He became reservations manager in 1974, and took over the post of vice president of passenger traffic in 1976, succeeding to the presidency of Carnival in 1979. In 1990, he was appointed chairman by the company’s board of directors. In 2013, the role of Carnival Corporation & plc chairman and CEO was split with Arison continuing to serve as chairman and longtime Carnival board member Arnold Donald being named CEO. Carnival went public in 1987, raising $400 million for future expansion. The company continued its growth through the traditional avenue of new ship construction and also began to diversify expanding the company’s cruise operations by entering new market segments of the industry. In 1989, Arison engineered the acquisition of the venerable Holland America Line, giving Carnival entrée to the premium segment of the cruise industry. The purchase also included Westours (now Holland America Princess Alaska Tours), a leading Alaska tour operator. Today, Carnival Corporation also owns ultra-luxury Cunard, operator of the legendary Queen Mary 2, along with Seabourn, and Genoa, Italy-based Costa Cruises, Europe’s leading cruise operator. In April 2003, Arison spearheaded the dual listed company transaction combining Carnival Corporation’s various cruise operators with the wide-ranging brands of P&O Princess Cruises, creating a truly global cruise operator with the leading cruise brands in North America and Europe. The P&O Princess Cruises transaction included Princess Cruises, P&O Cruises, AIDA Cruises, and P&O Cruises Australia. Following the transaction, the company was renamed Carnival Corporation & plc and is traded on both the New York and London Stock Exchanges. It is the only company in the world to be included in both the S&P 500 and the FTSE 100 indices. In 2016, Carnival Corporation & plc launched its 10th brand, social impact travel operator Fathom, sailing to the Dominican Republic and Cuba – the first cruises from the U.S. to the island in more than 40 years. Arison’s keen attention to marketing and growth priorities has resulted in revenues increasing from approximately $600 million in 1988 to $15.7 billion in 2015. Arison is the chairman of the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA), a trade organization whose mandate is to provide a forum for discussion on legislation, tourism development, ports, safety, security and other cruise industry issues. Arison’s contributions to the cruise industry have been recognized by a wide range of international organizations. He has been named an “Officer of the French Legion of Honor” – the country’s highest civilian honor – by French President Jacques Chirac, received an honorary doctorate in naval architecture from the University of Genoa, and was awarded the Decoration of Commander, First Class, of the Order of the Lion of Finland by the President of the Republic of Finland. He has also been awarded the insignia of “Onorificenza al Merito della Repubblica Italiana” by the president of Italy, which confers that country’s highest title on a civilian. In 2010, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Cruise Lines International Association, the world’s largest cruise industry trade association. Arison is also the managing general partner of the National Basketball Association’s Miami Heat franchise and has served as chairman of the league’s board of governors. Puerto Rico to Showcase Improvements at the FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show Puerto Rico last hosted the FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show in October 2011, and this year’s event will help the island showcase its achievements over the past half-decade: the expansion of its tourism infrastructure and efforts to diversify its attractions in order to remain competitive within the Caribbean—the world’s most important region for the cruise industry.

Infrastructure is key to retain and affirm Puerto Rico’s unique position as a leading Caribbean homeport (33% of traffic) and transit port (67% of traffic). Ongoing and future public-private investment in the cruise piers, the Convention Center District and the San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport will help continue the industry’s unprecedented growth in Puerto Rico. Specifically, initiatives include:

During the past five years, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company and its partners have heavily invested in initiatives to boost passenger satisfaction with product development and service as the two key pillars. Recent passenger reviews and scores from various cruise lines are quite encouraging and reflect significant increases over previous years.

94

CRUISE INDUSTRY PROFILES

Updating and remodeling Piers 4 and PanAm in San Juan in order to increase the port’s capacity and allow larger capacity cruises to berth for both transit and homeport visits. The Puerto Rico Ports Authority is currently conducting feasibility studies in order to assess the infrastructure needs to meet the growing

demand. Accommodating larger ships is one of the region’s challenges and Puerto Rico is moving swiftly to boost capacity and ensure world-class facilities are available for the cruise passenger. •

The construction of the District Live! at the Convention Center District, which will add 76,000 square feet of vibrant entertainment options to the area. It will feature a theatre with capacity for 8,000, 18 shops and food concessions, and a multiplex cinema. Construction is slated to start summer 2016 and expected to be completed by late 2017, with a $55 million investment. Currently, the District, which is quite convenient to the homeport piers, has three hotels: the Sheraton Puerto Rico (503 rooms), the Hyatt Place (149 rooms) and the Hyatt House (126 rooms), with further hotel developments planned.

A $205 million infrastructure investment at the San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport is already helping improve the passenger experience at the Caribbean’s busiest air terminal. Improvements will be finalized by summer 2016. Passenger traffic at the airport is expected to reach 9.3 million during 2016, an 18% increase from 2011. Today, San Juan is served from more cities in the United States than any other location in the Caribbean and is the main US-Caribbean hub. New air service during this year includes National Airlines serving San Juan from Islip (Long Island) and Air Canada adding nonstop service from Montreal, as well as Iberia reopening its Madrid-San Juan route. Recent additions such as Norwegian Airlines’ winter service from Copenhagen, London, Oslo and Stockholm have significantly boosted European tourism to Puerto Rico. Norwegian will increase capacity on their London flights for the Winter Season 2016-2017. CRUISE INDUSTRY PROFILES

Hotel infrastructure is another recent success story for Puerto Rico. In order to expand accommodation choices for “pre-and-post packages,” there are several facilities currently in construction, such as:

The recent inauguration of the El Monstruo zipline at the Toro Verde Adventure Park in Orocovis. Certified as the longest zipline in the world by Guinness World Records in February, this ride is a must for adventure seekers.

The “Rebirth of Isla Verde Beach” development project. Isla Verde is one of the major tourism areas in the metropolitan region, located near the International Airport. This project aims to revitalize the area by renovating and repurposing several areas, including the development of two additional entertainment-oriented zones and an array of new gastronomic offerings.

The development of a new Courtyard by Marriott hotel at the Convention Center District, further boosting hotel capacity for pre and post guests.

The new Vivo Beach Club—a unique private club located in six acres of beachfront property in the Isla Verde district will help expand the shore excursion product in San Juan. This luxury property was opened in February 2016 and offers access to Isla Verde’s Blue Flag Beach. Plus, it will feature 3 full service restaurants, an onsite microbrewery, and an open-air stage that will host local and international acts. The club is just 20 minutes away from the piers and certain to become a favorite of cruise passengers visiting the Island.

The acquisition, remodeling and re-launching of the former Ambassador Plaza Hotel in the Condado District.

Complete financing and construction of three new luxury hotels.

In order to accommodate the growing number of visitors to San Juan, new products and attractions are being devised. Some of these include:

The opening of an information/interactive site, Casita Rums at the Plaza Dársena in Old San Juan, will allow passengers to experience Puerto Rico’s renowned world-class rums. It will offer a unique combination of rum tasting and history tour, conveniently located right beside the transit piers.

96

CRUISE INDUSTRY PROFILES

Investment in infrastructure and new attractions is complemented with service initiatives. During 2015, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company enlisted the Aquila Center for Cruise Excellence to train and certify the island’s largest tour operators. Two tour operators, Rico Sun Tours (RST) and United Tour Guides (UTG), received the ACE Tour Operator Designation, bestowed after an extensive quality-assurance process and ensuring commitment to excellence on tour delivery, service and operations. Dozens of local guides have also been trained by Aquila and received the prestigious Aquila Tour Guide Excellence International Certification. Puerto Rico was the first destination to engage in fully certifying both tour operators and guides, a move that has been wellreceived by industry executives.

4 Ports, 7 Berths, Unlimited Shore Side Fun The U.S. Virgin Islands is America’s Caribbean destination with unique experiences on each island. With a combined four ports on St. Croix and St. Thomas and seven total berths, the Territory has plenty to offer cruise passengers. Once travelers disembark, they are greeted with a variety of shopping, beaches, attractions and diverse culinary offerings. Each island tells its own story. Get Hooked on St. Croix Passengers will arrive in one of St. Croix’s two “twin cities” — at the Ann E. Abramson Marine Facility in Frederiksted or at the Gallows Bay Dock near Christiansted. From the colonial architecture 98

and Danish street names to the island’s cuisine and cultural traditions, visitors can discover lasting remnants from the two centuries of Danish rule in both towns. Frederiksted and Christiansted offer unique experiences for visitors, and there is plenty of fun to be had in between. Shoppers will love Christiansted’s colorful streets full of locally-owned shops. One of the perfect St. Croix mementos is the custom-designed Crucian Hook Bracelet found at Sonya LTD. The 45-year-old island tradition symbolizes the wearer’s search or success in finding true love, dependent on the direction the hook faces. Exquisite, hand-made jewelry can also be found at ib designs and other shops nestled in St. Croix’s north shore town.

History buffs flock the main cruise port town of Frederiksted in search of clues from the “Big Island’s” seven-nation influenced past. One of the first sights cruise passengers see when they dock is the massive red Fort Frederik, located west of the pier. A short drive away is the St. Croix Landmarks Society’s Estate Whim Museum, a restored 18th-century sugar plantation. The museum offers guests a glimpse into the impact of Denmark’s colonial reign through tours of the great house and surrounding sugar factory ruins. Adventurers will find plenty to keep them busy on St. Croix. Hop on a sailboat to nearby Buck Island and snorkel its world-renowned underwater trail, one of the few Underwater National Monuments in the National Park System. Hike through the west end’s vast rainforest or down to ancient tide pools on the north shore. Kayak within the Salt

River Bay National Historical Park where Christopher Columbus first landed in 1493. Strap on your tank and scuba dive five unique types of sites in one destination — pier, reef, shipwreck, shore and wall. Visitors can even jump into an ATV and cruise St. Croix’s rolling hills. With new restaurant openings and culinary attractions in 2015, experiences abound for foodies visiting St. Croix. Sample Danish cuisine at 40 Strand Eatery or farm-to-table meals at Zion Modern Kitchen. Enjoy truly authentic Crucian bites like kallaloo and conch in butter sauce at food trucks or local establishments like La Reine Chicken Shack or Harvey’s Restaurant. For visitors that want to see where it all comes from, stop by certified organic Ridge-to-Reef Farm or Art Farm for a handson farm tour. The island’s green hills create quite the backdrop for the farm lands. Also, don’t miss CRUISE INDUSTRY PROFILES

unique experiences at two different rum distilleries on one island — the family-run Cruzan Rum Distillery and Diageo’s Captain Morgan Visitor Center. Get Lost on St. Thomas With all that is available for cruise passengers, it’s easy to get lost on St. Thomas. Whether the port of call is the West Indian Company Dock or Crown Bay Marina, passengers arrive on St. Thomas right in the thick of the action. Similar to St. Croix, the island’s Danish influence is immediately evident in the architecture scattered across the picturesque hills and waterfront. In between the historic buildings, visitors will find plenty of modern fun with attractions, tours and unlimited culinary options. With a $1,600 duty free shopping allowance — double that of other Caribbean islands — and streets lined with shops, shopaholics will fall in love with St. Thomas. While downtown Charlotte Amalie, a short drive from the West Indian Company Dock and Crown Bay Marina, is the main hub for shopping, there are also a variety of shops in Havensight, Red Hook and Yacht Haven Grande. The high duty free allowance gives visitors the chance to take advantage of top-of-the-line jewelry, electronics, fragrances, alcohol and souvenirs across the island. St. Thomas offers a variety of options that suit each visitor’s own beach personality. Visitors flock to Magens Bay and Morningstar Beach for their amenities, watersports rentals, food, beverages 100

and unparalleled beauty. But cruise passengers seeking more peace and quiet will love spots like Lindbergh Beach, which offers one of the best shore dives in the USVI, and Smith Bay Park, which offers an amazing view of the many islands that lie off the east end of the island. Those who want to immerse themselves with the locals should pay a visit to Vessup Bay or Brewers Bay. When it comes to dining, there’s something for everyone on St. Thomas. Those who want to devour authentic local cuisine will love places like Gladys’ Café, Cuzzins Restaurant or Petite Pump Room, where treats like conch fritters and sweet potato mash are never-ending. High-end seaside dining can be found at Grande Cruin Yacht Haven Grande, Oceana in Frenchtown or Sunset Grille at Secret Harbour Beach Resort. Visitors craving fresh Caribbean seafood should head to Hook, Line and Sinker or Caribbean Fish Market. Visitors seeking an active stay on St. Thomas will find a lot of available options. Tree Limin’ Extreme offers the only zip line tour in the USVI, with beautiful views of endless green hills and outlying islands. Virgin Islands Ecotours offers kayaking, hiking and snorkeling tours of hidden mangroves and historic Hassel Island.
