President, Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association
President & COO, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Chairman, FCCA
On behalf of the FCCA and our Member Lines, we welcome you to the 24th annual FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show here in the marvelous Mérida, Mexico. This event has a long-standing history of helping attendees develop relationships and understanding to improve their cruise tourism business. Some of us are lucky enough to know the significance of partners in business and life, relying on them for ideas, input, support and contacts. However, like any other precious resource, reliable and knowledgeable partners are rare. They can be hard to find and even harder to access without the proper avenues. This is why the FCCA paves these inroads to lead the way to our core mission: to help our partners in destinations’ private and public sectors develop cooperative and mutually beneficial relationships with Member Line executives, as well as utilize our wealth of resources, information and experience to maximize cruise tourism’s benefits. You will witness this focus over the next few days of business sessions, networking events and opportunities to exhibit and promote your product to 100 high-level cruise executives, along with the nearly 1,000 tourism stakeholders, while exchanging information and industry trends, sharing ideas, cultivating invaluable business relationships, and having some fun in the process while experiencing this destination’s fantastic offerings. Beyond providing all that, this event epitomizes what the FCCA membership offers, as this is just one of the many FCCA events that gather our members and Member Line executives to benefit from each other and grow the industry together. It is also one of the many tools we use to build communication, relationships and business, in addition to private meetings and site visits, tailored strategic approaches, marketing opportunities and much more. So prepare yourself to renew worthwhile business relationships or forge new ones while learning about the industry’s latest happenings and products. Get ready to take advantage of the multiple opportunities to help advance your company, product and/or destination. And don’t forget to enjoy yourself and explore this stunning destination.

Mérida, Mexico Welcomes FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show Attendees and the Investment to Its Cruise Tourism Future Mérida, Mexico Welcomes FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show Attendees and the Investment to Its Cruise Tourism Future. While reading this, you might already be experiencing some of what Mérida, Mexico has to offer. Perhaps you just learned that it is the capital and largest city in the state of Yucatán and home to the Progreso Cruise Ship Terminal, or you just saw carved Maya stones used in the downtown buildings or walked through one of the largest centro histórico districts in the Americas. That’s because Mérida and the state of Yucatán decided to invest in its cruise tourism future by hosting the FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade 26
Show. For more than 20 years, destinations have increased their cruise tourism impact by hosting the annual FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show. From triple-digit growth in passenger and vessel arrivals to the development of new piers and cruise destinations, event hosts have directly benefited from spotlighting their products, experiences and infrastructure to 1,000 stakeholders and the industry’s most influential decision makers—over 100 executives, presidents and CEOs from FCCA’s 18 Member Lines. “I believe one of the cruise industry’s greatest assets is our economic contribution for the destinations we call,” said Micky Arison, chairman of Carnival Corporation & plc and past-
chairman of the FCCA. “The main focus of the FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show is to help all involved improve their share of that economic impact, and I look forward to seeing the positive results from Mérida displaying its products and ability to organize an event of this magnitude.” Mérida knows the significance of hosting the FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show because of watching the results in Cozumel, which hosted the event twice. After first hosting it in 2007, Cozumel experienced a more than 21 percent jump in passenger arrivals between 2006 and 2008. And riding the wave after recently hosting it in 2015, Cozumel looks poised to welcome a world’s-leading 3.82 million FCCA Member Line passengers in 2018, catapulting from 2.65 million in 2013—a 44 percent increase, and 88 percent more than 2006.
As Mérida recognizes, these numbers extend far beyond the cruise pier; they directly benefit the economy, to the tune of $23.9 million, in addition to 609 jobs paying $3.6 million in wages, directly generated by cruise tourism in Progreso, per the the Business Research & Economic Advisors (BREA) 2015 study, Economic Contribution of Cruise Tourism to the Destination Economies. These numbers represent direct benefits for local citizens, with $16.8 million in passenger spending and $1.8 million in crew spending going towards the purchases of goods and services, including food and beverage at restaurants and bars, shore excursions, ground transportation and retail purchases. And the $5.4 million in cruise line expenditures went to taxes and fees, port costs and purchases of local products and services. Plus, cruise tourism brings indirect 27
contributions like supplies purchased by tour operators, restaurants and port authorities, as well as spending from cruise passengers who return as stay-over guests. By these numbers, a 20 percent passenger volume increase means a large economic boost for Mérida and the state of Yucatán. Progreso expects more than 400,000 FCCA Member Line passengers this year through 132 calls, so besides bringing an additional 80,000 passengers and 26 calls, that 20 percent surge would provide approximately an extra $6.62 million to the economy through an additional $4.63 million in passenger spending, $493,000 in crew spending and $1.49 million in cruise line spending.
28
Plus, the destination would see commensurate increases in its employment wages and indirect contributions. Even a single call from a mid-sized ship (130,000 GRT with 3,000 passengers and 1,250 crew) would carry a large economic wake, roughly $285,080—$173,640 in passenger spending, $55,440 in crew spending and roughly $56,000 in cruise line expenditures. Considering the potential economic impact, it becomes easy to understand why Mérida and the state of Yucatan decided to invest in its economy and cruise tourism by hosting the FCCA Conference & Trade Show.

FCCA Essay Contest Winner WHAT WILL CRUISE SHIP PASSENGERS LEARN ABOUT MY COUNTRY? WHAT WILL THEY REMEMBER MOST AND HOLD WITH THEM? As the cruise ship passengers stand on the ship’s deck watching the idyllic island Barbados disappear into the mist, many memories of this tropical paradise float across their minds. Forever etched in their minds, would be the tour of Harrison’s Cave. They were amazed at the rock formations created over thousands of years by water dripping from the roof of the cave. The pools of crystal clear water which settle beneath the majestic waterfalls also leave visitors to the cave spell-bound. The calming sounds of the streams of water flowing by, making the visitors never want to leave beautiful Barbados. Jaden Dowridge 10 years old, West Terrace Primary St. James, Barbados
How could they ever forget the trip to Gun Hill Signal Station? They learned that the signal stations were used by the soldiers to send messages across the island using flags. The vantage point that this station offered, allowed them a picturesque 360 degrees view of Barbados.
Some of the passengers walking through the Welchman Hall Gully were amazed at the many Bajan (Barbadian) Green Monkeys leaping through the tree branches with their tails swinging. Most of the trees seen in the gully cannot be found anywhere else on the island. The passengers who had lunch on the island loved the Bajan food very much. They truly wanted to take some home so that they would always have a taste of Barbados. They also wanted recipes for fishcakes, pudding and souse as well as cou-cou and flying fish so that they could continue to tantalize their taste buds long after their trip had ended.
From the beach, many of the passengers travelled to the capital of the island, Bridgetown. For some of them, a tour around Bridgetown would be quite a learning experience. The history of Bridgetown is intriguing. They learned that Barbados’ parliament is the third oldest in the Commonwealth. During the tour, they visited the statue of Errol Walton Barrow where they learned that he was Barbados’ first Prime Minister. He was also a pilot who fought in World War II. Touring Bridgetown, exploring the caves and gullies, sampling the delicious food and meeting the locals, all of these unforgettable experiences are branded in their memories as they sail off into the night.

Most of the passengers would have gone to the beach. For some of them it might be the first time at the seaside. Relaxing on the beach helped them to understand the Barbadian flag. The yellow in the Barbados flag representing the sun and sand that they really appreciated as the sun’s rays warmed their bodies and minds. The blue representing the sky and seas was not lost to them as the aquamarine waters bathed and cooled them. As they relaxed on the white sandy beaches, they made friends with the locals and enjoyed playing games like draughts and warri with them. The cruise ship passengers were also pleased with the wide variety of fresh fish roasted and served to them right there on the beach.

FCCA Essay Contest Winner WHAT WILL CRUISE SHIP PASSENGERS LEARN ABOUT MY COUNTRY? WHAT WILL THEY REMEMBER MOST AND HOLD WITH THEM? Lush rolling hills, tranquil valleys and amicable people are a few of the most memorable things that one will remember about the beautiful island of St. Lucia. This is why a British historian named St. Lucia 'Helen of the West' comparing the island to the great beauty of Helen of Troy. So what will cruise ship passengers remember most about St. Lucia? Its beautiful natural landscape and features strike a chord with many who visits its shores. Also, the people are a very fascinating bunch and two of them have been able to stand out the most; Sir William Arthur Lewis and Sir Derek Alton Walcott who both won Nobel Prizes. In addition, our cultural festival and traditions leave unforgettable memories with the people who venture into the cities and towns. Firstly, St. Lucia boasts a host of exciting natural features that will tempt the visitor to stay longer than planned. A passenger on a cruise who stops in St. Lucia will undoubtedly be amazed at the Sulphur Springs where one can bathe in natural bubbling pools of sulphur which rejuvenates the skin and walk into the world's only drive in volcano. Who would not want to enter a volcano? Well in St. Lucia you can do just that! Not far away is a ,bea utiful cascading waterfall called Diamond Falls whose colorful display of naturally occurring minerals will leave an individual speechless for such beauty has never been seen elsewhere. Taking a drive into Soufriere and Choiseul will surely not disappoint cruise visitors for on arrival in these two magnificent examples of modem Caribbean towns, one will be welcomed by the sight of the majestic towering twin peaks called Gros Piton and Petit Piton, St. Lucia's most memorable feature.
Alex Junior Gustave 13 years old, Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary Castires, Saint Lucia
Can any other country compare its culture to that of St. Lucia? St. Lucia is home to a melting pot of races and therefore a mixed heritage that will entice anyone. The rich French Creole spoken by its people in their special dialect is music to ones ears. The newly renamed Soleil St. Lucia Summer Festival boasts showcases a mix of talent and culture that will tantalize the eyes, ears and all other senses so much that the passenger will think twice about going back to the cruise ship. The Christmas traditions of black cake, sorrel and ham will seduce the taste buds and not forgetting the Festival of Lights. That beautiful display is all anyone needs to see to be reminded of St. Lucia's dazzling beauty. To conclude, St. Lucia has been lauded and given international recognition for its natural beauty, agreeable people and multicultural heritage. Cruise ship passengers who visit St. Lucia's shores will be awestruck by its magnificence and opulence. From the stunning natural beauty to flora and fauna which graces its hills and valleys, St. Lucia is definitely the one stop that every cruise ship passenger should look forward to for it will be the most memorable time of their life. Senior Division Finalists: 2nd Place – Renee Sandy, Grenada 3rd Place – Jermasha Mellow, Dominica
SENIOR DIVISION
Having established that St. Lucia's natural landscape is to die for, it is important to note that St. Lucia's people are some of the most friendly, warmest and most amicable people you will ever meet. Not forgetting to mention that they are also very intelligent and contribute significantly to world socio-economic advancement. Why do I say so? Any cruise ship passenger who disembarks in St. Lucia cannot fail to learn something about Sir William Arthur Lewis and Sir Derek Alton Walcott. These two great men put St. Lucia on the map by making it the country with the highest number of Nobel Laureates per capita in the entire world. Now that is something anyone would remember about and island! Sir Arthur made his mark by earning the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1979 and Sir Derek earned the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992 whose inspiration was St. Lucia's opulent vegetation, blinding white beaches and tangled multicultural heritage.
