beware of the north coast, where undertows and surges are powerful. The island lists almost 70 dive sites, from walls to wrecks, reefs to rocks. Among the unique dives are the Valley, Lost Anchor, “Alice in Wonderland” and the depths surrounding an offshore desert island,
Klein Curaçao, with its pristine reefs and coral Mushroom Forest. All dives are in protected parks, where anchoring is not allowed. Waters are usually calm and always warmly pleasant. Curaçao Cuisine Local food is called “Kriyoyo” (‘Creole’) and boasts a blend of flavors and techniques best compared to Caribbean and Latin American cuisine. Popular dishes include: stobá, a stew made with various ingredients such as papaya, beef or goat; guiambo, soup made from okra and seafood; “kadushi”, cactus soup; “sopi mondongo”, intestine soup; “funchi”, cornmeal, and a lot of fish and other seafood. The ubiquitous snack is “pastechi”, a fried pastry with fillings of cheese, tuna, ham, or ground meat. Around the holiday season, special dishes are consumed, such as the “ayaka”, a cornmeal pastry wrapped in banana leaf, and “pekelé”, made out of salt cod. At weddings and other special occasions, a variety of sweets are served: “kokada”, a sweet, coconutbased; “ko’i lechi”, made of condensed milk and sugar; “tentalaria”, peanut sweets; and “bolo pretu” (‘black cake’), a tart drowned in liqueur. The Ultimate Experience Curacao has everything to offer and more, and therefore is difficult to classify as a typical destination. It has no roller coasters or huge attraction parks, but it has all the ingredients of an exotic getaway for the whole family. Curaçao is an ultimate experience.

FCCA Essay Contest Winner What are the Memories You Would Like a Cruise Passenger to Walk Away With After Visiting Your Destination? Every single time people visit a new place, their brain will remember a bunch of tiny details surrounding their vacation. After visiting many different countries, their brain scratches out old memories and replaces them with new ones. Sint Maarten is the exception- people’s brain will never replace the moments they have experienced on this stunning Island. The food’s they ate, the things they saw and the moments they experienced; no one will ever forget Sint Maarten. Sint Maarten is known for being a very international island with many different cultures and nationalities. Cruise ship passengers enjoy visiting a variety if islands, and Sint Maarten is one of them!
Fleur Hendrickx 12 years old, Caribbean International Academy, St. Maarten
By just cruising around a few parts of the island, tourist can already experience a variety of different cultures, living together as one. Sint Maarten has two sides, one being French, and one being Dutch.
Cruise passengers are usually very curious about this addition that makes this island so special. Basically visiting Sint Maarten is like making a round trip across the world, because you visit two countries! Next to the culture, Sint Maarten also offers a wide variety in food. Since there are lots of amazing cultures, there is also lots of amazing foods! For example, cruise passengers are interested in trying local foods when they visit a new island. Sint Maarten has so many different kinds of food, which makes it a great opportunity for tourist to try something new. For example, guest might like to try plantains because of their sweetness, and ‘ Caribbean vibe.’ Since the island offers a wide variety in culture, many restaurants are set up in a way so that lots of people can enjoy dining on Sint Maarten. Tourist can eat any kind of food, from any country, and still be in one place. Lastly, Sint Maarten is also famous for it’s local music, known as Calypso. Anywhere you go on Sint Maarten, you will hear some sort of tune with a Caribbean twist to it; in a restaurant, on the boardwalk, or simply on the radio. Right when Cruise passengers step of the boat, they are welcomed by the beautiful people, cultures, food and music of Sint Maarten, and they proudly agree that Sint Maarten really is ‘ The Friendly Island.’
I agree that remembering something from a vacation, even from a visit to Sint Maarten, is not always easy, but taking pictures of the beautiful beaches, the stunning mountain scenery and the turquoise oceans would help for sure. We want the visitors to remember Sint Maarten as an Island. Not just a vacation- destination. We want them to remember us as a life changing experience. This way, they’ll never forget the sounds of the waves slashing onto the shores, or the animal noises they heard all day long. They ‘ll never forget the kindness of all the people and the way they treated them from the moment they stepped on shore. They’ll never forget Sint Maarten. I Promise. JUNIOR DIVISION
Sint Maarten has a beautiful climate, and the beaches of our island always look like they’ve been stolen from a fancy travel magazine. Many cruise passengers take their time to relax on the beach while they visit Sint Maarten. Since our oceans are filled with many different kinds of tropical fish, snorkeling and scuba diving are also popular among the cruise ship passengers. However, the beaches are not the only thing that is fancy on our island. Hundreds of amazing beautiful spots are located all over the island. For example, many passengers are amazed by the mountain-scenery of Sint Maarten. A fantastic way to experience the true nature of Sint Maarten is to hike up the hills and see for oneself how gorgeous Sint Maarten really is. This is also a wonderful photo taking opportunity for guest, and a way that they can always remember their journey to the island. Lastly, the attractions of our island are quite popular among the cruise passengers. Hundreds of passengers book excursions every day to be able to experience just how fun Sint Maarten is. Lots of guest like to tour around the island by land or sea. Fort Louie, a historical landmark; Pic paradis, a picturesque destination and Baye Rouge, a one of a kind beach, are excellent examples. There are so many different ways to be entertained, that anyone who visits Sint Maarten will quickly realize that we really have it all!

FCCA Essay Contest Winner What are the Memories You Would Like a Cruise Passenger to Walk Away With After Visiting Your Destination? When a cruise passenger visits a destination, he not only takes away souvenirs but also the good and bad memories of his stay. Bad experiences and memories will kill a destination while happy experiences and memories will sell a destination. Therefore, it is critical that each cruise passenger leaves our island with a collection of happy Antiguan and Barbudan memories.
Terrikia Benjamin 14 years old, Antigua Girl’s High School, Antigua & Barbuda
I strongly believe that first impressions are lasting. Hence, an amazing arrival experience is a key memory that I would want a cruise passenger to take away. This would involve being first greeted by colourfully dressed tourism ambassadors at Heritage Quay who woo and pamper the visitors with a sweet and friendly Antiguan and Barbudan welcome. Another important aspect of the welcome experience would be to decorate strategic areas of the quay with colourful welcome messages. An additional important aspect of the arrival experience would be the sound of sweet melodious steel pan music and the presence of friendly vendors who are more anxious to greet the cruise passengers than to sell their craft products. Such an awesome arrival experience would forever register Antigua and Barbuda as a friendly cruise destination in the mind of every cruise passenger.
Another memory that I would want the cruise passenger to walk away with after visiting my destination is the once in a life time experience of driving along the Christian Valley Main Road. I would want the cruise passenger to reminisce and savour the experience of driving along this road, observing the lush thriving vegetation and being serenaded by a choir of island birds. I also want the cruise passengers to remember the experience of developing the sixth sense, which I call “the sense of nature” as he inhaled the pure air that was accented with the smell of Julie mangoes and soursops. Additionally, I wish for the visitor to take away memories of being so overwhelmed, dazzled and hypnotized by the natural beauty of Christian Valley that he and the other tourists felt that it was sinful to disturb the peaceful moment with the click of cameras. A memory that I think is a must for a cruise passenger to take away is a taste of the Antiguan and Barbudan cuisine. This ideal cuisine memory would be a lunch experience at OJ’s Beach Bar and Restaurant and sampling the ducuna and saltfish, conch fritters and a large serving of Barbudan lobster drizzled with Suzzie’s hot sauce and Cavalier Rum. Another aspect of this lunch experience that I would want the visitor to take away is sitting and sampling Antigua Black Pineapple while listening to local soca music.
People are the heartbeat of a destination. Hence, the most important memory that I would want a cruise passenger to walk away with from my destination is the memory of kind and friendly people with smiles that register one hundred percent of Antiguan love. I want the cruise passenger to remember the warm tour guides, the helpful taxi drivers and the experience of being pampered by the service of the Antiguan people. The ideal way to seal the package of fond memories for a cruise passenger to walk away with after visiting my destination is to give him a royal departure experience. This would involve ushering him back to the cruise ship with goodbye waves from the tourism ambassadors, smiles from the local people and the sound of King Obstinate’s calypso “I will always come back to you”.
A hand bag of souvenirs is nice for a cruise passenger to take away from a destination but it is best for him to take away a heart full of happy memories of our cuisine, landscape and people. A visit to at least one of our 365 beaches is the ultimate memory that I would want a cruise passenger to take away from my destination. I would like a cruise passenger to reminisce on his visit to Morris Beach and diving into the unpolluted aquamarine mirror-clear sea water and relaxing in the soft cushion movements of the waves. Part two of this beach experience would be for the visitor to relax on the dazzling diamond white silky sand while being massaged by the hot sunshine. Overall, I want the cruise passenger to take away the heavenly and breathtaking experience of relaxing on an unpolluted beach that is free of purse snatchers, nagging vendors and stray dogs.
