ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL Andrea S., Florida

El Yunque Rainforest, RĂo Grande Some of the most beautiful pictures in my life are in this rainforest. Waterfalls, lots of hiking and stunning views. Roads that are very narrow and hilly. There is a tower almost at the top to take pictures from. At every turn you'll find a different panoramic view. JUST GORGEOUS. El Yunque is much more than the only rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. It's a five star world class attraction. Live your own five star vacation story.

Message from the FCCA

Michele M. Paige

Kevin Sheehan

President, Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association

President & CEO, Norwegian Cruise Line / FCCA Chairman

On behalf of the FCCA’s 15 Member Lines, we welcome you to the 21st annual FCCA Conference & Trade Show. This event has a long-standing history of helping attendees develop relationships and understanding to improve their cruise tourism business. Many of us are lucky enough to have first-hand knowledge of the significance of having partners in business and life, relying on them for ideas, knowledge, support and contacts. But like any other precious resource, reliable and knowledgeable partners—ones that know the industry and are willing and able to assist us achieve our goals—are rare. They can be hard to find and even harder to access without the proper avenues. This is why the FCCA paves these inroads to lead the way to our core mission: to help our partners in destinations’ private and public sectors develop cooperative and mutually beneficial relationships with our member cruise line executives, as well as utilize our wealth of resources, information, experience and knowhow to improve the guest experience and maximize cruise tourism’s impact. You will witness this focus over the next few days here in spectacular St. Maarten. The FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show’s balance between business sessions, social functions and the trade show—coupled with the attendance of about 100 cruise executives and 1,000 public and private stakeholders—create the perfect forum for the exchange of information and industry trends, sharing of ideas and cultivation of valuable business relationships. Beyond providing all of that, the event epitomizes what the FCCA Platinum and Associate Membership offer, as this is just one of the many FCCA events that bring together our members and cruise line executives to help them benefit from each other and grow the industry together. It is also one of the many tools we use to foster this kind of communication and relationship building, in addition to meetings, projects, publications and much more. So prepare yourselves to renew worthwhile business relationships or forge new ones while learning about the latest happenings in the industry. Be ready to take advantage of the multiple opportunities available at this event to help advance your company, product and/or destination. And don’t forget to enjoy yourselves and this stunning country while sampling St. Maarten’s offerings and experiencing why and how it has increased its passenger arrivals over 50% since it hosted the Conference in 2003. 7

WORKSHOP 23

St. Maarten: The Port to Remember, the 21st Annual FCCA Conference & Trade Show to Remember Port St. Maarten officials were very pleased that the destination was selected to host the 21st annual Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association Conference & Trade Show after vying with several other top contenders to have this great opportunity. The advantages supporting the destination during the selection process was its ultra-modern airport facilities, hotel infrastructure, transportation system, and all the modern amenities that a visitor could ask for. St. Maarten’s relationship with the FCCA also played an important role. This relationship has withstood the test of time and is based on trust, understanding, cooperation, and an enduring, beneficial partnership, all of which have led to the positive development of St. Maarten’s cruise sector.

24

Hosting a conference and trade show of this magnitude means a direct economic impact for the country. It also, and most importantly, brings cruise executives and tourism stakeholders to the shores of the ‘Friendly Island.’ This gives the local business community a unique opportunity to access cruise industry decision makers and to solidify business relationships and long-term benefits. The dedicated team—comprised of port, government and private sector representatives—has worked diligently to put together a program of activities that showcases St. Maarten and delights all of the attendees. They have gone above and beyond to facilitate the much-anticipated high turnout and make the 2014 FCCA Conference & Trade Show a memorable one. At the end, it will be

the “conference to remember,” mimicking the branding quote used by Port St. Maarten, the “Port to Remember.”

holders to further offer new and exciting homegrown tours and experiences based on St. Maarten’s cultural heritage.

A grand St. Maarten welcome was planned to greet attendees at the Princess Juliana International Airport and prelude the numerous activities to showcase the destination’s enhanced guest experience and ‘WOW’ factor, which have been the focus of various FCCA workshops with cruise executives. In fact, Port St. Maarten established a clear strategy for this and developed a company, ‘St. Maarten Harbour Seashore Development,’ to promote and facilitate this very important factor of cruise passengers’ guest experience (shore excursions were the number one expenditure in the study St. Maarten participated in, Business Research & Economic Advisors’ [BREA] “Economic Contribution of Cruise Tourism to the Destination Economies”). Plus, the destination is working with local stake-

Lessons were also applied from the destination’s first time hosting the event. Indeed, this is the destination’s second time hosting the FCCA Conference, and much has changed since St. Maarten hosted it a decade ago. The destination is now known as a culinary and entertainment capital of the Caribbean—another source of enjoyment for Conference attendees. Considerable investment is being made to develop the Down Street Cruise Heritage Square. The project includes construction six cabanas to be used for a bar/restaurant; the selling of arts and crafts, as well as other tourist-related goods; toilet/bathroom facilities; lockers; taxi and vehicle parking; and a water fountain. The new square—strategically located next to the Walter Plantz Tender Jetty,

25

which connects the boardwalk/beach promenade, Down Street and Front Street—will also focus on entertainment, with a stage, speakers and ‘plug and play’ feature for local musicians, artists and bands. The project is expected to be completed in time for the 2014/2015 cruise season. The plans for the Down Street Cruise Heritage Development go back to 2008, when the Walter Plantz Tender Jetty materialized. The focus of the Down Street project is about culture and heritage. Each cabana will be named after one of the country’s beaches, and cultural and heritage organizations will have the opportunity to showcase their history and customs to visitors. Our Port, Port St. Maarten: A World-Leading Cruise Destination Those visiting St. Maarten for the first time will enjoy what the country has to offer. Here are some key developments that have transformed the port and country into a world-leading cruise destination. Over the past decade, the St. Maarten Harbour Group of Companies (SHGC) has invested more than US$100 million into infrastructure and equipment, and the focus for the future is on investing in personnel and processes to continue to improve efficiency. During the same timeframe, the Group has transformed into a more commercially-orientated operation, including a refinancing package 26

of US$150 million by the Central Bank of Curaçao and St. Maarten. Additionally, the Simpson Bay Causeway was a major investment recently completed, and smaller investments, such as the Caribbean’s first crew lounge, were also made. The port facilities and infrastructure developed during the past 50 years have much to do with the island’s cruise sector growth. In 1980, the destination only received 105,000 cruise passengers for the entire year. This grew to 564,251 in 1995 and to 1,055,040 in 2002, the year before hosting its first FCCA Conference. Passenger and ship calls then surged again, as evidenced as Port St. Maarten receiving 1,785,670 passengers and 631 vessels last year. This cruise sector success is vital to the country’s economy. During the 2011/2012 cruise year (May 2011 – April 2012), St. Maarten generated $356.2 million in passenger and crew expenditures—ranking second of the 21 destinations participating in the aforementioned BREA study—and 8,123 jobs with a wage income of US$160 million. The year 2014 is a special year for Port St. Maarten and the destination to continue building on its cruise sector accomplishments. Besides marking 50 years in the cruise industry, St. Maarten’s role in hosting the 21st annual Florida-Caribbean Conference & Trade Show will cement its status as a world-class cruise destination.

FCCA Essay Contest Winner WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT THE CRUISE SHIPS COME TO MY DESTINATION? The sun, sea and sand attract many tourists, especially from the cold regions, to enjoy a stay in the exotic, warm Caribbean. Tourism, which includes those amazing floating “cities” called cruise ship, are very beneficial to my country, Jamaica. Some of these benefits are: providing foreign exchange for the country, providing employment for Jamaicans both on the ships and on-land and facilitating cultural and educational exchanges between Jamaicans and our foreign visitors. It has even resulted in the development of a town!

Gabrielle Pratt 12 years old, St. Andrew Preparatory School Jamaica

Foreign exchange earning from passenger spending is thought of as the greatest benefit of cruise tourism to Jamaica. It is estimated that each cruise passenger spends approximately U.S. $ 75,000 to U.S $100.00 per day and with Jamaica welcoming over 1.3 million cruise ship passengers in 2012, we can see that this adds up to a significant amount. This money is needed by the country to pay for its imported items such as fuel and food.

The second benefit of cruise shipping is that it provided many jobs for Jamaicans. My countrymen are employed as chefs, waiters and waitresses, ship captains and engineers on the ships. The industry also creates jobs onshore, in transportation and duty-free shops and malls. It also creates opportunity for local artists, as tourist generally enjoy buying our unique paintings, sculptures and pottery to place in their homes, as a token of their trip or as gifts for family and friends. The arrival of cruise ships to a port can lead to the development of towns and cities. One only has looked at the town of Falmouth, in Jamaica, to see an example of this. Over the past few years, the town has seen the improvements of its roadways and an increase in the number of local businesses it being selected as a port of call by the major cruise line.

In conclusion, it is amazing that an industry that started almost 200 years ago is still important to my country. It is my hope that it will continue to be so far another 200 years. Another benefit of cruise shipping is that it allows many persons to be exposed to our colourful cultures. Tourists always enjoy sampling the way of life of Jamaicans. They enjoy hearing the Jamaican patois, listening to the soothing music of the world’s most famous reggae singer “Bob Marley” and eating our delicious foods such as our spicy jerk pork and our flavourful ackee and salt fish. They also get to see first-hand, the meaning of our motto “Out of Many One People!” It is not hard to imagine persons wanting to come and live, work, retire or invest in Jamaica based on what they learn of the country from their visit as a cruise ship passenger. In return, many ordinary Jamaicans who come in contact with the cruise passenger get an opportunity to learn about the life outside of Jamaica, hence it also provides an educational opportunity for them.

FCCA Essay Contest Winner WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT THE CRUISE SHIPS COME TO MY DESTINATION? Why are cruise ships important to my beautiful Virgin Islands? My country and the cruise ship passengers benefit when cruise ships visit. The government collects a tax from the cruise ships for every cruise ship passenger who comes to the Virgin Islands. The cruise ship passengers do not only contribute money through paying tax, they also spend money when they step on land at the many different places. This adds significant amount of income to the Virgin Islands every year. The tourists from the cruise ships build one of the main pillars of the Virgin Islands’ economy, Tourism. The cruise ships coming to my country increase employment opportunities for the people who live on the island. Jobs are Leigha Burke created when tourists pay for taxis, buy items, rent cars, scooters and bikes. 14 years old, Elmore Stoutt High School Taxi drivers, boat captains, souvenir shops, car rental agencies, bike and British Virgin Islands scooter rentals all benefit when cruise passengers spend their money on land. Some tourists take tours on land or on sea. Cars, scooters and bikes are used by the cruise passengers to explore the islands themselves. The cruise ship passengers shop at the many different stores. They buy clothes, souvenirs, local food, items, drinks and more. The cruise ship passengers also benefit from the cruise visits. They get to see many things that they have not been able to see before and learn new information. They experience different cultures when they travel to the various ports; however, the Virgin Islands has a unique mixture of cultures. When cruise ships visit the Virgin Islands, the passengers do not just visit one island, they automatically get to visit many islands at once. Cruise passengers can experience the music and well-known friendliness of Virgin Islanders, while sampling tasty dishes from the Caribbean, Asia or even America.

The Sage Mountain National Park on Tortola. With the many activities and sites to see, cruise passengers would surely return and bring their families for an overnight stay. Cruise ships are important to my destination. They impact the Virgin Islands economically and we impact their lives. While they spend money we offer them activities, sites and ocean views that they will never forget. I look back and wonder, who could disagree when I say that the Virgin Islands needs cruise ships and cruise ships need the Virgin Islands? They interact with the different sites around the Virgin Islands. They get to learn about my country’s culture and its history. They could take a swim at Cane Garden Bay or The Baths or just sun bathe on the warm, white sand. Cruise passengers who live in cold countries always enjoy the warm sunshine and the flow of breeze from the trade winds. The cruise ship passengers take tours on land and on sea. They can choose to visit the different islands of the Virgin Islands like Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke or remain on Tortola. They are able to experience the wonderful attractions on the islands like The Copper Mine on Virgin Gorda, the Bubbly Pool and White Bay on Jost Van Dyke and
